aziraphale and crowley try to perform the tiniest most unobservable fraction of a miracle together and they end up producing a massive burst of power so astonishing in scope that it sets off alarm bells in heaven where it can be seen as an enormous purple beam and radiates with a force twenty-five times the energy needed to raise someone from the dead. we’re told only an archangel could perform an act of such earth-shaking consequence which again is the result of them trying to exert their abilities in the subtlest way possible so can you imagine what they’re going to be like in bed? talk about the second coming. in this essay i will

Miraculous Energy
Guys, I think I found a hole in the plot. We should probably walk through it together and see what we find.
inspo citation by @ritz-writes
Originally this post had to do with holding hands.
The 25 Lazari Plume
In S2E1 they hold hand through the conduit of Gabriel and perform "the tiniest, most insubstantial, fractional half a miracle we have ever performed. No traces of anything miraculous left behind. No- no- no alarm bells ringing in Heaven" miracle.
Tumblr media
Even though they were trying to be surreptitious, they failed drastically. Common fanon is that their combined angelic and demonic energy, or the power of love, creates a holistic power greater than the sum of its parts. The result:
Tumblr media
A miracle of more energy than anyone knows what do with: per Shax, "a miracle of enormous power... the kind of miracle only the mightiest of Archangels could've performed."
But.
This isn't the first time they've combined their powers to perform a miracle.
Two quotes from Gail Neiman:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The instance in question:
Tumblr media
Theory:
There are at first glance two solutions to this paradox. Either
a) They did create a burst of energy but everyone above and below Earth was so freaked out by them having just survived hellfire and holy water (respectively) that they were like "yeah that tracks and we're not touching it with a 10 foot pole," or
b) They did not create a burst of energy in the body swap, and therefore the plume of power didn't have to do with the boys combining powers but instead has something to do with either (b1) Gabriel or (b2) the nature of the miracle being performed.
I don't like (a) because Saraqael is so dismissive of the idea that Aziraphale could have performed such a miracle. It creates a narrative inconsistency.
We are left with (b), and since purple is the color of Gabriel's divinity this would be narratively consistent. (b2) doesn't track because the nature of the miracle being performed is fundamentally the same: in S1E6 they were (what in other fantasy fiction is frequently called) glamouring to hide their identities, and they did the exact same thing to Gabriel in S2E1, obfuscating his angel identity with a made-up human one.
So, yeah. It perhaps doesn't lean into our preferred conceptualization of the super-powerful duo, but it does fit the evidence.
~~~
It looks like @ineffable-suffering already put forth this theory, I just missed it. You can read it here: What if it wasn't Aziraphale and Crowley who performed the 25 Lazarii miracle?
~~~
special shout-out to @flameraven for the scripts, you make my life much easier now that I can copy-paste quotes instead of transcribing.

Good Omens: Amazon Prime Trivia
During episode 2x02 Amazon gives this trivia: 'Neil Gaiman comments on this miracle: "In the Bible, Jesus brought Lazarus back from the dead. It's a big miracle that takes a lot more power than Aziraphale could must. This is twenty-five times that."'
Tumblr media
Aziraphale could not do that powerful miracle on Jimbriel alone, he needed to work together with Crowley (season 3~???)

okay look. i can get being a little mad at Aziraphale because we have to be mad at someone, right (though I recommend redirecting said anger to our bestie Neil Gaiman)? But please don’t suggest that he just left for a promotion. That he went ‘Heaven is good, peace out Crowley.’ The only thing I will accept annoyance towards Aziraphale for is because of him saying “you’re the bad guys” instead of “they’re the bad guys.” Because… fair. What the fuck, Aziraphale.
However, the whole leaving Crowley thing wasn’t because he wanted to. It was because of this.
Tumblr media
You see Aziraphale’s eyes? That’s what panic looks like. What fear for the love of his life looks like. The point of saying that wasn’t ’hey you can make Crowley an angel again’ it was ‘come quietly or we’ll erase your boyfriend and take you anyway.’ Or ‘we’ll erase both of you,’ either way not exactly appealing options. Aziraphale left to save Crowley. Not because of some misguided belief that Heaven Is Good, not because of a promotion.
to shades of gray, everybody.

I Can Make A Difference
My thoughts on the theme for Day 2 of the Nice and Accurate Prophecies event!
See my meta here about Aziraphale's elevator grin and why I completely believe he has a Plan (always with the capital letter).
If I'm being honest, I don't know what I believe his Plan is. But, what I do want to talk about is his character and what I think he's going to bring to Heaven.
I firmly believe that the Metatron only cared about separating Crowley and Aziraphale because he was scared of their combined power.
Tumblr media
I mean, these two already stopped Armageddon once when they teamed up. Now they are performing 25 Lazari miracles when miracles are usually measured in centilazari or millilazari. Neil even says it's mostly millilazari, which is 1/1000 of a single lazari. Their combined power is insane and they weren't even trying. So, of course they must be separated.
And the easiest way to do this? Take the easily manipulated one and bring him back to Heaven, of course. Who cares that he's in a position of power? All it takes to get him to agree to anything you want is a little bit of mirrored speech patterns, support for his favorite activity of ingesting human substances, and some flattery. He couldn't be more easily controlled, right? RIGHT?
Tumblr media
But, what the Metatron didn't know, couldn't possibly have known, is that Aziraphale is the angel with an overdeveloped sense of right and wrong and the backbone to stand up for it at all costs.
And he's not going to be as easy to get rid of as Gabriel was, because the problem (for the Metatron) with Aziraphale is that he's not going to tell Heaven, "No," And make it easy for them to fire him. That's what Gabriel did, and it was immediate demotion. But Aziraphale? He's going to talk about it, he's going to ask questions about it, or even flat out lie about it, and he's going to make them doubt their own plans. Probably not the Metatron, but all the other angels? Absolutely.
Want to know how I know?
Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He's been standing up to people, lying, and convincing them to do things he wants them to for literal millennia.
The Heaven v. Hell fight could've just continued right along, but in comes Aziraphale, asking questions about if it's the Great Plan or the Ineffable Plan, and suddenly no one knows for sure and the whole thing falls apart.
He convinces Crowley with little more than a look to make Hamlet a success.
He stands up to the archangels in the Job minisode, and when that doesn't work, he fakes it with his bestie, and outright lies to seal the deal.
He's going up to Heaven and he's going to make those idiots do the right thing regardless of how they feel about it, and he's going to do it in a way that makes them think it was their idea in the first place.
The Metatron may be a master manipulator, but two can play that game. And my money is on Aziraphale.

What if Metatron proposal wasn't what we think?
I made a dream. Last night. And I woke up with an idea that keep turning and turning in my mind.
Please follow my delirium.
Let start with the facts we know:
1. "25 lazari miracle": when our ineffable idiots try to do a teeny weeny miracle to hide Gabriel, they instead make a powerful one, that suddently make angels think that an arcangel is involved.
Tumblr media
2. In S1, the ineffable bureaucracy (before actually being ineffable bureaucracy) accuse Aziraphale and Crowley of having stopped the Armageddon: hell nor heaven want it to stop, they want a proper war, they want to WIN the war, not to avoid it.
Tumblr media
Aziraphale and Crowley stop the great plan, but above all they made at least 20 thousand angels and demons unhappy.
3. Metatron is an asshole. He is devious, he is manipulative, and he is one of the first who wanted war and who saw his plans destroyed because of Crowley and Aziraphale.
Tumblr media
4. Heaven is planning the Second Coming: the plan for Armageddon has already gone terribly wrong, mistakes with the Second Coming cannot be allowed. And.. Who are the only ones who can endanger the new plan? the ones who stopped the old one.
So, I am the Metatron, I have a Plan, and I MUST succeed. So I have to stop Crowley and Aziraphale. How? Parting them. How? I might ask a certain Angel to come with me go heaven to be the new Supreme Arcangel, knowing that a certain demon could (and would) never follow him.
Tumblr media
But I really want Aziraphale to be a Supreme Arcangel? That Aziraphale who has already created so many problems? Absolutly not.
All this stuff to say that, for me, Aziraphale now hasn't a iridescent white dress, while he tries to "make the difference". No. For me, he is trapped somewhere, harmless, from the moment the elevator doors opened.
We have an Angel in distress, but this is not bastille, and his demon can't simply rescuing him (because he can't perceive that he's in danger but most of all because his heart now is broken).

Aziraphale did not get the job offer of Supreme Archangel because Metatron thinks he shows potential to be a good and effective leader.
Aziraphale got the job offer because Metatron thinks he is an angel who survived execution by Hellfire and then performed a 25 Lazari miracle alone to protect Gabriel, whom Heaven had just punished for insubordination, and perhaps this alarmingly powerful outlier of an angel might be sympathizing with the underdog a little too much.
Are you familiar with the wisdom of dealing with a problem employee by giving them a promotion?
When Metatron said Aziraphale was the only choice for the job, he meant the only other angel powerful enough to do the things Aziraphale supposedly did was Gabriel, and that guy just ran away with a demon.
Aziraphale got the job offer because Metatron needs to get control over this rogue element and keep him close, where he can watch him.
Imagine how Metatron and the Archangels are going to react when Aziraphale is eventually revealed to be a Principality of average individual power who thinks he can make Heaven a better place by changing the rules from the top down, or stalling the Second Coming.
As though they would let him. As though Gabriel hadn't tried that already.
They're going to eat him alive.

Saraqael isn't real
I wrote a piece on the source of energy for the 25 Lazari Plume. In it, I set aside the "holistic power of the duo" hypothesis, that @dee-morris actually provides a very compelling argument for, on the basis of something Saraqael said. Which means that, in order to accept @dee-morris's hypothesis, I have to explain why Saraqael is an unreliable source, and why no one around her seems to realize that except one demon in particular.
Let's get started.
The Hypothesis
When Aziraphale and Crowley did their body swap at the end of Season 1, it generated a lot of energy, because it is the same miracle that they perform to hide Gabriel.
Tumblr media
Word of God has also stated that this took "Big Miracle Energy"
Tumblr media
Why I Set it Aside
I ignored this because Neil is a lying liar and I treat him as such.
I also relied heavily on the disbelief from Saraqael that Aziraphale would be capable of casting such a miracle.
Why I Should Not Have Set it Aside
The Metatron makes a statement at the end of S2E6 about the de facto partnership between Crowley and Aziraphale. This implies that he knows about the body-swap that occurs in S1E6, since we know that Michael started surveilling them long before that. Also, a "big energy" miracle should have set off alarms in Heaven. Just because we didn't witness it doesn't mean it didn't happen, and that it didn't put all of Heaven on alert that they had collaborated in this way.
What that says about Saraqael
But Saraqael may not be a reliable source of information because she didn't exist at the time that this happened.
Who Crowley "Doesn't Remember"
(and we should not misconstrue this as "has forgotten, which we were doing)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Saraqael and Furfur are both characters introduced in Season 2 that have memories of significant events with Crowley, but Crowley doesn't remember them. There are two explanations for this.
Crowley's memory was wiped and he hasn't retrieved these particular memories.
These beings were created post-facto with false memories that Crowley doesn't have because they never actually happened.
Why doesn't anyone else notice a problem?
Everyone else acts like Furfur and Saraqael belong because they may have gained new (false/implanted) memories when these beings were created. But Crowley has more control over his memories than other beings do. He claws back memories that were lost. Who's to say that this doesn't also make him immune from receiving implanted, false memories?
Crowley's understanding of this situation
Crowley doesn't know that some beings are new constructs; he thinks he's forgotten them because of his memory loss. I infer this because he owns that he doesn't remember them; if he knew that they were constructs and that he's supposed to have implanted memories, he would probably pretend to have those memories. This might be a stretch but it's my thought on the matter.
Who Else is a Construct?
fucking Maggie that's who Please read "What's Up with Maggie?" by @iammyownproblematicfave through the lens of her being completely fake with implanted memories that are also implanted into others, like Nina. Memories that don't correspond with reality, like having been at the shop for [forty?] years and not noticing that Mr. Fell hasn't aged a day.

Self-Actualisation in Good Omens [inspired by this thread]
Have you ever watched Lucifer? If so, you're coming here with a good foundation of what self-actualisation is.
Why do we care about another show? Well, Neil had a hand it it's creation, so it's not far-fetched to think some ideas might float over to Good Omens
Tumblr media
What is self-actualisation and how does this work in Lucifer? By definition, this means realising one's own potential. In Lucifer, this is a magical trait that reflects how a soul perceives itself, then shapes that into reality. In humans this means where they go in the afterlife. Those with perceived guilt go to Hell, while the rest go to Heaven. For angels this manifests through their physical appearance (e.g. wings!) and their divine powers (including type of powers, strength of powers, and vulnerability to death). Lucifer's wings and physical appearance change multiple times throughout the show to reflect his self-hatred, going full 'devil mode' when he feels particularly guilty and monstrous.
How does this fit in with Good Omens? Neil confirmed that Crowley's wings begin to grey while talking to Aziraphale in 2x01 'In The Beginning' scene. At this point, Crowley has begun to question God but is not yet Fallen. From this conversation alone, his wings have already begun to change colour toward the 'demon' black wings he has today.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also think it's interesting that only some demons have animalistic traits, and how it affects them varies. Hastur (toad/maggots), Ligur (toad), Beelzebub (flies), Furfur (split tongue), Dagon (scales?). Interesting Shax has no 'odd' traits.
Crowley seems very affected by his snakey-traits. He can change into a snake, tends to hiss when he forgets himself, and may or may not have snakey feet. Most interestingly, he has snake eyes. The fact that he did not maintain his snake eyes during the body swap is strange to me. If he was 'cursed' with them then they would've stayed with him in Aziraphale's body, but it was able to transfer over to Aziraphale's appearance just like everything else Crowley chooses to wear. But why the sunglasses? Well, if he's self-actualising a deep, hidden guilt, then he wouldn't have conscious control over his eyes. Neil has hinted that Crowley is an unreliable narrator of his involvement in his Fall. I think Crowley is burying the truth deep down and it's self-actualising.
What about holy water & hell fire, though? Well, bullets and swords only ever hurt Lucifer depending on how he was self-actualising. Sometimes they hurt him, sometimes he was invulnerable.
It's not a conscious on/off switch, it's deep down in your soul but manifesting in reality! They have zero idea it's happening.
We could also consider the 25 lazari miracle - is it a reflection of how strong Crowley & Aziraphale feel when they work together?
The whole plot of the book and S1 revolves around the idea of nature vs. nurture. Adam chooses to be a human ("Reality will listen to you").
What else does the book tell us?
"[Aziraphale & Crowley] both were of angel stock, after all."
"Don't tell me about genetics. What've they got to do with it. Look at Satan. Created as an angel, grows up to be the Great Adversary. Hey, if you're going to go on about genetics, you might as well say the kid will grow up to be an angel. After all, his father was really big in Heaven in the old days. Saying he'll grow up to be a demon just because his dad became one is like saying a mouse with its tail cut off will give birth to tailless mice. No. Upbringing is everything. Take it from me."
So this begs the question, what separates demons from angels? Does God decide? God is pretty big on free will and playing Her own ineffable game so...
This could open some interesting doors for season 3.

About the 25 Lazari miracle??
Hullo dearly beloved Good Omens fandom.
So, we all know by now that between hell and heaven, heaven is the one more strict when it comes to tracking and monitoring miracles; RE, Aziraphale once mentioned he was reprimanded for doing so many miracles (or something like that).
Tumblr media
So, about the 25 Lazari miracle. Kinda makes me wonder now that when the half-miracle Crowley and Aziraphale did to hide Gabriel was supposed to be a "tiny miracle", why is it that only Heaven was alarmed or triggered? And even when Crowley was hinting on Shax, "Who says it wasn't me?", Shax pushes it off. I mean, my point is, why was Crowley's miracle detected by Heaven and not by Hell?
[For now, I take this as more than a hint towards Crowley being a former Archangel of sorts, not necessarily Lucifer (well, since NG already said they were different, and this is a topic for a different day)] I'm definitely not the first one to think of this.
Like, did I miss the part where heaven can also monitor the miracles being done by demons, such as Crowley? Or a part where Hell just doesn't care about demons miracling miracles away as Crowley does. But that's kind of off because Crowley has been on the watchlist of some of the demons, so someone must noticed his miracles, particularly that big of a miracle. And also, when he did a good deed, he was punished and pulled back to hell for some time.
[Edit: Beelzebub would have noticed something's off as well and she would've confronted Crowley by then as well. She might have been able to put the pieces together and figured it out by herself. But that didn't happen. Shax was the one who has been going up and down.]
I guess what I'm really trying to ask is: somewhere in the ineffable bureaucracy of heaven, does Crowley's miracle(s) still count as a(n) angelic miracle(s)?
But then again, we do see him literally pull his miracle upward, pulling from down hell, compared to Aziraphale's downward hand gestures as pulling from heaven.
We can definitely factor in the following as well:
- they were holding Gabriel, so the miracle could have been amplified
- Crowley is a really powerful Angel demon
- Crowley and Aziraphale complement each other, and they are therefore powerful together (which some of you have already pointed as the reason why Metatron is trying to rip them apart)
Like I know Aziraphale is not just a low ranking or a weak angel because after all, he was the Guardian of the Garden of Eden. But he doesn't seem to be the kind to be making 25 Lazari miracles in just a tiny effort.
Tumblr media
Oh, Crowley, you Pandora's box.
How did you become the Angel who "Let there be light." to the Demon who vaguely sauntered downwards?
Tumblr media
And what specific sets of questions did you ask for you to fall from God's grace?
Tumblr media
What part do you play in this ineffable chess game? Or are you, just like God, watching from the outside?
