You’re Losing Me
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Summary: Dating a colleague has always been an exhilarating experience. However, as you reach a point where you’re ready to take the relationship further after spending years together, doubts start to creep in. You begin questioning whether you’re the only one putting effort into saving something that seems to be slowly fading away.
Pairing: Aaron Hotchner x BAU!Fem!Reader
Warnings: taylor swift’s song “you’re losing me”, angst, fluff, coworker relationship, language, drowning, stabs, injuries, usual criminal minds stuff, use of y/n, lovers to exes to lovers again, not really unrequited love, insecurity, making out, happy ending
Word Count: 7,938 (the longest one shot i’ve written so far…)
Note: It’s been so so so long since I’ve posted anything on here, so enjoy a little Aaron Hotchner one shot! I’m think of writing an Aaron Hotchner/Criminal Minds series, similar to my Steve Harrington/Stranger Things series, but it may take me a while to finish writing the entire thing. Maybe I’ll write a few chapters and then upload those and write along as I go but I don’t want to do that in case I lose motivation throughout the midst of it. We’ll see what happens! It’s just that I’m super busy but I have such great ideas for this series!

As the sunlight slowly filtered through the windows, you began to awake from your slumber. Opening your eyes, you gazed at the ceiling and felt the comforting embrace of a pair of arms around your waist. Turning your head, you smiled at the man sleeping beside you and planted a gentle kiss on the top of his head. After disentangling yourself from his arms, you got out of bed.
Quickly, you took a shower, brushed your teeth, and dressed for the day. Upon leaving the bathroom, you found your boyfriend, Aaron, sitting at the edge of the bed, rubbing his eyes. “Morning, Aaron.” You greeted him.
He looked up with a grin, standing up to meet you. “Morning.” He responded, giving you a kiss on the cheek before heading to the bathroom himself.
You then entered Jack’s room to wake him up and get him ready for school. Seeing him still asleep, you approached with a gentle touch, waking him with a soft rub on his head. “Jack, sweetie, it’s time to wake up.”
Jack groaned, still half-asleep. “Five more minutes.”
You chuckled, playfully poking his cheek. “Come on, buddy. You’ll be late for school.” Eventually, Jack sat up in bed, and you left his room with a cheeky smile.
Preparing breakfast for your two boys, you heard footsteps down the hall. Setting the plates on the table, you watched as Jack settled into his seat. “Thank you, Y/N! This looks good!”
Nodding, you gave him a quick kiss on the forehead before you and Aaron sat down at the table. He reached out to hold your hand as a gesture of thanks, which made your heart flutter with affection.
After bidding Jack farewell and dropping him off at school, you and Aaron began your drive to work. Upon arriving, you entered the office first, as your relationship with Aaron was not public knowledge except to Strauss. You both agreed to keep it quiet to avoid potential workplace issues, though you wouldn’t mind being open about it if the opportunity arose. You weren’t entirely sure how Aaron felt about that.
Sitting at your desk, you watched Aaron make his way upstairs to his office, trying not to draw any unnecessary attention. Your colleagues, Emily, Derek, Elle, Spencer, and JJ, were already at their desks, engaged in friendly chatter while working on their paperwork. You joined in, laughing at Emily and Derek’s playful banter.
At times, you felt the urge to spend more time with Aaron in his office, but you respected his decision to keep your relationship private. However, you couldn’t help but wonder if you were the only one who truly cared about the relationship. Four years together, and you were eagerly awaiting for him to pop the question. But that seemed to be indefinitely postponed. It sometimes felt like you were the only one putting effort into the relationship.
Fortunately, the entire day turned out to be pleasantly light. With no new cases, the office was buzzing with paperwork and fueled by several cups of coffee. Every so often, Penelope would come over to chat with all of you, as she often felt lonely in her own office. Her presence brought joy, and you always welcomed her with a warm smile, her infectious happiness lifting your spirits.
As the day drew to a close, the office was nearly empty, with only you, Aaron, and Elle remaining on the current floor. Elle grabbed her bag, ready to head out.
“See you tomorrow, Elle.” You called out, waving.
Elle smiled back at you. “You’re leaving right now, right?”
You nodded, turning to your desk to organize your files. “Yep, just need to gather these files and hand them over to Hotch.”
Her eyes shifted to the man in question, who was still seated at his desk in his office. “Does he ever sleep?” Elle asked, furrowing her brows.
Chuckling, you stood up. “I’d like to say yes, but he’s practically a robot.”
Elle hummed, and her gaze returned to you. “Do you want me to wait for you?” She offered.
You widened your eyes slightly, quickly clearing your throat. “Oh, no, you go ahead. I don’t want to keep you waiting.”
“It’s not a problem, honestly.” Elle reassured you, but you waved your hand dismissively.
“No, really. You can go on ahead. I have to ask Hotch a few questions about the paperwork, anyway.”
You noticed a subtle shift in Elle’s eyes, but you couldn’t quite pinpoint it. “Right. Well, I’ll see you tomorrow, Y/N.” She said, bidding you goodbye before making her way to the glass doors and stepping into the elevator.
Feeling a sense of relief, you let out a sigh, almost convinced that Elle had caught on to your and Aaron’s relationship. Shaking your head to dismiss such thoughts, you collected all the files and made your way up to his office, lightly knocking on the door. Aaron’s voice invited you in, prompting you to enter.
As he looked up from his work, his stern expression softened into one of happiness at the sight of you. You couldn’t help but grin, placing the files on his desk. “It’s late, we should get going.”
Furrowing his brows, Aaron checked the time, and his eyes widened in surprise. “Oh, I didn’t even realize how late it got.” He admitted, quickly gathering the files and organizing everything for the next day.
Both of you exited the building and walked to your car. Settling inside, you watched Aaron start the engine and drive off, your mind preoccupied with thoughts. You were contemplating whether to broach the topic of taking your relationship to the next level or even considering making it public. Although you should have felt at ease discussing it with Aaron, anxiety gripped your heart, causing it to beat rapidly.
Despite knowing Aaron to be the most kind-hearted man you’ve known for years, you couldn’t help but fear his response. You didn’t want this conversation to become a make-or-break moment for your relationship, yet you also couldn’t bear to keep hiding in the shadows any longer.
Arriving at your shared apartment, you both entered, setting your bags down by the door and turning on the lights. With Jack spending the night at Jessica’s, you and Aaron found yourselves alone, creating an opportunity for you to bring up a potentially important conversation.
Deciding to allow yourselves a moment to freshen up and have dinner before broaching the important topic, you wanted to ensure neither of you went to bed hungry in case the conversation didn't go smoothly.
After showering, having dinner, and relaxing, you finally felt ready to initiate the conversation. Throughout the evening, you sensed Aaron’s eyes on you, and it was time for him to ask what was bothering you.
“You’ve been tense all night.” Aaron observed, placing a reassuring hand on your shoulder as you both sat on the couch. “Is something wrong?”
Your mind raced through different approaches to the problem, but you still didn’t feel fully prepared as you began to respond to his question. “I’ve been doing some thinking.”
He arched an eyebrow, pulling you closer by wrapping his arm around your shoulder. “Care to share?”
With a tight-lipped smile, you took a deep breath, attempting to calm your nerves. “Have you ever considered...making our relationship public?”
As soon as the words left your mouth, Aaron’s arms dropped from your shoulder. Your heart sank to the pit of your stomach, dreading his response.
“Aaron?” You anxiously waited for his answer, but he fell silent, trying to find the right words to respond to you. “Can you please say something?”
Aaron’s face tightened with hesitation as he tried to find the right words to respond to your question. He glanced away, unable to meet your eyes directly, and sighed heavily. “I...I haven’t really thought about going public.” He finally admitted, his voice tinged with uncertainty. “Our relationship has always been private, and it’s been working for us. I’m afraid of how things might change if we make it public.”
Your heart sank, sensing the reluctance in his response. “But Aaron, we’ve been together for so long, and I’m tired of just hiding our relationship. I want to be with you openly, without constantly worrying about keeping it a secret.” You pleaded, tears welling up in your eyes.
“I know that.” Aaron said, his voice softening. “But we both know how the nature of our work is. If our relationship becomes public, it could jeopardize everything we’ve built here. I can’t risk that, especially for Jack’s sake.”
Frustration and sadness engulfed you, and you felt a surge of emotions welling up inside. “So, you’re choosing your job and keeping up appearances over us? Over me?” You exclaimed, your voice quivering with hurt.
“That’s not what I meant. It’s just not that simple.” Aaron replied, reaching out to touch your arm, but you pulled away.
“Then enlighten me, Aaron. What do you mean? Because maybe it’s not simple for you, but it is for me.” You said firmly, your heart breaking. “I can’t keep living like this. I deserve better than this, Aaron.”
He looked torn, his eyes reflecting his own pain. “I don’t want to lose you.” He murmured, his voice barely above a whisper.
“But you’re not willing to fight for us.” You responded, tears streaming down your cheeks. “Tell me, Aaron. Did you even plan on marrying me?”
His silence spoke louder than words, and it was all you needed to get your answer. The truth hung heavily in the air, and your heart shattered in less than two minutes, your fears coming true. The pain of realization washed over you, leaving you feeling raw and vulnerable.
You desperately wanted things to go back to how they were, to find comfort in the familiarity of your relationship. But deep down, you knew that settling for someone who didn’t put effort into the relationship wasn’t right for you. You deserved someone who cherished and valued you, someone who saw a future with you and was willing to fight for it.
“Looks like you’ve already lost me.” You said, your voice cracking with emotion. You hastily wiped away your tears, determined not to break down completely. Standing up from your spot on the couch, you avoided Aaron’s gaze as you walked away, trying to maintain some composure. “I’m sleeping in the guest room tonight.”
The realization that the love of your life might not have felt the same way about you as you thought shattered your heart into pieces. You couldn’t bear to stay in a relationship that made you feel worthless.
What made it even more painful was that Aaron had always been the kindest man you had ever known. He had made you feel loved, supported, and cared for, especially during your lowest moments. However, now, you couldn’t help but question everything.
“Dad?” Jack spoke, catching his father’s attention as he helped put his backpack on. “When is Y/N coming back?”
It had been a week since you and Aaron broke up, and the impact of the decision weighed heavily on both of you. In the aftermath, you moved out of Aaron’s apartment, leaving behind the memories of a once loving relationship. Aaron struggled with the reality that you weren’t living with him anymore. He had tried to apologize and convince you to reconsider, but you remained firm in your decision. You believed that taking some time and space apart was essential for both of you to figure out what you truly wanted.
“I’m not sure, buddy.” Aaron replied to Jack with a gentle smile, masking the turmoil within his heart. “Y/N needed some time to think about things, and we both agreed it was best to take some space for now.”
Jack frowned, sensing that something significant had changed. He missed having you around, and it was hard for him to understand the complexities of adult relationships. But he trusted his father and hoped that things would work out for the best.
Despite your desire for space, maintaining it was extremely challenging when you had to work together. Nevertheless, you were grateful that the rest of the team didn’t seem to notice any change in your demeanor towards each other. You made a concerted effort to act as you always did while on the job, which wasn’t too difficult, considering you had always portrayed your relationship as strictly professional, pretending to know each other only as coworkers.
Aaron despised himself for not being open and honest with you that night, for jeopardizing the relationship you had built over the years. He loved you deeply, and the thought of marrying you had crossed his mind countless times. However, fear had gripped his heart. The pain of losing Haley had left him hesitant about committing to another relationship, and he believed he could never truly move on. Yet, you had always supported him throughout that challenging time. Your constant presence by his side, understanding, and care had gradually allowed him to let go of his fears. Before he knew it, he had become deeply attached to you, and his love for you had grown immeasurably.
It wasn’t that he was ashamed of you that he didn’t want anyone to know about your relationship. Instead, Aaron feared that making it public might endanger you, given the high-stakes nature of their work and the potential risks involved. He wanted to protect you from any repercussions that might arise if their personal relationship were exposed in the often dangerous and unpredictable world they worked in. Although it pained him to keep your love hidden, he believed it was a necessary precaution to keep you safe. After Haley, he didn’t want to make the same mistake again.
Now, he felt utterly foolish. Regret washed over him as he realized he should have communicated with you more openly, explaining why he felt the way he did instead of leaving you to question his love. The pain of knowing that you thought he didn’t reciprocate your feelings, that you believed he was ashamed of you, weighed heavily on his heart.
He wished he could turn back time and find the courage to share his fears and concerns with you, to let you know just how much he loves and values you. The thought of causing you any hurt had never been his intention, but he had failed in expressing himself clearly.
The team sat aboard the private jet, en route to your destination for a new case that demanded your immediate attention. Three homicides, spread across different cities, all linked by a hauntingly similar MO. The victims shared connections that hinted at a calculated pattern, but local law enforcement had hit a dead end, prompting the call for FBI assistance.
Aaron and you purposefully chose seats away from each other, not wanting to add any awkwardness to the already tense situation. As the team delved further into the case, everyone meticulously examined the evidence within the case files.
You scanned through the disturbing details, striving not to let any grimace betray your inner emotions. Over the years, you had grown accustomed to such gruesome cases that it took an emotional toll on even the most seasoned profilers. Yet, you knew that suppressing your emotions was essential to focus on the task at hand.
“Morgan, Prentiss, and Elle, I want you three to check the latest victim’s crime scene and look for anything new. Reid, JJ, and L/N, I need you to head to the coroner’s office and examine the autopsy reports.” Aaron said, making brief eye contact with you for a second before turning his attention back to the team. “Rossi and I will head to the precinct to talk to the local PD and settle in.”
As soon as the jet landed, you, JJ, and Spencer swiftly made your way to one of the BAU SUVs and drove to the coroner’s office to examine the bodies. You were driving the car, while JJ was in the passenger seat, and Spencer was sitting in the back. You conversed with the other two throughout the entire drive, Spencer spitting his genius facts every now and then.
Once you made it inside, the three of you were greeted by the coroner, who led you to the room where the bodies were laid out. Carefully examining the wounds on the victims, you couldn’t help but notice something intriguing. “They’ve all been stabbed exactly twenty times, each stab in a different part of the body.” You stated, glancing at JJ and Spencer for their input. “This was rage.”
Spencer leaned in, his eyes narrowing with concentration. “The repetitive nature of the stab wounds indicates an intense emotional release, possibly stemming from deep-seated anger or frustration.”
JJ nodded in agreement, her empathy guiding her understanding of the crime scene. “Maybe the unsub had a personal vendetta against the victims, and he was trying to send a message with the way he’s stabbed them.”
Spencer couldn’t help but share one of his characteristic and oddly fascinating facts. “Did you know that throughout history, the number twenty has often been associated with completeness and cycles? It’s interesting that the unsub chose this specific number.”
You raised an eyebrow at him, contemplating the possibility. “Or maybe the number twenty was important to him? It could hold some significance to the unsub, and he chose it to exert control or leave a twisted signature on the victims.”
JJ nodded in agreement, her eyes reflecting the shared curiosity. “It’s definitely not uncommon for unsubs to attach meaning to their actions or rituals. The number twenty might be a representation of something personal or symbolic to him.”
Spencer’s eyes lit up, adding on to you and JJ. “Numerology has been linked to criminal behavior in certain cases. The choice of numbers might reflect the unsub’s belief in its power or its alignment with his twisted motives.”
As you carefully examined the stab wounds on the victims’ lifeless bodies, a particular detail caught your attention. There was an absence of significant bleeding around the wound sites. The wounds appeared uniform in depth and angle, lacking the telltale signs of hemorrhage typically associated with antemortem stabbings.
You turned to the coroner with a furrowed brow. “These stab wounds...they seem different from typical antemortem injuries. Is there any indication that the victims might have been submerged in water before the stabbing?”
The coroner paused, considering your observation. “Well, we did find traces of water in the airways and lungs of all the victims during the autopsies.” The coroner replied. “It’s possible they were drowned before the stabbings occurred.”
“He’s drowning them and then stabbing them?” JJ questioned, her arms crossed against her chest. “What about signs of sexual assault?”
The coroner shook her head. “There were no signs of sexual assault in the report.”
Spencer chimed in, his gaze intense. “It’s possible that this unsub’s violent ritual provides him with a sense of release. The act of drowning the victims may serve as a form of control or domination, followed by the symbolic significance of twenty stabs, and perhaps linked to a personal obsession or fixation.”
You added to Spencer’s insight. “The number twenty might hold significant meaning to him, reinforcing the notion that these killings are deeply personal and methodically planned.”
JJ looked troubled, contemplating the unsettling pattern before you. “If he’s targeting the victims like this, he might have a connection to them. Something in their past could be triggering this cycle of violence.”
You nodded your head, your gaze remaining fixated on the lifeless forms. “Let’s head back and meet with the others.”
The three of you met up with the rest of the team at the precinct, where you all gathered around the crime board, sharing your findings and insights from the investigations. As each detail was added to the board, the case started to take shape, revealing disturbing connections and patterns.
Throughout the meeting, you couldn’t help but sense Aaron’s occasional glances in your direction. Part of you hoped he would approach you and start a conversation, maybe even attempt to mend what was broken between you both. Yet, another part of you felt a tinge of relief that he hadn’t approached you, as facing him would only reopen the wounds that were still raw.
It had only been a week since the painful breakup, and you found yourself torn between wanting to be understood and yearning for his apologies, and the need to protect yourself from further heartache. The longing for him to realize his mistakes, coupled with the desire to put the pieces of your life back together, weighed heavily on your emotions.
You also couldn’t help but miss Jack dearly. Saying goodbye to him before you left had been one of the hardest moments, knowing that he couldn’t fully comprehend the reasons behind your departure. The memories of the mornings you spent with him, preparing breakfast and engaging in playful moments, tugged at your heartstrings. You had cherished those moments, but you knew that staying in an emotionally draining situation wouldn’t be fair to either of you.
At the end of the day, exhaustion weighed heavily on the entire team, the toll of the stressful investigation demanding a much-needed rest. However, they were confident in the amount of evidence gathered, giving them a solid foundation to construct a profile when they regrouped.
Reaching the hotel, the team bid each other farewell, knowing they’d reconvene in the morning to continue the investigation. You let out a weary sigh as you entered your room, eager to collapse onto your bed. Shutting the door behind you, you finally allowed yourself a moment of peace. Without delay, you made your way to the bathroom, seeking to refresh yourself after the intense day.
Emerging from the shower, you felt more relaxed. After brushing your teeth, you slipped into comfortable sleepwear, embracing the coziness that enveloped you.
As you were about to settle into your bed, there was a knock on your door. Confusion washed over you, wondering who could be visiting at this hour. Walking cautiously to the door, you peered through the peephole and let out a soft sigh upon recognizing Aaron’s familiar face.
You opened the door, raising an eyebrow, giving him the signal to speak. His nervous demeanor was uncharacteristic of the stoic Aaron Hotchner, who rarely showed any signs of anxiety.
“Can I come in?” He asked, and a part of you wanted to roll your eyes at his request, but you held back your emotions. Suppressing a disgruntled noise, you opened the door wider, allowing him to enter your room.
Aaron wasted no time, quickly stepping inside as if he feared you might change your mind and shut the door on him. His uneasiness was palpable, and you couldn’t help but wonder what had driven him to seek you out in this vulnerable state.
With the door closed, you faced him, waiting for an explanation as to why he had come to your room at this late hour. “How are you?” He questioned, and you almost scoffed.
“What do you need?” You asked instead, completely ignoring his question.
His heart twinged with pain when he heard your voice, sensing the coldness in your tone, a reflection of the hurt he had caused. Taking a deep breath, he gathered his courage, determined to make things right. “I wanted to apologize for everything. I hated how things ended between us, and if I could turn back time, I would do so in a heartbeat just so I wouldn’t be the one who broke your heart.”
Your arms were crossed protectively over your chest, and he could see the struggle behind your eyes as you fought back tears. The mere week of separation had been agonizing, making him yearn for your presence more than ever. He longed to hold you in his arms again, to kiss you like they had for the past four years. But he understood that he couldn’t expect you to forgive him so easily.
“Jack misses you.” He continued, his voice laced with regret. “He asks for you every day, wondering if you’ll come back. It breaks my heart each time he does.” Your heart ached for the little boy, whom you had grown to cherish as your own. “And I miss you too, more than I can put into words. I’m willing to do anything and everything to fix things.”
Your gaze locked with his, and he saw the emotions swirling within you. “Aaron, I don’t know.” You began, and he felt his heart drop, fearing your answer. “How do I know you won’t do the same thing again? You’re only saying this because you realized what you had after you lost me.”
He shook his head, almost reaching for your hands but stopping himself, respecting the space you needed. “No, that’s not true. I’ve always loved you, Y/N. Yes, I was an absolute idiot, but I’m not just saying this because I realized what I had after I lost you. You mean the world to me, and I love you. If you just let me show you that I won’t make the same mistake ever again. I want everyone to know you’re mine, and it was never my intention to hide you away. I love you, and I’ll do whatever it takes to make things right.” His voice was filled with sincerity, pleading for another chance to prove his love and commitment to you.
You bit your bottom lip, trying to think of what to say. “Aaron, I think I need some time.” You said, truthfully. “I just need some space to figure out what I truly want. Throughout all these years, I’ve longed for you to prioritize us, but it never happened. Maybe I was too naive to believe it ever would.” Taking a deep breath, you closed your eyes, avoiding the pained look on his face. “I love you, too, but I can’t ignore the fact that I wanted you to put me first, instead of this job, and to consider a future together. I wanted to get married, but I don’t think you felt the same.”
He was about to say something, but you held up a finger, needing to continue.
“Honestly, I probably wouldn’t marry myself either.” You confessed softly. “I’ve spent so much time trying to please everyone, especially you. It’s been exhausting, trying to be the perfect girlfriend or even a future wife, when it felt like I was the only one making an effort. I sent you countless signals, hoping you’d notice, but it seemed like you didn’t want to acknowledge the cracks in our relationship.”
You let out a deep breath, relieved to have finally expressed your thoughts that had been brewing for months. Opening your eyes, you looked at Aaron, and his broken appearance tugged at your heartstrings. You longed to turn his frown into a smile, to fix everything, but you knew it wasn’t that simple.
“You’re wrong.” He finally spoke, his voice cracking with emotion. You furrowed your eyebrows in confusion, listening intently. “Of course I wanted to marry you.” He continued, his eyes searching yours for understanding. “But I was just too scared.”
“Scared of what?” You asked softly, urging him to open up.
“Of losing you, though it seems like I already did.” He said, a sad chuckle escaping his lips that didn’t reach his eyes. “After Haley, I never thought I would be capable of falling in love again. I had built walls around my heart, convinced it was safer that way. But then you were always there for me and I let myself fall for you, and it scared me.” He paused, gathering his thoughts, and continued. “I couldn’t bear the thought of putting you in danger because of this job, just like I did with Haley and Jack. I blamed myself for her death, and I didn’t want history to repeat itself. That’s why I kept our relationship hidden. I was afraid it would expose you to unnecessary risks.”
Tears welled up in your eyes as you listened to his heartfelt confession. “Aaron.” You said, your voice filled with empathy. “You didn’t have to carry all that burden alone. We could have faced it together.”
He nodded, his eyes filled with remorse. “I know, and I should have trusted us more. But my fear consumed me, and I made a terrible mistake by pushing you away.”
You walked closer and reached out to gently touch his cheek, feeling the warmth of his skin beneath your fingertips. “I understand why you did what you did, but it hurt to be kept in the dark. We could have faced those fears together as a team, just like we always do in these cases.”
“I know, and I wish I had the strength to open up to you sooner.” He whispered, leaning into your touch. “I’m so sorry.”
You leaned your forehead against his, savoring the closeness between you. Bringing your free hand to touch his other cheek, you felt his arms wrap around your waist, drawing you even closer to him. “This could have gone so differently if you had opened up to me, Aaron.” You whispered, looking into his eyes with sincerity. “But I still think we need some time apart. Just for a little bit.”
He closed his eyes, absorbing your words, and then nodded his head. “I know, and if that’s what you want, then I won’t oppose it.”
“Okay.” You whispered back, feeling a mix of sadness and hope in your heart. He stepped back, giving you a soft smile, before he turned to walk towards the door. “Wait.” You called out, stopping him in his tracks. He turned around, and without hesitation, you gently cupped his face in your hands and leaned up to kiss him on the lips. It was a tender, lingering kiss, full of unspoken emotions. He held onto your hands, cherishing the brief moments of the kiss, until you finally let go. “Goodnight.” You murmured, your voice tinged with both affection and uncertainty.
He looked dazed, as if he were in some sort of dream, processing the intensity of the moment. He tried his best to speak, finally managing a quiet “Goodnight” before he turned and left your room.
The next day, the team gathered at the precinct, ready to delve into the evidence with fresh eyes after sleeping. However, it was a restless night for both you and Aaron. Sleep seemed elusive as you tossed and turned, your mind consumed with thoughts of everything Aaron had said. Meanwhile, Aaron found himself replaying the kiss you shared before he left, and he couldn’t shake the weight of your words and emotions regarding your relationship and his actions.
After a few hours of relentless effort, Penelope’s expertise paid off, and she managed to uncover a name and address for the unsub. Putting on your bulletproof vests, the team raced to the SUVs, determined to catch the dangerous individual before he could harm anyone else.
Arriving at the address, you were met with an empty house. The unsub was nowhere to be seen, so you scanned the surroundings for any possible clues. Aaron spoke up, his voice firm. “We need to find any leads, any hints on where he might keep his victims.”
The team split up, meticulously combing through the scene, searching for any shred of evidence that could provide a much-needed breakthrough. The tension was palpable, knowing that every moment counted in preventing further tragedy.
As you examined the area, some of the photos on the wall caught your eye. The pictures consisted of different landscapes, however, when you looked more closely, the pictures seemed to be connected despite it being in separate frames. You called the team over and examined the photos, sending them over to Penelope to help find the location.
Penelope’s voice came through on the comms, her excitement evident. “Guys, I think I’ve found something. The pictures seem to be at a park near the house! I’m sending you the address now!”
As soon as you got the address, you raced out of the house and back into the waiting SUVs, speeding towards the destination. Upon arriving at the location, you split into groups. You, Elle, and Emily formed a team, eyes fixed on the abandoned warehouse nearby. Silently, you pointed towards the building, an unspoken agreement passing between you. You slowly and quietly walked, guns at the ready as you approached the structure.
You skillfully maneuvered around the back, while Elle and Emily advanced with their guns and flashlight inside, searching the shadows for any traces of the unsub. As you searched the back and began to think it was clear, you suddenly felt a forceful grip clamp over your mouth, muffling any sound you might have made. Before you could react, a sharp impact hit your head, sending you reeling into temporary darkness.
As you gradually regained consciousness, your surroundings came into focus, and panic washed over you at the sight of the unsub standing before you. Fear pulsed through your veins as you realized you were weaponless and vulnerable. His sinister laughter sent shivers down your spine, and you knew you had to act fast.
His sadistic grin filled you with dread as he taunted you, relishing the power he held over you. Every instinct urged you to escape, but he had already restrained you with a cruel grip, leaving you little room to maneuver. Your heart pounded in your chest, and you desperately scanned your surroundings for any possible means of escape.
As terror surged through your veins, you realized you were next to a lake. The sight of its dark waters filled you with dread, as you knew the unsub intended to use it against you. With adrenaline coursing through your veins, you drew upon every ounce of strength you possessed, mustering a deafening scream in hopes that your team would hear you.
But the unsub was swift as well. Before you could make a move, he forcefully plunged you into the icy water. The coldness was shocking, stealing your breath away as he held you submerged. Panic surged through you as you fought against his unyielding grasp, struggling to resurface for air.
Despite your efforts, he held you down, with no chance of escape. Each time you managed to rise, gasping for breath, he mercilessly forced you back into the depths, determined to drown you just like all the other victims.
As darkness threatened to consume you, your mind raced with thoughts of your team. You wondered if they were close, if they could hear your cries for help, and if they would find you in time. You didn’t even know if they were nearby or if the unsub took you to a different location while you were knocked out. The uncertainty only deepened your desperation, as you clung to the hope that rescue was on its way.
As you struggled to hold on, your strength waned, and you found yourself slipping away, succumbing to the relentless pressure of the unsub’s grip. Helplessly, you surrendered to the suffocating darkness that surrounded you. That’s when a sudden, deafening gunshot pierced the air, tearing through the silence.
In the blink of an eye, the unsub’s hold on you loosened, and you were released from his grasp. He tumbled into the water, gone with a well-aimed bullet through his head. Aaron dropped his gun and leaped into the water without hesitation, desperately reaching for your lifeless form before it could go any deeper.
Emerging from the water’s grasp, Aaron clutched you tightly in his arms as the rest of the team rushed to assist. His heart raced with panic, his mind consumed by the fear of losing you. You were unresponsive, your eyes closed, and the once rhythmic rise and fall of your chest had ceased. Time seemed to stand still as he began chest compressions and performed CPR, his every action fueled by a desperation to revive you.
He had tears streaming down his face and his voice trembled with emotion as he begged you to fight, to come back to him. He refused to accept that this could be the end, that he might lose the person he loved with his entire heart once again. The rest of the team looked on, their hearts heavy with concern, but also filled with hope as they witnessed Aaron’s efforts to bring you back.
Derek kneeled beside Aaron, gripping his shoulders with urgency as he tried to intervene. “Hotch! Stop! Let someone else take over!” He yelled, attempting to divert his attention.
But Aaron was relentless, his focus solely on you. He brushed Derek’s hands aside, determination etched across his face. “I won’t stop until she’s awake.” He declared, resuming his life-saving efforts without a second thought. With every ounce of strength he possessed, he continued to administer CPR.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, you coughed and sputtered, water escaping from your lungs. Gasping for air, you struggled to find your breath. Aaron’s arms enveloped you in a tight embrace, holding you close as you fought to regain your composure.
“Oh, thank God.” Emily breathed, her hand pressed against her chest, relief washing over her after the initial fear.
Aaron released his hold on you, and Derek immediately enveloped you in a tight embrace. “Babygirl, you scared all of us.” He murmured, still feeling shaken by the close call. Elle, not one to be left out, quickly shoved Derek away and hugged you with genuine concern.
“We should’ve never let you go out there by yourself.” Elle expressed, feeling guilty that they had split up. “I’m so sorry.”
Emily, kneeling beside you, placed a reassuring hand on your back. “We should’ve gone together.”
You shook your head, offering a small smile to your caring teammates. “Stop blaming yourselves. It wasn’t your fault. You couldn’t have known what would happen. At least I’m okay now.”
“Yeah, but you were dead for a few minutes.” Emily retorted with a scoff, still grappling with the shock of the situation.
You understood their concern, but you also knew that in their line of work, these moments were unfortunately part of the job. You reassured them. “I’m alright now, thanks to all of you.” And Aaron. You thought. You locked eyes with him, offering a reassuring smile. Though he didn’t return the smile, the glint in his eyes spoke volumes, telling you how grateful he was that you were still alive.
The EMT’s thoroughly checked you over, ensuring there were no other injuries, and concluded that you were fine. You sat at the back of the ambulance, swinging your legs back and forth, absently touching the bandage on your forehead where the unsub had hit you.
As you looked around, you saw the scene filled with law enforcement personnel. The unsub’s lifeless body was being carried away on a gurney, wrapped in a white sheet. A mix of relief and anger washed over you. Relief that he could no longer harm anyone else, and anger that he had taken the easy way out, escaping true justice.
Turning to your right, you noticed Aaron glancing back at you from time to time. Summoning some courage, you raised a hand and waved at him. This time, he smiled. A small yet genuine gesture that warmed your heart. Derek, ever the observant one, caught the interaction and couldn’t help but smirk. Playfully, he nudged Aaron on the shoulder, urging him to talk to you. Aaron, true to his stoic self, gave Derek a brief glare, which only made Derek raise his hands in surrender, laughing as he watched his boss walk away.
Aaron’s voice softened as he spoke, genuine concern in his eyes. “Are you okay? Do you need anything?”
You smiled, appreciating his caring nature. “I’m fine, Aaron.” Patting the spot next to you, you invited him to sit, and he obliged. Turning to face him, you brought your legs up to your chest. “Thank you for saving me.”
He shook his head, gazing up at the sky. “Don’t thank me. I’m just grateful that you’re alive.” His eyes met yours, and you could see the tears welling up. “I should’ve been there to protect you. I shouldn’t have let you go by yourself.”
You reached out to touch his cheek, trying to console him. “It’s not your fault, Aaron. I made the choice to check the back alone while Elle and Emily went inside. The blame lies solely on the unsub. Please, don’t carry that burden on yourself.” As he attempted to hold your hand, you pulled away slightly, causing his heart to ache. You were aware of your team’s eyes on you and didn’t want to fuel any rumors.
“Sorry, they might see us.” You explained.
He scoffed, refusing to let go of your hands. “I don’t care if they see us. It would be a miracle if they didn’t suspect anything. I was going insane while trying to save your life.”
“Aaron–”
“I want everyone to know about us. I don’t care anymore. I’ll do everything in my power to keep you safe, but I will not let you go. You mean everything to me, and I’m sorry for everything.” His voice trembled with emotion. “Seeing you out there, not breathing, holding your lifeless body in my arms...I swear I didn’t know what I was going to do if you were gone. I love you, Y/N. And I will love you until the day I die.”
At his heartfelt words, you couldn’t contain yourself any longer. You pressed your lips firmly against his, cupping his face with your hands. He held onto your hands, responding with passion and intensity. The week had been long and stressful, but with Aaron finally admitting he didn’t care who saw you together, you embraced the moment, cherishing the love you shared with the man you couldn’t imagine living without.
You pulled away slightly, looking deeply into his eyes. “I love you too.”
“Marry me.” Aaron said, his voice filled with sincerity.
The shock registered on your face, mouth agape. “What?” You asked, your heart pounding.
“Okay, this wasn’t the way I planned on proposing to you, but I couldn’t wait anymore.” He chuckled, leaning his forehead against yours. “Will you marry me?”
You raised an eyebrow, playfully teasing. “I don’t see a ring anywhere.”
He rolled his eyes, a soft smile on his lips. “The ring’s hidden in my desk drawer at the office. I was waiting for the right time to propose, but I can’t wait any longer.”
Your eyes softened, and your heart warmed at his sweet gesture. “You bought a ring?”
Aaron nodded, gently kissing your hands. “I told you, I wanted to marry you. I want to marry you. I want to spend the rest of my life with you.”
Tears welled up in your eyes, but you quickly wiped them away, trying to contain your emotions. “Yes, Aaron Hotchner. I will marry you.” You said, a mixture of excitement and love in your voice.
He grinned, relief and happiness evident in his expression. “You will?” He whispered.
“Yes, a million times yes.” You replied, your heart soaring at the prospect of spending your life with the man you loved.
With that, Aaron pulled you into a tight embrace, his lips meeting yours in a passionate and loving kiss. The world around you faded away, and all that mattered was the promise of a future together, as partners in both love and life.
“Did you guys really think we didn’t know you two were together all this time?” Rossi questioned, a playful glint in his eyes as the team sat together on the jet, heading home after a successful case. “We aren’t profilers for nothing.”
Aaron rolled his eyes, trying to focus on the paperwork spread out on the table. You couldn’t help but chuckle at the lighthearted teasing. Finally feeling content in your life, you leaned back in your seat, feeling the warmth of Aaron’s presence beside you.
“It’s true.” Spencer chimed in with a smile. “We always knew you two were dating, but we didn’t say anything because you thought we didn’t know. It’s pretty funny, considering all the looks you give each other when–”
“Reid.” Aaron interrupted, cutting off the young genius before he could go further. The team stifled a laugh as Spencer mumbled out a quick “Sorry,” a sheepish smile on his face, and returned to his book.
JJ grinned mischievously. “Oh, come on, Hotch. We’ve seen the way you look at Y/N, and the way Y/N looks back.”
Elle nodded, adding her own insight. “Yeah, it was kind of adorable watching you two try to keep it a secret.”
You exchanged a knowing glance with Aaron, feeling a mix of amusement and affection. “Well, I guess we weren’t as subtle as we thought.” You admitted, a smile tugging at your lips.
His lips threatened to curl up into a smile, and you noticed it, playfully bumping your shoulders against his. He tried to maintain his composure, looking away and focusing his attention back on the paperwork, but his mind seemed to betray him as a soft smile tugged at the corners of his lips.
You couldn’t help but feel a surge of happiness at seeing that smile, knowing that you were the one who could bring it out in him. He was the tough and stoic leader to everyone else, but with you, he allowed himself to be vulnerable and open.
The rest of the team had amused grins on their faces, watching the two of you with knowing looks. Their usual boss, who rarely showed any emotion, appeared so content and happy whenever you were around. It was a sight they cherished, seeing the man they respected and admired, smile genuinely because of you.
As the night grew on, everyone on the jet was asleep, but you and Aaron were still awake. You laid your head on Aaron’s shoulder, your hand clasped with one of his, as he continued looking through the paperwork. It was a habit for him to bury himself in work, even during quiet moments like this.
You gently nudged the papers away, and he raised an eyebrow at you. “Stop, you need to sleep.”
“You need to sleep, too.” He whispered, his lips pressing against the top of your head in a tender gesture.
You sighed softly, giving him a determined look. “Okay, but you have to stop this. You can look at these when we get back, but for now, you need rest.”
A playful grin spread across his face, and he leaned forward to capture your lips in a sweet kiss. “Anything for you.”
You gladly kissed him back, feeling a rush of warmth and love for this man. His dedication to his job and his team was commendable, but you also wanted him to take care of himself. He deserved rest and peace, especially after the intense case and the events of the day.
You settled into a comfortable position, still holding each other’s hands, and let the gentle hum of the jet lull you both to sleep. In each other’s arms, you felt a sense of comfort that reassured you, everything had a way of falling into place as it was meant to be.

Tumblr media
Simon slept late into the next morning, lost to the world in a rare moment of utter relaxation. Skin scrubbed clean of its usual dirt and stubble, he looked almost boyish - troubled brow smoothed, dense frame gone lax in your arms. An image of vulnerable peace you’d wager few had witnessed in all his storied years.
Stirring faintly as you subtly moved, Simon nestled closer with a contented sigh, arm reflexively tightening its protective hold around your frame as if even in his sleep he sought to shield you from further harm.
Exhaustion had etched itself deep in him, but in the dull light seeping past lowered lashes you could see shadows beginning to fade from his features. A sight to lift even the most wounded soul’s spirit, seeing one who guarded others so staunchly finally finding solace in another’s care.
You would smile softly as you ran your thumb across his brow, smoothing away the rest of his worries as you cupped his cheek. You were careful not to wake him with the gentle touches, content to just watch him slumber for as long as he chooses.
You felt lucky to see him like this, and a large part of you thought taking a bullet was worth it. To be able to see him so relaxed and content was something you never thought you would be able to witness. It was like the eighth wonder of the world seeing him so…at ease.
You were hopelessly in love with this man, feelings that ran so deep it almost ached to feel them entirely. Your heart was filled to the brim with absolute adoration for Simon, and it was the one thing in your life you knew would never change, you would always be his.
Simon began to stir slowly as if sensing your tender gaze, even submerged in dreams. Blearily his eyes flickered open to meet your smiling face, and for a moment he simply blinked in bemused confusion - as if certain this couldn't be real.
But no, you were there. Warm and soft and smiling down at him like he was some kind of miracle himself. It still struck him dumb sometimes, the purity of your emotion shining through despite all he’s put you through. That you could look upon a wreck of a man like him and feel anything close to what swelled in his own heart.
Wordlessly, Simon reached up to lightly brush calloused knuckles against your cheek, drinking in every beloved feature like a dying man granted water. He didn’t deserve your forgiveness. Didn’t deserve the love shining in your eyes, warming him through like sunlight, but he'd be damned if he wasn’t going to spend every last day making sure you never regretted giving him a place beside you.
“Mornin’, Sunshine,” he rumbled, voice sleep-rough but smoldering with intent. Leaning up to capture your lips in a gentle kiss, Simon silently swore to spend his every waking moment showing you just how much you meant to him.
You would smile softly into the kiss, languid and slow in order to make up for lost time. It was only when you both needed to breath that you pulled away, a smile on your lips and eyes crinkled in happiness as his taste lingered on your tongue. You ran a hand through his bed tousled hair with a soft hum.
“Good morning, Si. Slept well, hm?”
Simon stretched out with a groan, nuzzling into your gentle touch like an oversized housecat. Your presence alone was enough to chase the last clinging shards of dreams from his mind, grounding him fully in this blessed moment.
“Mm, best sleep I’ve had in ages, darlin’,” he rumbled, pressing a lingering kiss to your palm.
Meeting your gaze steadily, Simon spoke softly, “from here on out, you’ll have me guardian’ your rest same as your safety. Ain’t no one gonna lay so much as a finger on you again, not while I still draw breath.” A gentle brush of calloused thumbs swept away imaginary tears, etching promise into your skin.
“Im settlin’ down for good, if you’ll have me,” always cautious of hoping, but trusting you to see straight to what lived beneath scar and grit.
Your heart stuttered at his words, nearly stopping as you took a minute to take in his statement.
“If I’ll have you,” you laughed softly, “as if I’ve ever wanted anything more.” Your words were firm, no space for him to think twice about the truth behind what you were saying.
Simon’s brows hiked in delight and disbelieving relief at your response. A brilliant, boyish grin broke across weathered features - for once unburdened by ghosts of his bloody past.
“Then I’m yours, darlin’. Mind, body and soul.” He pledged fervent promises between peppered kisses. “Gonna make you so happy you’ll forget I was ever nothin’ but a no-good outlaw.”
Rolling fluidly, Simon maneuvered your form beneath his bigger one, caging you safely in rough hands and walls of corded muscles. Gazing down at your beauty with something akin to wonder in whiskey eyes, he pressed his brow to yours.
“My light. My home,” he rumbled, pure affection sending shivers down your spine. Happiness felt strange on features so used to scowls - but by God, Simon was going to savor every sweet moment for all he was worth.
You giggled softly at his words and the ticklish feeling of his hasty kisses on your skin, a warm smile near permanent on your lips as you soaked up all the love you had missed out on these past years.
With a brain too fuzzy with pure affection, you spoke words you’d been wanting to for years, “I reckon we head North.” You said, heart once again speeding up as you realized the gravity of your words, you continued, though with waning confidence, “We could find a small plot of land - build ourselves a nice little home and a small barn and coop.” You were rambling as you reached under his arm to grab an envelope tucked into the bedside drawer, “these past couple of months without you here..I’ve been takin’ extra shifts at the saloon. Reckon I’ve got enough here for all that if we’re careful,” you said, hands shaking with fear of rejection as you held out the envelope as if worried he wouldn’t believe you.
Simon’s eyes widened into saucers at your proposition, heartbeat stuttering to a gallop in his heaving chest. For a long moment he could only stare in disbelief - scarcely daring to hope this was real. But then your shy explanation sunk in, washing over him with such a profound surge of pride and love he thought surely his seams would burst. All this time spent in your light, you’d been preparing your future without him even having a clue of knowing. Trusting that in hope when he’d scarcely trusted in himself.
Without warning Simon was clutching you tight against his pounding heart, raining desperate kisses across your sweet face near frantic with tender emotion. “Darlin’ you- this is more’n I ever dreamed could be mine,” he choked, rough thumbs wiping away tears he didn’t remember shedding.
Pulling back just enough to claim your lips in a long, slow glide of unbridled joy, Simon poured every ounce of reverence, gratitude, and love into the kiss for your blessing him so. “North it is, my light - and I’ll spend the rest of my days makin’ you proud of me.”
You would gasp at his sudden movement, holding on tight to him as he peppered kisses across your smiling face before eventually catching your lips with his.
With a soft, relaxed sigh you melted into the kiss, body melting in his hold as you looked up at him with shining eyes. You would cup his face, his cheeks squishing under your hold to create an almost laughable look as you moved your thumbs gently across scarred cheeks with loving ministrations.
“Was hoping you’d say that,” you whispered, giddy with the thought of starting a new life with this man.
Simon grinned unrepentantly down at you, “and what would I say but yes to the sweetest darlin’ this side of creation?” he rumbled, nuzzling fondly into your palm like some great, affectionate bear.
“North we’ll go then, just as soon as you’re on your feet,” Simon declared, pressing a lingering kiss to your brow. His hands swept reverently down your sides, lingering protectively over the slowly healing wound before tipping your chin up to meet his steady gaze.
“I’ll start preppin’ for the trip straightaway, and you just focus on getting your strength back, y’hear?” Low and intent, brooking no argument - but shining with a tenderness to disguise any threat in his words.
You would nod at his firm words, tucking yourself under his chin, “Can’t wait to see the mountains… and the pretty trees.” You said with a happy sigh, “oh! And snow! We’ll have to get cold weather gear - add that to your list.” You said as you grinned up at the man.
Simon listened with rapt attention, holding you close as vision of your bright future danced before his eyes.
“Snow, eh? Can’t say I’ve seen much of that white stuff before…” He mused thoughtfully, already calculating additions to be made to your little home to withstand Northern winters. Wool blankets aplenty, a sturdy chimney, thick oak doors - he’d ensure not a single draft could creep past your cozy walls.
“We’ll have the warmest cabin this side of the mountain, darlin’ - not a soul we’ll envy, I promise ya that.” Calloused fingers carded gently through your hair.
“Cabin or not, there ain’t a soul I envy as long as I have you, Simon.” You said almost immediately, words tumbling out so fast you didn’t remember even thinking them first.
Simon huffed a soft, affectionate laugh at your sweet words, cupping your cheek to brush a grateful kiss to your lips.
“And I you, darlin’. More’n any future this wanderin’ soul coulda dreamed.”
He would follow you to the end of the earth.
“Now, you just focus on healin’, Sunshine. I’ll go rustle us up some supplies proper,” with a soft parting kiss Simon crawled out of the warmth of the bed. With a soft promise to be back quick he left the cabin, boots crunching surefooted trails into the dusty streets. Townsfolk surely sensed the change in their resident outlaw.
True to his word, within quick hours supplies were stacked neat as you please - all necessities for your healing, the journey north, and simple homestead pleasures. Duty was done. Gently slipping back into covers rosy with sleep-warmth, he curled protectively around your rested form, home again at last where he belonged.
The next few days were spent with careful planning, mapping out safe routes and stops for supply refills should you need them.
The morning you were set to leave you were giddier than a child in a candy shop. While the wound still had tender healing to go through, the worst part had healed. There were a few aches here and there should you move too quickly, but nothing like the searing pain it once was.
“I’m ready, Simon!” You said, nearly skipping over to where he was packing the carriage.
Simon grinned wide as a cheshire at your bouncing excitement, spirits lifting further at your every sweet sound. You shone brighter than the rising sun, lighting his heavy heart like dawn breaking on winter’s gloom.
Gently steadying the horses with practiced care, he turned brown eyes alight with warmth and promise upon your rosy face. “Then let's be off to our future, Sunshine - I got a feelin’ It’s gonna be brighter’n any we left behind”
Kicking the team into a steady amble after climbing on, Simon settled back with a content sigh, surveying the dusty trail unfurling ahead like a red carpet rolled out just for their feet. Nothing but open sky and promise as far as the eyes could see - and each mile would bring them closer to simple joys he’d never dared dream.
Calloused fingers found yours, tangling together in bonds stronger than any chain. With your light to lead him true, Simon swore not a demon from either hell nor earth would tear him from you.
The journey was tiring - days spent riding along dirt roads and nights spent tucked away in the back of a little cart, straw bedding doing little to cushion against the splintered wooden planks.
Yet you wouldn’t trade it for the world  - not with Simon by your side to keep you warm and safe, to regale you with tales of his past life and adventures.
As you made your way through the northern mountains your body seemed to relax even more than it had been, gazing out upon the sacred land as you inched ever closer to your destination.
Each mile marker fell away like shackles, yet still Simon was loathe to see the journey end - if only to keep your radiance shining beside him a moment more.
Nights found him awake long after your restful breaths smoothed to dreams, watching over your slumber as stars wheeled endlessly beyond paper-thin walls. You were here, smiling still as dawn kissed snow capped pines in greeting, two weary souls near to their destination and all the hopes therein.
By mid-morn a cheer went up as a familiar clearing broke through evergreens. Turning brown eyes bright as brandy, Simon rumbled softly, “ Welcome home, darlin’.” He said, voice near a whisper as he took in the magnificent sight in front of him.
You would gasp as you finally reached the little plot of land, eyes wide as you took in the scene of gorgeous mountains behind and trees abound ahead.
The plot had been cleared just enough for all you talked about, including a little garden. A perfect dreamy homestead just waiting for your caring hands to create.
Simon let loose a rare, boyish whoop of delight at your awestruck expression, every hardship and dark deed weighing his heavy soul suddenly justified a thousand times over.
“I know it’s a sight a bit rougher than your sunny smile, but just you wait’ll I get my hands to work!” Brown eyes gleamed with fierce passion and promise, already thinking about feats of forestry and framing his calloused fingers itched to create.
With care belying his bulky frame, Simon quickly began unpacking essentials for a cozy camp - sparse but sufficient until more permanent lodgings could be raised from rich wood.
“For now let's get you fed and rest all proper,” he rumbled, pressing a doting kiss to your cheek.
After a humble meal of game Simon caught and red wine from a nearby town, you both fell asleep that night happy and looking forward to the next day when you could find helping hands to start making your perfect home.
It was about a month and a half later when you were done, with the help of many new kind folk, there standing proud and bright was a quaint cottage big enough for the two of you with a bit of extra room for hobbies. It was painted a soft shade of blue, a red wood door adorning the front and a cute little wrap around porch protecting your new shared home.
You stood outside, hands now rough and calloused from hard work resting on your hips as you stared at the building.
Simon slotted the final beam true, wonderment stealing his breath away as months of toil melted beneath the aching brilliance of your smile, every callus and strain of muscle well repaid.
Striding to your side, broad hands gently encircled your waist until foreheads met in shared bliss, eyes aglow with all the tender hopes this home’s thick walls now sheltered.
“Darlin’, I do believe we’ve gone an’ built us our own corner of heaven here,” he rumbled softly, thrilling to feel your heart swell against his in answer. No finer reward than seeing the light in your face nourished by comforts his hands had wrought.
Too choked with tears to respond, you took his hand and stepped inside the new home. The fresh scent of cedar and pine filling your nose as you explored each and every room with child-like wonder. Simon watched with a gentle smile as you explored your new domain, following dutifully behind as he too studied each detail with a sharp painter’s eyes, mentally furnishing each bare space with memories and comforts yet to be.
Turning you gently in well worn hands when the tour came to an end, Simon gazed upon your sweet face with all the devotion of endless skies.
You all but smirked up at him, planting a soft kiss on his lips before encircling your arms around his neck to press warm bodies together.
“Reckon we need to uh… christen that new bedroom of ours, hm?” You teased, a hint of something mischievous in your voice as you batted long eyelashes up at him.
Simon let out a low chuckle, eyes already turning dark as rich barley fields at your siren’s song. Fingers trailing feather-soft along the flawless planes of cheek and jaw long dreamed of, he peered deep into eyes overflowing with all he once believed himself unworthy of.
Scooping you up with practiced care, never breaking contact save to brush a reverent kiss to willing lips, Simon turned towards the bedroom with a purposeful stride.
“An’ why darlin’, I reckon that’s the finest idea I’ve heard in many a year,” gently shouldering through freshly hung door to deposit treasure of beyond calculating worth amidst downy rumples waiting to cradle your joinings, Simon gazed upon the angel fate had seen fit to place within his blessed and devoted keeping.
The night was spent with soft moans filling the room, Simon near worshiping your body as he pulled every whine and whimper he could out of your sweet lips. He was intent on showing you just how deeply he loved you, no doubt leaving you nearly unable to walk the next morning because of it.
As you lay in the bed, the only furniture in the house, you gazed out the window with a weary yet blissful gaze - body content with the pleasure it had been blessed with before you fell asleep with a happy hum, spent bodies pressed against one another as you drifted off into a peaceful slumber. The next days and weeks would bring their own hardships, but here in this moment you were safe and full with love. With Simon holding you close and protective in his arms you were happier beyond belief, and you felt more than lucky that you would get to feel this same way for the rest of your new shared lives. You had saved Simon from damnation, your golden light pulling him from the dark. You were his salvation, his everything.

Lovejoy Take the Indie Rock Scene by Storm
Tumblr media
Lovejoy is in this article!
Formed in 2021, Lovejoy is one of the newest and hottest bands in the indie rock world, building their name around their snappy lyricism, captivating melodies, and overall playful personalities. Comprised of lead vocalist Will Gold, guitarist Joe Goldsmith, bassist Ash Kabosu, and drummer Mark Boardman, the English quartet has already built quite the following through the releases of their three EPs. Their most recent release, Wake Up & It’s Over, came out in May this year, debuting at No. 5 on the UK album charts. Their schedules have been packed, as they did their first US headline tour this spring, topped off by a performance on the main stage at New York’s Governors Ball Music Festival. I had the absolute honor and pleasure of catching up with the guys after their performance at GovBall to discuss their recent successes, unexpected influences, and their hidden abilities:
To start off, let’s discuss your performance earlier today! How was it getting to play at GovBall and see all of your fans?
Will Gold: It was really, really fun.
Ash Kabosu: It was really cool. It’s like the end of a long-ass tour. It was a really nice endcap to everything we’ve been doing in America. It was cool to play New York again. We were here in December last year, and New York crowds are always really cool. I always fucking love this place!
WG: GovBall’s been absolutely incredible so far. Our set was really fun, and it’s always a pleasure to do any sort of main stage or any big stage that we get to perform our songs. It’s always a bit of a blessing.
Joe Goldsmith: We’ve done quite a few festivals, and I think we’ve played the best that we’ve played at any festival. We’ve done four, and that was the best we’ve played.
AK: Actually, we’ve done five! We played Manchester twice.
JG: I’d say that was the best we’ve performed. It was really fun.
Are there any artists that you’re hoping to catch while you’re here?
AK: A ton! I want to see Oliver Tree, Snail Mail
JG: Kenny Beats, Suki Waterhouse would be cool.
AK: Suki is fucking great; we’ve seen them at a few festivals now, and they’re really nice.
Are there any artists that you’re inspired by that fans might be surprised by?
AK: It is only basslines, so you don’t really notice, but I take a lot of inspiration from Idiot Pilot. They’re a small band from back in the emo days. I really like Loathe; I think they’re incredible. They’re just a completely different genre, and you wouldn’t really notice if I didn’t tell you just now.
WG: I get a lot of rhythms from Japanese math rock.
Mark Boardman: A lot of my style of playing comes from bands like Northlane and all these metalcore bands, like Thornhill. Even old stuff from Bring Me The Horizon, that’s the stuff that got me into double kick and stuff. Northlane, especially with the cymbal placement and the double kicks, the space, I love it.
JG: Sometimes I get some weird guitar influences from shoegaze bands, like DIIV or Slowdive, bands like that. It’s stuff like that but also random Japanese city rock from the 80s.
Japan is always living in the future!
JG: Yeah, it’s so cool!
WG: Specific bands that I really like are tricot, Chon, things like that.
I love that you guys mentioned these other influences and how they play a role in your current creation! Are there any other genres that you want to dabble in or draw inspiration from in the future?
JG: I really want Mark to do a jungle drum breakdown at some point in a song because jungle drums are fucking so catchy and boppy, and they’re so fun to groove to. I think we could pull it off, so I think that’s going to be a challenge for Mark.
MB: That’d be really sick. We’d get to experience playing around with a lot of different sounds because it’s a whole lot of cymbals and shit, so that’d be really fun to do that. We’d have to see where it fits though. We’ll get it done.
Which song of yours do you think defines your band the most?
WG: That’s kinda “Call Me What You Like.” Or “Portrait of a Blank Slate.”
AK: We’re still kinda figuring who we are, so it’s difficult to kinda pin it down. I think the songs are just different periods of our development, so I guess it’d be the most recent ones.
What was it like forming your band over the past few years and getting to tour the world so quickly in your careers?
WG: Different. I don’t know if it was more or less difficult. I feel like bands that form and grow on the Internet seem to have a lot of scrutiny for bands that grow the old-fashioned touring way and vice versa—bands that tour and go through that tend to have a lot of scrutiny for the Internet bands. I feel like we could all learn something from each other. I feel like there’s a lot of crossover and important things we can learn. We definitely haven’t done it perfectly, but we’ve done it our way, and that’s what matters.
AK: I feel bad for the bands that are forced to make TikToks all the time. That shit sucks, dude. Just let them make music; that’s what they’re good at!
WG: I like making TikToks.
AK: Yeah, but that’s us: we’re Internet-brained.
If you could switch roles with one of your bandmates for a day, whose role would you want to take on?
WG: Probably Ash.
AK: I’m very happy being me.
It’d be just for a day!
WG: Oh, I’d be the bassist.
AK: I’d be Mark just so I could understand how his brain works.
WG: Oh, we’re being in the other person’s brain? I thought we were just switching instruments.
It’s just switching roles, not bodies!
AK: Oh, okay! Well, not Mark. I would fuck that up so bad.
MB: I want to be Joe and do a guitar solo, slide on my knees. I’d be lead [guitar].
AK: I also want to be lead [guitar].
JG: I’d sing. Nobody wants to be drums.
If you could devise a conspiracy theory involving your band, what would it be?
JG: We're not real.
AK: Yeah, we’re actually AI-generated. We were an earlier iteration of ChatGPT that actually fabricated itself into human beings. It’s very advanced; you’ll probably see this roll out in the next 4-5 years. There’ll be loads of AI bands—we’re the first.
WG: Mine would be that we started the Spanish flu. You remember that pandemic 490 years ago or whatever it was? It definitely wasn’t rampant civilization and technological booms and livestock.
If there were band member Olympics, what events would there be?
MB: Hot dog eating.
Do you guys do a lot of hot dog eating?
MB: Oh yeah, we’re glizzy munchers.
WG: Do we?
MB: Me and Joe don’t eat meat, so yeah, lots of hot dogs!
WG: Don’t ask Mark any more questions! 100-meter, discus, archery, let’s just have the full shebang! I don’t know how we’ll do it, but I just want to see how we’ll do.
AK: I’m not really good at any physical capacity-
WG: Bobsled.
Don’t they have video games now in the Olympics?
JG: Esports type shit! I was thinking skating, as well.
AK: I’ll do some longboarding then.
JG: I’ll play some Tetris for a gold medal.
Any messages you’d like to send your fans?
JG: You’re the best. We appreciate everything that you say and give to us, except for Steve. We don’t care for Steve.
After our quick chat, the guys huddled around a tree in the media area to take portraits, which immediately escalated into a climb up the tree to pose for a few photos. Even in our short time together, all of them were incredibly gracious and took every opportunity to let each of their personalities shine, whether it be through silly facial expressions in their individual photos or laughing along to one another’s goofy mannerisms. Although they were one of the opening acts of the Saturday lineup, their fans came out to show their support, screaming along to each song as if Lovejoy were headlining the main stage. One other photographer mentioned to me that a fan told him that they were only at GovBall to see Lovejoy play, which is true commitment.
Since their GovBall appearance, the band has since played Glastonbury Festival in England and Open’er Festival in Poland, topped off by a headline spot at Belgium’s Rock Werchter. For a band in their earliest years, it’s evident that this is not the last you’ll hear of Lovejoy as the band continues to grow and tour the world. The massive support that they’ve garnered over the past few years is also a testament to their talent and their potential to be one of the biggest names within the indie rock scene as a whole. If you haven’t already hopped on the Lovejoy train, there’s no better time than the present, as there’s no telling what they’ll achieve next!

Thank you, sweets! 🎀
Tumblr media
Part One. Client One: John Price.
Tumblr media
The clack of your heels were heard through the halls as you smiled brightly, excited to get to know one of your new clients.
You had two sheets on a clipboard in your arms, a notepad in the other and a tote bag in your left arm.
You had some things you’d like to discuss with him, comforts, favorite snacks and tea. These are important you know! You always got the jitters when you had a new client.
Walking into your small office you sat your bag down on the side of your chair, and placed the clipboard and notepad neatly on your desk.
A sigh left your mouth and you rolled your neck around, trying to crack it and find relief.
“Mm.. ok, where to start..?” You mumbled to yourself as you looked at your bag and nodded.
Starting to unload everything you put your thermal cup filled with peppermint tea on your desk, a sketchbook, coloring book, and coloring pencils neatly into a pile.
Next you pressed the button on your work phone to hear all of your new voice mails and put lights on, in the dimly lit room.
You had two lamps that brightened the room with a nice yellow hue and a flower lamp on your desk that shined a pink light.
“Ms. Kate left a voice message, it says, ‘Good morning, you said 9:30 but we’ll be there a bit earlier than that. He’s adamant about being early to things. John is a very— He’s a man that likes to stay on the move you know? Keep that in mind. He likes his hands full. Anyways, see you around 9:20– 25. Thank you, Again.’ —”
You laughed at her comment, knowing well you like to have your hands full too and can’t stay doing nothing for too long.
The time on your clock stated 9:15, so they’d be here soon. There wasn’t much else you needed to set up in your cozy office but you decided to fluff out the pillows on the couch across from your desk and prep your notes.
Finally, after you killed some time drawing in your sketchbook you heard a knock on your door. There was quiet chatter.
“Come in please! You called out, closing your sketchbook and looking up towards the door.
In walked in who you assumed was Kate Laswell and behind her was a handsome gruff looking man. He was very well built, a nice beard and mustache and he looked around the same age as the woman. He also had a nice ass but you shook your head away from those thoughts.
Standing up your walked around your desk and grinned widely, you stated your name and then, “It’s a pleasure to meet the both of you. I’m very excited for todays session if you couldn’t tell..”
“Nothing wrong with that. I’m hoping this goes smoothly.” The man, who you’re sure is John, smiles at you and nods approvingly.
“Yes, you won’t give her a hard time right?” Kate jokes and he shakes his head and raises his eyebrows.
“She should be worried about Soap. That man is a twat sometimes.” You chuckled along with him and waved your hand dismissing that.
You pointed to the couch and asked them to have a seat so you could talk to them about basics first and grabbed your notepad and a pen, sitting in your chair.
“Before we start, I want to re-introduce myself. My name is y/n, and I’ve been doing art therapy for three years. I have a degree in arts and a degree in counseling/therapy.” You waved your hands around as you talked.
Kate and John nodded at your words as you spoke and they seemed pretty impressed with what you said.
“Kate Laswell, John Price. It’s nice to meet someone enthusiastic like you.”
You smiled at the comment and then let the two settle in on the couch. Tapping your fingers in your desk you spoke again.
“Ok so, I’m sure you may have questions that you wanted to ask personally! Some worries and concerns?” You tilted your head to the side and smiled, “Or would you like me to give you a brief explanation on what I strive to achieve with art therapy?”
“It’s be nice if you explained it better.. I feel like this is too childish for a man like me.” John commented.
“Mhm, I understand what you mean. A lot of people believe that but it’s all about what works for YOU. Art is a form of expression that anyone can use. Why not incorporate that into helping others and finding yourself too, Hm?” You aided.
It was a bit silent in the room after what you said. John nodded his head, his arms crossed over his chest and pursed his lips, turning to face Kate.
“I like you. Hopefully the boys will too. God knows we need this type of energy with the line of work we’re involved in.” Kate sighs, “I’ll take my leave, and be back around.. 10:30?”
“Yes! 10:30 or you can come around 10:25. Either works for me, If it works for you,” You got up and extended your hand, “Thank you, by the way. I live my life as optimistic as possible and like to bring that into the workplace.”
Kate nods and shakes your hand. Her hold is firm and strong, she’s a kind woman.
“John, play nice.” She said, facing the older man, before leaving and giving you a smile.
After she left you looked at Price and clapped your hands together.
“Well, now I have some personal questions for you. These are about boundaries but I hope you do know we might have to cross them once in a while ok?” You sat on top of your desk this time moving your notepad and pen onto your lap.
John folded his hands on his lap and looked at you in your eyes. It was silent for a moment yet again, though you didn’t mind. If he needed time to formulate his words you’d give him all the time in the world.
He opened his mouth then closed it, with a huff he said, “There’s not many boundaries I have, I’m sure you’re supposed to start slow when doing these sessions, yea?” you nodded, “So I believe you won’t be asking too much about me yet, so when the time comes.. I’ll be somewhat of an open book.”
He smiled at you slightly, tight lipped and tapped his fingers against his knuckles.
You took a breath in, then let it out. Humming at his words you write down on your note pad:
‘Price. Little to no boundaries at all. Open book maybe by the third sesh.’
His eyes watch your fingers as you’re writing, he’s a bit tense, not really knowing what to do. He can already imagine Simon being worse than he is right now.
“Ok so! I do have a question that Ms.Kate didn’t really specify, and I forgot to ask. Is there a problem that’s bugging any of you? Or is this just to maintain a good mind set— or close to an ok mind set?” You put your hands out, trying to elaborate in a more understanding way, “For example, keeping your anger in check, having an outlet to let out heavy emotional burdens.. those types of things?”
John ran his fingers through his beard and tapped his foot on the ground, thinking on what you said. He didn’t exactly have any thing bugging him, he’s been working in the military for well around 18+ years and that’ll get you used to the atrocities you see.
“I’m pretty sure Kate had the latter in mind when doing these sessions. I know I don’t have much bugging me, I’m about ready to retire sometimes,” he joked with a laugh, “It’d be nice to have an outlet from what we do every now and then.”
You laughed with him and nodded your head. His words resonated well with you. Anyone knew that working in the military/army would drain you. Could leave you mentally unwell after years.
So you strived to understand and learn each and every one of these men. To hopefully be able to aid them in different, helpful ways.
“Well, im glad you think so! Now, I actually have something I want you to do today. It’s very simple.”
Pulling out a coloring book and some color pencils, you held them out in front of you, “So, we won’t be doing anything too big— yet! I have a coloring book here that goes based off of mood. It’s also a journal. I want you to write in this everyday, starting today, ok?”
John raised his brows at you and you raised yours back. He scratched his beard and looked down at the coloring book with different mood faces on it. He took a copy of one book and a pack of coloring pencils you offered after.
You opened up the book to the first page and pointed to the happy face. Underneath the face were lines and a quote that asks you why you were feeling the emotion you were feeling.
“Currently I’m feeling happy, I’ll take a yellow pencil and color that face in.” You explained simply, “I’m feeling this way because I’ve had my favorite tea, my cat cuddled with me this morning, and I’m looking forward to my new clients.”
Once you finished you turned the book around and showed John. “That’s all you have to do. Nothing too long, but if you prefer to do that I don’t mind. Just don’t give me a word or two. I want one to three sentences.”
You watched as he began to do what you did. He colored in the neutral face with a brown colored pencil and underneath he wrote two sentences explaining why he felt that way.
For the rest of your session you introduced yourself more and had him give you tid bits about his life and line of work. In your mind you wanted to have this space be as personal but comfortable as possible.
You talked a bit about your life as well, giving him insight into your day to day life and how your other sessions go sometimes without disclosing private information about your other clients.
Soon enough the time came to when he had to leave and your session ended.
As Kate waited by the door, you put your hand out towards John, “I hope to see that book filled out. If anything is bothering you after today, write it down and we can go over it, yea?” He nodded his head shaking your hand, and let out a gruff ‘yes’.
He left with that and you were alone in your office thinking over this mornings events. It was slow paced and simple. You didn’t like unpacking a lot of information on the first day. Over time they’d get more comfortable and the art part of this would help them express how they felt without speaking. Actions are always far bigger than words.
You cracked your knuckles and went back to your chair, looking through your schedule planner, tomorrow you’d have a man by the name of Simon ‘Ghost’ Riley.
Huh, what a name.

Six Sentence Sunday
Tumblr media
Yes, 2023 is drawing to a close. Yes, I have been lurking for (I think) months at this point. Yes, I have been writing. Thank you so much to everyone who has been tagging me in recent weeks/months, I'm so sorry I haven't been interacting as much with you all as I have in the past. In the last few months I just haven't had the social battery to do much more than just lurk in comments sections, and sometimes not even that (autistic burnout is not fun, can confirm, 0/10, do not recommend).
But I'm back, and here's hoping 2024 is a good year, and one that's productive where writing is concerned! 2023 was a pretty good year for me; I published my first fic (which was also the first bit of writing I've properly published anywhere!), and I sent off my first query for ASR! To a proper literary agent! Like ... WHAT?! I still can't believe it!
As for the end of this year, let's get one last hurrah in for the year of 2023 with the final WIPsday of the year. Chapter 11 of Trails is coming, it just needs to be edited. Here's an unedited snippet of the chaos you have to look forward to.
“When I tell you to, run like fuck,” Fiona tells us, clicking the hammer back on her revolver.  “How many more rounds have you got?” Penny asks. “Enough to take down half the idiots aboard this ship.” Fiona takes up a position on one side of the hatch, her finger on the trigger guard. As she moves I hear the tell tale clink of a box of rounds, and see the outline of it in her trouser pocket for the first time. “Fiona,” I caution. “Maybe we should try to do this quietly.” “No chance of that, boyo. I’m killing as many of these fuckers as I can before we go overboard.” “Fiona,” I try again, but she isn’t listening. “The lifeboat is on the right side,” Penny whispers to us, eyeing Fiona out of the corner of her eye. We’ll lower you into it, Baz, then follow.” I guess I don’t have much of a say in this, as Snow is literally the only reason I’m still standing right now. I nod, and Penny creeps up the stairs behind Fiona, who does so about as well as a bull in a china shop. She storms out onto the deck and I’m actually surprised by how long it takes for bullets to start flying. There’s a solid fifteen seconds or so, which allows Bunce to make it up the stairs and gesture for us to follow, before an alarm is raised and Fiona does what she does best: cause chaos.
This hiatus with Trails wasn't planned, but work and general holiday madness got in the way of the tentative schedule my beta's and I had. New Year, fresh start, once more into the fray, as they say. I hope you can join us for this fics future shenanigans.

Day 25: Secret Santa
Hi hi! This one, again, would have made... so much more sense... had I published on Dec 25th 😂
Ship: Hangster (I'm in such a Hangster mood rn please disregard)
The original prompt:
Tumblr media
-
Maverick finished cutting and folding paper then tossed them into his helmet, opening the airstream door and calling out to the Daggers who were floating around the hangar. Hangman, Bob, Payback and Rooster were lying on Maverick’s couches in front of his TV, squabbling about a football game. Phoenix and Coyote were playing table tennis and Fanboy was on a running commentary, earning an eyeroll from the other two. Rooster glanced up from where he was sitting on the floor between Bob’s legs, an eyebrow raised.
“What’s up, Mav?”
“Come grab a piece of paper each; the name you draw is who you’re buying for this year’s Secret Santa.”
“Hangman if I draw your name know you’re not getting anything,” Phoenix said as she climbed over the back of the couch between Bob and Payback, the first one to grab a name from the hat... helmet.
“Please tell me that’s not the one you’re using at the moment,” Rooster complained to Maverick as he reached up to grab one himself.
“Okay, I won’t tell you that.”
“Phoenix if I get you, I’m getting you tickets to the next Longhorns game,” Hangman said as he accidentally tripped over Rooster who was back on the floor after grabbing his paper.
“Getting yourself tickets to the next Longhorns game,” Bob muttered. Hangman smirked.
“Why not, right?”
“Just when I thought you’d changed, Bagman,” Phoenix sighed as she flopped into a spot on the couch. Once everyone had their piece of paper Maverick shooed them off to go back to causing chaos in the rest of the hangar. With everyone else distracted, Rooster opened his paper for a second time and winced. He stood, touching Maverick’s arm in passing.
“Hey, I forgot; I have PT first thing tomorrow morning. I’m gonna head back now and get some sleep beforehand. It’s been great out here this week, thanks Mav.”
Maverick regarded him for a moment, then smiled at him.
“Back still giving you trouble?”
“It never got better after I ejected, but PT helps.”
“That’s good, kid. Keep up with it. Let me know when you get home, yeah?”
“Gotcha.”
Maverick gave him a quick hug and Rooster went over to the rest of the Daggers to let them know he was heading out, earning a groan from Phoenix and a look from Hangman. If anyone could tell he was bullshitting, it was probably those two.
“You good, man?” Coyote asked. He was also so very perceptive when it came to bullshit.
“Fine, it’s just- y’know, I don’t really want to miss PT if it’s the only thing that helps my back, especially because I can’t do my usual gym routine at the moment.”
“Ah, gotcha. Okay man, we’ll probably see you later, we’re all thinking of going out for dinner sometime next week if you’re down?”
“Only if you’re paying, Javy,” Rooster grinned. The two bumped shoulders in good jest then Phoenix gave him a hug.
“Call me if you want to talk about it,” she said subtly as she pulled away.
“Thanks, Tash.”
With that he waved goodbye to the others and got into the Bronco, starting the engine and letting it warm up whilst he connected his phone to the new Bluetooth system he’d managed to connect about a month ago. He took a deep breath, glancing toward the others who were still having fun in the hangar and wondered if they’d figured out what was going on.
-
“That was weird, right?”
Phoenix hummed when Hangman appeared at her side, lining up her next shot on the pool table.
“You and I both know he freezes like that for no reason sometimes. He’d say something if it was serious-“
“-Trace.”
Hangman sent her a look and Phoenix cleared her throat.
“You’re right, that’s wishful thinking. We both know he doesn’t have PT for another week so what made him run for the hills?”
“The threat of commitment?” Hangman suggested, earning a pool cue to the gut. She continued to be a good shot, apparently. The pair glanced up when the airstream door opened and Maverick quietly slipped inside. They exchanged a look, and Phoenix reached for her phone.
“I don’t think they had a fight, we would’ve heard it, but I’m just gonna make sure he’s okay,” she muttered as she typed out a text. Hangman hummed.
“I’ll go see if I can get it out of Mav. He doesn’t go quiet unless it’s to do with a Bradshaw.”
“Don’t do anything stupid,” Phoenix pleaded. She went back to her pool game and Hangman approached Coyote and Bob.
“Hey, did either of you see when Mav’s mood changed?”
“As far as I’m aware it didn’t-“
“-when we all checked who we had for Secret Santa.”
Coyote was quick to dismiss it but Bob’s wallflower personality had the gossip Hangman needed. He was quick to ruffle Bob’s perfectly styled hair, glancing over his shoulder.
“Hey Phoenix, I got it!”
-
Phoenix: did you fight with Mav? (sent: 1:32pm)
Rooster: no? (sent: 6:30pm)
Rooster: what would make you think that? (sent: 6:31pm)
Phoenix: you pretty much ran out of the hangar and you’re not a runner anymore (sent: 6:32pm)
Rooster: look (sent: 6:35pm)
Rooster: it’s nothing (sent: 6:35pm)
Phoenix: you drove the 4 hours back to San Diego for no reason (sent: 6:40pm)
Rooster: do we really have to do this? I have PT (sent: 6:45pm)
Phoenix: bullshit (sent: 6:46pm)
Phoenix: if it’s not a big deal you would have already dealt with it (sent: 6:47pm)
Rooster: seriously Tash it’s nothing (sent: 6:48pm)
Phoenix: fine (sent: 7pm)
Phoenix: but I’m here if you want to get it off your chest (sent: 7:01pm)
Rooster: I know (sent: 7:02pm)
Rooster: but thanks (sent: 7:03pm)
Phoenix: I got your back (sent: 7:04pm)
-
Hangman had let Maverick go for the rest of the afternoon and into the evening, but after dinner and a couple beers he sidled over and flopped onto the couch beside him.
“So; you and Roos have a fight?”
“No...?”
“Just checkin’, he left like his tail was on fire.”
“He’s your boyfriend isn’t he?” Maverick replied, an eyebrow raised. Hangman cleared his throat.
“Don’t change the subject, sir. Something changed when we did the Secret Santa draw; is everything okay?”
“You don’t give up, do you?” Maverick sighed, “but fine, as long as you don’t tell him.”
He reached into his pocket, offering the piece of paper he’d drawn last. Hangman opened it and whistled.
“You got something in mind?”
“Maybe. It’s... I dunno, it’s probably stupid, but-“
“-it won’t be stupid, and you’re not gonna piss him off. He’s come a long way since the Dagger mission, Mav, don’t worry about that.”
Maverick hummed, but his gaze remained on his lap. Hangman gently bumped his shoulder.
“If it helps, I’ll go and check on him tomorrow. I was thinking of heading back anyway, leave isn’t super long this time and I have to do a couple things before they torture me on base.”
That earned a chuckle and Hangman took it as a win.
-
Rooster wasn’t entirely surprised to find Hangman in his kitchen when he came back from his morning run, making what looked like coffee and breakfast. They shared a gentle kiss against the counter, Hangman offering the cup of liquid gold he was drinking to his partner.
“You want to tell me what’s going on?” He started. Rooster shook his head.
“I need a shower first.”
Hangman frowned but he slowly nodded.
“Okay; go shower and then we’re going to talk. No slipping out a window, yeah? We’re too old for that shit.”
Rooster snorted, pressing a kiss to his lips before heading upstairs. Hangman sighed.
Hangman: he’s being cagey (sent: 8:45am)
Phoenix: duh (sent: 8:46am)
When Rooster returned, freshly showered and ready for the day, he took the plate offered and the couple went to the dining table. Whilst they ate they made light conversation, planning out what they wanted to do over the next couple of days other than a date night and making out on Rooster’s couch. Their plates quickly became empty and Hangman took Rooster by the hand.
“Babe,” he started softly, “tell me what’s going on in your head.”
Despite popular belief, Hangman wasn’t a pet names guy, he leaned more toward nicknames and variations of callsigns; the way he said babe told Rooster he was serious. Rooster’s gaze fell to the dining table, spotting various stains on the tabletop.
“It’s dumb,” he muttered. Hangman squeezed his hand.
“Probably, but I want to hear it anyway.”
“I got Mav for the Secret Santa. I knew there was a chance, I just didn’t think it would happen. There’s six other names I could have drawn, y’know?”
“That makes sense. You worried about it not being good enough for him?”
“It’s our first Christmas after coming back together; I think I broke his heart last year when I told him you and me were going to Australia for Christmas so I wouldn’t be around. I just want it to mean something.”
Hangman’s brows furrowed.
“I didn’t know he’d offered to have you last Christmas, but it makes sense now. You were unhinged in Australia, honey.”
Rooster snorted. When Hangman stood to approach him he instinctively opened his arms to let him into his space.
“Look, there’s a couple things you need to remember; one, I love you. Two, Mav adores you. Three, you could give him a plain white mug and he’d still treasure it because it came from you, B. He doesn’t care about what he gets, just that you’re there.”
Rooster hummed.
“You know this is why I keep you around, right?”
“Oh; so it’s not the great sex?”
“That too.”
-
Christmas Day rolled around and the Daggers plus Penny and Amelia gathered at the hangar, sharing a meal and playing football on the tarmac. Amelia had quickly integrated herself into the group of adults around her; as much as Penny was a great mom Amelia found that she also liked talking to Phoenix, a great role model for younger girls like her. Penny and Maverick sat back to watch them hand in hand, exchanging a fond look when Bob tackled Payback and everyone cheered for him.
“He’s come a long way,” Penny said. Maverick hummed.
“It shows in the air, too. He’s always had confidence in the air but it’s only grown-“
“-oh, no, I was talking about Rooster.”
Maverick’s gaze tracked around the group, finding his godson with his boyfriend. Amelia approached them and Rooster smiled at her, leaving Hangman’s side to listen to what she had to say.
“I’d say he’s finally found peace,” Maverick agreed. Penny squeezed his hand.
“Have you?”
“Who knows.”
Amelia came running to the two adults, tugging at Maverick’s hand.
“C’mon, Rooster wants to do Secret Santa.”
“Oh, does he?” Penny teased, exchanging a look with her partner. Maverick hefted himself out of his seat.
“We better not keep him waiting. Go round up the others, Amelia.”
She took off to the others, yelling for them. Penny bumped Maverick’s shoulder.
“Do you want to tell me why you’ve been so cagey lately?”
“Me? Cagey? Just trying not to get myself sent to another foreign country, Penny,” he replied. She gave him the look, the same one he’d just seen Hangman give Rooster, and winced.
“I got Rooster for Secret Santa and I’m a little worried about what I got him.”
“You’re worried he’s going to throw another temper tantrum? I really don’t think he’s got it in him anymore, honey.”
“I know... I think. I don’t want to risk it.”
“Okay, well, Hangman’s here, Phoenix is here, I’m here. We’re not going to let him ruin Christmas if that what he feels he needs to do.”
Penny squeezed his hand and they went to join the others who had gathered around the Christmas tree toward the back of the hangar.
-
“Phoenix.”
“Thanks, Amelia.”
Phoenix took the wrapped present from the younger girl, watching her hand the rest of them around. Rooster’s came as a wrapped large box, whilst Maverick’s was flatter but more rectangular. The others tore into theirs but it took a minute for Rooster and Maverick to pull off the paper. Rooster was the first to pop open his box and he immediately tossed the box on to Hangman’s lap to give Maverick a hug.
“I didn’t know you kept it,” he muttered. Maverick breathed a sigh.
“I found it last week, thought you might want it back.”
“What is it?” Phoenix asked Hangman, who reached into the box and produced a tiny airplane toy. When Rooster returned to his side he took the toy back, keeping it close to him. Hangman frowned but chose not to question it at that moment, instead flipping open the envelope he’d been handed.
“Oh, would you look at that! Longhorns tickets. I wonder who did that?” He said in a way that told everyone exactly what had happened.
“How the fuck did you draw yourself?” Bob groaned at the same time the others laughed. Hangman smirked.
“I’m just that good, Baby on board. I’m so good, in fact, that Rooster-“
“-open yours, Mav, before I have to cover Amelia’s ears,” Phoenix pleaded. Maverick gently opened the box and his eyes softened.
“All these years I thought I’d lost it. Where did you find it?”
At first the team assumed he was talking to Penny, but Rooster was the one to speak up.
“A couple weeks ago, I was cleaning out the Bronco and I found it wedged in a really weird spot. Never noticed it before, thought you might want it back.
“Guys, being mysterious is fun when you’re not pushing sixty,” Amelia groaned. Penny gently swatted her arm whilst the others laughed. Maverick rolled his eyes, holding up what looked like a keyring that had seen better days.
“I bought this when Bradley was born. I don’t believe in luck but this thing went everywhere with me and it kept me safe. The one time I didn’t have it, well... we lost Goose that day and I searched for it every day after. I had no idea it was in that damn truck of his.”
The others went quiet, Hangman reaching subtly for Rooster’s hand between them. Finally, Rooster cleared his throat.
“You never told me that.”
“I know, kid.”
“Is that Tasmania?” Phoenix blurted, standing from her seat and gesturing vaguely toward the desert outside the hangar doors.
“What does that even- oh. Yeah, goddamn, that looks like it! C’mon guys.”
Hangman followed along, gesturing with a (not) subtle head tilt toward the hangar doors. Everyone but Maverick and Rooster made a swift exit, giving them a moment to themselves.
“I’m really glad you could be here this year, Bradley. I’m not upset about Australia, you do know that right?”
“It’s good to hear it,” Rooster confessed. Maverick hummed.
“Let’s start fresh in the new year, huh? Stop running and try talking?”
“Sounds like a plan.”
They shared a look, then laughed.
“I can’t believe you still had it,” Rooster muttered.
“Always. Thought you might want it back, give it to your kids some day.”
-
“This is a real cockblock, Roos. I’m trying to get laid and you’re staring at that toy?”
“Shush, Jake.”
Rooster lifted the toy to the tent light, showing a crack in one of the wings. Hangman huffed, making himself comfortable against Rooster’s shoulder and sending him a look.
“Why are you so hooked on that toy?”
“My mom said it was the last thing I got from my dad. We went to see him and Mav at TOPGUN and it was only a couple days later that he...”
Rooster cleared his throat.
“You know the story.”
“Wow... what’s the crack in the wing from?”
“I cried for, like, three hours. I was playing with it in the park and some older kid took it, stepped on it, then called me a baby. I was six. It took Mav and mom about an hour to fix it, but when they went to give it back to me I was hiding under Mav’s leather jacket and sobbing. Apparently the crying stopped the second I had it back.”
Hangman laughed, reaching up to press a kiss to his lips.
“That’s adorable; I’ll be telling Phoenix that one later.”
Rooster hummed, finally tucking the toy into his backpack and using his body weight to flip them.
“Sorry, you said something about getting laid?”
“Tell me more,” Hangman grinned.

I am just nosy, forgive me. Can you describe each one of your mutuals?
Buckle up people and prepare to get complimented >:3c
First and foremost, they’re all absolute sweethearts to me.
There are my irl friends, such as @wretchedshade, @granolabird, @siriuscitrus and @scales-of-stardust or beta as I usually refer to them. I share the same braincell with these people.
Wretchedshade has been my best friend since we were ten, we’ve been there for each other for 11 years. I initially got her into anime, and then she got me into jojo, and every once in a while we cry about Doukyuusei again. She’s a great artist and is really good at writing sad shit, which is why I write sad shit; to have the glory of finally making her cry. She kicked cancer’s teeth in a few months ago so it’s about goddamn time something good come her way and I WILL fight someone on that.
Granolabird is the dm for my dnd campaign, and like I said, absolute sweetheart, chaotic adhd haver (actually like most of my friend group is like this lmao we’re all queer and neurodivergent). Either way, we used to share thoughts on each other’s original stories, and we still do sometimes but it’s mostly just sending each other tiktoks/reels like “this you” or “this your oc.”
Siriuscitrus is usually pretty hyper, but also tries to be v considerate of everyone’s feelings. If you said that the McDonald’s employee put pickles on your burger when you said no, they’d probably be the one to tell them. They’re also scarily good at vibechecking people and told me I give “future he/they vibes” and like a week later I said “fuck you’re right oh my god.”
You’ve probably seen me and beta’s interactions on here or in the ao3 comments. We enjoy our like playful rivalry/enemyship. I like to torment tease her and she usually gets me back pretty good, it’s all in good fun. It’s also really funny to me whenever we meet up, I tell myself “you are friends with them for reasons other than fic so do not make it about fic” and then we’ll spend literally hours talking about and brainstorming fic ideas. It just Happens.
I’m also gonna add @memory-mortis into here because while we’ve not met irl I’ve introduced him to my friend group. Yet another sweetheart, love her art style a lot, and she was one of the first comments I got on ginkgo trees to motivate me to keep going. I was kinda worried about bringing him into my friendgroup because like if I’m not overthinking I am not thinking At All. I was super relieved and happy that she like IMMEDIATELY fit in with everyone so :D
For some of my other close but only on tumblr/ao3/outside my general friendgroup mutuals! (There are too many so I’m sorry if you’re not here it’s mostly people I interact with more regularly ;-;)
@crimson-ashes who I have occasionally with absolute love called my “askbox gremlin” because they live in my inbox. I need to stress this is affectionate because genuinely, I love opening tumblr and seeing I’ve got asks from them. They gotta stop posting Astarion though because I’m feeling So Tempted to play BG but I know my laptop would kill itself (joking).
@crystalflygeo and I know I’ve called everyone sweethearts but genuinely, she’s probably one of the sweetest people I’ve had the pleasure of talking to. She’s really wholesome (unlike her writing which is never gonna be a complaint in my book, good soup) and super supportive of other people.
@madamemachikonew who’s super polite and really kind. She’s also really creative/smart when it comes to referencing real world art and philosophy in her writing and integrating it into her own worldbuilding. I would have never thought to have done that, and it makes her writing very unique!
We don’t interact as much but @probably-doesnt-exist, @ethve, @euniveve and @ainescribe are such talented artists and super sweet, have literally made me screech and cackle with utter joy whenever they draw the characters from ginkgo trees. I rotate through which art becomes my phone’s lock/home screens.
This is long af but fuck it, I wanna brighten people’s days and I told myself to say “I love you” to my friends and family more, so consider this one big “I love you!” to y’all. It’s a pleasure talking to y’all!

could you please explain kissin time and perhaps drop some lines of it as well plz? first time of Paul and Gene? oooh~
Kissin' Time is the friends to lovers/first time story of Paul and Gene. I initially wasn't going to write one because there were so many good first time stories on AO3, but when the inspiration hit it was irresistible. Here is the moment of realisation for Gene:
Paul scowled at his reflection in the mirror and wiped the makeup away.  He had lost count of how many times he had tried.  But stars were one of the hardest shapes to draw and make even, and it was only harder when he was trying to draw it on his own face.
But eventually he got it right.  He spun around in his chair and faced his band mates.  “How’s that?” he asked.
Gene looked up.  And his eyes widened in amazement.  Although the makeup covered Paul’s face, it still somehow managed to emphasize his features.  His large, dark, expressive eyes, his full, sensual lips, his delicate jawline and high cheekbones.  How had Gene never noticed before?  Paul, his best friend, was beautiful.
But all he said was, “Looks good.  What about the other eye?”
Paul looked away and shrugged.  He really didn’t want to do all that again.  “Nah, I’m too lazy,” he said, and almost without realizing it smoothed his hair down over his ear.  The other guys could have symmetrical makeup because their faces were symmetrical.  But his wasn’t.
Something had happened.  Something was different.  It became apparent during the show that night.  Paul was much more confident, more animated on stage.  Pouting, shaking his hair and his shoulders, prancing across the stage like a tiger.   Four years Gene had known him and had never seen this side of him before.  He had to admit he had been apprehensive about Paul being their front man.  He was, after all, the quietest, the shyest member of KISS.  But that star on his face had changed him somehow.  He was like a caterpillar turning into a butterfly.
Once the makeup was off and they were walking down the street he slipped back into the caterpillar.  As they passed the usual group of guys who whistled and called out to Paul, he stepped closer to Gene, so close that Gene could feel the warmth from his body, and their shoulders brushed together.
The previous year, after Wicked Lester had ended, Gene had gone hitchhiking upstate to find a new guitarist and, not wanting to be left behind, Paul had insisted on going with him.  There had been one group of guys they got a ride with that Paul had been scared of.  Gene, who had quietly been looking out for his younger friend since they first met, reassured him that he wouldn’t let anyone hurt him, and since that day Paul had looked to him for protection.  Gene thought it was like having a little brother to watch out for, but sometimes it was like having an annoying, clingy little brother.  After all, Paul was 21 now, 6 foot and quite powerfully built.  Gene was certain he could take care of himself.  And whether they were passing the guys who thought they were tough and shouted things like “We’ll kill you queers,” (always from a distance though) or the guys who whistled and shouted, “looking good baby,” Gene would sometimes say to Paul after, “Of course they think we’re gay with you leaning on me like that.”
Today it didn’t bother him.  Gene had to fight back the urge to put a protective arm about his friend.  Once they had passed the crowd, Gene did rest his hand on Paul’s back and whispered, “You okay?”
Paul looked up at him and nodded.  “Yeah,” he said with a small smile.
Gene could see why the guys whistled.  Those eyes.  So easy to get lost in.  They were intense, like Paul was trying to tell him something he didn’t have the words for.  And those lips.  Gene wondered if they were as soft as they looked.  What would they be like to kiss?
FUCK!  Simmons, pull yourself together! thought Gene.  He’s your best friend, your brother.  He doesn’t have tits!  He has more hair on his chest than you do!

SO FAR AWAY, COME HOME — feb, 2024
monique gasped when she saw her phone light up, immediately dropping the pencil on her desk and running to her phone, cheering when she saw her beloved on the screen.
“moni-unnie, we just started!” leihua whined, frowning when saw monique’s drawing barely started. “why does this man find it acceptable to steal her away from me…”
monique ignored her youngest, immediately answering the phone and exiting the room, leaning against the hallway for support. “hi there!” monique whispered, giggling slightly.
“hey there, baby.” monique couldn’t help but blush when her boyfriend of almost five years responded, with his voice all deep and raspy, “i just woke up…but i’m sure it’s around midday for you right now.”
“it is…leihua and i just finished eating lunch and now she has me drawing with her, she tried to hide my phone from me because i was waiting for you to call me…i couldn’t stop checking my phone!”
“i’m sorry i didn’t call sooner,” he said, frowning. “i’m having a really good time seeing all these new things…but it’s tiring at the same time. i wish you were here with me…in my arms.” he said, lowering his voice to say the next part, “i miss feeling your body against mine…getting to feel your curves whenever i wanted.”
monique took a shaky breath, pressing her hands against her mouth to prevent herself from whining. “i miss that too, love. my beds so cold without you.”
“when i get back home im going to never let go of you, not even to let you pee. i’m gluing myself to you.” he joked, knowing that monique was about to become really sad. “i know it’s hard that im so far away, but it’ll be okay. we’ll be okay. just like we always are.” he reassured the girl, fidgeting with the ring monique purchased for him before he left. “you doing okay?”
monique cleared her throat, quickly wiping her tears off her cheeks. “i’m doing alright…i’m happy you are having fun. the girls are keeping me busy…i never hear the end of it from sooyoung about jeno and this girl he is seeing…apparently she’s going to join nct and jeno can’t decide if he wants her or if he hates her…you know, typical jeno things.” monique laughed, “sometimes i wonder why they can’t just confess their feelings for eachother and get it over with, but then i remember how we were…” monique scoffs.
“yeah, you always ran away when you saw me in the same room…i couldn’t say hi to you without your cheeks turning bright red…” he laughs, “now you can’t keep your hands off of me.”
“hey, that’s not true! it’s you that has no self control!” monique argues, tsking into the phone. “i remember your members telling me i was the only one who could get you to stop playing your games to join in on the fun…they always acted like you were some shy, innocent guy…now im dating a menace!”
“i’m not a menace! just a man who loves his girl!”
the couple sit on the phone in comfortable silence for awhile, listening to each other breathe. monique closed her eyes and imagined her man laying next to her, being wrapped up in his warm, bulky arms. she imagines his glasses, how she always had to push them back up his nose in the mornings, or how she has to tilt them back from them going crooked. she thinks about his smile, his deep voice, everything that drives her insane.
he was her man, her boy, forever and always. she couldn’t wait to see him again…but she knew she would see him soon enough. and she’ll be okay, because she knows he will always love her…no matter what.
“i love you, !!!!!!.”
“i love you most, moni.”

That's so sweet of you to even reply! Um now that you've put me on the spot 😂..honestly I'm a bit clueless 😅. I'm not very imaginative. I just really enjoy reading zowens and so far the few I've read from a couple of you guys have been reallyy good reads!
All I know is that may be something where it's mutual pining and Sami's lost all hope but it's actually not unrequited?? May be a bit of possessive Kevin thrown in? Idk 😭 is what I just said even classified as a prompt??
PS. I know you said you haven't watched wrestling in a while but did you happen to catch the zowens moments at wrestlemania at all! ? 😍😁
Hi!!
So, first of all, great prompt, fits them fantastic, loved it. I just ended up overdoing it by a little, I think, so now it's not really a prompt fill anymore, but a whole fic 😂 really didn't expect that because writing has been Hard lately, so thank you for that!!
Here's the AO3 link, but I'll include the text here too.
PS. I have mainly seen the gifsets of them, but they are!!! so!!!! I love them ♥
There is a brand-new, shining belt in his hands and Sami is aware that this should be the happiest moment in his life. It isn’t. He looks down at the silver plates, the leather strap, heavy and solid and everything he worked for, and he’s happy, of course, but in the back of his mind, he knows that it doesn’t compare to - Well. No matter. Some things you cannot have; Sami has learnt that years and years ago.
Kevin’s face is shining with joy about the match he won and the beers he has had to celebrate it, and Sami’s heart aches at the sight, fierce and wild and beautiful. “The next time”, Kevin mutters into the too-short distance between them, and when Kevin takes another deep swig of his drink, Sami knows that he will have forgotten the words the next morning, “the next time, we’ll tag and we will take all of them out. Jus’ you and me, we’ll fuck them up and send them back crying to their mothers. An’ then we’ll do it again, and again, and again, until we’ll get a shot a’ the titles and then we’ll take ‘em too. An’ we’ll be unstoppable.”
He’s beaming and leaning in and Sami feels himself swaying closer, cannot stop himself. Kevin is magnetic, always has been, and Sami sometimes wonders how long he’ll be able to stop himself from giving in to his pull.
There is a knock on the door of his dressing room, which finally pulls him out of his reverie. Sami takes a moment to compose himself before he answers, wiping silly fantasies from his mind that he has known to be useless for most of his life now like he would wipe tears from his eyes. He’s used to both, after all. “Come in!”
The door swings open, and he shouldn’t, but Sami knows who is behind it before he sees Kevin standing there. “Shouldn’t you be celebrating?”, Kevin asks instead of a greeting, stepping into the room like he owns it. In some way, Sami guesses, he does. “What makes you think that’s not what I am doing?”, he asks back, getting up, because knowing Kevin, he’ll be pulled into a hug within the next thirty seconds. Knowing himself, he won’t ever be able to turn down a chance to be close to Kevin.
His words draw a laugh from Kevin’s lips that Sami treasures, and just like Sami knew he would, Kevin wraps his arms around him the second Sami has stood up. The edges of his belt presses into his stomach painfully, but that is a small price to pay for the comfort of Kevin’s thick, warm arms around him, the faint tickle of Kevin’s beard against Sami’s neck.
“To start with”, Kevin begins to answer while still pressed against Sami, only slowly pulling back, “because you are in here and not out there, where you should be. Also, because I have known you for more than half my life and this isn’t your celebratory face.”
“Sounds good”, he replies easily, then adds, “only that we’ll have to wait a bit longer with doing that, I’m booked to tag with Quicksilver the next show. But after that…” He doesn’t expect more than a scoff – Kevin isn’t that fond of Quicksilver, but then again, he isn’t fond of a lot of people – but instead, Kevin’s face darkens, his brows furrowing and his eyes suddenly glistening in the dim light of the bar. It’s a look Sami half-recognises from the ring, because the intensity is almost the same, but there is something else mixed into it. Something dark, something dangerous, something alluring.
He’s right, of course he is, but Sami still tries for a few moments to come up with an excuse, before he finally nods. It wouldn’t make a difference, saying anything else, when Kevin knows him so well. “It’s nothing”, he adds, because he can see Kevin starting to worry within half a second. “Just a bit of nostalgia. Reminiscing about the old days, you know the drill.” “How old?”, Kevin asks and, thank God, the smile is back in his voice and his eyes and Sami wants to luxuriate in it, wants to stay here forever. In any moment with Kevin, really.
“Ring of Honor old”, he replies with a wry smile, because it almost feels like a confession; to be here, at the pinnacle of his career, and thinking about being young and dumb and so, so hopeful. Again, it makes Kevin laugh, makes him clasp a hand on the side of Sami’s shoulder; a point of contact that is so warm it would be enough to sustain him through a winter. “That is old.” “I know.” “Anything special? Or just the general beauty of horrible hotels, being sixty percent bruises and having to put me in bed after I drank my weight in shitty lager?”
There is something about old wounds, the way their pain becomes familiar, almost an old friend. Sami’s lips tingle, remembering, his heart aches, dull and yet fierce, but he smiles nonetheless, too used to the pain for it to feel disruptive.
“All of the above, I’d say.”
“Quicksilver?”, Kevin repeats, and even his voice is different, rough and full of something that Sami doesn’t understand, yet desperately wants to. “Yes. You know, silver and blue mask, used to hang around with Scorpio Sky?” “I know who he is”, Kevin replies, but his voice hasn’t changed. Maybe Sami missed a fight between them in the past? “Why are you tagging with him?”
Sami self-consciously pushes a hand through his hair; it’s becoming too long again. “Well, he asked and I didn’t see anything wrong with giving it a shot. He seems like a-” “You shouldn’t tag with anyone but me”, Kevin interrupts him, and suddenly Sami does recognise what is dripping from every word he speaks: hunger. “Fuck Quicksilver. Fuck all of them. They don’t have what we have. They never will.”
“Doesn’t sound very celebratory”, Kevin states, but there is humour in his voice. “How about tomorrow, after I win the United States Championship, we’ll do it properly? I don’t think I’ll be able to give you the customary three dozen bruises until then, but if you really miss it so much, I am sure we can find some terrible highway motel we can crash in. And as long as it’s better beer, I don’t mind drinking too much of it.”
It’s a joke, of course it is, and a sweet half-serious offer to relive a bit of a time Sami misses dearly on occasion, and yet it’s suddenly too much. Because he has a title in his hands, because out there, there are thousands who cheered for him, and yet, it isn’t the happiest moment in his life, not by far.
The familiar ache in his chest breaks open like the earth cracking in half to spew fire, and Sami knows that he cannot keep the pain from his face even before Kevin reacts. But react he does, worry suddenly clouding his gaze, the hand he still has on Sami’s shoulder gripping harder.
“Sami?”, he asks, and his voice is too much, his gaze, his concern, his friendship that has never been all Sami wanted. “Are you alright? Should I get a doctor?”
“I’m okay”, Sami manages to force out, but he doesn’t sound it, not even to himself. “Just. Don’t say that, Kevin. Not with the… the shitty hotels and the drinking.” It takes a moment to get a reaction, which Sami understands; he isn’t making sense, after all. But then, all of a sudden, Kevin’s expression crumples, his shoulders drop like a burden, half-forgotten, has been forced upon them once more.
“I’m sorry”, he mutters, fingers tightening reflexively around Sami’s shoulder before they fall away. “I never… the last time, when I got so drunk you had to take me to my room, you never told me what happened, even if I have an inkling… I don’t think I ever had the guts to say it, but I’m sorry. For whatever it is I did.”
“Kevin”, he breathes out, unsure, because surely this cannot be happening. Sami has been aware of his own feelings for years, but there is no way they could be requited. And yet, there is a glint in Kevin’s eyes that looks like yearning; and yet, Sami’s heart picks up its pace, spelling out in morse code: pleasepleasepleaseplease.
A moment of silence stretches between them, thick and viscous, then Kevin knocks back the rest of his beer, before crushing the can and dropping it on the floor. “Fuck it”, he mutters, and Sami wants to ask what he means, but before he can get the words out, Kevin reaches out, one hand on Sami’s hip, one on the side of his neck, and pulls him in. He tastes of gas station beer and stale chips and almost ten years of quiet, desperate, hopeless longing, and even before he manages to kiss back, Sami knows that this is the happiest he ever will be.
“What?”
Kevin isn’t looking at him anymore, but there is so much pain written in clear, horrible letters across his face that it washes away the ache in Sami’s chest; how could it matter, when Kevin is hurting right in front of him?
A wry laugh escapes Kevin’s lips, which might be the worst sound Sami has ever heard, but then he speaks, still not looking at Sami, and makes it worse. “I’m sure you remember it as well as I do, that one night when we were still in ROH. Before you started tagging with Quicksilver. When Chuck, I think, got all that horrible beer from the gas station around the corner and I just didn’t know when to stop. I never had the guts to ask what happened either, but you were so different afterwards, didn’t want to be touched, to be alone with me… and the scribbling on my arm… tell me if I’m wrong, but after some time I figured that I probably, you know. Kissed you. Which I shouldn’t have, of course. Against your will. So, don’t worry, I won’t do that again. Ever.”
“Did you sleep well?”, Sami asks the next morning when Kevin opens the door of his hotel room, looking dishevelled and hungover and utterly beautiful. For once, they had splurged on two hotel rooms instead of sharing one, and while Sami wishes he could have woken up next to Kevin, maybe even wrapped up in his arms, this, too, is wonderful.
He hands Kevin one of the coffees he picked up at a nearby café, idly wondering if this could become his thing now, treating his… his Kevin to coffee in the morning. After all, he usually is up far earlier than the other.
“Ugh”, Kevin replies, taking a gulp of coffee before even trying to form words, and it might be the most enchanting sound Sami has ever heard. “Think so. Can’t remember much. About sleeping or last night. Did you get into a fight, by the way?”
“What? No, no fights”, Sami replies distractedly, wondering if that means Kevin doesn’t remember their kiss, wondering if that means they will get to have two first kisses. Almost smiles at how much he will get to tease Kevin about it if he really has forgotten. All but plans to start the story of how they got together with this from now on: you know, I was in love with Kevin for almost a decade and he kisses me and then immediately forgets about it! Can you believe that?
“You sure?”, Kevin asks again between sips of coffee. “I know my handwriting is awful and drunk it’s even worse, and the letters are really smudged, but I wrote Don’t fuck with Sami on my arm last night.”
It takes a moment to sink in through the layers of happiness and imagined mornings and afternoons and evenings together, but eventually, Sami learns what it feels like to have the world end while not making a sound.
Sami recognises the pain on Kevin’s face; it’s the twin of his own, the one that has been with him for so long that it has found its permanent home at the bottom of his heart, with him in every moment he spends with Kevin, every one they are apart. It’s old and it’s weary and it’s familiar, and Sami should hate it, but.
But if his heart houses the other half of it, then that has to mean something.
And then Kevin says kissed, and for a moment, Sami thinks that he remembers, before realising that, no, he doesn’t, and somehow that is worse.
“You did”, he answers, and finally, Kevin looks at him again. His eyes are wide and terrified and still beautiful, and Sami hasn’t allowed himself to think it for a decade at least, but he loves him so much it is tearing him apart. “You kissed me that night. And then you didn’t remember it the next day, only had that writing on your arm and I thought you were trying to warn yourself not to do it again. But. Kevin. I kissed back.”
Kevin stumbles into his room, his lips still tingling with the last kiss Sami pressed onto them before closing the door behind him. Smiling so brightly Kevin thought he would burn up just looking at him, so happily that Kevin wanted to burn. Sami. The name alone is enough to make something within Kevin break open and pour out six or seven or eight years of pure love into the space between his ribs. He can’t explain why he had the courage to kiss Sami tonight, when he had sworn to himself he never would again and again and again, but now, knowing how Sami’s lips feel against his, how his hair feels between his fingers, his body pressed against Kevin’s, he thanks every divine entity he might believe in or not that he did.
Sami.
The alcohol is making his movements sluggish and sloppy, but Kevin manages to find a pen at the bottom of his backpack anyway, stored away for – maybe, hopefully – signing autographs after the show. He didn’t, but not even that matters anymore, because he needs it now for something much more important.
Don’t forget kiss with Sami, he writes on his arm, letters sloping and curling into each other, a smudge across half of it.
Not that he thinks there is much risk of doing so. After all, hadn’t Sami kissing him back been the happiest moment of his life?
There is no answer for several seconds, Kevin just staring at him like he has changed his life and hung the stars and the moon and the sun itself, and Sami is stuck in place until he isn’t anymore. Because the first time, years and years ago, Kevin had been brave enough to take the first step, and afterwards, Sami hadn’t dared to do the same. But maybe now is the time to return the favour.
Trembling, he picks up Kevin’s hands, which are warm and familiar, have caused as much hurt as they have healed, and puts them on his own body: one on his hip, the other on the side of his neck. And he steps closer, until he’s so close he can read the hopeful disbelief in Kevin’s eyes, can feel that the other’s breath has stopped.
“It was just like this”, Sami explains, and Kevin’s gaze drops to his lips, shoots up again as if he has to make sure that Sami wants this. “You didn’t want me to tag with Quicksilver. Or anyone else. You said that they could never have what we have, and you were right, and then you pulled me in and-”
Kevin kisses him.
He tastes like chewing gum and Red Bull and love, and Sami drinks him in until it feels like he is drowning, and even before he manages to kiss back, Sami knows that this, now truly, is the happiest he ever will be

You’d tried for another week to convince Chloe to spend some time with her father. It fell on deaf ears when you assured her that Vivian wasn’t going to be there. You tried telling her that you would go and she looked up at you almost like she was considering and then she shook her head.
“Not even if I’m there with you?”
Chloe shook her head without looking up. “Daddy makes you sad.”
You paused. You don’t know what you did right to ever deserve a daughter like Chloe. Sometimes it was hard to believe she was five. “Not anymore.”
Chloe looked up.
“I haven’t been sad recently, right?” You asked her, and she nodded so you continued. “Why don’t we try a lunch this weekend?”
Chloe looked like she was considering before she nodded. “Can Jay come?”
You smiled. “Why don’t you ask him?”
Of course, Jay came.
Jay slid into the seat next to Chloe, feeling considerably better now that his arm was finally out of the cast.
Caleb wasn’t happy about Jay’s presence but you’d told him he either accepted it or lunch was off. Those were Chloe’s terms.
That’s how Caleb found himself pausing at the entrance of the diner, watching from a distance as Jay gave Chloe his undivided attention, and Chloe smiled up at him before you leaned over to make Chloe take a sip from her drink. It was something about this image in front of him that hit him and he readjusted the expression on his face before he approached the table.
Chloe looked up, pausing before she looked back down at the paper she’d been drawing on.
Saying lunch was awkward was an understatement. Jay was kept occupied by Chloe, which was another way of saying that Chloe barely interacted with her father. The five-year-old aside, even Caleb seemed to have forgotten how to interact with his own daughter and you had absolutely nothing you wanted to say to Caleb except “what do you expect?” so you kept your mouth shut, reminding yourself of the promise you had made yourself when your marriage had fallen apart - to stay out of their father-daughter relationship.
At the end of lunch, Chloe was itching to get out of there, so Jay gave you a look but let Chloe drag him a little further down the street.
You glanced at Caleb. “You know this happened because your little girlfriend locked her outside right? You’re gonna have to win her trust back.”
Caleb glanced over towards Chloe and Jay, before he nodded. “Look, I’m sorry.”
You raised an eyebrow.
“For everything, Y/N. I… I saw the three of you today and I just… I get it. Jay seems like a good guy.” Caleb said.
That, you didn’t expect.
“I’ve been doing a lot of thinking and I was just worried about you.” Caleb said and you didn’t hide an eye-roll.
You held up a hand. “Caleb, I don’t need you to worry about me. You put me here, you don't get to worry about me. Don’t worry about me, don’t explain anything to me, it’s none of my business. The only reason I’m here today is because I’m not going to encourage my daughter to be estranged from her own father.”
You studied him. “Look, if you really want a relationship with her, you have to show her that you care. She’s five, she’s not stupid. We’ll try again this weekend, alright? I’ll call if Chloe’s up for it.”
You turned to head towards Jay and Chloe when she came out of nowhere, her hands pushing hard against your shoulders so you stumbled a few steps backwards. “So it was you.”
“What?” You asked, staring Vivian straight in the eye now.
“You seduced him so he’d break up with me.” The words coming out of Vivian’s mouth were scathing, and you stared at her, feeling the unbridled rage shoot through you once again and straight into your brain. Your body felt hot, the anger shooting to the forefront until you realized Chloe was running towards you now, with Jay close behind.
You swallowed down the anger, physically pursing your lips together to stop the choice words that were floating around in your brain to erupt in front of Chloe. Chloe scooted her way in between you and Vivian, before she pushed, her small hands barely reaching Vivian’s belly. “Leave my mum alone!” Chloe yelled, her voice echoing down the street as she glared up at Vivian.
“You okay?” Jay asked, a hand on your elbow now, his eyes flicking between you and Chloe.
You nodded, motioning towards Chloe, and Jay nodded before he reached over to pick Chloe into his arms and away from Vivian.
“Anyone can use that word but you.” You responded, your voice low. You turned back towards Caleb. “Your mess. We’re leaving.”
Jay took your hand with his free one, threading his fingers through yours before leading you and Chloe away, not even sparing a glance behind him.
Tumblr media
“Treatment 5.” Maggie said, handing you your iPad.
You nodded, smiling and opening the curtain. “Hi, I’m Dr Y/L/N, how can I…”
Your voice trailed off as you recognized the patient.
Vivian’s face changed as well and you exhaled. “I want another doctor.”
You nodded, your expression unchanging as you opened the curtain again . “Mags, is there anyone else who can…” Your eyes followed as Connor and Ethan rushed across the ED, Will was working on an emergency patient, and the waiting room looked like it was about to explode.
“Sorry.” Maggie shrugged and you sighed, shaking your head at her to tell her it was fine.
You left the curtain open and April followed you in, closing the curtain behind her. It had been barely a week since you’d last come face to face with her in a less than friendly situation, so in an ideal situation, you’d hand her off to someone else if you could. Instead, you glanced at the iPad. “It says here you injured your wrist?”
Vivian kept silent, before she turned towards April. “Can I get another doctor?”
April glanced at you and you just nodded. “Sorry, we’re really backed up today.”
“Let me order the tests and the scans.” You said, already looking at her swollen wrist. “When the results are back, I’ll try to get another doctor in here.”
Vivian gave you a scathing look, which was lost on you because you’d already looked away from her. You gave the instructions to April, who nodded at you and you left the room.
“What are the chances of someone else freeing up?” You asked Maggie, leaning over the counter.
Maggie glanced over at the waiting room and then back at you. “What’s the problem?”
“April’s probably going to come out of there with some complaint or other against me. You just wait.” You said. True enough, April came out of the treatment room a minute later.
“She’s claiming that she wants another doctor because you’re going to let your personal feelings get in the way. She said you didn’t even examine her hand and claims she had an altercation with you outside the hospital because you stole her boyfriend.”
Maggie turned to you.
“An alter…” You rolled your eyes. “Can you get Ethan to do it? She’ll complain about Will too, once she finds out who he is.”
“I’m waiting.” Maggie said, and you smiled.
“Oh, that’s the woman that my husband, sorry, ex-husband dumped me and Chloe for.” You explained, sweeping your hands out. “She crashed Chloe’s lunch with him last week and shoved me, claiming I seduced her boyfriend.”
“Seduced…?” April asked in disbelief.
You shrugged. “So Chloe ran in and pushed her back. She had an altercation with a five year old.”
“She didn’t…”
You smiled. “Not a chance. Besides, Jay was there.”
Maggie nodded towards the stretcher that was being pushed in. “I’ll handle this. You go help Dr Rhodes.”
“Thanks Mags!” You called, snapping on the gloves and heading there just in time to catch the tail-end of what the paramedics were telling Connor.
You followed him into Baghdad, stabilizing the patient as much as possible, before the tech wheeled the x-ray machine in.
“Clear.”
You glanced at the image that now flashed on the screen. “I’m putting in a chest tube.” You told Connor, who nodded as he moved to intubate the patient.
“Alright, call the OR, we’re sending her up now.”
You took off your gloves, stepping out of the room. “Jay?”
“Hey, how is he?” Jay asked. You could see the stress lines on his forehead.
You glanced back at the patient who was heading towards the lifts and shook your head. “He’s got serious injuries, it’s touch and go, but they’re sending him up for surgery now. You taking this case?”
Jay nodded. “High speed car chase.”
“He’s a perp?” You asked, although you kept your voice low.
Jay nodded.
“Great. What a great day.” You muttered.
Jay reached out. “What’s wrong?”
You gave him a fake smile. “You will never guess who was the patient I was seeing before this.”
Jay raised his eyebrows but before you could say more, Ethan came by. “Hey, Y/N. Maggie said you needed my help?”
You glanced down at your iPad. “Yeah, can you take the patient in 5? Vivian Hall.”
Jay’s head snapped towards you and you rolled your eyes at him. “It looks like just a broken wrist.” You told Ethan. “But if I go in there, she’s probably going to accuse me of trying to kill her. And if she hears the name Halstead, she might flip.”
“I got you.” Ethan assured you. “You wanna come in anyway?”
You shrugged. “Why not?”
You looked at Jay and he nodded. “Go, I’ll see you later.”
You reached over to squeeze his hand. “Get a coffee. And some food. I’m not asking.”
Jay smiled and nodded before you headed off after Ethan.
Tumblr media
You’d drawn up her discharge papers, handing them to April.
April shook her head. “Of all the hospitals?”
You gave her a small smile. “Come on, April, with my luck? I’m surprised she wasn’t in here sooner.”
You watched April disappear behind the curtain before the alarm rang from Treatment 5. “Dr Y/L/N!”
You were already halfway there by the time you heard April call you, pushing the curtain aside, your eyes sweeping across the monitor due to the change in her vitals. “She’s having a seizure. Push 5 of Ativan.”
“Meds are in.” April told you, looking up. “She was fine, she was about to get up.”
“She told Dr Choi she fell, didn’t she?” You asked.
April nodded.
“Get her up to CT. We need a brain scan.”
The CT scan had shown that Vivian had indeed taken an impact to her head and there were signs that she was bleeding into her brain so she’d been sent up for emergency surgery.
“Lucky for her you were available.” April commented.
You shrugged. “And that I’m a professional?” You asked, a smile playing on your lips.
April laughed. “Never doubted you for a second.”
“Hey, I heard about your patient.” Will said, jogging towards you. “Seriously?”
You smiled. “I mean, all I did was let Ethan do the talking and stop her seizure. Not sure if that qualifies her to be my patient since ‘I let my personal feelings get in the way’.” You made a face, drawing quotation marks in the air with your fingers.
Will laughed. “Yeah, I heard. Maggie asked me to check in on you.”
“I’m fine.” You told him. “More than fine, actually.”
Will nodded. “Good, now go kick my brother’s ass. I put him in the doctor’s lounge. Doesn’t look good.”
You frowned and turned towards the lounge.
Tumblr media
It had been that kind of week, made worse by being that kind of day.
Jay leaned against the back of the chair he was sitting on. He hadn’t been in here much, not really. He usually just breezed in and out of Med, stopping to say hi to his brother. Things had been different for the past year or so since he’d met you again at Med but most of that year had been spent with Jay trying to give you space.
He looked up at the ceiling, the car chase playing in his mind again.
Maybe if they hadn’t given chase, if they’d just let it play out, they wouldn’t have found the dead girl in his trunk. Jay glanced down at his phone. He was still waiting for the call from the coroner’s office on the cause of death for the body they’d found in the perp’s car. It could just as well have been the impact of the crash, and if they hadn’t been following so closely…
The thought was driven out when the door opened and Jay exhaled when he saw you standing there.
“Hey.” Jay whispered, smiling but you could tell the smile didn’t reach his eyes.
You smiled but didn’t say anything, heading towards him and reaching for his hand and putting your arms around him silently.
Jay lay his head against your middle as you stood against him, running your fingers through his hair.
Jay had rarely shown you this side of him when the both of you were alone, let alone anywhere near Chloe. You’d reminded him that he wasn’t the only person in this relationship, that it was only fair that he let you in after he'd practically barged his way into yours.
So now you just stayed with him, not bothered by the fact that you were in the doctor’s lounge and that anyone could walk in at any moment. You didn’t move until he did, and it was only because his phone rang.
You watched his features shift as he spoke, from dread, to understanding, to a little flash of annoyance and anger.
“Everything okay?” You asked.
Jay nodded. “They think the victim was already dead before the crash.” He said quietly.
You just gave him a sad smile. “I’m sorry, Jay. I know these cases are the hardest.”
Jay just nodded. “I gotta check on him. Are you off shift?”
“Yeah, I’m just going to grab my things and go home so Kate can go.” You said.
“Alright, don’t wait up.” Jay said, pressing a kiss to your cheek quickly. Jay all but spent eighty percent of his time at your apartment.
Before he could leave, you grabbed his wrist and Jay turned back to look at you. “I need to recharge too.” You said quietly, leaning in to press yourself against him, your arms looping around his waist.
You knew he was smiling as he pressed you even deeper into his embrace. “Okay, you can go now.” You announced, stepping back.
Jay let out a small chuckle, leaning in to press his lips lightly to yours. “Thanks, babe.”
You smiled as you watched him leave, glad at least you could be of some comfort to him as well.

A Dream Of You
Tumblr media
[ Photo by Jacob Rank on Unsplash ]
"Now remember when I told you that's the last you'll see of me Remember when I broke you down to tears I know I took the path that you would never want for me I gave you hell through all the years"
– I Bet My Life, Imagine Dragons
Four Years Ago, Ardenweald
The Veil that stood between Life and Death was still tenuous, then. No longer torn asunder but gossamer-thin in its renewal. Growing stronger. Healing. Soon enough, they said, few would be able to travel between the mortal realms and the Shadowlands.
Kyuusei didn’t care much about what they had to say.
The Dream remained as close to Ardenweald as a lover. And if she went to the cool depths of Tel’andu and slumbered, Kyuusei could walk those forests again in her waking dreams. See the twilight sky littered with stars strange to her, stretching above the canopy. Feel cool grasses beneath her feet.
Could walk with her again. With Delyra.
Sometimes, her love was a fox, lambent and shimmering in her soul’s shape. But on rare occasions, she walked in the form that Kyuu remembered. Slender like the willow, hair laden with midnight. Secrets in her smile. A form outlined in stars.
They talked of nothing most times. After the tears, and the confessions, and the forgiveness. The mending of what had been broken by fire, all those years ago.
But in this dream, Delyra was quiet. She walked silently on two legs next to Kyuusei, their hands entwined, Delyra’s feet leaving no trace in the soft grasses.
“We can’t do this much longer,” she finally said.
Kyuusei looked across. “I know what they said, but we’ll find a way. I’ll go deeper into the Dream. I can make it w-”
Delyra put a finger against Kyuu’s lips, the touch a spark against her skin.
“Shhh. Listen to me, Sei-sei. The Winter Queen’s preparing a gift for Tyrande, for all the kaldorei. A seed made from Elune’s tear. And she’s made an offer to all the souls that suffered. To be part of it, part of something that’ll grow and bring hope to the places it was lost.”
“But… that’s not where you died,” the one still living protested. “I - you died before all that, in the Firelands.”
“You think I didn’t suffer?” Delyra suppressed a quiet laugh. “Sei-sei, I was so angry. Angry at the Horde’s incursions, angry that Tyrande and Malfurion didn’t seem to be doing anything, angry at all of it, so much that I let myself fall under Fandral’s spell. Under his madness. But even in that madness, you were the one I sought out when they came to the Firelands. Beneath all of it, I knew what the Flame had made me. In the end, I realized how wrong I was.”
She looked upwards, midnight hair falling back as Delyra regarded the lights beyond Ardenweald’s canopy.
“When I woke up here, I suffered. Not just because of what I did but because I knew how much you’d suffer. How much you’d blame yourself, hate yourself.” Delyra's soul looked down again, her eyes finding Kyuusei. “And you, you silly thing, you wallowed in it for the longest time.”
Abashed, Kyuusei looked to the grasses at her feet. “I suppose I did.”
“You suppose? If you didn’t have a little bit of Ashamane watching over you, if you hadn’t had me watching over you, you probably would’ve ended up here yourself. And it’s Not. Your. Time.” Del smirked, drawing a finger beneath Kyuu’s chin. “Not yet. I have it on excellent authority.”
Kyuu grasped her lover's star-limned hand, a lopsided grin stealing across her face. “Are you keeping secrets from me, Del?””
“Spoilers, sweetie,” she drawled. “Let the dead keep their secrets. But listen to me. I want, I need you to promise me something.
“Dora dor. Just tell me what.”
“Always leaping in before you know where you’re landing." A soft smile eased Delyra's words. "I’m going to be part of this gift, this hope. And when the time comes, I want to know you’ll be there to guard and protect it. That you’ll watch over it, watch over me, like I’ve been watching you.” She drew in Kyuu’s hand, brushed her lips across sharp-tipped fingers. “Will you promise me that?”
“Of course I will, Del. After everything? Of course. But how will I know? It’s not like I’m someone Tyrande Whisperwind speaks to. I doubt she even knows who I am.”
“You’ll know. Ardenweald’s so close to the Dream they almost touch; they’re part of the same cycle. You know this. Trust me.” She held Kyuu’s hand between both of her own, encasing it in faded stars. “You’ll know. Now promise me, promise you'll watch.”
Kyuusei brought up her other hand, clasping Delyra’s fervently. “I promise to you. Whatever it is, I’ll watch it. I’ll protect it. I’ll protect you.”
“Thank you.”
Delyra’s soul stood still for a moment, then tugged at Kyuu’s hand as she began to walk again beneath the forest’s canopy.
“Now… tell me more about this other druid. What’s her name, Alania? And a druid of the branch, too.” Delyra suppressed a grin, her eyes dancing. “Isn’t she a little young for you?
“She’s a hundred and twelve!” It wasn’t clear if Kyuu’s outrage was genuine or feigned.
“Robbing the creche!” Del’s laughter echoed among the trees, sending shimmermoths fluttering from their perches. “You’ll be a millennia before she’s two hundred. Really, Sei-sei, you and some fresh-faced fledgling who doesn’t even have her tattoos…”
“Hey! You know she does! Lani earned them at…”
A squeeze of Delyra’s hand silenced Kyuu’s protests. “So long as she makes you happy, Sei-sei.” Her tone was softer, reassuring. “That’s all I want, is for you to be happy.””
“I will be,” Kyuu murmured, though doubt belied her words.
“I promise.”

Chapter Three
Tumblr media
I’ve taken to my sketchbook this summer. I bring it down to the beach every morning, and after my eight o’clock swim I sit on my beach towel and draw for about an hour. Sometimes I draw from my imagination, and sometimes I draw from life. If there’s a person walking along the shore I will challenge myself to capture them in a few rapid strokes of my pencil before they’ve moved too far away for me to continue, or if a house is cast in interesting light that day I’ll try to capture it with a few fluid strokes of paint from my travel watercolour kit and a thick brush. I don’t show my drawings to anybody because I’d be too embarrassed to, but they aren’t for anybody else either. I don’t paint or draw to get approval, it feels like the one area of my life where I can be free of judgement, able to create something without being marked or graded or compared to somebody else.
I usually work on my sketchbook until my phone alarm buzzes at half past nine. This is the time that I know Kelly and Claire will be getting out of bed and I’m usually starving by then anyway. I meet them back at the mobile home and we walk together into the village cafe to buy a bag of pastries and cups of hot coffee for breakfast.
Tumblr media
“It’s cloudy.” Kelly observes one morning in early July. We amble over the sandy boardwalk towards the beach and settle in together onto a bench outside the local surf shack.
“Not a day for the beach” Claire agrees, looking up at the sky, a woolly grey shawl wrapped around the cliffs. It had been clear and bright earlier, but a mist had settled in during the last hour and blurred the sea and sky into one . I wonder what we’ll do today if we won’t be hanging out on the beach again. I tell them that the water is still warm, and if they want to go for a swim it might be nice all the same, but they disagree. The clouds furthest away are black and filled with rain, and neither of them wants to get their hair wet.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The village is so much busier this week now that the primary school children have finished up for the summer. Small children and families mill about, a constant stream going in and out of the surf shack, buying ice cream cones and slotting coins into arcade machines. There’s something very retro about this place, the kind of sun bleached seaside haunt that looks as though it’s sat here in the sand unchanged for fifty years. The Beach Boys are playing over the speakers and a middle aged man with white hair and a Hawaiian style shirt is serving coffees and bags of chips over the counter inside as he sings along. The shelves behind him are stacked with bottles of suncream, cans of fizzy drinks, first aid implements, and T-Shirts that all feature the same cartoonish shark with a wide grin. They truly have everything.
Tumblr media
The Hawaiian shirt man comes out to the front of the shack to add a poster to the community notice board and gives us a grin when Kelly calls out a hello to him.
“Well girls.” He says and ambles over towards us, moving in that slow, easy way that people who live on the beach year round do. “Lovely weather eh?”
“Yeah sure.” Kelly snorts. “Grand auld day.”
“Nice one for the surf though.” He looks over his shoulder where a line of children in wetsuits are heading towards the shore. It’s true, the waves are bigger now than they have been since the storm last week. “Ye wouldn’t think of signing up for the camp would you?” We laugh, clearly the surf camp is not intended for girls our age.
“I see that Liam is helping out with it again this year.” Kelly says, gesturing to a young man loading surfboards into a beach buggy behind us. “Good on him. He’s got his work cut out with all these children running around. ”
Tumblr media
The boy who is apparently called Liam hears this, and he calls out to us from the surfboard shed. “Havoc, sure they go mad once the boards are brought out, most of the work is to control the crowd.” He has a boyish grin and classic surfer looks. His curly blonde hair is lighter than the tan on his face, and a tiny scar above his eyebrow stands out white against golden brown. He comes over and places a hand on the back of the older man’s neck, shaking him playfully. “Skiving off again are you dad? Out here chatting shite to the women as usual.”
He smiles at us “Good to have you back again Kelly, and you’ve brought some friends?”
“Yes,” She says. “Liam, this is Evie and Claire, Evie and Claire, this is Liam. And his dad Anthony.” Liam shakes our hands, and I feel shy when he looks at me. His eyes are very blue.
“Will you all be coming to the karaoke night later on?” He points to the flyer that his dad pinned up on the notice board moments earlier. “It’ll be in the pub down on the quay. It’s always great fun, at least I always think so.”
Tumblr media
“I’m not sure about that.” I laugh. The idea of standing up in front of strangers and singing is making my cheeks feel hot already. For me, being observed at all sometimes feels like a horrifying ordeal. Liam smiles “Are you a bit shy, Evie?” Again, I blush.
“She’ll be grand when she gets there.” Kelly says. “It’ll be a bit of fun. What do you think, Claire?” Claire shrugs and sips her coffee. “Could be good. I can’t sing but I don’t mind karaoke.”
Tumblr media
“We’ll see you all there.” Says Liam decisively, and then looks over at the children waiting on the beach. “Better get to work.” He races back over to the beach buggy, hops in and drives it over the boardwalk towards the sea. We say our goodbyes to Anthony too, and we three are alone together again Kelly nudges me sharply in the ribs. “What about him?” I pretend not to know what she’s talking about. “What about him? Seems like a friendly person to me. A very normal boy.”
She rolls her eyes. “What about him for you? Do you think he’s good looking?”
“Yes I suppose.” I admit “But he’s not really my type.”
“If he’s not your type then who is?”
I feel interrogated. I don’t know how to explain it to her, but the idea of being romantically attached to Liam in any way makes me panicky. There’s nothing wrong with him, it just feels like too much pressure. “I don’t know, I just think he’s more your type and not mine.”
Tumblr media
My attempt to flip the focus onto her backfires. “Oh, so he’s not good enough for you, but he’s good enough for me?” I feel like she is deliberately misunderstanding me.
“No…” I say, trying to keep my voice steady. How do I explain that if I like a boy, I want the connection to happen organically? I don’t want to be set up like some loveless little freak who needs someone to hold her hand through the dating process. I want to meet somebody and feel comfortable enough to get to know them without the pressure of my friends watching me from the sidelines, judging my every move, coaching me in what to say and how to act, and then forcing me through the humiliating debrief period after. I feel like I’m a pitiful project sometimes, a specimen in a lab labelled ‘never had a boyfriend… and is also very weird.’
I don’t say any of this though, and as usual I end up apologising to her. I tell her that I’ll try talking to him at the karaoke night and we leave it at that.

Note
youve mentioned in a previous ficlet that lucius is an ass eating pro so id love to see him using those skills on izzy for the first time
(excuse you,  I love this prompt, thank you. )
Sex with Lucius was a revelation. Not so much in the ‘oh how interesting, that’s novel’ way, but a a ‘angel of god with thirty eyes, a fiery sword and words of prophecy’ kind of way. Izzy was aware that that could mostly be chalked up to his own dearth of experience, but he’d like to think it was also just Lucius.
They had only had a handful of nights together and Izzy was already sure that if Lucius walked out tomorrow and didn’t come back, he would never find his equal again. Not that he was going to tell the man that any time soon.
The worst part of all of it, was he was fairly sure Lucius knew that he felt that way anyway.
“Look at you,” Lucius smoothed a finger over Izzy’s bottom lip. “Gorgeous thing.”
Izzy had just spent a delirious string of minutes proving that he had already learned a lesson or two in how Lucius liked to be worshiped. His tongue ached a little, and his jaw was reporting in a few error messages, but Izzy had already shunted that aside. He would have happily continued on with the task if he’d been allowed.
Instead Lucius’ hand was in his hair, holding him bare inches away from his still hard cock. His tongue darted out to chase Lucius’  thumb and he was rewarded by it slipping between his lips.
“I’m really in the mood to be on top tonight,” Lucius informed him. “We haven’t done that yet, but you said it was green. That still true?”
Izzy relinquished the digit to say, “Yes.”
He’d already learned that Lucius had some strong, often mildly irritating, ideas about enthusiastic consent. They were, Izzy had to admit, probably for the best, but it did bring a disconcerting abruptness to things that had been easy seconds before.
“Do you like it really rough?”
“Yes.”
“Shocking,” Lucius grinned. “Too bad for you tonight though. We haven’t played that way yet, so we’re going to take our time and I’m going to make sure it doesn’t hurt.”
Izzy did not whine. It was a very close thing.
“If you could kill with your eyes.” Lucius shook his head. “But you can’t and I’m in charge, right?
“Yes,” Izzy conceded.
“One day I’ll give you no warning and no prep if that’s what you want, but we need to know each other a lot better for that.”
Know him better? Lucius had already cracked open his rib cage and rustled around inside. How much better, how much closer did he want to get? There wasn’t much of Izzy left, really. Lucius could have it if he wanted it, but it was only scraps, broken glass and duct tape in there.
“Do you want to see me while I prep you or be on your stomach?”
Choices? Fuck. Izzy had to scrape himself together back enough to engage in some higher brain function or at least do his best impersonation of it. He closed his eyes and tried to see his way through both versions.
The thought of Lucius at his back wasn’t bad. He’d done it before. But...fuck. Yeah. This would be different. He hadn’t exactly ignored himself in the ensuing years. He’d used his own hands and scattered images. Sometimes he’d tried to draw on memory, but that had inevitably shut things down rather than drawn them out.
Someone else handling his body that way would be...
“See you,” Izzy said quietly.
“Very good,” Lucius cupped his cheek, leaned down and kissed him. “Excellent job. Next time we try something new, we’ll talk it out ahead of time. Sorry. But thank you for coming back for me to do it now. You’re all done with choices, promise. Get up here and lay down.”
Izzy gratefully got up and laid himself out. He watched as Lucius finished undressed, sloughing off his clothes until he was gloriously naked. Izzy feasted on the vision of him. The bedside light was on, casting Lucius in it’s soft glow. He looked like art, marble that was still unbearably human. The wispy trail of dark hair from navel to the base of his cock made Izzy long to touch. To be touched.
The drawer in the table was opened, Lucius setting up a few things within easy reach. He paused to take a sip of water from his glass, then climbed back on to the bed, kneeling beside Izzy’s hip.
“I don’t even know where I want to start.” Fingers danced up Izzy’s leg from ankle to knee, trailing slowly over his thigh. “No. That’s a lie. I know exactly what I want to do. I wonder if you’ll like it?”
If? Izzy tried to imagine something Lucius would do right now that he wouldn’t like. It had to be something green. So far Lucius hadn’t even suggested a yellow, let alone pushed against red. Izzy was beginning to believe that he never would. Maybe those boundaries would be allowed to stay, instead of existing only to be knocked over.
“You must’ve at least tried it once before,” Lucius decided. “To marked it as all right. So we’ll see. And it will hold you in a very difficult position. I know you like that.”
“Yes,” Izzy said, then winced. He hadn’t been asked a question.
“Your enthusiasm is appreciated,” Lucius pinched the thigh he was caressing. Izzy’s breath caught. “But I need you to behave. I’d hate to interrupt my fun to remind you of how to keep quiet.”
Izzy wanted to apologize, wanted to ask about consequences, but then Lucius was moving to straddle him and that was very distracting.
“Spread ‘em,” Lucius slapped at one leg, then reached up and grabbed a pillow.
For a brief, possibly hysterical, possibly hopeful, moment, Izzy wondered if he was about to be smothered. Instead, Lucius slid a hand under Izzy’s ass, urging him up and then put it under his hips.
“It’s an angle thing,” Lucius explained without looking at him. “God, your thighs are fucking incredible. I keep thinking I’m going to chip a tooth when I bite them.”
That did not stop him from doing just that, a searing pointed kiss that had Izzy arching up off the carefully placed pillow immediately.  His whole world narrowed to that sucking point for several glorious seconds.
“Oh look, something else is rock hard now,” Lucius determined as he drew away. “Let’s see if we can’t keep that going. Legs on my shoulders.”
He obeyed, but it was very vulnerable all at once, exposed to Lucius’ hungry gaze. Izzy fought down the urge to curl back up. A hand flattened out onto his stomach, holding him in place. He breathed through it.
“Yes, there you go,” Lucius grinned then he was moving. Izzy hadn’t seen him grab the lube which seemed at odds with what he’d said earlier. Maybe he’d missed it somewhere in the haze.
Maybe Lucius had misdirected what he was going to do. That’d be a first though. Seemed unlikely-
What the fucking fuck?
Lucius was spreading him open, so close that he must’ve been getting a very odd eyeful. The squirming feeling was back, and then...fuck. Then it was banished entirely as the delicate tip of Lucius’ tongue flickered over his hole.
Izzy had to bring his own wrist to his mouth so he wouldn’t blurt out. He didn’t even know what he’d say. He knew people did this. He’d seen it in porn (where it had seemed dreamily impossible in the same way so many things did there) and tried to imagine how it might feel (slimy maybe?).
But the immediacy of it was nothing he could’ve prepared for. The way Lucius held him ruthlessly open, heedless of the barrier he was crossing. It was uncomfortable. It was bizarre.
And then Lucius pressed his tongue flat and lapped at him and all sense and reason crumbled to dust. Izzy started sightlessly at the ceiling, a coil of lust unraveling in him as quick as a snake. Within a minute of such attention he was shaking, within two, ungodly sounds were clawing their way out of his throat.
It was too much. It wasn’t enough. It was disgusting. It was bliss.
Lucius pulled away to suck in a breath and Izzy caught sight of him, pupils blown, lips chaffed pink with a satisfied smirk smeared on them.
“You like that,” Lucius determined, but he reached for the lube and Izzy was profoundly grateful.
He wasn’t sure he liked it. He was sure that he wanted it again though. He wasn’t sure how both could be true, but that’s what he was left with as Lucius shifted again. A finger prodded where Izzy was still damp, then slid inside.
It wasn’t the same as doing it himself, but he knew that already. Lucius liked to finger him during a blowjob, and seemed to think one went with the other as a matter of course. Though with the previous...attention, it all went a lot easier.
“Yes, just like that,” Lucius murmured, barely seeming to be directing the words at Izzy, eyes locked on his hand.
There was more, Izzy lost track of it as Lucius idly started playing with his cock too. Nothing satisfying, just odd strokes here and there, keeping him at attention.
“Mm, I think you’re ready. At least, I know I am,” Lucius decided. He picked up a tissue from the nightstand and carefully wiped off his fingers before griping Izzy’s thigh.
And...that was such a small thing, wasn’t it? It hardly mattered if Izzy got lube and whatever else on him. Lucius was already rendering him down to component parts and a shower was very much in his near future. Who cared?
Lucius apparently, who was also now placing a kiss on the inside of Izzy’s knee. No bite at all. But then his hands were hard on Izzy’s hips, dragging him forward and back into the right head space.
“I’m going to fuck you now,” Lucius grinned down at him. “You have permission to make whatever noise you like. Talk even. In fact, just for tonight, I encourage it.”
Izzy shook his head mutely, not willing to relinquish the silence that offered some amount of protection from all of this.
“We’ll see about that,” Lucius shrugged, lined himself up and then pushed in slowly. His eyebrows knit together, a small ‘v’ of concentration forming.  It was oddly adorable, discordant with his cool command.
He was young, Izzy remembered with a sudden vicious tenderness that took his breath away faster than the slow division of his flesh. Maybe this was vulnerable for Lucius too. Something he did less frequently, something he had slightly less faith in himself to do. It was just for a moment, a hanging breath of uncertainty. Then the ‘v’ smoothed away and Lucius was pulling him closer.
“Fuck,” Izzy said very very quietly, the fullness of sensation springing back to the forefront. And it just kept going, getting larger and more present.
Then they were flush, his ass cradled into the crevice of Lucius’ thighs and stomach.
“Yeah,” Lucius turned and kissed Izzy’s knee, casual as anything as if that was perfectly normal. “You’re tight as a vice. Going to stay here until you’ve relaxed a little.”
A hand came down to his stomach and rubbed slowly circles. Izzy wanted to bark at him to just touch his cock. To just move. To take what he wanted and leave him be. But the hand felt good too, hypnotic in its way. And Lucius kept pressing his lips to Izzy’s leg, no bite, just those soft rubbed red lips.
“There we go,” Lucius smiled down at him. “I knew you could do it.”
Izzy had no idea what he’d done, but he would’ve faked it a million times to get that.
“Gonna move now.”
The world fell apart for a while, but what use did Izzy have for the world anyway? He could lie here while it washed away, rocked by Lucius, held together by his hands.
Somewhere in there, he became aware that he was making noise, moaning wantonly like someone who did that.
“That’s my clever one,” Lucius praised, “making all those lovely sounds for me. Stroke your cock now, I’m busy and I want to watch you come while I do this.”
Izzy grasped himself firmly, stripping himself. Despite what he’d said, Lucius’ fingers wrapped around his own, slowing him down before departing again. It synched him to Lucius’ hips and that was something else altogether. It all felt like one motion, a fathomless loop.
Until it didn’t. Until he broke on the shore with a deep groan, Lucius’ careful thrusts going ragged and staccato, then stilled entirely with a very small ‘oh’ cresting from his lips.
They both stopped, catching their breath, looking at each other across the vast ocean of space between them. Lucius gently let down Izzy’s legs, rubbing idly at his thighs after.
“You okay?”
“Yes,” Izzy nodded to try to get it all across. Okay? Insufficient. Unacceptable.
He had nothing else.  Lucius lay down beside him, pulled him in.
Izzy went without complaint.
“How long since the last time you did that?” Lucius asked him in a hush.
“A long time.”
It would be many months before Lucius would learn exactly how long. Maybe even start to figure out how many things were firsts. By then, they would be miles ahead of that and it would be difficult to remember the fragility of those first shaky steps out onto the plank that stretched between them.
“Thanks then,” Lucius pressed a kiss to his forehead. “For letting me.”
“Thanks for doing it,” Izzy said to Lucius’ collarbone. He rested his forehead there after. He wasn’t quite ready to part.
Maybe he would never be, he thought, and that was a pit opening beneath his feet he wasn’t ready for either. He shoved the thought away. There was only now. There was only this. Tomorrow for the rest of it. Or never.

Hii! May I please request a Blackfem! Special Ops Reader x RE6 Leon one-shot where they're both undercover at a masquerade ball. While looking for a sample of the c-virus and Leon is taken aback by her dress then thrilling chaos ensues lol Thx in advance 💕
Tumblr media
“Alright, you know what this is about. We’re only here to locate and extract the C-VIRUS, without detection. I’m gonna assume that you understand this isn’t just about the party, Agent.”
You roll your eyes at the DSO Agent’s voice already bossing you around through the hidden earpiece.
“Yeah yeah, it’ll be a piece of cake, Agent Kennedy. No sweat, we’ll be long gone before anyone catches wind about it.” You respond.
You were one of the best amongst Special Ops, which was why you were on this mission to retrieve the sample of the virus. . with Leon Kennedy.
He was one of the best DSO agents, having much more experience dealing with things like this, especially with disasters. He never talked to anyone about it, but you knew what happened in Raccoon City all those years ago, and as much as he irked you sometimes. .
You couldn’t help but feel for him, it was his first night on the job as a cop, just to deal with the walking dead, freakish mutants, and apparently losing someone that meant something to him. He must hold so much hurt in his heart, so much guilt, that you couldn’t help but want to whisk it away.
But, the mission was simple. Infiltrate a masquerade ball, locate the virus, and extract it without causing any trouble or being spotted. Seemed easy enough, now that you had this famous agent on your side.
You both entered the ball separately, splitting up meant that you’d be able to cover more ground, get out of there quicker. You noticed the guards disguised as butlers packing heat when you came in, the more reason not to draw too much attention to yourselves.
“Careful, these guys down here are packing. I’m gonna try to see what I can find upstairs, meet me there when I give you the signal.” You whispered into the earpiece, giving a smile through your butterfly mask as you lifted a glass of wine from a servant’s tray, swiftly making your way through the crowd.
“Nice looking out, sweetheart. I’ll start sweeping the rooms, I’ll meet you there. Let me know if anything happens. Can’t let this thing go down to shit, this suit was fucking expensive.”
He sighed, which makes you giggle.
As rough and mean as he looked and tried to act, he was still a charm to be around. Then again, you spent a pretty penny on this dress too, so you had no room to talk. It would be incredibly fucked up if these guys tore it up, and you’d be beating everybody to hell and back.
After a bit of sneaking, showing a pretty, innocent smile, and avoiding the advances of tipsy guests, you made it upstairs. . no one saw you, as you had hoped. You picked up the skirt of your slim, glittery dress around your calves so you moved faster.
“C’mon, show me what I wanna see. .” you huffed to yourself, picking a lock to the most suspicious door you’ve ever seen. And you know what they say when it comes to suspicious doors. . you’ve hit the jackpot.
You smiled, sighing a relieved, “Yes!”, when you finally got the lock open. And there it was, a sample of the C-VIRUS, waiting for you in it’s briefcase. Finally, some good news to tell your partner.
“Hey, I’ve found the sample, it’s located in the upstairs west wing of the mansion. I repeat, located in the upstairs west wing of the mansion.”
“Good job, gorgeous. I’m on the way, until then, stay put. You can do that for me, right?”
You didn’t know why, but something about what he just said made your heart flutter, a bright smile on your face as you felt the heat rise to your cheeks, giving a hum in agreement as you began to wait.
Those few moments you’ve previously talked started to feel like forever, you started to check the clock and automatically think the worst.
Sure, Leon could take care of himself just fine, he was the best after all. But, it still made you worry about him. He shouldn’t have too much trouble, and him of all people wouldn’t have wanted to cause a ruckus.
“Whoa. . is that you, Agent?”
You flipped around at the sound of his voice, watching him take off the plain, black masquerade mask to get a better look at you.
Out of all the dresses, you picked one that really made you stand out. But, in a good way. It complemented your form wonderfully, covering your body in a deep, azure blue.
Blue. . it really suit you.
“Uh, earth to Kennedy? Is your brain still functioning, lover boy?” You teased, causing your current partner to shuffle in his steps, trying to hide the soft blush that began to bloom across his face.
“Uh, yeah. . it’s just. .” he spoke, searching for words that couldn’t describe how ethereal you looked right now. He told himself, no, he demanded himself to not fall in love again.
But, damn, you were starting to make it hard.
He let out a soft cough to get rid of the awkward silence in the air, shaking his head as he folded his arms.
“You look good, you really played the part tonight. You said you found the sample?”
You nodded, a smile across you face as you lifted the briefcase in your hand. “Yup, it’s all right here, now all we gotta do now is wait for the chopper for extraction.”
This earned an approving smile from the man as he moved closer to you, opening the case to be sure and. . to admire you.
You knew he was one handsome man, you’re sure everyone knew that, whether he made it known or not. But, this suit he had on tonight made him look like a model on the front page of a magazine.
He didn’t say much else, but his hands slowly rising to the sides of your face, silently asking for your permission to remove the glittery butterfly mask from your eyes, which you answered with a nod.
Hands that were able to beat the hell out of enemies, that handled weapons with ease. . were so gentle and at ease as he untied the silk ribbons from around your head, slowly removing the mask from your face while carefully dusting the glitter from your eyes.
Something about being this close to him, his eyes never leaving yours in a way that felt so intimate, made your heart race.
“So. . how about you and I go out for dinner some time? I know a nice little restaurant back home, it’ll be all on me.”
It surprised you that he asked you out like this, a smile rising to your face, but before you could even answer, the door was rammed in. Both of your heads flicking to the cause of the noise.
As you expected, heavily armed butlers began to rush in.
“Neither of you move!”
You sighed, “So much for in and out, where the fuck is the chopper?”
“I swear to god, I’m going to give those idiots hell. Looks like that date will have to wait for a moment, sweetheart, it’s time to clean house.”
You smiled as both of you stood side by side, pulling out your guns.
“You go right, I go left?” You asked, earning a smirk from the other.
“Looks like you've read my mind, gorgeous.”
This was going to be quite the night, but at least you could take that date as a reward for all your troubles. Who knew that you’d end up on a date with the, Leon S. Kennedy?
That would be the tale of the century.
