Seven aspects of the interior of the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary - aka Parish Church of Olhão. The temple itself started to be built in 1698, but the interior decoration and art are typically from the XVIII Century.

Live in it
Take it apart.
Or go deep. And live in it.
These are two of the best ways to truly know anything. Or anyone.
Focus on the little things. Learn the meaning of each part. See how they form the greater whole.
Or wear it. Live in it. Until it becomes like an old sweater. Or a favorite pair of jeans. A second skin that you know as well as your own. Until it feels off, almost unnatural, to not wear it.
The best way to truly know anything, or anyone? The both-and.
Take it apart. And go deep, live in it.
It’s the classic Catholic approach to positive goods. Don’t choose just one. Do both.
I bring this up, because in today’s Gospel, Jesus is giving us the Our Father. The Lord’s Prayer.
The most widely used – and least understood – of all prayers.
The reason it’s so badly understood isn’t that it’s a confusing prayer. Or that we’re not smart enough to get it.
It’s just that for most of us, we have it so well memorized that when we say it, it rolls right off us. Like water off a duck’s back.
That’s why I’m such a big fan of taking it apart. Unpacking it. To really understand it. To give it back the impact that Our Lord always meant for it to have. But that’s only half the story.
The other half? To go deep, to live in it.
That’s what today is all about, the Memorial of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary. Because that’s what the Rosary is all about.
It’s about going deep and living in the two classic prayers of our Faith. The Hail Mary. And the Our Father, the Lord’s Prayer.
The Rosary is all about understanding the prayers. And what the prayers tell us about God. On a level that’s only possible when we live in it.
Praying it until we know it so well that it no longer rolls off us. Praying it until it soaks in, into our bones.
And we find within us a place of peace. Because we’ve cleared out the clutter. Because there’s nothing in the way.
Because you prayed the Lord’s Prayer until it truly soaked in. Until it made a place in your heart for you to be with God.

Two side altars of the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary (also known as the Parish Church of Olhão): The Sacred Heart of Jesus and The Sacred Heart of Mary.
The gilded woodcarving altarpieces make this church look quite sumptuous (something rather strange, considering that, in the XVIII Century, Olhão was but an humble fishing village), but that is one of the most interesting tricks of the Portuguese Baroque: the amount of gold used to create these flamboyant altars is very, very small.
