Swordtember 22: Nordic
"Through hail and high wind, my living I make, across the seas and over the hills until the day I die. Iron on my hip with a boat full of goods, perfection beyond the horizon, and gods smiling down in the sky."

Rare 1,000-Year-Old ‘Viking Sword’ Found in Poland
Thought to be older than Poland itself, archaeologists have hailed the discovery of an ancient sword at the bottom of the Wisła as being “a national sensation”.
The discovery was made last week during dredging works conducted on the river running through the central city of Włocławek where, during routine silt removal, workers noticed an oblong, metal object amid the extracted sediment.
Tumblr media
Ośrodek Sportu i Rekreacji Włocławek were the first to break the news, writing on their social media: “During works on the marina an item was excavated that has a great chance of gaining unique status.
“After quickly consulting with Mr Olaf Popkiewicz from the History Seekers society, it was tentatively dated to around the 9th century.”
Soon after, the Provincial Office for the Protection of Monuments took the weapon to Toruń, handing it over to researchers from the Nicolaus Copernicus University.
Inscribed with the words Ulfberht, just eight other such swords are known to exist in Poland, and only 170 in the rest of Europe.
Tumblr media
Sambor Gawiński of the Kuyavian-Pomeranian branch of the conservator’s office underlined the importance of the discovery, saying: “This is an extremely valuable find. We know that these so-called Ulfberht swords were produced somewhere in Central Europe, but it’s not known exactly where.
Continuing, he added: “They were manufactured using very specific methods using carbon steel and a very precise composition.
“The amount of carbon steel that was used was strictly defined, making the sword very strong and flexible – its durability and combat value depended on this.”
The inscription was found following an X-ray of the object, with Gawiński saying that this dates the sword to before 950 AD.
“More importantly, after lying in silt for over 1,000 years, the sword has been preserved in excellent condition,” he said.
Valued at over PLN 100,000, the sword's fine condition is likely to aid historians looking to find out more.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As it stands, much mystery surrounds the sword, in particular how it ended up in Włocławek.
With other 40 such implements found in Norway, some have speculated that it belonged to a Viking.
Others, meanwhile, have suggested that it may simply have been acquired by a local as part of a merchant transaction.
Experts, though, have warned against jumping to conclusions. “Several theories have been posted and so far all variants are acceptable, but we need to wait for the results of more detailed research,” says Gawiński.

Dredged from the depths of the Vistula River, workers in Włocławek, Poland, have stumbled upon a medieval treasure - a 1,000-year-old sword with an Ulfberht signature.
Some experts have mentioned the ‘V’ word, but are they right?

Upon careful observation, one will see that the the pommels of these Viking Age sword are crooked; more noticeably on the center sword. This was a deliberate feature incorporated by the craftsman to allow for optimal grip ergonomics and biomechanics. Linked is a video by Roland Warzeca on grip ergonomics @ 7:35.

Artwork from new series title CBT 63 'Viking Warrior vs Frankish Warrior: Francia 799-911', illustrated by Johnny Shumate. This well-born Viking is eager to gain plunder and social standing in the raids on Francia. His wealthy background provides him with the perfect opportunity to seek a career as a warrior. He has undergone extensive military training and is able to pay the high cost of his weapons and armour. This warrior is likely to feel safe in the isolated forest and marshland of Louvain, protecting him from Frankish cavalry manoeuvres. Having constructed a surrounding ditch and motivated by the recent forays into the surrounding area, there is no reason why this Viking did not assume there would be an easy victory, should a Frankish force engage his camp. (1) ) A Frankish blade bearing the trademark inscription ‘Ulfberht’. The 9th century saw the development of inlaid inscriptions on sword blades; the oldest known Ulfberht blade dates from about 800, although such blades continued to be crafted over the following three centuries. (2) In addition to his sword, this warrior carries a type of knife called a seax, which doubled as a tool and was ideal for the closest of combat encounters. (3) The quantity of metal and labour involved in crafting mail made it a luxury item, probably more expensive than a sword.

Odd OC ASKS!
🍰: What's something your OC counts as unforgivable? 🎂: Has your OC have any contradictory interests or traits to the first preception people have of the? How do they surprise people? 🍪: What is something that's sentimental to you OC? 🥃: If your OC was in this universe, what would be their favourite show/book/band/social media platform? 🍟: What does your OC admit to be their guilty pleasure? What actually is their guilty pleasure?
Thank you @hellogreyeyedathena for the ask!
🍰: It's hard to be unforgivable in Sigurd's eyes. You'd have to do something like try to hurt or kill someone close to him (or his pets). But if you ask him, if you so much as cross a line like join up with millennium and then not regret it when they come back to him then he'll just do something like this when he has you down (it gets brutal and this vid shows how he handles immense betrayal from someone who tries to actively gaslight him and manipulate him into sabotaging himself):
youtube
🎂: People would be surprised that Sigurd is pretty gentle, despite his stature and hardened physique. He isn't that scary once you look past his scars and piercing, fiery, soul-devouring eyes... unless you cross him, that is. You'd be surprised how lovely his smile is or how inviting his eyes can seem.
🍪: ahhh yes. Sentimental stuff. Sigurd has a few. One being his weapons. One of his weapons is a specially made sword that Sigurd forged himself for his brother. After burying his personal sword made by his brother Joshua with said brother, he took the sword he made for his brother instead, as is customary in Welsh pagan burial rites (for this AU at least since there is no written record of Brythonic pagan practices). The brother of a warrior must take his brother's weapon in exchange for a weapon of the brother to be given to the slain warrior to join the war god Arturius on a wild hunt whenever he crosses over from the Welsh pagan realm of the afterlife known as "Annwn". Arturius brings a wild hunt to make sure that sworn oaths to blood kin and friends are kept and that his followers are protected from evil. Their holy symbol is that of a sword or a sword held by the Lady of The Lake. This sentimental sword exchanged for Sigurd is an Ulfberht Sword. Forged from pure Titanium Damascus steel, its blade can hardly be dulled, nor bent, though it is light and flexible. Its bite can chew through high-carbon steel like a wolf's maw chewing up gristle and bones. Its tri-lobed pommel allows the user to hold in in a way that if taken up in two hands, can be used in a powerful blow, though it is only one-handed. Another sentimental item is that he has a special locket with a picture of his first girlfriend from England that he's lost contact with. 🥃: He would definitely love Castlevania or some classic games/music/and for a show he'd like something like Stranger Things to be transported into the modern day in this universe and it really just hits him the right way.
🍟: Oh wow where do I begin? Sigurd loves to dress provocatively sometimes. Mostly in casual, appropriate settings but he'd probably wear something like a very revealing fishnet shirt with some tight spandex with two belts, that's right, not one, but TWO belts. That's just ONE example. Another guilty pleasure is that he'll enjoy a nice romp through the woods like any other creature would so he'd feel wild and free instead of caged and "tamed".

Portfolio: Sketches and Designs
6-8. Inspired by Michelangelo's sketches, Gustave Doré's illustrations (see 10. below) and the writings of H .P. Lovecraft and Steven King, I used a variety of different nib-sized fine liners, line makers (i.e. liquid pencil lead) and white posca pens.
9. Inspired by heavy metal posters and album covers I combined "pagan" images, Norse runes and an early medieval Ulfberht sword.
