Las aguas residuales no son un residuo.

De acuerdo con la ONU, se estima que aumentará el consumo de agua al 30% a nivel global. Esta cifra ampliará la brecha de suministro de agua para países que ya enfrentan estrés hídrico. También, el Banco Mundial afirma que el 80% de las aguas residuales son vertidas sin un tratamiento adecuado. “Las aguas residuales son vistas como una carga de la que hay que deshacerse, pero las aguas residuales son un valioso recurso”. Asimismo, la Asociación Internacional del Agua, estima que menos de la mitad de las aguas residuales en el mundo son recolectadas, y menos de una quinta parte son tratadas.

En países con escasez de agua y poca precipitación pluvial como México, se vuelve determinante el saneamiento y reutilización de las “aguas servidas”. En vez que importar agua de otras regiones, el tratamiento de agua local se vuelve determinante. También, se estima que entre el 25 y el 50% del agua en el mundo, se pierde por fugas, conexiones ilegales, y deterioro de infraestructura. Por esta razón, se requiere de una gestión eficiente del agua, y reparación y mantenimiento constante de la infraestructura.

La nueva postura ante las aguas residuales, es clasificarla como un valioso recurso para lograr una economía circular, en vez de un residuo. Las aguas residuales pueden tratarse con altos estándares para ser reutilizadas en sanitarios, riego de cultivos, fines industriales, y en la recarga de acuíferos.

Además, el contenido orgánico en las aguas residuales puede transformarse en biogás, fertilizante y hasta en la recuperación de suelos degradados. Estos recursos pueden generar ingresos adicionales para la industria que traten sus aguas y las empresas operadoras de agua y saneamiento.

Jennifer Sara, del Banco Mundial, mencionó que: “en esta época en la que el 36 % de la población mundial vive en regiones donde el agua es un bien escaso, el tratamiento de las aguas residuales para su reutilización debe ser parte de la solución a los problemas de escasez y contaminación de las aguas”.
