L. Fury's 100 Favorite Things to Draw
This is an exercise I did for the agency that represents me, The Cat Agency.  They assign this to all of their new artists. It's part of a larger mission to get their artists the type of work they want to do, because what often happens in an artist's career is that they take whatever work they can get early on, and that work dictates the type of projects they can win in the future. This was a brilliant way to get me to draw all of the things I have always wanted to draw, but had no excuse to. It was a lot of fun and quite the challenge!
Tumblr media
I love drawing people, so I wanted the concept to include a lot of character designs. I could have gone more abstract with the design, but wanted to ground them all in some sort of environment together. A costume party scene allowed for a great variety of characters and fashion, and many opportunities to tell stories through the characters' interactions.
The children's book 'The Neighbors' was a huge reason for this. I love Einat Tsarfati's busy backgrounds and use of color.
Tumblr media
I also referenced the party scene from Breakfast at Tiffany's, and the drag queen was heavily influenced by Naomi Smalls from RuPauls Drag Race S8.

At San Diego Comic-con “Run” won the Eisner award for Best Graphic Memoir! I was able to attend the award ceremony and participate in a panel with John Lewis’s son, John Miles Lewis, thanks to Abrams Books (@abramsbooks, publisher). It was a surreal experience, and I’m so grateful to them for making it (and this book) possible.
Now that I’m home, I wanted to take the time to recognize some of the people behind Run.
Although I thanked my editor, Lauren Sankovich, at the ceremony, it bears repeating how much I appreciate her kind and firm guidance during the creation process. Run is my first published work, and the process began in 2020. Her support was invaluable during the unpredictable difficulties that year brought, and I’m so grateful to have had her by my side.
Nate Powell (Illustrator of “March”) was so generous with his time, wisdom and kickass lettering skills. Chris Ross (Designer of “Run”) took my amateur (and often smudged) pages and turned them into a beautiful, Eisner-worthy book.
Long before I was involved, the research team at Good Trouble combed through decades-old photos, police reports, and news archives for references and sources to ensure we told this story as accurately as possible. Andrew Aydin (@andrewaydin) was a great advocate for John Lewis’s vision and voice even after his passing.
Of course, none of this would have been possible without Congressman Lewis. I’m endlessly honored and humbled that he saw my art and felt he could trust me with his story.
On a personal note, I would like to thank Ashley Hymel for her support and guidance. Love and thanks to my parents as well, who nurtured my curiosity and supported my interest in art and comics.
And a special thanks to Jesse, who nursed me back to health post-knee-surgery, pep-talked me through the whole project, and so much more. 💛

My dog's squinty, guilty face. <3 It reminded me of a kitsune mask, so I drew it. I've created more masks as a fun, low-stakes drawing exercise lately.
Would y'all be interested in commissions like this?

Please check it out if you enjoyed my art in "Run" C:

It’s finally time to focus on my new comic, “Condemned”! This project started as a pitch I created years ago, which unexpectedly led me to illustrating John Lewis’s “Run” comic. I learned a lot from Run, and was able to apply those lessons to Condemned (like giving your panels room to breath x_x). You can really see the difference it’s made in this side by side comparison!
You can read Condemned on Tapas but I’ll eventually have it formatted for webpage and print as well. Keep an eye out for new updates :D

Hello! May is Mental Health Awareness month, so I hope you’re all being kind and patient with yourselves!
If you just now found out, it’s nearly the end of May! We’ve gotta make up for lost time! If we spend a really intense 10 minutes being collectively aware of our mental health right now, that should make up for our lack of awareness the rest of the month. I think that’s how it works.
If it doesn’t work, retail therapy might. And if I may recommend a poignant Brain Goo pin or sticker?
This image visualizes how depression feels for me. A malignant goo that soaks into my brain like a sponge and weighs me down. It would be so satisfying to wring it out and get back to business as usual. I’m sure some of y’all can relate. 💛
