BBU Community Days
@bbu-on-the-side * {Day 7: Details} What's a detail of BBU worldbuilding you always wanted to dive into? (Newly emerging professions, legal aspects, pet fashion, economic side effects, societal aspects, facility workplace ethic, history, safehouse organisation, deconditioning…) Do it now, and ramble a bit!
-
I touch on a lot of the things I think about in my own writing, because world-building is honestly so much fun for me!
I don't talk about religion much beyond individual people though, and so that is something I think about but don't write.
Like, my theory on this is that religious organizations across the board heavily disapprove of the system, with their logic being that this allows people to "escape consequences" of their actions in their life before signing up, and there are TV preachers on this universe's Fox News declaring that all must stand before the judgement of God, even if they were pets in life. "The Lord does not forget your sins, even if you do."
I think this makes for uneasy bedfellows between the pet lib movement's leadership and some church organizations. Both want to end the system but with different rationales behind it.
I also think some churches or religious groups run safehouses, halfway homes, etc. Some better than others. I think a lot of churches have "missions" where they go to "the streets" and try to convince runaways to come to their halfway houses. The kind of people who complain about how the runaways don't always seem sufficiently grateful for their pity and charity.
But I think there are plenty of churches who just show up, help, and provide support without demanding worship in exchange. People who leave backpacks with toiletries and some food in areas where runaways tend to congregate. People who just buy food and cook big meals, even when it's illegal to feed runaways. These are the people who know how to befriend someone and provide aid without pity. I see the Unitarian Universalist church being very much about that method? Not always perfectly.
Churches lobby constantly for legal restrictions on the system but in my BBU world part of the point is that corporations have so totally overrun everything that ANYTHING is legal if a billionaire pays the right senator off.
Nat gets most of her funding from Vincent Shield's various shell companies but also applies for a lot of grants. And I think many of those grants come from churches or religious orgs.
Jake doesn't want to ask for money from religious organizations because of his own lifelong resentment after his childhood church ignored, enabled, and eventually justified his father's abuse of Jake and his mom. It means he has to scramble for money more than Nat.
But, yeah. I think about religion in the USA in the BBU and how it would affect a lot of things, but I don't write much of that in.

okay you're gonna have to catch me up on this one, how exactly did noah happen? for that matter how are iron golems made in this world? i reckon it's a bit more complicated than four blocks of iron and a pumpkin
Oh this really shows how little I talk about certain characters that yall dont even recognize them 😌
✨Worldbuilding time ✨
"How are golems made?"
The villager family all have the ability to wield magic, some subspecies of villager just has more than the other.
(note everytime I say "Magic" i mean the ability to WEILD magic-- they can't do shit with out outside help)
Witches have the most magic in their bodies,
Villagers have so little that they can't do anything with magic, even if they tried,
While Illagers, depends on each individual person whether or not they should work to keep it.
Witches have so much magic inbedded in their genetics, that one witch is the equivalent of 10 villagers. Thats why villagers are only able to give life to a golem when there is 10 or so of them. And even then it takes a LOT of effort to be able to give life to one.
You only need one Witch to give life to a/multiple golems--when they specialize in it ofcourse
"How did Noah come to be? "
Sheldon after becoming a Villager offered his village some help by giving them golems to protect them ÛwÛ!
One of them tho! Came out much smaller than the others!
Sheldon has never really heard of a "baby golem " before, because- that would be frankly- a bit of a waste- if you wanna protect your village-- so he took Noah in as his son so the little guy doesn't get hurt û3û
Bonus question: "why don't the other villager types use golems?"
They do! They just use different kinds! Villagers have golems, Iceologers have snow golems, and Illagers have....*shivers* the vexes

Happy STS! Hope you’ve had a good week! I'm trying to learn about everyone's WIPs, so what is the thing that you currently want to talk about the most from yours? :)
Happy storyteller saturday to you! I've had an awful week, so I daydreamed even more about my wip and escaped into the fantasy world I've created. I don't want to bother you with the gay lovestory now, so I'll talk about something more serious regarding my worldbuilding. Read about it under the cut.
The most famous high fantasy stories (Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Witcher, etc.) involve a war, most times with the connotation of a racial war (elves against orks, wizards against muggles, dwarfs against humans etc). So naturally, when I decided to write my story in a high fantasy setting, I've thought about a brewing war between humans and magical beings. But I didn't want to make it about racism (or even antisemitism) because as a German, I feel like I have to be very sensitive and sensible with that matter. I just don't feel comfortable writing that topic.
The escalating fights that might lead to a war in my story should tackle environmental pollution and stealing of resources as the main cause for animosity between humans and magical beings. We are destroying our planet and I have been active in the Fridays for Future movement, and I am still passionate about saving our only planet. So this is a topic I feel more comfortable writing about in a high fantasy setting and also a topic that is incredibly relevant today more than ever. But which time should my wip be set in? Is it in the future, where earth is dying?
I've done extensive research and then it hit me: Environmental pollution as we know it started in the industrialization, when big factories started mass-producing items and there were no laws to protect the environment. So my fantasy story is loosely based of the industrialization. That choice requires more research about the historical setting and to be honest, I can't written some scene because I still have to do more research. My characters can still travel by foot (or in Enya's case fly around) and it is mostly set in a forest, so similar to Medieval fantasy setting. Just the possibility of travelling by train is great so my characters can move around my world more quickly. So far, I've only written one relevant scene from the pov of a 10 year old boy wo works in a textile factory and discovers a river spirit who looks like a mermaid in the river behind the factory where the poisonous dyes are flooding in. She begs him to help her because the river is poisoned and she is dying. So that is the fantasy part, but I also get to talk about how horrible child labour which is still happening today in many countries.
Long story short: I want to talk about politics and societal problems in a high fantasy setting and I think most fantasy does that, but I'm trying to take a different approach so readers think about these topics subconsciously while enjoying a gay lovestory with a slow-burn enemies to lovers trope. That's what my future readers sign up for without even knowing it.

OOO! So there's more planets? I'm guessing space travel is a thing? I'm guessing technology advancements are different per country though-
Space travel is NOT a thing actually, we just know it exists. Honestly Worldview inhabitants aren't really very interested in exploring the stars, they have a planet with a magic core. There's no real reason other than to study a bit of whats out there, but the universe is completely aware that there are bigger things out there, hell, even other planes of existence. But I think its because they're aware that there's SO much out there -too much, even dangerous stuff, they prefer to keep to themselves. If anything serious happens they have Gods that are more than willing to intervene, but having a planet that has people that can view other dimensions and the potential dangers....yeah no one is jumping at the chance to push space travel, especially since there's people who can create wormholes to visit the moon without the need of a rocket if they're really that curious.
The higher level of Gods tend to stray and wander around the cosmos quite a bit, but thats the only real mention of other areas I planned to reference, I'm far from interested in writing or even exploring the idea of a space odyssey so that part of the universe isn't a point of focus for me, but it'd be stupid to ignore at least the basics of it.

sci-fi: how exactly humans got their "first contact" with whatever aliens? And, did humans start to travel in the space for a reason (leave the earth in mass, terraform other planets, create an empire, etc etc) or just for exploration?
In my second setting, the one where humans have actually met aliens, it's the very far future and there's a few exoduses and fractured civilizations between contemporary humanity and earth, but the general understanding is that humanity just wanted to expand to have more living space and economic and industrial resource and development space, along with colonization acting as a sociopolitical pressure valve by giving malcontents somewhere to fuck off to.
The first alien contact would come some several centuries into the wave of development, kind of anticlimactically by discovering a race of crab-like creatures that were barely entering their Iron Age. Incidentally, the smuggling of alien artifacts, samples, and aliens themselves past the colonial authority's protective blockade gave rise to space's first true criminal enterprises, which would branch off from there into everything from further trafficking and smuggling to piracy, raiding and illicit weapons development and manufacturing. While mainstream society would lose contact with Earth and as a whole stagnate technologically and territorially, The latter criminal group would, over the course of a good several millennia, evolve into the Clans as we know them today

Introducing the World of Fire & Flight: Taddles and Taddlings
Have you ever sat by a peaceful pool of crystal clear water and studied what may be swimming beneath its surface? If you look closely enough in the gentle streams and brooks throughout the Shadow Forest, you may see the young taddlings or the fully grown taddles swimming along through the water.
Taddles are the fully grown version of taddlings. These slender-bodied amphibians possess features of humans, though predominantly have characteristics of fish and other water-dwelling creatures like mermaids and sirens. Featuring webbed hands and feet, taddles are adorned with fins and gills as they spend the majority of their time under water. With the ability to out leap nearly any predator, taddles are able to live in relative safety. Their young are not as developed as taddles and so taddlings look more like fish in appearance and only begin to take on more humanoid features as they grow into adulthood.
In the quiet moments of the adventure they have set out on, Nyla and Xander observe the world around them. While their adventures may not always be peaceful, if my main characters look hard enough in the rare quiet moments when they find themselves near a stream, they might just observe a school of taddles or their young in the crystal waters. See what you can find when you explore the world of Tenebris in my young adult fantasy novel Fire & Flight, book one of the Heirs of Tenebris trilogy coming July 2022!

You know what's just peak fiction?
Mysterious islands that pop up out of nowhere, like you can't go wrong with that setting.
It's naturally mysterious, offers a great natural way to keep the story and characters contained and is just overall a great aesthetic.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (Part 12)
A half-showcase of old ideas and also me giving them away to anyone who wants to use 'em and built on 'em.
Click here if you want a better explanation of that.
Next two-parter story, this time called Seven Birds. Unlike most of the other stories in this series, I don't actually have any plotpoints for this, just a vague summary, some artwork, some worldbuilding and a monster of a dictionary I'll be posting tomorrow in Part 13.
From what I can remember of the plot, it was about a group of young dragon who discovered an enclave of humanoid creatures living underneath their world, and the struggles to achieve peace between the two species. Lots of Wings of Fire vibes, what can I say.
Some artwork, followed by some dragon name worldbuilding:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The seven names of enlightenment and elemental ascendance.
The first name is the name of kin, and honours every dragon of your bloodline, all the way back to your elemental ancestor. This name is given at hatching, it's the most common name for a dragon to go by.
The second name is the name of youth, and honours one's past self. This name is earned when a dragon is ready to move on from childhood and continue their enlightenment.
The third name is the name of self, this name honours a dragon's true nature. This name is earned when a dragon decides who they are, and who they want to be.
The following three names are gained in no particular order, but are traditionally taken as follows:
The fourth name is the name of companions, and honours a dragon's friends. This name is earned when a dragon gains a circle of friends they can trust and rely on.
The fifth name is the name of the ancestor, and honours a dragon's elemental ancestor specifically. It is given by the ancestor after a pilgrimage to a location that will differ for each dragon, as well as a judgment.
The sixth name is the name of the elemental, and honours the other elemental ancestors. It is gained in a similar fashion to the name of the ancestor, except with the exception of the ancestor giving the name being different.
The seventh name and final is the name of the world, and honours the land. This name is earned when a dragon accepts their part in the world, as a protector and guardian.
Ascendance is the ultimate goal of enlightenment, with the dragon in question continuing to exist after the death of their physical body, dragon souls who cannot gain their seven names before death supposedly either cease to exist, or are reincarnated so that they might try again.

Not sure if this has been asked already or not, but how does the trainee recruitment process go? How does one go from being a free person to being a product of WRU?
Every writer handles this differently! But for me, people who come in willingly have a couple interviews with "acquisition counselors"/recruiters, who get a sense of health history, what is leading them to make the decision, what family might file a missing persons report will need notified, etc. In Jameson's case, he spoke to a recruiter for weeks by phone and email before committing to the process.
They will also be walked through the steps, heavily sanitized "We use a proprietary, painless chemical compound to erase memories created prior to acquisition. Then you get put into specialized one-on-one and group classes to ensure you learn the skills required, and you'll move on to your new life."
For the abducted involuntary walk ins... Well. They wake up already in the cell long before any memories are lost.

this is probably something answered or shown before, but what do villagers/illagers/witches/etc think when someone puts an ominous banner up on display, and the various reasons why (showing they're of that banner or framing up them up for show of power.)
Tumblr media
Like this y'know? (Also I'm p sure the player here (Awn) would be hunted for sport by illagers if this existed in your story XD)
It is kind of like Mounting a deer head on your wall to show a successful hunt or like--, have the skin of a bear for a carpet. Its just to show that youve encountered and killed them, and its somewhat like a warning to ilagers nearby. If a town is RIDDEN in it though, its been raided.
I imagine like.. Player placed a few on display at a town hall or something to show her victories and in a way show the villagers that theyre in safe hands.

Hello Lexi!
You mentioned before that your WIP takes place during industrialization (or its approximate). How do you think the story would change if it took place in the past? Or in a cyberpunk world?
An excellent question! I'll try to keep it short and for more details about my historical setting I refer to my previously answered ask.
I assume by "the past" you mean a Medieval setting? I think my wip would change in a way that makes it too similar to already existing fantasy books set in that time. These are probably writing that time period better than I ever could, because it's my least favourite time period in all aspects. The Medieval times were a set-back in human history, religion took over the world, especially Christianity and to be honest, as an agnostic I find it difficult to write about religion in a believable way. So how would my characters behave in a Medieval setting? I am writing queer characters and their lovestory and if my wip isn't in some sort of alternative universe, there would be no room to explore that. Also my characters would be less ambitious and passionate about what they want to do because the society back then was limiting your self-expression strictly.
Hard cut: my wip in a cyberpunk world? I would love to write a SciFi story set in a cyberpunk world, but I really don't know how that would mash well with a high fantasy setting. It would be interesting to explore the intersection of magic and technology and how that affects my characters. Just some random questions that would need answers to imagine this: Could you update your magical powers or download new skills? How cool would their outfits look? What kind of transport do they use? Do animals still exist? It has potential, not gonna lie. Overall, I'm happy with my chosen historical setting, it just makes more sense for the story I want to tell.

Me: Okay, I need to stat out this monster for the one-shot I'm running. I should be able to focus on this. I love making monsters!
Also me: Wait hold on I had an idea about the gods in my setting, I need to write it down or I'll forget it. It doesn't matter and it will never come up but I need to remember that the god who embodies the Feywild is currently taking the form of an eternally sleeping toddler this is important and my priorities are very healthy. Probably should write down how deific levels work at some point. No never mind I need to describe how Mechanus (god of Mechanus) fights even though I just shamelessly ripped off Nocturne's God design

I just realized I never posted the map of Nerenti and have been talking about Geography like you know where what is.
Tumblr media
This is Nerenti. Arnervath is where the three Kingdoms are located. The Mountain Realm, the Woodland Realm and the Swamp Realm. Around the core of the continent are three land masses inhabited by the Magil.
So now you have a map for all the geographic content I've been posting.
The names of the continents are written twice, once in our Latin script and once in the local script.

Fellow writers who come up with wild and/or complicated as hell worldbuilding! Share some of your highlights!
I'll go first:
Two major systems of currency that dramatically increase and decrease in value across the continent in direct conjunction with which particular major country is closer;
Magical person-eating eels who have their own entire society underneath a particular city that never becomes relevant because they think everyone else is frustrating and terrible, who have exactly one (1) ambassador to interface with the outside world but who decided that everyone else was (still) frustrating and terrible and now works as an assassin for hire instead of doing that and just sends the occasional trade good back home with their stipend;
Pseudo-electricity that works by summoning spirits from outside of the world to come hang out in your batteries
