Character Voice Tag
Tagged by @thatndginger!
Rules: Rewrite the line of dialogue from the person who tagged you into the voice of your OC’s! (You can include a short beat of action to help establish character if you want.) Pass on the tag with a new line of dialogue.
The prompt given to me: "Am I a joke to you?"
Isaac: "Laugh all you want, but I'm serious. And right."
Renato: "I'm a man of many talents, but comedy isn't one of them. So, when you're done looking like an idiot--I assume it'll take a while--come talk to me."
Dorian: "Laughing at someone isn't very nice, you know? I bet you wouldn't like it if the tables were turned." They beamed with the confidence of someone with an ace up their peacoat's sleeve. "Bet you wouldn't like it at all."
Kinslayer: The waves of menace rolling out of them leeched the warmth from the room, dimmed the glow from the lights, and stole the smirks right off of every face. Kinslayer didn't need to say anything.
Elfy: She brought up a hand for a single-finger salute.
Oleander: She tightened her fist. "Quit smirking or I'll give you a punchline you'll never forget, nerd."
If you want to play, your new line is: "I like you."

For the wip ask game, what about the "SilmAsTheHobbit" one?? Thank you <3
Hello there!
So there's a tumblr post that goes around every now and again that says something like Tolkien considered rewriting The Hobbit in the style of Lord of the Rings and someone else says, he should've rewritten The Silmarillion in the style of The Hobbit.
So this is a fun little attempt to do that - at least for the first chapter. I like to imagine that Bilbo got his hands on ancient elven works and decided to tell them to hobbit children.
First, you ought to know that there was the One, who was called Eru (but in Arda, he was called Iluvatar); and he was all alone before he made the Ainur. They were beings that came from his thoughts. Those that came after would call them "Holy Ones" but Eru simply called them “company” and for a time, their singing made him glad.
It's very fun to try to do the adaptation, but I don't know how much I'll get through. It is fun to imagine the Silm in brighter and more engaging language.
Thank you for asking!

“whenever” for the wip game please !!!
I had to dig deep for this one, but I found it!
From the Miranetra childhood friends au-
Whenever Anetra’s hand accidentally brushed against her thigh, or Anetra offered her a bite of food straight from her fork. Before the summer, that was normal for them.

Hi there! For the ask game, how about 7 and 26 :^)
Thank you so much for the @jasperygrace! I'm sorry for the late answer, these past weeks have been a bit crazy, but I'm catching up with all my asks now!
The Tag Game
7.     Standalone or series?
Oh, series, always! I seem to have a tendency to write long stories, be it in novel or comic form, and I don't think I've ever actually written any standalones so far!
26.  Favourite writing program
Tough question! I'm torn between Scrivener and Obsidian for the place of favorite writing program, despite some of the browser writing programs have a bit more practical at times.

🍿 - if you could turn one of your stories into a movie or show which fic would you choose? and 🤩 - does writing energise you or exhaust you?
Thanks for the ask! (From this game)
🍿- if you could turn one of your stories into a movie or show which fix would you choose?
I would have TSP be a TV-14 cartoon series any day of the week. I want it so bad guys.
If any story was a movie, It Was All Just a Dream, a story I've written in the form of a short story I plan to extend to novella length, is a good choice. Length wise. I think live action would be a good choice.
🤩 - does writing energize or exhaust you?
Usually energize. If I'm exhausted while writing it's not the fault of the writing. Sometimes I stay up too late because I'm in writing mode and it's hard to turn off.
Thanks for the ask!!

for the ask game
🎁 Have a piece of a WIP you want to share?
“Sometimes I hate how many ways our journeys are similar.” Legend commented after a long silence. “You, the Sailor, me. All of us who have the Old Man as our ancestor whether in blood or in spirit.” Legend went quiet for long enough Twilight thought the conversation over.
“Her name was Marin.” Twilight turned back at the quiet statement from Legend. “Like your princess, she was from another place, another world.” Legend sighed. “But after that adventure, the connection to her reality was severed forever.” Like the mirror. Twilight realized with a pang of sympathy. Legend fidgeted with his rings and bracelets as he continued. The action showing how much the Vet's feigned nonchalance was just that. “Farore knows it wasn't my first loss, it wasn’t even my second adventure but when I'd honestly begun to consider a life outside being a hero?  When I’d thought of settling down on that island with her for the rest of my life?” The Vet bit back a rather vehement oath as his voice cracked. Legend swiped at his nose and eyes. “I've personally met two of the Golden Three. Din and Nayru both owe me. And the Birdbrain is dating another freaking goddess. I won't let the powers-that-be separate us when this is over. I already promised ‘Rule.” And with that, Legend abruptly got to his feet and stalked off.
🦋 Which character is your favorite to write?
That seriously depends on the mood I need to convey or what mood I'm in. Trying to be the responsible one? Realizing my physical age doesn't match my mental age? Hopelessly lost in imposter syndrome? It's very easy to find Time.
Twilight tends to pick up the anxiety spirals or perfectionist habits because he just wants someone to be proud of him. Same dude, same.
Sky, oh this poor guy. Sky picks up when I'm not physically on my game. Tired, sore, drained emotionally... we're channeling expresso-depresso guy. I love him. I really do, but he's also easiest to just envelop in love and affection and he'll accept it so... get loved I guess?
Warriors is the actual responsible one when I write him. Time is physically older but Warriors was the older brother first. He's the practical, do-what-needs-to-be-done guy with experience wrangling fellow heroes but he's also a secret mess.
The other interesting one I've found myself writing is Wild. Now hear me out because I know everyone has their opinions but Wild is really nice to channel when you're on the other side of the situations I gravitate towards writing Twilight and Sky in. He is smart enough to see what's happening, but words are hard and empathy exists but so does social awkwardness and neither helps you support someone who you can actively see is having a hard time. So Wild.

4 and 5 for the Tolkien ask game?
- @kingkendrick7
Tumblr media
Hi @kingkendrick7! Thanks for the asks. I'm really looking forward to answering these! If you aren't following Kendrick yet, go check out his Writeblr Intro and About Me post! He's got demons and vampires and a writing club, oh my! P.S. If you want to participate in this ask game, take a look at the full list of questions here: Tolkien Ask Game
I had a hard time distinguishing between these two questions, so I answered No. 4 for the research/expertise that went into creating characters for The Sorcerer's Apprentice and No. 5 for the research/expertise that went into worldbuilding. I hope this division keeps with the spirit of the original asks! Also, I apologize in advance for the enormous info dump you are about to receive lol You have summoned my inner nerd. Sorry, not sorry ;)

4. What are your elves and dwarves? As in: something you studied or know a lot about, something you can geek out about, etc.
✦ Cucufate: (pronounced: Coo-coo-fah-teh)This is a secondary character I haven't spoken about much because I keep going back and forth on some of the minor details. Generally speaking, he's a monkey (a Colombian Night Monkey or Aotus Lemurinus) who lives in Valeriano's mansion and befriends Altaluna. His character is based on two figures: the ancient philosopher Socrates and Bartleby from the short story Bartleby, The Scrivener by Herman Melville. What I wanted to do with Cucufate is find a way to have an animal speak without necessarily resorting to a 'human' voice (a voice that furthers our aims, mimics and thus elevates our culture, clarifies and informs etc.). This is where Socrates and Bartleby enter the picture. They both provide a language model that subverts standard communication. For instance, despite being the primary character in Plato's Dialogues and one of the most famous philosophers of all time, Socrates makes no positive or prescriptive claims (thou shalt not blah, this is that etc.). Instead, he talks in (flattery &) questions, undermining any certainty his interlocutors might feel by prodding and probing their knowledge of x, y & z until they are forced to reveal their ignorance (this is known as Socratic irony). Socrates' speech is thus a kind of anti-speech. If it spotlights a topic, it does so only to reveal the immensity of the darkness that sustains it, its lack of substance. Indeed, whenever Socrates opens his mouth, he widens the abyss that will eventually swallow his interlocutor's thoughts and beliefs whole, and terminate the discussion (silence). Hence, Socratic dialogue successfully humiliates and confuses us. It strips us of that very human arrogance, our intellectual bravado, so that we too can become wise: so that we too can share in the wisdom of knowing that we don't know. Doesn't the natural world do the same? Isn't that precisely the horror of climate change? The root of the unease we feel before our uncanny valley primate cousins? Bartleby, on the other hand, taps into the ambiguity of certain language formulas. His signature phrase "I would prefer not to," which he repeats whenever he's asked to do his job, expresses a hypothetical that... never seems to go anywhere? It's the Schrodinger's Cat of phrases, simultaneously dead and alive; he'd prefer not to, but... will he or won't he? Yes. The ambiguity, the inaction of it, dumfounds and incapacitates his employer. Bartleby's speech thus provides an example of a language that resists, confounds rather than clarifies, and complicates rather than simplifies. Like Socratic irony, Bartleby's masterful use of the conditional and modal auxiliary verb "would," disrupts the status quo. Because Cucufate's speech pattern draws from both of them, he becomes an effective helper to Altaluna; by engaging with her, he counteracts the temptation to think along the lines of a simplistic, "heroic" fascism (good vs. evil, light vs. darkness, us vs. them), and forces her instead to adopt a more nuanced stance, capable of aptly handing contradiction and ambiguity.
✦ The Secret to Altaluna's Success: I can't really explain this one without explaining the magic system. Since I don't want to give anything away before the big reveal, all I'll say for now is that Altaluna's strength as an individual and as a magic-weilder (although that's the wrong word, really) can be understood in reference to "La Conciencia de la Mestiza" (Chapter 7 within Borderlands) by Gloria Anzaldúa.
✦ Valeriano's Cruelty: Partially inspired by The Imp of the Perverse by Edgar Allan Poe (and he would know, wouldn't he, what with his cousin being 13 and a literal child when he married her). If you haven't read it yet, I couldn't recommend it more highly. It's very disturbing. To summarize, it tells the tale of a man gripped by the so-called "imp of the perverse," a self-destructive tendency to do exactly what he shouldn't precisely because he knows he shouldn't do it. A large number of Poe's characters take this tendency to the extreme. Valeriano does so to a lesser degree. Like Poe's characters, he enjoys doing the wrong thing because it's wrong but, unlike them, he won't put his life or his career at risk to satisfy this urge. So, who ends up suffering from Valeriano's perversity? Easy. Only those people who have the misfortune of being beneath him on the socio-economic ladder i.e. only those incapable of defending themselves against him. In this way, I've also written Valeriano as a critique of Western philosophy's stance towards 'evil.' From Plato to Kant to Arendt, philosophers have been adamant that people do not commit heinous acts because they derive pleasure from them, but rather because they lack 'the good' (respectively: knowledge of the 'idea of good' for Plato, a correct understanding of the moral law -the categorical imperative- for Kant, and, finally, the activity of thought for Arendt). 'Evil,' in most of Western philosophy, is always an absence of 'the good'. It is not a thing-in-itself. It has no positive, independent existence (the same goes for ugliness, but that's another discussion). Like Poe with The Imp of The Perverse (and Dostoyevsky in Crime and Punishment), I'm using Valeriano to disagree (and to show JUST HOW MUCH I disagree lol).
✦ Valeriano's Attitude Towards Truth: Partially inspired by contemporary French philosopher Michel Foucault's account of parrhesia in his lecture series, The Courage of Truth. Basically, parrhesia is a type of ancient Greek truth-telling that implies courage because by participating in this speech act both the truth-speaker and the truth-listener risk their lives; the speaker by possibly incurring the all-powerful wrath of the listener, the listener by risking the possibility of being made profoundly vulnerable by the speaker. Valeriano's exchanges with Altaluna's father, Peregrino, are an example of a failed attempt at this form of communication since Valeriano rejects any attempt at truth-telling from him. Indeed, he exiles and punishes Peregrino and, by extension, Peregrino's family for daring to confront him with his own monstrosity, which he refuses to acknowledge. By the time The Sorcerer's Apprentice commences, Altaluna has been thoroughly warned of Valeriano's inability to be a truth listener, and so, although she offers him opportunities for parrhesia, neither he nor she fully engages in this act as Altaluna is unwilling to risk her family's well-being a second time. This has two further consequences for the narrative. First, it means that while Peregrino is 'free' because he was able to define himself within the speech-act, namely to autonomously determine himself as a subject of a certain kind in relation to the truth, his truth, and to act accordingly; Altaluna's sense of self and her field-of-possible-actions are entirely dominated by Valeriano. She is who he says she is, what he allows her to be. She exists only between the limits of what he's willing to tolerate. This gives us an idea of where the plot has to go in order for Altaluna to reach the peak of her arc, aka. a moment where she wrestles free from underneath Valeriano's power and participates in a fully successful act of parrhesia. However, since we've established that Valeriano is incapable of being a truth listener, then it's clear that in order for this moment of liberation to finally come Valeriano and Altaluna's relationship needs to be turned on its head; Valeriano needs to become the truth speaker and Altaluna the truth listener. Furthermore, that the parrhesia has to be successful implies that Altaluna is going to have to hear something very hurtful from Valeriano and not abuse the power she has over him to punish him for it (as he abused the power he had over her father, Peregrino). Finally, and this is the second point I wanted to make, this reversal between Valeriano and Altaluna provides a commentary and critique on the efficacy of parrhesia in undermining (certain degrees of) domination.
5. What are your Middle Earth languages? As in: something you have expertise in due to a career, a hobby, something you love, etc.
✦ The Magic System: I'm actually not going to say too much about the magic system because I don't want to give anything away before the big reveal. For now, just know that the mechanics are equally inspired by contemporary French philosopher Maurice Merleau-Ponty's 'Ontology of the Flesh' as contained in his article Eye And Mind and his unfinished manuscript (published posthumously), The Visible and the Invisible, which I wrote my BA dissertation on; and Philosophy as a Way of Life by Pierre Hadot, where he argues that the true product of philosophy is the philosopher themself. It is also heavily influenced by Cunning Intelligence in Greek Culture and Society by Marcel Detienne and Jean-Pierre Vernant, which just so happens to be one of my favourite academic texts of all time (and a fantastic read if you like Greek mythology).

Im not gonna lie, I, had to, google what that meant - REALIZE THAT IT'S JUST AN AUDIO BOOK UHM- Honestly I never really ever gave that any THOUGHT?? I'd be more into the idea of like, a comic rendition of one and that being dubbed instead of like, an entire reading - I'm kind of like "eh" with like Audible audiobook readings to begin with so--

Happy STS! Got a wild one for you this time - which of your OCs would kick someone into traffic in a street fight? Who wouldn't, and why?
I think it says something about my characters that I didn't have to consider this for a long time lol.
Short answer: All of them, but for different reasons.
Long answer: There are two major categories here. The first consists of characters who would do this because they believe in taking every advantage in a fight. The second is made up of those who would only do this for A Very Good Reason/In the Heat of the Moment.
Characters like Renato, Ollie, Kinslayer, and Noose belong to Group 1. They would shove or kick an opponent into traffic without hesitation and think nothing of it. They'd do so because they're trained killers. Whether they're acting under orders or doing it for a single corn chip doesn't matter. Only winning the fight does.
In Group 2 we have Isaac, Dorian, Elfy, and assorted less terrifying figures. The look on someone's face right before they disappeared under the wheels of the first vehicle would haunt them forever. But they'd kick an opponent all the same for a few related reasons: a) to survive, b) to save the life of someone else, c) and/or they know becoming a road pancake would only slow the opponent down, not kill them.
My characters either get shoved into traffic or live long enough to push another onto a busy street. Law of the urban jungle, man. *takes a drag from a cigarette while staring broodily into the sunset*

🖋️"what inspired you to write your WIPs?"
📖"what has surprised you about your WIPs?"
💻"what perspectives do you write in?"
🖥️"what types of writing do you do?"
❤️"what are your favorite scenes from your WIPs?"
😭"what are the biggest challenges writing your WIPs?"
Hello! Thanks for the ask! (From this game)
This is a lot of questions! Haha super excited though. Sorry I took a bit to get to this. Long of course so it's under the cut.
🖋️"what inspired you to write your WIPs?"
The Secret Portal
TSP's inspiration can be traced back to the Rainbow Magic series. I was obsessed with these fairies as a kid, and at one point role played a story with my stuffed animals on two girls discovering they were fairies. In fourth grade during a creative writing unit, I thought back to this story and decided to change fairies (since I thought I was too old lol) to "people with powers" and I added a portal or something. It has since evolved so much and I don't know where the inspiration has come from. Most media I consume is somehow ingrained into my writing style.
School of the Legends
SOTL was inspired by my love for fairy tale retellings. Whatever After and The Land of Stories stick out the most if I'm being honest.
📖"what has surprised you about your WIPs?"
The Secret Portal
TSP has surprised me by how far it's come. How interesting I find it. How it keeps evolving into something I'm more and more proud of. Smaller stuff, like Lexi deviating completely from her original purpose of a self insert, Gwen becoming more important than I thought, how natural the chemistry between the characters has been, my many ah ha! Moments. How much I've grown as a writer and how amazing it is that I can track my growth across over a decade of my life. The positive reactions I've received. How much it keeps getting better. I love it more every day. Hard work is paying off.
School of the Legends
SOTL is not that far in development but I'm surprised by how fun it is to think about. How hilarious the first couple chapters have been overall. Also, I really like a lot of my ideas for adapting fairy tales and stuff.
💻"what perspectives do you write in?"
The Secret Portal
TSP is told in a multi POV format. One major theme is perspective and the inner workings of each character, and I honestly can't imagine it in third. It's taken a lot of work, and the character voices are becoming increasingly more distinct. There are chapters without one focal character told in third person.
School of the Legends
SOTL is told completely in third person, with one focal character per chapter. I think most of my projects from now on will be third so the exhausting and diligent work from TSP doesn't have to be repeated. Only two other works I have planned feel fitting for it anyway.
🖥️"what types of writing do you do?
I obviously do a lot of original fiction, primarily sci-fi and fantasy. Only one idea that I haven't completely scrapped is realistic fiction, and that will likely stay the same. I love realistic fiction, but find compelling narratives hard for some reason. This idea doesn't even have a plot so that's also telling.
On the side, I do a lot of media analysis. I love reviewing movies and shows and analyzing the crap out of them. Not only does this help me process and document all of my opinions but it also gives me a better understanding of the property, writing process, and story progression that leads to my development as a writer.
❤️"what are your favorite scenes from your WIPs?"
The Secret Portal
Favorite scenes aw man. For TSP, the grilled cheese sandwich debate has a special place in my heart. It's unfortunately very long so obviously I'm going to have to cut it down, which I'm working on, but I'm keeping it as is. Also, the intense moments that I'm proud of stand out. Ash getting manipulated, Noelle and Carmen arguing, Jedi's entire backstory, etc. I become super proud of myself for being able to get invested. Any scene with Robbie and Akash honestly.
School of the Legends
For SOTL, it's not that long, but I love the opening scene for Tierney's chapter electric shocking his brothers. But I am also proud of Úrsula's chapter for being pretty nuanced.
I guess both the wholesome shenanigans and also heavy scenes.
😭"what are the biggest challenges writing your WIPS?"
The Secret Portal
Biggest challenge for TSP is honestly world building. I can figure out character and plot enough with hard work but my brain hurts from world building. Which kinda sucks because I want Alium to be distinct. The good news is, it's coming along, and I like the tiny little processes that I make over time. Little things add up, and Alium is becoming more and more of its own thing. I like that, even if it's hard.
School of the Legends
For SOTL, it's stringing together a narrative and structure. I have a lot of characters and plot ideas but can't connect most of them. There are just so many fairy tales. I have no idea how I'm going to work with this. Maybe just making it a string of one-shots with an overarching plot could work. I dunno. We shall see where it goes.
Thank you so much for all the asks!!! This was so fun! Hope this was a good read!
