Alright then, by popular demand, and by popular I mean at least one (1) person asked for it:

The Gossip Girl HIMYM AU that I will never write

this is....this is SO long, but you know who I am, and I am not brief. and since the tags are still goofy I'm just warning you now. and putting the meat of the post under the cut.

For starters, there’s the building of the core 5, the friends who’ve known each other forever. Now, you may think the obvious choice for the lead, Ted, a professional grade-a sap who gets his heart put through the ringer before he meets the titular Mother would be Daniel Humphrey Professional Yearner, BUT the more I thought about it, the more I wanted to do this:

Blair Waldorf as Ted. And Dan as Tracy, The One Blair finally meets on a Hamptons train platform.

And nobody dies or gets divorced, because...

Oh, and obviously everybody’s gay.

Here me out under the cut:

Blair and Vanessa Abrams were roommates at…I’ve thought NYU, but I also thought it would be interesting just to have them meet at Yale (plus like, Dan is at NYU, so). They clash at first, for obvious reasons, but after a battle at the Parents Weekend event, they bond over their fraught relationship with their parents, and then become best friends after getting caught in a snowstorm trying to drive back to the city on Thanksgiving Break. (Yale would obvi make the road trip make more sense). Nate meets the both of them in their freshman hall, and he and Vanessa fall hard for each other during orientation week and have been together ever since. Making the central Marshall/Lily relationship Natessa, which I think works the best, they would carry that same goofy energy, while also being Blair’s self-assigned emotional guardians. Vanessa has that mom-friend “I am the sole possessor of the brain cell” energy Lily has, plus the artistic passions and struggling to realize them, even at the cost of her relationship. And Nate has the shucksy-doodles bi-coded lovable goofball himboness of Marshall Eriksen, who’s internal conflict is often about balancing the practical and idealistic – but Nate’s has more to do with grappling with his family’s expectations, and Marshall’s is more about his own.

A Natessa plot of them getting engaged, then calling the first wedding off because Vanessa gets a fellowship far away sounds like a conflict that would be very in line with their characters, as would the fallout of not only Nate taking time to forgive Vanessa, but Blair would as well. That bit in the s2 xmas episode of “But you never apologized to me! You left me too.” – I could see that. Blairnessa bffs rights.

After graduation, V scrapes together a living as a contractual production assistant, her filmmaker dreams inching to the side for the service of the cash. Okay, I toyed with the idea of lawyer!Nate, but you know what I like better? Taking a page from both Lily Aldrin’s book AND our discourse about different career paths for Natie and making him: a schoolteacher. A softhearted himbo of a kindergarten teacher. He’s very good at it. When he and Vanessa get engaged he is also going for his masters in education (bc he loves teaching, but he wants to affect change at a higher level by being an administrator someday). (Nate would also “rescue” a goat after a farmer brought one to show-and-tell to his class.)

Blair trades her art history degrees for paying her dues at her mom’s atelier. Somewhere along the way, they pick up their group’s lovable ne’er-do-well, Carter Baizen. He, like Blair, is another disaster bisexual, but he, unlike Blair, is more of a scapegrace about it (but definitely not to Barney Stinson levels, because this is my au and I do what I want). (Have Blair and Carter ever hooked up? I think never knowing/always being vague about it would be a funny gag). Nate & Carter would also absolutely have that chaotic goober vaguely homoerotic best friendship that Marshall & Ted & Barney have.

And HERE. Here is why I wanted to have Ted!Blair, for the potential offered by our Robin character: Serena. A significant will-they-won’t-they romance arc for Blairena. They lock eyes across a crowded room, Carter urges his best friend Blair to introduce herself, cue the year of flirtation and back and forth.

(And honestly, Blair being so very Extra™ and telling Serena “I think I’m falling in love with you” on the first date seems on-brand for our girl)

Lots of Robin & Serena line up: privileged yet screwed up family background, effortlessly gorgeous, ambitious, it’s absolutely plausible that Serena could have been a teen pop sensation in Canada, on the record for not wanting to settle down too soon or be a mom, the last which ultimately leads to Blairena breaking up, because what they want out of life is too different. But it’s impossible for them to imagine life without each other, so after the dust of the breakup settles, they stay friends. They would also be dumb enough to make a “if we’re still single when we’re 40” marriage pact. They break up after their anniversary dinner, when a waiter brings a diamond ring-garnished glass of champagne to the wrong table and Serena says, “No, no, no, B, you cannot do this to me, no! No, no, no!” prompting a discussion about their conflicting goals for the future. It’s also a week before Vanessa and Nate’s wedding, so they keep it quiet until the couple is on their honeymoon to tell Carter.

[Robin also has a remarkably similar plot to Serena with her baby sibling and her issues with saying “I love you,” which is another surprising parallel.]

I would also like to present as evidence, your honor:

If by this point, you’re wondering if I’ve given any thought to the Furniture Question, yes, it’s this: chip wiskers was Blair’s first bf that she was on-and-off with in college, and Nate and Vanessa thought he was The Worst, and made Blair into a worse person. Because aside from being a total douche, he also cheated every time Blair’s back was turned. They reconnect for a sec in their late 20s, and Vanessa schemes to break them up because chip absolutely fails her Front Porch Test. Chuck = Karen

While Blair is reeling from The Breakup, Carter convinces her to come out with him on St. Patrick’s Day, and they end up at some ridiculous nightclub. Also there? Dan Humphrey, having been dragged out of the house by his little sister Jenny. They don’t meet, but Blair swipes the umbrella he left at coat check when she leaves and it starts raining. She keeps it for a couple years.

The burn between Serena and Carter is low and slow, because Serena was Blair’s for so long, but they are oddly compatible, and eventually they fall into bed together, and Blair is furious when she finds out, nearly causing the friend group to fall apart, but it doesn’t. Serena and Carter both, of course, catch feelings, but they stay in denial for a long time.

Meanwhile, Blair meets Louis, and they start pretty serious, but rocky, and one day, in an effort to end a fight, Louis proposes, and Blair says yes. Then gang thinks they’re moving too fast, but Blair, being Blair, digs her heels in, even when Louis bitchy little sister’s (Beatrice’s) wedding falls through and Louis and Blair decide to take over her wedding, which is, to put it lightly, the antithesis of what Blair Waldorf’s wedding should be. Louis (ever jealous) and Blair clash over Serena being invited to the wedding, and in an effort to even the score, Blair invites Louis’ ex, Estee, to the wedding too. Estee shoots her shot, and she and Louis run off together before the wedding, leaving Blair at the altar.

And I can so see Serena giving Blair a speech similar to the one Robin gives Ted, “You’re just disappearing into someone else’s house, someone else’s life, and that isn’t the happy ending that you deserve.”

Blair moves on, and throws herself into her design work, but it keeps leading nowhere, leading to another Vanessa life lecture: “Fashion is killing you, Blair. And it’s killing us to watch it killing you.” Louis, wrought with self-flagellating guilt, orchestrates an adjunct professorship in art history for Blair at Columbia, and after Vanessa’s prompting and the rest of the gang’s encouragement, she takes it.

She’s so nervous and tense her first day of teaching that she refuses to take questions from the class during her first lecture, and accidentally teaches the first 20 mins of ENG-405. In that class? Dan Humphrey.

Speaking of, a few brief “How Your Father Met Me” things before we continue:

The night Nate and Vanessa get engaged is Dan’s birthday, he and Jenny and a few friends are meeting at a bar in Brooklyn. Dan’s partner is running late, but when Dan gets a phone call from them, it’s the news that they’ve been in an accident.

He holes himself up after that loss, until Jenny has enough of it, and pesters him into going to a club with her on St. Patrick’s Day. While there, they run into an old acquaintance of his from Steinhardt, Paul, who’s teaching orchestra. Dan insists that he donate his old cello to Paul’s school, and invites him over. Paul mistakes it as an invitation to hookup (The Naked Man!) but he and Dan end up having a good conversation.

“Even if it sounds crazy, what is it you want to do with your life?” / “I want to be a novelist.” / “Okay. Then everything you do from here on out is in service of that.”

Dan applies to grad school at Columbia for creative writing, and also plays guitar part-time in his sister’s band, playing weddings, bar-mitzvahs, etc. etc.

When Jenny gets a fashion design opportunity in London, she bequeaths the band unto Dan, and leaves an empty room in the loft, meaning that Dan goes to Columbia also in need of a roommate.

He sits next to a guy named Elliot in his class ENG-405, who just moved to the city and is looking for a place.

OMG in this scene Tracy makes a joke about serial killers…and…Joe Goldberg lololololol

“Just promise me there won’t be any naked people in the living room.” / “Don’t worry. I am on permanent hiatus in the love department. I know it sounds a little old fashioned, but I think you only get just one. And, I got mine already.”

Aaaaand we’re back!

So Blair is hitting her stride as an art history prof, and one day she runs into this cute guy in the hall, Elliot, who’s a PhD candidate with a focus on Contemporary Literature. He was in the English class she accidentally taught on her first day of work. She really likes him, he’s cute, intellectually stimulating, but he calls it off because of school’s policy for protecting students, even though they're the same age, are in different departments, and have the same amount of degrees. Blair even goes over to his place to talk to him about it “Blair Waldorf in Brooklyn? Are you lost?” / “It isn’t Brooklyn I’m here for.”

She tries to plead her case, but keeps getting sidelined by stuff of Elliot’s that she swears is proof of their compatibility—a poster of Godard, a vinyl of In Rainbows, a copy of Rosemary’s Baby (“don’t tell anyone, but it’s my Valentine’s movie”), a sweatshirt that says “What Would Dorothy Parker Do?” (“it was a christmas gift from my friend Vanessa, I had no idea more than one existed!”)—only for him to say “That’s my roommate’s actually.”

Blair leaves The Loft without laying eyes on Dan, but she thinks she might have glimpsed his foot, and out of sheer awkwardness, she leaves so quickly that she forgets her umbrella, unwittingly giving it back to Dan.

Elliot said that he had “a bit of a roommate complex” on their first date, which really means that he was ass backwards crushing on Dan Humphrey, his roommate that he met on his first day of classes at Columbia. (though he doesn’t really realize it until after he breaks things off with Blair, and kisses Dan when Dan tries to comfort him – “how could she not love you?...the way you fall asleep doing the crossword…” conking out while trying to solve the nyt crossword sounds like Pure Dan tbh).

Elliot’s romantic turmoil doesn’t last too long, because as he’s figuring out life as a bi guy, he meets, *drumroll* Serena’s little brother, Eric!

While Blair is doing this, Serena and Carter try dating, and implode after a few months. They’re just…not ready for each other, no matter how much love there actually is. They try to move on, see other people, and for a while make a pretty good show that they are actually over each other.

In the meantime, Vanessa and Nate start trying for kids (though arguably one could say they already have three) she accomplishes a few doc projects, he gets a job at a big-time prep school, and Blair throws herself into academia, gets herself published, and gets tapped to put together her first exhibition. It’s a major project, so it takes a fair amount of time to put together. And while it’s happening…so many backslides!

Serena and Carter hookup, cheating on their partners. Carter shoots his shot, saying that he wants to be with her, and breaks up with his girlfriend, Beth, to be with Serena. But Serena can’t bring herself to do the same, staying with…uh…let’s say Colin.

Vanessa gets pregnant, and Serena thinks she does too after her hookup with Carter, but she finds out that she’ll actually never have kids. She acts like she doesn’t care, but however she planned her life, she still needs to grieve, and Blair is there for her even though she doesn’t know the whole story. When Serena finally tells her, it’s after she and Colin break up, over the fact that Serena doesn’t want kids. Blair has a backslide of her own, telling Serena “I love you,” which will be the last time she says it to anyone (in that context) until Dan.

Blairena breakup (without ever really getting back together), Vanessa and Nate have a baby (named…maybe Arlo? If we’re following the name after the grandfather pattern of Lily & Marshall), and Carter is…Carter.

He’s being his usual scapegrace self, and spends a night playing a game with Vanessa and Blair about how he can collect people’s numbers with increasingly ridiculous parameters. The girls eventually get bored, and con him into running an errand for them by hitting the drugstore and picking up take-out. His chosen “target” at the drugstore turns out to be *drumroll* Dan. and I can totally see Dan looking this guy over and thinking “oh, he’s so sad :/” and the “I think you were in love and then you messed it up,” and them having a deep conversation out on a bus bench and Dan telling him to stop screwing around and go get the girl. That night, and that conversation is when Carter starts to plan how he’ll propose to Serena. He wasn’t ready for her then, but he is now, and he knows that Serena is ready for him, too.

(Dan, at this point, is seeing somebody--let's make it Olivia, bc why not?-- but when Carter asks, “Are you two gonna go the distance?” Dan answers, “I don’t know. I still think I haven’t met the right person yet.”)

Blair’s career is on the rise, but on the night her exhibition opens, when Serena offers to go as her date, Blair delivers her to Carter instead, deciding to let Serena go. She had a feeling she knew what was going to happen next, but during cocktails in the gallery, Carter sends a text to the group: “Serena and I are engaged!”

She’ll only let herself say that she’s happy for them, but inside, Blair is—conflicted, and (okay this scene was the beginning upon which this entire cursed idea came from so) Vanessa finally gets Blair to admit to it. It’s the “Admitting it would make you the most awful person in this room, so I’m going to give you an out. Sometimes, I wish I wasn’t a mom. Sometimes I want to pack a bag in the middle of the night, leave, and never come back.” The confession is enough to get Blair to say, “Serena shouldn’t be with Carter, she should be with me.”

Blair and Vanessa talk. And V loves her life, it’s just that she doesn’t feel like she ever got a chance to do the work that she set out to do. She wanted to be a filmmaker, remember? But all she does is gig after gig, only surviving, and a baby on top of that? It never lets up.

Vanessa convinces Blair to let Serena and Carter book a wedding band, and then she talks to Nate. Nothing’s solved really, but both women feel better having the truth out there.

While Serena and Carter plan their wedding, deal with Serena’s difficult mother Lily, and try to out-cute each other, Vanessa starts putting herself out there with her work, and she writes a grant proposal for a documentary that gets accepted. The only thing is, it requires her to live a year in Barcelona. She freaks, thinking that she shouldn’t take it, but Nate, who’s been feeling cornered by his own job, stuck in the same politics of NYC prep schools, which is like the van der bilt pipeline 2.0, encourages her to take it. (He’ll just be the malewife, taking care of the baby, learning to make paella, and watching Spanish The Price Is Right, and he LOVES that idea).

At the same time, Blair’s work and publications get her a job offer at the Getty in LA (or MOMA in San Fran? Or maybe just straight up Paris? idk), and she decides to take it, because she’s not sure she can hang around once Serena is married to Carter.

Speaking of job offers, Nate gets one, to be a principal at his dream school (to bring in another sitcom, think Jess Day’s job in New Girl), but it’s time sensitive, and he accepts, even though he and V already planned on moving their little family to Spain. There’s a biblical level fight, but Vanessa caves, only for Nate to insist that No, we’re moving to Spain.

Serena and Carter decide to get married in the Hamptons, in the "backyard" of Serena's grandmother's summer home (it's more like a fancy rich person garden, we all know this). It’s a big whole damn weekend, after which Vanessa & Nate & Arlo and Blair will be leaving New York – or will she?

The band Carter and Serena originally booked falls through, bails a week before the wedding, but luckily, the BOTB’s husband used to live with the guitarist of one of the best wedding bands in the tristate area. They just had brunch with him, and his gig for the coming weekend just fell through! Wedding saved!

Before the move to Spain, Nate and the baby go visit his mom down in Newport, leaving Vanessa on her own. She hangs around Blair, which is how she discovers Blair is moving.

Blair takes a car service up to Amagansett, but Vanessa refuses on principle, and takes the train instead, and ends up sitting across the aisle from a nice guy, who—when she gets riled up from yet another passive act of aggression by Anne, her mother-in-law—asks if she’s okay and listens to her rant. And that’s how Vanessa meets Dan.

Dan shares the cookies that his sister sent him in a care package, and after dissing Anne Archibald they pivot to discussing French cinema and Jean-Luc Godard and the genius of Sergei Eisenstein.

Despite having made a new friend, Dan has some interpersonal drama of his own. When Elliot fell in love with a man over the bridge and moved out, Dan looked for a new roommate, and who should find him but Georgina Sparks. She’d not needed a place, but was interested in his band, and Dan being the guileless lil duckling that he is, invited her in, and she promptly took over. Now, she was trying to shove Dan out, likely in retaliation for not hooking up with her. Righteously incensed, he tells Vanessa all about it when he finds out, and she offers up her own brand of personal justice: steal the bitch’s van. So Dan does.

Georgina Sparks is a total firestarter, and spends the evening of the rehearsal dinner trying to stir up shit between all the friends. She is ultimately unsuccessful.

While carrying out his own variation on Abrams Justice, Dan comes across some knucklehead walking on the side of the road hauling luggage and a baby. Nate & Arlo took the Jitney up, which then broke down, and Nate foolhardily decided “I can walk that far.” He couldn’t. But Dan offers him a lift, freaks him out because Vanessa told Dan all about her husband, but they become fast friends. “Your wife is cool.” / “The coolest.” Dan vents about total fire starter Georgina, and Nate offers up advice about standing up for himself and fighting for what he thinks is right: a lesson he recently learned in standing up to his mother about his life choices.

At the inn, Nate and Vanessa are reunited, but Dan’s head of steam wears off. “There’s no defeating the devil,” he says. And then there’s a commotion on the patio outside, and Georgina storms in, shrieking about how “the maid of honor just punched me in the face” (Georgie had broken the bottle of 95 Dom Blair had brought for a rehearsal toast with the gang, and Blair responded accordingly). Dan laughs, unable to help himself, and Georgie throws a fit and quits the band “I’m going back to the new Guns n’ Roses!” Dan asks the bartender to send a glass of champagne to the maid of honor, and that’s the first drink he ever buys his future wife.

Riding the high of finally having the toxic Georgina out of his life, he leaves the inn to go to his girlfriend’s family’s Hamptons house. While there, Olivia springs a marriage proposal on him, and Dan realizes: he’s been holding himself back, being with someone safe, which means he doesn’t have to face moving on from what he’s lost, or risk being hurt so deeply again. But he realizes he’s ready to move on, he’s ready for it to be real again. So he says no.

He goes back to the inn, and the night clerk says “You’re in luck, father of the bride never checked in.” (because WVDW is and always will be a piece of shit!!!). Dan doesn’t feel that lucky, but he takes the key (he just needs one) and heads to his room alone. Even though he knows he did the right thing, ending it, he still feels—well, shitty. So he grabs his acoustic and heads out to the balcony, and plays his go-to song for when he wants to make himself feel better: “Moon River,” not knowing that the biggest Breakfast at Tiffany’s fan in the whole world is on the other side of the balcony wall, listening.

The day of the wedding Carter and Serena each have their own crises of confidence. Lily Rhodes (who’s been married four times) really rocks her daughter’s boat, but Eric & Vanessa calm her down. The big crisis though, is when she freaks, and decides the Blair is the person she should be marrying, but here’s the thing, Blair doesn’t feel that way anymore. Blair has really let Serena go, and she is trying to see her best friend’s married and happy together, damnit, even if she has to hold the shotgun herself, this wedding is happening.

And Serena says. “Fine, you’re right, we can’t run away together. So I guess I’ll just have to run away alone!” She makes a mad dash down the halls of her grandma’s old Hamptons mansion, out into the garden where they’re setting up the reception, and runs smack into the band’s guitarist. And that’s how Serena meets Dan (oddly not that different from their first meeting in canon).

“To be honest I’m not sure if I can go through with getting married.” / “Oh. Wow.” / “That’s it? You’re not gonna try to talk me out of it?” / “Okay, during that fall, you did kind of get to second base with me and we’ll always share that, but – I don’t really know you.”

He doesn’t try to talk her out of it, but gives her some solid advice to take three deep breaths. She does, and when she opens her eyes, there’s Carter. And everything is fine again.

After a long crazy road, Serena and Carter finally get married (Eric walks her down the aisle), and then, there’s the reception.

A few dances and a few glasses of champagne in, Carter finally recognizes the frontman of his wedding band. “Guitar-guy! Hey, remember when you told me to stop messing around and get the girl? Check it: I got her! What about you: you still dating that girl?” Dan shakes his head, and then Carter is hit with a piphony. Thee-piphony.

He tries to convince Blair to let him set her up with the guitarist, but she’s moving tomorrow, remember? And she has a train to catch.

Said train, of course, is delayed. So she waits on a bench, sheltered from the rain, reading Colette for the hundredth time, patience thinning by the minute. And then, a flash of color catches her eye, it’s an umbrella, and underneath it, the guitarist.

It’s a stupid idea. She’s moving away in the morning. But she can’t shake it, this feeling that she’s only ever let things pass through her fingers, that she used to want to live like a film heroine. But heroines ultimately don’t just let the story happen to them, they act.

So she walks up, taps the guitarist on his (really nice) shoulder, and speaks. They talk, they banter, they flirt, and it feels…right.

“You’re Elliot’s ex-roommate, right?” / “Yeah. And you’re the professor. I took one of your classes.” / “Really? Which one?” / “ENG-405.” / “English? I never taught – oh no.” / “Oh, yeah.”

“Wait. This is my umbrella. You totally stole my umbrella, Humphrey.”

“What are you talking about? I bought this.”

“Mmm-mm. This is mine. That’s my monogram on the handle. See?”

“So you stole and defaced my umbrella?”

“It’s mine.”

“Nuh-uh. I have proof. Sure it was ten years ago that I bought this, but I hoard all my receipts. Though…I did lose it for a little while there. I went to this club –”

“On St. Patrick’s Day.”

“And you left it there.”

“And I left it there.”

“And you never thought you'd see it again.”

“And I never thought I’d see it again. Funny how sometimes you just…find things.”

It’s both the most cinematic and most real Blair’s life has ever felt, and there’s only one thing to say. “Hi.”

“Hi.”

Commentary ~ Little Red Little Green Episode 18, “Fruits & Found Family”

While the posts by Little Red Little Green (LRLG) are among my most favourite candies, I’d like to remind everyone that they are fake rumours, and should be read and enjoyed as such. ie, all CPN below!

The English translation linked above is the only one authorised by the Fake Rumour House; therefore, please treat all content below as a very casual, very *unofficial* convo between fellow turtle friends! ❤️💛💚

With Chinese being a highly region-specific language, my reactions to it is necessarily filtered through my background, which is, admittedly, somewhat removed from Gg’s, Dd’s and LRLG’s. However, it is not uncommon for even c-turtles (and several times, LRLG themselves) to be lost with what they read / heard due to regional differences ~ which reflects the reality of communicating in the Sinosphere. In fact, the regionality of the dialects used by different “characters” in LRLG’s dialogues is among the most critical elements that make these posts so authentic-sounding, and so difficult to replicate. A fun activity of following LRLG is to watch c-turtles patch their regional knowledge together, from local slangs to food choices, to make sense of what’s going on.

Okay, with that all said *phew* ... onto the commentary! “p. X” refers to the panel number in the official English translation (there are 7 total in the Twitter post).

p1. “Fairy”

Likely referring to the similarity between Gg’s current role for 玉骨遥 (The Longest Promise) and LWJ. Dd was praising Gg for being “fairy-like”; Chinese “fairies” (仙) have a certain style especially in visual media, similar to ... LWJ’s ~ otherworldly, white robes that billow in the wind, peaceful to the point of distant, scholarly, delicate. In between the lines, Gg likely said he was simply playing LWJ (hence, the ”act another me” in the translation), which Dd protested... and said Gg was simply playing himself. Whether that means DD IS NOT LWJ!!!!! 😡😡😡 or something else, we’ll know what we get to watch the show!

p1-p2. “Heat”

Yes about the Chang’e 嫦娥 reference!! Despite Houyi 后羿 shooting down 9/10 suns and saving the day, his wife is, indeed, more famous (and therefore the star, the more powerful one), because she’s frequently featured in Mid-Autumn festival art, along with her pet rabbit 玉兔 (”Jade Rabbit”),:

Guess of the missing convo from Gg’s side: Gg had wanted to bring something to Hengdian (where the filming of The Longest Promise was taking place) to cool himself down, and Dd had said it wasn’t necessarily. Hence Dd’s “My bad my bad” and the promise to send that something to Gg.

The loveliest line in this segment for me—and for many c-turtles— is the one about white hair. Turning grey a common, but very old-fashioned way of expressing worry and poor Dd, who hasn’t even turned 24, is claiming he was turning white because he got so worried every time Gg complained about the heat (Aww).

Turning grey with worry isn’t limited to romantic situations — it may happen to doting parents with wayward children, for example, or to ancient patriots over their crumbling kingdom. However, it’s also one of the more (very!) dramatic ways to communicate tragic love in Chinese fiction before Western influence allows “love”, as a term / word / character, to be used explicitly in writing romance.

Here’s a little example, a little diversion that may be of interest. Those who are familiar with the Wuxia classic Return of the Condor Heroes 神雕俠侶 by Jin Yong 金庸, whether it’s the book or its numerous visual adaptations, may remember how the hero, Yang Guo 楊過, went white at his temples overnight after his Shifu and lover, Xiao Long Nv (小龍女), didn’t show up at the cliff at the end of his 16-year wait for her.

The 16-year wait, the invitation to Carmen to play Lan Zhan’s ancestor (when the two shared similarities in aesthetics and personality), were two of the three references from Return of the Condor Heroes I picked up from The Untamed (the last one was more specific—WWX mentioned Yang Guo’s master 獨孤求敗). This tribute is unconfirmed, but MXTX did say before that Jin Yong’s works were her inspiration. I also read a (small) discussion on whether LWJ’s hair carried a few pieces of white in the final episode, or if the lighter strands in it were a trick of the sunlight. (Here’s a screenshot of the approximate place to look!!)

While I lean towards the latter (the sunlight), turning white with worry, with love, is a tradition in Chinese storytelling. Here’s a little something I’ve noticed too, on this note ~ both in the actual interviews and in these fake rumours, Dd’s word choices, the way he conveys emotions are sometimes surprisingly traditional. It can be because of his background (which would require a study of how Luo Yang people and Koreans talk); it can be because the traditional way of talking allows for fewer words to be said, fewer things to have to be explicitly explained (example: LWJ), but the effect is that Dd has supplied the most romantic lines in LRLG’s posts because of that ~ romantic because it harks back to the rhythm, the themes of old poetry, of ancient stories that, as were true everywhere in the world, were about love.

Okay, back to the rumour (and hoping Dd won’t look like Bad Wig Yang Guo in a few more summers!) ....

The line after the one about white hair ... the way I understand the original Chinese sentence is “Heat is The Reason”: ie, anything Dd wants Gg to do and Gg disagrees, Gg would use heat as The Reason (R) to not do it. This anything may be eating, for example, which also has a strong possibility as conventional Chinese wisdom says that heat causes people to lose appetite. Dd’s worry would therefore be: Gg refusing to eat because he claims it’s too hot to do so.

“Corny joke” ~ the Chinese for this is, literally, “cold 冷 joke 笑話”, which becomes a pun as the gzry (team members)’s joke was about the (cold) winter and black hair. So... Dd threw a corny joke to combat a corny joke :D .

p3. “Apple”

The first half I also had to rely on c-turtles to help me interpret what it meant! Regional dialects aside, LRLG has captured dls’s very quick wit, the way his ideas freely hop from one concept to the next and this hopping carries traditional + popular cultural references that I know only a fraction of, not being a local after all.

I’ve read an additional interpretation of this segment: “big fruit” 大果兒 (as in dls: “Those are all big fruits, all big fruits”) is a Northern Chinese, traditional slang for women—dls might have connected that with the previous line in the convo about being Guowang, as explained in the translation, and “big and juicy” + “touch to feel” being suggestive phrases. Then, given the rare usage of the big fruit = women slang, dls expressed surprise that Dd understood what he meant, went on to say he expected Gg to know it (implying Gg could’ve taught Dd the meaning) ...

Which led to the entertaining part of this segment. Dd was like “You guys (= Gg + dls) talked?” Dls appeared to have thought of the scenario customarily inviting this question (scenario: someone on the verge of catching their spouse cheating) and began playacting that scenario, started to stammer ... as if he had just been got caught trying to chat up someone’s spouse ~ ”I-I-I....how to say it ...”. Dd caught on dls’s playacting and went along, continued with the “accusation”: “You’re stammering”. Dls then noted that Dd’s accusation was scary and Dd smiled, ending the playact ~ so, ah, readers, never mess with Dd’s spouse!! Dd gets scary!!

(BTW: ”nijia na kouzi” 你家那口子 was explained in the translation for a reason ~ It’s a warm, friendly term for a dear friend’s spouse. 😊)

p4. Lychees

Lychees. Has everyone tried them? It’s important not to over-eat them though...

In which the “Feeding Gg” saga continues! This segment is one of those that are wonderful for fic writers who wish to capture Gg and Dd in words. Gg, like many brought up in traditional families, has trouble saying “no” outright, which is often considered rude. As such, he resorted to delay tactics, something he had also done with the fried noodles in The Makeup Room BTS.

In the BTS, his delay tactics had been to argue that Dd hadn’t eaten his box of noodles and therefore, he couldn’t start (~2:35 mark)—as proper manners indeed dictated. In this dialogue, his delay tactics was to say he’d eat the lychees later, that the lychees would make him too full for the proper meal (rice).

A cute thing about this convo is that rather than pouting and grumbling his only being LWJ’s replacement (as he had hilariously done in the BTS), Dd had, apparently over the last three years, become an expert on countering such delay tactics. He peeled the lychees, which not only removed a major obstacle for eating, but also set a timer as peeled lychees get dry quickly (and Gg, despite being a picky eater, didn’t seem to like to waste food). He said the fruit could make appetiser. He got the help of their team members, who assured Gg that two lychees would be all right.

Gg’s response to the assurance... takes a little time to explain.

The original Chinese line for “Great, great, you’re so awesome” was 絕了絕了你們絕了。 “絕了”, a popular phrase used by Chinese netizens, was repeated three times.

絕, literally, means the extreme, the absolute, the end. 絕了 means pretty much the same ~ a thing that is 絕了 is standing en pointe at the edge of the cliff that is The Absolute End of a spectrum. It is the Ultimate. It can't be surpassed. It’s unbeatable.

絕了 is usually used in a positive sense, as in the English translation, with the positive being implied. If I say the LWJ photo above is 絕了, for example, I don’t need to specify that the extreme in 絕 stands on the good end. It’s understood given the audience of this post are mostly turtles (HELLO *waves*). We’re all heart-eyes here. We agree, without saying, that this photo is The Top, The Pinnacle; it can’t be better. 絕了 is higher praise than Excellent; it’s so good that there are no adjectives for it. Its own presence defines How Good It Is.

But 絕了 doesn’t have to be positive. If my audience is Su She ... he’s likely to take the same “This LWJ photo is 絕了” to mean the Mariana Trench kind of Absolute—the bottom of the bottom, the Unbeatable, Adjective-Defying Worst.

絕了 allows for that understanding too.

In this scenario, I interpret Gg’s 絕了 as taking the meaning of both extremes (which make it a fantastic phrase choice!): that Gg thought Dd and the team members were being both the Absolute Best (for thinking of Gg, caring for him) AND the Absolute Worst (for going against his wish to not eat!) Gg’s 絕了 also signals defeat; if Dd and his team members were The Absolute ... Whatever, then poor Gg had no choice but to yield to their wishes. I can already imagine his “I can’t believe I lose this way” Look (see: every rock-paper-scissors he lost, which was ... pretty much all of them), mixed with, perhaps, a healthy amount of bunny tooth warning (how dare Dd et al banded up against him)...

Those bunny teeth had to be taken care of, right? And so Dd went on to say lychees being good omen that ensure things would go smoothly for the eater... targeting Gg’s being a, as c-turtles call it, 小迷信 (literally, “Little Superstitious”, a young + adorable + superstitious person). Dd said that to help Gg justify the choice to eat, to make Gg feel better about his defeat.

(Of note: I had actually never heard of lychees being associated with good luck before, and a quick search online also didn’t yield any result. This could be a relatively rare association Google failed to catch ... or something Dd made up on the fly to make Gg happy.)

(Lychees have, however, been associated with romance. If Emperor’s Smile 天子笑 was The Love Drink in The Untamed, then what is Concubine’s Smile 妃子笑? Answer: it’s the RL name of a type of lychees, lychees being the fruit very much adored by Yang Yuhuan 楊玉環, the consort of the Emperor Xuanzong (685-762 BCE) of the Tang Dynasty and one of the four most beautiful woman in Chinese history. Since lychees had only been grown in southern China, the emperor had had the fruit couriered, in express mode involving many horses, to the palace up north to please his favourite wife. Lychees had become a symbol of love from that historical tale.)

Did Gg get Dd’s message then, the love and care packaged in those peeled, sweet fruit awaiting his bite? Yes, but not without a little more fight! “Eat eat eat, (I’ll eat) until you go bankrupt” is a literal translation of his final line. Tonally, I can see the following as being an alternative translation:

“Fine fine fine. I’ll eat, it’s not like I can bankrupt you by eating anyway!”

If it sounded a little sulky, that’s because it did ... a little sulky AND fiery. As expected from our favourite Chongqing Big Pepper 😂😂😂 (Poor Gg).

Dd smiled at that, needless to say. He won!!! He got Gg to eat!! The world shall rejoice!!

p5. “Showtime”

There’s a show coming up for Dd (the YH concert maybe?), and Gg offered suggestions.

The sweet point of this segment is about half-way down the conversation, in the piece of paper 📄 Gg gave to Dd (after “This is for you.”). Dd took the paper, noted the many words on it, and started saying 我把我整個靈魂, translated as “I bring my entire soul”.

c-Turtles have, based on these words, hypothesised that Dd was about to read out a quote that Gg had written on the paper, with the list of items Gg thought Dd should take, before Gg stopped him with a call of his name (“WYB”). The quote was included on the translation (”I give you my entire soul...only, a little good, love you.”) I have also talked about the same quote, in more detail, here.

I’m equally stumped on the final line of this segment. (Sorry!!)

p6. “Found Family”

It’s a heartwarming segment. While LRLG had previously noted that the TTXS bros had communicated with Gg, this segment made clear that they care for him like they do for Dd ~ as family.

* dls mailed Gg a lot of fruit for sharing with the film crew. “Family member needs to be impressive” is a rough translation, but this line does defy simple translation because 排面 a highly cultural concept that has much to do with the equally complex, Chinese concept of face (which this article explains... somewhat adequately). The message to take home is that dls cared enough about Gg that he wanted to make sure Gg wouldn’t lose face in front of the film crew; that, by having enough gifts (fruits) for everyone, Gg wouldn’t be viewed as cheap or inadequate or stingy, or whatever adjective that wouldn’t befit his top idol status. Because dls saw Gg as a member of his family.

* The prescription from hg had been mentioned in a previous LRLG rumour. 方子 is a Chinese medicine prescription, which, unlike Western formulations, is individualised both to the discomfort / ailment and to the “body constitution” of the person who'll take it, the latter deciding the kind of ailments the person is susceptible to, and which ingredients are expected to be more effective. Chinese medicine also places a strong emphasises on long-term conditioning, whether it’s for recovery from a certain condition or for general good health. A good 方子 is therefore a far more complex and personal thing than, say, a scribble of “paracetamol” / “acetaminophen” on a piece of paper. :D

* fg’s gift for Gg (xx) is something for the waist. A brace support, maybe? For example?

My favourite line in this segment is when hg asked what will Gg and Dd do when they reach hg’s age. Given that the last two items (the prescription and xx) were health-related, I interpreted it as hg worrying about Gg and Dd’s health when they grow old... with all the health problems they already have. It’s the kind of thing a worried parent say to their children ~ my mom has said the same thing to me as well. 😢

p6. “The Cat Paw”

Not quite sure what’s happening here ... not sure what the cat paw is. (Sorry!!) But that é in the translation is Dd’s signature laugh (collection here), which is written as 鵝 (”Goose”) in Chinese 😂.

p7. “The Cat Toy”

Dd appeared to be shopping for a cat’s toy (something that can “hook the cat” in the translation, such that the cat can entertain itself and not rely on human companionship as much). Gg had already bought the toy though and sounded quite proud of it, told Dd to return the toy. The implied cat was, of course, Nut (堅果 Jianguo)... which had been repeatedly referred to in LRLG’s posts as Gg’s daughter.

p7. “Cool vs Cute”

Gg is often viewed as cute, and Dd as cool. Did Dd dislike Gg taking cute pictures for public consumption? Were they scheming an exchange of image? :D

The GG & Li-Ning & Xianjiang Cotton Situation

I was asked to give my opinion. This is also for other bxgs who may have the same sentiment. You don’t have to agree with me but i hope you respect whatever it is I choose to share here. This is my blog and my space. I maintain this out of my pure enjoyment of the fandom and all the good it has given me. So let me address some of the points.

Li-Ning boasts their use of XinJiang Cotton

My simple answer here is, of course they will. This is not something new. Li-Ning is a celebrated olympic medal winning gymnast. A billionaire. You don’t get to that place in CHN w/out supporting the government’s agenda. In this case, that there is no injustice and persecution going on in Xinjiang. This brand, boasting about China made cotton, in their terms, shows patriotism and support for their country. This brand’s literal goal at first was to provide a local brand for Chinese athletes to wear in the Olympics. This is also not the first time that Li-Ning had been called out along w/ other international brands due to questionable ethical practices.

I find it very hard to believe that the timing of GG’s massive Li-Ning ad campaign, coinciding as it has with these Western brand boycotts, was a coincidence.

Let’s get this out of the way. Whether the boycott happened or not, Li-Ning is guaranteed an insane amount of sales because they hired Xiao Zhan. This is the same man who always sells out products in seconds. Who took KXZ to 200% growth and so on. I can talk about stats all day but this massive campaign for him is a no brainer. GG is expensive and a guaranteed success. Any brand who hires him will be stupid to not launch an all out campaign across all cities. Li-Ning knows what they are doing by hiring him. For years, they have been trying to appeal to Gen Z. Especially now that youth in CHN are more and more into the “guochao” (国潮) - National trend. Integrating traditional chinese culture and fashion w/ domestic brands. This ties in with the whole movement of erasing the connotation that made in china is of inferior quality. GG was a good choice. He appeals to the younger generation (19-25) and the working class ( 26 and up ) who buys goods. I would imagine even GG’s team did their research and knows this trend is going on too. This will not be the last you will see of this type of endorsement from him or Web. The rumors on this collaboration was going around as early as, March 15 I think? I was literally asking another bxg if GG’s ad will be pushed back a day or two because of what was happening. or what will this all implies. He was always gonna come out and endorse this brand boycott or not.

I am not removing the possibility that these local brands have a hand in the boycott. It’s a very valid concern. or that, it was a convenient perfect storm for them. A perfect storm of EU, US & CAN sanctioning CHN. The sudden attack on brands’ statements against Xinjiang cotton from a year ago. The whole agenda of controlling the people’s view on what is happening. All of these are connected. sure. There are many things behind the scenes that we will not know but we can make an educated guess of. Li-Ning is not the only domestic brand that had a positive push because of this.

On 3/25 Li-Ning’s stock closed with a high of 10.74% , plus an added 9% on the 26th when GG was announced as ambassador. The same thing happened with Anta and others.

I find it very hard to stomach seeing Li-Ning ads on my dash, regardless of GG’s presence in them. Without condemning him for taking this endorsement deal, and without judging what he is or is not personally aware

I will just be addressing GG’s alleged part in all this. I say that cause we don’t live in his brain and won’t know what he’s thinking. You can all try and project your values on him but he is a whole person of his own. I have hopefully given some view on why GG accepted to endorse this brand in the previous point. GG has spent most if not all, of his life in China. He has repeatedly said that he was brought up traditionally. Tho his father was very encouraging in him participating in the arts and widening his knowledge. He had Foreign professors at CBTU. He is part of the generation that knows what’s going on outside by using the internet. He’s smart. I would guess that he is aware of the country he is living in vs what it’s like outside of it. But at the end of the day, his loyalty will always be with his country. I hate to break it to you all but he will continue to live and thrive as an Actor even without international support. Tho it is great that he is a source of National Pride with how people outside of China love him.

Now, about his support for Xianjiang Cotton. I wanna start by showing this:

It’s a post from People’s Daily wb which boasts all the c-ent top stars that voiced their support of XJ cotton. The sense is, hey people look at your idols supporting the cause. Look at their Patriotism. What do you think will happen if GG was not on this list? Knowing that he is a top star in CHN. Knowing he was just in hot waters post 22*? Knowing that he is actively being endorsed in CCTV which is a National Channel. Are we still surprised that he posted that support? I was just honestly waiting for him to post if anything. I talked before about how C-ent celebrities are expected ( and actually it’s in their law ) to be more morally upright than the lay people. This is prime example of that.

Another one is this from CCTV Wb. I’m including this for you all to have an understanding of how this whole thing is being played out in CHN. This is the type of online narrative that is going around and I would think GG is seeing. The sentiment is,

“No matter what hardships, ups and downs and blows go through in our country, her people will always come from all directions and stand up to speak justice and do just things.”

It’s also showing all the hot searches that is related in support of XJ cotton and defending CHN’s innocence.

Also this video that was heavily circulated showing mechanized picking of cotton vs the allegations of manual.

This is the kind of narrative that is going around, as expected. I don’t really fault GG or condemn him for doing what is best for him. What is the best for an individual does not always mean it’s the best for all. In talks like this, I always try and put myself in their position. I mean, who the hell are these people trying to attack my country? the country that has provided for me. I wanna say I understand where they are coming from but understanding does not mean agreeing. I see these A LOT. ALOT ON WEIBO. The China vs. Everyone story. It’s the notion of, they are attacking us and we must protect the country. Also keep in mind that news is heavily regulated.

You know what type of news the CCP would love for them to get a hold of? The rising attacks on Asians in the US. Oh boy they would fuckin love that! Making America the big/bad asian-hating boogeyman in the eyes of their people yet again.

Okay, now we’re down to the final part of this. Why do I share the promo pics for Li-Ning. Where do i draw the line.

To me it’s simple. It had GG in it. I was waiting for this to come out, and tbh, would you all even know about this brand’s practices if the boycott didn’t happen? No. This is a bjyx blog where i share things about them. That includes ad, dramas, pictures and videos. I understand if people don’t feel comfortable w/ Li-Ning ads and others, so just don’t like those posts. Did I buy anything from the collection? No. Did I buy multiple copies Web’s single Youth in Times ( like i do with his other singles )? No. That’s where I draw the line in this. I know we’re all gonna be put on a tight spot again once Faith Makes Great comes out. Once I saw that leaked pic, Ooohhh! I just know. Also if BAH adds some propaganda about CHN’s war on drugs. I am just waiting. I am ready. I know what my values are. I will not allow other people to dictate who I am. I know what type of content I’m only gonna be sharing.

I see this very forceful air of asking bxgs to take a stand on this ( always bxg, never the other side. always us of course even if we are the minority) and it really puts me off. I read someone say that they will not say anything because they don’t owe strangers on the internet an explanation. Which is true. I have separate spaces that I share my views on world/local issues. Accounts that show my actual name and around people I know in real life. That’s what I choose to do for myself. I started this blog for myself and i still find it very bizarre that people follow this account. I am not some sort of KOL, let’s get that straight. This is just a blog where I talk about things if i want to and SCREAM about GG and Web too much. I will probably not answer any follow up questions on this cause i feel like I have addressed a good chunk of it.

Just know that whatever I post on here in support of GG and his projects does not equate to my entire political/moral stand regarding this event or any. It’s really good that we have conversations like this cause it’s an important one.

Genetics of Lucille Tracy

I’ve wanted to do a post about this for a while and I’m bored during my music lesson so here it is. I’ve always seen a variety of ideas of what Lucille Tracy looked like so I thought I’d use science to show what she most likely looked like.

This is a Punnett Square: people use if with genetics to see what their children will most likely look like. Here’s one for my parents: My mum has brown hair which is a dominant gene which means it’s more powerful than other hair colours so it’s represented by a big “B”. My dad has red hair with is THE MOST recessive hair colour gene you can have to it’s represented by a little “r”. 100% of genes my parents can make are “Br” which means all their children will have brown hair (as it’s dominant) but will carry the red hair gene which means they could pass it on to their own children (as it’s recessive).

Now, onto the Tracy’s: We can assume Jeff has brown hair as Asher mistakes Scott for him in SOS Part 1 and we’ll start with an example where Lucille also has brown hair but with Jeff and Lucy having one red and blond recessive gene each making their genes look like this:

Jeff = Br (brown, red)

Lucy = Bb (brown, blond) (little “b” means blond as it is also recessive to brown but dominant over red).

If we were to put that into a Punnett Square it would look like this:

This set of genes doesn’t work as while Jeff and Lucy could have brunette and blond children (good for Scott, Virgil, Gorgon and Alan) but they couldn’t have ginger children (poor John…). So we scrap that one and try again.

PS. Though, blond and red are both represented by little letters, blond is more dominant than red so “br” means a blond child with a recessive red gene.

Changing Lucille’s genes again, we’ll try giving her red hair as I’ve seen a bit of fan art with her with ginger hair so now their genes look like:

Jeff = Bb (brown, blond)

Lucille = rr (red, red)

(Lucille has to have 2 red recessive genes because if you have red hair you can ONLY have red hair genes a they’re so recessive and other hair colour gene would take over which means Jeff has the blond genes now).

They now have a 50% chance of having blond children and brunette children but still no red (John’s giving me the right run around) so it’s back to the drawing board again.

I’m now trying Lucille with blond hair and I’m making both Jeff and Lucille’s recessive gene red as the ONLY way red hair would show up in a child of theirs is if they could make the genes “rr” which – as Jeff has brown hair – could only show up in his recessive genes and has to be Lucille’s recessive gene as if it was her dominant gene as Lucy have red hair and no blond hair would show up in their gene pairs. So, now the setup is this:

Jeff = Br (brown, red)

Lucille = br (blond, red)

And finally, we have success! Jeff’s brunette genes mean they have a 50% chance of having a child with brown hair (also means Scott and Virgil may have either a blond or red recessive gene to possibly have a blond or ginger child), a 25% chance of a blond child (and Gordon and Alan DEFINITELY have a red recessive to maybe have a red-haired child) and 25% of having a red-haired child (100% red genes for John, not shocking).

(This also suggests that Lucille and Jeff’s parents have to have the red-haired gene too so they could have red hair or a recessive red gene).

We can also work this out for eye colour as well. Brown eyes are the most dominant eye colour, then it’s blue and green is the most recessive. Jeff definitely has blue eyes (kind of grey, but I’d still call them blue) so if blue is his dominant gene and we have the same issue with green eyes that we had with red hair (need “gg” to make green eyes making Jeff’s recessive gene green) we have to assume Lucille has either green eyes (which she can’t have as then none of their children would have brown eyes) or her recessive gene is green and dominant one is brown making a Punnett Square that looks like this:

So, 50% of Jeff and Lucille’s children have brown eyes (with the possibility of a green-eyed or blue-eyed kid maybe), 25% have blue eyes (with a green-eyed recessive gene) and 25% will have green eyes.

So now we know, Lucille Tracy must have blond hair and brown eyes, Jeff Tracy has brown hair and blue eyes and both of them have the recessive genes for red hair and green eyes. And, as a bonus point, John’s eye colour and hair colour has each had a 25% chance of coming out in him as has Alan’s hair and eye colour meaning Alan and John’s genetics have the exact same level of rarity, which I thought was quite interesting.

EXTRA:

As a bonus, I thought I’d also take a look at what each of the boys genes would look with Kayo’s as I know a lot of people ship her with them (I ship her with John and I know at least @gumnut-logic ships her with Virgil). Kayo’s eyes are green so here genes would be “gg” and working under the likelihood of both her parents having dark hair (as most Asian people do) her hair genes would most likely be “BB” so here’s what their children would look like:

For her hair, you could change out Kayo’s second recessive gene for any other hair colour which would give her a 25% chance of a blond or ginger child with Scott and Virgil (depending on their recessive gene) or 25% change of a blond child or 50% chance of a ginger child if she had a baby with John (I personally like the idea of her having a ginger kid with John so I give her a recessive red gene).

Final round-up of fan fic asks

I've gotten a few more interesting responses to the fan fic discussion so I'm going to round them all up here. This will be my final post on the topic until/unless there's a dramatic new development, or a particularly notable response I want to highlight. Thanks to everyone who brought their thoughts and experiences to the topic. I hope everyone at least feels heard.

The biggest piece of advice that I would like to offer is for everyone to focus on what they love rather than what they hate. If we all did that, the world would be a better place. Alongside that, I'd like to remind everyone to please support authors whose work you like. It's so important. Give them a kudos, give them a nice comment, recommend their work to others. You never know what kind of grief and harassment they are dealing with to bring you these great stories, and our support means a lot.

With regard to fandom and fan fic issue, my years of experience being part of very large fandoms has led me to believe that big accounts are v important in facilitating and enforcing the general consensus of the whole fandom. Unless there will be big accs who'll remind everyone of being respectful & just not being a dick over other's preferences, nothing will change.

This is also the reason why I think certain solo fandoms have adapted weird and twisted narratives as their general fandom story because no big acc has tried to police them & and say hey pls be rational. So, if you want to know why your/our fandom thinks like this in general, look at what big accs are tweeting/posting, look at what ideas & values they follow, look at their preferences or how strongly they react to certain situations. it's taxing and toxic for big accs given the nature of social media these days, but it's also the reality of system, the more followers/audience you have, the more influence you will have.

So to anyone reading this I hope we all practice more restraint and reflection before we post anything. Remember that words, no matter what medium you write it in, will always carry weight.

So true. It is easy - even for myself who spends a fair chunk of time answering people's asks - to forget that people can sometimes be impressionable and what we say can influence people whether that's our intent or not. I get used to thinking of myself as a regular guy just doing my own thing when sometimes my thoughts and words go well beyond where I initially posted them.

I think it's important for us to be careful what we say, and it's equally important to be careful what we take from what other people say. Especially when it comes to big claims. Always get a second, third, fourth opinion and don't be afraid to ask for clarification if something doesn't sit right or sounds confusing.

It's also important to reflect on how our words and actions might affect other people's experience of fandom, and err on the side of 'live and let live' wherever possible. It's great to have our own preferences and to champion them, but we should try to do so in a way that leaves space for other people and perspectives.

The more unique perspectives and the more friendly, open dialog there is, the healthier the community will be as a whole.

There's nothing wrong with encouraging and guiding growth in the particular areas we are interested in, as long as it doesn't step on, oppress or attack those who are peacefully enjoying something different.

i would like to clarify that most of these zsww/lsfy fans are not dynamic exclusive (in the sense that they are friendly and interact with all ggdd fans) they just prefer to "identify" themselves as zsww/lsfy fans (on twitter specifically) just to form a distinction from bjyx fans who mostly are dynamic exclusive (as in; they do not consume non-bjyx content, and straightup refuse to interact with non-bjyx fans, often blocking them). as a result, id say that the zsww/lsfy communiy is way more 3/?

mature and respectful (after all, they're mostly queer people talking about a queer ship) whereas many problems in this fandom, such as the homophobia, adamantly insisting on "drawing lines" between dynamics, stem from the bjyx exclusive fans, comprised of cishet females who "may not know better". so, it is of no surprise to me that they're resorting to these immature tactics of calling gg unsavory names, and organizing retaliatory events with controversial topics in an attempt to "purify". 4/4

I trust that you have arrived at that theory through your own experience and observation. I haven't personally spent much time immersed in this stuff so I can't claim to have any real insight or expertise. If you say that's your experience of it, then at the very least that's how you've seen things up to this point.

I just want to say that I think we should always be careful about making assumptions about people's age, gender/gender identity, etc.

There are plenty of good reasons to avoid doing that; because those assumptions could be very wrong, because those assumptions are often laced with ageism, sexism, etc., because those assumptions - even when correct - might not be an accurate basis for the conclusions we draw.

But the primary reason I recommend avoiding those type of assumptions is because anything that enables us to clump a group of people together in our minds like that will tend to make them easier to demonize and dehumanize. They are no longer individuals who are each responsible for their own unique perspectives, they are now 'the X group' who is known for 'A B C series of easily attackable ideas or behaviors'.

If we attribute undesirable traits and behaviors to a group of people we feel opposed to in some way, that makes us feel more righteous and justified in behaving unfairly toward them, dismissing their humanity and warring with them. It's just risky behavior to engage in, even when it's well-intentioned.

There might actually be some truth to what you're saying. It could very well be that most of these people are young, inexperienced, heteronormative, etc. but if that's the case then we should try to use those traits to better understand and empathize rather than to better dismiss and discredit.

Just my two cents on that.

It can be really frustrating dealing with what feels like other people attacking us, trying to oppress us, etc. - especially when there are more of them than there are of us. In my experience the best solutions to that sort of problem are generally the ones that focus on what we are doing and want to do rather than what they are doing that we don't want them to do.

As I am always preaching, we can't control what other people say, do or think. The only thing we have any control over is what we say, do and think (and how we respond to what they say, do and think).

I have found in my experience that the moment I step out of a conflict mindset and instead step into a problem-solving mindset, everything starts to come together. I feel better, my outlook is more positive, I can begin to see solutions and allies rather than problems and enemies, and most of all, I become more focused on what I am doing than what others are doing.

So I would recommend everyone who is invested in resolving these conflicts focus on that. "How can we best showcase and encourage the types of stories we enjoy?" instead of "How can we stop these other people from doing things we dislike?"

As for supporting without going to war, the simplest way has always been to just show appreciation for the creators, hype them up. Kudos are the easiest way on ao3 but comments in addition are great. This goes for all content—art, fics, vids..etc. Creators love to see and read how people react to their content. Thanks so much, Anon. I think this is excellent advice. And it's true that appreciation is great, but helping to expand the audience is also great. Recommending stories, pointing people to the pages/websites of artists we like (as opposed to reposting), sharing our own ideas and approaches, encouraging people to try new things... all of this helps build healthier communities.

And here's another one: WRITE! DRAW! CREATE!

I urge anyone with creative interests or talents to bring their voices to the community because we all can benefit from hearing from you.
