Amanita Muscaria | Verdigris Agaric | Cortinarius Iodes

Other wise known as “Pintrest Mushroom”, “White’s Tree Frog”, and “Now Entering Warp-speed”. (To me, at least.) The fuzzy mushrooms like Inky Cap from set 1 and Verdigris Agaric may have been the most fun ones to draw; I just like spending lots of time on little textures. This is the last set of mushrooms since I didn’t finished the whole challenge. Week 4 has some really cool mushrooms in it, so I might tackle it another time.

FOTD #014 : verdigris agaric! (stropharia aeruginosa)

the verdigris agaric is a woodland mushroom in the family strophariaceae. this mushroom is common in the grassy areas of europe, asia (iran), & parts of north america !! it particularly favours wood-chip mulches in gardens, & parks.

the big question : can i bite it?? the edibility of this mushroom is debated, with some sources saying they are edible, & some calling them poisonous. for safety, do not consume them !!

s. aeruginosa description :

"the cap is convex, broadening, & becoming umbonate with age. it is from 2–8 cm in diameter. at first it is a vivid blue/green, & very glutinous (slimy), with a sprinkling of white veil remnants around the edge. the colour in the gluten fades, or is washed off as it matures, and it becomes yellow ocher, sometimes in patches, but mostly at the centre. finally, it will lose the blue-green coloration completely. the white stem is quite long & of uniform thickness. it has a fragile brown/black ring, & below this the stem is covered in fine white scales, or flakes. the gills are initially white, then clay-brown, & sometimes have a white edge. the spore print is brownish-purple, & the oval spores 7–10 x 5 μm."

Stropharia aeruginosa

Commonly known as the blue-green stropharia or verdigris agaric.

Another very pretty blue mushroom!

Stropharia aeruginosa can be found growing on rotting wood in  Europe, Iran and parts of North America. It is typically found in woodland and on roadsides.

Part of the genus Stropharia (or roundheads). As the mushroom ages its cap broadens and becomes umboate, which means it gaines a little round bump in the centre of its cap! Example of a verdigris agaric with an umbo on the left:

Young mushrooms (right) are vivid green/blue and are very slimy. As they age their colour fades and becomes yellow, this is usally found around the centre of the cap. The mushroom eventually loses all of its original pigment, here are some examples:

Weather the mushroom is edible is debated many guidebooks state that it is poisonous while according to others it is edible and has a mildly spicy taste.

There is little known about the effects of the mushroom if it is poisonous, or what sorts of toxins it contains.

Wisdom of Mushrooms

Stropharia aeruginosa, commonly known as the blue-green stropharia, or verdigris agaric is a medium-sized green, slimy woodland mushroom, found on lawns, mulch and woodland from spring to autumn. The edibility of this mushroom is controversial - some sources claim that it is edible, while others claim it to be poisonous, although effects are little known and its toxic constituents undescribed.
