Imagine Izzy and Jake competing for your affection.

You counted yourself and the boys lucky that Izzy just reported for the Bannon Bantams. If he’d played for them, well, he and Jake would have the cockfight of the century.

Izzy’d been disappointed when you’d opted for cheer squad instead of the newspaper. But you’d assured him the front row seats were worth it. He agreed, expression thoughtful.

Jake’d been psyched. Had even suggested the Bannon Banner do a feature. Which you shied away from, not wanting to kick off the season with resentful teammates. Of course, Jake had given Izzy shit. And continued to give him shit, all because of-

“-so much ink, huh? I’m serious, people are starting to think you’re sweet on him.”

Oh, Dante.

Izzy did write about him a bit. But that was mostly due to the reporter’s rivalry with Jake. How much messier it would be if Dante was thrown into the mix! Or if it was even just a love triangle with Dante. Izzy/You/Dante. Jake/You/Dante. Izzy/Dante/Jake.

Good thing, you figured, glancing everywhere but skyward, no one else was seriously interested in you or Dante or Jake-

“Really? I heard that was you.”

Time to step in. Bucky noticed you stroll up from behind before the other two did.

“There are no urinals… out here,” you greeted, gesturing at the vast farmland. “Why you all together?”

The team manager had already slunk off. Not because he didn’t like you. Bucky just found Jake to be more a cocksore loser around crushes. The jock at least looked slightly embarrassed. For a sec.

“Hey, ______.” Jake made no effort to conceal himself. “Caught me with my pants down.”

“Don’t turn around,” you teased. “Or get any ideas,” grumbled Izzy, pants zipped as he faced you.

“No, here’s one. Why don’t you write about a pretty girl for once?”

“What, I thought you were jealous I don't write enough about you?”

Their squabbling ceased after boarding the bus. The rivalry was still there, strong as ever, but Jake and Izzy at least sat far apart. The latter kept casting longing glances back. Dante was on the same side as you, but farther back. You could only imagine the shitstorm if you’d asked to sit next to the player with the most “ink.” Maybe he’d mediate.

Yeah, right.

A few glimpses into Rhonda’s compact mirror revealed Jake was also yearning. His eyes drifted between you and… Dante?

An image of you and him, lips locked, squeezed between Jake and Izzy popped into your head. The compact fell into your lap. You nonchalantly passed it back to Rhonda. Dante’s pretty face wasn’t likely to be within kissing distance anytime soon.

You had volunteered as a junior bus monitor for the elementary school, as part of a class. This experience came in handy when you begged Betty to let you help lay road flares. Anything to get away from crushes and admirers for a minute.

Unfortunately, Coach Hanna was spontaneously raptured and you, knocked onto your *ss after something smacked your ass, only narrowly avoided rolling out of the way after his flare dropped. You remained still. The others were talking, but the mounting horror was too distracting.

“______?!”

“I’m okay!”

Betty went to help while Barnes called out for the other coach. You shakily got to your feet. The driver continued to lay flares as she approached, before she too was ripped off the face of the earth. But not before the assailant made your rump smart again.

Note: Pluto TV kept glitching, so I couldn’t rewatch it completely. :(

The Savage Land is a hidden (under Antarctica's ice!) tropical preserve at the base of the Palmer Peninsula.

It's part of several such planetary zoos built by the Nuwali for the mysterious Beyonders...

This 1 is stocked with the prehistoric animal & plant life of 200 million years ago.

50 million years ago, the Nuwali had to augment the area's volcanoes to preserve it's tropical ecosystem.

They also supplemented the animal life with various early mammals - including 'Man-Apes!'

The Nuwali finally left Earth some 200,000 years ago...

Eternals lived here briefly.

Then, ancient Atlanteans colonized the Savage Land, exporting its animal life thruout their empire.

Their scientist-sorcerers imported magical creatures & expanded the Land's recreation/commerce center called Pangea.

Beast-Men were created by the Atlanteans & promptly enslaved!!

But, after a successful rebellion, they spread out into the preserve to find places to live in...

In 18,000 BC, an alien/mystic war resulted in the sinking of Atlantis!!

Velasco hid Beatrice under Mt. Flavius & tried to summon the Elder Gods there.

As Dante & Belasco fought, a pipe got hit - releasing some unknown gas!

It put Belasco into suspended animation, but, Dante & his men were mystically 'changed'.

In the 1800s, Atlanteans relocated to the waters surrounding Antarctica - as did Lemurian rebels...

By the 1940s, Nazis had built a hidden base somewhere in the South Pole.

After WW2, some high ranking Nazis escaped there, stumbling upon the Savage Land - & its high tech.

British Lord Plunder was the next to discover the Land - while looking for vibranium.

His 9 year old son was orphaned & raised by Zabu, a sabertooth tiger!!

He was renamed Kazar, "friend of the sabertooth cats."

Been around long enough to have seen all the alternatives fans thought of to fix Kurt's parentage and let me tell you: They're talking out of their asses. In 2022, they wanted to have Belasco be the father because "he's an Italian warlock and not a demon"... That's false. Belasco was transformed into a demon by the Elder Gods centuries ago. So not only is he a demon, his children would be as well (there's also the fact Kurt becomes Belasco sometimes which adds a layer of incest...)

Isn't Belasco quite literally based on the Demon from Dante's Inferno???

I'm sorry but this is hilarious they don't want Azazel to be his father because he may or may not be a Demon but they want BELASCO who is like a LITERAL Demon and looks very similar to Azazel sans the one arm being missing.

Yeah the Kurt becoming Belasco was Marvel's alternate universe were everything that looked similar was related or the same like how Colossus was also Mr. Sinister. Still even if that wasn't the case Belasco is already a very similar character to Azazel its just such a pointless change to make.

X-Men Abridged: Magik (1983)

The X-Men, those corrupted mutants that have sworn to protect a world that hates and fears them, are a cultural juggernaut with a long, tangled history. Want to unravel this tapestry? Then read the Abridged X-Men!

(Magik 1 - 4) - by Chris Claremont and John Buscema, Tom Palmer, Ron Frenz

If Magic the Gathering had been around in the eighties, I guarantee you that one of their cards would have had art like this. Goddamn this is some 80’s fantasy right here. (Magik 4)

Remember when the X-Men saved Illyana from Belasco and how they, due to a little mishap with portals and time working differently in Limbo, lost track of her for a few seconds and Illyana aged from a toddler into a teenager? This series explains what happened during that span of time in Limbo.

While I like the idea of this miniseries, I feel like this could have been two issues shorter. It’s basically Illyana doing a "Dante´s Inferno meets the Wizard of Oz", shopping around for a mentor and ruining the three people who try to guide her through her loss of childhood. What’s worse is that, other than filling in the blanks and showing that growing up has a price, it’s not really about anything. It lacks depth.

Let’s delve into it, shall we?

After Belasco snatches Illyana from Kitty’s hands, he wastes no time marking her soul for him. He plants a flag on her by creating a bloodstone from a piece of her soul:

Belasco is basically trying to rain down the wrath of his board of directors to promote him out of this hellhole. Epitome of mid-level management. (Magik 1)

Storm – that is, the alternative Storm who got stuck in limbo and who learned sorcery as her mutant powers waned with old age – goes on an astral journey to sever Illyana’s connection to the bloodstone, but she fails. She realizes Illyana already carries traces of the Darkchilde: the corruption has begun.

Belasco tries to kill off Storm, but she is saved by the one alternative X-Man that hasn’t shown up in Limbo yet. (Colossus and Wolverine died, Nightcrawler was corrupted into being Belasco’s servant and Storm kept on fighting the good fight, but where was Kitty?)

Kitty has grown up into the nearly-feral Cat, an uneasy ally of Storm. She will always love her former teammate, but she doesn’t trust the sorceries Storm dabbles with, because that magic is part of the fabric of Limbo, part of Belasco. When Storm and Cat regroup in Storm’s garden and Storm shares that she wishes to train Illyana in the arcane arts, Cat’s reaction makes sense:

Cat would rather kill Illyana than tempt her with sorcery, but Storm decides to ignore her and tutor Illyana. She teaches her the basics of magic: hidden in Belasco’s realm, which is all Fisher Kingly, Storm managed to eke out a garden that is impervious to his magics. Illyana slowly learns wield Storm uses hers.

One year of training later, Cat seizes her moment and knocks out Storm to lure Illyana away from her. Cat promises to deliver her home, to her timeline and her X-Men, if Illyana does as she says. Illyana decides to follow her. Before Cat can make the attempt to make Illyana click her heels three times, however, Illyana needs training. Storm tries to claim Illyana back, giving Cat an astral cold call, but Cat tells Storm that she’ll need to kill her if she wants Illyana back. Storm is unwilling to resort to that last measure.

Where Storm was nurturing and patient, Cat’s cruel tutelage is a lot like Wolverine’s would be: tyrannical, strong, unrelenting. She trains Illyana in the badlands of Limbo, having her fight with S’ym and killing sabretooth tigers. It’s all very Conan the Barbarian. Despite their hardships, the two become friends. After three years, Cat and Illyana climb Belasco’s citadel, where they are intercepted by Limbo!Crawler. Together, they kill him, even though Illyana can’t help but remember the Nightcrawler she knows and loves.

In the citadel, Cat uses her phasing powers to phase through dimensions (WTF, Kitty, why has your power never evolved to this), but instead of ending up at the base of the X-Men, they end up smackdab in Belasco’s court.

Fuck.

Pray for mercy from… Puss! In Boots! (Magik 2)

Sadly, we don’t get a montage of Cat acting like a Cat (sneaking up on Belasco just as he concocting something in his potion kitchen; shoving glasses off the edges of spiked hell tables, etc.) Instead, Illyana, under Belasco’s influence, summons the second bloodstone. (There should be five in total, but when we see Illyana in the present, she only has three. One bloodstone to go.)

We get a small timejump and Illyana is now fully Belasco’s apprentice, awed (in all senses of the word) by her master. Cat has become a murderous, dangerous creature: there’s nothing left of Kitty, as evidenced when she tries to kill Illyana for botching a spell.

In the privacy of her own room, Illyana tries to craft an acorn, like she’s seen Storm do. But…

The homage to Little Nemo in Slumberland has got to be intentional, right? (Magik 3)

Apparently, the distress of failing at her magic has caused Illyana’s mutation to trigger. It’s never made explicit why Belasco picked Illyana specifically for this scheme, but I think it might have to do with the fact that she can teleport through Limbo. Her innate connection with the dimension might have made her a perfect conduit for Belasco’s Ancient Ones.

Or he just likes needlessly complicating his life by snatching the sister of an X-Man, who knows.

After Illyana figures out she can control the teleportation disks, she returns to Belasco, but at a different time. It’s the moment where a young and strong Storm chose the most ill-advised outfit for anything ever and confronted Belasco on her own.

He who gazes into the abyss… Or, nowadays: look not too long at TikTok, lest TikTok take a good look at you! (Magik 3)

Too bad that in Limbo, Belasco is immortal. The Belasco Storm killed? Actually her own innocence, murdered. Oops.

Illyana shifts back to the present where a decidedly less horny Storm is attacking Belasco’s citadel to help Illyana. Illyana seizes the opportunity to teleport S’ym plenty of miles away, finally having a weapon she can use. While Storm confronts Belasco, Illyana is attacked by Cat.

She kills her former friend, driving the final nail in the coffin of her innocence.

Heh. Catfight. (Magik 3)

I’m not sure if this scene deters Illyana/Kitty-shippers or encourages them. Anyway.

Belasco has injured Storm when Illyana arrives on the scene. He means to strip Storm of her soul as the most severe punishment possible, since she has regained her goodness and/or has shaken off his corruption, someone no one has ever done! (Also setting precedence for Illyana hopefully shaking off Belasco’s influence at some point.) Sensing that Illyana is turning more and more to the dark side, Belasco compels her to finish this unholy ritual.

Instead, Illyana stabs a knife through Storm’s heart, killing her and saving her soul. Belasco… doesn’t take it well.

Illyana, knowing when to bail the fuck out of there, teleports to Storm’s garden. But now that Storm is dead, it has withered. There’s no safe havens left in Limbo – Illyana has killed them all. She flees again, teleporting all the way back home to mother Russia.

The ghoul X-Men are a really early commentary on the fact that none of these mutants will ever stay the fuck dead. (Magik 4)

You can’t go home again, even if you click your ruby slippers really, really hard. If you read this as a twisted sort of Wizard of Oz or Alice in Wonderland, which it is obviously borrowing from, you could see how Belasco gave her a brain (arcane knowledge), Cat gave her courage and Storm gave her a heart. But there’s no good witch to zap you home: Illyana has to do all on her own.

Anyway, turns out even Illyana’s parents were an illusion by Belasco. He proceeds to exile Illyana to Limbo (literally), all disappointed by her. Ordinarily I would accuse him of bond villain stupidity, but this dude is

Immortal

Amused by the antics of people in pain because he's literally an expy of the devil

so I’ll give him a pass.

Illyana finds refuge in the oak that was once the center of Storm’s garden, the only living thing that did not wilt away. She tries to grow the garden anew, drawing on Storm’s and Belasco’s lessons, but each time, the acorns wilts away into black squalch. It’s like me trying to revive my LiveJournal, even though I'm no longer an angsty teenager.

FInally, the oak perishes, its energy drained.

As my yoga teacher often says: “Meditation and self-acceptance are all well and good, but sometimes, you just have to bury a hatchet in some guy’s foot.” (Magik 4)

It’s the X-Men’s Excalibur: the Soul Sword!

Armed with the sword, Illyana immediately takes the fight to Belasco. This time around, it’s not a fair fight. Oh, at all. Illyana backs him into a corner, but as she does, they both change. Belasco turns progressively more human, while Illyana…

I know you´d jeopardize your soul, but look how rad you look with that tail and horns! Slay him, Illyana! SLAY HIM (Magik 4)

By not defeating Belasco, Illyana defeats Belasco: she does not fall to temptation, she does not sacrifice all of her innocence. Belasco flees, leaving Illyana with a medaillon that now (after that final ordeal) has three bloodstones.

It becomes a crossroads. Illyana can stay and attempt to turn Limbo into a paradise, only to eventually face Belasco to an uncertain outcome, or she can return home. This time, she does sort of click her heels three times: she follows the way Cat has showed her, somehow returning to the moment where Kitty lost grasp of her. Since she already got a taste of what her parents would say if she visited them, she chooses to stay with Xavier and the New Mutants.

(I have no clue how she and Piotr avoid telling her parents the truth for such a goddamn long time, but whatever. Long distance actually meant something in the 80’s, I guess.)

So, Illyana leaves Limbo, ironically leaving her Limbo-storyline in, er, limbo. It’s going to be a good long while before this gets picked up again, but hey! At least we have more Limbo’s skimpy dresscode to look forward too. (Hi, Alex!) Til then!
