Another late post, but here is my current doll diorama on display! Same scene, but a few less dolls this year lol. This time it features my two "Barbie on a Budget" Haunted Beauty dolls (ghost and vampire), plus two witches (I always tend to use that redheaded one lol). I do intend to tackle the Haunted Beauty zombie at some point; I just have to figure out how exactly I want to go about it, and if I want her to have old/dirty clothes or do a different approach. :D And of course, my famous little jars of various potion ingredients are included! I love those things!

The Haunted Beauty collection is a Barbie series which is technically not Halloween themed, but might as well be. Released from 2012 - 2015, they were a series of collectors edition dolls designed by Bill Greening.
Tumblr media
Starting off the series was Haunted Beauty Ghost Barbie. In addition to her long gown, she is also wrapped in chains, evoking the spirit of Jacob Marley from A Christmas Carol. And presumably other ghosts, but when I think of ghosts in chains, that's where my mind goes.
Tumblr media
Next up was Haunted Beauty Vampire Barbie. I like her a little less; her gown is beautiful and possible more intricate, but I find her face design and hair a little lackluster. She's not bad, but she doesn't rise to the level of the other dolls in the collection.
Tumblr media
Haunted Beauty Mistress of the Manor Barbie is definitely one of my favourites from the collection. I love the inclusion of the book and candlesticks; I love the sinister vibes... and I love that she has a matching, non-spooky manor doll.
Tumblr media
In a one of a kind doll also created by Bill Greening, Tea at the Manor Barbie is what Mistress of the Manor looked like before she became a Haunted Beauty.
Tumblr media
Finally the series capped off with Haunted Beauty Zombie Bride Barbie, a Barbie bride with a sickly skin tone and red-dipped white roses in her bouquet. She is easily my second favourite in the collection, extremely closely behind Mistress of the Manor.

When you can't afford the Haunted Beauty Mistress of the Manor Barbie (2014) so you make your own... out of a doll you saved from the trash no less!
It was SO difficult to keep this set to just ten pictures, so there will definitely be a details and before-and-after post on the way.
Component parts and the story of this gal's months-long creation under the cut:
Head: 2015 Fairy Godmother Barbie (Helena Bonham Carter face sculpt), with face completely repainted and hair rerooted in extra-long kanekalon
Body: Tennis Player Barbie
Dress: made by modifying a Victorian wedding gown pattern by u/MyMisfits on reddit
Necklace: constructed out of ribbon and a nail charm
Boots: Barbie Fashionista boots repainted black
Book: new custom print made by me, book template by myfroggystuff on YouTube
Keys: key-shaped beads strung on a hair decoration loop
Candelabra: constructed from beads, wire, and q-tip sticks
Funny enough, this gal is the "sister" of my Christmas Tree Angel Barbie. I used the leftover body and head from this project's component parts to make that doll!
I knew I wanted to re-create this doll with my own spin for a long time, but struggled to find a base with the right face shape (the original has a special custom collector face mold that isn't found in regular Barbies...befitting a doll that retails for $800+). Then, one day one of my neighbors had a box of stuff marked "free" that was otherwise going in the trash can, and in it was a VERY worn-out and dirty Fairy Godmother Barbie. The face shape was perfect (after all, doesn't Helena Bonham Carter often play spooky roles like this?) so I cleaned up the doll, rid her of her matted old hair, painted a new face for her, and gave her a new poseable body.
I didn't just re-create the original doll's dress an accessories either; I tried to put my own details into them. That book is fully printed on the inside... I'll show off the text in a future post! I also had to give her my signature elaborate hair compared to the original's prim and proper bun.
This was months of work, including gathering parts, rerooting the hair, learning different sewing techniques, learning new prop construction techniques, and troubleshooting issues like the glue not setting on the candelabra pieces. This is one of my most elaborate customs and I'm very proud of the result.

Last year, I made a Barbie inspired by the Haunted Beauty ghost. This year, I did the same thing for the vampire! I call it Barbie on a Budget, because I'm not going to spend $300+ on a doll LOL :D I had this Barbie Basics doll in storage, and she looked perfect already with her dark red lipstick and matching fingernails and toenails. All she needed was clothes and accessories. I found a cheap dress on eBay - no idea what it's from or if it's even Mattel, since I don't see a tag - and a great cape on Etsy. I used the doll's original shoes, then found the teeny tiny bat charm on Etsy, attached it to a chain, and BOOM! We have a vampire Barbie! :D Her dress isn't as extravagant as the Haunted Beauty, and she doesn't have painted teeth or more than five points of articulation, but I'm pretty pleased with how she turned out. I can always add teeth later, but a lot of people say they don't like how Mattel adds vampire teeth lol so for now, we'll pretend they're behind her lips. :D

For the ask if Barbie has been a fantasy creature that isn’t a mermaid or a fairy: their are many angel Barbies, all the little half-animal kids in the Swan Lake movie line, an alien queen, a ghost and a few elves.
That is true - and now you mention it, in addition to those you mentioned, in the same line as the ghost was also a zombie and a vampire.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Plus the Twilight saga tie-in dolls also depict her as a vampire, but in a way that doesn’t feel true to the spirit of the ask.)
Depending on how you define your terms Barbie has also been a goddess various times, and there was a Medusa Barbie so she has also been a Gorgon.
Tumblr media
So there are a lot more than my original post gave credit for!

I hate that so many people just assume that if you don't hail G*rwig as the second coming of Christ you're antifeminist or at the very least a spoilsport who hates for fun and dislikes anything.
(A similar thought happens with one tsw*ft I also find)
Literally I knew nothing about her before she burst into my consciousness with Hot Takes like "you know what Little Women needed? to be more DISJOINTED and #RELATABLE" and "cottagecore style is a more Authentic vision of the 1860s than actual 1860s clothing."
I would like to go back to that blissful state of unawareness, but here she comes again with "BARBIE WAS THE FIRST-EVER FASHION DOLL. A SPECIFIC CORPORATION THAT NOW HAS MORE MONEY THAN GOD INVENTED DOLLS SHAPED LIKE ADULTS. DO NOT QUESTION THIS."
