OPLA fan cast polls - Daz Bones/Mr. 1 prelims
Tumblr media
Propaganda under the cut.
Winston Duke: first of all, he’s a cutie pie. second of all, he’s huge. this dude is 6’5!! and have you seen his thighs?? he was M’Baku in “Black Panther.” he was also played the dad in “Us” (2019). he also dyed his hair blonde at one point, which is perfect for Daz (his hair is kinda white i think?). he would look perfect in the sleeveless coat and the baggy pants with the huge tattoo on his chest.
Dwayne Johnson: He looks the part, could definitely play him. (The only doubt I have is if he'd go for such a serious and stoic role, but the fact that the show is still kinda silly should make up for it.)

Part 13
Warnings: Teen Content. Making out. Plot
Winter Break places a pause to the school year activities but the girls are busy personally. Romanda has Shuri fly to DC to be with her for a week so she can be back to see Riri’s Honors Society Induction. Riri hates the separation so she calls Shuri as soon as she can.
“How was the flight Dove?” “It went smoothly Princess. I went to sleep as soon as the plane took off.” Ri is curled up in her bed wearing one of Shuri’s many hoodies she has acquired. “Baby, how can you sleep literally anywhere? You have got to be aware of what’s going on around you.” “I was fine Princess. I just envision you being with me. That comforts me.”
“You made that up to make me smile. Don’t distract I still worry.” “I know. There's no need I’m safe. Mother wants to congratulate you on your honors society induction. We are so proud of you. How is the speech coming?”
“I have it done. It’s about my Dad, my biggest force to keep creating. Give her my thanks.” “He is in everything you do, just remember. I can’t wait to be there in the front row.” “You better since I’ll be at every home game to see the Panther play.” “Oooh sounds like I’m going to have the best season. With my new good luck charm there.” Another call chimes in and Riri let’s Shuri take the call.
“I will text you later Princess. I love you.” “I love you more.”
The fast switch brings M'Baku’s deep baritone voice over the speaker. He serves as Shuri’s agent and wanted to discuss some endorsements that are on the table. Offers came flying in after the first campaign. This year is crucial for her image and she has a lot of good buzz. “Bro I would rather have an Adidas sponsorship than Reebok. The apparel is more me you know.” “I do like the Adidas agreement better so no issues from me. Baby Sister. Before you ask, you can wear other things recreationally. ”
Shuri laughs full chest. “Aye I’ll get right on picking out my game swag. Second Brotha, is my surprise ready?” A deep bellowy laugh comes through the phone. “Yes Sister, your Christmas surprise is ready. Your softness is showing. Being in love is a beautiful thing, no?”
Shuri drops her head blushing. How she feels for Riri has been known for sometime but it still gives her butterflies. “It is a surreal feeling.” “Well I love to witness your joy. She is a talented young woman. Just make sure you are being responsible.” The last part makes Shuri flustered. “Thank you Brotha. She is my shining star. I am more than responsible.” Humming M’Baku just leaves the comment for now. “We will be in touch Sister.” “Bye Bro.”
Shuri flops on her bed lying on her back looking up to the ceiling. Her mind is all over the place. Especially now. Sometimes she just needs these moments to process everything around her. Her Senior Basketball season is right around the corner. She’s nervous about it for reasons she can’t quite put into words. Maybe she just feels things are going too well. Her classes she even has been painting again, the NIL deal is good, plus she has the girl of her dreams. She wishes her Father could be here for it all, that makes her think of Riri who she knows wishes the same thing.
That wish motivates Shuri to be very intentional about supporting Rihanna, and she knows that Riri thinks the same way. The thought makes her smirk. This surprise she has up her sleeve was not easy to think up. She racked her brain about this for weeks and found the perfect thing. She hopes.
Ironically Riri is thinking in a similar fashion lying in almost the exact same position. Her mind is wandering thinking of her research, of her induction speech and how she is now loudly and proudly in Love. It’s been a whirlwind but it feels so comfortable. Riri is stuck though on how to surprise her girlfriend for Christmas. Of all the holidays to be stuck she chooses her favorite one to not have a clue of what to do.
The trip to DC was pleasantly quick. Shuri made a point to clear a lot of her business so she can just enjoy the holiday. Riri and Sharon were standing at the airline waiting for a jet lagged Shuri. Once she saw her Princess Shuri swept her up in a tight hug lifting her high into the air with ease. Riri could not help but kiss her and pull her bottom lip just a touch. It speaks with a bit more passion than Sharon could stand. Clearing her throat they split apart gathering Shuri’s things in the car.
“Shuri, please don’t leave home without this girl again ok?” Sharon is jovial as she pulls out of the pick up lane. “Hey! I wasn’t that bad Sha.” “Yes Sister it was that bad, you acted out One Wish in the shower.” The car is full of laughs. “STOOOOP I just missed you is all” Riri whined facing Shuri. “We FaceTimed every night though Princess.” Shuri pecked Ri’s pouting lips. “Aww I’ll just pack you in my luggage next time.” Sharon shakes her head and makes a fake barf sound. “Gross.” The ride home from there was chill.
The chemistry with the families was immediate and genuine. Mrs Williams and Mrs Udaku adore the relationship their daughters have so they support it any way they can. There is an open door policy at both homes but it works for them, neither girl is ready for what happens behind closed doors other than some making out quite yet. That is what they decided in the last conversation but some feelings have been shifting recently. Still no action yet despite the feelings.
This helps to ease Romanada’s mind as she is not home much due to her Diplomatic Duties. The Netflix nights, Friday Dinners and nap dates are all parent approved courting.
It is the day before Christmas Eve and the girls have gotten approved for their first supervised overnight. Shuri will stay at Riri’s then have a family style Christmas Eve Dinner with the Williams’ plus a full Christmas Day. Everyone piles out of the car when Sharon pulls up to the house. It feels so much home for Shuri she even says it.
After getting settled and changed in the Pjs Riri and Shuri build their normal Netflix fort in the front room and cuddle in for a Christmas movie marathon. Riri is sitting between Shuri’s legs leaning on her chest. “Hey Princess, pass the popcorn.” Shuri's voice vibrates on Ri's back as she speaks. Riri picks it up and holds it out, keeping it away looking back with a smirk. “No come get it.” Shuri smirks back leaning up on her knees, she starts to tickle her girlfriend for the bowl. “I’ll get it alright.” Ri sets the bowl down and is full blow gently wrestling now. They roll around a bit with Riri nipping at Shuri’s skin a few times.
They stop as Shuri holds Ri with her on top and the butterflies in their stomach turn to flames with one kiss. Pulling on her bottom lip Shuri slides her tongue into Ri’s mouth and a moan escapes both of their mouths. Shuri’s hands move with more confidence over Ri’s body resting her thumbs under the hem of Ri’s shirt gripping her body closer. Ri’s hands tangle in Shuri’s hair and she pulls at the curls when a new sensation takes over her. Shuri is kissing her neck with a soft bite and sucking. There are several more that follow leaving bruises. Riri bites her bottom lip for dear life to not make too much noise.
Shuri moans against the skin she is bruising with each tug to her hair. “Shit” she says as she pulls away to look at Ri. The look in her eye means Riri wants to try so they roll over leaning Riri on top. Shuri’s hands run up her back as Ri follows the steps Shuri did with a little more flare. She kisses her lips with tongue then pulls at Shuri’s ear. Before biting her neck and licking it some. Shuri breathes out gripping Ri’s back under her shirt. Riri places a soft hand on Shuri’s neck before kissing her on the lips again. Shuri has to push her back some to speak. Breathless. “We need to stop.” Riri giggles while holding her face to hide her blush. Ri realizes that she was rocking her hips a bit into Shuri. Breathless and giggling “Right I’m sorry.”
Laughing as she moves Ri’s hands, Shuri leaves butterfly kisses all over her girl's face. “You don’t have to be sorry, trust me. I just don’t want to wake Sha.” They move to cuddle and get comfy. Shuri is holding onto Ri loosely. “Hey Dove can I ask you something?” “Of course Baby. You can ask me anything.” Shuri picks up on her nervous energy. She breathes out tickling Riri’s neck. “I know tonight is not right but…do you know when you will be ready?” Kissing that same spot on her neck, Shuri wants to reassure Riri. “Baby what are you asking me?” Riri sits up out of Shuri’s arms with a huff. “I just want to know why you stop us every time something gets close to happening? I know I don’t know much but I can learn.” Riri’s head is down, not meeting Shuri’s eyes.
Shuri sits up to face Ri and holds her face to make their eyes meet. “Honestly I have never stopped because of you. I stopped us because of me. I don’t have much experience either, so I get nervous about what to do.” It’s Shuri’s turn to look down. “You are the most beautiful girl I have ever seen. So never question if I’m ready. I just want it to be right.” Riri kisses Shuri’s cheek hugging her. “Then let’s say now we will do what feels right until it time.”
Shuri melts into Riri’s hug and she shakes her head yes. They allow sleep to come for them after they settle in their blankets relieved for tonight.

@ghostlydarknight
Jade was in her library, sitting on the couch reading a book. Her legs were outstretched, feet resting on a foot rest. Bobbi was laying perpendicular, her head resting in Jade’s lap. Every now and then, the Outworld Princess Assassin would lower her book to kiss her wife’s lips. There was a knock at the door and the two looked up.
“I’ll get it,” Bobbi said, sitting up. Jade lowered her book, watching as Bobbi went to the door and opened it up.
“Syndel? What’s going on?” Bobbi asked upon seeing the Outworld Queen.
“King T’Challa requests to speak to Jade,” Syndel said. Jade put her book down, walking over to join her wife and mother.
“Mom? Is everything okay?” Jade asked. Syndel hesitated slightly.
“There has been a…..complication with Talokan and HYDRA,” she said cryptically. Bobbi and Jade exchanged a look and the two followed Syndel to the meeting room. In the meeting room stood King T’Challa and the leader of the Jabari Tribe, M’Baku.
“King T’Challa, M’Baku,” Jade greeted, crossing her arms against her chest in the traditional Wakandan greeting, Bobbi and Syndel doing the same.
“Princess Jade. Queen Syndel. Agent Morse,” T’Challa replied as he and M’Baku put their hand over their heart before extending it to the three in the traditional Outworld greeting.
“Not to sound ungrateful, but what is going on? We don’t usually have social visits from Wakanda,” Jade asked. T’Challa sighed slightly, M’Baku looking rather pissed.
“We have reason to believe that HYDRA has kidnapped Namor and we need your help to get him back,” the King of Wakanda said.
:readmore:
“Of course we’ll help,” Jade said instantly.
“Good, because who knows what HYDRA could do to him,” M’Baku said darkly. Jade’s expression quickly turned dark and she took a step towards M’Baku. Bobbi and T’Challa quickly made their way between the two. Bobbi held her hands out, one resting gently on Jade’s chest while the other was extended towards M’Baku. Meanwhile, T’Challa had a restraining arm against M’Baku.
“HYDRA killed my mother’s first husband to take over Outworld. I have heard horror stories about what HYDRA has done to SHIELD agents. Hell, my wife was tortured by a HYDRA agent before I met her. So don’t you dare talk to me about what HYDRA is capable of,” the Outworld Princess said angrily.
“You don’t get it,” M’Baku said before Jade cut him off.
“Don’t get what? How you feel about him? Because I know exactly what the fuck I would do if HYDRA kidnapped my wife. I wouldn’t stop until they were all dead. You’re right in that I don’t know exactly how you feel, but I know how I feel about the woman I love and I can imagine how you feel about the man you love,” Jade said.
“Has anyone ever told you that you are a very intense woman?” M’Baku asked. Jade grinned.
“My mom. My dad. My brother. My sister. Various friends and enemies. Bobbi nearly every night,” she replied.
“Jade!” Bobbi yelped, blushing hard as she playfully slapped her wife’s shoulder. Jade just smirked.
“Do you have any lead on where HYDRA may have taken Namor?” She asked.
“We don’t….we were actually wondering if SHIELD would be willing to help us to locate where they may have taken him,” T’Challa said. Jade looked over at Bobbi, who nodded.
“Of course we’ll help,” she said.
“Let’s get to it, then,” M’Baku said.
In a HYDRA warehouse, Namor was chained up with multiple space heaters facing towards him. The heat was unbearable, drying out his skin and sapping him of his strength. A door opened and a man who the others referred to as “Rumlow” walked in.
“Oh how the mighty king has fallen now,” he gloated. Namor glared up at Rumlow, anger in his eyes despite his exhaustion.
“You won’t get away with this,” he warned. Rumlow smirked at that.
“Oh, I believe we will,” he said. Namor snorted at that.
“My people will bring you down,” he said.
“Your people? You are too weak to fight us! Once HYDRA has you on our side, your people will follow!” Rumlow laughed.
“Wakanda won’t let you get away with it. The leader of the Jabari Tribe, M’Baku? He will kill you,” Namor warned. Rumlow just laughed at that.
“Let’s see that,” here Rumlow used a word that Namor didn’t know what it meant, “try.”
“You obviously don’t know Wakanda,” Namor said dryly. Rumlow just laughed and stalked off.
In Outworld, SHIELD had located the location of Namor. Jade stared at the map, arms crossed against her chest. Without a single word, she walked over to a drawer and pulled out a lighter.
“What are you planning on doing with that?” T’Challa asked.
“I’m going to burn that damn warehouse down after we rescue Namor,” Jade said, her voice eerily calm.
“That’s where HYDRA held me when they kidnapped me. And Jade is a protective wifey,” Bobbi explained, seeing the confused look on T’Challa and M’Baku’s faces.
“How long will it take to get there,” M’Baku asked.
“Two hours, once we get high enough in the Quinjet, I’ll set it to Mach 3 and it’ll take about two hours,” Bobbi replied.
“That’s not good enough,” M’Baku snapped. Jade bristled but they all ignored her.
“I can push it to Mach 5 but any faster than that in our current atmosphere would cause problems,” Bobbi said.
“How long?”
“An hour.”
“Do it then,” M’Baku commanded. Bobbi nodded, “We leave when you’re ready.”
“Then we go now,” M’Baku said, producing his Knobkerrie. Bobbi looked at Jade and T’Challa. T’Challa tapped his necklace, his suit forming over him.
“You know I’m always ready for a fight,” Jade said, grabbing her warfans.
“I’ll stay in the Quinjet and be ready to fly when you return,” Bobbi said as the ground headed through the portal to the Playground to get to the Quinjet.
A little over an hour later, the Quinjet touched down just outside of Aranda de Duero, Spain.
“Let’s go,” Jade said, lifting her mask to cover her face. T’Challa and M’Baku nodded.
“Be safe,” Bobbi said, “I’ll be waiting for you when you get back.”
“Wouldn’t expect anything less,” Jade said with a fond smile, giving her wife a quick kiss before the three headed out.
Jade, T’Challa, and M’Baku quietly made their way through the warehouse, Jade and T’Challa stealthily taking out the guards in their own ways.
“You know, you do not have to kill them,” T’Challa commented. Jade smirked at that.
“I know, but it’s easier,” she replied.
“You could just knock them out,” he pointed out. Jade let out a dramatic sigh as another guard turned the corner. In an instant, Jade had the guard in a headlock and held it until the guard passed out.
“Better?” She snarked. T’Challa nodded, though his smile was hidden behind his mask. From a ways away, the three heard voices talking. They all straightened up, listening intently. Jade motioned towards the sound and the other toe nodded, heading towards the sound. As they approached, they could hear Rumlow talking.
“Come on, all you have to do is comply,” he said.
“Shit,” Jade swore quietly. T’Challa and M’Baku looked at her, but Jade said nothing. M’Baku glanced at T’Challa, who just shrugged.
“Let’s go,” T’Challa said. Jade nodded and walked to the closed door, kicking it open. Rumlow looked up from where he was crouched in front of Namor.
“Ah it’s the,” here Rumlow said words that made Jade’s already pissed expression somehow turn even angrier.
“What did you just call them? And me?” She said in a dangerous tone.
“I called you a,” Rumlow smirked, repeating the foul words he had just used.
“What do those mean?” T’Challa whispered to Jade.
“The word that began with an ‘n’ is used as a racial slur against those with African heritage while the other one is used as a racial slur against those with Asian heritage,” Jade said in a pissed tone.
“Ah, so the dyke has a brain,” Rumlow said. Jade rushed at Rumlow, sweeping out with a kick. The kick landed sharply on the jaw of the HYDRA agent, cracking it easily.
“My beauty, there you are,” a delirious Namor said, looking at M’Baku with an expression of pure devotion.
“Let’s get you free,” M’Baku said roughly, crouching near Namor. T’Challa joined, unsheathing his claws to slice through the ties.
“Get him out of here, I’ll finish up Rumlow,” Jade said. M’Baku shook his head and stood.
“No, I will,” he said as T’Challa lifted up Namor. Jade looked at the Jabari Tribe leader before nodding.
“Let’s go,” she said to T’Challa. The two royalty members headed out of the warehouse. M’Baku faced Rumlow, swinging his Knobkerrie dangerously.
“You will pay,” he said before rushing at Rumlow.
Jade and T’Challa ran out of the warehouse and towards the waiting Quinjet.
“Those words that he said. Do they really mean what you said?” T’Challa asked quietly. Jade nodded.
“And the other word he called me. Dyke. That’s a slur for lesbians. Probably a good thing Bobbi stayed at the Quinjet. If she heard him use those words, without a doubt he’d get a bullet in the brain,” she said just as quietly. T’Challa nodded as they reached the Quinjet. Before Jade could knock on it, the ramp lowered. Bobbi looked out, hand on her gun.
“Where is M’Baku?” She asked.
“Taking care of Rumlow,” Jade answered, boarding the Quinjet and kissing her wife on the cheek.
“Is he okay?” Bobbi asked, nodding at Namor.
“He is dehydrated, it has sapped him of his strength,” T’Challa replied. Bobbi walked over to the wall and tapped on it. A compartment opened and Bobbi pulled out a water bottle, tossing it to Jade. Jade pulled out a fan and sliced the bottle open, dumping it on Namor.
“Why do you….” T’Challa began.
“It’s water,” Bobbi deadpanned, “every Quinjet is furnished with a mini fridge that has both water and electrolyte-recovering beverages.”
“That makes sense,” T’Challa said as M’Baku exited the warehouse. He pulled out the lighter Jade had handed to him and flicked it at the warehouse, setting it ablaze.
“Let’s go,” M’Baku said in a dark voice, boarding the Quinjet. Bobbi nodded and headed to the cockpit, starting up the Quinjet and heading back to the Playground. M’Baku walked to Namor, placing a hand to his cheek.
“Are you okay?” He asked in a rough voice. Namor stared up at him, still half delirious.
“I am just fine, my beauty,” he said. M’Baku turned slightly pink at that.
“I’m glad,” he said, kissing Namor on the forehead. Jade and T’Challa exchanged amused looks at the scene. Despite what he said, the two knew that M’Baku was actually totally in love with Namor.

Finally got to see Wakanda Forever
I think overall Black Panther was better, but only in that it felt like Cougler had a bit too much ground to cover in this movie for its runtime. I would like an extended, 4-5 hour cut of this film, I bet it would be stunning. The film is astonishing, regardless my personal takes.
One of the things I think is most striking in Cougler’s films as opposed to the rest of the MCU is how the women have their own, personal arcs, for themselves and one another. It’s so uncommon in film in general, much less for black women, to say nothing of a superhero franchise. And yet here we are:
- Shuri, struggling with her personal tendency, as a member of a younger generation, to set aside traditional, spiritual beliefs in favor of more modern mores. Coupled with the intense grief of losing her brother and then her mother, she’s a young woman at war with herself and everything else around her. Yet she bottles it up and sits on it, and we don’t really see her anger until she takes the herb and can no longer hide it from herself or anyone else. What an amazing thing to see, a show don’t tell of how women--especially black women--aren’t allowed to be made, aren’t allowed to be fragile, aren’t allowed to be.
- Ramonda’s long-simmering anger about how everyone turned their backs on her family when N’Jakada showed up. I had always wondered about this, and when first M’Baku and then Ramonda called people to the carpet for it, I was so happy to see it. It was heart-breaking how she blamed Okoye for Shuri and Riri’s kidnapping, but I couldn’t help but sympathize with her anger and its real source: the way Okoye didn’t stand be her family when N’Jakada came for them. It comes out there, in her fury over her entire family being gone, and Okoye is the unfortunate recipient of that rage.
- Speaking of which, I have a lot of sympathy for Okoye, a victim of circumstance, stuck wrestling with the traditions of her position and the realities of what’s going on around her. She was entirely within her rights to not expect such powerful forces to come for Shuri and Riri. Likewise she was surprised Ramonda still harbored resentment for the insurrection, which goes to show how carefully Ramonda kept it hidden (wonder where Shuri gets it from...). Of course, she’s a Queen, she has to if she wants to be seen as a competent ruler. In this way Cougler both presents a society in which Black Women are more equal and valued, and yet still gives a Black Woman character a similar catch-22, where she cannot be emotional, or angry, or herself, lest people doubt her. And so Okoye is entirely caught off guard, rightfully so I think; she’s more allowed to be herself, and maybe had no idea Ramonda was so angry, still, all these years later. (Now I am DYING for bits about during the snap, when it was just the two of them...)
- Riri, the fish out of water in the midst of this all, simultaneously a contributing factor to Wakanda’s problems and an emblem of all T’challa hoped to set right in the world. That moment where Riri talks about her dad, stopping short of speaking of his death--I don’t know the comics canon here, but I could feel in the look she and Shuri shared the unspoken meaning. There was no need to spell it out, only to show the scar and allow the viewer to take it in. (The fact that three Black Women are, moments later, surrounded by cops shooting at them brings it home.) She struggles to understand why Ramonda (or anyone else, really) would risk themselves for her, another show-don’t-tell about how the world has treated her, the way its ground down her assumed worth in the eyes of others. God, Dominique Thorne was so great in this role, full of late-teen energy and excitement.
And the other big thing: the primary men of color, Namor and M’Baku, and the brief appearance of N’Jakada himself, represent the very different poles for Shuri to cleave to. M’Baku, who could be calling her out as he did in the past, has learned and grown, just like Shuri. He understands now that what she needs most is guidance, not judgement, and takes that to heart. (And takes a moment to show up and remind everyone that in the past they completely fucking failed to support Ramonda and Shuri when he didn’t. I love him.)
Namor, on the other hand, comes offering carrot or stick. The movie doesn’t make the mistake of villifying him for wanting his people’s safety, which would be so easy to do. No, it’s the fact that he murders numerous Wakandans that’s the problem. To this extent he’s similar to...
N’Jakada, who appears when Shuri is at her lowest, and though I think it’d be easy to think of him as the devil on her shoulder I feel the real purpose here is to discuss how she’s not wrong to want Namor dead for what he’s done. In fact it’s probably not unreasonable at all, given what he’s done and is threatening to do. The problem, as M’Baku points out, is that Namor is revered by his people, not just as a leader but like an emperor of old, a god. Killing him will not be like killing a rival national leader, will not bring about the resolution they want. He’s not unsympathetic to Shuri’s desires, doesn’t even voice the notion that she’s wrong to want it; he just recognizes it won’t protect the people of Wakanda. N’Jakada is short-sighted enough to not think about that, and encourages Shuri to be the same. This is where she has to choose between herself and others, and reluctantly, she makes the right choice. And it costs her, we see her struggle when Namor’s life is hers to end--why should she, who’s lost so much to this man, have to let him live? But she does, for the sake of others, to protect, as the Black Panther should.
So yeah, this was an amazing narrative and had so much, I think I just wanted more more more. (Also I immediately went and re-watched Black Panther.) If you were looking for a movie about women and their lives with superhero trappings, look no further.

Hey boo! I was just writing while listening to music and Not Gon Cry came on and I got the most vivid memory of a T’Challa fic of the same name (I think?). Basically the reader/oc leaves M’Baku’s no good cheating ass and ends up falling for T’Challa. Do you remember who wrote it? It was so good! I got some days off for the holidays, and I might have to re-read…even though I should be writing 😂
Hey babe! I sure do! It’s called Not Gon Cry by my good sis @babygirlofwakanda 😘. I’m adding the masterlist here. No good cheating ass has me hollering cause it was true!🤣. Hey take a lil break and read a good story!

Single Dad!M’Baku Headcanon
For those who desired a less heart-wrenching conclusion to my Untitled series and for those who are simply curious to what our beloved M’Baku would be like as a single father.
M’Baku is extremely protective over his little boy.
Where the Jabari tribe leader can be found, his child can also be found either safely tucked against his chest or in the crook of his arm.
Taking after his mother, M’Baku’s boy is more of the quiet and pensive type.
M’Baku only speaks to his son in a soft tone.
M’Baku’s son is his entire world and the child is an absolute daddy’s boy.
The pair develop a somewhat unhealthy codependency in the boy’s early years but it becomes healthy overtime.
M’Baku is reluctant to speak of his deceased wife for her passing still pains him greatly, but when his little boy sneaks into his room at night after a nightmare (as she had once done) and asks to be told about his mother M’Baku can not refuse.
“Your mother was the most beautiful princess Wakanda had ever known and she was kind, so kind...”
Father-Son treks in the Jabari mountains are a given.
“Look son, over the great mountains and beyond is the land you will rule one day.”
While Jabari children usually start training at the age of five, M’Baku’s shy boy doesn’t want to join the other kids ( he would rather stay with his daddy and watch him train).
M’Baku obliges because he can never refuse his son or force him to do something he doesn’t want to do.
Many members of the Jabari criticize M’Baku for not forcing his son into combat training, some even claim he is a bad father and that his son is weak.
M’Baku disregards most comments, but doesn’t hesitate to pop someone when they start really talking sideways.
“You may think whatever you wish, but if anyone dares say something about the way I raise my son or ever dares insult him again, I will not hesitate to show you the might of your leader!”
M’Baku’s boy finally accepts to start training at the age of eight and is terribly good at it for having watched his father train for three years; however he has no care for it.
The boy is more interested in scientific discoveries and looks forward to spending weekends with his Auntie Shuri.
“There is no way compound A and C can be genetically modified to produce the fraction of volume necessary to develop a molecule identical to such an element! It simply is impos- actually now that I think about it... Call your dad and tell him Auntie Shuri’s going to need you for a few more days.”
M’Baku builds a lab similar to Shuri’s for his scientifically inclined son.
The boy spoiled rotten by Grandma Ramonda who never ceases to overfeed her ever so growing grandson.
Both look forward to their yearly trip to Italy where they honour the memory of M’Baku’s late wife/the boy’s mother.
“She would have been so proud of you,” M’Baku choked out as he gazed down at his boy (who was not too far away from become a man).
“She would have been proud of you too, father,” N’Kamili replied as he continued to stare at the sun setting on the Italian scenery.
There were no tears of sadness for her that day, just joy and longing. The sun shone a little longer for them for it was also filled with her joy and longing.
I should have written a whole damn Epilogue while I was at it smh. I hope you enjoyed it!

OPLA fan cast polls - Winston Duke as Daz Bones/Mr. 1
Tumblr media
Propaganda: first of all, he’s a cutie pie. second of all, he’s huge. this dude is 6’5!! and have you seen his thighs?? he was M’Baku in “Black Panther.” he was also played the dad in “Us” (2019). he also dyed his hair blonde at one point, which is perfect for Daz (his hair is kinda white i think?). he would look perfect in the sleeveless coat and the baggy pants with the huge tattoo on his chest.

“Okay, girl. Let’s move onto your two-three combo, and then you are going to come at me with a right hook as if it was your ex’s face,” Val instructed, holding up her mitts.
You dropped your hands, looking at her. “I’m not doing this because I want to kick his abusive ass. I am doing this for me. To build up my confidence and get stronger.”
“Yeah, yeah. You just want to look good naked for Rogers.” She wiggled her eyebrows, and you started punching the mitts. “Thata girl, I knew I could hit a nerve,” she chuckled to herself.
You completed a few more rounds, then Val decided it was time for a cool down. You nodded, breathing heavy, and stepped out of the ring. You wiped the sweat from your brow with your forearm while Val came over to help get you out of the gloves.
“You’re killing it, YN. Like, if someone ever decided to jump you, well, I think they would lose a hand.”
You chuckled at Val’s compliment. “Thanks, I do feel more confident in my movements, and my punches feel like they have more power behind them.”
“They do,” she agreed, “but it’s not hard enough to make me need to ice my hands or anything, like some of the coaches have to do when M’Baku is practicing.” She raised her eyebrows, shaking her head. “Men always have to be the strongest, but they’re not always the smartest.” She let out an annoyed sigh, rolling her eyes. “How are things with Rogers?”
You smiled as she started to untie your other glove. “He’s good. I think we’re good. Why, what’s the gossip at the station?”
“There’s not much. He tends to keep to himself about you, but there are times when he does get all flustered, blushy, and red when we pick on him about you. It’s cute,” Val smirked, eyeing you over, feeling yourself have the same reaction as him. “Have you two kindled the flame yet?” She wiggled her eyebrows, making your face heat up even more.
“Wouldn’t you like to know,” you chuckled, shaking your head.
“Don’t tell me then,” she winked. “When Carol and I talk about you two, we think you two look good together, and from what you both have been through, you both deserve a win, and I’m happy you two found each other.”
You smiled, undoing the hand wraps. “Thanks, Val. Speaking of Carol--” you peeked up at her, watching her closely “--how are things? Have you told the crew yet?”
“Not yet, but I am sure most of them already suspect something is going on?” Val shrugged, taking a sip out of her water bottle.
“I wouldn’t be so sure. I mean, they’re men,” you chuckled, rotating your wrists back and forth.
“Good point,” she laughed, tilting her water bottle at you. “They can be a little slower at picking up hints.”
____________
You sat on the couch folding laundry, following a developing armed robbery happening downtown at the Ideal Federal Saving Bank.
“Christine, how are things looking there? Have any of the robbers been identified?” Megan Henderson asked from the KTLA studio to Christine Everheart at the scene.
“Yes, Megan. We know two of the assailants at this time, Jack Rollins and Jasper Sitwell. They are two notorious criminals who have been involved in numerous robberies throughout the state of California, Nevada, and Arizona. We are still unsure about the three other associates assisting with this robbery at this time…”
The monitor by the front door started buzzing, pulling you away from the screen to see who was there. You smiled at the screen, seeing Thor waving at the camera with his hands full of groceries, and you buzzed him in.
You walked over to grab the remote, seeing the film crew circling the bank in a helicopter, and switched off the tv. You would need Thor's full attention when he helps you make your mom's chocolate chip cookies for fire safety at the station tomorrow.
“Sister, I come bearing gifts,” Thor shouted, somehow being able to open the front door with his hands full. “And did you see that robbery hostage situation--” he pointed in the direction to downtown LA “--Nat and Clint have their hands full with this one.”
“Yeah, they do,” you agreed, leading Thor to the kitchen to drop off the bags on the counter. You furrowed your brows at the multiple bags of groceries. “What did you all get? All I needed was flour, chocolate chips, and eggs.”
“They were having a sale, and I couldn’t resist.” He lifted up a six-pack of beer, smiling like a child on their birthday.
“Well, that’s not going to take you long to finish,” you smirked at him, pulling groceries from the bags.
“No, I got this for us to drink while we bake mom’s cookies,” Thor added with a sincere smile, scratching his beard. “You know brother-sister bonding. I also grabbed snacks, so we are less tempted to eat all the cookies.”
You grinned, staring at him in awe. “Sounds like fun, let’s get these cookies started.”
“And I’ll open a beer for you and supervise,” Thor added, going into the drawer to get the bottle opener, and you narrowed your eyes at him.
___________
“Are you sure you’re doing it right?” Thor watched over your shoulders while you started creaming the butter and sugar together. “I don’t remember mom using one of these fancy mixers. She did it with one of those hand mixer thingies.”
“It just makes it go quicker,” you replied, rolling your eyes. “And you can do a bigger batch.”
“They’re not going to taste the same.”
“This is how I’ve always made them. You have literally watched me make these cookies with this machine before.”
“Oh well, I noticed they tasted different.”
“You’re insufferable, Thor,” you stated, turning around and pushing him to the other side of the counter. He laughed, taking a seat on the stool across from you.  “Do you want to find my cookie scoop? You’re scooping once I have everything mixed.”
“Finnneee,” he dragged out, complaining. He went over to the drawer and pulled out the scoop, and returned to the stool. “How have things been going with Steve?”
“It’s been fun,” you smiled, adding the eggs to the mixer bowl and turning it on.
“I’m glad. I’m the one who told Steve he could date you.”
“Wait,” you narrowed your eyes at him, “did he ask for permission?”
“No, I just told him that if I had to choose someone from the station to date you, I’d pick him.”
“Oooooh, so you picked him for me?” You scoffed, eyeing him while you added the dries in a little at a time.
“No, no, nothing like that. You can make your own decisions, but you’re a good person, and I wanted you to be with a good man. Besides, Steve is an old fashion guy, and with Dad not around anymore to ask, I figured I was the next best choice since I am the eldest.”
“And Loki was okay with your decision.” You scraped the bowl, adding in the chocolate chips and turning the mixer back on.
“Well...I didn't ask him per se, but I think he would agree with me on this,” Thor stated, taking a sip of his beer.
“But, when have either of you agreed on anything...ever?” You turned off the machine, taking the bowl off, and started scraping the dough off the paddle. “Besides, you know I can make my own decisions right. I’m an adult.”
“Yes, of course,” he chuckled, playing around with the cookie scoop until it flew out of his hand and skimmed across the kitchen island. “Of course.” He nodded.
“Says the man child, playing with a cookie scoop,” you snorted, shaking your head.
The last batch of cookies was in the oven, and the rest were cooling on sheets of newspaper. It wasn’t uncommon for you to get a few stares when you made cookies with an audience, but every time you made them with your mom, she’d use a spatula to get them off the pan and then place them on newspaper. You didn’t want to break that little tradition you got from her.
Thor plopped down on a stool at your small island. “Why did I have to scoop them all?” Thor asked, taking a sip of his beer.
“They’re for your job, I’m not going to do all the work,” you sassed, shaking your head, forcing him to crack a side smile. “Now you wash, and I’ll dry.”
“Do I have to? I just sat down,” he asked with a slight frown.
“Yes,” you stated as he groaned, standing up and making his way to the sink.
He let out a loud sigh, turning on the faucet, and narrowing his eyes in your direction. You stuck out your tongue at him while you continued to put ingredients away. He sighed loudly again, and you gave him the side-eye as he leaned against the counter, watching the suds magically appear in the water. “I’m happy for you.”
“Okay?” You replied more in a question than a statement. You narrowed your eyes at him, not knowing where that came from.
“It’s nice to see you smiling and having fun again. You know, putting yourself out there. It’s nice having the sister I grew up with back. I’ve missed her.” He stood up straight, cracking a child-like smile at you.
“Me too,” you smirked, leaning against the counter.
He turned back to the sink, placing a few dishes in, and started washing them before placing them on the drying rack. It was weird to watch him do civilized things because he never did them when he was younger. When he left New York, the annoying older brother you grew up with started taking responsibility for his actions. While most actions not involving his nightly escapades. You take a sip of your beer, grabbing a clean cloth to dry, and start putting the dishes away.
“I filed for divorce yesterday,” you mentioned, hearing Thor drop what he was washing into the sink.
He placed his hands on the edge of the sink, clenching his jaw at the sudsy sink.
“He’s going to know where you are. Are you okay with taking that risk?” He inquired, scratching at the short beard on his face, turning to you.
“I know it’s a risk, but the only way I am ever gonna feel free of him…is to be free of him.”
He nodded, clearing his throat. “Are you going to feel safe here? Cause I can take the couch and stay for a few days. I can take work off and…”
“Thor, Thor,” you interrupted, placing your hand on his upper arm. “I’ll be okay.”
“I know, I just… I want… I want to make sure you’re safe.”
“I know, and I will be,” you smiled at him, giving his arm a reassuring squeeze.
“Is Steve gonna come and stay with you?”
“I don’t know, maybe.” You shrugged, keeping a close eye on your brother; his bottom lip trembled as his eyes darted in all directions. “Is everything alright?”
He nodded his head aggressively. “Yeah, I’m fine. Totally fine,” he stated in a high-pitched voice, laughing it off.  “But um…I think it would be better if someone stayed here with you, so I know… so we--we all know you’re safe,” he stumbled over his words, wringing his hands together. “Have you at least talked to Loki? What does he think? Does he want me to stay with you?” He asked, rambling on in one breath.
“I was going to call him tonight and let him know,” you informed softly, trying to calm him down. “Thor--” his worried-filled eyes connected with yours “--I’ll be okay. Okay?” You gave him a reassuring nod. “I know after what happened before...that you blame yourself or you feel like you failed, but you didn’t. I don’t blame you for what happened because it wasn’t any of your doing. I put myself in that situation, and I continued to go back.”
“But, I could have gotten you out of that situation. I am the eldest, and I should’ve done a better job at protecting you, or at the very least, listening to you. I shouldn’t have taken Billy’s side, and for that, I blame myself,” he sniffled, clearing his throat.
“Thor--” you rubbed his arm, making him look at you “--Billy is and will always be a master manipulator. We all fell for it…”
“Loki didn’t. He saw right through the man,” Thor tried to reason, raising his eyebrows.
“But he didn’t stop me from going back to Billy. I mean, he tried, but Billy already had me wrapped around his finger.” You paused, biting your lip. “There is no sense in playing the blame game when the only person we should be blaming is Billy.” Thor opened his mouth to say something, but you continued. “You’ve helped me more these last few months than you will ever realize. Don’t think about the past and how you could’ve helped me, but think about right now, and how you did help me. I still don’t know how to thank you for it.”
“You can thank me by letting someone stay with you for a couple of weeks.”
“Wow...we’re still on that,” you scoffed, forcing a trembling chuckle out of him. “I know open communication was never our family's forte, but I love you, brother.”
“Love you, too, sis,” he smiled, leaning towards you and pulling you into a hug.
___________
You walked into the station through the open garage doors, noticing the spotless, shiny red trucks glistening in the sun, bringing a sense of ease over you and a smile to your face. This place felt like a second home that came with a family that you didn’t know you needed. You spotted Steve helping a few guys set up chairs in front of a portable tv while others set up tables for interactive activities for the kids to participate in. There were even goody bags with plastic red firemen hats and the treat table that continued to grow.
“YN, I see you got talked into making something, too?” You looked over to see Nat, holding a pan of brownies, and you lifted your two containers of cookies. “I swear these boys wouldn't survive without us. I mean, Val and Carol would be safe, but the boys.” She shot you a tight smile, shaking her head.
“Agreed,” you chuckled.
“And there is my nerd now, I’ll be back,” she winked, walking over to Bucky. She handed him the brownies, and he leaned down and kissed her ever so gently.
“It’s disgusting, isn't it?” You looked to your right to see Sam with his arms crossed, rolling his eyes.
“I think it’s kind of sweet,” You chuckled, rubbing your lips together and glancing at them one more time. Steve caught your eye, and a sweet smile broke across his face. “You’ll find someone, Sam. You’re such a catch.”
“Uh-huh,” he grunted.
“Would some cookies help?” You offered, handing him the containers.
“Yes.” Sam grinned his gap-tooth smile, taking the container. “Thank you, YN. This is why you’re my favorite.” He took a bite out of one of the cookies, walking away, holding it up in the air. “The best batch yet.”
Steve shook his head at a grinning Sam, walking over to you, and pulled you into a hug. You giggled into his chest, wrapping your arms around your waist, and he started swaying back and forth. You rested your chin on his chest, staring up at him. He leaned down, giving you a quick peck on the lips.
“How did Bucky and Steve get girls like that?” Sam asked Val at the treat table.
“I guess some people just get lucky.” Val shrugged, and Sam angrily took a bite out of another cookie.
“Want some ice cream?”
“Yes, I want all the ice cream,” Sam added, following Val to the break room.
“Question--” Steve stopped swaying and pulled away from you “--do you have any plans for tonight?”
“No, why do you have something planned,” he teased, shooting you his signature smirk.
“Maybe.”
“What are we doing?”
“I’m afraid that is classified, but I have something for you.” You reached into your purse, pulling out a manila folder, handing it to him.
Steve narrowed his eyes in curiosity. He opened the folder, his eyes scanning it over. “Divorce papers. This is a big step, YN,” He smiled at you, but it quickly dropped to concern. “Billy is going to know where you are.”
“I know, but I feel like it is time to put the past behind me and move on with my life.”
“Okay, as long as you’re ready, then I’m here for you with whatever you need.”
“I know,” you smiled shyly.
“Isn’t it amazing?” Thor clasped a hand on Steve’s shoulder.
“Yeah, I’m proud of her,” Steve winked, making your smile spread wider.
“As am I,” Thor smiled, squeezing Steve’s shoulder.
You shake your head at them. “I better get to my shift, but Sam has the cookies, and I want my containers back ASAP, or I am going to hurt you, Thor.” You stated, walking backwards.
“I’ll make sure they are in your possession tonight.” Thor saluted, making you shake your head.
“Have a good shift, YN. I’ll see you tonight.”
“Just know this, Steve, if you hurt my little sister, we will have more than words,” Thor stated, squeezing Steve’s shoulder a little harder watching you walk out of the station with Nat by your side.
Steve nodded, turning to him. “I don’t intend to.”
“Good man.” Thor patted him on the shoulder, giving him a closed-mouth smile. “Before she met you, she was lost in her own little world. Fighting the beast, invading her dreams, and trying to tackle her own troubles. She thought she could only rely on herself to make the important choices but soon realized she had supporters, like you and me. So, thank you, Steve, for helping bring my sister back.”
Steve nodded to Thor as the tall man went back to help the group set up.
“Did he threaten you?” Bucky asked with a breathy laugh, coming over to him.
“Ahh…yeah…sort of….I think.” Steve's eyebrows knit together, trying to figure out what exactly just happened. “But, I’m gonna make a quick call.”
“Do your thing, pal?” Bucky patted him on the shoulder and went over to help the group finish up.
Steve took out his phone until he found the name he was looking for; He brought it to his ear as soon as it started to ring.
“Hey, Steve. How’s it going?”
“I’m good. Listen, I’m not going to be able to play pool tonight. I got a...I  got a date,” Steve smiled at his own words, scratching at his beard.
“Oh, is this the one you have been kind of seeing?”
“Yeah, YN.”
“Good for you, man.”
“Thanks, but I gotta get back to work. I’ll see you later.”
“I have a feeling we’ll see each other soon. Have a good night, Steve.”
“Bye, Jig,” Steve smiled, sliding the phone back into his pocket, and headed over to finish getting everything ready for fire safety.
__________
The team stood by one of the open garage doors in anticipation for the first group of young students and their teachers to arrive. The workout room was transformed into a small teaching area, complete with fold-out chairs and a roll-away tv. Snacks and goody bags were also waiting for them with a welcoming banner hanging from the second-story loft.
Steve let out a deep breath with his hands on his hips, eyeing at what they were able to accomplish.  It looked very welcoming, but he didn’t know what was going to happen. He liked kids but wasn’t always great at talking to them, but Carol reassured them that the first group of students might not go as planned, but they had another six to make up for it.
“First group approaching,” Sam shouted, going over to the door to greet them. Sam shook the teacher's hand, flashing her his famous gap-tooth smile.
Bucky scoffed beside Steve, gripping his shoulder. “Don’t be nervous, pal. Just avoid swearing or talking about anything too scary. Kids think we are badasses, and they look up to us. We are heroes to them.”
Steve swallowed, nodding at him. He rubbed his hands together, taking in the twenty little kids, grabbing snacks, and taking their seats while Carol stood in front of them with a huge smile.
“How’s everyone doing today?” Carol asked, earning a group of students shouting while others remained silent. “I’m glad to hear it. My name is Captain Carol Danvers, but you can call me Ace, and I am in charge of Station 107. Those wearing the dark blue shirts around you are my teammates.” She pointed to Sam, who then introduced himself as they went around the room. “Now that you know my team, what are your names?”
The teachers introduced themselves before the kids went around the room saying their names. Steve stood off to the side, nodding his head, trying to remember every kid’s name. His eyes stopped on one familiar little girl, Morgan Stark. She caught his eye, and she waved with an exciting smile on her face. He nodded at her, mimicking her expression on his face. Steve noticed she also waved at Sam. Seeing her brought back the memory of his first encounter with YN and losing his dispatcher cherry while saving Morgan from the electrified pool in the process.
“Do any of you know the number to call in case someone needs help?” Danvers asked, bringing Steve's attention back to the present. Hands flew into the air, including Morgans. Danvers pointed to one of the students, and he replied with 911.
Steve zoned out as Danvers continued to talk with the young kids. His eyes traveled around the room, noticing how some of the teachers would catch his eye but then quickly look away. He smirked, realizing Thor and YN weren’t kidding when they said the teachers would flirt with them. Thor winked at one of them, and she blushed, unable to keep the smile off her face. Steve shook his head at them, returning his attention to Danvers.
“....when you dial 911, your call gets directed to a dispatcher, and they use a system called CAD, which is a computer-aided dispatch. They punch the address you give them in, and the dispatcher can figure out what unit is closest for them to send help. Now, how many of you know your address?” A few hands shot up, and Carol nodded. “It’s okay if you don’t just go home and talk to your parents about it. They love to watch you learn and would be more than willing to help.” She nodded, clasping her hands together. “We are going to watch a quick safety video and then break off into groups and do a few different activities and see some cool things. How’s that sound?” She got a few cheers from the students while the others kept quiet. Danvers smiled, switching the tv on and pushing play on the DVD player, before stepping off to the side.
The kids broke off into four smaller groups; Bucky and Steve took their group around, showing them different trucks, and explained their purpose. Steve couldn’t help but smile when the kids’ faces brightened up upon seeing the inside of the trucks. They did their best to explain what some of the equipment inside was, but most of the kids seemed too excited to listen. According to Bucky, kids like seeing the trucks and could care less about the other activities they had set up.
The first group's time was coming to an end, and the team could see the next class approaching in the distance. The team handed out gift bags, and all the kids were smiling and putting on their red plastic hats. The teachers told the students to say thank you, and they did so in unison before they retreated towards the door.
Steve stood by the entrance waving goodbye to the previous class, awaiting to greet the next class. He felt a tug on his pants, and he looked down to see Morgan smiling up at him.
“Hey, shouldn’t you be up there with your partner?” He leaned down to her eye level, resting a knee on the ground.
“She is waiting,” she pointed to her, and Steve smirked, seeing her waiting impatiently. “Besides, my teacher is still talking to the tall one.”
He glanced over to see the tall one was Thor, and he was doing the thing he always did. “Look at that, you’re right.” He nodded. “What can I do for you, Morgan?”
“I wanted to give you this--” she handed him a homemade card “--the tall one helped me make it at the coloring table.” She rocked back and forth on her feet and blushed.
“Aww, thank you.” He opened the card, reading: Thank you, Fireman Steve, for saving me, and it was an image of her in a pool with him on one side and Sam was on the other. “You’re welcome. I like it. You are quite the artist.”
She smiled. “I gave one to Fireman Sam, too.” She pointed at him with a smile.
“I’m sure he loved it, too.” Steve smiled at it. “I'm going to have to put this on my fridge at home.” He chuckled, and in an instance, the little girl wrapped her little arms around her neck and pulled him close. He patted her on the back and pulled away. “Stay out of trouble, and don’t get into any more electrified pools.”
She shot him a funny look. “You too,” she smiled, running over to her partner.
Her teacher passed by him, folding a piece of paper and sliding it into her pocket, which Steve could only assume to be Thor's number. He shook his head, looking back at Thor to see him staring at her retreating figure.
Thor caught Steve's eye, and he shrugged. “What? I like women, but you know, not in a creepy way.”
After the first class came through, the rest of the groups were easy; having got the lay-of-the-land and knowing what to say. Although towards the end of the day, the older kids, the 2nd graders, asked more daring questions, in which Steve tried to keep it G or PG.
“And with that, class is dismissed,” Danvers stated, plopping down in one of the fold-up chairs, sighing loudly.
“Hear, hear,” Sam nodded, plopping down next to her. “It’s the repetition that gets me. I could go home and fall asleep right now. Who knew kids could be so exhausting. I praise the teachers cause I know I couldn’t put up with their shit all the time.” Everyone murmured in agreement.
“How are you all tired?” Thor asked with his hands on his hips.
“We weren’t at the coloring station. We were explaining and answering questions trying to keep things kid-friendly.”
“Well, you should’ve been. In my opinion, it’s the best station.”
“No, the trucks are, the arts and crafts station is the boring table. The kids were talking about it,” Bucky added, folding up a few chairs.
“Doesn’t matter, I got a few numbers. And...” he walked over to the snack table, taking the last of YN cookies “--I got the last cookie,” he chuckled, taking a bite.
“Let’s quit complaining about what activity was better and remember it was about teaching the kids,” Danvers stated. “Now, let’s get this cleaned up, so the crew can do their job tonight.” Everyone mumbled, nodding in agreement.
Thor snapped the container to your Tupperware shut, shoving the last bite of cookie in his mouth. “I could drop off the Tupperware tonight if you’d like. I’m meeting up with her after her shift,” Steve offered, packing up the leftover snacks.
“Yes, I suppose you could, but if they go missing and she doesn’t get them. This all comes back to me, and I don’t need that on my conscience right now.”
“Probably a good idea you do it then,” Steve chuckled.
____________
Standing in front of the mirror, you try to get your hair to do a thing, but it isn’t doing the thing, so you decide to leave it as is. A buzzing sound at the front door brings an excited smile to your face. You trotted down the stairs, seeing Steve and Cosmo at the gate. You buzzed them in and went into the kitchen to grab two wine glasses and a bottle from your stash. You set them on the kitchen island, hearing Cosmo barking on the other side of the door. You smirked to yourself, walking over to the front door, remembering Steve mentioning how much Cosmo missed you. It was utter nonsense, but you couldn’t help but smile. You opened the front door, and your smile quickly disappeared.
“Billy.”
“Hi, honey. Did you miss me?”
_________
AN: Thanks for reading part 15! Those pesky cliffhangers! Where did Billy come from? Has he been watching her this whole time? Hmmmm....any theories?! And of course, all of this had to happen when things between her and Steve were finally going forward. It's almost like I planned it! Muwahaha! And speaking of Steve...what could’ve happened to him and Cosmo? Besides the ending, did you like Thor and her little chitchat, the brother-sister bonding sesh. We did learn that Thor clearly still blames himself for what happened way back then, but maybe now after their little chat, he will finally start forgiving himself, but who knows with the current revelation happening! 😬 And Val and Carol, did anyone guess that happening?! Also, did you enjoy fire safety day?! I thought it would be a good throwback to the first chapter and bring Morgan back, and I thought it would just be cute seeing the team trying to keep things G/PG when talking about their job. Haha! Better prepare yourself for the next couple chapters, cause things are going get deep! As always thanks for reading, comments always welcome!

HC: M’baku/Sam taking the readers virginity.
18+ PLEASE
I have one for M’Baku here so I’ll do Sam
But I see Sam as being very gentle
Like imagine you two have talked about it before in the early stages of dating
You’re kinda worried that he’d think something is wrong with you because you’re in your mid-30’s and you’ve never had sex
But he doesn’t care
He just wants to make sure you’re comfortable and that you’re ready
I imagine that it could go two ways
Tumblr media
The first way: Planned
You’ve been thinking about telling Sam that you're ready to have sex with him for a while.
One day, you decide to invite him over and cook a nice dinner
When he arrives, you’re wearing your usual date night clothes and you offer him a drink
While the two of you are cooking (because he never lets you cook alone) your nervousness is radiating off you, and you know that Sam can feel it
Once you two are done with dinner, you excuse yourself to your room
When you come back, you’re clad in a new lingerie set
Sam blinks at you slowly as he lets out a long breath
“Y/N,” he whispers as you approach him
“I’ve been thinking, Sam,” you say as you straddle his lap. “And I know that I’ve never done this before, but I’m ready and I want to share this experience with you.”
Sam’s hands roamed your body as you spoke and his eyes never left yours
“Y/n,” he sighed deeply again, “only if you’re sure.”
“I’m sure, Sam,” you whispered.
You squeaked when he suddenly stood, forcing you to wrap your legs around his waist as he carried you to your bedroom.
The second way: Unplanned
The two of you have been together all day running errands and teasing each other
His hands constantly running down your sides,
you pulling him in for random kisses or sending him raunchy photos from your trips from inside the dressing room
Him whispering in your ear or staring at you while biting his lip
You’d finally had enough by the time you got back to your place
When he finished helping you bring in your bags, you made sure the front door was closed before you jumped on him
He dad his fingers buried in your curls as you kissed him
Your hands found their way under his shirt and you only pulled away from him to pull his shirt off
He helped you step out of your dress before he turned you around so your back was pressed against the wall
“I wanted your first time to be in a bed, Y/n” Sam mumbled against your lips
“I don’t really care about a bed, Sam. I just want you,” you moaned as he began to slide in slowly
Your breath hitched as you felt him fill you
The both of you froze the moment he was fully inside of you
You locked eyes with him and he leaned in to give you another kiss
You hitched your leg up higher on his waist, and he slowly began to pull out of you.
He pulled back from the kiss to take in the look on your face
Your body immediately mourned the loss and you whined causing him to smirk as he pushed back into you
“Fuck, do you know how good you feel?” he asked, his voice filled with lust as he slowly pumped into you
“Sam,” you whined. You couldn't think about anything else but him.
His pace quickened a bit causing you to whine even louder
You wrapper your arms tighter around him, you wanted him closer
Sam dipped his head and bit where your shoulder and neck met, adding a bit of pain to your pleasure.
“Fuck,” you exclaim. You tighten around him as you cum.
He continues fucking you through your orgasm, chasing his own.
“I’m… Sam, I'm not on any birth control!” you pant as he fucks into you.
“You want me to pull out?” his strokes become harder, but he maintains his pace.
“Please don’t,” you begged
“You want me to cum in you?” he asked. His question went straight to your pussy and you tightened around him once again.
“Yeah, you do. You want me to fill you up, don’t you?” he continued
You nodded
“Say it, y/n”
You locked eyes with him before you spoke. “I want you to cum in me.”
Sam’s eyes lit up and his hips stuttered when those words fell from your lips
He buried himself deep inside of you as he painted our walls with his cum
Sam was the first to recover and he moved so that both of your legs were secured around his waist before he gently carried you to your bed.
It didn’t slip past you that he was still hard inside of you and that’s when you realized that you may have awoken a monster.
But you didn’t mind one bit.

CW: smut

Monae fiddled with JJ’s collar as they stood on the tarmac waiting for the Talon to touch down. He loved seeing Uncle Challa’s “spaceship” and they regularly got to see him off and welcome him back. This time would be a little different though since he would be bringing M’Baku to meet his son for the first time. Monae’s nerves were shot and she vibrated with anticipation.
As the ship came into view a lump caught in Monae’s throat. She was about to see him again for the first time in years...he was about to meet their son. She could still barely process the fact that he was alive and almost needed to see it to believe it, but he was just a few moments away.
The Talon floated closer and closer to the ground and her palms grew sweaty when it finally made contact.
JJ jumped up and down as the doors opened and he saw Okoye and Ayo exit the craft. He immediately went to go hug his aunties as he waited for his favorite uncle to come out. Pretty soon he emerged, alone, and JJ ran to him and jumped in his arms.
“Uncle Challa!”
“Igorila encinci, I’ve missed you! Are you being good for your mama?”
“Yes!” T’Challa raised an eyebrow and looked back to Monae who was steadily creeping closer. She nodded with a smile and T’Challa started tickling JJ, making him let loose the boisterous laugh he no doubt got from his father.
Monae’s eyes travelled to the open door behind T’Challa and he noticed, giving her a soft smile. “He needs a minute.”
She nodded and looked down, twiddling her thumbs when JJ’s voice brought her out of her daze.
“Uncle Challa, who’s that?” he looked over the king’s shoulder and saw a large man hesitantly stepping through the Talon door and into the light. T’Challa set JJ down and turned to look at Monae, but her eyes were already raining tears down her face.
“That is my friend, M’Baku. Why don’t you say hi?”
M’Baku walked down the ramp and met the king on the ground, unable to take his eyes off the little boy in front of him. He looked just like a miniature version of him with a head full of locs. The pictures didn’t do him justice.
JJ waved at the stranger and introduced himself, “Hi! I’m Jabari, but everyone calls me JJ. What’s your name?”
M’Baku’s eyes grew misty as his child smiled up at him. He cleared his throat and got down on one knee so he could be eye-level with JJ.
“My name is M’Baku, and I am-” he cut himself off, as he looked up and made eye contact with a crying Monae behind T’Challa. The king moved out of the way and gave the little family some privacy, joining his Dora near the car and trying not to be nosy and watch too intently. Monae took a step forward and that was all the permission he needed. He stood from the ground, and just as he did she threw her arms around him, crying into his chest. His head rested on top of hers as he cried and rocked her from side to side.
“Mommy? What’s wrong?” M’Baku wiped Monae’s tears before she turned to their son and squatted down to his height.
“JJ, baby...remember how mommy told you your daddy died before you were born?”
He nodded his head silently with his brows furrowed.
“Well I was wrong...and Uncle Challa was nice enough to bring him here to us,” she looked to M’Baku and smiled, but he couldn’t take his eyes off his son.
“You’re my dad?”
“Yes, you can call me ‘baba’ if you like.”
“Baba? What’s that mean?”
“It means ‘father’ in my language.”
“What language is that?”
“Xhosa.”
“Oh, like Umalume Challa.”
M’Baku smiled up at Monae, “He knows Xhosa?”
“T’Challa taught him some, he’s pretty good. He’s even teaching me a little bit.”
“Yeah, she’s a fast learner like me!”
“That’s right,” she tickled his sides and his infectious laughter rang out again, the most beautiful song M’Baku had ever heard. When he came down from his tickle high his eyes settled back on M’Baku.
“So if you weren’t dead where were you?”
“I do not know…”
“Baby, you remember the other day when people started appearing out of nowhere?” he nodded again, “That’s what happened to your baba.”
He still didn’t really understand just what actually happened with those people, but knowing his baba had been one of them and wasn’t dead or just gone for no reason eased his mind.
Both adults stood and Monae grabbed JJ’s hand as they walked back towards T’Challa, who was trying really hard to not seem like he was eavesdropping. JJ reached up and grabbed M’Baku’s hand and all the adults present struggled to keep their composure.
--------
Every time the Wakandans came to town, they stopped by Monae’s house for dinner at least once, so the group split in two as they got in their cars to drive to Monae’s. Monae could hardly speak, so she was thankful that JJ was full of questions on the ride home.
“So do I have grandparents?”
“Yes, and my mama would love to meet you.”
“How is Ada?”
“Shaken up...she was also one of the Dusted.”
“The Dusted?” JJ asked.
“Yes, that is what we Jabari call the people who disappeared and reappeared.”
“I thought your name was M’Baku, not Jabari.”
M’Baku chuckled.
“It is, but I come from the Jabari people. In fact, I am the-”
Monae cleared her throat and subtly shook her head.
“-I am...excited for you to meet them.”
“What are they like?”
M’Baku and JJ went back and forth the entire ride home as Monae drove in a daze, her brain still trying to process being so close to M’Baku again. The drive only took about ten minutes and as they pulled up to the house M’Baku’s eyes scanned the neighborhood, taking it all in. He saw the colonizers walking their dogs by the old drunks outside the corner store, and he noticed the expensive cookie cutter townhouses right next to the smaller, old homes that had been there for decades. This was definitely not the Nashville Monae had told him about.
M’Baku couldn't help but smile as they walked into her house and he felt the same warmth and openness he felt in her apartment all those years ago. Monae headed straight for the kitchen to check on the vegetable gumbo she had going in the slow cooker all day while JJ pulled M’Baku into the living room with everyone else. Monae watched with a smile as JJ talked his baba’s ear off and showed him around, pointing out the pictures on the wall. M’Baku’s eyes wandered over the photos, but he was distracted by a loud “meow” and a paw on his pants leg.
“Juju, old friend.” He reached down to pet her and she moved away from his hand, choosing instead to go back the way she came.
“Don’t be sad, she does that sometimes,” JJ comforted his dad, whose jaw was hanging open in disbelief until he heard the tinkling of a bell. Sure enough, Juju trotted back in and dropped her favorite feather toy at M’Baku’s feet. “Hey, she likes you!”
The three of them played together for a couple minutes, all the while M’Baku kept an eye on Monae slowly pacing back and forth in the kitchen. JJ chased Juju off through the house and M’Baku took the moment to try to talk to Monae while everyone was preoccupied setting the table and securing the perimeter of the house.
Monae stirred the gumbo and tried her best to calm her nerves, but the butterflies in her stomach weren’t going away any time soon. They weren’t helped by the heat that crept up against her back as a large shadow loomed over her. She turned around to face him and he tipped her chin up.
“Is there anything I can do?”
“I...um, it’s already done.”
“You are nervous...why?”
“M’Baku,” she sighed, “I need you to understand that you died, or I thought you were dead. I mourned you. I buried you in my mind and visit on your deathiversary every year...but you crawled back out of that grave and it’s just hard for me to wrap my mind around.”
He nodded and placed a kiss on her forehead before moving back and giving her space. Monae cleared her throat and shook herself from her daze. She needed to get a handle on herself and fast.
“JJ, come wash your hands.”
The little boy came sprinting from the back room.
“No running inside,” Monae and T’Challa echoed each other and JJ slowed down, sheepishly walking the rest of the way to the stepstool at the kitchen sink. M’Baku helped him wash his hands as Monae filled their bowls with rice and gumbo. She grabbed a bottle of hot sauce from the counter and placed it in the middle of the table before sitting down at the head.
“So, T, how’s Nakia?”
“She’s doing well. This pregnancy has been much easier on her than the first. In fact, she and the twins will be coming back with me next time.”
“Really?!” JJ was excited to see his play cousins, it had been months since the last time Hasina and Hasani visited. They were only a few months older than him, and the three of them were inseparable whenever they got together.
M’Baku sat back and watched their interactions, feeling slightly left out. He had missed so much of their lives. What was her pregnancy like? What were his first words? He just had to know. Right as he worked up the nerve to interrupt the ongoing conversation, JJ did it for him.
“Baba?”
M’Baku was still so unused to hearing that name, however he already loved how it sounded.
“Yes, JJ?”
“So what did it feel like when you got Dusted?”
Monae almost choked on her gumbo.
“JJ, let’s not-”
“I did not even know I had gone anywhere...it felt like no time had passed.”
“So you...you really think it’s been two months since we last saw each other?” Monae asked him.
“Yes, although I know now that is not the case,” he smiled at JJ who gave him a snaggletoothed smile right back. He turned to T’Challa, his face turning serious. “Thank you for looking after them, brother.”
“Any time, they are family. Isn’t that right igorila encinci?”
“Yes!”
Monae chuckled as she got up to bring out his favorite pineapple upside down cake she made late the night before. She disappeared into the kitchen as the others continued to talk amongst themselves.
“You call him ‘little gorilla’, eh?”
“Well yes, he is your son.”
“Do they call you the ‘Big Gorilla’ or something?”
“No, I am the Great Gorilla, ruler of the Jabari-”
“You’re a king, too?!”
“What?!” Monae yelled from the kitchen.
Okoye, Ayo, and T’Challa all made eye contact and decided it was a good time to leave.
“Well, we do not want to intrude so we will see you tomorrow,” Okoye rushed out.
“Monae, do you need any help cleaning up or anything before we leave?” Ayo added.
“No thank you. Y’all get to the hotel safe, see you tomorrow.” She and JJ hugged the three of them and they took their leave. As soon as Monae closed the door behind them, JJ went right back to the previous conversation.
“So if you’re a king, that makes me a prince!”
“JJ, go upstairs and start getting ready for bed, I’ll be up soon.”
He sighed, but did what his mom told him, but before he made it all the way up the stairs he turned around and asked, “Is baba staying?”
Monae turned to look at M’Baku questioningly.
“If your mother will have me.”
“Please mommy!”
“No need for all that, I want him to stay too,” she laughed as her son ran back down the stairs to hug them both before going up to his room.
“So you want me to stay?”
Monae rolled her eyes. “You shouldn’t have told him he’s a prince, M’Baku.”
“Why not? He is a prince, he should know.”
The two of them cleared the table and loaded the dishwasher as they went back and forth.
“He’s too young, that’s why. I want him to have a normal life.”
“He is not a ‘normal’ boy, Monae, he is royalty. He is my heir.”
She knew he was right, but she just didn’t want to let go of the life she and JJ had that she knew now was about to  be turned on its head. She didn’t want to have the conversation that she knew they needed to have.
“Let’s put JJ to bed and then come back to this.”
M’Baku agreed and the two of them went upstairs to do just that. After JJ’s bath, M’Baku told him the story of how the Jabari found the mountains, and he was hanging on every word until sleep overtook him and he passed out around 8:30.
Monae was almost moved to tears by their interaction, and she kept from sniffling as both adults crept out the room and back downstairs. She went straight to the wine rack and cracked open a merlot, pouring two generous glasses for the two of them. He grabbed her hand and led her to the couch, sitting down next to her and pulling her legs across his lap. She didn’t know what to do, her mind still hadn’t caught up with her body yet, but her body melted right into him.
“I know it has not been as long for me as it has for you...but I have missed you, Babygirl.”
M’Baku heard a sniffle and looked down at her as her body shook and tears escaped her eyes. He grabbed the wine glass from her and set both glasses on the coffee table in front of them before placing his arm around her and pulling her in tight.
The next hour or so consisted of M’Baku consoling Monae as she released five years of grief she had been holding onto. After a while, she calmed down and they sat in silence before she tore herself away from his lap and took a deep breath. She looked into his eyes and he moved in for a kiss, but she pulled away at the last second.
“So what now?” She asked and his eyebrows furrowed as she spoke.
“What do you mean?”
“JJ...since he’s a prince and all.”
M’Baku took a sip of his previously untouched wine, prompting Monae to do the same.
“He will need to come be with his people, Monae.”
“He has people here too, M’Baku. He has friends and a community here.”
“So what do you suggest?”
“Coparenting.”
“Coparenting?”
“Yes. I don’t want him to lose his home here or keep him from his home there...so lets let him have both.”
“I do not want you two halfway around the world-”
“And I don’t want him so far away from me, but parenthood involves sacrifice. Welcome to the club.”
“Then come with him.”
--------
“She is being unreasonable!” M’Baku sat on the couch in T’Challa’s office, complaining to the king and queen. He had stayed with Monae for only a weekend since he needed to get back to ruling his kingdom that was still restructuring after the return of the Dusted, but in that short time he was unable to convince her to let JJ live with his people.
“I think she was being more than generous. I don’t even like when T’Challa takes the twins with him to America without me , I can’t imagine being without them for any longer than that.”
“Yes, but she could just move here! And at first she said we would split our time 50/50, now she wants to keep him during the school year and I get summers.”
“You’d prefer to disrupt the boy’s education?” the king chimed in.
“Oh please, we both know he would have a much better education here anyway.”
“True, but you’re asking Monae to uproot her whole life,” T’Challa added.
“M’Baku, you need to look at this like a parent, not like a chief. He’s just a little boy, he’s her little boy-”
“Our little boy.”
“For like five minutes. She’s been there for five years. She’s kissed his wounds and weathered temper tantrums. She pushed that boy out in the middle of her living room, she caught her own baby despite the fact that the midwife was right there. It’s just been the two of them since her aunt died...you can’t just expect her to give in so easily. You’re asking a lot of her.”
“Maybe if they both came to visit it would ease her mind a little,” T’Challa suggested.
“Could the two of you try to talk to her?”
“Absolutely not,” Nakia said as T’Challa shook his head.
“This is between the two of you, my friend.”
“Uncle Challa and Aunt Kiki are sitting this one out, sorry.” Nakia’s hands raised in surrender.
“Aunt Kiki?”
“I couldn’t let him be the only one with a nickname.”
M’Baku nodded as he mulled over their conversation in his head. He felt they were probably right, but he needed one more opinion.
When M’Baku made it back to Jabari land he went straight to his mother’s quarters to seek her advice. He found her in the middle of braiding her hair, and sat across from her as she worked.
“So how is my grandson? Did you bring me pictures?”
“Of course, mama,” he pulled up pictures of JJ on his beads, swiping through and smiling like a fool as he looked at his son. “He is well. He is so inquisitive and joyous...Monae has done a good job on her own.”
“Of course she has, I always liked that one.”
“I know,” M’Baku chuckled before his face fell.
“What is it?”
“It is Monae...she wants to coparent. She would have him during the school year and I would have him during their summer break.”
“That sounds pretty good to me.”
M’Baku sighed and hung his head.
“That is what the queen said.”
“Smart woman, our queen.”
“That she is...mama, I do not want to be apart from him so much, but Monae refuses to move here. I do not know what to do.”
“It sounds to me like you will be making a lot more trips to America then. She never said you could not see him, just that he stays in America with her. That does not have to exclude you.”
“I have duties here-”
“M’Baku we were gone for five years and the council ran things just fine, and before that you were gone for three months. I am not saying you should move there, just that your job is much more flexible than you realize.”
Meanwhile, on the other side of Wakanda, the king decided to go back on his word just a little and texted Monae and asked her to call him when she had the chance. Later that night, his phone rang and he looked to see it was Monae calling. He checked to make sure he was alone in his quarters before answering. Thankfully, Nakia was down the hall putting the twins to bed while he worked on some last minute paperwork, or she’d have his head for this.
“Monae, I’m glad you called. How are you today?”
“I’d be much better if the city wasn’t breathing down our necks about this block party.”
“I’ll handle them, don’t worry about it.”
“Thanks T.”
“No problem.”
“So what’s up? It sounded important.”
“Yes, well, it is. I spent the earlier half of today listening to a certain chief bemoan his new custody arrangement.”
“You can’t talk me out of it. I don’t even want him gone during the summer, that was hard enough.”
“I wouldn’t dare. I would dare, however, to formally invite you to Wakanda. Come see it for yourself for a couple weeks, you might like it. If nothing else, it will ease your mind for when Jabari comes here by himself.”
“Me...come to Wakanda? What about my job?”
“Don’t worry about that, just worry about when you want to leave. We can have a jet there immediately if you wish.”
“Jazz is moving in on Saturday, how about next weekend?”
“Next weekend it is.”
“Can we keep this between us? I want to surprise him.”
T’Challa chuckled just as Nakia walked in the room, “It won’t be easy to keep from him.”
“Try your best.” She knew there was a good chance T’Challa would let it slip to M’Baku. Everyone knew the king was notoriously bad at keeping secrets.
He looked up and saw Nakia standing in front of him with her eyebrow raised and a hand on her hip, her belly protruding in her nightgown. He mouthed “Monae” and pointed to his phone.
“You just couldn't help but meddle, eh?” She rolled her eyes.
“Is that Nakia? Hey Kiki girl, I miss you!” T’Challa moved the phone away from his ear before she blew his eardrums out.
“Hey Nae! Is my husband meddling in your business?”
“Only a little, but it’s good. Thanks to him, I’ll be seeing you soon.”
“You're coming to Wakanda?! Oh thank Bast, now I don’t have to hear M’Baku-”
“It’s just for a couple weeks, sis,” Monae chuckled as Nakia deflated.
“Well that’s better than nothing.”
“Keep it between us though.”
“So you tell him?” Nakia laughed as her husband looked at her in faux offense.
“It was his idea!” The ladies continued to laugh and talk as T’Challa’s grimace grew.
“Ok, well I know it’s late there, so see y'all in a couple weeks?”
“We’ll be here,” They ended the call and T’Challa looked to the queen, shrugging.
“I couldn’t help myself.”
Nakia laughed and crawled in bed next to her husband, both of them swiftly falling asleep after a long day of ruling a whole country.
--------
JJ was super excited to ride in the Talon, never having seen the inside before, and even though Monae worked around Wakandan technology, she was just as much in awe of the futuristic aircraft as her son. Okoye made sure they were comfortable on their trip, but Monae’s anxiety almost got the best of her. There were times when she almost started hyperventilating, but then JJ’s bright smiling face brought her back out of it. She was leaving the country for the first time in her life and flying in a human spaceship to a formerly hidden African country with technology way more advanced than the rest of the world. If someone had told her ten years ago that this would be her life, she would’ve laughed in their face, yet here she was.
When Okoye called them to the front of the ship to watch them enter the dome, Monae’s heart almost beat out of her chest as they glided through the trees and into Wakanda. The city she saw before her blew her away, it was bigger and more beautiful than New York or Tokyo or any of those other big cities she’d seen or read about. The real life afrofuturism stunned her to silence, and it was only broken when JJ noticed the people waiting for them to land.
“Look, it’s Uncle Challa and Auntie Kiki and Auntie Shuri and Uncle Daka and Hasina and Hasani. Where’s baba? And who's that?”
“Baba isn't here, baby. We’re here to surprise him...and I think that’s T’Challa and Shuri’s mom.”
When the ship touched down and the doors opened, JJ ran out and tackled his play family in hugs and kisses. Monae carefully made her way down the stairs and joined the group, giving hugs all around.
“Long time no see, Nae!” The prince
“How’s Oakland treating you?”
“Much worse now that I have left,” Shuri interjected, making N’Jadaka roll his eyes and mush her face. “Hey!”
“Oakland’s great, running just like before. You should come visit.”
“Only if you visit the Nashville Center.”
“Deal.”
Monae turned to see JJ walk up the one person there she didn’t know.
“Are you Uncle Challa and Auntie Shuri’s mom?”
Queen Mother chuckled and bent down closer to his level, “That I am. And you must be Jabari.”
“Or JJ!”
“Nice to meet you, JJ. My name is Ramonda.”
“Can I call you Auntie too?”
“Of course, you wouldn’t be the first,” she winked at the older prince and he smirked back.
“Monae, dear, I’ve heard so much about you. All good things, of course. How are you?”
“Honestly, Queen Mother, I’m a little nervous to be here.”
“Trust me, you will love Wakanda. And you are family, call me Auntie.”
The group relocated to the domestic wing of the palace as the kids ran ahead and Queen Mother chatted with Monae. T’Challa showed them to their rooms, and allowed them time to get settled in before dinner in an hour.
Monae was nervous, she knew she would see M’Baku at dinner, and since T’Challa has a flair for the dramatic he had planned for her to get there a little late and make an entrance. Well, not a huge entrance, since it would be a small family dinner, but still. She fixed the collar on JJ’s shirt and then smoothed out the front of her purple dress that contrasted beautifully with her pink fade. She took a final breath before reaching for the door handle and being led down the hallway by the palace guards. They arrived at the double doors and Monae froze.
“Mommy?”
“Y-yes baby?”
“Are you ok?”
“I’m just a little nervous, that’s all.”
“Don’t be nervous, it’s just baba.”
His words echoed in her head as she thought back to their time together. It’s just M’Baku, she thought to herself before taking one last breath and opening the doors.
When M’Baku arrived he was confused to see the two extra place settings, and as the food was brought out his confusion only grew. When the doors opened and his eyes met Monae’s he felt his heart drop into his stomach. JJ ran to him and threw his arms around his neck and gave him a kiss on the cheek.
“Hi baba!”
“Hello,” M’Baku chuckled. “What are you two doing here?” He got up and went over to Monae, enclosing her in a hug.
“Someone had the idea that I should surprise you and come see Wakanda for myself. Maybe that way I’ll be less nervous about him coming out here.” Monae took in his traditional attire and tried not to make her infatuation so obvious, but she failed. He looked damn good in his chief furs.
“How long are you here for?”
“Just two weeks.”
“That is all the time I need.”
“For what?”
“To convince you to stay,” he winked and walked her to her seat, pulling it out for her as she fussed at him.
“I never said I was staying, I said we’re here to visit.”
“Tomato, potato,” M’Baku said as Monae almost spit out her drink and half of the table fell out in laughter.
“I think you mean ‘tomayto, tomahto’ my G,” N’Jadaka corrected him with tears in his eyes from laughing so hard.
Monae grabbed M’Baku’s hand and squeezed it before he brought it to his lips for a kiss. She allowed it since she was slowly getting used to him again and he couldn’t be happier.
“So, Monae, how do you like your rooms?”
“They’re so nice! Mine alone is the size of my first floor at home, add in JJ’s and we have the whole house.”
“Wait until you sleep on the bed-”
“Wait, are you not staying with me?”
“Well I didn’t want to assume…”
“You two will always have a place with me. I can have your things moved while we eat, unless you would rather stay here.
Monae was apprehensive about the cold, but she had to remind herself why she was here. Everything was for JJ.
“Ok, we’ll stay with you.”
“Yay!” JJ cheered as a huge gap toothed smile appeared on M’Baku’s face.
--------
“I can’t believe you did this…”
Monae looked around JJ’s room and almost shed a tear.
“I had it set up as soon as I learned I had a child. We can personalize it and change it however he wants, I have interior decorators lined up-”
“M’Baku, it’s perfect. I mean, look at him...look how happy he looks.”
JJ picked up a pretend sword and M’Baku beamed at the future warrior. Monae playfully rolled her eyes as they watched him play-fight with an imaginary assailant.
“I will have to teach him how to fight for real one day, you know?”
Monae sighed, reminding herself yet again that this was all for JJ. “I know.”
“But you do not like it?”
“No, I don’t like the idea of my son running into battle,” Monae snipped before taking a second and centering herself. “I’m sorry, I’m just...I’m trying, ok?”
“I know. Thank you.”
“You’re welcome...so my room?”
“Yes, right next door here.”
He showed her the room and the view from her window stunned her speechless. She could see all of Wakanda.
“This view…”
“The best in all of Wakanda.”
She felt him close behind her and turned around, coming face to face with the Jabari chief.
“Better than yours?”
“No,” he smirked. “Let me show you.”
They checked in on JJ, who had already curled up with a storybook ready for bedtime.
M’Baku read to his son as his eyelids fell and he eventually drifted off to dreamland. The two adults snuck out of the room quietly and closed the door behind them, saying good night to the guards, before walking just a few doors down and entering the largest room Monae had ever seen. It sat on the corner of the palace, with a large balcony swooping around the side, looking out onto all of Wakanda. She could see even more of the beautiful country and maybe even past it to neighboring countries as well.
“This is...wow.”
“Sometimes I cannot believe it myself. Can I get you anything? Water, whiskey, tea?”
“Tea would be great actually,” she sat down on the couch as her eyes continued to wander around the space before they landed on his bookshelf.
“See anything you recognize?”
She got up to take a closer look and saw the books she gave him all those years ago, and a shy smile took over her face. She continued to browse his space, much like he did the first time she brought him to her place five years ago.
“Is this you? You look just like him!” Monae stopped on a picture of a young M’Baku with his parents. JJ held a striking resemblance to young M’Baku just like how older M’Baku looked just like his father in the picture. “The Jabari must have strong genes...I thought my family all looked alike, y’all are something else. Let me guess, you look like your granddaddy, too?”
“I do, actually,” he chuckled as he handed her a cup of jasmine tea. “Have a seat, make yourself comfortable.” M’Baku disappeared into what Monae assumed was a closet and reemerged in a brown hoodie and sweatpants.
She kicked off her shoes and tucked her legs under her as she sat on the couch, sipping her tea.
“So…” she started.
“So?”
“So, I guess we should talk about JJ.”
“JJ is fine for now, let us talk about something else. Like why you are so nervous around me.”
“I’m not nervous-” he cut her off with a look. “Ok, fine, I’m nervous, but I don’t know why.”
“Monae,” he turned her jaw towards him so they could look into each other’s eyes, “I know this is hard for you, I do. And I am not asking for you to completely uproot your life for me, but I want to be with you again...even if we have to make it work across the world.”
“M’Baku, I-” her head dropped.
“Do not have to make a decision right now.”
“It’s not that, it’s just…”
“Is there someone else?”
“Wh- no! I barely have time for myself, much less anyone else. I mean, I’ve gone on dates, had a few hookups-”
“Please, spare me the details.”
“Right, sorry,” she cleared her throat. “Don’t you have some royal suitors lined up or something?”
He chuckled, “I did, until I met you. They had been trying to find a chieftess for me for years.”
“Chieftess?”
“Yes, my wife would be my chieftess.”
“And if we get back together…?”
“I told you I could give you a kingdom, Monae.”
She hadn’t noticed he’d moved closer until she felt his breath on her cheek. She turned to meet his face and their lips connected, making fireworks shoot all over Monae’s body. She pulled back and looked at him before she straddled his body and dove back in for more. Their tongues danced against each other as the kiss turned passionate and his hands explored her body. He let out a moan as his hands gripped her ass that had gotten bigger over time. Her waist was thicker and her breasts hung a little lower, and he loved every inch of her. She grinded into his lap as she sucked on his bottom lip and he let out another moan that sounded closer to a growl before pulling back.
“If you want me to stop-”
“Don’t stop.”
A fire burned behind his eyes as she pulled her dress over her head, revealing her body to him. His fingers traced over the stretch marks on her stomach and she shivered at his touch as his eyes raked up and down her naked form. When she wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him again, he stood with her in his hands and walked her to the bed, lightly placing her down in the middle.
“I have missed you so much Babygirl,” he said between kisses as she squeezed her legs tighter around him. She could feel his  dick hardening between his legs as she opened her legs wider to let him in.
He kissed down her body until he reached her center, his lips ghosting over hers as he thanked Hanuman for bringing this woman back into his life before digging in like it was his last meal. Monae writhed on the bed as his tongue alternated between exploring her insides and licking her clit into submission. When his lips closed around her as he sloppily tongue kissed her entire pussy, she let out a deep moan that overwhelmed her emotionally and tears sprang from her eyes.
“Cum in my mouth.”
“Mm, yes.” her tears continued to pour out of her eyes as her body shook and tensed up before releasing a deluge onto his tongue. He didn’t stop either, he kept pushing her to her breaking point over and over again until he finally got tired and kissed his way back up her body.
“Are you ok?” he asked as he wiped her tears away.
“I’m ok,” she nodded.
“You are crying more than usual.”
“I just really missed you. It’s hard to explain how all this feels and the feelings are overwhelming as fuck...but I know I want this. I know I want you.”
He pecked her lips.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
“Monae, I am not just talking about sex-”
Her hands cupped his face and she pulled him into her so their foreheads rested against each other. “Neither am I.”
His thumb traced her bottom lip as he stared into her big brown eyes. Her hand made its way down his body and rested between his legs, rubbing along his thick, juicy dick that she missed oh so much. She grabbed the head and rubbed her thumb over his tip before running her fingernails up the leg of his sweatpants. She caught the bottom of his sweatshirt and pulled it up, prompting him to break their kiss and pull the hoodie over his head. His pants went next and she was met with the sight of his beautiful naked body.
He came back in for a kiss and she pulled his body over hers, opening herself to him again. He rested his forearm on the pillow next to her head and his other hand found its home under her knee, pulling her leg back even more as he leaned in to kiss her deeply.
“I love you,” he whispered in her ear as he slowly pushed inside her, working his way in one inch at a time then pulling out and pushing in deeper with each thrust. Her relatively short nails marked up his back as he filled her in a way she hadn’t been filled in years. She felt emotions swirl in her chest and escape from her eyes and he kissed her tears away one by one.
Once he was fully seated inside her he stilled to compose himself, allowing her to feel all of him inside her. Her pussy squeezed him tight and she grinded up into him.
“Move, baby.”
His hips pulled back before rolling forward, pushing deep into her wetness as she cried out to the heavens. Every thrust brought their already intertwined bodies closer together and he looked down at her with love in his eyes as he played her body like a drum. Monae couldn’t handle all the feelings and eventually they boiled over and she snapped, cumming all over him and rolling them over so that she was on top. Her hips worked him like it was her job, and her hands clawed at his shoulders. She corkscrewed her hips as she leaned her body back away from him, exposing her breasts for him to play with. And that he did, taking them into his mouth and teasing her pebbled buds before covering her entire neck and chest in kisses and light nibbles as she got up on her tiptoes and pounded her hips down onto his pelvis.
She felt the pressure rising in her lower abdomen and circled her hips, dragging her clit along his body and letting out a moan from deep within her soul as the pressure released.
“Let me see that arch in your back,” he said with a slap to her asscheek. Monae hopped up and kneeled down next to him before leaning forward and dropping her top half to the bed, leaving her voluptuous ass in the air for him to do as he pleased.
“Good girl.” He came up behind her and entered her in one swift motion, grabbing her hips and thrusting into her with rhythmic abandon.
“Yes! Yes!” was all she could say as she gripped the sheets in front of her and did her best to hold her ass up for him. He could tell she was struggling, so his hands came up under her hips and lifted them for her, making sure he got the correct angle to hit her spot. His grunts of passion mixed with her high pitched moans as he tore her apart to create a symphony in the large room, their voices echoing off the walls and out into the mountains.
His hands slipped and her body slid to the bed, prompting him to lean over her body and pull her neck back for a sloppy kiss, tongues meeting each other before their lips did. He used his other hand to grip her ass tight after slapping it.
“I feel you getting ready to cum again,” he whispered in her ear, “I am right there with you, Babygirl. Just tell me where you want it.”
“I-inside me. Please, Daddy.”
He flipped her over and plunged back inside, kissing her deeply as he dug into her. Monae’s nails found the same indents as before as he gave her all he had to give. Their foreheads connected as her walls contracted around him and his strokes faltered.
“M’Baku!” she cried out as she exploded all over him again, kicking his orgasm into gear as he stared deep into her eyes and emptied himself into her. The two of them fought to catch their breath as they untangled and laid next to each other. As they came down she was finally able to find the words she had buried for so long.
“M’Baku?”
“Hm?” He turned to look at her with his arm folded behind his head and she curled up at his side.
“I love you too.”
He chuckled and kissed her nose, “I know, Babygirl.”
--------
The next day, M’Baku showed his family around to the other tribes, but of course he saved the best for last. The Jabari people welcomed Monae and JJ with open arms and a week later, they held a celebration in honor of the little prince. He loved the attention, but mostly he just liked getting to play with his Panther tribe cousins and the other Jabari kids. Several elders came up to Monae to ask questions about marriage, all of which she managed to dance around like an expert, but the questions about JJ’s crowning were a little harder for her to dodge. She had hoped they would be able to put it off some, but it didn’t seem as though the elders were too keen on waiting. After the feast was over and the two parents put JJ to bed, Monae finally spoke up.
“So...the elders…”
“Yes, they seem to like you
“Oh I know they like me, each one of them asked me at least twice when I’m marrying you.”
“When are you marrying me?”
 “M’Baku I-”
“No I am serious, Monae,” he cooed as he walked towards her. “Stay with me.”
“I can’t.”
“Why not?”
“I just can’t.”
“That is not a good enough reason.”
“I have Jazz, and my job, and my friends.”
He grabbed her hands in his.
“Monae, Nakia did your job at the Oakland Center while living in Wakanda part time...travelling to see Jazz and your friends, or bringing them here even, would not be a problem. You are best friends with the king and queen, not to mention you yourself would be a chieftess...these problems are easily fixed, my love.”
Monae removed her hands from his and walked to the balcony, pulling the collar of her fur coat up to shield her from the elements. He followed after her and wrapped his arms around her waist, resting his head on hers.
“M’Baku, I’m not saying no...I’m saying I can’t just up and follow a man I was with for just two months to the other side of the world because he magically reappears in my life.”
“I am not just some man, Monae,” he turned her around to look at him, “I am Lord M’Baku the Great Gorilla, Chief of the Jabari. I am the father of your son. I am the man that you fell madly in love with in just two months. I do not want you to follow me, I want you to be with me...even on the other side of the world, if that is where your heart desires to be.”
“What would I even do here?” she asked, barely above a whisper.
“You could teach dance classes, or plan events, or whatever else might play to your skillset. You can even do nothing for the rest of your life if you want to-”
He was cut off by a nigga please glare from Monae.
“So basically, I can do whatever I want.”
“Yes.”
“And JJ? What will he do?”
“He will do everything Jabari children do. He will go to school, learn to fight, and when he is in his teens I will start preparing him to take over one day.”
“Teens?! Isn’t that too young still?”
“He will not be in charge then, think of it more as an apprenticeship.”
“Ok...this is a lot to take in, M’Baku. I’ll talk to JJ and see what he thinks.”
“But he is just a child.”
“And as his mom I want him to know that even though I have the final say, his voice gets to be heard.”
“You are a good mother.”
A tear came to her eye and she looked down, “Thank you.”
“If I absolutely had to accidentally abandon a child with anybody, I am glad it was you.”
They broke into laughter and he kissed her forehead.
“We will figure it out.”
The two of them fell asleep in each other’s arms, and when the next morning came Monae decided breakfast would be as good a time as any to gauge JJ’s reaction to their possible move.
M’Baku flipped the pancakes on the griddle as Monae sat at the table with JJ, both coloring away in his Blue’s Clues coloring book. They were so engrossed in their artwork that they barely even noticed him set the food down in front of them until he cleared his throat. They both looked at him and gave a sheepish grin, making M’Baku wonder how JJ could look so much like him yet so much like his mother at the same time.
Monae made JJ’s plate and cut up his pancakes for him before digging into her own. The pancakes melted in her mouth and the eggs were perfect fluffy clouds. She had forgotten how good he was in the kitchen. “Mmm this is delicious.”
“Baba, you can really cook. You’re as good as mommy!”
The adults chuckled as M’Baku sat down and dug in, enjoying the fruits of his labor. After a few minutes of just scraping utensils silling the silence, Monae cleared her throat.
“So...JJ. How do you like it here?”
“It’s really cold, but it’s fun. I like the snowball fights.”
“You are very good at them,” M’Baku added.
“You are. So do you like it more than home?”
“No they’re both good, especially with Auntie Jazz there now.”
Monae had hoped for a clear cut answer, but it didn’t seem like she’d be getting one.
“Well what do you like about both places?” she asked.
“Here there’s baba and umakhulu and Hasani and Hasina and my aunts and uncles and rhinos and snow. Auntie Jazz is at home though, and so are my friends and Juju and the Center.”
Monae contemplated his words, still not coming to a concrete solution.
“JJ, how about you help me clean up the kitchen?” M’Baku asked after noticing the perplexed look stuck on Monae’s face.
“Ok!” JJ hopped down from his chair as M’Baku collected the plates from the table and brought them to the sink. Monae watched how the two of them interacted while they washed and dried the dishes. JJ and M’Baku had grown close in the time they had spent in Jabari land. She loved watching them laugh and goof off together, and every time she watched him read JJ a story at night, her heart felt full. When they finished washing dishes M’Baku sat back down at the table with Monae and grabbed her hand, bringing it to his lips for a kiss.
“Did that help with your decision making?”
“Not at all, he’s so diplomatic.” she groaned and put her head against the table.
M’Baku stifled a smile as he rubbed her back.
“Mommy, what’s wrong?”
“Just a little headache, baby.”
“JJ, what do you say I take you to a gorilla nest?”
Monae’s head popped up immediately, “Is that safe?!”
“Yes, the ones we will visit are used to being around humans.”
“I don’t know, M’Baku-”
“Come with us, it will ease your mind.”
Monae took a deep breath then nodded before the kimoyo beads she had been gifted upon arrival started to make noise. “It’s Jazz, I’m gonna take this in my room.”
He nodded, knowing she needed to talk things out with her sister before she could make a decision.
When Monae made it to her room, she answered the call and Jazz’s voice filled the room.
“Heyyyyyy!”
“Why are you awake? It’s like midnight.”
“You know I’m a night owl. So what’s up? Your text sounded like you were freaking out.”
“I am freaking out.”
“Why? The sex not as good as you remember or something?”
“No it’s definitely not that...he wants us to stay.”
“Ok...and the problem is?”
“My life is in Nashville, you’re there, my job is there, my friends are there. JJ’s friends are there.”
“He’ll make new friends. And didn’t you tell me you worked with the queen? In Oakland...on the other side of the world from her kingdom...that she ruled...while working in Oakland?”
“Ugh yes, you sound like M’Baku.”
“You got a smart babydaddy. One that I’m sure wouldn’t mind me coming to visit. It’ll be just like when I was at NYU.”
“I know, but you just moved in and now I’m abandoning you-”
“Sis, you’re not abandoning me. I. Will. Be. Fine.”
Monae took a deep breath.
“So what’s with all the excuses?”
“Huh?”
“You heard me. Why all the excuses, Nae?”
“I just want to do what’s right for JJ, but I don’t know what that is. He likes both places equally. I don’t want to uproot him, but I also don’t want to keep him from M’Baku and his side of the family.”
“All I’m hearing is that you’re too scared to make the decision you want to make. Why?”
“Why what?”
“Why are you hiding behind JJ as an excuse knowing damn well he’s going to be more than fine wherever y’all go?”
“I...damn. You’re right.” Monae had exhausted all her excuses and felt defeated. She really was the only thing standing in their way.
“Duh, so what are you gonna do about it?”
--------
The night before their departure, M’Baku and Monae did their usual routine of getting JJ ready for bed then retiring to his quarters for tea or something stronger.
This time was a little different though, despite the red wine poured into two glasses. Monae was usually much more talkative, but this time she seemed to be in another world.
“Is everything ok, my love?”
“Hm? Oh yeah, just thinking.”
“About what?”
“About a lot of things, really. About JJ, work, my future...us.”
“What about us?”
“I know that being with you, I'd have certain responsibilities,” she paused as M’Baku nodded. “Like what?”
“Well I am not entirely sure. We are restructuring the way we run things here. I was gone for five years and the council had no problems stepping in and ruling in my absence. The flexibility will allow me to come to America more often to visit...I don’t think I can handle just seeing him for a couple months a year, but I can come to you.”
“Isn’t that against tradition?”
“Yes, but so is having a child out of wedlock and I do not see anyone complaining about that. In fact, the people love JJ...and you,” he grabbed her hand in his and intertwined their fingers.
“I’ve noticed,” Monae deadpanned, thinking back to all the questions about marriage the council threw her way. M’Baku chuckled as he read the frustration on her face.
“Tradition got thrown out the window as soon as the aliens arrived.”
“I bet,” Monae laughed before her face turned serious. “What was it like fighting aliens?”
“Terrifying. Nothing could have prepared me for what I saw that day in battle,” he kissed her hand, “but the whole time I was praying to Hanuman that I could see your face again. When T’Challa told me how much time had passed, I was heartbroken. I just knew you had found somebody else...when you told me I had a son, my whole world changed. Now I have to raise my little boy in a world with terrifying aliens that I don’t understand and cannot explain to him.”
“I still can’t explain The Snap to him, maybe when he’s older I’ll have the words, but as for now I don't even understand it enough to answer him. He asked me the other day if you would get Dusted again...he’s worried about losing you and I can’t give him an answer because I’m worried about the same thing.”
“Is that what all this is about? Your hesitance?”
Monae burst into tears and he wrapped his arm around her, pulling her in closer.
“It-it’s just that it could happen again at any moment. What if you’re gone for another five years? What if you never come back if there’s a next time?”
“Monae, it is over. The Titan is dead, the stones are gone, the gauntlet is gone...there will be no more Snaps. I cannot promise that something else equally preposterous will not happen instead, but that worry is gone now.”
She crawled into his lap and curled up into a ball as he stroked her back.
“So...no more aliens?”
“I cannot promise that...just no more Snaps.”
She nodded and rested her head in the crook of his neck, breathing him in and relaxing more with each inhale of his scent.
She let out a sigh.
“Is something wrong, my love?”
“I just remembered we leave tomorrow.”
“Yes, I have been trying not to think about it.”
“I’ll miss you.”
“You don’t have to.”
“I know...but I won’t miss you long.”
M’Baku deflated.
“What do you mean?”
“I mean,” she sat up and looked him in his sad eyes, “that it’s not fair for JJ to bounce between us. He needs a home that’s not split in half, and there’s more for him here than back in Nashville.”
“You are saying-”
“That we’re gonna go home tomorrow, pack our things, then come back in a week.”
A slow smile spread across M’Baku’s face as a tear came to his eye. Monae wiped it away as he kissed her all over her face before pulling back and staring into her eyes.
“I know you are coming back for JJ’s sake, but what does this mean for us?”
“It means that although JJ comes first, and is the main reason for this move...I can’t say that being closer to you had nothing to do with it. I’ve been alone for five years, I don’t want to be without you again.”
“I am sorry that I left you, Monae.”
“You had no choice, don’t be sorry.”
“I just hate that I missed out on so much. Pictures aren’t enough.”
“You’re here now. Yes you missed his birth and his first steps, but you’ll teach him how to shave and how to be a Jabari warrior. There will still be plenty of wounds to kiss and make better, baby. Plenty more ‘firsts’.”
“Mm. Would you ever consider having another child?”
“My answer used to be ‘hell no’, but that was before you came back. I could consider it...I think JJ would make a great big brother...maybe in another year or two?”
M’Baku’s smile was wider than ever and his eyes twinkled in the light as he looked at her, studying her features. Her big doe eyes always gave her emotions away, even behind her thick tortoiseshell frames. She had laid her heart out on the table for him and he almost couldn’t believe how quickly she seemed to change her mind. He wasn’t sure exactly how their conversation went, but he knew he had Jazz to thank for this.
“That sounds perfect.”
The two of them stayed up all night discussing their future, emptying the bottle of wine around midnight, and falling asleep on the couch shortly after. The next morning, Monae was awakened by the sound of JJ knocking on the door. She opened her eyes to see they had somehow made it to the bed and smiled picturing him carrying her while she slept peacefully in his arms. M’Baku stirred next to her and stretched as she got up to answer the door.
“What’s up baby?” she asked him, still groggy and voice cracking as she adjusted M’Baku’s t-shirt she was sleeping in...that she also did not have on when she fell asleep.
“I’m hungry, it’s late.”
Monae looked at the time and her eyes nearly bugged out of her head, “How is it already 10:30?!”
M’Baku made breakfast again while Monae rushed to get herself and their son ready for their trip. When JJ started folding his clothes to pack in his suitcase, Monae stopped him, having forgotten that he didn’t know the plan yet. She noticed he was moving slow and looked a little sad.
“What’s wrong, baby?”
“I’m gonna miss it here.”
“You like being with your baba?”
He sniffled and a tear rolled down his cheek. It was at that moment that she knew she had made the right decision.
“JJ...honey...mommy and baba have something to tell you,” she looked to M’Baku right as he walked in the door, filling the entire frame with his body. He sat on the bed on the other side of JJ and pulled him into his lap while Monae grabbed his little hands in hers.
“What is it?” he sniffled again as M’Baku wiped his tears.
“We’re going home today, but we’re coming back...we’re gonna move here to be with baba.”
JJ’s face lit up and he stopped crying. “Really?!”
“Yes, really,” M’Baku chuckled as he tickled his son, making his infectious laughter ring out once again.
“But what about Auntie Jazz?”
“It’ll be just like before, we can go visit her or she can come visit here.”
“But I thought you didn’t like the cold?”
Monae sighed as M’Baku stifled a laugh. “I don’t, but a Jabari man stole my heart and we made a little Jabari that belongs in the mountains with his people. I’ll adjust.”
“So...we’re really moving?” The hopeful look on his face made both his parents smile.
“Yes,” she laughed, “we’re really moving.”
“I have to tell Hasina and Hasani!” he jetted off to find his beads. They were programmed without most of the normal features so that he and his cousins could talk anytime they wanted to, and sure enough he immediately spilled the beans to the twins despite the fact that they would be seeing each other in an hour’s time. As they chatted, Monae and M’Baku grabbed the few things they would actually need for the week they would be gone and in no time flat, they were ready to go.
“Is that everything?” M’Baku asked as the family of three travelled to the small jet that would take them down to the palace. It was a gloomy, overcast day and the two parents tried to not let it affect their moods as JJ said goodbye to his grandma. Neither wanted to say goodbye, even though they both knew it was temporary. Any time apart felt like a lifetime.
“I think so, but we’ll be back so it’s fine.”
“I love hearing you say that,” he leaned in and kissed her.
They arrived at the palace and they were greeted by the royal family again, minus N’Jadaka who had gone back to Oakland a few days ago.
The cousins immediately gravitated towards each other and started chatting away as the adults did the same.
“We heard from a couple little birdies that you’re moving here. What changed?” Nakia asked.
“I had to be sure...but I’m sure now.”
“Well dear, it seems you have made the right choice,” Ramonda motioned behind them and the two of them turned around to see the three kids play fighting. “I know M’Baku must be happier than a hippo in the Nile.”
“He is,” she beamed, “and honestly I am too. I was scared, but it’s like as soon as I said ‘I’ll stay’ my worries just disappeared. I knew it was the right thing to do.”
M’Baku, Shuri, and T’Challa joined them and the two men put their arms around their loves.
“Are you ready?” M’Baku whispered to her.
“Yes,” she giggled at his breath tickling her ear.
“Enough of that, she’ll be back in a week,” Shuri playfully ribbed them and everyone laughed.
“But that is so long-“
“Five years, M’Baku.”
He conceded with a kiss and the group meandered towards the jet where Okoye and Ayo already awaited them.
Monae and JJ turned and said their goodbyes, leaving M’Baku for last.
He knelt down to JJ’s level and pulled something from his pocket before placing it around JJ’s neck. It was a wood bead necklace with a small hand-carved  gorilla pendant.
“It’s just like yours!”
“That is right, igorila encinci.”
JJ threw his arms around M’Baku’s neck and M’Baku hugged him tight.
“I love you, baba.”
“I love you too, Jabari.” he held him close and a tear almost came to his eye at hearing those words for the very first time.
“Do you love mommy?”
Both parents smiled as M’Baku stood to his full height, carrying a giggling JJ with him.
“I love you and your mommy more than anything else in this world,” he said, looking into her eyes. He leaned in for a chaste kiss and she obliged, making JJ giggle at their display before Monae reached out and started tickling him, really giving him something to laugh about.
“We’ll see you in a week?”
“I will be here,” he kissed both of their foreheads before they walked up the stairs and onto the ship.
T’Challa and Shuri came up on either side of M’Baku as he waved at them before the Talon shimmered out of view as it went through the dome. He let out a sigh and everyone could see the dopey smile lingering on his face.
“Someone’s happy,” Shuri nudged him in his side and it broke him from his daze.
“Very.” He turned to the king, “Thank you.”
“For the ship? It is no problem, really-”
“No, for sending me to Oakland. I hated the idea of going, but I never would have met Monae otherwise...so thank you for not letting me talk you out of it.”
“You were never going to talk me out of it...but you’re welcome.”
T’Challa clapped M’Baku on the shoulder as he turned to go inside with the rest of the family.
“You coming?” Shuri asked M’Baku.
“In just a moment.”
She nodded and followed behind her brother, leaving M’Baku alone, staring up at the sky.
“Hanuman, Ancestors,” he started, “thank you for blessing me with the air in my lungs and the blood in my veins. Thank you for allowing me to be in my child’s life. Thank you for leading me to Monae, and thank you for her choosing me over Damon. I have no words to express the depths of my gratitude, thank you just does not seem like enough...but that is all I have right now, so thank you, thank you, thank you. Please, keep them safe on this journey and bring them back to me.”
Just then, the clouds moved out of the way and the sun poked through for the first time all day.
“Glory to Hanuman,” M’Baku praised before he turned and walked back into the palace with a huge, goofy smile on his face, content in knowing his family would return to him soon.
The end.
