Litwick History
Tumblr media
Modern Litwick were first documented in the 1500s regions like Paldea, Unova, and Galar. At this time, their appearance was what we know of as today, but researchers show that Litwick goes a wee bit deeper than that.
While it's hard to pinpoint exactly where Litwick came from currently, they are distant relatives of the Ghastly line, with both of them being gasses that have ended up taking a solid form. Litwick's earliest known relative appeared to be a pokemon resembling a purple-bluish flame. While information on them is limited, researchers theorize that they hunted by luring prey away with their flames. This could also be the explanation for Will-ó-the-wisps, who were said to do the exact same thing. Their appearance stayed like this for a lot of history since it was a very good strategy for hunting. But, as the future will show us, it wasn't good enough.
In the 1500s, Litwick started to take on the appearance of candles, most likely so they could blend in with humans agriculture and help lure their victims away better. It worked, with many more people disappearing because of Litwick's trickery.
It wasn't until the 1930s, when the fear of ghost types started to die down a bit. Scientists were able to research Litwick and its line a lot better, learning the proper ways to care for one and how to avoid having your life force sucked out. Litwick breeding also became popular around this time, creating many variants of litwick. By this time as well, many people started using them more in pokemon leagues, boosting their ever-growing popularity. Now, much of the Litwick fear has died down and they're currently very popular ghost/fire types.

History Fact
In the 1700s, an anonymous writer traveled to Sinnoh, Alola, and Kanto to write fairy tales told throughout those regions. The books were known as, “Secret Blooming Land” about a Whimmsicott following a Shaymin into a secret fantasy land, “Mystic Song under the Moon” about a Primarina who finds a group of Clefairy and Umbreon and goes on a journey with them to give power to her songs, and “Shadows in Haunted Mansion” about a young boy who sneaks into a haunted house and gets tricked by a Gengar and other Ghost type Pokemon. The books became very popular and are still common fairy tales told by children to this day.

I found I still have footage from 2009 of when I helped study the Acid Rain glitch when it was first discovered in Pokémon Platinum, so I recorded it and posted it for posterity's sake:

Is it safe to feed my pokemon lemonade? I've seen other trainers giving lemonade to their pokemon but I'm not sure if that's healthy.
So lets have a quick history lesson.
Before Silph Co developed the universal potion, making medicines for pokemon was a difficult and specialized art, with a lot of pokemon requiring unique treatments. The herbal remedies pharmacists developed worked, but the bitter herbs didn't taste very nice and it was hard to get pokemon to take them.
So a lot of chemists started adding sitrus berry extract to make them more palatable. Over time this became standard practice for all but the most traditional medicines, and when the standard potions came out, many of the pharmacists who might otherwise have gone under came up with the idea of carbonating their potions and marketing them as "health tonics" instead.
Over time the health tonic part fell off as many trainers went "Is it just me or does my pokemons medicine kind of slap...?" and soon it was just sold as a drink to anyone, with the early marketing emphasising the fact it was a treat you could share with your pokemon.
Nowadays many companies follow the traditional formula, including Kanto Orchards, the first to market it as a health tonic. Their recipe has been unchanged bar the addition of bubbles for the last 80 years.
Not all lemonades are made equal, though. Check the ingredients. If it contains any kind of sugars or sweeteners at all its fizzy garbage water for kids and shouldn't go anywhere near pokemon unless you want them bouncing off walls. But a bottle of lemonade is a harmless treat for a pokemon, and for many can even work as a potion in a pinch.
I don't recommend humans drinking more than a standard bottle a day, though. An overdose of herbs will...go through you quite fast, if you get what I mean.

Tatsugiri were once considered a delicacy in Paldea, and were a favorite food of the nobility

In antiquity, there were three main groups who inhabited the Hisui region: the Celestic Civilization, Diamond clan, and Pearl clan. These three coexisted in harmony until a devastating natural disaster struck. It led to the collapse of civilization.
Over the centuries, each group tried to survive in the face of a cold and harsh land. To explain their suffering and find comfort in the unknown, each group developed a religion around a pokemon deity. The Diamond Clan in the Crimson Mirelands worshipped Dialgia, deity of time. The Pearl Clan in the Alabaster Icelands worshiped Palkia deity of space. The descendants of the Celestics, now called Highlanders due to their home in the Coronet Highlands, acknowledged the existence of Palkia and Dialgia, but stated that they were servants of a higher power named Arceus, creator of all.
These differences in religious belief led to conflict. Many wars were fought between the three clans. In the final war, the Diamond and Pearl clan banded together and razed the Highlander settlement to the ground. Many Highlanders were killed or enslaved. The few that remained fled into the depths of the Coronet range. There, they lived in hiding. During this time, they only interacted with outside traders who knew to keep their secret. Several Highlanders, seeking adventure, joined the trainers, returning home during the winter months.
Overtime, the Diamond and Pearl clan forgot about the Highlanders. The battles between them intensified. It wasn’t until 200 years ago that conflict ceased and peace was made. The Highlanders emerged and were welcomed by the Galaxy Expedition.
Today about 70% of Sinnoh’s population has ancestry from either the Diamond, Pearl, or Celestic/Highlander clans. Sinnoh is one of the most tolerant regions regarding religious expression due to its own past.

Worldbuilding Headcanons #10
part 2 of my pokemon league history! part 1 is here!
the kanto gym circuit quickly boomed and was proven to be a success. it helped tame the trainers who had no idea what they were doing and encouraged others who might not otherwise befriended a pokemon to try the whole thing out.
a man from galar, in kanto for business, saw all this and went hey... i can make some money off of this!
the kanto pokemon league was not there to make a profit. hell, the gym leaders weren't even paid at first! it was meant to be a volunteer position like the trial captains in alola, but it proved not to be as feasible in this scenario. the league survived off of partnering with businesses and receiving funds from advertising and selling their products in the gyms. beyond that, they didn't charge any trainer who came to them looking for help. gyms were meant to be replacements for schools after all.
the man didn't want anyone else getting money that could be his. when he went back to galar, he took the concept of the gym circuit but twisted it on its head. no longer was it education, but entertainment.
sports had, obviously, been around for as long as humans have. not much in the way of international leagues (travel was difficult then--most pokemon out in the open ocean or air didn't appreciate humans treading into their domains.) but there. there had even been sports involving pokemon, though they were considered something for the rich only.
no more, in the businessman's mind. instead of schools, he'd have stadiums. at the end, whoever won 8 badges would participate in a tournament to become standing champion of the galar region. none of that 'it's a rank'' stuff from kanto.
there was the problem of trainers not training their pokemon well enough, but it wasn't a problem for the man. in his mind, the threat of public humiliation in front of thousands would be enough to deter people from going in unprepared.
in the spring of 1932, as the snow thawed, the first galarian gym challenge was announced. only a few dozen people signed up that year, but the champion battle in wyndon drew crowds of thousands. the next spring, numbers quadrupled.

Hi, everyone! My name is Julie and I am the co-author of the Pokémon Center NY Historical Website, alongside my friend, Grace, who many of you may know as “mewisme700” (or that girl with the Pikachu car) from TikTok. Although I’ve been a collector of Pokémon merchandise for, basically, my entire life, I’ve been a gaming archivist and an expert in the digital event distributions at the Pokémon Center NY store for over 5 years now. These days, I’m the sole admin of our website (PokemonCenterNewYork.com), updating the site as new information is uncovered.
• My Linktree is here:
So, what’s going on?
In light of all the recent (chaotic) changes happening on Twitter, I’ve decided to make a Tumblr blog for my account for people to ask questions & learn info about the now-defunct Pokémon Center NY store that existed in NYC from 2001 - 2005. A lot of people have reached out to me over the years with all sorts of questions and personal stories, so I figured that this format may help people learn a bit about…
1. The accurate history behind the PCNY store
2. My research as an archivist & the process behind what I do
3. Other cool Pokémon things that I come across
Thanks for being a part of this new project with me! 😊

The voodoo doll pokemin was redesigned into Banette because they thought an impaled pokemon was too violent for kids. Although they never ended up changing the animation for Curse which was gonna be their signature move
Wow that's cool! I can definitely see why it wasn't used due to its shocking look!
Still with some of the mad designs of todays Pokémon I can see this one working with more modern audiences.

Shuppet and Banette History
Tumblr media
(Art by Azurane on Deviantart)
Shuppet are ghost type pokemon originating in Hoenn, first being documented officially in the Hoennese Edo Period (1600s). They were said to be teru teru bōzu (small little paper dolls) come to life, playing pranks on the children that would mistreat them when they were still dolls. The Shuppet of this era had a slightly different appearance, being white and having paper instead of cloth cover them.
It wasn't until the 1940s that things began to change. During this time period, a popular brand of toy known as "ragged monsters" came out, which resembled what we know now as Banette. These toys quickly grew in popularity, subverting the expectation of regular humanoid dolls and appreciating the more creepy side of toys. These dolls were shipped to many other regions, with hundreds to thousands of them being made. Different variants of them were made as well to fit many occasions, and they became the staple of alternative toys at the time. (While I wasn't alive at that time, my ma did take part in this craze and I do have some of these dolls she decided to pass onto me).
But, like any craze, the popularity soon died out, and many of the dolls were abandoned and thrown away.
After that happened, complaints about seeing these dolls move on their own began to circle the region. Parents would say that their kids would see these strange toys move in the night and stand at the foot of their bed , almost with a vengeful energy. These dolls were recalled as to not anger anyone and to do more research on them. After extensive studies, it was revealed that these dolls were pokemon and the evolution of shuppet. This was a surprise to most, especially with it being the evolution of Shuppet, who was thought to have a rare evolution unrelated to these dolls. These pokemon were then named Jupetta, or Banette for Galarian speakers.

Is it possible to collect Pokemon without the use of poke-balls by taming them naturally? Is there any benefit to doing it that way, Mr. Quil? Obviously, there had to be a time in the distant past where poke balls weren't available yet, so taming Pokemon via slowly building trust had to be a common practice at one point, right?
Yes, that is possible! The Diamond and Pearl clan in Hisui did it, and my mom does it all the time with the pokemon that come by her house. Pokeballs were made because it was easier to research pokemon that way, and they just kinda spread around the world.
