thinking about killing eve again. thinking about eve. and her inhabitions and how she was so repressed and unfulfilled and her only true escape from that was her extensive research into female assassins and through that and getting fired and then rehired she meets villanelle and they basically bring out the worst in each other obvi but that’s also kinda their best selves because all villanelle wants is to be understood and that’s also what eve wants but she denies and denies and denies and she basically keeps denying everything until it’s too late and she’s left alone, again, screaming out in the water.
#like this shit is tragic IF ONLY IT WAS WELL WRITTEN. my god#i haven’t even rewatched this show ever since the last episode aired how do i have all of this just stored away in my brain#eve is such a wasted character because she’s literally so interesting#and then they just kinda fuck it up because they couldn’t really commit to her and her desires#which is also reflected in the show through her character bc she denies and denies and denies until it’s too late#too late being villanelle ending up dead and villanelle was basically the personification of all of eve’s dark desires#like villanelle kinda fucked up her life and killed her best friend and hurt so many of the people eve loved#and eve still was in her orbit because. BECAUSE!!!!!#i’m literally ranting right now and i don’t even know why#like i could go on and on but none of u wanna hear that#like eve is alone in a mental sense in the start and she’s alone in a literal sense in the end#like lol. this isn’t even talking about the romantic aspects of it either#don’t even hit me with that their obsession went deeper than romance sit they wanted to fuck each other let’s get real#i kinda need a reboot of killing eve but with good writing all the way through#i dunno. i dunno why i’m even talking about this#like i’m gonna be 80 and still babbling about killing eve and toxic yuri madness in the nursery home#this show wasted literal years of my life i’m never gonna get back….#BLEGH. sick sick sick sick sick sick sick SICK#killing eve#my text

thoughts on callista and gavin? have a great day!
Loving these asks! I am always happy to get up on my soapbox about these characters. This time I'm focusing on how Gavin is convinced that Callista is the one who wrote A Tradition of Tragedy and how it shapes/reflects their relationship. It's actually super interesting to me that he thinks this, and I was glad they addressed it in All of Our Demise.
Because if you think about it, the theory doesn't make much sense. To begin with, the "Grieve" who is the author is constantly making reference to "their" family and Callista wouldn't devote so much time and energy writing about the family that she was just going to leave. I mean, she was probably engaged at that point, right? At a bare minimum, she knew she wanted to become a Payne and leave her old life behind. So publishing a whole book from the perspective of a member of her family wouldn't make sense.
Obviously, we know that she didn't write it, but even when Gavin doesn't know that, he could have thought about it and his theory wouldn't hold up. Even from a practical standpoint, I find it hard to believe that he wouldn't have noticed his sister constantly disappearing to do extensive research (bc Reid seriously did his homework) or getting calls from agents and editors and publishers and the like. All while she's supposed to be planning a wedding? The idea that Callista wrote the book makes no sense.
But Gavin still believes that she did for a really long time, and it heavily colors his interactions with her. Never once does he outright ask her about it. He doesn't have to. And I think it's because, at the surface level, she was an easy candidate who was well-informed about the Grieves and had mentally checked out of the family a long time ago, so she wouldn't feel guilty about spilling their secrets.
Gavin is firmly convinced that his sister wrote the book that made everyone look down on the Grieves, and his resentment of the book and how the public treats him because of it quickly devolves into resentment of his sister (which isn't helped by the way she effectively abandoned him as kids). When he finally accuses her of it, he doesn't even try to hide his bitterness: "Maybe you could make our family sound even more pathetic, too—although I guess you've already done that, haven't you?"
And Callista denies it, and he believes her, and that's that.
But here's the thing: Callista has clearly done a lot of thinking about the book, because she's the first one to theorize that it wasn't actually a Grieve who wrote it. She tells Gavin that she thinks they were set up. So she's read the book and put thought into it, and she's clearly a little upset about it, too. So even though she's fully checked out of the family, the blatant sharing of their secrets bothers her.
Not to mention that she's kept up on what Gavin is doing. She reads his interview with the Inquirer and even encourages him to work with Briony and Finley if it means he'll survive the tournament. So she obviously cares. But she didn't care enough to comfort him through his nightmares, or be there for him when he was training to be a champion, or hide her insulting shock when he shows up alive. But she cares enough to take in a kid that he drops off at her door and tell him the story of the first Grieve and try to help him survive.
Callista cares about Gavin, but every time it came down to it, she didn't care enough to make a choice that would help him, and ultimately it was because she wouldn't let herself care. It isn't fair to expect that she had an easy time of it, growing up with awful parents who had completely cast aside her brother and, debatably, her—but it also wasn't fair for her to pretty much turn off her love for her sibling and then turn it back on again once two external parties came up with a possible solution for the all-Grieves-must-die problem.
Which is why it gives me shivers when Gavin finally snaps, when he points out that the ongoing pattern for his family doesn't dictate his own odds of survival, that treating him like he was already dead was a fucked up thing to do. Callista is kind of faltering and she says that they all know the odds (implying that his odds are pretty much zero).
"Yeah," Gavin says. "One in seven."
This is a lot of words to say that I'm really fascinated by the minor plotline of Gavin thinking that Callista wrote the book and eventually being proven wrong. Because at the heart of that mostly-internal sibling conflict is their central problem: Callista cares about Gavin, but she's never allowed herself to care enough to make a difference, and he hasn't let go of expecting her to.

Rhaenyra deserves to be usurped in the show because of her stupidity. She shows no political cleverness and easily allows the Greens to increase their influence and control at court, which is why she is so easily usurped. When her father is on the brink of death she returns to Dragonstone instead of staying with Daemon in King’s Landing to make sure her allies are in place to help her ascend the throne peacefully.
I’m not against Rhae Rhae because she’s a woman, I’m against her because she’s just stupid and reckless. I’d be equally as against her if she was a man. Aegon II isn’t a better ruler in any way, but his council certainly is, and if he behaves like Robert Baratheon who was always drunk, his council would just rule the realm for him. So I believe that Aegon’s council would rule the realm way better than Rhaenyra would.
*EDITED POST*
A)
Show!Viserys’s ailment is far worse than it was in the book, so Rhaenyra seeing his death imminent is not canonical. Writers’ fault, no matter what GRRM says.
This alone would require a total rewrite of how things went down as to how the Greens usurped Rhaenyra both in the show and the book. Because unless Viserys were to explicitly tell Canon!Rhaenyra to go back to Dragonstone, I do not think that Book!Rhaenyra would look at Show!Viserys' condition and not stay at the Keep.
That the writers didn’t think of this, intentionally refused to follow through, means that they either wanted to write this show for mere bucks and were too lazy/uncreative to rewrite and follow their own rewritings OR they sincerely think Book!Rhaenyra is inherently unfit for the throne.
B)
You: “Rhaenyra deserves to be usurped in the show because of her stupidity. She shows no political cleverness and easily allows the Greens to increase their influence and control at court, which is why she is so easily usurped.”
What I am about to say is true for BOTH show and book Rhaenyra, bc the the story, her story, is the same:
I don't deny that Rhaenyra's last choices at KL were unstrategic OR self-contradictory (Rosby and Stokeworth [self contradictory in principle, strategic for the practical...in the moment], the Velaryon bastards-turned-lords, & Nettles). That after Nettles, she shouldn't have ruled.
I also think that those decisions are reflections of the already existing Targ-Andal patriarchal, blood-purist paradigm, that Rhaenyra is the example of a character who was FIRST felled down by the people around her (and harassed since childhood--10) and THEN by her own actions that were responding to those harassment and external doubt in her because she is a woman first invested with and then choosing to press for power and a position taken from her.
While it is definitely true that Rhaenyra seems to have always had some Targ-Andal elitism that built some of her confidence in her claim's validity, the personal history, plus the long societal censure, plus her kids dying would have some sort of effect on her. And it did, namely her doubling down and attempting to maintain control at all costs and most "conveniently"--or in the quickest gratification--which means conceding about Rosby and Stokeworth and attacking Nettles to reclaim Daemon (not just sexual partner, but her military and political support who if he had children with another would create competition for her and her kids).
I have a post where I talk about how Book!Alicent was majorly stupid HERE and how Show!Alicent is horribly written AND was never a true friend of Rhaenyra/a nonthinking "person" HERE & HERE. just because I never ever hear how people think ALicent messed up (and she did) espe making her anger lead her there. In fact, many actors did, and they are somehow "better" than Rhaenyra to some people bc they do not characterize Rhaenyra's feelings and responses as either consequential.
And then there is jeynearrynofthevale's post about how HotD failed or what they could have done to make the show better HERE, where they say:
Spend way more time on court politics and the buildup of the dance. Show why the two sides are falling the way they do and establish the core issues at play. Spend some more time establishing the characters before time jumps. Maybe give Rhaenyra motivation for ruling in terms of what she wants to do. Have her and Alicent navigate around each other in court.
Partly, I think that the kind of frustration people feel towards horror movie characters for not doing this and that has been copied just a little bit towards Rhaenyra and not enough on the writing of this show.
Canon!Alicent and Rhaenyra were 9 years apart and Alicent turned on Rhaenyra ever since she birthed Aegon II, so we know she has plotted against rhaenyra since then. And argued with Rhaenyra, openly since she was at least in her early teens.
Why did the writers choose to remove Alicent’s evil stepmother characterization and replace it with a pseudo-best friends relationship? Because they (Migeuls Sapochnik and Sara Hess I think) thought it was too discriminatory towards Alicent...meanwhile this experience of an older woman victimizing her stepchildren or just other children for the sake of her own power or her own children’s safety/prosperity is a very real and common event. And women can just want to benefit from the patriarchal system and freely victimize or fight other women for power within that system.
It is actually feminist to tell such a story, to let people see that cycle of patriarchal abuse and selfishness, how it enlists women to attack each other or attack vulnerable people. To remove that from Alicent and to make Rhaenyra this conciliatory person willing to give up the throne “for the realm” as Viserys told her is to make the general phenomenon of women wanting power into an inherently evil thing.
Canon!Rhaenyra didn’t want power and decided that everyone was now her bitches, anon, she wanted it because she was selected for it, and she feels up to the task so it is within her dignity, and Viserys explicitly named her as his heir. She never doubted her own rights visibly. And she "grew up" and stood up for herself in her black/red dress moment, you know, that moment that the writers gave to Alicent.
In the same canon moment, she was also silently saying to Alicent that she wasn't putting up with her domestic bullshit. So even Show!Rhaenyra is lacking and a reflection of sexist writing.
Here are a few posts as to why this show is sexist despite it claiming it is feminist:
Male Gaze, Female Vicitmization, and Visual Eroticism in HotD (a reblog of my post written by xenonwitch)
The essentialist argument of "Women-pacisift-and-weak vs Men” (written by rhaenyragendereuphoria)
Evil Women and Patriarchy (by ainomica)
Evil Stepmothers ARE Compelling (by minetteskvareninova )
C)
Rhaenyra is Princess/Lady of Dragonstone. She inherits a lord’s authority over it at the age of sixteen in the book, as is royal custom. Dragonstone:
is her family’s original Targ seat of power in Westeros (Aegon I and the Targs pre-Conquest)
the one place where her authority goes uncontested, so it is here where she can bunker her children and has already accumulated resources against the Greens
Basically, this requires more of a Doylist reading of HotD and a look at how the writers chose to write this season and how Rhaenyra/Alicent grew up while at court after both marry.
And in canon, Rhaenyra dragged Maester Gerardys with her to Dragonstone to heal Viserys when Mellos wasn't helping at all, but Alicent wanted her to leave afterward, saying Rhaenyra was an interloper:
Tumblr media
but Alicent was the one to try to send Rhaenyra away, saying she "meddled" into affairs that she mean to mean were not Rhaenyra's problem... despite Viserys being her father...:
Tumblr media
This, again, indicates that Alicent has been working to isolate and exclude Rhaenyra for years before and after Daemon came back in 111 A.C.
Alicent used to try to welcome Rhaenyra as a daughter, or at least be well-meaning sometime before her son was born:
Tumblr media
Rhaenyra was born 97 A.C. Aegon was born 107 A.C. Rhaenyra was 9-10 years old when he was born, which means Alicent started to resent and plot against her at that time:
Tumblr media
Alicent very clearly was building a faction and garnering support against Rhaenyra, and couple that with what happened to Otto, plus how hateful they became of each other, what Alicent thought she and her son were owed...I think it's very safe to say that she put Rhaenyra down a lot in the Red Keep with innuendoes, implicit insults, remarks, etc. also remarks meant to make her look bad or sluttish, like this one:
Tumblr media
Why this change? Or really, the suppression of the heat between them, the lack of backfire against Alicent?
D)
You: “Aegon II isn’t a better ruler in any way, but his council certainly is, and if he behaves like Robert Baratheon who was always drunk, his council would just rule the realm for him.”
You obviously never read the book. From the beginning, Aegon wanted and took control. while Criston lied to him that Rhaenyra would kill him otherwise, Aegon--I as I argue--likely always felt at least entitled to the throne and jealous of Rhaenyra's state if only because he feels entitled to a lot of things as a prince (his gluttonous and assaultive behavior). Only Alicent and his sister-wife being able to hold him back so he could be persuaded into not killing Rhaenyra. Twice. (Posts HERE, HERE, QUOTE #1, QUOTE #2, and what he would have done to Rhaenyra’s son, Aegon the Younger).
Aegon II and Robert Baratheon are still two different people, with different circumstances. Aegon II was born a prince and rode a dragon, inheriting the magical ability to ride dragons. He has his pride and because Alicent directly taught him to consider his own sister lesser, he was very eager to become king no matter what Septon Eustace has to say about it.
He argued with Otto directly for not bringing about things the way he wanted to. Robert never argued or felt powerful/able enough to argue against Tywin.
But he never allowed others to rule for him until he shattered and burned his body while fighting Rhaenys. and even after he does what he does at Dragonstone...I already alluded to it above in the parentheses where I give links to posts and quotes.
*EDIT* And then what happens AFTER Otto and Alicent dies?
E)
You: “I’m not against Rhae Rhae because she’s a woman, I’m against her because she’s just stupid and reckless. I’d be equally as against her if she was a man. [...] So I believe that Aegon’s council would rule the realm way better than Rhaenyra would.”
And yet, you think that Otto Hightower, the man who pushed Rhaenyra into the heir position by convincing Viserys to do so just so he can prevent Daemon being named heir -- thus he and Viserys started this whole debacle (if we were to argue about who was politically stupid here and set up this civil war) -- is a good candidate for ruling of any kind?
The same Show!man who forced his own daughter to marry a rotting, much older man just so he can seat her/Viserys’ sons by her on the throne for his own selfish benefit?
The same man who enabled Vaemond to go against Corlys’ wishes for Lucerys to get the Driftmark seat?
We can go back to how people expressed how the lords of Westeros and their kids looked at Rhaenyra askance because they were anxious that bastards in their own families would have an easier time contending with them....but:
Rhaenyra’s sons ARE "legitimate" and the lords have nothing to fear (written by theblackqveen)
bastardry is NOT natural, it is entirely contingent on human decision (original post written by me and the reblog by the-king-andthe-lionheart)
doesn’t Otto’s going against Corlys express wishes and plotting with Vaemond count as him endangering Corlys’ house’s succession and stability? The same argument that greens argue for how the lords/their sons will look at Jacaerys becoming king? Otto actively does this. Where’s the consistency, the truth-telling in this argument?
All this shows misogyny on your part, anon. Sorry about it.

im sorry but otis and maeve exacerbate the goodness and badness both in each other and this makes them special and more connected with their glimpses, gestures and inability to stay away for longer. unless ur telling me there are other superior ships too but the ending of s3 ep7 was so so special. Otis and Maeve's ending lines in the rain scene is pretty PRETTY indicative of who at least should be with whom, when its always been them in each others mind. Now idk what would writers do or make of it in s4 and cliffhanger like ending, but all love interests added were poorly added and gave us false hope for both characs to be with someone else like isaac/ruby thing, however the entire thing as eric says too, "happened bcs of otis and maeve coming together with special diff traits and bonds to form the best clinic that offers pretty feasible and amateur like opinions which in turn polished otis' skills of helping people more and also for maeve who was already pretty smart and bright ahead of her times, in her speech and tastes" and this was entire reason and beginning of the best season which led to clinical education, awareness for teenagers while otis and maeve also navigate through each others lives and troubles and love and ways of communicating since both have a different way of communicating and both adhere to each other and also give each other space more, (or maybe bcs i do prefer that ship more than others, im just so hyped at every scene and moment). However the best moment for me wasn't the bus scene kiss moment in france but when otis and maeve were both kicked out of sexed class for open and different opinions against or anti to whatever prude and harsh concepts Hope was instilling in people, a lot of ppl and characters owned up to their sexuality and rebelled but Otis and Maeve rejecting the idea and challenging and arguing but then also being kicked out of class is very special moment and a parallel between them that so many perhaps don't notice, It also tells how differently in choices, they are so connected in thoughts, Maeve never shrugged off otis and he doesn't bother her only and until they both knew they couldn't really stay away and he made an effort even after f_cking up to stay in his life, and apologized and competed rather foolishly with isaac but all this bottled down again to ruby and isaac just used for story development and then removed from scenes but in a way i think, it is best for them since otis and maeve are both confused about each other & overall relationships, i think they both would take things v slowly and they are that kind of patient couple if they are a couple.....which i cant see hope of. It all actually just started from them too, which led to graffitis and sexual topics to be embraced and accepted more, bcs idk if someone also noticed how otis has so much of jean in him, and even if he is embarrassed by his mother sometimes, the genes just reflect in him. He is good at articulating and smooth and i think maeve picks it up quickly, they don't even guess when they are together, and they both have innate desire to help ppl esp maeve under that hard rock shell of an exterior, she is the most selfless and forgiving person, maybe too much, and lets go of a lot of stuff, always looks forward to future and is quite pragmatic even but in sense of otis, they both are always inexplicably drawn and held together to each other by some bitter false or sweet ripe memory of their previous days and its so funny or adorable to see them actually cling foolishly to their past encounter messages, moments, talks, and dreams/jokes of having a clinic. We see eric as bestfriend of Otis rooting for them too, and so does Aimee (which is weak evidence or parallel since writers are putting hints like this always but it is always jeopardized somehow in the end too so im not hoping or keeping too high hopes on anything).
The rain moment in s3ep7 is the most heart-warming because maeve now doesn't push otis back and neither does she falls back on isaac somehow, and she welcomes his opinion again, only this time they actually confess in pretty open words & expressions which is more meaningful and rigorous and sparkling than the RainmomentInFrance which i think was, meaningless or maybe just a way to bring them close together.
You cannot tell me this is excellent dialogue exchange and yet so simple with breath your name by Sixpence playing in the BG,
Otis: "It was never about the clinic, it was to be close to you – and even if we aren't romantically together, id like to see you everyday, Nothing feels right when you aren't here"
This is more about companionship and soulmate-ism too than just a sexual relationship or deep crush situation. Even if they aren't together romantically, and still wanting to be close to her is big big thing & detail for at least something good and warm for them in future, because he hasn't confessed this to anyone or ruby even which was initially a casual relationship even. This explains pretty well that even if they aren't together or intended to be together, - the staying close + together or near each other is enough to make day.
Maeve: "It wasn't about the money for me, it was also to be close to you too
Maeve doesn't say much but a) smiles when he says we can be team and due to nearness to her he wanted to work on further and b).she exclaims and rebuts his claim that she was in it for money only when she has never been lucky in family/financial dept and wanted to be close to her too, but also how this was method for her to earn money too so like double benefit because maeve does need money and we cannot reduce her to romantic person only but the hardworking intelligent and practical persona she carries and embodies! and wants to rise academically and also does it selflessly, doesn't obstruct or infringe on someone's rights like most people do. But she also does admit at the same time it wasnt just for the money. With the background music score this moment might be the best cliché end or romantic confession even if in future it doesn't mean much because words...are winds and fade away, but i cannot deny the canon visible goodness these both characters bring out in one another, its like they do compliment and fit each other which i always find quite evident from s1 until s2 made their friendship too sour but its about what they bring in each other and only think abt themselves in each others presence. When they are with someone else they think about other things clouding their mind yet sometimes when they talk to each other, its like they both do comfort each other or it wouldn't have pained the writers to show how visibly hateful they are if they were. Perhaps the abortion moment in s1 was also very warm and changed my mind so much abt them, its like how otis is always there in worse situations for maeve along with aimee too ofc, and sometimes its childish to see him try so hard and desperate to be there but she eventually lets him in.

[Tales from the Pack] Hansol: Fire and Ice (Part Eight)
Tumblr media
Characters: Hansol x female reader
Genre/warnings: werewolf au, fantasy, angst but it’s actually not too angsty, i wouldn’t really call any of this fluff necessarily but it’s definitely not super angsty, mentions of not eating bc depression, mentions of death and suicide
Word count: 2,701
Summary: You’ve always been one to let your emotions get the best of you – your power reflects that – and you’ve never been good at expressing them. That’s why you always thought you’d be awful with a mate, but you never thought things would be this awful.
a/n: things in bold are in english. also since people have been asking, at the bottom of the tftp info list, there’s a list for jiung’s pack. i didn’t think remembering their names and such were really important for the story but people wanted to know who they were and requested i add it anyway. if there’s any other info you’d like me to add, please let me know!!
Previous | Next | Fire and Ice Masterlist
As expected, you were gone when Hansol woke up on the couch. He checked his room and saw a note on the nightstand, along with Chanseong’s ring. The necklace, however, wasn’t there.
Please give this to the pack. They deserve something of theirs as much as I do.
-_____
Hansol put the ring in his pocket before grabbing a jacket and some shoes to go out for the day. He figured he could make it to their house and be back in time for lunch, so he started off as soon as he was ready to go.
As he got to the door, Soonyoung stopped him, “Suvi and I went and spoke to that doctor the other day -- the one Hanbin’s pack mentioned to us. She said she can take a look at you…if you want.”
Hansol nodded, “I’m still thinking about it.”
“When will you decide?” Soonyoung sighed. “We all know it’s hurting you.”
Hansol couldn’t deny that even having on a very thin t-shirt still irritated the silver in him, but he wasn’t going to fix it until he was sure there was a good reason to.
“I’ll decide when _____ decides,” he stated before leaving the house and going toward Hanbin’s.
-
As expected, it only took a few hours in his human form. The ring was safely in his pocket, and he checked every so often to make sure it was still there. He didn’t want to touch it too much but he wanted to make sure it wasn’t suddenly lost or something.
Besides giving the pack the ring, he wanted to get a few things for you. Maybe some of your clothes or belongings you didn’t take, probably a few more shirts of Jiung’s just so you’d have other things that smelled like him. Maybe he’d even get one of his blankets or something just so it wouldn’t lose his scent as quickly. He just wanted things that would make you feel more at home with his pack, even if you only decided to stay with them for a short amount of time.
The fact that you were pushing him away hurt, but what hurt more was that you were unhappy. Hansol didn’t blame you, not at all. He knew you were pushing people away to cope, and people coped it different ways. Like you, some people preferred being alone rather than surrounded by others. Your brother had died, then his mate confessed to only you that he was going to kill himself, you were expected to step up and be an alpha, and everyone had been yelling at you to make decisions since the moment you woke up. He didn’t blame you for acting the way you did, even if you were pushing him away, too. He wanted to give you space to heal, hoping you’d come to him when you were ready.
But even if he wasn’t really the one who killed your brother, he understood your anger and frustration. From what your old pack had told him, you were known for bottling up your emotions until they burst, and you acted without thinking of consequences. You didn’t know how to make sense of what you felt, and you needed something or someone to blame and take your anger out on. Everyone who came near seemed to be a target, but he at least understood why you felt so angry. As long as he understood you, he didn’t think anyone else needed to.
He strolled up to the deck and knocked on the door. He smiled politely down at the mate who answered. He vaguely recalled her name was Seongmi.
“Oh, you’re from that other pack,” the girl smiled politely when she recognized him. “How can we help you?”
“Actually, I have something for your pack,” he began, as Hanbin and Jaesang made their way over. “And…I was wondering if maybe there was anything I could bring back for _____?”
“_____ ran away to your pack?” Hanbin asked, a relieved smile on his face.
Despite what Hanbin probably assumed, Hansol’s expression dropped, shaking his head, “No, not directly. She… One of our mates – the banshee – found her trying to do harm to herself. We got lucky.”
“_____…” Jaesang sighed, shaking his head as he ran his hands over his face.
Hanbin waved the younger wolf inside, “Please come in, Hansol.”
So he followed the two wolves into the living room. Most of the mates didn’t seem to be home, save for Rika who was sewing up Hyojun’s shirt that was completely torn down the back. The wolf just looked up at you and grinned while Rika kept her eyes on the needle between her delicate fingers.
The rest of the pack was inside and seemed to just be resting, mostly. Baekhan was lounging on the couch with a mug in his hands, and Jinyoung was sipping from a bottle of whiskey as he spoke about something else entirely to the two wolves in the room. The only one who seemed to be missing was Rin.
“Hey, Hansol!” Jinyoung nodded as he lifted his bottle to the young wolf. “What brings you back here? Wait, _____ didn’t–”
“_____ is safe,” Hanbin stated.
Jinyoung nodded again, trying to settle his heart that had picked up as he took another sip of whiskey, “Good, good. So then why’d you decide to stop by?”
“I went back to the house the other night,” he began as he fished around in his pocket. “I was hoping to find…well, anything related to Jiung or Chanseong, and I found Jiung’s necklace and gave it to _____. But she left and note and said you guys might want this.”
He opened his palm to show the ring. Hanbin took it, a smile growing on his face as he realized what it was. Even Rika had stopped what she was doing to see what it was.
“Is that…?” her question trailed off, her voice soft.
“It’s the ring,” Hanbin chuckled, shaking his head. “I’ll be damned. We figured there wasn’t going to be anything left.”
“That’s probably not made out of any normal gold,” Hyojun nodded. “Actually...what temperature does gold melt at?”
Hanbin looked up from the ring, his golden eyes sparkling, “Thank you, seriously. Bringing this back means the world to us.”
Hansol nodded in reply.
“You wanted some of the kid’s stuff, right?” Jaesang asked as Hanbin handed the ring off to Rika for her to look at.
Rika rolled her eyes before examining the ring, “She’s still older than you, Jae.”
“And maybe some of Jiung’s, if that’s okay. I noticed she likes to wear his things, and I figured the sweater she’s been wearing is losing his scent. Maybe there’s something that’ll keep the scent for longer that’s less prone to getting dirty,” Hansol chuckled, carding a hand through his hair.
“Of course,” Hanbin nodded. “Follow me.”
The alpha led him upstairs, going to your room first. Hansol quickly went through and grabbed anything he thought you might need, stuffing it into a backpack that was hung on the back of your door. He made sure to grab the picture of you, Jiung, and what he assumed was the rest of your family, off of your nightstand as well, and one of you and a very large group of people – he assumed was the pack before so many died – before he left the room.
Down the hall, Hanbin stopped and opened a door. As soon as it was opened, Hansol knew it was Jiung’s because it still smelled strongly of the late alpha. He looked around a bit, noticing the place was less minimalistic than yours. It had a lot more pictures on desks and dressers, and even hanging on the walls. Clearly, family and pack were something Jiung treasured dearly. There were pictures of other people around Jiung’s age, as well as pictures of people who seemed to be from other countries just like the one he’d grabbed from your room. With Hanbin’s help, Hansol was able to pack pictures that seemed most important, such as ones with your family and old pack members you were close with.
The second thing he did was go through Jiung’s clothes, grabbing as many sweaters as he could since you seemed to like warm things – he assumed it was because of your firebending power – but also a few t-shirts. Hanbin also took the knitted throw blanket from Jiung’s bed and handed it over to the younger wolf.
“His mother knitted this for him and sent it with him as a birthday gift one year,” the alpha explained. “I think _____ will like this, and she’ll probably keep it someplace where it won’t lose the scent. But if she ever misses him and needs something else to feel close to him, you know where to find us.”
Hansol gave the older wolf a grateful smile, “Thank you, Hanbin.”
“You take good care of _____, okay?” Hanbin told him, clapping a hand on Hansol’s shoulder. “If you can do anything about it, don’t let her leave you. I know she’s not really mad at you, but she’s too overwhelmed to face her real emotions. Just…help her though them if you can.”
“I’ll try,” Hansol nodded with a sure look, “I promise.”
-
As he expected, Hansol made it back just in time for lunch. He went and brought everything upstairs, planning to unpack it all afterwards. You weren’t up there, so he assumed you weren’t home – at least he hoped that you weren’t home yet but you would be. So he left the backpack on the bed and went downstairs to wash up for lunch.
As he bounded down the steps, he could hear the pack talking with each other. They seemed to be adjusting nicely to the new house which made everybody happy. Suvi was so far unrecognizable – then again, word about her might not have traveled this far yet – Eunjin hadn’t been screaming as often – though she did one night but she said it was because she couldn’t “hear them” and nobody was going to ask what that meant – and even the wolves seemed to enjoy the larger space. The only person having a more difficult time was Jia just because she was still trying to memorize the layout.
“Hansol!” Yeji grinned as she walked over to him. Dirt was covering every part of her skin that was exposed, and her tail was swishing lazily behind her with some patches of fur matted down. “Do you know if _____ is coming?”
He just shrugged, trying not to let his face turn into a frown, “I’m not sure, to be honest.”
Yeji just scrunched up her nose, one of her ears twitching slightly, “Oh… Uh, well, try not to get too upset over it, y’know? She’s still…recovering.”
“Im Yeji!” Jihoon barked, frowning at the state his mate was in. “Go clean up, you’re not eating like that!”
“Relax,” she scoffed, turning to face her mate, “I’ve eaten off the forest floor before.”
“No,” he stated, grabbing her  hand and bringing her to the bathroom. “You’re not eating while you’re covered in dirt. That’s disgusting.”
Hansol just chuckled at the couple and made his way to the kitchen where most of the pack was, and where the great smell of food was coming from. He hoped that maybe someday you and him could be like Yeji and Jihoon. He thought they were cute.
The pack started taking seats as they waited for food to be done. They typically took food from the stove and then went to wherever to eat it, but they only sat at the table to wait for it to be done. And sure enough, at noon, Soomin, Jun, and Mingyu stepped away from the stove to let the mates get their food.
And only a few seconds later did Hansol’s heartbeat pick up, and then a moment after that, the front door opened. The werewolves heard it as well, but the entire pack didn’t look until the door closed.
You appeared in the doorway, seeing lots of eyes on you which made your cheeks heat up involuntarily.
“…Hi,” was all you could think to say.
“Hi, _____!” Danbi chirped, and you thanked whatever higher being that she was there to make things less weird. “Glad to have you for lunch!”
“Yeah, come sit,” Mingyu smiled, waving you in.
As you entered the kitchen, you locked eyes with Hansol for a brief moment. He was looking at you almost in awe, like God had appeared right in front of him for afternoon tea, and you felt your face heating up even more. You cast your gaze downward as you went to take the seat between Mingyu and Eunjin.
“_____, you’re welcome to get food with the girls,” Soomin told you.
You just shook your head, replying instinctively, “Mates eat first.”
That was always the rule with your previous pack: mates, then both male and female wolves. You may not have eaten as much as a male wolf could, but you definitely ate more than any human.
So after all the mates got their food, Mingyu gestured for you to help yourself. However, you didn’t want to eat. You still had that pit in your stomach that just made you want to gag at the mere idea of food. You really just wanted to go crawl back into bed and hide, but you couldn’t do that here -- you did go back to Baekhyun just to let him know you were still alive because he panicked a lot when he woke up to you missing, and you considered just staying there again. There were too many people here to hide, and you were sure to get annoyed by the noise.
“I’m not hungry,” you mumbled, waving their concerned looks away with your hand.
“_____, you should really eat something,” Soonyoung spoke up. “When was the last time you ate?”
“When I was out,” you lied. All you actually did when you were out was hide to escape the noise and people to be alone. “I’m fine, seriously.”
So the males got up to get their food, taking basically whatever was left. You listened to the pack chat with each other while you silently watched them eat. Hansol sat on the opposite side of the table between Seokmin and Joshua, and you could feel his eyes on you the entire time. However, he didn’t try making conversation with you at all.
“So, _____,” Joshua began, speaking in English as he gathered food with his utensils, “mind if I ask what you’ve been up to lately?”
You just shrugged, “It’s been a while since I’ve seen the town. I went to visit some old friends, went to see what’s changed, stuff like that.”
“And how are you…feeling today?” he asked, his tone suddenly more serious as he was referring to what happened the night before.
You just shook your head and didn’t say anything. He got the hint, though. You didn’t want to talk about it, and that was a feeling he understood. Although, you still couldn’t help but wonder how Eunjin got to you when she did. Did Jiung really manage to lead her there before anything happened? Was she sure it was him?
“Does Eunjin know who she’s speaking to?” you asked Josh, looking down at your plate. You would’ve asked her yourself, but you didn’t want to let the rest of the pack in on your conversation topic. “Like, is she aware of who they were before?”
“I think so, yeah,” Josh nodded. “Why, are you thinking about last night?”
Slowly, you nodded, looking up to meet Joshua’s curious golden eyes, “My parents believed in spirits and stuff. They also said that if you woke up from a dream with a headache, that a spirit was getting inside your head to talk to you.”
The older wolf just shrugged, “I dunno, _____. At this point, I kind of just believe any of that could be possible. I guess it’s up to you to decide if you believe, though.”

random excerpts from black girl time travel kny au
Pairing: rengoku / oc
note: lots of angst mostly. forgive me for this not being y/n format i have to work up the chops to be graceful enough to write that
tagging @dudeandduchess and @adoriable and @tengens-bunny bc they sparked the greatest muse i’ve ever had to write fictions since i was like 14 literally wtf you are my queens???!?!
Tumblr media
even with her mind working double overtime to secure her discomfort, the serenity if the rengoku estate could not be diminished. imene tried her hardest to remember any time prior to her time shift where she saw the moon so brilliantly illuminating the earth below it. each blade of grass, every stone in the garden reflected its glow; the whole of her surroundings were accented with such a pure silvery lining, giving a beauty distinctive to the night alone. it was tranquil enough for her to eventually draw a cleansing breath through her lungs, which finally released some of the staleness of doubt and second guessing that had filled her self image lately.
“you are awake still, imene-chan?”
that voice struck her in her chest, shooting sparks of heat and flutters in her stomach. and the fact that she was hearing it meant he was home. safe. and home.
“imene,” she softly insisted, making him smile as though he were being teased.
“imene.” his voice was warmer when he said her name, she would swear to it. and it stirred in her heart almost painfully with the need to hold him forever.
“i couldn’t sleep,” she shrugged off her dilemma, far more preoccupied in the happiness of seeing him, falling into those gorgeously untamed eyes and sweet smile again… “i’m happy to see you!”
“kyojuro.”
when the depth of his rich tone interjected his name, it caught her by surprise. and, true to form, he hadn’t needed her to say a word before reading her thoughts and emotions with complete accuracy.
“wh–?”
he lessened the distance between them, tucking his chin to sustain her eye contact where she sat, “imene… would you say it for me?”
the shadow of pessimism in her brain was shouting. he was easing the lines of formality as a kindness—-it was his vibrant character and nothing more. why was she so dense as to not even understand that? why did a simple name make her world feel brighter, and have her smiling to him, lovestruck?
“kyojuro.”
he smiled. with utter bliss, he smiled at her, exhaling like she’d lifted a weight from him. “ah… i prefer that, i think… don’t you?"
just like that, the playfulness was back in his voice and eyes. though, another element felt as though it had been added unto it. one she was far too daunted to even hope to name. so she changed the subject.
"how’re you feeling..?” she asked, lifting herself to stand, “you’re not hurt anywhere, are you? did you get any sleep or did you come right–”
she’d closed the remaining space between them as she fretted over him. ginger, worrying hands grazed butterfly touches up his chest, and the moment she’d made the mistake of tenderly cupping his face, his grin vanished… along with the delusion of pleasant standing she had dared hoped for with anyone there. it took so very little, but reality struck her like frozen lead.
the subtlest way she could, imene lowered her touch away from him, even as she felt stony ice fill her stomach at his reaction. she could feel how he’d stiffened just before she took her hands away. so then, at that very second with how clear things had become, finality settled into her. still, she wished he would have just lunged his blade through her gut instead; the pain would have been so much less.
“i–” kyojuro tried his best to play off the disgust, to turn the awkwardness in any other emotional direction. the poor thing even had the courtesy to look remorseful—-very convincingly, at that. god, how noble could one man be to still be kind and gentlemanly even now, trying to play off repulsion as he so obviously was? “no, i am not injured, i am feeling well! but i wished to return home as quickly as i could once i’d fulfilled my assignment. so, yes, i made the decision to return directly. i hope you haven’t been up out of worry for me.”
he was even back to beaming a smile by then, close-eyed and cheerful. she could only give half the heart in her attempt to smile back, barely nodding to acknowledge his answer. the bolt of dejection was still scalding in her chest, trying its best to well tears into her eyes.
“what is it?”
he asked after she’d broken eye contact with him for a time. imene had needed the privacy to blink down the urge to cry.
“i’m …ready to go back to oyakata-sama’s estate. but i was kind of worried of how much trouble it would be to ask if he would take me in a second time… i didn’t know if it would be rude to him,” she tried to sound as casual as she possibly could, asking softly, like it were nothing more than a passing thought over an inevitable eventuality instead of a conscious decision of hers. but from the look on kyojuro’s face, she may as well has torn a hole through him.
“has something happened?”
he was so concerned. kyojuro sounded so hurt and concerned that the prickling of tears threatened her lashes again. even with his aversion to her, she could not stand to see someone so sweet and kind be hurt. “no…”
“please, imene, if you were upset by anything that happened while i was away–”
“i wasn’t, kyojuro,” she insisted, pleading.
“are you unhappy?” he asked. and it broke her heart to hear just how willing he was to remedy whatever issue she may have experienced just by the tone of his voice, especially after just returning from a mission, “you don’t have to hesitate to tell me if I have failed to host you well.”
“you haven’t failed anything. i’m not unhappy. but I can–” dread made the words catch in her throat, but it was too late for her to retract anything now, “feel that I’m making everyone uncomfortable."
she waited for him to say something, but the flame hashira only looked at her in pained confusion, stunned and churning his brain to unravel her meaning.
"your father does not want me in your home, kyojuro. i’m a stranger to him—-in fact, I’m pretty sure he can sense that i don’t belong here,” she explained. he was faintly shaking his head, but even with the urge to protest, kyojuro could not deny that truth. “and senjuro–”
“he adores you,” kyojuro desperately interjected. her lips parted to negate it, but he continued before she could. and suddenly, there was a visible glimmering in his sunborn eyes, “he’s told me. many times, everyday we spend together. you…” his face softened from the accosted state she’d frozen it into earlier, and he paused his hurried explanations, “ease him. from our father. even though it is nowhere in your responsibility, you comfort him.”
“him liking me is just going to strain things between the two of them even more,” she shook her head, trying physically to mash the stress out of her temples, “that can’t be worth it, i don’t know how long I’ll even be in this time!”
“you would be surprised at its worth, imene."
her conscience screamed at her to look at him, and she refused for as long as she could… just for knowing how gutting it would be to do. decency prevailed over her to finally grant him enough to at least meet his eyes, though. and the way his soul cried out to her through them left her destroyed.
"i’m so sorry to have made you uncomfortable in my home. you needn’t worry about speaking with oyakata-sama, that is my responsibility, i will take care of it.”
he was resigned and sullen. It was almost impossible to tell with how genuinely he retained a positive outlook despite anything, but imene could see the sadness shining in his fiery stare, even with how radiant his grin was. she could also note how the sure grip of his sword had lessened to self-soothing strokes with his thumb at its hilt. “In the morning, I’ll make the arrangements for you. …I hope you believe me, imene, about senjuro. It’s been some time since he’s had …a loving woman around him. he isn’t likely to remember our mother well. what you’ve given with your presence is precious to him. priceless, I would say.”
he gave her an elegiac curve of his lips, and the water blurring her sight conquered her at last, dripping tears so heavy they fell straight to the ground, without a trace left on her cheeks.
“as for our father… he has been this way for a while. it is him. or, it’s what he has become, not a result of your being here. his callousness falls onto senjuro and myself normally, but I suppose you provided a new outlet for it …” he sighed, “it doesn’t excuse my negligence, but i will speak to him, you have my word.”
when she swept her eyes free of more accumulating tears, she felt kyojuro’s palms encircling her arms. it was a touch she had been desiring from the moment these feelings for him had begun to surface, yet when she felt it, she recoiled as if she were burned.
“imene,” he begged quietly. she still tried to keep her tone even.
“but you, kyojuro.”
confusion seeped into the misery soaking his expression, and his brow curled again to search for some hidden meaning in her words. his hands were away from her, though, the instant she showed discomfort.
“you’re the most uncomfortable around me of the three of you. you’re disgusted when i come close to touching you, you can’t even stand to be near me, in the same room, you’re always double checking to see if i’m up to something down every hall and in every room, and around your brother—-i can’t stay here and make you feel like that in your own home! especially when you’re out saving people and risking your life constantly! why would you even want me here if i make you so ill at ease—why would you want to come home to that kind of feeling after all you do!”
she hated how much heat she could feel under her skin–behind her eyes, in her cheeks and nose, at her ears. even more, she hated the pinched and congested whine her emotive state rendered her voice to, like some indignant child. it was humiliating to say aloud to him—-to verbalize just how awfully her self-regard had been eaten away, and to at last face it herself. now her cheeks and chin lay adorned with sheening wet streaks. she couldn’t hide any of it any longer. stillness followed after. not a word spoken, only the amplification of her breaths rattling and struggling to calm against rengoku’s measured silence.
when she could bear to raise her head again, imene could see him in what looked to be a deep epiphany. a terrible one. like his actions had only know processed into awareness for him, and had left him reflecting in horror.
“imene.”
he lifted his eyes enough for her to come into view, and his own lashes were starry now, blacker with the moisture accumulating at their base, in spite of the soft grin he wore, “i’m afraid i have to correct you. you said i haven’t failed in caring for you well. but i have done exactly that.
"would you come and sit with me,” he propositioned when she said no more. he’d expected nothing less when she could only look away from him with clenched, leaking eyes, so clearly pained that it ripped his heart to shreds. kyojuro was patient to await her answer, and held out his arm for her when she surprisingly accepted. imene had assumed that they would both share the space on the engawa she’d taken before his return. instead, he lead them to a more secluded area of the estate’s garden, on a stone bench that provided ample view of the night time, and allowed an unstifled breeze to cool them both that she greatly appreciated.
“i must apologize.”
“you did already.”
kyojuro glanced over his shoulder, hearing her delicate assurance. it surged through him, littering his skin in goosebumps.
out of consideration of how small their shared seat would be, he had crowded himself at the corner by her side. it allowed them both room for their legs, considering how widely his sat apart, but he could admit there there was a high element of shame that made it more difficult to face her. “yes, and it is not at all adequate for how i’ve hurt you.”
every time he spoke, sounding like he cared, she could do nothing but weep more. somehow, in spite of everything, his sympathy hurt more than anything else. and made her feel horrible for not being acceptable. “you can’t help how you feel, rengoku-s–”
“kyojuro."
his eyes met hers with stone solid conviction that she couldn’t understand. for someone who disliked her so palpably, he was intent on establishing friendly casualness between them that gave her a migraine trying to comprehend. his next words went far enough to bring a knot to her brow. "you’re right, i can’t. but to have acted on those feelings so poorly is shameful."
"acted on them poorly?”
“you were manifested in oyakata-sama’s estate. a refugee he deemed to have been brought here for divine reason. he is our leader in this fight we have undertaken against evil. he is the head of our organization, to be honored and respected.”
“it seemed that way,” her faint voice commented.
“yes. for that reason, and more i can’t explain now. understand, if my master says to me that you are precious, to be cared for, i wouldn’t ever dishonor that, nor you.”
now he’d given her her own shocking epiphany. it was slow to unravel itself with how meticulously he explained, frustratingly peeling away with the more he revealed to her in this less than receptive state that her mortification left her in.
“i wished to fulfill the role of your caretaker as best as i could. but as a hashira, i am frequently called away for extensive periods,” he gradually began to turn himself round, now diagonally beside her rather than perpendicular, “you are out of my direct sight for so long that i force you to tolerate my overcompensating once i return. i want you adjusted well, to not be overwhelmed or confused, or grieved with being alone. i wished to watch over you closely in case you were to need me.”
“oh…”
“and your nearness…” he began again, “imene, you were brought here under my protection. not only for me to oversee your healing wounds, but for your safe keeping all together. you are my charge. but i took this upon myself before knowing you—-i was not prepared for you to be so gentle and loving, and to possess warmth that i have not felt in so many years. you emanate affection–your spirit could even bring out playfulness in tokito-san. and your strength is one i have only seen in one other in my life."
she wanted to cry again, now. and was well on her way, hearing this perfect man speak of her so glowingly. out of nowhere.
"your peculiar beauty was something i was prepared to disregard. i am from a family of uncommon features; i willed myself to overlook the uniqueness of your eyes as many do mine, and to not be stricken with the comeliness of your hair, or with the beauty of your delicate complexion—-one i have never seen, and that i now will never forget. i convinced myself of it only being the allure of one sent from the heavens. i was mistaken, and then overcome."
"you—-” her voice broke, weighted with the sobs fighting to bubble out of her chest, “i don’t understand…”
“you are the most beautiful woman i have ever set eyes on, imene. my dreams could not even create anyone nearly as bewitching. and i swore to ignore it, until you showed yourself equally as beautiful in your soul.”

... You know, I was just thinking about Hua Mulan ChengQing AU. Hahah, ha. This movie is SOMETHING. Handkerchiefs are necessary.
oh I HEARD? but idk if i wanna see it. I’ve seen other things Liu Yifei (Mulan) was in and i don’t really like her?
NOTE: OKAY so there were some confusion!!! Before ppl get offended, anon and I are taking about two different movies. The one that anon is saying is good is Mulan (2009) an original Chinese movie BC I had been asking ppl where to watch it and received many inbox msgs about it. The Disney film is what I won't be watching for so many reasons, including bc I know the actress's work and is just unimpressed by her in general on top of all the other reasons.
Oh boy, but like...what IF it’s reverse!Mulan, aka matriarchal society. Where Jiang Cheng is the “sneak into the army for my family c”!Mulan and Wen Qing is the “I wanted to be a doctor but then the Fire Nation exploded in on itself”!Shang. And I worldbuilded for no reason...

WEN QING
Wen Ruohan was never supposed to be the Emperor, Wen Qing’s mother once told her, but the imperial court had allowed him to inherit because his late Empress Mother had no daughters to inherit the throne. As long as WRH promised to father daughters and pass on through them, then the Wen dynasty legacy would be preserved.
“What did his wife say, that her children must take his last name?” Wen Qing had asked her mother, wide eyed and curious. Her mother had shrugged and said, “Well some women don’t mind, I guess, especially if it meant her children would be heiress of the throne.”
Wen Qing had frowned at that. What’s so bad about children taking their father’s name, she wondered. Men may not be allowed the same liberties as women, may not attend public school or join the army or hold court with the Empress, but they were still children’s parents. Not all women agreed on this of course, but that was the way of their world.
Her father died of consumption some years after Wen Ning was born, but Mother never took a second husband or a concubine. Wen Qing liked that about her mother. Brave, loyal, true.
Wen Qing’s mother, Dafan-junwang, a distant relation to the throne, was a renowned marshal, hailing from a proud line of generals and marshals, trusted by the Wen imperial family as protectors of the realm, without fear of usurpation. The people whispered that Wen Qing had much to live up to, if she were to inherit her mother’s duchy and hold a command of her own.
Wen Qing never had much interest in war or martial arts, but she learned, trained, practiced and perfected her skills because she could never bear the thought of letting her mother down. In her heart (and in her free time), she learned the science and art known by father. He was a quiet man, a physician (quite skilled too), before he married her mother. He wasn’t what her grandparents would have wanted for their daughter, but Mother had been adamant.
Wen Qing’s mother hadn’t been good at expressing her love, but she did love her husband. Very much. Mother was only ever soft around Father, and Wen Qing only knew this because she’d seen them hold hands when they thought no one was watching.
Wen Ning, being the son of a wealthy aristocratic family, was destined to marry well when he came of age. Unlike girls, boys weren’t allowed to attend publicly funded scholarly schools or martial academies. Wealthy and noble families however were able to afford private tutors for their sons, so that they would know the four arts (play the qin, weiqi, literature, and art) and be elegant, competent husbands for their wives. If Wen Ning was competent enough, charming enough, and gave his wife daughters (because everyone knew it’s the men who control the sex of the baby), then she would be faithful to him -> at least that’s what their nanny said.
“How did they know, that men determined the sex of the baby?” Wen Qing asked her mother one evening when she turned thirteen and was given The Talk.
Her mother tilted her head and said as if it was the most obvious answer in the world. “My dear, women are the earth, we grow and birth life. Men are like the seeds. If you plant an apricot tree, the earth will nourish it and let it flourish, but the fruit will always be apricots, you will never have peaches.”
Once, Wen Qing had asked her mother if she could be a physician instead, if Wen Ning could take her place as general. Her mother had given her a very stern look and said, “No only is your brother of a sickly disposition, but you are my daughter. The duchy and my command can only be inherited by you. For your country, you do not have a choice.”
Wen Qing conceded, because she was good.
The days dragged on, and slowly it was becoming clear Wen Ruohan would have no daughters. Not only so, the sons he fathered were ill-mannered and haughty, unfit to rule. Wen Ruohan’s mind, too, was slowly leaving him, due to unknown reasons. The ministers of the court and notabilities of the peerage urged Wen Ruohan to take on the daughter of his cousin born of his maternal aunt, and to groom her as heir. This brought on much discontent from Wen Roohan’s two princes, who aligned themselves with lurking enemies from the north, and before anyone could mitigate the situation, the country was thrust into a full blown civil war.
Every bit her mother’s daughter, Wen Qing did not hesitate to mount her horse and ride off into battle. She had her duties and she would serve until her death.
Jiang Wanyin had a very pretty face - she would reflect in retrospect. Perhaps that was why she believed him when he showed up at her camp with a conscription missive claiming to be his older sister Jiang Yanli.
JIANG CHENG
The Jiang family was a wealthy merchant family situated southeast of the capital, in the province of Yunmeng. The current head of family is Jiang Ziyuan, known for her sharp business mind and sharp ways with her sword.
(the only reason i’m switching Jiang Fengmian and Yu Ziyuan’s last name is because it’s a matriarchal society, and Yu Cheng and Yu Yanli sounds way too awful as names, but Yu Fengmian and Jiang Ziyuan are actually not bad.)
There was a rumour that her husband Yu Fengmian of a Meishan Yu clan, had betrayed her with a wandering traveler from the pugilist world named Cangse...something something, and that he had fathered a son with her out of wedlock. If it were true, then by the conventions of the land, Jiang Ziyuan would have every legal right to divorce Yu Fengmian and send him back to his family to live out the rest of his days in seclusion, shame and repentance.
But when Yu Fengmian came to her with the little Wei Ying, freshly orphaned, Yu Ziyuan turned the boy this way and that, examined him for “abnormalities” and nodded. Then she summoned her son, and said to him, “Our manor purchased  some new indentured servants. This boys is yours from now on, he is your responsibility. Keep him in line, find some uses for him, or get rid of him.”
Jiang Cheng looked to his big sister, but his sister just shook her head. Not quite understanding what was happening, or why his father was bowed down on the floor, Jiang Cheng took his new “servant” and left.
Watching them go, Jiang Yanli then turned to her mother and said, “Muqin, if I may be so bold, I have an idea.”
Jiang Yanli was not the heiress that Jiang Ziyuan had hoped for. Though incredibly intelligent, Jiang Yanli was of poor health and not suited for martial training. Jiang Ziyuan had been quite troubled by this for some time, fearing others would cause trouble once Jiang Yanli inherits. However, she was also hesitant to train her son Jiang Cheng, even though he showed both interest and aptitude. It was not often that well to do families would want to take on a too “rambunctious” boy as groom for their daughters. Yet to leave Jiang Yanli without close protection...
“Are you thinking that boy...”
Jiang Yanli nodded. “Father denies being Wei Ying’s paternal parent, but surely tongues will waggle regardless. Mother, you are within your right to dismiss father, but he is still my father, and if not for me, think of A-Cheng. One day he will marry, and what family would want a son with a disgraced sire. Wei Ying looks healthy and strong; as I am unfortunately unable to train with the sword, mother may yet train him. Surely you’re not worried about his future marriage prospects. Perhaps it is better yet that he never marries, for he will remain close to Lotus Pier and serve at my side.”
Jiang Ziyuan listened to Jiang Yanli’s words and decided that her daughter made very valid points. Her relationship with her husband could never be repaired but she had her children’s future to consider.
And yet happiness would not last for long. Two months after Jiang Yanli’s sixteenth’s birthday, she received news that her mother’s private boat, which she used to inspect her properties, had capsized in a terrible monsoon storm, killing everyone on board.
After the news reached Lotus Pier, Yu Fengmian took his own life in the dead of night, leaving a letter stating that he had owed Jiang Ziyuan too much to repay, that though Wei Ying was not his son, he had kept secrets from her that he swore he would not reveal in this life. Now that she’s gone, he would keep her company in her journey to the beyond.
The Jiangs mourned, but they survived.
Then when the boys turned seventeen, war broke out over the lands, and the conscription missives arrived demanding one female from every household. Jiang Cheng panicked. Wei Wuxian had been sent to Gusu on business and would not return for some time. The military missive was time sensitive, so Jiang Cheng didn’t have another choice...besides it’s not like A-Jie’s matchmaking attempts for him had been all that successful...he was next to blacklisted anyway after his last debacle with the Qin girl.
Jiang Cheng decided that he could pass as a woman if he dressed properly and redid his hair, but his voice...he'd just have to pretend he could not speak. That way, no one would know.
WQ: “Who are you?”
JC *hands her his letter*
WQ: “Jiang Yanli? The Yunmeng Jiangs? Of Lotus Pier?”
JC: *nods*
Her subordinate, “I didn’t know Jiang Ziyuan’s daughter was mute, they only said she was of poor health.”
-
Luo “Mianmian” Qingyang finds out first.
Mianmian: *GASP and points* You’re a man!
JC: *covers his body* SHH!!! Turn around! Don’t look at me! *turns to look away*
Mianmian: *naked by the river ready for a bath but too shocked to move* but, but, but, how?? How did we not know????
JC: Mianmian - no- Lt. Luo, please don’t tell the Young Marshal! Please, I only came so my sister wouldn’t have to -
MM: Cowardice! It is every woman’s sworn duty to -
JC: My sister is of very delicate health. She won’t survive! She’s my late mother’s only daughter, if she dies... I’m expendable. I don’t mind being cannon fodder, please don’t report me.
-
JC shivering in the snow. “You said you trust Yanli! Why should Wanyin be any different?!”
WQ stood impassively over him with a sword at his neck. Then, she closed her eyes and turned away. “A life for a life. My debt is paid.”
---
JYL: *Proud* “A-Cheng helped secure the future of our nation. The adopted young crown princess was too young to rule without a loyal regent, and Wen Ruohan’s sons colluded with outside forces...it would have been chaos. Millions would have died.”
WWX *teasing* “Sure he brought home a sword, if you ask me he should’ve brought home a wife!”
---
JC, “W-would you like to stay for dinner - ”
WWX: WOULD YOU LIKE TO STAY FOREVER?
JC: Wei Wuxian! She’s regent now, be respectful!”
WQ: Dinner...sounds lovely.

House of Usher (1960), Inferno (1980) and Rebecca (1940)
"the gothic horror story that is cheryl blossom’s life.”
happy halloween!! the time is right to collect these meaningful s1 cheryl moments together and talk about the themes of gothic horror in her narrative.
gothic horror is a huge genre that originates from a style of literature of the late 18th century and on. some examples of famous works are: the raven, frankenstein, dracula, turn of the screw, wuthering heights, and the picture of dorian gray. gothic horror stories usually involve in some way the overlap of death and love, and a mystery that creates suspense or dread while presenting questions about morality.  the narratives punish and reward people, especially women, for how sinful or virtuous they are. there may be supernatural or spiritual elements or it may be fully mundane, but it’s always creepy.
items 1 & 2: house of usher is adapted from edgar allan poe’s 1839 short story with a few details changed to give it a romantic plot. in the film, philip, madeline usher’s betrothed, visits her in the decrepit isolated usher family home to bring her away for marriage. but madeline’s brother, roderick, forbids her to leave or to have kids and continue the usher line. the siblings (twins in poe’s original) suffer from a fatal illness that rod claims is passed down per the evil family curse. he wants the curse, which causes inevitable madness, to end with the two of them, the last of their family.
madeline abruptly succumbs and is entombed in the crypt. phil desperately fights against the crumbling house and her strange and controlling brother, looking for a way to understand the curse and her inexplicable illness and sudden death. he finds no explanation except that her death appears to have really been a cataleptic state from which she rises with superhuman strength, busts out of her tomb and goes berserk. she uses the last of her life to strangle her brother as revenge for knowingly burying her alive.
roderick’s guilt for the part he plays in his sister’s fate and the terror that he feels while waiting for her inevitable revenge can be compared to cheryl. her nightmare of jason clawing out of his casket to strangle her is a product of the feeling she later explains at his memorial - guilt and sorrow that she and her family failed to protect jason.
there’s more parallels: the familiar family dress code, and the landscape at large - in the film, the land around the house of usher has been literally poisoned by the family’s curse, generations of evil seeping into the ground itself. in riverdale, the investigation of jason’s murder lifts the veil on the darkness in the town and reveals the part the blossom family has played in the decay.
also at the end a storm or possibly supernatural forces burn the house down.
item 3: lol a very happy halloween to you specifically from that guy. i’m not 100% confident this scene is a reference bc nothing else about this film, inferno, lines up with cheryl or rd s1 (a bullet dodged tbh) BUT it is gothic horror and there’s enough here for me to gif and compare so,
‘girl wearing white has an underwater corpse scare while the audience shouts, what are you doing, don’t do that’ is pretty much the whole parallel. rose, the woman in the film, is not attempting suicide in an icy river and that’s not her brother. she’s. well, she’s looking for her keys that she dropped in a hole in the basement of her building that leads to a room filled with fancy furniture and water. i have no idea whose body that is. it’s just like that sometimes i guess.
this film is like if wes anderson had a gel-lit fever dream of a possessed apartment building populated with b actors, no plot, and a lot of cats that probably wished the american humane association was in europe.
also.... at the end an accident burns the apartment building down.
items 4 & 5: the film rebecca follows an unnamed heroine’s romantic remembrances of a time of uncertainty in her life. she moved into the manor manderlay as the second wife of maxim de winter following the death of his first wife, rebecca. the heroine struggles to make her new marriage work in a house full of the past.
rebecca’s personal maid and confidante, the creepy and manipulative mrs. danvers, has been retained as the head house keeper at manderlay. she obsessively preserves rebecca’s presence in the house and resents the heroine for replacing her.
at the end of the film, after a murder has been solved and all the uncertainties have been cleared, a revelation shows to danvers that her devotion to rebecca was not mutual.
so she decides to burn the house down.
listen, not all gothic horror stories end in a house burning down. just the ones cited in cheryl’s scenes.
it’s difficult to see in that gif - mrs. danvers carries a candle and approaches the second mrs. de winter asleep in front of a lit fireplace, then turns as she thinks about doing some arson. she would “rather destroy manderlay than see [the newlywed couple] happy there.” post-arson, she revels in the flames with fascination. the reference to mrs. danvers in cheryl’s actions is clear.
there’s also, at the point of the s1 finale, a big similarity between rebecca and the deceased clifford blossom: their mysterious deaths, the exoneration of a man through the revelation of their lies, and their influence on others from beyond the grave that is ultimately wiped out with fire.
another thing is, cheryl burns down thornhill “to start over” but also to punish her mother.
a prominent motif in the film is lesbian desire. this isn’t that unusual in the gothic genre which deals a lot with exploring and/or suppressing female sexuality. mrs. danvers’ obsession with rebecca’s attractive qualities is super suggestive. even the heroine’s envy of rebecca is suggestive of desire.
cheryl has been abused by penelope in many ways including, we later find out, being denied the wlw part of her identity. destroying the house where this abuse has taken place, the house which is an asset of wealth for her abuser, is a way for her to escape, get revenge, and begin to take back control of her identity.
ok this is so long. last point. these film references align s1 cheryl with antagonistic and/or doomed characters, not the heroes or survivors. but i think, after her ups and (very concerning) downs in s2, there’s been a shift in her character marked at the beginning of s3. the film rebecca begins with the heroine looking upon the burnt remains of manderlay in a dream and reflecting on the “strange days of [her] life” spent there.
at the thornhill pool party in 3.01 the camera pans from the burnt shell of the house down to cheryl who is also thinking about her past. she is again in parallel to the film but this time to the compassionate heroine. i wonder - will this be the direction of her development this season?
bonus: another rd character with significant gothic horror themes

Okay, so...
... Now that I have a clearer Raw I can pause...
LONG POST
Ryusoulger Episode 1 reactions! Aka, the episode that decided to come for my life.
In no particular order:
Okay, so maybe it’s a little ‘hm’ that Kou pilots the mech entirely on his own. But it’s not the first time anyone has piloted a mech alone--including non-Ranger allies. The first person who springs to mind is Commander Aya from Jetman. In GoGo V, the robot assistant Mint piloted the robot alone once. And besides, it’s only the first episode. We’ve got plenty of time for the others to get in there.
I’ll be honest. I knew the Masters were probably going to die. At the very least, I knew something bad was going to happen to them.
What I was NOT expecting was THAT.
Ryusoulger scores one for on-screen death and incineration.
First fight of the new Robo Suit Actor (I feel so bad I forget his name). Thank you for your service Kusaka Hideaki, I wish you all the best.
But let’s go back to the beginning!
Dramatic ceremony that apparently no one else is around to witness.
Wait, so if Mynasouls/Minusouls are already being made/Druidon already showing up, and just have never reached the tribe before... Does that mean Touwa and Banba have just been doing a really bang up job of fighting them off? I mean, I expect the stakes are raising sharply now, but... Could cause tension in the team if there’s a ‘the only reason you guys had a peaceful life for so long was us’ sort of thing.
Also, Kou having a little bit of prankster in him is super cute. Are you and Touwa going to get into prank wars that drive the others nuts?
Random fact I didn’t notice before? In the opening, when the others are flying all over the place and Banba is just sleeping? He’s holding two RyusoulKen. The boy is freaking holding his brother’s sword for him, that’s so cute.
I’ll see if I can’t use this video to get a shot of the pendant looking like it’s changing colours and put it at the bottom, okay?
It has since come to my attention by rewatching this that Mystery Scarf Person is standing next to a torch that looks similar to the ones used in the ceremony scene this episode, which could indicate that he is Gold. Or... Related to the tribe, at the very least.
But the most important question to ask as to whether he’s Gold... Does he has Chainsaw?
I am never going to get over that chainsaw thing.
Also looks like we may have Druidon we haven’t seen yet, which doesn’t surprise me. Tank dude is clearly going to be Kou’s rival, but maybe one of the other Druidon was responsible for what happened to Banba and/or Touwa’s Master? (assuming Touwa had one and wasn’t solely trained by his brother)
I’m loving that little shot where it’s Ui sitting alone and then the others come over to her and it looks like they’re encouraging her (well, Banba just stands in the back bc he’s a grump but also solidarity) and then they all look at the sky. I live for the implications that there’s going to be a theme of companionship in this series bc I LOVE FRIENDSHIP. I LOVE FOUND FAMILY. And given how they trio (and possibly the brothers, too) lost people so important to them at the start, I think they’re all gonna need it.
I like them cutting the logo free. I also like the way it looks like stained glass for a hot second before becoming the usual red and yellow.
Sentai mooks continue to be distracted by pretty lights and it remains their downfall.
Kou! Don’t break the camera!
Dan seems pretty fussed that Druidon showed up. But... If he knew that the other two had gone to fight them, shouldn’t he already know that?
Hey, look! There’re other people!
Aw! Kou is trying to be comforting!
And... Gets shoved into the mountain. I love these three.
Oh my gosh, he tries to tackle Ui, but she just bops away, I love her.
Well, we’ve found the source of the bananas.
I love Melt hiding the banana behind his back like it’s incriminating evidence...
I think Kou is looking to the other two for help here and they just abandon him. God, he’s so adorable, though, I just wanna pinch his cheeks.
Also that fraction of a  second ‘I got myself into this’ face right before the cut to commercial. XD
WHY DOES HE HAVE A HAMMER? WHAT DOES THE HAMMER SAY?
The Masters are on a nature walk!
No, I’m kidding, they’re probably on patrol or something. But it looks like they’re on a nature walk.
Wouldn’t it be funny of one of the other Masters, if they exist, was played by the Ichimonji of the KR NEXT films? Is he even still acting?
Not the ankles!
Do the Masters have other names?
Why does Tank dude being in the temple cancel their transformations?
What I love about this fight is that Master Red and Kou are clearly worried about each other. Red yells for Kou when he’s thrown, and Kou tries to protect his mentor. It’s cute!
Until tragedy strikes.
Is Kou ever gonna be able to hear ‘Tata Soul’ again w/out thinking of this?
God... It was a gut punch when Red got hit by those slashes, but I was not expecting Pink and Blue to get fire breathed.
Also, yeah, there were better ways to do that, but that’s always true w/ diving saves. Maybe they didn’t thank they could pull them out of the way in time?
The complete silence was a good choice. IS this the same director responsible for that scene in Build where Misora tells the others Kazumi is dead? Bc this reminded me of that. If so... Man, you do ‘characters losing someone indescribably important to them’ very well.
I’m still not entirely convinced we’ve seen the last of them. Maybe only in flashbacks or as spirits, but you’re telling me you hired Sailor Moon, Tuxedo Mask/Kamen Rider Ibuki, and even an alternate version of Hongo Takeshi/some other dude from Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon (?) to kill them off in one episode? After those press announcements? Maybe they were trying to cover up what was gonna happen, but I’m not convinced. I mean, maybe their previous parts aren’t that big a deal, but it really seems like the went for a bit of name-recognition there... Are they gonna throw that away after one ep?
I will not deny I was emotionally encouraging Kou to get up and kick Tank dude’s ass right there. You can do it, sweetie!
Tank dude gives a speech while Mushroom creature is greatly distressed in the background.
See above for my feelings regarding Kou piloting the mech alone here.
Also the first time I watched I wasn’t thinking about that I was too busy crying.
Also I guess Tyramigo does talk, but... He seems fairly... Well, he doesn’t talk much. He’s got, like, two lines. I’d kind of like a serious, more ‘stern’ red rex. Hmm... Maybe the personalities of the Kishiryu reflect the predecessors’?
So here’s the jam. Doe you predecessor have to die for you to be the ‘true’ inheritor of the RyuSouls? Did Elder know this? If so... You dickwad.
Kou giving Tyramigo pets on the nose was super cute. I think I would kill for Tyramigo.
Also pretty sure I would kill for Kou, he’s very cute and now I love this actor.
Still very distracted by the way the Elder’s wig does not match his beard. What the hell, costuming?
So here’s my question. Do the special coloured Souls absorb the souls of the Ryusoulgers who die while tied to them? Are gonna have an ep where the team have to go ‘inside’ them or, like, summon the souls out of them, AtLA style? Are we gonna meet the original Ryusoulgers at some point?
Okay, but... The Elder uses the word ‘nakama’ when telling the trio about Touwa and Banba? At least, I think he does... Doesn’t that usually have ‘friendly’ connotations? Makes it seem like the two are less straight up ‘deserters’ and just... I dunno, went through the apparently necessary rite of passage of having your mentor/predecessor die before the others and were allowed to leave? I’m confused.
I don’t know why we needed to transform here, but I love the dancing mechs.
Also they did do a ‘three swords’ version of the ‘swords of justice’ thing. I am literally going to start crying--for very different reasons than this time--the first time all five of them do it together.
Still sad I didn’t get to see my boys in the preview, but at least I know they’re coming soon.
Also still can’t get a read on whether we’ll be hiding our identities this season. I kind of like it when they do do that, it adds another layer of tension to things, but it’s fine if they don’t, too.
Looks like Pink is gonna be yeeting her boys.
I’m liking this so far and I can’t wait for all my children to get together.
On the ED: I live for the dancing mechs. I could spend hours analysing everyone’s reaction to the cartoon Soul meteors. That was adorable. Still don’t know why Banba has different dance choreography, but it’s cute.
Digital french toast and pancakes for anyone who read all that.
All in all, I’m enjoying myself. I don’t usually cry at shows, but I just... I wasn’t expecting it to go that far. This is someone who directed some of Build, I suppose. I think we’re in for more agony.
And I love it. XD
Okay, so... (Ignore my boys screaming in the background please--not the most flattering picture of Banba I know, but leave him alone he’s sad DX)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So... It’s definitely just the way it disappears, but... The other three colour don’t do that? So either it was just a style choice bc there’s only two colours on this side and three on the other and I’m overanalysing, or...
Also. I. I just noticed the water bubbles. Or are those meant to be tears.
WHAT DOES ANY OF THIS MEAN BUILD MAN?

Slipping Through Your Fingers
Characters/Pairings: established Mal/Evie, eventual Mal/Evie/Reader (Quim) Mal, Evie, really allll the characters bc it’s my longest Descendants insert, but for this part just you and the girls.
Tumblr media
Summary: Well, this is 103 and 104 and technically a tiny piece of the dramatic/confrontation reunion. I question if the emotional impact will be the same without the build up, but mayhaps it will make you invested/curious???
Word Count: 1.0k
Notes: I am using a sideblog that is empty and not tagging bc this is only for your eyes, so no need to reblog/like, etc.
Again, they only know you as ‘Shadow’ (which is reflected in their pov), but you in your pov know your name. The technically learn your name in 105.
This is slightly newer writing than the other...so yay???
- - - - -
“You have each other. You have Carlos and Jay along with any other Auradon friends you've made. Why get greedy?" "You know it's not the same." The sleeve of her shirt is bunched up so it is almost a navy blue sleeveless tank top now. Inked words form an elegant band around her right upper bicep that spell out what Shadow first said to her: 'I am sorry.' While Mal tends to cover hers', especially the words from Shadow, she is proud to bear the soul marks, even if one was more bittersweet than the other. They found her, so can't they just be together? "I have your words on my arm; we're soulmates," Evie reveals. Denying the pull would be much easier without such specific, incriminating evidence... Wanting to run her fingers over each curve and dip that composes the words to see if they are smooth, indented, or slightly raised crosses her mind vividly. Quim does not remember what she first said to Evie. The midnight black ink is apparent even from this far away, and yet it looks more like a bracelet that she would need to examine more closely to gain comprehension of the mark. But she can't.  She can't do this. Quim will make them leave, if she has to. Her eyes slide away from Evie's arm as she tries to summon a veneer of reproach to mask the curiosity. "Do we just live happily ever after in this scenario?" She questions, trying to infuse venom in her words by allowing mocking to suffuse her. Her chin raises as she regards Evie critically, knowing that she is likely immune to it given her mother's inspections, but it would still hurt by dredging that up. Asking them to leave is not working, so maybe making it the only option will. "You're wrong, both of you are wrong, and wasted your time." Evie shakes her head slowly, trying to ignore the pangs of hurt by maintaining her composure. She does not step forward or back, but holds her ground. "You have to have ours," she asserts, meeting the analytical gaze head on, because they are both trying to figure the other out. A scoff. "I can prove that you are wrong."
Shadow isn't bluffing. Evie's stance shifts as this is concluded, because there was conviction in the statement that causes her heart to clench at the possibility she never considered. Mal getting off the desk to come stand quietly behind her for support is thanked by linking their hands loosely. "Show us then, please." The brittle quality to Evie's beautiful voice almost causes her to hesitate, but this is needed. Baring her soulmarks to her soulmates is not something she ever thought she would be doing after all this time. The sleeve of her shirt is rolled up methodically to only expose the required amount of skin, before a leather bracelet is snapped off and set on the bed. Her hand is presented, though she keeps the distance between them since it is not necessary for them to be close. "See? It's different." There is no shock of black ink against her skin. A silvered quality to the words nestled along her right wrist make them look unnatural and more like faded scar tissue than a tattoo. 'Get away' stands out against her skin in elegant script, it is also cooler to the touch than the surrounding flesh. "Is that...?" Mal hesitates to finish the question. "No, it's Evie's, but they are the same." "Can I see mine?" Mal's voice is so soft and unsure, while Evie's golden brown eyes are still trained on the soulmark, taking it in like it is a mystery that must be solved. Did they build up their being soulmates? It feels like she just crushed some unspoken hope or dream that the two shared, which was the goal, but them being so affected is hard to watch. Denying the request is her immediate thought, but instinct is telling her otherwise when Mal is looking at her so gingerly, even if her eyes are a blazing emerald. It was always hard to refuse them... Baring the second soulmark is made more difficult by the injury, plus it is in a more intimate position that makes her hyperaware. Quim can't deny that Mal has an innate right to it. "Let me change, then yes," she relents, snapping her bracelet back on without a second glance. "Stay quiet." This is warned over her shoulder before closing the door to the bathroom. "M..." "I know." Arms are around her in a hug, before Mal can elaborate on what she knows, but it is accepted all the same. This is not at all how she thought it would go; this coldness is unlike what she remembers, but there had to be something that caused it. They both know the treatment by Alistair had to have had an impact, it would be stupid to think otherwise; however, now their bond is being cast off by Shadow as well like it is all in the past. There was no hope for a future. "It will be fine," she lies, attempting to be a source of strength. "It was silvered, like a wound...Like my words actually cut her." "We don't know what that means, we didn't even know what they were until Fairy Godmother explained." Evie does not acknowledge the counterpoint, still focused on what she just saw. 'Get away' was practically carved into the delicate skin of Shadow's wrist, so unlike the near royal worthy script that circles her bicep. Aesthetics aside, the substance of the words are eating at her. Tucking her face into Mal is made difficult by their height difference, but she still hides for a moment, using the dyed strands as a momentary barrier from the rest of the world. The door unlatching has her break the hold, but stick close to Mal. They both wait to let Shadow make the first move...
End Note: Guessssss where Mal’s words are??? <3 <--- hint.

To address comments on the GL quote:
“Star Wars isn't science-fiction and never was“: Yeah I was being sarcastic, as evidenced by the parentheses around “(not opera!!)” sandwiched by “written in crayon on a napkin“ and “Louis Spacegazer” among other things.
“there's nothing in the current lead-up that says Luke has lost his capacity for unconditional love“: K but what about in TFA when Han says that Luke blamed himself for the failure of his group of Jedi to the point that Luke disappeared on everyone he cared about w/o intending to stay in touch?? The same Luke who, upon having visions of his friends “in pain” who “will die if I don’t [go and rescue them from an expert in killing Jedi, much less in killing an undertrained apprentice like myself],” wouldn’t even deign to show up around Han’s death? I wouldn’t mind as much if Luke was stranded on Ahch-To and didn’t have any means of flying to his family’s aid, but for him to cut off any contact w/ his family (wonder twin powers included) for the entirety of his journey there in the first place? Luke didn’t deny his mental connection w/ Vader from ESB to ROTJ, and he knew very well the bloody extents Vader would go to capture Luke and make him Turn. He had visions of such extents. He lost a hand during one of such “extents.” Distance has also been proven to not be a question when it comes to Force bonds. So what reason does Luke have for rejecting Leia for years, even through Han’s death?
“...Merely that he is disappointed and feeling very guilty about misjudging Kylo so completely.“: First off, the GL quote is about Luke, Vader, and their relationship. That said, a lot of poor writing surrounds the case of Ben/Kylo, bc not only does the Story of Love Saving Vader Who Then Saves Luke (w/c is literally the OT, and in a broader sense the PT and OT as a whole) somehow
inspires a kid to be a mass-murdering slave aka the Vader before rescuing his son in a true act of power (love), but also
must be reconciled with the fact that the very character (Luke) who allows Vader to realise true freedom and power by believing in the good Luke senses in this dramatic cyborg swordsman edgelord is the same person who misjudges a child? “Misjudges completely???” To the point that he doesn’t see his nephew’s sudden slaughtering and massive heel-turn towards the Space Nazis? Because in the context of ROTJ, I wouldn’t see that coming either, unless in a meta sense where a Skywalker needs to take up the role of villainy again because Reasons(??).
“Not unlike his old mentors, Yoda and Obi-Wan, hmm?“: Second off, Luke’s understanding of the Light Side and thus Love is not like Yoda’s and Obi-Wan’s when the two were alive. GL clearly designed the PT Jedi to be flawed so that we can better appreciate ROTJ’s conclusion. Luke wouldn’t judge anyone like Yoda and Obi-Wan would. From the very beginning, Luke believed in Han’s goodness to help the Rebellion against the DS to the point that Luke was surprised when Han denied it. Then over the course of the OT, Han proved to be exactly that: good. We also have Luke’s relentless belief in Vader –– a belief reflected not by Obi-Wan or Yoda, but Padmé –– which leads to the very same man forsaking Darkness for Light. As seen in the OT, Luke has been furious and violent before, and Leia has been played as perpetually angry; it just speaks of bad writing for Luke to not empathise with anyone much less a child, and for Leia to compare her child to the man who tortured her, made her watch her planet blow up, and caused mental and physical trauma to 2 of the men she cared about the most instead of comparing her child to, say, anyone else. It’s unfair to Ben, who doesn’t have even half the reasons for Vader to do what he did.
TL;DR, no one in the ST or OT deserves the writing he/she got.
