OCCULTIC;NINE REVIEW
Warning: May contain spoilers so proceed with caution!☆
Overall Score: 9.5 out of 10
Funimations Description: A high schooler's supernatural blog connects nine strangers seeking answers for the unexplained paranormal events in their lives.
I went into this series as a late night "I need background noise to go to sleep" show, not expecting much from it, however it turned out to be way wayyy more than I thought!
Let's start off with characters!
Yuta, our protagonist, I found to be very endearing (but I'm a sucker for the neet archetype if ya know what I mean lolol), and I really enjoyed his and Ryo-tas' relationship throughout the series. Although most of these characters fit in with the basic tropes (i.e deredere, hinedere, kuudere etc.) I found that each of them were unique while following said tropes, and also really progressed as characters throughout the story. Yuta's change from wanting to only make money and living an easy life to being willing to sacrifice his very being for the friends he has made my little otaku heart flutter.
Another good example of great character developement was Sarai. He went from an extremely stubborn, stoic and angry skeptic to a character who admits his flaws and learns to listen. And it wasn't a hot to cold change either. I started noticing him going from "I can never be wrong!" to becoming a sort of tsundere and then finally going so far as to tell Yuta that he was wrong for being a skeptic and that Yuta made him change his mind. Development like this made it a lot more enjoyable to see the characters interact and it really made them feel like they were real people dealing with the situations they're put in like real people!
Let's talk about the art next!
The animation was lovely and so was the art! The mood was always set very well by the scenery and the characters felt so in place within their surroundings. Honestly the art for the settings really blew me away! There was always a lot of detail and personality in these places and they really cemented the portrayl of a real world with real people in it.
The character designs were 100% on point and super cute too! My favorite design was Miyu's!
And with that, we move on to the plot!☆
I have to say, I really really enjoyed the story. The idea, at least when I think of what I've seen, was fresh and different and definitely something that'll stick with me! At first I had no clue what was going on. Quite honestly, it took me until the last 2 or 3 episodes to actually get a good idea of what was happening, but I loved every second of that confusion. It's pretty fast paced and a lot is thrown at you at once, so if you watch it you'll really have to pay attention! First it's "wow this girls is a psychic!" And then it's "wow 200 something people were found dead in a lake!" And then its "wow this girl kept her dead brother in her house for a whole year!" And the finally "oh wow they're all DEAD!!!" It's one of those shows that keeps you there by throwing you through a loop again again, but without feeling like the surprises are forced. However, the ending.... the ending was... disappointing to say the least. For all that buildup and all that suspense it was just kind of a letdown. They set you up with so many twists and so much excitement that you'd think you'd be given a grand, satisfying end, but sadly that's not the case. It ended quickly and very happy go lucky, and felt like a very forced "happily ever after" kind of deal, but I suppose some of that can be chalked up to how fast paced the show is.
And now my review comes to a close!☆
If you decide to watch it then come back after you're done and let me know what you think! And if you've already seen it I'd love to hear your thoughts too☆
I'll be doing reviews like this every time I finish a series so stay tuned for more! o(>ω<)o
That's all for now! Bye bye!☆
