Steve groaned loudly as he felt Tony bounce across the bed toward him. He couldn't move. He could only let Tony come toward him. "Leave me to die."

"You're the one who wouldn't listen when I said not to jump without a parachute again," Tony said, and then his calloused hands were gently settling on his back, carefully pressing where they both knew he got the worst knots. "Was this just to get out of going out to that new restaurant I wanted to try?"

Steve let out another loud groan. He couldn't tell if the massage felt good or not. He was pretty sure he was finished healing, but sometimes those deep bone bruises persisted. And he knew that Tony was just teasing him, but he wasn't trying to get out of going to that new sushi restaurant, even though he hated sushi. But he felt too crummy to even put up a token protest about it.

"Okay," Tony said, and his touch went lighter. When Steve made no indication it was any better, he pulled his hands away entirely. Steve missed his touch immediately, but he also couldn't bear to try again. "I vote today to be a pajama day," Tony declared, sliding over the mattress toward the edge of the bed.

"I don't wear pajamas," Steve grunted. He supposed technically his nightwear could be pajamas (boxers, usually, but sometimes a t-shirt if he was feeling a little too exposed). But he didn't want to get up and change out of the sweatpants and sweatshirt SHIELD medical had provided him with.

"I was talking about me," Tony scoffed.

"Oh," Steve said, and finally had the strength to turn his head and watch him, because Tony's pajamas were a wildcard. Sometimes he wore boxers and a t-shirt, and sometimes he wore nothing at all.

Tony was going for the closet instead of the dresser. Steve, miraculously, found himself sitting up, mindless of any pain or discomfort. Tony only kept one type of pajamas in the closet, and he hesitated to even use the term for them. It seemed wrong to call lacy things something as boring as 'pajamas.'

Maybe he could see if that sushi restaurant delivered.

❤️ What is your favorite line that you’ve written in a fic?

TOUGH question mostly because I can't fucking remember anything.

I have lines that still make me laugh:

And two fics that I think hold up pretty well prose-wise: "As They Are" and "Must Admit I'm Out of Bright" but I'd be hard-pressed to find a good serious line.

Oh, wait!! I really like the poem young-pining-Steve wrote young-Tony in "The Remarkable People Initiative & The Zugzwang Dilemma", also a riff off of the poem Ben wrote Beverly in IT. That fic is chock full of references to other children-encountering-huge-scary-things novels.

👻 What is your wildest headcanon?

My wildest headcanons aren't that wild. Mostly stuff about the Avengers as people. Like.

Clint's got the best music taste in the OG Avengers (Sam wins overall). It's not that he's particularly musically inclined; it's just that he's listened to a lot more music, he keeps up with new artists, goes for variety, and is able to curate his listening experience better. He makes an active effort so by default he gets the aux.

Natasha likes hard 90s (only 90s!) dubstep and has Opinions about classical music but mostly just listens to whatever Clint's put on during a stakeout. It's not that she doesn't care; she's just not very picky.

Bruce has got very carefully curated playlists that are all some variation of "CALM DOWN INSTANTLY", "SENSORY IS FUCKED. LISTEN AND CALM DOWN", "STAY CALM AND LISTEN TO THIS"; mood stabilisers, you know? And then one playlist that's just "AGHGHHGHGHGHHGHGHGHGHGHGHHHHHSHHSHSHSHS". It's a playlist curated by the Hulk and it's mostly Britney Spears, Linkin Park and Cocomelon.

Thor likes orchestras and raves. Acapella fascinates him. He's weirdly ambivalent about pop music but thinks that Earth's nursery rhymes are pure shite.

Steve doesn't really listen to music much. If people tell him he has to check something out, he'll do it, but he doesn't really keep playlists or anything on record. He's not the type to crank out a tune just for the heck of it. If he has to listen to something, he tends to go for "actual singers." Okay, he likes Whitney Houston. + he will listen to Thor's acapella picks because he thinks the genre's real impressive. He enjoys swing and jazz but only when live, and slow jazz he keeps for romancin. . . and speaking of people he's romancing->

Tony thinks he's got good music taste--he's an 80s baby! But he doesn't really. He's been listening to the same shit for thirty years and he's yet to get bored of it. He does have a party trick though where he can offhandedly recite the lyrics off songs from decades back if you ask him casually enough. But! If he's actively trying to recall it (aka karaoke), he fucks up.

Steve’s relationship with time and timelines is by far the most interesting one to me, within the MCU. He has seen firsthand how the same timeline can feel like an alternate universe, given enough of a time gap. He knows exactly what it’s like to walk into a world which parallels the known one but is different in nearly every way.

His personhood is divided among so many different times and within so many different people that I wonder how it feels, to him, to see others freaking out about time travel.

His head is stuck in the limbo between multiple decades and he is, in essence, the first successful time traveler in the Avengers. Tony may have invented time travel, but Steve experienced it first.

hi, princess 🌸 i thought long and hard and decided on this one. i will give no context besides the fact it's inspired by my experiences. hopefully, it will see the light of day in its full form, soon. 🥹

He steps out of the suit, leaving only the earpiece on, and gets even closer to his team-leader.

“Hey, Cap, it's okay; you're safe.” He knows those words don't amount to much when you're in the midst of panic, because all logic and rationale go out the window — yet, he needs to say them out loud, maybe more so for his sake.

Tony might not be the most well-equipped person to deal with this, but he's been on the other side often enough to know a bit about what snaps him out of it. It's annoying, really, because there's no clear answer, no consistent plan, no dependable solution — not even for the same person. Simply assuming how someone else experiences a panic attack is a fool's game. But he has to try.

He thinks of his own episodes. Sometimes, a hug from Rhodey was the right first step in de-escalating the scene. In those instances, it would make him feel safe and protected by a trusted person, and grounded in his surroundings — which were often a vastly different reality than what his brain was making them to be. Other times, his touch would feel suffocating, as if he was trapped, and he would either have to suffer in silence as he spiraled further, or full-on kick his best friend to make him break contact.

Taking a gamble on what Steve might need, he approaches him with a raised hand. It dwells on him that he must look like a person trying to interact with a wild animal, and that it feels like it, too; but he dismisses the thought right away.

He's not scared of Steve, not really. Maybe he should be, because who knows what a traumatized supersoldier is capable of when their mind is clouded by anxiety? Alas, the only worry Tony has is making sure he doesn't make Steve any more uncomfortable than he clearly already is.

“I'm gonna touch you now, okay?”

He gets no response, but Steve's eyelids flutter shut and he lets out a whimper. Tony lays a reassuring hand on his shoulder, but Steve shudders as if it's unbearably heavy. Probably the way his Captain responsibility often feels, Tony's brain adds. He squeezes, just once, then tries to triangulate Steve's breathing pattern, and concludes that Steve is riding the ending of the episode.

“Steve? Can you tell who I am?”

“T-Tony…” he manages through gasps of air. That is a good sign — it means he isn't too far gone.

“Okay, Steve, dear, you need to breathe—”

“It's okay, I can push through this, I am a soldier for God’s sake. I'm a leader, my team needs me—” he chokes on an inhale.

“Sitrep?” Tony says into the comms, not taking his hand away or his eyes off Steve.

“Arms dealer, we're already in position. You guys close?”

Tony nods to himself, mind already made up.

so i just finished reading chapter 4 of 'only natural to harden up' and i am a gooey puddle of emotions. i want to write you a love letter. i want to gently kiss the fingers that type out the most heart wrenching yet soul-warming stories i have read.

i will collect myself to write a coherent comment eventually but for now have this slightly pathetic ask as a token of my affection 🫴🏻❣️

whiny.....K..............Love..........you're such a sweetheart. Not going to front, that final chapter took a toll on me, less because of its nature and more so because of (a) how much it mattered to me that I get it right because it was for someone whose writing I really admire and (b) because Work swallowed me whole and only burped me out after I did unspeakable things to its uvula.

I got really lucky with this W.I.P. because I had people cheering me on, and you were one of those superstars. Thank you a billion gajillion zamillion for being so generous with your time and praise and cheerleading. It was such a gift to behold, every time. I'm so happy you enjoyed the last chapter. You're an honest delight and I hold this ask, and all your comments, very dear to me.
