Nosleep author new to Tumblr --- Here to say hi!

It's great to see you here!

In case you're a stranger stumbling across this, I am an author on r/nosleep over on Reddit. I write first person POV dark fantasy/horror stories, mostly with a light touch. Topics include but are not limited to fairy-infested theme parks, frustrated dimension hoppers struggling with unemployment and women in wedding dresses roaming haunted forests. If any of that sounds interesting to you, feel free to check out my Reddit account. Or maybe you'd care to take a look at my subreddit, r/CrypticPark. As of now, the bulk of my work can be found there.

I suppose everyone who's following this blog knows me from Reddit. I plan to post my stories here as well as to r/nosleep. I find that the landscape on that subreddit has changed a lot lately, and not exactly in the best way. So maybe branching out will do me and my creative work some good. Let's see how it goes!

I gotta admit, I'm not at all used to how Tumblr works, so this post is as much as a greeting as it is me dipping my toes into what's sure to be a raging sea. Do folks even post texts like these here? Guess I'll see. Have mercy on me, is what I'm saying. I'm about as social media-savvy as your stereotypical granny. In fact, I am typing this with my screen dangerously close to my face, squinting at the keyboard like a vole. Still, I'll try my best to figure out this platform and make your stay on my blog as pleasant as I possibly can. I admittedly had fun playing with colors and fonts for my profile, so I hope there'll be good things to come.

Useful Online Resources for Creative Students

Tips to controlling your creative chaos.

Studying Creative Writing and Theatre led me to exploring more about myself as an individual as well as an aspiring writer and actress. And in my writing I managed to compile a few more secret helpers to my party so when I am on the verge of a meltdown due to stress and writer’s block, there’s always a helping hand to get me out of a tricky situation. 

Every writer has their tools, from their brain to the type of pen they most prefer to make notes with and which software they prefer to work on. In this article I will be going through some of the tools that have best helped me through my time at university.

I know, I know, not particularly exciting and original but it is imperative for us to have these at the ready, whether through technological means of the internet or in printed editions. We have all been in that place where there is a word on the tip of our tongues but we just can’t find it and that is where these come to our rescue.

YouTube has plenty of channels dedicated to writing, publishing, editing etc. It also has footage of our beloved authors who give plenty of valuable advice from their extensive experience in the job. It is also home to many wonderful playlist channels- no doubt helping me with the flow of my stories a few times or concentrating on studying an essay.

Speaking of music! Music is probably a number one for me personally, it creates the atmosphere internally before you cry, sweat and bleed it out onto the pages yourself with your own words. Spotify is my favourite as with a student discount you can get a premium membership that means no advertisement interruptions. You can also spend time creating different playlists for different works, for characters, settings or a collective emotion.

Now, if you have not come across the wonders of pinterest I must direct it towards you as some are stimulated by music others are stimulated by photos. Helping to visualise characters, clothing, setting they have many wonderful photos for this, as well as plenty of information that can be shared on history, culture, creative ways to get rid of a body etc. There are also posts specifically tuned for writers, a large amount coming from Tumblr blogs which I would also recommend looking at.

⊱ ────── Reedsy ────── ⊰

The next site I recommend is Reedsy. Reedsy is an online blog and website that connects writers, editors, artists and publishers. They have writing software where you can write your book in a publishable format, they have apps and tools that vary from generators and prompts to online classes that you can subscribe to. They also have writing competitions which help to create portfolios for new writers. At Reedsy you can meet other like minded individuals through the marketplace and post for your online portfolio.

⊱ ────── Fantasy Name Generators ────── ⊰

Now to some writers, using Generators can seem like a cheat but if you’re stuck then this website is a good place to go, whether you’re struggling with world-building or character creation and need some good names there’s always something you can find and note down. A tip to give would be to take two names and mix them to come up with something new, that way it also feels a little less of a cheat.

Finishing here, I hope that any of these tools are useful for you as they have been for me in organising my creative chaos. And my last piece of advice for any unpublished writer or writing student would be not to compare your works in progress with any published works. Who knows which draft number it is so don’t compare it to your first!

Hey with the loss of my headphones that I found on the ground at school, i realized the futility of life and have decided to post my notes on a creative writing idea I had in the midst of the lockdowns and forgot about since so should I post the timeline first or the character notes? A little thing to get the vibe of my idea, I guess: “A realm filled with magic and monsters and the heroes who defeat them, legends rise to face evil and when adventure calls five brave warriors will always answer but The Black Powder Crows are there to deal with whatever monster or tyrant rises in the aftermath, they are not the first you call to deal with a rampaging troll or a lich’s army but they’re cheap and you don’t have the time to call the party that just left for their next adventure back.”

AI is being widely used for "creating" art and writings nowadays. I get that generating images and texts out of nowhere is a lot of fun, but can I just say how much I hate what it does to actual creators?

I put creating in quotes because imo, AI doesn't create. It regurgitates. To me, those who call themselves "AI artists" aren't artists at all. How can you look at something a machine has spat out for you and feel any sort of joy? Don't you know how rewarding it is to truly write/paint something with your own mind and hands? To have an idea and build it from the ground up, pouring all your heart into it?

Please don't let this whole AI thing become normal. It's the death of passion. That genuinely gives me a kind of creeping anxiety. Can't we just all stay creative? Creativity is the best thing we do.

ATTENTION D&D PLAYERS AGED 16-18

I have a proposition for you. Are you wanting to play D&D but either have no one to play with or don't know how? I have some great new for you! I am an almost 17 year old writer/DM, but recently I've been experiencing some writers block. Where do you come in? Well I've had an idea, I would like to write a series based on a D&D campaign I've already created, I just need players! The idea is that I will record each session, and then write out a chapter based on the events of that session, here on tumblr! A quote book included separately and everything!

Here's the catch: I don't like being in/dming for groups larger than 4-5, I start having issues focusing on everything and it's no fun sitting there waiting for your turn in combat.

They spent years searching for their friends, but struggled to even feed themselves some days, leaving them unable to travel in hopes of finding them.

Background:

Growing up fairly wealthy in the House of the Hearth with his twin brother, he grew to be a kind man, often being found in the poorer neighborhoods to play with the children. He always enjoyed the company of Audhilde, and has always seen them as a great friend. When his family moved cities he was put into the school of Evocation, but no matter what he does he always seems to fall short of his twin brother, Alack. If he'd been granted the time, he would have tried to find Audhilde, but his duties never granted it, leaving him to wonder what had happened to his good friend.

Background:

Growing up spoiled, he never really cared for the company of the poorer children, except for Audhilde. Something about his brother wanting to be friends with her made him also want to be friends with them. He always had to find a way to be better than his brother, one upping him constantly to win over their parents favor. He only ever spoke to the children that Ajack did, even if he didn't care for his company, due to the fact he struggled to make friends of his own. When the two had moved so they could attend the school of Evocation he never bothered to search for his old friend, not seeing much of a point. Though he'd never admit it, it did hurt him to see his brother so upset about his lost friendship.

Taniew | Level 8 Cleric | Wood Elf

Background:

Growing up in the temple of Eldath she was taught to always help others in need, however, she was not given many opportunities growing up to interact with anyone outside of the temple, growing up lonely and awkward. She eventually finds her way to the main city, still following the teachings of the Temple of Eldath, but also trying to find her own path and (hopefully) make some friends.

why do fathers love their daughters the most when they're children?

have i become a different person? do i have a different name, or a different identity, now that i am older? am i not the same person who used to await your arrival from work everyday by the front door? am i not the little girl who used to wait eleven months for you to come back home in primary school because your job was in another country? am i not the girl you used to skype call with every single night, telling her you love her the most in this world?

why is it, that you yell at me every single time i have an opinion that is different from yours? why is it, that you have a problem with almost everything i wear? why is it that i'm the one who should've never been born, when you're the reason i'm here in the first place?

sometimes i wonder if the things i do or say are because of you — if you shape my entire personality even though i haven't even lived half of my life with you. because somehow, whenever someone tells me, "you're just like your father", i start to cry. tears stream down my eyes like glaciers melting to form the ganges, and my eyes grow puffy as if they've known nothing else.

why do you affect me this way? i think about it almost every time you say anything to me. even if you've simply asked me how my day was, i still think why this small question has my heart happy. even if these blissful moments are small, and the problems are huge, i still forgive you each time. i always forgive you because i am a fool who thinks you'll be a better parent to me. but you never are. and you never will be.

but that's okay. it's not your fault. i hope.
