“Raavan”/ “Raavanan” (2010)
“Raavan” and “Raavanan” are basically the same film, directed simultaneously by director Mani Ratnam, the former in Hindi and the latter in Tamil. Most of the actors also reprise their roles, and Aiswarya Rai Bachchan stars in both.
The story goes as follows : Dev,a police officer (Vikram in “Raavan”/Prithviraj Sukumaran in “Raavanan”) is dispatched to the humid South of India to hunt and bring to justice Beera (or Veera in Tamil, played in the Hindi film by Abishek Bachchan and in the Tamil one by Vikram),an outlaw and tribal leader of a clan, that rules his unofficial dominion like a king of old,and whom the villagers revere like a local hero, attributing to him almost superhuman qualities. He also has a vendetta against Dev,since he was responsible for a police raid targeting him, that disrupted his sister’s wedding and triggered the events leading to her suicide. For this reason, he kidnaps Dev’s beautiful wife,Ragini (Aiswarya Rai),with the intent of killing her as retaliation. However her strong personality, determination and devotion to her husband make him change his mind. He uses her to lure Dev deep into the uncharted forests and jungles where his lair lies ,intending to avenge himself, yet helplessly falling in love with Ragini in the process. She,meanwhile, remains singlemindedly faithful to her husband who, with a small police army and the help of an eccentric, almost monkey-like forest guard, pursues them, the obsession of catching Beera slowly replacing the initial concern for his wife in his mind. However,in the almost mythological wilderness of the jungle, even Ragini’s feelings of hate for her captor become clouded. Everything leads to a confrontation between the two men which ultimately ends in tragedy, though not in the way one quite expected.

If it hasn’t yet become clear, the film is a modern, abstract retelling of “Ramayana”,the ancient Hindu epic narrating the abduction of exiled prince Rama’s wife,Sita,by the demon king of Lanka, the ten-headed Ravana, and Rama and his allies’ long and deadly war to get her back. The film cleverly incorporates nods to the original work (like Beera being a man of ten faces and seeming to be in ten places at once, the policeman gripping his sister by the nose,Beera moving his hands above Ragini without touching her) and weaves them in a modern narrative that remains independently engaging, and yet acquires a deeper, slightly removed from reality charm,as if the sheer age and cultural significance of the “Ramayana” seeps through. It is quite a psychologically complex film, yet one of relatively few words; pivotal changes in character direction and emotional realizations are conveyed through the eyes and body language of the protagonists.
Tumblr media
As the title implies, our main character is Ravana, here called Beera or Veera,a mere man instead of a rakshasha (demon),a tribal leader instead of a king and decidedly mortal instead of almost immortal, though it certainly seems otherwise. He is without a doubt the most intriguing character of the film, declaring himself the worst of men,yet preserving his own code of honor, murdering horrifically the police officers, yet respecting Ragini, seeming almost mad at times, but understanding more than he lets on,called a terrorist by the law,yet displaying unexpected wisdom and leadership. He is a man of many talents, uneducated and yet knowledgeable, seemingly rough and uncouth, yet confessing his love for Ragini poetically, almost reverentlially, brutal and ruthless, but pained to tears by his sister’s trauma and death. He surely seems a more heroic character than the law enforcers; they are repeatedly shown to be abusing their power in their struggle to get to him,and hardly seem to consider him and his people human, almost like animals, or rather demons. Dev in particular is guilty of this,as he obsessively chases him through the jungle, and in his unflinching certainty that he is doing the right thing, his other emotions seem to dry up,until a last cruel deed enables him to have his revenge (those familiar with the Ramayana know the film couldn’t possibly have a happy ending, even after Dev and Ragini reunite). Beera condemns outright the caste divide that pushes his disenfranchized tribe to the bottom of social order and out of the reach of human consideration by those in power. The message is clear and, though not particularly subtly given, rings true.So questions are born, and some of them give food for reconsideration and alternate interpretations. What is good? What is evil? Does only the law decide if a man is good or bad? Can a man be both right and unjust or cruel and noble? Is being godlike the same as being good? Is being demonic mutually exclusive to being heroic? Can love overcome everything, even a few well-aimed words meant to hurt at the end of a long separation?
Tumblr media
The performances are more than satisfying. Vikram, though equally good as Dev in the Hindi film is, I think, the best Beera of the two in the Tamil one, more subdued, more believable, displaying a wider range of emotions. Yet Abishek Bachchan’s performance has something truly demonic and otherwordly at times, his face contorting like the grimace of an ancient statue,so it may be more a matter of taste, though I generally think that the Tamil version functions somewhat better as a film too,so keep that in mind. Aiswarya Rai is in my opinion very good here, in a role emotionally and physically very demanding, her beauty used as an analogy for her inner spirit, brilliantly contrasted with the wilderness of the jungle. The other performances are very good, and not enough can be said about the direction and the brilliant cinematography, the foggy bamboo forests, cliffs, rivers and monsoon-drenched huts through which the action unfolds, giving the impression of retreating into an older,mist-shrouded, alien time, into a magnified, altered state of reality. The “civilized” men of the law seem to shed layers of civilization and reason as they plow through marshes littered with ancient ruins, where the outlaws reign supreme,as if the untamed nature is their own untouchable kingdom. There be demons;there each man and woman confronts their own. Some emerge better, others worse;some alive, some dead.
All in all,no matter what version you choose,we’re talking about a wonderful film, that functions equally well as an adventure with trappings of a police thriller or a mythological retelling. For lovers of mythology,India, beautiful scenery and good cinema, highly recommended.

It's been 10 years since the film came out, but no one can tell me that the Deewangi scene in Om Shanti Om wasn't the coolest, most epic and meta dance scene in the history of cinema

Although this movie, overall, was entertaining, there were moments that it was too cliche. Now, I’m usually the sort of person who likes the cheesy clichés in movies, and I did like them in this film but there were segemnts, especially in the first 40 minutes, where the jokes seemed poorly refurbished. Once all the guys are assembled, the movie picks up and there a less moments of flat, overacted/forced dialogue. Although I’ve liked Shahrukh and Deepika in their films together, this one was a little romance lite. It was more about the heist, comedy and the friendship growing between everyone in the group. With all that said, I did enjoy this movie and found myself laughing quite a few times. However, some of the elements such as really great locations, sweet romance, we’re missing and I don’t love this movie so much that I want to watch it again right away. If I come back to his film it will be for some of the funnier scenes, but otherwise I do not think I’ll watch this whole 2hr53min film in its entirety again. 7/10
