do you have any fic recs / favorite fics you’re willing to share with the class 🫶🏻
hi anon!! yes, of course!! i have a ton of fics i adore that i would love to share with you! actually, im a serial bookmarker on ao3 so if you want to check those out, definitely go take a look over there but for the sake of this ask and because i want to shout out works that i adore, here is a non-exhaustive list of gen and lawrusso fanfics i live for!
The Recidivists by @vimesbootstheory is a lawrusso fanfic set a few years before the show’s actual timeline and following daniel’s journey as he goes to prison for a twenty-month sentence. his cellmate happens to be a certain johnny lawrence. it is my absolute FAVORITE fic right now, i am so happy every time i get an update. the writing is phenomenal and daniel is sooo realistic in this, i love him so so much.
Fight Like a Man by @miyagi-hokarate is a gen fic exploring dutch’s character and the reading of him as a trans man. it’s beautifully written, it’s a really interesting take on the character and it’s a must read for me.
A Means, A Way, A Plan by an_sceal is a gen fic exploring johnny’s mental health after season three and before that, during his childhood, his teenage years and young adulthood. it’s absolutely heartbreaking and it made me cry three times reading it. you should however READ THE TAGS!! i like fics that sometimes talk about difficult or dark themes and i don’t want anyone to end up reading something that upsets them so read the tags before you read any of the fics i recommend!
ordinary things by @toothpuulp is a lawrusso fanfic that is a the piano teacher AU. yes, the piano teacher by michael haneke. if you’ve seen the piano teacher or if you’re familiar with haneke’s work you probably know what this fic is but if you aren’t i will just say that it’s a fic that explores daniel’s desires, his repression and his trauma. it’s a fic that i’ve become totally obsessed with in the past month and that i’ve reread five times. it’s violent and sensual and just so brilliant i cannot even express how insanely good it is. once again do definitely read the tags and also read the author’s note but goood, i love this fic. it will also make you feel things for daniel larusso that i can only compare to like, shrimp colors.
lost my head in san francisco by GoldStarGirl is a lawrusso fanfic where johnny and daniel both bring their students (aisha and miguel vs robby and sam) to a competition in san francisco but their plans end up getting a little messed up by an earthquake and daniel and johnny have to team up and actually act like adults. it’s funny, it’s sweet, the kids are great in this. just mwaaah.
Race to the Bottom by kbaxter is a lawrusso story about infidelity, babyyyyy!! these men are NOT working through their issues and they are making it everybody’s problem!! they’re emotionally STUNTED and they have to fuck it out! a great fic by a great author whose other fics i also adore!
last night i had a dream by shortcrust is a lawrusso slice of life fanfic that i love dearly. it’s super sweet, super funny and it makes my heart do funny things every time i read it.
gravestone flowers by menocchio is a lawrusso fanfic that is actually the sequel to another GREAT fanfic called bootstrapping. gravestone flowers is my favorite of menocchio’s objectively amazing lawrusso fanfics because they are DIVORCED AS FUCK!!! it’s basically a retelling of season one if johnny and daniel had dated for a long time before and then had the world’s messiest break up. i love this fic to death. you can read it as a standalone but i definitely recommend bootstrapping as well.
Boxed series by ezlebe is a lawrusso fanfic where johnny used to do porn modelling when he was young and the kids find out… through daniel’s hidden stash of magazines. it’s funny! it’s hot! johnny is a wet dream! daniel has conflicting feelings! wonderful fic!
if anyone wants to recommend me their favorite fics, you’re definitely welcome to and don’t think that im not open to other things than lawrusso just because i have a one track mind, feel free to send me all of your recs! also!! if you’re a fanfic writer come recommend me your stuff!!!!
thank you for this ask and happy reading!

the people defending saint/dead-dyke via “it’s just a harmless kink/that’s his private sex life/he doesn’t REALLY feel that way about lesbians” are unhinged. It’s not hard to grasp that having kinks related to a marginalized group you aren’t apart of is fetishistic. He’s also been violently antiblack, used an anti indigenous slur despite not being native, and was found to have an incestuous atla side blog that focused on zuko raping azula. you should not be defending this man or his supporters!
Honey, if you think the fetish shit that got forcibly outed from his locked, private smut blog to smear his name (you know, totally thrusting kink shit into the faces of people who neither asked for it and some of which are likely underage) is anywhere near the level of some of the smut I write for $$$, well I got some news for you.
I went and looked at the callout post just to make sure I've got my cards right and will be explicitly telling you why I don't give a shit below this readmore. You know, to keep people who don't want to read this the option not to. Because I'm going to be explicit, at least about myself.
Oh and thank you, dear, because I've been itching to dissect why exactly this is bullshit from an actual adult's perspective.
It’s not hard to grasp that having kinks related to a marginalized group you aren’t apart of is fetishistic. First, I feel the need to remind you that this shit was password protected. Secondly, all the interactions there were completely consensual and some didn't even originate from Saint. Third, this shit was password protected. All this shit? Wasn't out there for the public eye. And guess what? Saint is trans. He's "part" of this community whether you like it or not.
Oh, right, he's not the correct sort of trans to have fetishes over corrective rape and misgendering, at least the type that was leaked from his password fucking protected blog. Whilst I am not familiar with Saint's history or what he's put out there for the public to know -- you know, not hidden behind a password like his kink stuff was -- I have a feeling his story is like many trans men's. He thought he was a girl for awhile, maybe he had some traumatic sexual experiences, maybe he ID as a lesbian before finally figuring out wtf he was.
You can't take away a person's history no matter how much or how little they desire to share with you. Also you're greatly ignoring the vast amount of fetishes out there that people do genuinely have. Do you know how many women have rape fantasies? About 62%, with many having a rape fantasy as much as once a week.
Me, myself, my introduction to reading porn was through corrective rape fantasies. Slap me in handcuffs now officer! Clearly the fact I have fantasies about corrective rape towards a myriad of different sorts of people means that I believe this shit and it affects how I feel about those same groups irl.
He’s also been violently antiblack Proof?
used an anti indigenous slur despite not being native I'll take this seriously when people start doing mass callouts for omegaverse consumers in general and it's not explicitly towards a trans man and it's getting lumped in with a lot of other bullshit points.
Like maybe he was a little defensive, but I have no idea when he was told ABO was a slur, so if it was after shit started getting leaked, then I don't blame him for being prickly. And there's plenty of cis people who make and consume omegaverse that haven't been talked to soooooo
found to have an incestuous atla side blog that focused on zuko raping azula I mean, the blog was called jeeko, for fuck's sake. I don't think the focus was a reblog of someone else's fantasy, yanno? Also, they're fictional characters. I've seen much worse.
You're just bringing the purity police out of my 14 year old's promise ring concert into fandom spaces and that's fucking weird m'dude. Like, do you realize that? I've watched the internet go from a place where I could consume whatever the fuck I wanted, so long as I understood how to get through the gates, to people posting MLP porn so much that an internet wide cleanup had to be initiated to put it behind the gates again. And instead of people realizing that the gates are good, cause it protects kids and makes it harder for teens to just stumble across the stuff, this kept escalating to today, where it's wrong to admit that you have ships that don't fit perfectly into a "safe" narrative.
You're basically Google. You're censoring everything to make it as vanilla and palatable as possible because you don't think that people can handle thinking critically about what they consume to the point you're erasing queer experiences and history. You're those old school news channels 15-20 years ago decrying video games making people more violent and completely ignoring the truth. You're, in short, an idiot.
I do believe kinks, fetishes, etc should be behind closed walls. Passwords, tags, things that make it easy for people to block and/or ignore. I also don't think it's okay to force kink into someone's face or to make them part of your fetish. Which is why I'm telling you and anyone else who got this far (and those who haven't really):
I get off on anon hate. Your anger makes my T-Dick hard and this bussy wet. Please, kinkshame me all you want. Your humiliation is my fetish and spite is why I'm still alive. The more stupidity you feed me, the stronger I get.
And when the stupidity stops, I'll just talk about how trans men have unique struggles in the world and maybe the lateral aggression will stop long enough for people to listen about why it's not okay for trans femme people to go into trans masc DM's and ask for their body parts.

this was written several weeks ago in response to asks i was receiving i am posting it now it is very long the longest i have ever made and it is not very well edited but here it is in this final essay i talk about how shitty rae is about black people in her writing as well as just me talking about how her writing sucks in general lets begin
hello everyone
as you may know i have received a lot of anons in the last week or so about issues of racism in the beetlejuice community both just generally speaking and also within specific spaces
i was very frustrated to not be getting the answers i wanted because i typically do not talk about what i do not see but in an effort to be better about discourse i went looking through discourse from before my time in the fandom and i also received some receipts and information from my followers and from some friends
keep in mind that the voices and thoughts of bipoc are not only incredibly important at all times but in this circumstance it is important that if a bipoc has something to add you listen and learn and be better
i admit that when this happened i wasnt aware of the extent of what occurred and im angry at myself for not doing more at that time and i want to work harder to make sure something like this doesnt go unnoticed again
im a hesitant to talk about months old discourse because i have been criticized for bringing up quote old new unquote but this is very important and i am willing to face whatever comes from to me
lets talk about this
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
content from our local racist idiot that may be months old but its important
putting my thoughts under a cut to spare the dash but before i begin obviously this is awful
lets fucking unpack this folks
right out the gate op states that she supports artistic freedom but then within a couple words she goes against that statement
being entirely canon compliant isnt artistic freedom and even so if this person has so much respect for canon they wouldnt be out here erasing lydias obvious disgust for beetlejuice in the movie or ignoring lydias age for the sake of shipping that shit isnt canon either
also we love the quick jab at the musical there hilarious we love it dont we because god forbid a licensed and successful branch on a media have any standing in this conversation but whatever
now lets scroll down and talk about the term racebending
the term racebending was coined around 2009 in response to the avatar the last airbender movie a film in which the east asian races of the characters were erased by casting white actors in the three leading roles of aang sokka and katara
whenever the term racebending is used in a negative light it is almost always a case of whitewashing like casting scarlett johansen in ghost in the shell or the casting of white actors of the prince of persia sands of time instead of iranian ones
this kind of racebending erases minorities from beeing seen in media and is wrong
all that being said however racebending has also been noted to have very positive after effects like the 1997 adaptation of cinderella or casting samuel jackson as nick fury in the marvel movies nick fury was originally a white guy can you even imagine
i read this piece from an academic that said quote writers can change the race and cultural specificity of central characters or pull a secondary character of color from the margins transforming them into the central protagonist unquote
racebending like the kind that rae is so heated about is the kind of creative freedom that leads to more representation of bipoc in media which will never be a bad thing ever no matter how pissy you get about it
designing a version of a character as a poc isnt serving to make them necessarily better it serves to give new perspective and perhaps the opportunity to connect even more deeply with a character it doesnt marginalize or erase white people it can uplift poc and if you think uplifting poc is wrong because it tears down white people or whatever youre a fucking moron and you need to get out of your podunk white folk town and see the real world
the numbers of times a bipoc particularly a bipoc that is also lgbt+ has been represented in media are dwarfed by what i as a white dude have seen myself represented in media is and that isnt okay that isnt equality and its something that should change not only in mainstream media but in fandom spaces as well
lets move down a bit further to the part about bullying straight people which is hilarious and lets also talk about the term fetishistic as well lets start with that
this person literally writes explicit pornography of a minor and an adult are we really going to let someone like that dictate what is and what isnt fetishistic
similarly to doing a positive racebend situation people may project lgbt+ headcanons on a character because its part of who they are and it helps them feel closer to the character and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that
depicting lgbt+ subject matter on existing characters isnt an inherently fetishistic action generally things only really become fetishistic when the media is being crafted and hyped by people who are outside of lgbt+ community for example how young teens used to flip a tit about yaoi or how chasers fetishize trans people
but drawing a character with top surgery scars or headcanoning them as trans is harmless and its just another way to interpret a character literally anone could be trans unless if their character bio says theyre cis and most of them dont go that deep so it really is open to interpretation and on the whole most creators encourage this sort of exploration because it is a good thing to get healthy representation out in the world
as for it being used to bully straights thats just funny i dont have anything else on that like if youre straight and you feel threatened and bullied because of someone headcanoning someone as anything that isnt cishet youre a fucking idiot and a weak baby idiot at that like the real world must fucking suck for you because lgbt+ people are everywhere and statistically a big chunk of your favorite characters arent cishet sorry be mad about it
lets roll down a bit further about the big meat of the issue which was when several artists were drawing interpretations of lydia as a black girl which i loved but clearly this person didnt love it because they have a very narrow and very racist and problematic view of what it means to be a black person
and before i move forward i must reiderate that i am a white person and you should listen to the thoughts of poc people like @fright-of-their-lives or @gender-chaotic it is not my place to explain what the black experience is like and it certainly isnt this persons either
implying that the story of a black person isnt worth telling unless if the character faces struggles like racism and prejudice is downright moronic
why use the word kissable to describe a black persons lips now thats what i call fetishistic and its to another extreme if youre talking about a black version of lydia on top of that
the author of this post says herself that shes white so clearly shes the person whos an authority on the black experience and what it means to be a black person right am i reading that right or am i having a fucking conniption
how about allowing black characters to exist without having to struggle why cant a black version of lydia just be a goth teenager with a ghost problem who likes photography and is also black like she doesnt have to move to a hick town and get abused by racist folks she doesnt have to go through any more shit than she already goes through and if you honestly think thats the only way to tell a black persons story you need to get your brain cleaned
you know nothing about the complexities about being a black person and i dont either but you know wh odo black people who are doing black versions of canon characters they fucking know
lets squiggle down just a bit further
so the writer has issues with giving characters traits like a broad nose or larger lips if theyre a woman but if theyre a man suddenly its totally okay to go all ryan murphy ahs coven papa legba appropriation when approaching character design like are you fucking stupid do you hear yourself is that really how you see black men like what the fuck is wrong with you
none of the shit youre spewing takes bravery it takes ignorance and supreme levels of stupidity
do you really think you with your fic where a black lgbt+ woman is tortured and abused where you use the n word with a hard r to refer to her like that shits not okay its fucking depraved and yeah we know you love being shitty but like christ on a bike thats so much
can we also talk about this
Tumblr media
what the fuck is this fetishistic bull roar garbage calling this black character beyonce dressing her up in quote fuck me heels unquote are you are you seriously gonna write this and say its a shining example of how to write a black character youre basically saying ope here she is shes a sex icon haha im so progressive and i clealry understand the black experience hahahaha fuck you oh my god
on top of that theres a point where this character is only referred to as curly hair or the fact that the n word is used in the fic with the hard r like thats hands down not okay for you to use especially not in a manner like this jesus christ
oop heres a little more a sampling for you of the hell i am enduring in reading this drivel
Tumblr media
oh boy lets put a leash on the angry black woman character lets put her in a leash and have the man imply hes a master like are you kidding me are you for real and what the fuck is with calling her shit like j lo and beyonce do you actually think thats clever at all are you just thinking of any poc that comes into your head for this
also lydia fucking tells this girl that she shouldnt have lost her temper like she got fucking leashed im so tired why is this writing so problematic and also so bad
hold up before i lose my head lets look at some of her own comments on the matter of this character and what happens to her
Tumblr media
hi hello youre just casually tossing the word lynch out there in the wide open world as if thats not a problem that is still real like are you fucking unhinged there have been multiple cases of this exact thing happening in our firepit of a country in the last five months alone like how can you still have shit like this up for people to read how can you be proud of work like this in this climate
and also what the fuck is that last bit
what the actual fuck
i dont speak for black people as a white person but you do!? im sorry i had to get my punctuation out for that because wow thats fucking asinine just because one black person read your fic and didnt find the torture and abuse of your one black character abhorrant doesnt mean that the vast majority of people not only in the fandom but in the human population with decency are going to think its okay because its not
i started this post hoping to be level headed and professional but jesus fucking christ this woman is something else white nationalism is alive and well folks and its name is rae
if you defend this woman you defend some truly abhorrant raecism
editors notes
in order to get some perspective on these issues more fully some of the writing by the author was examined and on the whole it was pretty unreadable but i want to just call back to the very beginning of this essay where the person in question talked about holding canon in high regard but then in their writing they just go around giving people magic and shit and ignoring the end of the movie entirely like are you canon compliant or nah
the writing doesnt even read like beetlejuice fanfic it reads as self indulgent fiction you could easily change the names and its just a bad fanfic from 2007
also can we talk about writing the lesbian character as an angry man hater like its 2020 dude and als olets touch on that girl on girl pandering while beetlejuice is just there like here we go fetishizing again wee
i cant find a way to work this into this already massive post but
Tumblr media
im going to throw up
okay so thats a lot we have covered a lot today and im sure my ask box will regret it but this definitely should have been more picked apart when it happened
please feel free to add more to this i would love more perspectives than just my own.

Lately a few pieces have clicked for me about lesbians who hate the word "queer". Outside Tumblr, the lesbians of my acquaintance would all call themselves queer without hesitation, and consider themselves part of the greater queer community. So what the heck, I've always wondered, is with the insistence that "queer is a slur against lesbians"?
Then a friend shared this an article by leading TERF Julie Bindel with me, about her belief in political lesbianism, the radical feminist equivalent to MGTOW. Political lesbianism is a movement that started in the 1960s and says that regardless of a woman's own desires or preferences, she should forswear all social contact with men and only pursue relationships with other women.
Bindel writes about her experience in the 80s:
[Radical Feminists] told me that, to them, lesbianism was a choice that women could make, and not a "condition" we are born with. "All women can be lesbians" was the mantra. I loved the sense that I had chosen my sexuality and rather than being ashamed or apologetic about it, as many women were, I could be proud, and see it as a privilege.
Political lesbianism was actually constructed as the opposite of a sexual orientation. It was the idea that you could and should overcome your sexual orientation and only date the gender the system told you was acceptable. Men were the source of all badness; if you removed them, only goodness was left.
So a lot of the big old "Lesbian" organizations, writers, and scholars thought of themselves as fundamentally different from "those sex freaks" in the LGBTQ+ community. Their "lesbianism" wasn't about finding out they loved and desired women, but about subordinating their desire to a moral and political ideology.
So when a lot of young lesbians today want to learn about what lesbianism is and means, they find political lesbians and assume "okay yep, this is my stop," and get told a bunch of stuff about how ✨special✨ and ✨unproblematic✨ lesbianism is, and how lesbianism is unique compared to any other LGBTQ+ group or culture, and they get really into it, because being special is awesome! Of course lesbians need to create their own spaces and culture! It all makes so much sense! Sounds great!
But it's fruit of the poisoned tree, and leads young lesbians into believing really toxic things, like, "The political correctness and optics of a relationship/identity matter more than whether you, personally, feel like you want to be in it" or "Women are special and can't ever abuse other women, wlw relationships can't be harmful or damaging," or "People who enjoy different types of sex THINK they're freely consenting to do it, but they're all wrong and misinformed, and for their own good, you need to ignore everything they say and create social and legal barriers to limit their sex lives," and "Trans people are bad, wrong, and altogether shouldn't exist."
Because inside the mindset of political lesbianism, those all make sense—you can't make personal decisions about your life and identity based on ✨feelings✨; the only winning move is to transcend those petty concerns and do what the ideology says.
Which is really at odds with queer lesbianism, lesbianism based on the idea that in a world where you can freely choose or refuse to have sex, you and as many consenting adult partners as you like can do whatever the fuck you want sexually, and some women, given that freedom, are only ever going to want other women, and that everybody benefits from receiving that same sexual freedom.
I don't think any of the 18-to-22-year-old lesbians who tell me to keep my bisexual female little hands off "lesbian culture" are consciously aware that they've been indoctrinated by a group that actually wants to end all sexual freedom as we know it, much less in agreement with it. So I'm not blaming everyone who says "Uh, actually, queer is a slur." The arguments have been thoroughly masked and reframed for a new generation. But on the other hand, those young lesbians need to know what its logical endpoint is, for their sake and everyone else's.

this is a point i havent seen made before but ive had on my mind. i feel like theres an argument to be made that seeing trans fetish porn in fandom, esepcially that of minors, when youre a trans minor can be validating and results in adults taking advantage of that. i can only speak for myself but for the longest time the only place i didnt see trans people treated like shit was in fandom. (1/4)
admittedly trans people were still greatly fetishized but its better than nothing was how i felt. i liked seeing trans headcanons but the majority of time i would see them was in porn, more specifically stridercest porn that usually blatantly fetishized trans people and gay men too. i often replicated what i saw in porn because i was told it was normal and this contributed to csa and retraumatization.(2/4)
i feel like the porn i saw specifically being trans fetish porn contributed because "this is a character like you, this is normal, this is how cis people want to see you, this is how you get validation" was my thought process and adults encouraged that. its also worth pointing out that nearly every trans person i know was also hurt by fandom and the vast majority of antis i know are trans.(3/4)
i feel like this is a bit rambly, way too long, and not making a lot of sense but what im getting at here and my main idea is the way fandom loves cp and incest combined with how it fetishizes trans people makes for an especially toxic and dangerous environment for trans kids who are very vulnerable to begin with and i think it needs to be talked about more.(4/4)
I totally agree!! And yeah, when you’re a closeted trans teenager with no support systems in real-life, the fetishization of trans people (by fandom, or the internet as a whole) is at least some positive reassurance that you exist and there’s others like you. It’s also true that adults / pedophiles online seek out targets to latch onto and “befriend” for the sake of taking advantage of them being transgender, interested in their fandoms, or willing to discuss with and/or create fetish material for them.
I’ve also heard that a lot of trans people first find out they’re transgender from porn! Specifically, in the late 2000′s internet’s age of easy access to porn, many kids’ first introduction into transgender identities starts with stumbling onto seeing “traps.” Those are horrible, violently misrepresented depictions of trans women, but it’s true that for many trans women that they could only see themselves represented in fetish material for years, growing up.
And now that I think about it, for basically any LGBT person, it’s been kind of a common tradition to first find out that you can be non gender-conforming or be into the opposite sex by accidentally discovering it through porn? In real-life people will be outwardly disgusted by gay, trans, bi people, etc. etc., but in closed-doors cishets fetishize us and are willing to acknowledge we exist on the anonymity of the internet... That sucks, and I wish we had (and have) more positive representations of us in popular media, but there’s not much we could do.
AND YEAH!!!! Stridercest was the biggest source of trans Dave that I can remember, and I think futa!Porrim and Kanaya were the most common “dick-girl” headcanons for the female characters. And holy shit yeah, Stridercests fetishized being gay and conflated that with being interested in your brother/father, and so many fujoshis and fujoshi-supporting gay men drew tons of Stridercest... It was fucking everywhere, and I think as a gay man I was basically forced to like it? Because it was so widely accepted and like John’s “I’m not gay!!” shtick turned me off, but Dirk being gay and in love with his brother was something that validated me as a gay man, and I’m feeling sick thinking about it, but that was the truth when I was like. Goddamn. Thirteen, fourteen, early fifteen years old. I’m so, ugh. And like as a horny gay teen there was a surplus of Stridercest porn compared to any other pairing, so even though DaveJohn was also my first and favorite ship, I’d consume five to ten times as much Stridercest, just because it was so normalized and available.
And I absolutely concur that most antis are trans / gay / ex-fujoshis or ex-shippers that were hurt by fandom and preyed on / manipulated for years to believe that incest/abuse/trans/shota/loli fetishizes were okay. I tried writing a Stridercest fanfic that I showed to my thirty-year old friend on dA (who often would draw me in sexualized poses & would Skype with me all the time to where I was afraid to log onto Skype because he’d always begin talking to me and so I just deleted Skype and left my friends on it) when I was fourteen and like. At the time I was like, this is perfectly normal and okay! Teehee! I was so. I could’ve been taken advantage of so fucking easily and I’m so lucky that I wasn’t, because god, I was in that vulnerable mindset and had my own shota blogs that adults would follow and try to talk to me on, and just. Yikes. Yikes. Yikes!!!

laz and solene pls
THANKS FOR MY LIFE AVERY
Lazare
Sexuality Headcanon: GAY GAY GAY. I mean, the man has a RAINBOW across his crotch at one point. (Now, you could argue that it was a trick of the lighting, but come on. We know the truth.) Possibly with a side of demi, since I really don’t think that he really has any interest in sex until Ronan comes into his life, despite having a longtime (unfortunate and unrequited) crush on Artois and I genuinely can’t see him, say, going to a brothel or even having an affair with another officer or a soldier. I just think the man, with one, single exception, is more or less completely married to his job, and given the emphasis in army training on avoiding libertinism, the idea that “vices” weren’t inherent and could be stomped out, and my own headcanons as far as his family history...it ain’t gonna happen no matter what. Like, there are probably ongoing challenges in court as to who can successfully get the D, with no one being successful. (This has led to a number of young ladies swarming him at any given function in the hopes that they’ll be the one to melt his brooding heart.) In some AUs, like the Polyam AU, he’s obviously bi, but that’s the odd one out on multiple levels and is one of the few I’d really put into its own continuity (Come on, it acknowledges R/O, for God’s sake.) Asexual homoromantic Laz is also Very Important to me, with him trying to deal with everything because Ronan unleashes SQUISHY FEELINGS in him but he still doesn’t feel any sexual attraction towards him, though he’s not 100% opposed to sex in principle, and Ronan taking it personally because it’s Ronan and, in all fairness, it’s not like they have pamphlets on asexuality in the 18th century, though eventually they decide to navigate it in a way that makes them both happy.
Gender Headcanon: Generally, I write him as more or less cis, but trans Laz has a very, very special place in my heart since it puts his need to conform to society in an entirely different light. Like, it could be a Lady Oscar-esque situation where he’s an only child and Mama Peyrol and Papa de Peyrol (mainly Mama de Peyrol because *someone* is probably either in a brothel or on campaign WHOOPS) get worried and just...straight up raise him as a guy from the time he’s about 4-5 years old and he’s okay with it because, well, he is a guy and he’s happy that they finally notice that (and since boys habitually wore dresses until about the age of 7 when they had their breeching, this wouldn’t even be a Major Deal and they could probably come up with some bullshit reason for why they’d had a daughter baptized but now have a healthy son. Or if not, they just, like, bribe the local priest. Because they’re aristocrats and can afford to do shit like that). Then Papa de Peyrol dies, Grandpapa de Fuck comes into play, and it becomes more of a Thing, with always Upholding the De Peyrol Name and Fulfilling His Duty becoming the focus rather than, idk, raising a well-adjusted kid. Like, he gets some points for not misgendering him, but on every other level? Dude’s still an asshole. Because he’s Grandpapa de Fuck.
Laz is taught that he has to be the best grandson and heir that he can be, that no one can ever have a suspicion about him, which also becomes a bit of a strain as the pressure to marry looms in the future and Grandpapa de Fuck dies without even being useful. (Typical). And so Laz tries very, very hard to conform, to not so much as bend a single rule, to be the perfect military man. He gets this reputation for being standoffish from the time he’s a young officer, about the age of 14, never really interacting with the other men, even changing his clothes in secret, always sleeping on his own when he has the opportunity to, and, despite the other officer’s best efforts, never going into a brothel or having an affair no matter how many bets they make among themselves. Until one day some reckless peasant boy charges into his life and Laz really, really tries to fight it because this could ruin EVERYTHING but. It’s Ronan. Ronan’s persistent. And also an oblivious toenail so it takes a little while to get it through his head that, no, Laz is still a man and Ronan’s STILL gay AF. (Sorry, Ronan, you can’t no-homo your way out of this one. Full homo. All the homo.)
A ship I have with said character: R/L is pretty much my be all, end all for Laz, though I also can and do ship O/L and R/O/L.
A BROTP I have with said character: Poor Laz in canon doesn’t really have any friends that we see, unless you count the one time he and Artois conspire. (I don’t.) Even though I tend to have his troops shipping Laz/Ronan, that’s out of selfishness as much as anything else (if he’s getting laid, he might not be so snappish.) In the Abomination (which...obviously doesn’t go with the whole “Peyrol wanting to fire on him”...thing from the Zuka version), I like the dynamic between Laz and Papa du Puget, where you have the latter really helping him out in terms of figuring out where he is in terms of his relationship with Ronan and getting his sense of individuality back. Like, it shouldn’t require a neon sign to say “Hey, maybe not having anything to do with your boyfriend except for when you have sex might be part of the reason why he’s not speaking to you right now, maybe cuddle with him?” but Laz is new to this, doesn’t exactly have a roadmap, and thinks that his relationship with Ronan can be neatly packaged into his schedule. Which...surprise, it can’t be. Since du Puget is also very much a man of the Enlightenment with a HUGE library to match it (really, we know this, because when the Bastille fell he demanded compensation for it), if anyone can help Laz get grounded again, it’s him. And, since Laz is about 24-ish in the Abomination, he’s the perfect age to be Du Puget’s son (with Olympe being about 19), which adds an extra dimension as du Puget (my very, very specific version of him modeled after the historical figure) really mirrors Laz’s father in a lot of ways, from his friendship with de Sade (who Laz *loathes*) to his military career and his habit of occasionally having affairs. (Which is pretty shitty, but not unexpected given the times.) The difference is, du Puget really does get the opportunity to do what Papa de Peyrol never could: Do his best to protect Lazare from Grandpapa de Fuck’s influence, even if the damage has already been mostly done, as well as ultimately give up his career and his post for his family. (For what it’s worth, I tend to headcanon Papa de Peyrol as a wannabe Validad who was just...flawed in his implementation of it. Like, my take on him is this guy who would always bring back his son toys and souvenirs from his campaign, tell him stories when he tucked him into bed, etc., but whose own weaknesses ultimately still led to his death and his widow being left absolutely destitute to the point where she had to make a deal with Grandpapa de Fuck. Because it’s the 18th century and life’s a bitch, especially if you’re a widow with weakened financial prospects and a young child and your father in law is convinced your kid is his second chance from God.)
A NOTP I have with said character: Generally, I’d say Artois/Laz in anything that’s not set pre-canon given that, for all it could be interesting in a fucked up way, there’s no way it’ll end up well for Laz, but I have also seen Danton/Laz and it scarred me deeply. Salieri/Laz is something I’ve also seen a bit, which I don’t *get* because any time they would have met it’d be like: *gay staring*
*gay staring*
*gay panic*
*gay panic*
And then both of them rushing over to their extroverted boyfriends. If anything, I could only really see the two of them bonding over having absolutely ridiculous boyfriends (and, if it gets to postcanon for both, bonding over WHOOPS I ACCIDENTALLY KILLED MY BOYFRIEND).
A random headcanon: Oh God, pretty much everything I have on him is a headcanon. Like, even the things I take for granted on him (like Sugardaddy!Laz) are headcanons. The man is one massive, walking headcanon because no one in the writer’s room wanted to sit down and work on their contract cop-out; they were just like “fuck, let him keep Maniaque. And give him this new song. And a bit in the opening, where he demonstrates the beginning of his homoerotic tension lifelong hatred with the lead. That’s good, right?”
Laz always liked music growing up; he liked how steady the beats were, he liked the smooth texture of the harpsichord keys, he liked his mother sometimes sitting him on her knee and gently moving his fingers over the right keys, he liked the way he could channel himself into the music. Communication was hard, mired in social niceties that he didn’t always understand, things that the adults treated like they were life and death, but music was simple. Hitting the key one place produced one sound, hitting it in another produced another, every time. When his father was at home, he would sit in the drawing room and listen to the two of them play, applauding at the right moments and praising Lazare enthusiastically. This was the first time young Lazare tasted success and praise, and he basked in it. By the time his father died, when was about seven or eight, he was quite good at it in his own right.
Obviously, since this was a bright, happy period in Lazare’s life, guess what Grandpapa de Fuck did? Yep, it went out the window. A man, Grandpapa de Fuck believed, could only ever be talented at one thing, barring some few geniuses (with his grandson not being among them), and Lazare was going to be a soldier. Everything else was going to go. As with most things relating to his childhood that his grandfather robbed him of, he chose to convince himself that it had been a childish indulgence. He still felt the music, though, in the steady rhythm of soldier’s boots and the beat of the regimental drum, but he could only direct it now, never play it for himself. Once, when he was a young officer being used by enthralled with the Comte d’Artois, the latter took him to a performance of an opera, chastising him when he noticed the way Lazare’s hands moved throughout the performance. Lazare buried it even further, not even talking about it when it could be avoided, much less consuming it.
Then, Ronan comes into his life. And Ronan’s not a music critic; the most he knows are the peasant songs they played at festivals or sang as together in the winter months when things looked bleak and they had little else to do. He probably doesn’t know the difference between a harpsichord and a piano, just that they’re Rich People’s Instruments. But, despite everything else, despite the hard time he gives Peyrol for it at first, he ends up egging him into taking classes again because, Hell, it’s something besides homicide that makes Laz happy and, for all of their differences as a couple, Ronan wants him to be happy. And it’s frustrating, because he should know how to do this; for so long everything in his life has been something that he already knew and could predict and, with this, he can hear his failure. There are many times that he takes his anger out on the keys or scatters the sheet music around. But, over time, he feels himself improving, the keys start to become old friends to him, and, gradually, he starts to play again. And it’s not like it was when he was a child, there is no audience eager to praise him, but, sometimes during a late practice session, Ronan will come over from behind (with some amount of warning, since approaching the experienced army officer from behind tends to have unforeseen consequences), drowsily nuzzle into Laz’s neck, and it’s just as good. (Also, he probably reaches around to play a few notes of “Ah, Ca Ira” or “La Marseillaise” while Laz is briefly distracted because Ronan Mazurier is, first and foremost, a little shit). (Also, they totally bang on the harpsichord at one point.)
General Opinion over said character: MY SON. My useless, emotionally repressed, gay, homicidal, aristocratic son who needs to have some sense knocked in his head but is trying his best and is quite possibly the only officer in Paris who is actually doing his job. Deserves more screentime and/or cuddles from his boyfriend who is STILL ALIVE, thank you very much, if and when he gets into the position when he’ll accept them. I wish he got something resembling character development or an arc, but HE’S MINE NOW. (And, tbh, I’m a little worried that it’ll be a monkey’s paw type situation with him getting more time. Like, I’m fully prepared to sell my soul to the Toho production, but I’m also preparing myself to see a much darker take on my son than I’m used to. Including when it comes to Ronan. And that might be a bitter pill to swallow.) Even though I love all my sons equally, I prefer the opportunity for nuance that original!Laz afffords (and the amount of Done he seems to be most of the time), as the other two lean a little more towards sadistic (though sex dungeon Laz is too good for me to pass up entirely). Also, I still hold Toho!Laz as an ideal faceclaim for Grandpapa de Fuck.
Someone please save him. I would, but I’m too busy tossing him into the Seine atm.
Solene
Sexuality Headcanon: Solene’s sexuality has always been tricky for me because bisexual Solene is very near and dear to my heart (ONE OF US, ONE OF US), but I could also make an argument for lesbian Solene who separates her working life from her private life. In another universe, she very likely would have ended up with a man no matter what, I’m not sure if she’d have been entirely content, but she probably wouldn’t have questioned it so long as she was decently secure and well-cared for, like most WLW throughout history probably did. Even in canon, I could see her taking up with a man (like in the Zuka and Toho versions where she and Danton have a longer term “relationship”), because it’s a means of security + stability so long as he’s not some abusive assfuck who thinks that he owns her, but as far as actual trust and companionship are concerned? I can only really see it with women, which makes sense when you consider how closely tied Solene really is to women, especially in the French and Toho versions where she’s got “Je Veux le Monde” which is literally her belting out about how awesome women are and how men (specifically Ronan) are too blinded by their own ambition and bloodlust + the fact that we always see her surrounded by the other women, during La Nuit M’Appelle, Je Veux le Monde, and Fixe.
Gender Headcanon: She’s most likely a cis woman. Je Veux le Monde has a great emphasis on childbirth, etc. associated with that, though I could also roll with a significant portion of that being her taking power in her own terms, using the only language she knows, like she also seems to be doing in La Nuit, while still perhaps being a little unhappy with the way gender identity is dealt with in 18th century French society.
A ship I have with said character: Solene/Olympe. Like...was there any doubt?
“Oh, I think Peyronan’s my OTP and I can’t wait to work on all my fanfiction for them!” *Accidentally writes Solympe fic after Solympe fic*
“How did THAT happen?”
I mean, it does help that they aren’t at each other’s throats for the early part of their relationship, unlike SOME PEOPLE.
In all honesty, given how little Solene actually gets to do, there’s really not all that much room for shipping, save with the women around her and Lucille in the Zuka version. Which is an option, definitely, given that they “become friends” BUT.
A BROTP I have with said character: Despite headcanoning Solene as one of a VERY small number of people who can genuinely scare Laz, I do like to imagine the two of them bonding over Ronan’s more ridiculous moments. Like, at first she’s pissed as HELL at him for obvious reasons, but it also becomes a matter of “What did he do this time?” “He told me that my chess set was royalist propaganda. Then he jumped out the window. I have yet to try to retrieve him” “*Sigh* Let me talk to him.” And, in the Abominationverse, with the advent of the twins, Uncle Lazare is the nearest thing they have to a responsible adult when Solene and Olympe want to have a date night and Olympe’s parents are otherwise occupied, and since the children are already strangely drawn to him, well...there are worse babysitters, especially during the period of time when Ronan is off playing Hero of the Revolution and the twins are the only thing Laz really has to keep his mind off of him.
A NOTP I have with said character: Solene/Danton as a ship somewhat creeps me out, given that (1) He still has the ability to throw her out on the street with nothing and (2) ...Historically, we know how this one’s going to work out. Danton’s married, eventually he’s going to marry a fifteen year old a couple of weeks after his wife dies, and then he gets fucking guillotined. There is no way Solene doesn’t get fucked over AGAIN in this one. (Also, I just...don’t see them as a romantic couple. He was a customer, they did the do, Ronan was SUPER pissed about it and Danton’s probably forever on his shit list for it, but still. It wasn’t a *romance* for her. It was food for the day. It was part of her rent for the month.)
A random headcanon: The pink ring that Solene wears in the “Je Veux le Monde” music video (and, seemingly, in the showcase video) belonged to her mother. When Mama Mazurier realized she wasn’t going to survive her last birth, when Solene was probably about 5-7, she pressed it deep into the girl’s hand, as if hoping that she could press the ring into her memory as well. It was the last movement she would make in this life. As time went on, the taxes mounted up as one disaster after another seemed to befall the family. They sold off whatever they could, with the ring being one of the few things that remained. (And it got to the point where their debt was so high that, really, selling the ring wouldn’t have helped in the long run, and so Papa Mazurier decided that at least Solene could have it, nearly crying for the first time in front of his children when she offered it to him once before firmly putting it back on her finger). She briefly considered selling it off when she got to Paris, to the point where she had it in the palm of her hand, ready to sell to a street vendor before she decided that it wasn’t worth it, feeling the sharp press of metal when she clasped it hard. When Ronan later told her, “When people lose their dignity, it’s the end,” he didn’t know what she’d done to avoid doing just that. Ronan, as always, saw only what she’d lost, rather than what she’d kept.
Also, since I’m just returning home from the angst wars with Laz and he got a nice, long headcanon, Papa Mazurier loved both of his children equally. Really, he did. He was a true validad, which is also why he had to die. But, looking back, Ronan always felt a little bit like he was the least favorite of the two of them, because it seemed like, generally, Solene tended to get what she wanted more. In reality, though, as Solene would later tell Ronan when he, Olympe, Lazare, and her were sitting down together, it was really just that she knew how to ask for things tactfully, including when to wait, whereas Ronan went in guns blazing. Solene learned how to play the long game, and it paid off. (Also, even though she was initially pissed off over her brother screwing their father’s murderer after abandoning her to pursue a half-baked revenge plot, she is also personally amazed at the fact that, not only did Ronan get a gig that her and most of her friends DREAMED of, a furnished apartment with a faithful, devoted, aristocratic lover who is willing to buy him anything he asks for, not the least well-tailored outfits, he did it accidentally. By continuously insulting him. In prison. If Ronan ever screws this up, Solene is going to personally kill him. And then kick Laz’s ass because Ronan is still her brother dammit.)
General Opinion over said character: Hello, continuing evidence of my bisexuality. The Superior Mazurier Sibling, AKA THE ONE WHO ACTUALLY HAS SOME COMMON SENSE. Deserved better writing, hot cocoa, and to have seen Olympe at least one time that wasn’t over her brother’s corpse. She is one of the few things I think the French cast did best with, since later productions really tried to sanitize her, though I love Zuka!Solene directly calling out Ronan in La Nuit m’Appelle. LET HER HAVE A PLOTLINE DAMMIT. Also: WHY THE FUCK DIDN’T WE GET HER SHOWCASE COSTUME?  (Also, Matthieu Carnot would have rocked as her sibling, just saying.) I just...have many emotions about Solene Mazurier and what she deserves and what she got and I will never forgive the show for skimping on her storyline the entire time and then having the last thing we see of her being her crying her eyes out over the brother who abandoned her (and, okay, in other productions, they reconcile, but it doesn’t ACHIEVE anything between the two of them and it’s mainly Solene reaching out to him whereas I want him groveling). It’s a good thing she hooks up with his beard after his funeral, otherwise the angst and overall incomplete nature of her arc might be too much to bear.

while we’re at it, imma just list all my discourse-inducing opinions here to get it out of my system
feel free to ask for clarification, unfollow, ignore, etc etc. as long as you aren’t a dick, i’ve got no problems with any of that <3
- asexual + aromantic people are part of the LGBT+ community
- drag isn’t inherently transphobic
- trans women are women and TERFs are bad people
- you can want/ work towards a cure for a condition while respecting people with that condition. it’s sure as shit not ableist to want a cure for your condition
- ableism doesn’t get enough attention and is left out of many social justice movements
- mentally ill ppl need to stop silencing the struggles of physically ill/ disabled ppl for the sake of making a point (i.e. those comics/ videos that show people telling physically disabled people to just ‘walk it off’ or ‘just try yoga’ to try and highlight how wrong it is to do that to mentally ill people)
- ideally, we should all work towards eating less meat and fewer animal products. you aren’t a bad person for not doing this, but you are kind of an asshole if you mock vegetarians/ vegans
- climate change is a fuck-off huge problem and we all need to be panicking about it a lot more than we are
- people with paedophillia who have never offended and want to get better deserve help and support, not hatred and death threats
- OCD is still very poorly understood and rarely portrayed correctly by the media and I really wish there was more shown of the obsessive side of it
- using mental illnesses as adjectives (’can we change the volume to an even number? sorry, I’m OCD about that’; using ‘anorexic’ to mean ‘skinny’; misuse of the term ‘psychotic’) is a bad thing to do. it’s not language evolving, it’s misusing terms in an offensive way that belittles mental illness
- the mental illness advocacy movement needs to push awareness of less ‘acceptable’ conditions. i want stuff on psychosis, bipolar disorder, severe OCD, personality disorders, intermittent explosive disorder, addictions, binge-eating disorder. i’m sick of advocacy being for skinny white girls in big grey jumpers with anxiety and depression. don’t get me wrong, those girls deserve support (hell, i am one of them). but goddamn, advocacy cannot work by putting your ‘prettiest’ issues forwards and hiding the ones at the back that are harder to dress up
- i’ve basically never encountered a well-written anorexic character (bar maybe Tix from MMFD) and I very much wish people without eating disorders would do a LOT more research before attempting to write them
- asking for a source/ fact-checking is in no way a bad or offensive thing. ‘jfc couldn’t you just google it?’ doesn’t work when the burden of proof is on you
- feminism is equal rights for all genders. men’s problems deserve help & attention, but not in a way that overrides or ignores women’s problems. the same is true of the opposite. that being said, feminism focuses on women because more often than not, it’s women are being looked down on and treated poorly.
- donald trump is a dangerous and stupid man and i really can’t believe he is the president, what the literal fuck
- the tories are dangerous and i loathe theresa may
- calling women whores, sluts etc is slut-shaming and basically never necessary. ‘bitch’ is a hilarious word when used appropriately (see: Aaron Paul, Glenn Howerton) and is awful in its standard use of meaning ‘any woman who dares speak her mind’. i prefer to reserve the use of ‘cunt’ for people who have hit a significant level of evil. there are very few people who have met this for me, but katie hopkins is one
- the daily mail should be shut the fuck down
- brexit is an awful fucking idea
- if you cannot take care of a pet adequately for whatever reason, you should take action to get the pet to a home where it can be taken care of well. pets are a privilege, not a right.
- there is no real need for white people to have a significant voice in discussions about racism
- pornography is like alcohol: in an ideal world, it wouldn’t really exist/ be used, but we aren’t in that world. most people can use it in moderation and not have a problem with it; some people become addicted to it, and they deserve support to overcome that.
- addiction is a disease and addicts deserve support & help. you can become addicted to essentially anything, and making fun of people for their addictions makes you kind of shitty
- mental illness is an explanation for poor behaviour, not an excuse. if you did a fucked-up thing due to anxiety or depression or mood swings, you still need to accept responsibility and apologise
- if alcohol and tobacco are legal, weed should be legal. legal does not mean ‘this has no risks and everyone should do it’- it means people should be able to make their own choices about whether or not they want to use it, based on actual fact and reason and not heavily biased anti-drug sources
- family is chosen. ‘blood’ and ‘shared DNA’ means very little. you are under no obligation to ever stick with an abuser.
- prostitution has always existed and always will. it should be legalised and regulated, and the people working in it should be protected
- the demonisation of sex workers is very fucked up. you can’t demand a service (e.g. watching porn) while demonising/ belittling the people who provide it (see also: fast food service)
- if two consenting adults want to do something in private, they can go ahead and do it. i’m not into policing how people fuck. if a grown woman wants to get tied up and spanked, it’s patronising and offensive for me to start lecturing about how her childhood and mental illness might have influenced her choices.
- incest ships weird me out, but like, you do you.
- marketing food as ‘guilt-free!’ or ‘sinful...’ is gross and implies eating is a moral choice, which it never is
- goat’s cheese is awful. just awful.
- you can basically cook anything and everything at 200C
- crocs are the worst shoes to ever be invented
- skyler white deserved so much better

@azzythedreemurr this post ended up super fucking long. I’ve been thinking about this for a long time and your post inspired me to actually write it all out, since I get the feeling that you might actually listen.
I wanted it to be its own post so it’ll show up in tags and whatnot, and I’m going to put a 'keep reading’ here so that people can skip it faster, if they want.
I implore you {and anyone else reading} to read everything I have to say and really give it thought before responding. Some of it will likely trigger a negative response, I know because I’ve been in your position before and I would immediately dismiss anything that went against what I believed. Please read this with an open mind. As I say at the end of this, I’m seriously trying to present a compromise and a way to move forward so that both sides get what they want and can move on from this nonsense.
{This is the post I’m responding to, for anyone who wants to read from the source. I’ve copied most of it here but for transparency's sake I’ll link to it.}
Realizing that theres a clear line between Gender and Sex is super important, and i plead that you re-educate yourself on this matter.
If you're not one of the ones denying biology, you aren’t the problem. I don't give a fuck about people identifying as whatever gender they want. I think it's stupid, since gender isn't real, but as long as you're not coming at me and telling me I should identify with a gender (like telling me I should call myself cis instead of just woman. I don't identify as a woman, I just am one by nature.) we don’t have an issue.
There are, however, people hell bent on removing all distinctions between sex and gender. That is what I was referring to.
IDK what exactly you want me to ‘re-educate’ myself on, since it seems we’re in agreement.
What Im saying, is that people who transition from amab to female [...]
You can't transition from male to female. You can't change your biology. You can alter the appearance of your biology through hormones and surgery, but trans males will always be male.
Gender, as we’ve established, is separate from sex. They can call themselves trans women, I don't care. But they'll always be trans women, not women. Words mean something. And the word woman is already defined as adult human female. We need to keep language like that intact, otherwise women don’t have a unifying word to talk about our specifically FEMALE issues.
IDK if you’ve noticed but, radical feminists in general use ‘female’ now to talk about female specific issues, out of respect for the people who identify as some other gender and view ‘woman’ as something gendered. We’re working for liberation of ALL females, even those we don’t necessarily agree with. Expecting us to also give up ‘female’ as a way to refer to our biology is way out of line. It’s effectively silencing us about the collective experience of being female. And no, ‘uterus bearer’ or ‘menstruator’ or any other words that have been thought up to replace it don’t work. None of those words takes into account the collective experience of having a female body.
Female is a holistic term, and that is important to keep intact for us.
that date women are equal to women who date women. [...]
They are equal, obviously, as humans we should respect each other and treat each other as equals.
Because they’re both women who date women.
They’re not both women who date women, though. Trans women who date women are trans women who date women.
Trans woman is defined as someone male who identifies as the gender identity referred to as “woman.”
Women are adult human females.
Neither of these definitions require anyone to agree on what ‘feeling like a woman’ means.
The trans woman gets to say she’s a trans woman, and women get to keep the word that refers to their biology. Win win, in my book.
I’m of the opinion that differences should be celebrated, not suppressed. Differences between trans women and women need to be talked about, and not denied. Biological differences are important. As has been established, we agree on that.
An example of what happens when we don’t talk about differences in biology is this new trend of trans women claiming they have periods. If they are having intense stomach pains, they need to see a doctor. That is not a period, because they don’t have the biology required to have a period, but it could very well be an indication of something seriously wrong. Or it could be gas lol.
And there’s also trans women saying that peeing blood is the same as a period, but peeing blood is NOT normal, and it is certainly NOT the same as when women bleed. I thought we had gotten past males thinking that women bleed from the same place they pee out of, but I guess not! ;)
Second of all, No shit gender is a social construct. Gender is more fake than a terf saying “I support trans people”. I identify as agender myself, so we should both know how fucking stupid gender is as a concept in whole.
Good, we’re still on the same page about gender being objectively fake. The difference is that your side is expecting me to treat it as something real. You’re not doing that, that’s great, but you need to understand that trans activism has become obsessed with forcing everyone to center themselves around ‘gender.’ If you’re serious about not seeing gender as a real thing, and in fact seeing it as stupid, you should be using your time to talk to the trans activists who basically worship gender. Not arguing with the people who agree with you more than you think.
I advise you stop using "terf." It's become nothing more than a silencing tactic because, in my experience, everyone who uses it has a different reason behind it. It doesn't tell me anything as you what you think I'm saying or believe.
Also? You saying that gender and sex are different would get you called a terf by some trans activists. Just a heads up.
Could you elaborate on what you mean when you call me a terf? I genuinely want to know, because if you’re assuming something incorrect about me I’d like the chance to correct it.
Finally: “we realized that none of this trans bullshit actually holds up against critical examination.” Define “None of this trans bullshit” [...]
What I mean by trans bullshit is:
The denial of biological sex. You’ve said you recognize a difference between gender and sex, and you find that distinction important, but your buddies don't anymore. That's a problem.
Insistence on ‘brain sex’ despite all the evidence against it.
Forced assignment of non trans people with the word ‘cis.’ I don’t identify as a gender, I am a woman because I’m an adult human female. I don’t need a word forced on me that means ‘not trans’ or ‘not nonbinary.’
The concept of ‘cis privilege.’ I’ve read through those lists, and as someone who doesn’t conform to the expectations of my sex I don’t actually have most of them. And, most of the ones I’ve seen aren’t actually privileges for women. Being seen as a woman? How is that a privilege?
Forcing everyone to define their sexuality to be based on gender instead of sex.
Bullying lesbians, and bi women who don’t want to date males, into including trans women in their dating pool.
Bullying gay men, and bi men who don’t want to date females, into including trans men in their dating pool. This happens far less, but it’s important to mention.
Bullying straight people, and bi people who only want to date the opposite sex, into dating people of the same sex just because they identify as the gender associated with the opposite sex. Again, happens far less but important to mention here.
Colonizing lesbianism and allowing males to call themselves lesbian, even though a lesbian is a female homosexual.
Changing the definitions of words that we need to remain the same so we can talk about issues and oppression effectively. Words that indicate biological sex, words to talk about sexuality based on biological sex, even the words referring to female biology are being altered (front hole?? Really??)
Lobbying for laws that change protections based on sex into protections based on gender. I don’t mind laws that protect gender identity, I think there should be legal recourse for someone who has been treated unfairly by the government due to their gender identity. Just like I believe in having people protected from being treated unfairly for their religious beliefs. Those laws would also protect people who don’t conform to the expectations of their sex. It’s beneficial to everyone. The issue is that, so far, trans activists haven’t been trying to get new laws created, they’ve been trying to get current laws protecting women changed.
Denial of wrongdoing by trans women. I get that trans activists want to protect trans women, but it’s gone way too far. They’re now defending and denying trans women raping females, and are guilting people out of talking about abuse they’ve experienced at the hands of trans women. It’s alarming how many stories there are about trans women behaving in a very much male way and their victims being silenced and convinced they need to not talk about it in order to protect the trans community.
Denial of the proven fact that trans women commit violence at a similar rate to males as a whole.
The insistence on using ‘correct’ pronouns for abusers and rapists. A person using ‘he’ to describe their trans woman abuser should not be punished or ‘called out.’ Victims have the right to talk about their abuser however they damn well please. This is sometimes excused because it ‘hurts trans women and tells them that we will only respect their gender identity under certain circumstance.’ Yeah, the circumstances of not being a fucking rapist or abuser???
The expectation by trans women of being included in every female space. Females need space away from males. Trans women can, and do, make their own spaces for their own needs. Women should get the same respect. Why is it that trans people get space away from ‘cis’ people, but females don’t get space away from males?
The lgbT community centering everything they do around gender. I dunno about you and your local pride center, but mine has 4 different programs exclusively centered around trans and nonbinary people. Two for youth and two for adults. They have one for adult women, and that program is open to anyone who identifies as a woman. There’s one for adult men, and again it’s for anyone identifying as a man. There are none for girls or boys. And then there are a few that are for the whole community. If we tried to organize something for ‘females’ and one for ‘males’ the backlash would be intense, and it would likely be shut down before it even began. Even if we made it clear that ALL females, regardless of gender identity, and ALL males, regardless of gender identity, were welcome to their respective programs.
I can provide sources for these if you want, but I didn’t want to make this post longer than it is. I have posts that detail these saved elsewhere, so I can get them for you.
Again, if you personally are not doing these things that’s great. However, the other people who use ‘terf’ and attack radical feminists are doing them. Ignoring that doesn’t help anyone.
because the way you said that, gives me a feeling that you mean “Trans woman dating woman is hurting lesbians uwuwuwu”
I don’t think trans women dating women is hurting lesbians. I think trans women calling themselves lesbians is hurting lesbians.
Lesbian means, as I said earlier, female homosexual. This is an important word to keep so that we can talk about how they are oppressed specifically because they experience the intersection of:
misogyny (which is defined as prejudice against females, NOT anyone who “identifies as woman” because ‘gyn’ refers to female biology) and
homophobia (which is prejudice against same sex attracted people).
Trans women who are exclusively attracted to females are heterosexual. To be clear, I don’t expect them to call themselves straight, especially if they’re stealth. But they need to come up with a different word to use to mean ‘trans woman attracted to females’, because lesbian is taken. It is appropriation for them to use the word lesbian when they don’t fit the definition of it. Lesbian means female homosexual, and since a trans woman’s sex is male she can’t be a female homosexual. Pretty simple, I think.
And, if they’re open to people of both sexes, they should be calling themselves bisexual. If they only want to date woman identified people, that’s cool. But they’re still bisexual because bisexual means being attracted to both males and females.
There are trans people who are exclusively attracted to one sex. They are also being hurt in this campaign to get sexuality to refer to gender. They deserve to be respected in their sexuality, and currently they are not. They are being silenced right alongside non trans homosexuals.
Respecting differences of opinion and belief:
As long as we’re on the same page about gender and sex being different, I don’t think there should be any issue. Me not believing in gender doesn’t mean that I can’t respect someone’s beliefs about gender. I don’t believe in Christianity, or any religion, and I don’t go around harassing Christians, or other religious people. As long as they just live their lives and leave me out of it, we don’t have an issue. The only time I have a problem with them is when they try to change laws that affect me or come at me and try to convert me to their beliefs. Or if they insist on me referring to myself with some word that specifically means I’m not of their faith. I’m an atheist, that indicates a disbelief in any religion. I don’t need to be assigned a word that means ‘not Christian’ or ‘not Jewish’ or ‘not Muslim.’
It’s the same for trans activists. I don’t misgender anyone, I don’t go out of my way to trigger actual disphoria or even social disphoria. I’ll use the names they choose, I won’t ask what their ‘real name’ is because I find that insulting to them and just plain unnecessary. I’ll use their pronouns, assuming I understand HOW to use them since some of them use odd sets. And if I don’t know how to use them, I’ll just use their name (or ‘they’) the whole time I speak about them.
Tbh, I respect trans people in general more than I respect Christians in general. I know you might not believe that, but it’s the truth.
The issues arise when they do the things I listed in the trans bullshit part of this post. If they didn’t do that shit, I would be perfectly content with a live and let live attitude towards them.
Moving forward:
There is a lot of work to be done to erase the damage that’s been caused by trans activists insisting that biological sex isn’t real. I think that trans activists who, like yourself, recognize the important distinction between gender and sex can work with the radical feminists who, like myself, respect gender identity. We could potentially come up with a solution that works for both sides. The LGBT communities in other parts of the world don’t have these kinds of conflicts, and I would like to follow their lead and end this insane war. But that’s only going to happen if we start working together.
Especially those of us who are visibly sex stereotype non conforming. We have a lot of the same experiences, and we should be working together and talking about them together instead of dividing ourselves based on what ‘gender’ we do or don’t identify with. Trans women should be working with other males who don’t conform to sex stereotypes, regardless of if they identify as trans or nonbinary. Trans men should be working with other females who don’t conform, too.
Find the commonalities, and celebrate and respect the differences. It’s a simple thing that has been warped by this shit.
I’ve posted a lot of angry things to this blog, but I genuinely don’t want to be angry about this anymore. I don’t want to fight, I don’t want this hatred, I don’t want this community to be eating each other alive because I think it only benefits conservatives and bigots. We’re giving all our attention to this bullshit when we could be working for the protection and happiness of all of us.
I’m tired. I want to work with people who are just as tired to end this.
This is an olive branch. Take it or leave it.

The character writing was so good and the protagonists were so identifiable, that I think this often gets overlooked. I’m, in fact, not sure people realise that Persona 4 was about the way that individuality should be suppressed. This is the message of Persona 4 - being a teenager is about having a messy but valid barrage of desires and emotions, but being an adult is learning how to accept that they’re there, and then suppress them and only reveal them to a very select few individuals so as not to selfishly disrupt societal order. Persona 4 understands that conformity comes at a price, but it never questions that that price is too high to pay. This is why Yukiko’s route ends with her deciding to take over the inn - something that the English lang fandom seems to perpetually not understand. This is also why Kanji reappears with black hair in the epilogue to Golden.
And, yes, following the thread of logic through, Kanji’s storyline is about how to be closeted. People seem to think that the end of his story is the beginning of something more instead of the end of it. It’s the end. He became close friends with Souji, and arguably some of the other members of the crew, and was able to tell them - yes, i like men - like it’s a slightly embarrassing hobby for the weekends - and then go back to being who he’s supposed to be publicly. A hardworking and polite student and citizen, who’s gayness remains largely invisible. Doubly so if he ends up with Naoto, who will be wearing a two-piece suit-skirt combo as she struggles to climb the ranks in detective work.
Uuugh, really this game is so, so Japanese. And I feel like people are constantly interpreting it with the Western value towards individuality in mind and then getting confused when the narrative doesn’t reward them in the way they want but- I also can’t blame them because I, too, am really Western, and the idea that the individual should be suppressed to this extent for the sake of society gets my fuckin’ blood boilin’. Like, fuck you, Atlas. When society pushes its citizens so hard that they’re having all this inner trauma about how to maintain their public facade... when does that become a man vs society conflict instead of a man vs self conflict for you?
*rolls around on the floor* And, I actually like this game, and its characters, and the care it takes to treat its characters and their struggle with humanity. But I really think the values at its core fucking suck. And I’m very aware that the values at its core that I think fucking suck are the values of Japanese society at large. And I really can’t really handle the amount of cognitive dissonance and self-hatred that my brain is currently generating.
Why i’m stewing in this today under the cut:
I was reading some rather well-written Chie/Yukiko fic when I got utterly jarred out of the story by (1) how the issue of Yukiko taking over the inn was handled and (2) Chie’s persistent insistence that Yosuke was gay. Not that Yosuke couldn’t be gay but... at some point you feel like you’re reading the author stubbornly insisting through the characters instead of letting things happen naturally and its not fun.
So, having heard that there was a cut romance option for Yosuke in the game, I went looking for the receipts. It seems legit but, tbh, it upsets me even more. Why is there a cut romance option for Yosuke? Or, rather, why is there not a cut romance option for Kanji? You know - Kanji - who has a whole storyline in the game about his internalized homophobia and coming to terms with it and canonically is attracted to masculinity? Oh, I’ll tell you why, partner. It’s because Souji/Yosuke is total fucking fujobait. It’s not real BL if one of the characters is a hulking blond strongman that actually identifies and struggles with issues affecting the LGBT+ community. Like, I don’t even hate Souji/Yosuke - It’s not my favourite by far, but I do own a few doujins about them from a circle I like so it’s not a NoTP either. But you have to be kidding yourself if you think that the reason that Atlus considered including it - far from the context of any of the actual LGBT+ content in the game - was for any reason other than to pander to fujoshi. It hits all the right emotional and aesthetic notes - two scrawny pretty boys, love knows no gender. it’s okay if it’s you - it’s WEAK.
And, of course, looking this up plunged me straight back into all the gd Naoto drama. I can respect, if not be particularly engaged by, Naoto being a woman struggling to be taken seriously for her intelligence and interests and chosen career field, while also wanting to be feminine. But I can in no way respect that the narrative then chose to use male!Naoto and a rather unrealistic gender reassignment surgery to embody the struggle inside her heart. I understand the usage was metaphorical, but it’s also waaay too literal to use as the impulse that Naoto must fight against. Yeah, Naoto’s not trans, but why isn’t she? Why did the game decide to use trans imagery to tell her story and then go in a direction that made the connotations of transness pejorative. Mmm, you get no guesses.

Things I Hate As A Queer Woman Reading M/M Romances
-transphobia. Most of these authors are straight women. They have NO RIGHT making out like the gay community isn't aware of trans people. Sure, there are plenty of gay transphobes. Including them in the story isn't unrealistic. They are, of course, wrong. But for fucks sake don't make your alleged PROTAGONIST say thoughtlessly transphobic bullshit. Don't equate genitals with gender. -biphobia. You know what's wrong with my sexual orientation? NOT A DAMN THING. BACK THE HELL UP. -finding a way to make the straight female friend their relationship orchestrating savior. I see you. You want to make this story still somehow about you. Reminds me of a cis woman I once saw who got up on stage for a damn drag costume contest. -physiological improbabilities. Don't make me suffer through a description that makes it PAINFULLY APPARENT that you have never done anal. Or, for that matter, ENJOYED giving a blow job in your life. -no discussion of safe sex. Do you remember the early 90s? Because I FUCKING DO. -no awareness of how erections work. For fucks sake. Just ask a dude. I ask my dude friends (especially the one I married) the background research questions I have about dicks and the ownership thereof. They're pretty chill about answering! There is no excuse for not knowing how a penis functions if you're writing porn about it! One word for you: CHAFING. It matters. -also most adult men are not running around getting erections every time they hear a sexy voice or see a butt. That's middle schoolers you're thinking of. -misogyny. This is a big one for me. Sure, plenty of gay men have a grudge against femme men. Why? Because EVERYTHING SUCKS AND OUR CULTURE IS GARBAGE, not because that's in any way a healthy or acceptable attitude! Don't give me that "not like a woman" garbage! Or if you do just own it: "no fatties, no femmes, no Asians"--the Grindr song of the asshole white gay man y'all are so desperate to write about. -stop writing about petty assholes who pitch temper tantrums. I hate it in het romances and I hate it in same sex romances. Give me a protagonist I can root for, not a whiny jerk I hope gets hit by a bus in Chapter 2. Ugh. I hate trying to read something fun and just running smack into someone who clearly doesn't see queers as people. I don't, in general, worry a ton about the arguments around fetishization; I think a good story should avoid that by virtue of treating its characters as people. But when you get some of these stories it's like watching some absolute creep play with two Ken dolls. It's as bad as some of the soft core "lesbian" pornography for men I have reluctantly and uncomfortably consumed over the years because finding actual content made for wlw by wlw is a challenge and often expensive. And then all the standard things apply--stop making Chapter 1 a goddamn infodump, STOP DOING IT, HAVE YOU LEARNED NOTHING

Cleaning up a Self Care Masterpost
I found this masterpost I thought had some really good links here: http://corpsazorsomething.tumblr.com/post/76307283123/self-care-master-post
Unfortunately, some of the links are no longer current. So, because I like organizing and tidying things up, I decided to recreate it, but updated without the dead links. Not all of the links were relevant or useful to me but I kept everything in but the dead links. Credit goes to corpsazorsomething.tumblr.com for the original list. Notes in parenthesis were originally there, notes with an asterisk are ones I added.
The original list had 224 links. This one has 151. (If I counted correctly.)
Also, many of these links go to other masterposts. I have not checked the links in those masterposts, only this one. I may make that my next project.
