Elora

The 19th century was a wild period for Konstantinos* (*now using the diminutive 'Dinos') The Greek fought for their freedom against the Ottomans and in Constantinople this was met with heavy repercussions. I'm not going too deeply into that now, but it's the background of the time that followed. A lot of reforms followed eachother quickly. The devshirme system got replaced by universal conscription, the banking system reformed, guilds got replaced by modern factories, the first telegraph, steam powered ferries and railworks were established, girls could attend schools (albeit with a heavy focus on housework), homosexuality got decriminized and the edict of Gülhane declared equality before the law for Muslims and non-Muslim Ottomans,... just to name a few.

Konstantinos met a remarkable women in his search for an assistant. Which he married over time. Her name was Elora. At the intake she stated she could do the work of two men with a finger in her nose. He would have her for half pay, he said. She would not work for half pay, she needed a fulltime job to pay the bills. She would only drop her price if he'd marry her. So that's what happend a few years later.

Her late father used to be part of a printing press guild. She knew how to do administration. She could read and write in several languages and she had incredible eye for detail. She picked up restauration techniques like it was nothing. She really enjoyed working on complex things.

Konstantinos took on forging money, as a hobby, not as a means for extra income. It was fun to see how close to the real thing he could come. She got interested in it as well and it became their secret special interest. They had a lot of fun together.

At some point they wanted to test it in the field. The banking market at the time was really bumpy, risky and interesting. To white wash their stash they needed someone to blend in at the moneychanging shops. Someone who could walk in with a large sum without getting too much questions. "Who carries interests apart from wealthy men?" they questioned themselves "Handsome boys do."

But it had to be someone that they could trust. And then Konstantinos came with the idea that Elora could be the one. The idea was first met with laughter, but it did give her a thrill and she accepted. They worked together making the tailored clothing to perfection and enjoyed their little scheme. Konstantinos personally cut her hair in a fashionable mens manner and they figured out how to bind safely and ran tests to do finishing touches with make-up.

And it worked. The youth was quite the headturner and nobody questioned the money, with such looks ofcourse he found a rich sugardad. Good for him.

However Elora drew attention also to a local community she (and her husband) knew nothing about. A woman introduced Elora to her lesbian friends, of whom some were crossdressing. They welcomed her thinking she was some rare unicorn. This new community made her question her own sexuality a bit, but in the end she came to the conclusion it just didn't matter. She did realise that she was tired of her established life though and she could use a new start. Living with Konstantinos was ok, but not great. Without her husband knowing she saved up enough with her scheming and interest business to have a large sum of cash to ran off with her lesbian bestie. They faked her death and Konstantinos never had a fucking clue he was tricked. They lived happily ever after in Greece with a big house and three cats, the end.

There's some dude (derogatory) on FB who is PISSED people are pricing their farm fresh eggs at $2 and $3 a dozen instead of $4+, saying it's "disrespectful" and "undignified" and "I'm trying to feed my kids" like Sir, you are on a Facebook group page bitching about your neighbors egg prices because your pet chickens aren't earning you a living wage and you think it's your neighbors' fault, you do not have a leg to stand on here wrt dignity.

Also half the answers are like "I give them to friends and family free" or "I donate them to food banks" or "I'm making them affordable to folks who might not otherwise be able to get them now that they're so expensive in the store" and "if you think you're going to turn a profit keeping backyard chickens you have been wildly misled" and so on, and so forth, and I'm so living for it.

and I can tell you right now, he did NOT like my answer of "if you're trying to feed your kids, I hear eggs are edible."

#chickens #like buddy you are never going to actually make a profit #and if by some miracle you do #it's going to be VERY SMALL #Considering the money you put into building or buying a coop #plus feed and bedding and equipment (waterers feeders perches etc) costs #egg cartons and enrichment and gas to go get the feed #the cost you (personally) probably put into building the egg stand you mentioned #a 50lbs bag of feed will feed 12 adult chickens for 8 days #12 chickens generally lay 6-12 eggs per day #usually less in the fall and may even stop in winter #a 50lb bag of feed is usually $12-15 #and you wasted the first 6 months going eggless until they were old enough to lay #and that doesn't factor in oyster shell or anything else you may need to do for them #like worming or treating for coccidia or anything #and doesn't take into account your time #like asjh;dsfkgdh you really thought you were gonna make a buck doing this???#wank for ts

The application

"It was around eight, I believe, when my doorbel rang. I was not expecting any visitors and as such I ignored it. You know how I am. I'm not even excusing myself. People should know better. The work is piling up after all. But the doorbell got continuesly pressed... I was THIS close to loose my mind... I opened the door, ready to kill a man.

Ohh, You think it's funny, Herakles? It is not...

And there she was, this peculiar woman. Even less expected, but equally bothersome. Anyhow I was less ready to kill a woman so I gave her the benefit of the doubt."

"You let her in?"

"Absolutely not! Why... why is it you are snickering? I came to tell you my story, why must you intervene to laugh about my misfortune?"

"I am sorry, please continue"

"As I was saying. She was at the door and I asked her what her business was. She said she heard that I was looking for an assistent. And she wanted to apply for that function... in person. I told her to beat it. I told her... I did not need a wife but someone with experience in the workfield. Now this uncanny little thing, she got so rude to me. She replied: "rumor has it you need both".... Stop it! It is NOT funny...

I slammed the door in her face, Right there. The nerve of some people."

"she is right, though"

"Oh you, shut it. Let me tell the story"

"It doesn't end here?"

"Do you want me to, or?

"I'm all ears now!"

"So... where was I... ohh yes. So I just continued what I was doing and so on... I didn't sleep so well because of that whole ordeal. I do have feelings. Anyway... then the next day when I opened the door to buy a sandwich, she was STILL there. I didn't quite know what else to do, so yes, I let her in. It was a moment of weakness. It was a most bizarre turn of events but we actually had a delightfull talk... and... I'm seriously contemplating to hire her even though it feels wrong. Truth be told; with her background she seems to be a better candidate than anyone I spoke over the last five, maybe ten years. But still... I am just so very tired and desperate to find someone. It's SO hard to find decent assistents nowadays. What do you say?"

"You can give it a try? If she is determined enough to stand at your doorstep all night, I'm sure she can find a way to work around your shortcomings"

"That is true. But you could have phraised it a little kinder?"
