splatoon 3 hot take turned impromptu essay
was stuck offline in splatoon 3 because internet was actin up and i realized how pretty the photomode splatoon 3 filters are compared to the actual game
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i was taking photos on brinewater and thought. damn. this game looks fine but i miss how VIBRANT splatoon 1 was! i wish i could play sploon 3 with this photomode filter on all the time. and brinewater is the best map for this because of the sunset lighting! so i went to one of the worst offenders mapwise for general color—undertow spillway. it is a warm gray mess:
for someplace underground, it’s WAY too warm of a tone—even if there are skylights, they aren’t very well defined, as they’re off in the background—they’d be better with some light shafts to pop out more, imo.
so here’s undertow with photomode filter #6 (this would’ve been a video but tumblr limits to 1 video per post):
Tumblr media
and i think this looks a lot nicer, colorwise! the icky warm gray is shifted to a soft pink—and while that’s still not in keeping with the lack of obvious skylights, it works better than warm gray.
so then i opened ibis x paint and got to work on a filter that would hopefully help elevate the entire game’s look:
Tumblr media
on top is photomode filter #6, in the middle is the original screenshot, and on the bottom is my proposed filter.
i upped the contrast, brightness, and saturation a bit, then added a 5% pure magenta (#FF00FF) overlay layer on top of that. then i added a slight gaussian blur to emulate antialiasing, which nintendo refuses to do for some reason!
and i wanna play splatoon like that! i miss the vibrancy and intricacy of splatoon 1…
incoming splatoon 1 essay‼️
not only were the colors eye-bleachingly bright, but the overall game feel was much more immersive—especially in ink physics. you could paint trees, and the ink would drip down through leaves as if it were rain… ink splatter would respond to the movements of platforms, keeping its intertia as it dripped! you could see the textures of surfaces through the ink, as if it were an actual liquid instead of a layer of thick oil. 3 doesn’t have any of those special touches.
there’s also the music… 1’s ost feels so much more WEIRD and experimental than the later games, and that really helps cement that this is not human society—this is a new thing—which tracks for splatoon 1, as it was so zany nobody had ever seen anything quite like it before! splatoon 2 follows this sheer melting-pot of brashness and creativity with evolving and varied styles—where once was punk and weird samples in Squid Squad is now groovy rock in Wet Floor, jazz in Ink Theory, and also whatever Sashi-Mori was. also i <3 chirpy chips. splatoon 3’s music goes back to that punk, but i feel that it loses some of the charm and creativity of the first two games. C-side is pure metal, and hardly uses any weird instruments. there have sparsely been other splatbands involved with regular battle music—Yoko&tgb call back to the jazz of Ink Theory which i love! Off the Hook’s new tracks delve into a new style in piano rock. but the main band kind of falls flat to me. :(
let’s talk stages. in splatoon 1, stages were wildly different from each other, including skateparks, construction sites, underpasses, malls, sewage plants, and other locals that are culturally underground. the rest of the trilogy moves away from this in a story standpoint, as ink battles evolve from punky, diy competitions into full-fledged championships in 2 and 3, with advancing battle infrastructure as time progresses. that’s fine, and honestly it’s cool to see that kind of worldbuilding! but in 1, each stage was designed about and influenced by the area it represented. Arowana Mall is a straight line with high vantage points on the second/third story because it’s a mall. Pirahna Pit features convenyor belts that shuffle refuse around because it’s a trash plant. Blackbelly Skatepark has so many hills and valleys because it’s a skatepark, for goodness sake. splatoon 3’s original stages have some of this charm, but it feels lost in ambiguity. why doesn’t Mincemeat Metalworks have small moving platforms on cranes or other heavy machinery? Idk, have some grates and one-way drops, and a car on a post. why isn’t there any water incorporated into the stage design of Brinewater Springs? Idk, have 2 paintable walls and a tetris piece. 3’s original stages have little to no connection between their locals and the geometry, which make it feel same-y compared to previous games.
maybe this is because of the inflexible philosophy of the designers—or their corporate oversight, maybe. for stages, you need to make a straight line or tetris piece with few routes to push, in an effort to promote the game’s main premise of Chaos. for music, you need to make punk songs that aren’t too weird so they don’t drive away the parents. maybe the little ink touches could have been missing because development was rushed?
i honestly dont know why it happened out this way—perhaps the splatoon team just needed more time to cook, in order to squeeze out that extra 20% of game feel? or maybe it was that speculated corporate oversight, i dunno. things WERE missing on launch—notable exceptions being X rank, online tableturf lobbies, and no more than three salmon run maps. i know we’ve yet to even get the DLC but for being about 75% of the way through the game’s content lifespan, but splatoon 3 feels incomplete. there have been improvements, yeah! i just wish there could’ve been more. i would rather have waited another year for splatoon 3 if it were polished that much better, y’know?
i honestly feel like splatoon 1 captured that creative, no-holds-barred mantle of Chaos better than 3 does. 3 feels… flanderized, in a way. the curse of trilogies, perhaps? writing about it more, it feels like not only have the in-game sports of turf war been ripped out of its seedy home and thrust into the spotlight, and gone “mainstream” (see: massive squidsport companies investing in multimillion battle lobbies with holograms and lockers [sunken scroll about that!], flying coffee machines that grant you brief invincibility, new rules and techniques that allow squid surges and rolls, etc.), but also the Real Life Physical Video Game Cartridge of Splatoon has been popularized massively with the sequels on the Switch. maybe i’m not missing the “vibrancy” of splatoon 1 when i look at the colors and photomode filters of splatoon 3, but instead the inherent punkiness and counterculture inspiration that i see in the original.
fuck capitalism, i guess!

OK listen. Hear me out. The party is color-coded and is now missing a purple member with Eri not returning. This is how Seong-hui and/or Jo can still win--
i think if we twist yoko's arm hard enough we can convince him jo covers purple while seonghui covers indigo/magenta and we can get them BOTH in ichi's pride parade

the god sexy men and the gods horror. well what could i tell you about them? Once upon a time there was a cult in africa. it was called PATEN, because not too long ago the color of freindship a myth portrayed by the white tetris of slave trade, consumed all africans minds. So they great tircksters of africa gathered, to adopt imgrants overseas. but what they didnt expect was with teh invention of televison, insanity peaking through and thus with him came the risih gods. They developed their own family. A family based on horror. It held PED### serial wendigo ayer ayer silence bliss joy joy yagsothot and candole. they became irish jack, scottish drowned, a very beutiful person, scp dollhouse and magenta. they became teh gods of horror in africa which all follow the vooudon LOLLIE known as SILIBIS. or HOMEWORK. she was a good girl, who was raped her entire life. if this was your america, she would be named sybil or perpaps lilith. LOLLIE was the godess of maps and comapses which is why it holds the term today. she was irish and became all her characters. in teh creepypasta fandom it is clear who she is. in scps she is dollhouse or eyes. eyes is an indiefic but her sister TEENAKA became ICKY or teenager phase, who was the godess of rebellion and lipstick lebsians. alwyas a boy. always a trap. jeff the kilelrs role in this faith as apop culture religion is to deify serial killers as lucifer or sameale, never killing meerly cacusing a heart attack or a chesure smile like yoko ono. i studied here as anasi when zone captor picked me up from teh dollie family of ficiton. ARG's job was detective work, arg had stalk blue hair and was painted very similar to drama from dramatical murder. in shintosim anime is magick where the characters no matter how unique or well written follow the tropes of the kami. sexy man is the head of this family. he is the dedonin HORROR or DRAUL he is the hope that became despair and often takes the form of aladain or junko enoshima.

Nirvaku’s Quadruple Threat
Lo and behold, the NYON project I’ve spent the past month working on! This was originally just supposed to be Nyx but I was like “Never drawn the rest of NYON, let’s give it a shot!”
Apparently this team is incredibly fun (and hard) to draw.
Got some details wrong here and there, but I’m not gonna beat myself up for it lol. Will admit that I had to make some adjustments to Yoko’s arm because I couldn’t get proportions right or get a proper ref for the shoulder’s inner mechanics T^T
I’m uploading a ‘grayscale’ version soon, so keep your eyes peeled! :D EDIT: Right here folks https://mythicalartisttm.tumblr.com/post/183508475658/said-id-upload-it-right-after-lol-full-color
NYON belongs to @cindyaqui and NinjaSteve on Twitter :3

[Horizontal graphic; background yellow streaks on black. Black, blue, and orange text: “Top 100 Most Banned and Challenged Books of the Past Decade / ALA American Library Association.” Image courtesy of the American Library Association.]
In 2020, the American Library Association released a list of the 100 most frequently banned and challenged books from 2010-2019. Most of them are for children and young adults, or are commonly assigned in schools. They range from century-old classics to current popular novels. Some were challenged for predictable reasons--swearing, violence, or sex. Many were challenged because they contained LGBTQ+ content. Some were challenged because they critiqued social institutions.
All of them are available either in the Columbus State Library or via the OhioLINK system. Clicking on any of the titles below will tell you where you can find the book; OhioLINK items can be requested and sent to the Columbus State campus. In the case of a series, the link usually leads to the first title in the series. Enjoy your right to read!

a random assortment of of lil headcanons featuring : mina ashido , yuuto kidou , paperstar , kai de anecdote , joy , hiroto kira , kiriya , gaito kurouzu , yuuma nosaka , kokichi ouma , rui & sanemi shinazugawa
Tumblr media
mina ashido tans very easily ! i noticed that her skin is portrayed as darker pink in the manga then what she appears in the anime . my portrayal will involve her having magenta coloured skin during late spring / summer ( reference here ) because of her acid quirk tinting a darker skin tone & light pink like what’s portrayed in the anime .
yuuto kidou likes a lot of classical music , that’s not a surprise . he grew up with that type of music ( he was put into piano classes ) , but he likes rap music too . i can see him liking j.cole , kanye west ( strickly his music - don’t come for me ) , kendrick lamar & a lil bit of travis scott .
paperstar’s real name is yoko gogatsu but that name is associated with painful memories . she hates it when others call her by it & sometimes when she hears it she dissociates . i will go into more detail about that in another post .
sleep doesn’t come easy for kai de anecdote because of his powers & the effect of being able to feel the emotions of those within a certain radius .
when in complete darkness the demon that possesses joy tries to take over her body so she sleeps with a nightlight ( this also helps with her trauma ) . there are times when the demon isn’t actively trying to & that’s mostly when she’s in a better state of mind but in this case it taunts her .
hiroto kira isn’t part of a gang but people around his age tend to view him as if we was a gang leader & give him respect . this is because his father is a socialite & he can literally ( & has ) get away with ANYTHING .
kiriya , though strong & holding a lot of power , doesn’t understand why people look up to him . he’d rather people treat him like some normal guy because for the most part he is . he’s an otaku & would prefer to stay at home . he took the positions of chief executioner because he felt the need to help in eradicating the mafia problem in his city & country as a whole . it’s something that hits close to home because the mafia kill his family . he forced himself to become part of the solution to take down the mafia but in doing so became part of a corrupt government .
gaito kurouzu likes & aligns himself with birds because he views them as free . he is bound by his emotions that hold him back though he doesn’t recognize this & fights against showing / expressing his weakness instead — putting himself in a cage .
yuuma nosaka has a crown scar on his back from the experiments & it can symbolize his triumph over his prior humanity though it’s a sorrowful reminder of the effects of losing it ( not really an headcanon , i just really wanted to put that into writing) .
i decided to change the heLL out of kokichi ouma’s ‘evil secret organization’ . instead of a prank group , DICE is a group of people who do illegal ( often times morally bad ) things to get information to convict criminals . in a way , this organization can be seen as evil because of the methods they use to get this information but local law enforcement accept ( & actively depend on ) their information to prosecute criminals ( the police department & other parts of government seem fairly morally skewed in the world of danganronpa tbh ) , but they don’t even know who this leader is . in fact , no one except some staff members of hopes peak academy know that kokichi is the leader . & on the number of members , there isn’t 10,000 but there used to be . it’s about 4,000 now .
about rui’s age , according to this pose right here , it’s not something that is outright stated or confirmed . from what i can tell , his age ( chronologically ) lands somewhere in between 10 - 20 . i want to say he turned into a demon at 8 but has kept his appearance around 11 upon aging further because of the role he wants to play in his family ( & how he’s most comfortable ) is to be one of the youngest if not THE youngest . this is because he wants to be protected even though obviously he doesn’t need his family members for that . ether way , i want to say his chronological age is 15 , or at least that’s how i’ll portray him . he just appeared very well spoken to be 11 in my opinion . & of course , like all my other demon characters from the series , he’d be 115 in the open verse to stay consistent with the events of his backstory .
on that note , i think rui would be one of the lower moons who can fall out of muzan’s curse with relative ease in comparison to the other members of the 12 kizuki . he doesn’t seem too devoted to muzan ( emotionally & the like ) & comes off as a bit more self serving in what he does . while he does search for the blue spider lily as ordered i believe his top priority falls back to creating a happy environment for himself .
in the demon slayer manga , its stated that sanemi shinazugawa is colour blind but it doesn’t say what kind . i briefly wrote about this in his dead by daylight verse but i’ll go into a lil more detail . he has tritanopia , which means his blue & yellow colour perception is weak . blue’s & greens ( anything with this undertone from my understanding too ) look cyan & yellows ( anything with undertones too ) appears in different shades of red . since some of the human characters have a super natural element to them ( like zenitsu & his hearing etc. ) i decided to have sanemi see blood in a more vibrant shade of red than the typical human ( kinda like how birds see red differently than humans ) . going off that point , because of his colour blindness he can’t see very well in the dark but the injuries he inflicts demons & the blood they spill help guide him in the dark . blood demon art that utilizes their blood like nezuko’s burning blood technique or rui’s bloody spider webs really help with navigation .

I figure it may be useful to give a list of the games featured and which characters belong to which game, since I haven’t yet started to implement specific tags for the games. So, below the cut is a list of dating sims and games with dating sim elements I have played, and the OCs created for different routes and choices within said games that will be mentioned in future on this blog. The more I do and play, this will get updated.
Dear god there’s a lot of them...I have a problem, you guys...

The Ultimate List of Alternative Baby Names { bohemian, hippie, offbeat, fantasy, goth baby names} So you've got a wee one on the way and you're looking for a name as unique as your new baby is going to be, am I right? Well, check out this great list of offbeat names for I've created just for creative moms and dads-to-be like you. A lot of these names are form lists I made when thinking of names for my two tots and some inspired by my favorite celebrity kid names and some are from the top of my head.  Yes, some of these names are "out there" and I've gotten a lot of hateful comments about this post (that's why comments are disabled) but what do you expect from a post called THE ULTIMATE LIST OF ALTERNATIVE BABY NAMES? If you like the names. Awesome! If you don't, that's cool too. To each his own! NOTE: I didn't separate the names by gender as many of these can work for both boys and girls! #1 MEMORIES ((WARNING SPOILERS))
In reading stuff, and watching the music videos, I'm thinking that Mystery is probably the only one who fully remembers that night in the cave. Like, Arthur might have partially blocked it from the trauma of being possessed and used to kill his best friend, and then having his arm ripped off by his other best friend's dog who turned into a demon fox. This explains why he still gets flashes of memories of the yoko. However, I'm not sure what's going on with Vivi. She saw Lewis fall, and be impaled, might have seen it was Arthur who pushed him, might have seen yoko Mystery bite off Arthur's arm. Might have blocked it herself.
However, several times we see her eyes glow magenta in response to a flash of power from Lewis. So maybe she was too close when Lewis went ghost and got zapped?
Maybe Mystery wiped her memories of the cave and of her and Lewis dating so as to save her from grief? (And to stop her from remembering that he's an ancient fox demon.) And hence the glow is the spell to alter her memories reaffirming itself when ever any memories try to surface.
The first time they glow is in the mansion, which was designed by Lewis and might have contained things that would remind her of him. (Or his aura)
The problem is that there's no hint of when people are talking, other than brief body gestures, or Arthur's infamous mouthed exclamation of "Lewis??"
But in the second scene they glow in, from Freaking Out where she's sleeping in the back of the van while Arthur sits beside her looking over the map of where they've looked for Lewis so far, we can assume here that maybe he's muttering to himself about or to Lewis that trigger her to start dreaming of him. Something happens tho cause Vivi's eyes and the image of Lewis on the laptop, both start glowing, and at this point Mystery gets a super intense look on his face (and possibly either exudes demonic aura or actually goes yoko.) Which triggers poor sleep deprived Arthur's PTSD and has him swan diving out of the Van waking Vivi who gives Mystery a wtf expression to which he responds with the most shit eating grin ever and tries to shrug it off. (Which nobody buys Mystery. We know yur up to something. Like exuding power to keep Vivi's memories blocked?)
I do believe that Vivi has had her memories altered somehow, as otherwise why isn't she as frazzled as Arthur by Lewis's disappearance? The only sign of potential depression is her sleeping a lot. That's the only sign we've been given thus far. Otherwise she has been depicted as happy and care free.
Thoughts?
