You can ask for more diverse autistic representation in media and criticize the current without making fun of the "stereotypical" traits autistic characters show because, you know, many of us do have these traits. And we're not faking it, and we are not stereotypes, and our traits and interest are not something to be ashamed of.

Okay no look Abed is not just autistic, he definitely has comorbid mental health issues. I mean he is canonically described as having psychotic breaks, we see several of these, and also he has serious abandonment issues and goes to extreme lengths analysing and worrying about relationships. That stuff definitely overlaps and connects with autism but it isn't explained by that alone. Also you could reasonably argue for a learning disability like dyscalculia. And you know what, it's good representation that not every symptom he shows can be explained by autism. Most autistics have something else on top. Especially considering the increased social rejection and mistreatment. It feels very real, and I don't think it's fair to reduce it to just autism. From personal experience, when people try to do that in real life, it means possible strategies and solutions get ignored, and you get convinced every part of your suffering is just an intrinsic part of who you are. That you're destined to be this anxious, this stressed, this traumatised forever. And I know saying it about a fictional character doesn't actually do the same to anyone, but like. It's just not accurate, and it feeds into something that does hurt real people.

@ autistic folks!!! You need to watch "A Kind Of Spark". It's a new series about two autistic sisters and if witches are one of your hyperfixation/special interest, then this show is for you!!! The actresses are all autistic and it's just wholesome to see such an accurate autistic representation 🤍 Keedie, Nina and Addie are everything to me, I literally cried watching every episode. The portrayal of autistic women made by autistic women is so important I cannot put into words how much this means to autistic youth. I wish I would've had this representation when I was an undiagnosed autistic teen 🫶🏻 it would have helped me so much but even now, I felt like my inner child was healing. So yeah, WATCH A KIND OF SPARK !!! ✨️✨️
Also, I truly believe that witches were autistic women

I see so much autistic Regulus in ffs but it's always used as a quirky character trait and never really as a disorder with actual consequences. Yes to stimming, but also yes to meltdowns. Yes to apathy, but also yes to sensory hypersensitivity. Yes to special interests, but also yes to crying at every single inconvenience. Yes to rambling, but also yes to processing issues. Yes to difficult communication, but also yes to constant and uninterrupted speaking to himself when he's alone. Yes to saying he's autistic, but also yes to showing it.

I don't know if I'm explaining this well enough but one reason I think representation is so important is because it helps people explain what they're going through. Like for example being autistic sometimes it's really hard to put in words what's bothering me and sometimes my issues feel too small or I just can't explain and I know there are loved ones who genuinely are trying to understand me. Like now when I need to explain things I can just idk show them an ep of heartbreak high, show they quinni saying that she plays by everyone's rules 24/7 all the time and why it's so hard. It becomes so much easier to explain now. And I am so so grateful for it and I can't wait for more

At least a face like this will make people think twice before making snap judgments about what I am. It’s harder for someone to pin you down as a girl when they need a moment to pin you down as human.
I want to peel off all my skin, if only so I could be anything other than a naked body, something horrifying instead of vulnerable. Nobody looks at a pig corpse and thinks it could be made beautiful.
If you liked Hell Followed with Us (that's where the first quote is from!), then go read The Spirit Bares its Teeth
Victorian thriller, ghosts and gore, basically Poe-vibes
Absolutely fantastic trans & autistic MC
Lotsa disturbing imagery and surgical metaphors
T4T!
Anti-establisment themes aka fuck the system

love it when the autistic experience of not fully belonging anywhere and always being on the fringes of whatever community you find yourself in. of masking to belong even slightly and still knowing that you don’t really Belong and that the people you surround yourself with Don’t Really Care about you and being the butt of a joke you don’t understand and being in your own little bubble, not as a safe space but as a result of being isolated from everyone else because no matter where you are you are autistic and you just can’t belong, is replicated in fandom spaces. in spaces for things you love and enjoy. love that so much

Also can we agree that actually the whole 'savant syndrome' thing is kinda fucked? Like yes, it's a real thing, but its linked with autism so much to the point where not being a genius makes people feel like they're 'not autistic enough'? I've already seemingly failed at being a normal person, the last thing I need is to fail at being autistic too.

No no no something that's really important and good about Abed is that he isn't a genius he doesn't know so many things not just social things he doesn't know how to read analogue clocks or make sensible financial decisions or get kool-aid stains out or tell when a wound is infected he doesn't seem to do badly but he's not a top student you can't even say he's a savant because although he gets really good at making movies he has to work at it a lot and yeah he has some great analytical skills and brilliant insights sometimes but that comes from hours and hours of obsession and pattern tracking please do not reduce my boy to the autistic genius stereotype because he is not that

Laios is autistic, absolutely, but I kind of want to say that I appreciate that his special interest is how monsters taste and how willing he is to try new foods. You see, I'm on the spectrum too and time and again I have felt a little like I was an imposter because I DON'T have texture issues with food. In fact like Laios, I want to try new things and their tastes and food is a special interest of mine. Part of it is because it's easy to talk about with people too. It just makes me feel happy because it emphasizes how much of a spectrum Autism really is.
