Saigon is in a total lockdown, but we’ve got a bread hook-up and today they opened the street markets again. So, my partner was able to get coconut water to make a lovely curry. Just popping my head up in the T.O.F.U. world to say that I’m still vegan, and Vietnam still continues to spoil me with options. Forgot to post this great meal we had at @filthyvegansaigon while checking-out how quiet the city was during Tet. That ganache was amazing, and it made me realize just how long it had been since I had a truly rich chocolate desert. (at Filthy Vegan) https://www.instagram.com/p/CLYh5idpIZh/?igshid=86jhgvfygy08

In summary: T.O.F.U. is Fucking Dead. Sort of.
A lot of things have led up to these decisions, and for some of you they might not even be a surprise. However, I figured I should probably put it out there instead of just letting things go quiet.
Long story short, I'm going to stop doing my Where Am I Wednesday videos, as well as the monthly newsletter for the magazine. More importantly, I also haven't really been working on the magazine for months now, and I don't see that changing at any point soon.
So, I'm declaring a hiatus on all of these things. It's not necessarily the end, but I certainly don't know when/if any of it will ever start up again. For now, I want to thank you for watching these videos and reading the magazine. I wouldn't have come this far with any of it if it wasn't for folks being interested, and I hope you got something out it while it lasted. I know I did.
Past issues still available here.

The current push by Donald Trump and the Republican Party to shape the USA 2020 election as fraudulent is an obvious twisting of reality, but isn't that something many of us do each day?
By no means am I saying a pic on social media is the same as sowing doubt in the fabric of the democracy that the United States has sold (and often forced) around the world, but helping my partner with a video for her channel did cause me to question efforts to shape reality in regard to both extremes.

In what seems like the longest day in the lives of so many, the American election is (sort of) coming to a close, and many folks are left (once again) wondering how it could be so close.
Granted, the truly final results may not be know for some time due to mail-in ballots and other things, as well as the possibility of a lengthy legal battle, but the current standings of both Donald Trump and Joe Biden have surprised plenty of folks.
Personally, I'd love to say that I'm shocked Biden isn't riding a landslide victory right now, but I'm not. The United States of America has problems, and Trump is just the representation of so many of them. Whether he actually wins or loses another term, the fact that millions and millions of people thought him appropriate for leader of the country is problematic in many ways.
For more of my thoughts on this, please watch this week's WAIW episode.

After receiving plenty of support and helpful suggestions from folks about my possible vitamin B12 deficiency, I thought I would take this week's episode to update everyone a little on where things stand for me.

This week, my partner and I found ourselves in Northern Vietnam in a city called Hải Phòng. Instead of heading back to Hà Nội after her training ended, we decided to head to Cát Bà Island for something a little different.
Although we may not explore Hạ Long Bay in the typical tourist way, I'm hoping we'll visit the national park and perhaps see a few other sites on the island before we head back to Hà Nội. First though, we had to get to the island, and that's where this episode comes in.
For more on the island, check-out its Wikipedia entry.

After taking this photo, the lovely woman working at this tiny little veg restaurant proceeded to bring me several other things, and I eventually had to mime to her that I was full and didn’t need anymore. We’re here in Hai Phong, Vietnam at least until tomorrow, so I expect I will be going back to this place again for breakfast. #vegan #vegansofig #vegantravel #veganism #veganfood #chay #vietvegan #veganvietnam #vietnam #haiphong (at Quan Chay Thien Tam Phan Chi Trinh) https://www.instagram.com/p/CGjZajhpACV/?igshid=wbdpwy3t037j

TW: discussions involving blood and needles.
Following-up on my previous video about possibly being vitamin B12 deficient, I thought I would talk a little bit about my newfound financial privilege and what it has meant to me being able to address my current health issues. More importantly, I also wanted to touch on the fact that wealth shouldn't really be the deciding factor as to whether or not one is able to live a healthy life.
As a Canadian, it's something I kind of took for granted for most of my life, but I've become much more aware of it while travelling. Even though I've been able to pay relatively little for health-related expenses here in SE Asia over the last few years, a number of these decisions involved a rising concern in how I would cover other bills soon after. Personally, I don't think that's the way the world should be, and I hope at some point universal healthcare becomes the standard.
On a different note, in regard to the tests I requested, they basically cover both my vitamin B12 and my iron levels. However, since B12 levels can be hard to determine, especially for vegans, with the usual blood test, I requested to have both my homocysteine and hemoglobin checked. I was hoping to get an MMA test, but the clinic I visited didn't offer it, so these things were the best options. Both of them should help to give me a more reliable indicator of whether or not I'm deficient since a deficiency would lead to noticeable changes.
If you'd like to learn more about the importance of vitamin B12 and the need to be properly tested for it, I recommend the Vegan Society's page here.

Since I gave a tiny update on the garden in last week's episode, and it was raining again when I shot this, I thought a bigger garden tour was in order. More importantly, my partner wanted to make a vegetarian (chay) dish with the bitter melons we've been growing to see whether or not I might like it more than the other ways I had it prepared before.
Check-out the episode to see how much has grown in our garden and whether or not her attempts to woo me with the local Vietnamese dish were successful.

Although there's plenty of evidence to suggest that a vegan diet can be healthy at any age for many people, the need for a B12 supplement is something that not enough of us within the vegan community talk about when it comes to nutrition.
Personally, as a long-term vegan (10+ years), I've had a number of ups and downs when it comes to my health. Lately, I suspect my biggest issue relates to a B12 deficiency, and there's a number of reasons why. As I explain in the video, I could have easily addressed the issue much sooner, but I didn't.
If you're vegan, please research a great B12 supplement that is available in your area or consider a variety of fortified foods when possible, and don't risk your health in the long-term.
For more information on veganism and B12, the Vegan Society has a great article here.
To learn more about vegan nutrition, please check-out T.O.F.U.'s review of "Becoming Vegan".
