They told a famous story about being abducted by space aliens. A new book says it’s really about racism

The story [Betty and Barney] Hill told would become arguably the most famous UFO abductee story ever. One historian said the Hills were the “Adam and Eve of alien abduction” stories. The couple’s tale was turned into a best-selling book and a movie starring James Earl Jones, and it has provided the template for nearly every depiction of an alien encounter in pop culture since.

A new book, however, claims that the story isn’t so much about aliens as it is about race. The Hills, an interracial couple who were also civil rights activists, told a story that reflected their growing disenchantment with the slow progress of thecivil rights movement, says the historian Matthew Bowman in “The Abduction of Betty and Barney Hill: Alien Encounters, Civil Rights, and the New Age in America.”

It's summer, so Barney and Valancy are on their island. Mrs. Kennedy would hate the Redferns. But the text implies she's still in Toronto, although realistically that's unlikely. Still, there's a chance for Robin to meet them.

Encounter on Route 3 (2017)

So, these three shots are loosely based on the most famous alien abduction case ever—the 1961 Betty and Barney Hill incident, which occurred on US Route 3 in New Hampshire. I know, I know, the car’s all wrong, but I couldn’t find an O scale ‘57 Chevy Bel Air. The 60’s Mustang was the best I could do, which, frankly, isn’t even close. And I have to admit the tail fins on the Bel Air would’ve looked cooler, but we work with what we have, right? On the plus side, the Mustang has articulated doors, and it’s a neutral off-white, so it picks up color well.

The Hill case, even 60+ years on, is still captivating and perplexing. Some of the details are just maddening and create just enough doubt to make one question the whole thing. I believe something traumatizing happened that night in New Hampshire, and I believe the Hills were telling the truth inasmuch as they understood what had happened to them. But I also believe that being an interracial couple in 1961 also played a role, but how and to what extent we will probably never know.

There's everything from the 90s oldies like Uncle Phil & Aunt Viv from The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, and Fran Fine & Mr Sheffield on the Nanny, and Cory & Topanga from Boy/Girl Meets World to couples of the 2000s like the infamous Chuck & Blair from Gossip Girl, or Nathan & Haley from One Tree Hill all the way to more modern couples like Cece & Schmidt from New Girl, or Cam & Mitch from Modern Family, or Beth & Randall from This Is Us.

Honestly it's just a fun video for us to talk about the couples that make our hearts sing and that we ship till our dying day, whether they lasted or not (cough cough Barney and Robin, HIMYM). At the end of the day even though we have some surprising pairings - you won't guess who we love from Bojack Horseman - we still made some really obviously choices; Meredith & Derek from Grey's Anatomy will always have our hearts! Monica and Chandler are the best thing to come out of Friends! And one of us is ready to die for Gallavich (Ian and Mickey were the BEST part of Shameless).

Shepherd’s Lantern

They vary a lot in appearance but a white tip to the tail is one marking most border collies have. It’s sometimes known as the shepherd’s lantern. 

I’m no shepherd but that white flash on the end of a border collie’s is certainly helpful when walking through the woods after dusk, without a torch. Flynn’s stripy face means he’s always easy to see from the front but from behind... not so much. His usually white legs get muddy & as he walks in a permanent slinky position, you often can’t see much - or any - of the white round his collar. His red-brown fur is like a deer - bright when out in the sun, but in low light, Flynn quickly fades into the background. That tail though, that stays bright & he holds it pretty steady as he trots along. It stays visible well after the path has disappeared into the gloom & by watching his tail bob along, you can tell if Flynn’s going up or down, left or right, giving a clue about where to walk. 

Flynn knows his way through our local woods & when the light drops, he sticks close to me & stays on the path. I trust him to lead the way & head for home, so I just follow the tail, through the mirk, until we find civilisation again. 

#apparently shepherds did the same thing with their collies when coming down from the hills in the evenings #you have to know your dog though - Flynn is pretty sensible about stuff & he is careful #I would NOT have trusted Barney not to lead us off a cliff in the dark #or to decide home was boring #so he'd rather go run amok on the hill instead & just go off trail #he's a fun dog but not one you want to follow blindly!!
