I have brain rot so here's another Hexolot who's a hybrid between @my-quirk-is-fred's species and a random alien species I designed for something else, incredibly not Canon but both aliens have: multiple eyes, tentacle/tendril hair, glowy patterny bits and brain went lmao wouldn't it be funny if they just went yea I'd tap. And so they did. Info and long haired version under cut.

I wanna start by saying the Hexolot was likely the 'mother' species receiving the dna to create child as the species I made unnamed would've preferred to keep their child safe on their ship but this oc is on other ships so the Hexolot likely left after a nice space meeting and had child later.

Hexolot dna seems pretty dominant so obviously it more heavily shows in the child.

Short king, has vibes of a dude and answers general to anything but resonates with he more so and people tend to assume they're a he too, significantly shorter than the average hexalot as the 'father' species is small themselves probably idk 5ft if stood from head to toes and idk how tall Hexolot are but I assume they're taller than people so this oc is short. (especially compared to half prehex who definitely stands over him like >:3)

Ship engineer can fix literally anything and everything on a ship, catch him working on things to keep ship going. He only took engineering as he was good at it told by teachers to pursue what he was good at and succeed, rather than learn about what he liked and fail.

He actually really likes plants he's just, really really bad at keeping them alive, in his original mental concept he had an experiment intelligent sentient plant he made (probably illegally(yes its still illegal in space)) called Delpheen but I don't know if I'm keeping that.

Because of his 'father' species he was born with a lot of incredibly short hair tendrils that have grown out a little but remain short as due to weird hybridization his genes probably just tell him to keep youngling hair permanently likely latching onto the Hexolot short hair gene making it more dominant.

He's actually capable of moving each individual one and can make them grow which he uses for climbing around in vents (sus) when working, this is also from the 'father' genes as they climb around similarly.

All his eyes are fully functional, his top eyes are better at night vision though and help process extra information making him very good during power outs or dark places, though the eye shine can spook people.

Finally from his 'father' species comes the metal structures on his face and growing from his tusks/pincers. The species naturally produces cobalt on their face as facial markings and in defensive situations and so he has his own markings and changing the shape of his tusk/pincers likely binding to some recessive dna that would've made those shapes normally.

His extended tendrils do grow a fine metallic cobalt sheath making them slightly defensive and he has warning makings just for show to scare people off if needed.

Oh also surprisingly good with kids? The 'father' species has a very strong active protect child instinct and kids seem to sense he's a soft touch despite being a bit socially inept with adults.

Does not understand the "go bother someone else" parents, who then get annoyed that he's the person watching their kids keeping them safe and outta trouble cause you shooed off your young one? You did not supervise? You can't get mad at me watching over them?? I literally work here??

And doesn't get when people get annoyed if he asks if they even wanted kids considering they always shoo them off. Cause let's be real they'll always be the go away type parents who don't want to interact with their kids but like obviously still love them, it's just hard for him to comprehend as in his 'father' species babies and young are almost always constantly carried around by an adult of the family so it's strange to him, shooing a child away feels wrong.

The kind of crew member to wake up to a power shortage, roll over cause its not his shift they can fix it, then proceed to throw himself outta bed when he remembers a single mom on deck 6-C with a baby that needs bottle feeding every hour and last time these idiots took 3 hours to fix a 30 minute problem so he's GOING cause someone's gotta make sure this baby gets fed! Outta the way you incompetents.

Hand him a baby and he will hold the baby support the neck and body and any extra alien parts that need extra support while the parent works, doesn't make a scene or fuss.

thoughts on the cut episodes and ppls reactions 'n stuff

Since it was confirmed that a few more episodes of Hilda were written but cut, I do think the reaction of people finding this out is really interesting and not just because its fairly common in the industry and isint a sign of anything bad necessarily. I mean heck, in a weird way being behind the scenes and then seeing how people interpret things, what they take as important, what they think is a thread…all of that is interesting. When your job is basically trying to get people to pick up what you're putting down storywise its kind of a neat topic, because everyone communicates in their own way.

BTW before I keep going this is not a post to say dont crit/vent/complain/whatever about whatever the heck you want in hilda or any media, you do you. I think peoples honest takes are fascinating (said in victoria van gale voice) and even just people speaking their mind shows that they are interested and they care so that matters. Also not one singular post triggered this, its just been on my mind as I surface level read things so no stressies.

When It comes to the cut episodes, I'm seeing some people assume that whatever was cut would have fixed some of the crits they may have had about the season..and who knows, maybe yes? But I'd say ultimately probably not. Not because they dont include things that people want to see, or may have some topics people want expanded on ..but because thats just impossible in the grand scheme of things.

I mean this applies to shows in general, not just hilda. Every person who watches a show has their own idea of what the show represents to them. For some of its more of the surface events or characters where as others connect it with a deeper emotion. A lot of people respond to different tones of the episodes, which there are many. Some people prefer the one off adventures that stand alone as their own stories and others want to see more of a stronger through line. Some may see a new character and expect a new arc and thread, while others wonder why we couldn't've used a previously introduced character. Some may read between the lines more and others may take what is presented as very straight forward and literal …and no one is WRONG, because our big wrinkly brain meats all have their own tastes and ways of imputing information.

Television animation is rife with factors that actually futz with the quality and ability of the team to make a beautiful, amazing product like EVERY DAY. The script process and what goes into production is just one. The team is made up of many creatives all with their own varied experiences and voices just like the audience. In order for people to have their own voices and say, you are going to end up with some things that hit better then others, especially if the team is allowed to grow and experiment and play a little. Hilda has always been a show where we've been able to have a lot of creative say, and i think that sincerity comes through ! but with the sincerity and that humanity, it also means that there are going to be things that arnt going to make sense in the grand scheme of things lol. Even the writers and creators and producers have differing opinions on what to explore and dive into, probably more so then fandoms haha. Having more episodes may scratch some itches but not all, HECK, those episodes being cut could have re-allocated resources to other areas that helped elevate your fav ep of the season ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ who knows! Schrodinger's episodes! (also ngl I was having cold sweats over the scope of some of them as cool as they were. The season may have been shorter but it was intense..it takes a long time to do stuff that looks that clean and crisp)

Imperfect art is very human! Do the best you can at the time with the factors you have. I was given so much trust and freedom on my episodes, and I was just happy to do something fun that allowed me and my team to grow and learn. I was fucking STOKED to get a one off story because it was way less pressure for me to take my next step directing cuz just doing the thing is a feat. Any sincerity you feel cant come through if that means we're afraid that we cant make mistakes, or do a story choice ppl wont vibe with. All you can do is do the best you can, see if people are picking up what you're putting down, and grow from it for next time.

Anyway, just a thought ramble. Its not to say do or dont do this or think this way blah blah. I just love that storytelling is messy and complex and everyones gonna take it a lil differently, especially if you have a team where you allow lots of voices to have input. It is all just a big experiment to see if people leave with a particular experience by putting your resources into the things you have that matter, and try you best to distract from burnt edges or patched up holes that happened throughout the process of making the dang thing lol.

A day in the life

People often ask me what my typical day is like. The truth is that I don’t have a typical day. Occasionally I get to spend the whole day from waking to sleep in glorious creation (writing, editing, researching some historical or cultural tidbit I want to include, sketching out a character arc, maybe just vibing to music that gives me a feel for a character dynamic)! More often the whole day is business (interviews, meetings with editor or agent, going over numbers, fact checking, prepping talks). Most of the time it’s an unholy mishmash of both -- like today:

Woke up. Made breakfast. Let the cats out in the backyard while I enjoyed my coffee. Went for a walk for exercise and to wake up my brain, while chewing on a new idea. Came home eager to write... only to find out there’s an error listing on Amazon selling “the paperback version” of my latest book, which doesn’t have a paperback version yet -- which probably means some stores have been selling the ARCs (which you’re not supposed to sell), or possibly selling brand-new editions published in other countries as used (meaning I’m not getting royalties), or maybe selling some random gibberish-filled made-up book that they’ve labeled mine, ‘cause that happens too. No idea how long this listing has been up, but it’s probably been torpedoing my sales numbers. Tried to look at my sales numbers; portal login isn’t working. Emailed support. Then took unscheduled phone meeting about a payroll portal I use (I have one employee) that has gone sideways and created whole new problems. Solved problems! Employee will get paid on time! But lost an hour. Read contracts. Realized I never received the payment voucher (contract) for a short comic project I’m doing. My God I need more coffee. Found out a short story I sent off more than a week ago did not make it through spam filters. It’s a .docx file. Checked for viruses (none). Decided I needed more coffee even tho I’m not supposed to have more than X amount. Coffeemaker is broken (tears). Ordered new coffeemaker. Phone call with an old colleague from my higher ed days; “Your life must be pretty sweet now!” No, I’m doing the exact same shit every day that I used to do as an admin but now I get to think about using my time on writing, without actually being able to use my time on writing. It’s 1 pm and I’m thinking “What a day.”

(Sidenote: Tumblr’s gif search now brings up some, uh, interesting results. The pornbots have been real busy here too I see! “What a day” brings up so many titties. So many.)

Anyway. I do have a pretty sweet life these days, ngl. But I’m venting here so that people who have any ideas about how glamorous things are for a bestselling author... yeah, no. Work is still work, even in the arts.

We’ve seen it with Sebek a couple of times, even though Sebek doesn’t really obliterate him psychologically (he is much weaker than Idia in this sense…), but I think Idia tends to talk back. Idia is quite stubborn, and talking back and escalating the situation is one of his biggest defence mechanisms. He is the master shit-talker and a genius of snark, so he might win against the majority of people + he is so self-deprecating that not a lot of people would know what to say to him to actually hurt his feelings – Idia berates himself much worse than that on a regular basis + expects that everyone hates his guts anyway. But I don’t think it’s impossible to shut him up using only verbal abuse… Lilia might be the one who succeeds at that, actually.

And I can’t tell you how to deal with your friends, since I don’t know what kind of relationships you have, but I always say it: a friend should be able to see past someone’s interests and be open-minded, and not make you feel horrible for liking certain things that don’t harm anyone. And you don’t even like those things – you just ignore them and like something completely different. How is it supporting me? It doesn’t even affect stuff that we post and draw – I would’ve drawn all that anyway.

If you want to hear it: I don’t support any of the problematic themes that I draw in real life. This is such an obvious thing to me, such a given, such a common sense thing, that it’s honestly very offensive that someone might even consider that this isn’t the case simply because I draw certain stuff. Please note that you are not offending me, Anon, you’ve done nothing wrong and I’m just venting back. People throw assumptions so easily just to harass us or their friends for supporting us, those are such big words and allegations, it’s honestly messed up that this is a norm.

But I digress. I could only suggest you to reflect on your relationship with those people and try to make compromises that make sense for you. It’s easy to say, but try not to let them bully you.
