The King's Men - Chapter Nine

Day: Saturday, January 20th Time: 4:38 PM EST

Andrew sat beside him and held something up. Neil looked, but it took a minute before he understood what Andrew was offering him. The dealership had given him two keys for his new ride, and Andrew was giving the second one to Neil. When Neil took too long to take it from him, Andrew dropped it on the concrete between them. "A man can only have so many issues," Andrew said. "It is just a key." "You're a foster child. You know it isn't," Neil said. He didn't pick the key up but pressed two fingers to it, learning the shape and feel of this newest gift. "I've always had enough cash to live comfortably, but all the decent places ask too many questions. There are background checks and credit checks and references, things I can't provide on my own without leaving too much of a trail. I squatted in Millport. Before that I stayed in decrepit weekly hotels or broke into people's cars or found places that were happy being paid under the table. "It's always been 'go'," Neil said. He turned his hand palm-up and traced a key into his skin with his fingertip. He'd toyed with Andrew's house key so many times he knew every dip and ridge by heart. "It's always been 'lie' and 'hide' and 'disappear'. I've never belonged anywhere or had the right to call anything my own. But Coach gave me keys to the court, and you told me to stay. You gave me a key and called it home." Neil clenched his hand, imagining the bite of metal against his palm, and lifted his gaze to Andrew's face. "I haven't had a home since my parents died."

yes, neil doesn’t shy away from andrew’s past since he knows abuse too and we all know it and love it, but I want neil that just selfishly, morbidly wants to know every little thing about andrew. every bad memory, all unfiltered abuse included.

neil that wants to know what was andrew’s routine after being raped. that wants to know if andrew ever had to feed himself rotting food bc his foster parents didn’t care to provide fresh one. he wants to know if andrew let blood drip down his arm when he hurt himself or if he quickly wiped it off. he wants to know how many shards of glass were imbedded in andrew’s skin after the accident with tilda.

he doesn’t really offer comfort when he’s offered those truths bc andrew doesn’t want it and what is comfort worth for men like them anyway. and he never asks for those truths – he’d never take them without being given them freely. but he collects them like one would collect marbles: to have them, to hold them, to look at them, to keep them forever

Andrew being a stickler about the house being clean and it starts to piss Neil off so he asks Andrew about it only to discover that a lot of his foster parents only fostered him in order to have a free housekeeper and they would beat him or send him back if the house wasn't to their standards. Neil always does his best to clean up to keep Andrew from stressing out about it, but assures Andrew that he can live in his own house. He doesn't have to make his existence invisible.

I imagine that Nicky and Erik wanted to foster a lot of kids but no programs wanted to be involved with gay parents at that time and laws made very difficult for them to adopt too (but eventually they do).

Nicky wanted a family so bad that when he could he surely volunteered to help troubled teens in facilities and made his own ONG to donate to queer kids that have problems being accepted.

His organization grows so big over the years that they are known internationally and ofc Andrew and Neil are involved with it and do some charity events.

Nicky is so proud of his little cousin and in secret Andrew is proud of him too because after dealing with him he thought that Nicky would throw all the idea of raising kids away but he's glad he didn't so various kids could have the childhood he didn't.

"How did you get that stuff?" Andrew asks because the store's hours meant it was always long closed by the time he would meet up with Alex but the cocoa was always warm.

"Broke in most nights." Neil admits easily, "Picking a lock like that wasn't hard. Always left cash for the little old lady who ran it." Neil says.

It's Neil's turn but he doesn't ask Andrew anything else until they get to the Court. "Did you ever go back there after I left?" he asks.

Andrew thinks about the shop, thinks about how he'd go and see if Alex was there. How when his Foster Parents came to take him out of Cass' house after the scandal he'd asked if they could stop by just one more time. How their eyes glint with interest when he had mentioned a friend.

"More than once." Isn't a lie but it isn't the full truth either. Neil opens the car door, "How did you always know the candy I liked the most?" Andrew asks because Alex had shown up that first day with gummy worms and green rock candy.

"I just asked." Neil says with a sad smile.

"The shopkeeper?" Andrew asks surprised she'd remember what each child liked considering she forgot her glasses were on her head most the time.

"It's not your turn to ask a question Andrew." Neil shut the car door.

So we know Andrew loves and protects his car because it’s his baby, the constant in his life that has never failed him. He fully owns it and it’s not something he has to share with siblings or owe back to a foster parent. It’s portable so it’s also his exit, in case he needs to leave.

When it gets ruined by the Ravens, he is utterly bereft, like a piece of him is missing. But when Neil gets him the new Maserati, Andrew doesn’t know what to do with himself because he now owes a guy he’s trying desperately not to open up to. And somehow, without Andrew saying anything, Neil knew that this was important to him, enough to blow his own exit fund/life savings. And just that willingness on Neil’s part to do it showed Andrew that he didn’t need the car anymore, not really, because Neil was his new safety net. Inadvertently, letting Neil buy him a new version of this most important possession and sharing his keys is the first real step that Andrew is opening up and sharing his heart.

Andrew Minyard doesn’t give a fuck about being rich. He and Neil live in a decent apartment with plenty of space for them and the cats and an extra two rooms for company. He has two sports cars but only because Neil refused to get himself a car. And he has a full wardrobe. And Andrew is perfectly happy with that and nothing more. Sure they go on expensive trips here and there and pay extra for secluded tables at clubs but they are not the kind to blow their money on ridiculous things. Andrew is also not the kind to hoard his money. So he funds charities for kids in foster care and throws his money at political campaigns to change the way that foster parents are assessed because he can’t imagine any more kids ending up like him. He also makes donations under various aliases to the hospital that his brother works at so they can get better equipment and expand. He sends Nicky and Eric plane tickets every month so they can visit if they want. He even pays to fly all the foxes to come see Neil when he’s had a bad week. Every baby announcement from the foxes ends with Andrew setting up a college fund. He will never admit to liking the foxes but he’ll be damned if he isn’t grateful for their support of Neil and eventually even of him.

The Raven King - Chapter Ten

Day: Monday, October 30th Time: 11:10 AM EST

"I asked you this once and you didn't really answer," Neil said. "Now can you tell me why Andrew likes you?" "Last year Andrew took a few of us out to Eden's Twilight one at a time," Renee said. "You know now why Andrew invited Matt. He invited Dan to see if she was a woman worth following on the court. He asked me because he, like you, didn't buy into this front." She gestured at her face and rested her fingertips on her cross necklace. "He wanted the truth, so I told him. Andrew found out he and I have a lot in common." Renee glanced at Neil as they stopped at a crosswalk on Perimeter Road. "The only differences between us are luck and faith." "And psychosis," Neil said. Renee smiled. "Maybe not. I am a bad person trying very hard to be a good person, but I would not be trying at all if not for the outside interventions in my life. I grew up with my mother and her string of heavy- handed boyfriends." She seemed unbothered by her words and turned a calm stare on the crosswalk as she spoke. "Maybe it is inevitable that I got into trouble myself. I started working as a lookout and runner for one of Detroit's gangs. It took me a couple years to work my way up to harder work. I did anything they asked me to and didn't care who I hurt. Fortunately for me, I was not as smart as I thought I was. When I was fifteen the police caught me, and my lawyer traded my testimony for a reduced sentence. My words got a lot of people in trouble, including my mother. My lawyer explained my home life so the court would understand my lack of positive role models. His findings sent both my mother and her then-lover to prison on assorted charges. They were beaten to death by angry members of the gang I helped put away." "I'm sorry," Neil said, when in reality he was a little jealous. Both she and Wymack lost their parents to prison violence, but no one dared attack his father. It would solve a world of problems for Neil if a few inmates could just work up enough aggression and courage. "I'm not," Renee said, jarring Neil from his thoughts. Renee started across the street but it took Neil a couple seconds before he could follow her. Renee smiled at him when he caught up. "I know I should be, but that's still something I'm working on. I know I was directly responsible for the circumstances that led to their murders, but to be honest I hated them. On top of that, without my mother's death I never would have ended up here."With my mother dead and my biological father in the wind, the courts had no choice but to release me into foster care after my year at a juvenile facility," Renee said. "I made life as difficult as I could for my foster families and jumped eight homes in two years. Stephanie Walker found out about me from one of my foster mothers at her high school reunion. She put in a request for me, pushed until it was approved, and moved me to North Dakota as soon as it was finalized. She gave me a new name, a new faith, and a new chance at life." Renee hadn't been exaggerating when she said she and Andrew were a lot alike. They had violent, unstable upbringings thanks to their mothers and spent time in both juvie and the foster system. Their paths split irrevocably after their respective adoptions. Renee let Stephanie shape her into a decent human being and atoned for her past brutality whereas Andrew murdered his mother the first chance he got. Neil finally understood why Renee wasn't afraid of Andrew.

AFTG fic idea

Hi! I have some fic ideas for All of the Game fanfics, and want some opinions!

Pretty please? I have put some snippets of the stories with the ideas!

You can vote at the bottom for which fic I should write!

The options are;

First: Neil is not the only freshman to start at the Foxes that year, but Mike/Michaela (an androgynous person) is the other (Dealer or Striker?) They have known Andrew for years and are because of that 'adopted' into the Monsters. What nobody knows is that they are the daughter of Lola. They hate their mother and become very protective over Neil. *maybe pairing with Kevin, or with Neil/Andrew*

Snippet from this story;

''So it's true? You're a whore?'' The bitch sneers.

Michaela laughs and gives them a frightening grin. ''I never did say what my services are, did I? It's just funny that everyone always assumes it has something to do with sex.'' She purrs.

Neil has stiffened next to him, and she can't blame him. Now she knows who he is, her 'killer' smile probably makes him nervous. She knows she looks like her mother that way.

And after all, her mother is none other than his father's right hand.

Second: Neil gets badly hurt during an attack by his father, and his mother needs to leave him for a couple of weeks to get them off their trail. Neil passes out in a warehouse and gets picked up by the police and put into foster care because our boy will never say anything about his parents. There he meets Andrew at the Spear house. (you can probably imagine the horror they go through) before his mother finds him again and kidnaps him, but not before torching the house. Neil thinks Andrew is dead and is grieving, while Andrew survives the fire barely (he has some bad scars.) Andrew gets adopted by the Minyards and follows canon until Neil comes back into play in Arizona. *Andriel*

Snippet from this story;

Andrew is frozen, he had not expected to ever see Abram again. He truly thought the kid died. His only friend. He thought-

''DREW!'' Abram cries out and throws himself in Andrews's arms, and even after all these years, Andrew recognizes Abram as if he's his own touch and doesn't flinch away. No, he pulls him tighter against him, hugging him like they have never been separated. He is the only person who can touch him without warning. The only one he even wants to touch and someone who never has made his skin crawl.

''I thought you died,'' He hears Abram whisper against his ear; Andrew feels more than hears the hitched, pained breath that leaves Abram.

''I can say the same, idiot,'' He tells Abram gruffly, making the other boy snort. Christ, he's taller than Andrew now. The asshole, how dare he?

Third: Neil never ran with his mother and has grown up with Kevin in the Nest. When Kevin's hand is broken, Neil gets him out and brings him to the Foxes, he also gets Jean out, but has to pay the price himself. Then after months of silence and Kevin being sure his friend is dead, he turns up at the Foxhole Court. He has made another deal with Ichirou. If he can disgrace Riko, and kill him afterwards, he has earned Kevin's and Jean's continued freedom. He never made a deal for himself. *A Neil/Andrew/Kevin pairing*

Snippet from this fic;

''You are still going to play, Kevin Day-'' A chuckle escaped the red-haired boy before him. ''-You will not let him win, and you will not give up. You will play Exy-'' ''But-'' A hard tug shut him up before he could say more. ''You are going to play Exy and show the world that those numbers mean nothing.'' He gestured to Kevin's cheek before pointing to his own. Nathaniel's had just been tattooed yesterday, before the match that ruined everything.

Kevin sucked in a breath and whimpered when Nathaniel started wrapping his hand up in bandages. He then shoved a bottle of Vodka in Kevin's lap and ordered him to drink, which Kevin did without complaint. It dulled the pain, even if it was just a little.

Kevin spaced out for a moment, but before he knew it, Nathaniel was in front of him again—this time with a duffle bag slung over his shoulder and a phone pressed against his ear.

He talked in rapid Japanese, and Kevin tried to focus on what was being said, but he could only make out a few words.

''-dangerous-'' ''Broken investments-'' ''Anything.'' ''-get us out.''

hi anon 🧡 ty for being so nice!!! it has been a while since you asked this question, sorry. ive read a lot of excellent portrayals of wymack, but i don’t know that i could name any fics that really focus on this? as you probably know, i wrote one wymack pov fic, but it’s still mostly about andreil hahaha.

ANYWAY. i know you said parental, but i was kinda thinking abt the very unique role he serves. And I did write a little scene abt Andrew’s midnight break-ins to Wymack’s apartment 🤪 cw for vague mentions of past abuse/self-harm.

“And here’s the real kicker, Coach.”

Wymack is fairly certain that the information Andrew is about to deliver will not be the kicker. He’s fairly certain that it will only lead Andrew to another line of outrage about the thing he is always rattling on about these days when he breaks into Wymack’s liquor cabinet: Neil Josten.

“He doesn’t even listen to music!” Andrew says. “I know you see him running on that treadmill too, eyes glazed over like a goddamn zombie. I heard Boyd offer to let him borrow his iPod, and he went, ‘oh, no thanks, I don’t listen to music.’ And Boyd kept pushing him, trying to find out if he liked an obscure genre or something. But he is ambivalent to it. Be honest, Coach — did he grow up in some kind of satanic cult? Is he brainwashed? Is he going to hear some code word and go ape shit on us?”

Andrew is lying on his back on the sofa, dirty boots on the arm rest and a bottle of Jack Daniels in one hand. He’d made significant progress on it before Wymack even got home, and Wymack can see it flushing his cheeks and ringing around his eyes.

Wymack has dealt with a lot of fucked up kids, but in some ways, Andrew is one of the most difficult. It’s not the violence or the bad manners or the obstinance — Wymack can deal with that shit all day long.

It’s nights like this that make Andrew such a challenge in Wymack’s head: Why does Andrew come here? What is he looking for? What has Wymack done to earn this frankly irritating privilege — and how can he make sure he doesn’t squash it?

Andrew doesn’t talk to anyone. Betsy doesn’t tell Wymack much about the kids, but even she has expressed worry at the layers of repression Andrew seems to hold.

But sometimes here, between casting Neil in various villainous roles or complaining about Kevin or stating his grievances with Palmetto State’s meal options, Andrew drops in something real. A comment about getting slapped by a foster mother. A crude joke about the scars Wymack already knows are on his arms. Hints toward some kind of big secret that Andrew seems to dangle in the air between.

It’s always casual. It always feels like a test. Wymack doesn’t know if he passes or fails — Andrew always just finds his next tangent and moves on.

Wymack rubs his temples. He must take too long to offer a grunt to indicate he’s listening, because Andrew looks over to where Wymack sits in his armchair.

“I don’t think Neil is religious,” Wymack finally offers.

“But would we really know?” Andrew asks. He sighs, dramatic, turning his head away again. “He doesn’t add up.”

“He’s hiding things,” Wymack agrees. “So is everyone else on the team.”

“Yes, but everyone else on the team isn’t as interesting.” Andrew brings the bottle to his lips again. “He’s a threat. But it would be less of a problem if he wasn’t so nice to look at. It’s very distracting.”

Well. Wymack didn’t see that coming.

Maybe he should have.

Andrew keeps his eyes on the ceiling, but the air is charged as he waits for Wymack’s reaction. Wymack holds in a heavy breath.

“Maybe you’re looking so much that you’re seeing stuff that isn’t there,” Wymack says.

“Ha,” Andrew says, but there’s little amusement in his voice. He tips his face toward Wymack, pointing with the bottle in his hands. “That’s a good one, Coach. But no. He’s definitely up to something, and I’m going to figure it out. How far is Millport from Area 51?”

“Far enough,” Wymack says.

Andrew hums. “He’s pretty fast. Maybe he escaped containment there and ran.”

Wymack snorts. “Report back when you’ve exhausted that theory. Preferably not in the middle of the fucking night.”

Andrew laughs. It’s not a joyful sound, but it’s familiar.

The are boundaries he’s supposed to maintain, and he knows Andrew wouldn’t want to have rules bent for him. The minute Wymack gives Andrew an open-door policy, he’ll never see him again. He’ll never get to see if he’s passing Andrew’s tests — he’ll never figure out if there’s something he can do.

So he’ll play the role. It’s not hard — he’s old and grumpy and tired. He’ll listen to Andrew bitch, even when it’s about these other kids whose names weigh heavy in his chest.

Maybe it will pay off, maybe it won’t. But this is the job. He has to be okay with these odds — they’re the best he’s going to get.

Hiii!

So this is an idea I had for a soft-ish high school au where the Foxes are all still traumatized, but have been adopted into stable homelife situations and are finally in a position where they can start to heal.

The families are as follows:

Wymack adopts Dan, Seth, and Nicky.

Abby adopts Kevin.

Betsy adopts Andrew.

Randy gains sole custody of Matt and adopts Aaron.

Stephanie adopts Renee.

Allison lives with her grandpa.

And Neil lives with Stuart.

Wymack adopts Seth 1st when Seth’s mom dies. Seth is ~11 (his dad has already walked out by then) when he is adopted. Unfortunately the rest of Seth’s siblings get divided up by the foster system but Wymack is able to help Seth track them down and arrange visits them when Seth wants to.

Wymack adopts Dan next when Dan is thrown into the foster system instead of the care of her aunt cuz her aunt refuses to take custody of her. Dan is ~9 when this happens.

Nicky comes last, when he gets taken away from Luther by CPS for sending Nicky to conversion camp at 13. He is put into and adopted by Wymack.

Abby adopts Kevin after Kayleigh dies cuz as much as Wymack would love to adopt Kevin, at this point he already has 3 kids and can’t really take anymore. Abby volunteers and since Wymack and Abby are moreorless married, for Kevin it’s basically just like as if he’s living with Wymack.

Instead of the Spears, luck of the draw the foster system puts Andrew with Betsy and it’s all pretty straight forward from there.

When Matt is 8, his dad dies, so Randy gets custody of Matt by default. Some years later, Matt wants a younger brother and Randy wants to foster. Luck of the draw and they adopt Aaron. Tilda dies when Aaron is ~9. Luther and Maria are deemed unfit for children (hence Nicky being taken away and ending up with Wymack) so he gets put into the system. Randy adopts him.

Stephanie and Renee is basically the same as canon except Renee is aged down a bit.

When Allison is ~13 and developing her eating disorder, her grandpa takes her out of her parents custody and helps her out.

Neil is living with Stuart because Stuart decides to make his move against Nathan super early, when Neil was about to be given to the Moriyamas. He kills Nathan, but Mary dies in the process. Stuart takes custody of Neil as a result.

Everyone is in the same city and goes to the same high school.

That was a very long set-up explanation lol. The main story would be just general high school shenanigans. Here are some snippets:

Dan crosses her arms. “What do you want then.”

The boy, Matthew Boyd she thinks his name is, holds up a flower, cheeks red. “I—I wanted to give this to you.”

Andrew definitely doesn’t have strong feelings about Neil Josten’s lips. Not at all. Because Andrew hates Neil Josten.

Andrew pokes Aaron’s cheek. “Stop making my face look weird.”

Aaron scoffs. “Stop being a little bitch then.”

“We are the exact same height.”

“I’m not talking to you unless you take off your shirt or something.”

Kevin shrugs, easily pulling his shirt over his head, abs flexing attractively. Andrew glares at his physically toned perfection. Absolutely disgusting.

“Now will you talk to me?” Kevin puts his hands on his hips like a disapproving mother. It’s awfully reminiscent of Wymack and shirtless Wymack is absolutely not an image Andrew wants in his head.

“No,” Andrew says. “Put your shirt back on. No one wants to see that.”

“You literally just said—“

“Andrew!” Bee calls from the house. Kevin scrambles to put his shirt back on just as Bee steps out onto the porch.

Why do I personally enjoy gay romances to het ones? Preference and taste probably. I also tend to enjoy the angst, longing, tropes, passion, etc in the way its written more than I do in the ways those things are written between a straight couple. And that's not to say I don't enjoy straight romances either! I have plently of het ships I love too, and a few good romances that aren't gay 😂 I just have a preference, and that's okay! As for recommendations!! I have a LOTS! If you want to tell me about what YOU like to read, I can give even better recs. But for in general, some of my favorites...

(Locked fic, you need an account. This fic is THICK but it's by far one of the best Andriel fics I've ever read or just in general. SO GOOD and so emotional and so sweet and so cute)

WIP Wednesday 2/21/24 (CLOSED) | Math Nerd AU

The caseworker leaves and his foster parents call him downstairs. They let him know they're having beef stew for dinner and to let Aaron know that. He nods and heads back up the stairs leisurely.

He goes to Aaron's room and finds the bed stripped and a backpack and suitcase still packed on the ground.

He returns to his room to find Aaron already setting the bedding from the spare guest room on the ground there. Andrew doesn't say much about it, "Dinner is ready." is all he says before turning and heading back downstairs.

He hears Aaron scramble after him.
