Ficlet below the cut!
1962
Primo [Irving Robert Olson] was born at the New York City Chapel of the Satanic Church of the Void in 1953 to Sister Nance and Brother Nihil. He and his mother left the Church in 1960. Looking back, the fact that his half-brother Secondo was born the following year was probably a strong factor in Nance's decision.
The world wasn’t designed at all for a single parent household. His mother Nance did what she could to be there, but it was hard making ends meet as a poet and freelance writer so she was often out late, teaching at the nearby college or researching for the occasional newspaper gig. Nance would date other men but none stuck around, especially when they had strong opinions about her son. She preferred being alone anyway.
Primo early on learned to take care of himself, and to understand that she couldn't really attend all the bake sales, meetings and neighborhood events like the rest of his classmates.
He would ride his bike home easily enough, over the train tracks, quickly past the kids shooting bottles off of the rails with bb guns. Primo was the heaviest kid of his age group, and the other boys delighted to remind him of that. (He also was the strongest kid so they kept a healthy distance from him when they started crowing about his weight as he rode past.) He would arrive at the house soon after the train track gauntlet, parking his bike by the front yard vegetable garden. The key would always be under the mat and a sandwich in the fridge just for him. If Nance would be home past five o’ clock there would be a note for him with a silly doodle by the phone.
Primo had a big imagination, but he was never interested in books. The two things he really enjoyed was his portable turntable and the television. He had the entire week’s programming memorized and luckily Nance wasn't around right after school to chide him about too much of it rotting his brain.
One of his favorite programs (besides the Lone Ranger) was a sitcom entitled Father Knows Best. On the afternoons it was on, Primo would scoot up too close to the television, twisting the volume knob until it would not crank any further. He even dared to eat his sandwich right in the living room, the plate balanced on his lap. No one but the bronze Baphomet sculpture on the side table ever witnessed his small acts of defiance. But it was a little ritual that he enjoyed as the music swelled and that familiar house with the white picket fence appeared on the screen.
He felt odd watching it, like he was spying through the window of a classmate’s house. Trying to understand the ins and outs of this perfect family and their small dramas. Often he imagined the television screen was a window to an aquarium, a zoo exhibit featuring a rare organism. Sometimes he felt it was the smiling figures on the screen that were the real people, and he himself was the creature in the enclosure. Those were not very good days.
At the end of each episode Father would strike a dapper figure, poised against the stiff gray couch, wearing an equally stiff but smart suit even in his own home. He'd thoughtfully put his pipe to his lips, nodding at his son standing sheepishly in the middle of the living room. “Now I suppose, Bud, that today you’ve learned the importance of telling the truth,” he would chide smoothly. His voice would keep a manly tenderness despite his scolding. “And because you didn't tell the truth today, you lost the money that you were planning on buying Barbara’s birthday present with.”
“That's the pits, isn't it,” Primo said out loud, half to himself and half to the bronze Baphomet nearby.
But like the namesake, Father always knew best, and the son would get a few new dollar bills, a playful rifling of his hair and an order to go out and play. THE END, announced the title card, and the music would wash across Primo sitting in the living room alone.
“Is Mister Walter coming back this weekend?” Primo expertly captured another one of Nance’s Sorry pawns. It was evening and the two of them were doing their usual after dinner bonding time. It was fun to chat and play board games with his mother, but Primo secretly enjoyed them better when there were three people playing.
“Mr. Walter…hated cats,” Nance muttered through her cigarette. Apparently a lot of them hated cats. Primo thought it odd this was a hard limit for Nance since they had never owned a pet bigger than a goldfish.
“He was alright,” said Primo. “He liked watching TV with me.”
“TV rots your brain,” Nance replied. “Have you been enjoying Robinson Crusoe?” She had gifted the book to him for his birthday and had subsequently planted it in strategic locations to encourage him to read it. He kept reading the first page, getting confused, and then putting it down.
“TV makes sense.”
“Yeah, of course it does. Take a plot, throw it in the mixer and then drink it up. I once got offered a job writing one of those family bilgefests and turned it right down.” Nance had forgotten they were playing the game. She tapped her nail on the table. “You're smarter than that, Irving.”
“Mom, it's your turn,” reminded Primo. He stared hard at the game in front of them. “There was a good Father Knows Best episode today. Bud lost the money for Barbara’s birthday gift.”
“Father Knows Best?” Nance’s neat ponytail twitched. “Irving, you know best.” She moved her piece and collected one of her son’s pawns off the board. “Sorry.”
Primo started to feel her seething agitation, although he knew it was never about him. “Are you…thirsty?”
“Are you offering?” Her small elfin smile started to emerge. “Shall we split a Coke?”
Primo nodded and obediently went to the icebox, grabbing one from the door. He pulled out two glasses and carefully emptied the bottle into them, stooping and staring with intensity as he ensured the Coke was perfectly divided between them. He returned from the kitchen, fully smiling now, and handed one to her. Nance did a silly toast and then they clinked glasses.
Nance sighed and ruffled her son’s hair. “I'm sorry this is hard. But it's necessary. You'll understand soon. This world is full of idiots who wait for things to happen, and it never comes. Who expect things to go a certain way. Who think someone else knows what's best.”
Primo suspected she must have had a rough day. She was usually cheerful, quippy and energetic but today she gloomily tapped the ashes from her cigarette into the crystal ashtray and stared at the Baphomet across the room. At last she sipped her glass and waved her hand around.
“But all of this? All mine. I made this happen. I did it. And I'm not holding my hands out at the sky either. I'm grabbing what I want with my fist.” Nance's face softened. “And I love sharing it with you, son. I choose to share it with you.”

Chicago Things I’ve Experienced that give TWST boy energy
Cw// uh shit you find in urban cities, swearing, chaotic behavior, light bullying of my hometown and also the boys
Tumblr media
Riddle: I went to the library when I was like 12 and a lady yelled at me about my jacket that had a lyric on the back (I did not know her. She went on a rant about keeping my image clean and not doing free advertising for people I don’t know. Very strange I cried afterward)
Ace: saw a guy wearing the different patterns. One was neon tie dye, one was checkered pattern, and the other was like a gradient background with palm leaf pattern on it. He was also wearing socks with sandals and really stupid sunglasses
Deuce: going to the museum of science and industry into the cloning exhibit and having to listen to 20 small children ask where the chicks (baby chickens) come from (cloning)
Cater: walking down the street and running into some asshole taking pictures of the building in the middle of the fucking sidewalk.
Trey: the roughly 10 million donut shops in Chicagoland area that all claim to be the best. The best is dorite donuts or firecakes but every mom and pop place thinks they have the corner market on overly sweet fried dough
Leona: the bus driver that looks like he’s slept 3 hours in the past week and has definitely run over someone glaring at me while I try and pay for my ride
Ruggie: ex coworker of mine being given popcorn by a guest (“They said they didn’t want it”) and proceeding to eat it. I suspect this popcorn was dropped on the ground and that’s why they didn’t want it but it remains a mystery to this day
Jack: saw two people get off of the bike path to bike on the highway. This is very illegal and very dangerous, please do not do that.
Azul: mafia tours. Chicago literally has so much mafia history that we take tourists on TOURS of the city to go see old crime spots.
Jade: me telling everyone not to swim in the lake and being ignored until I tell them about lampreys in the lake, then people want to listen.
Floyd: Floyd is literally so Chicago vibes I don’t know if I can narrow it down. I’m gonna say riot fest being banned from a park because of property damage but in reality it’s just the whole city he would love it here
Kalim: Lincoln park zoo. Just like as a whole
Jamil: calling it “the bean” because fuck Anish Kapoor :)
Vil: the Magnificent Mile that is decently impressive and actually 1.3 miles. He would love the overpriced food and clothes
Rook: that time the archerfish at the Shedd aquarium spat on me not once, not twice, but four times. Stop hunting me you fucking fish that’s so fucking rude I am not a BUG.
Epel: the cow tunnels going through the city and also the fact that we just built roads on top of each other since we’re slowly sinking into the swamp we’re built on
Idia: Chicago formerly being the candy capital of the world long, long ago. We actually still have a lot of candy places here and Idia would probably adore getting a 15 pound bag of sour patch kids :)
Ortho: the fact that Greek town smells like chocolate half the time. This is because of the chocolate factory, Blommers, that is still in town and in production! Ortho would enjoy simply knowing it smells nice
Malleus: malleus is making friends with every gargoyle in town, except for Defiance and Prowl in front of the art institute, which are not gargoyles and he will be informing everyone who has that misconception about it.
Lilia: the guy that tried to cross Lake Michigan in a giant red hamster ball. Twice. He was retrieved unharmed both times
Sebek: the chance the snapper incident many moons ago
Silver: the people who sleep on public transport. I’m terrified of them how do you know when to wake up?? How do you know when to get off the bus??

Do you happen to know what subspecies of wolf is/are in Zephyr's ancestry? Were/are there any wolfdog endeavors that focused on particular subspecies of wolf? Is there any documentation of dog x assorted wolf subspecies crossings?
It occurred to me that this was possible and then I needed to know LOL
I do! I have her lineage going back into the 1950's. She's a mix of several subspecies, but primarily 2 -- Eastern Timber & British Columbian, coming from the Matz Fur Farm, Bear Country drive thru zoo, and Folsom Zoo (which burned down, but had animals from the LA Zoo and Defiance Zoo).
The less influential subspecies in her pedigree includes small amounts of Alaskan Tundra/Mckenzie Valley from the Davidson Fur Farm, a splash of Arctic from the stock that Rick Halvorson got from the Stanley Park Zoo & Aqualand Zoo, and a pinch of Siberian wolf from an F1 50% that was imported back in the late 1950's from Russia that was crossed down to dog and then that 25% bred back to several pure wolves to create the Gordon K Smith lines.
Subspecies doesn't play a huge part in wolfdogs now a days because most are so intermingled and don't have one single subspecies in the mix anymore, as well as people now a days just don't seem to care about pedigrees as much for some reason? Back in the 70's and 80's it was easier to find animals with just one or two subspecies in the mix, but over the decades, those lines were crossed to preserve genetic diversity.

Monterey Bay Aquarium Has A Classism Problem
I was planning on visiting the Monterey Bay Aquarium for my birthday in a couple weeks, but when I finally got around to checking out the website to see admission prices, I was heartbroken to discover that adult admission is a full capital S $60. If you investigate the admission FAQ, they put heir foot down that they do not offer discounts of any kind; not for special occasions or for EBT recipients, such as myself. Their defense for this absurd pricing is that they are a non-profit organization. Here’s why that’s a load of shit:
The Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium is a one-of-a-kind facility in the PNW, in that it is a combined zoo and aquarium. The park is run by Metro Parks Tacoma, which is part of Pierce County’s government. Among other things, they support conservation effort and community programs. The red wolf population went extinct in the wild, but intervention by the PDZA’s captive breeding program helped to restore the red wolf to the wild. Not a small undertaking. PDZA features two aquariums, but one--the south pacific aquarium--is down for renovations. Two separate aquarium facilities, not including the aquatic avian and mammal habitats.
For all of this, an adult can expect to pay $20 per visit. Memberships, which allow for free admission for a year and gift shop discounts, are $90 for one adult. But if you are an EBT recipient, that very same membership is only $40. For $40, you could visit the PDZA 365 times.
At the MaST Center Aquarium, where I volunteer at, we teach college-level marine biology classes in association with Highline Community College, and are open to the public on Saturdays from 10am-2pm. We participate in the marine mammal stranding program, as well as leading beach exploration for K-12 students. We also participate in co-science projects, such as the Dungeness crab larval study. How much is admission? It’s free. Highline College is part of CTC; an association of non-profit community and technical colleges in the PNW.
The Seattle Aquarium features exclusively local marine life. It’s about the size of the pacific seas aquarium at PDZA, if not larger. Like the others, they contribute to science; most notably, their investigations into the local bluntnose sixgill shark population. How much is admission? $30. Discounts are offered for CityPass holders, people with disabilities ($2 off, which is flimsy, but it’s something), veterans, and more.
The Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport charges $26 for general admission. Foster children can visit six times for free, anyone can visit for free on their birthday, and veterans get 10% off, among others. The aquarium is large, and features a massive tank with several broadnose sevegill sharks, dozens of leopard sharks, and dozens of spiny dogfish. They also have a sizeable aviary, touch tanks; you name it. It’s not a small operation.
That is our benchmark.
So when we pan south to Monterey Bay, we can see how atrocious the pricing is. This high price tag for admission keeps low-income people out, and ensures only those of greater means get to see the sea life. Frankly, I am extremely disappointed with the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s high paywall. I expected them to be more charitable, but there it no charity to be found here. The only thing i can commend them for is their excellent social media outreach.
So, @montereybayaquarium, I hope you read this. And I hope you do better. much better. I will not be visiting; not until you all learn to stop being so greedy. Not until visiting becomes affordable.
$60?! Really?!

Seattle Pt. 3 (Last Day in Washington State)
Chihuly Chihuly Chihuly.... the glass artwork is truly so inspiring. We even we there in time to watch some artists do a glass blowing demo live, they made an incredible vase right in front of our eyes from a glob of molten glass. Art is life, life is art!!
After being surrounded by all of these masterpieces, we were given a short tour of where Jess's aunt used to live and a stop to see the city skyline from Kerry Park. A small little spot with A LOT of views to offer!
After soaking in as much Seattle as possible in 2 short days it was time for a final lunch and libations. Von's 1000 spirits treated us well with great food and an even better time. After saying farewell we boarded the ferry home with tired eyes...but thankfully open wide enough to see Mount Rainier peek her head through the clouds just to say thanks for visiting it was great to see you!!
Thank YOU Mount Rainier, Seattle WA, Aunt Jennifer, Port Defiance Zoo, Ruby & Rialto Beach, Forks WA, Olympic National Park: (Hurricane Ridge, Hoh Rainforest, Lake Crescent, Dungeness Bay), Port Angeles WA to name a few people places and things :)
As states go Washington really gave us everything we wanted, needed and didn't know we should have! Can't say thank you enough to all who have helped make this dream of a honeymoon become a reality!!!! Family friends and folks along the journey have been nothing but amazing, obviously a hiccup here or there but overall the country is friendly and welcoming. And everyone should try to get out and see the vastness and nature that is hidden around every corner. Take the by ways, stop at the worlds largest anything, take a detour for coffee, burgers and general fun. As Jess always says from one of her Podcasters, Alie Ward of Ologies; Cut your bangs, text your crush, we're all gonna die someday!

Encyclopedia Brown thoughts: book 22
Encyclopedia Brown and the Case of the Slippery Salamander
General:
This book is dedicated to the memory of Rebecca Blackwell, who died before her second birthday. :,(
The Case of the Slippery Salamander:
What, no references to Idaville's banks and delicatessens? :)
Maybe it's just me, but a reptile/amphibian exhibit seems more suited to a zoo than an aquarium. Making matters worse is the fact that The Case of Bugs’s Zebra establishes that Idaville has a zoo.
Now I'm imagining a case where someone steals a $300 ferret from a pet store, and is given away when he claims to be an expert on "ferrets and other rodents."
The Case of the Banana Burglar:
I wonder if Bugs willingly signed up for Art in the Park out of a genuine interest in art, if he signed up to make trouble, or if his parents made him sign up.
I love Bugs' chutzpah here with his "All I've eaten today is a lousy banana" remark. ^_^
Does Monsieur LeBlanc have a real name, or is his first name Monsieur?
If I were Pablo, I wouldn't want my job back, considering how much of an asshole Monsieur LeBlanc is.
The Case of the Dead Cockroach:
Scorpions are arachnids, so they probably shouldn't be competing in an insect race.
Um, @brownencyclopedia, you know that the roach is Bugs' freakin' pet, right? Sure, he's just using it to frame Encyclopedia for killing it, but still. :P
I've never seen a real roach, but if I did, I don't think I'd be learning anything about how they look when they die... of natural causes, that is. ;)
The Case of the Roman-Numeral Robber:
Charlie is ten, and he doesn't know what Roman numerals are? o_O
Whatever happened with the real Roman-Numeral Robber? Personally, I would have had Mr. von Martin turn out to have been the Roman-Numeral Robber all along.
Uh, Sobol, you do know that jewelers presumably know how to use Roman numerals correctly when not making watches, right? After all, even watches with IIII in place of IV don’t have VIIII in place of IX.
In addition to watches, tower clocks also usually use IIII instead of IV. Just thought I'd mention it.
The Case of the Runaway Judge:
A rose grower from Bloomington... yes, yes, very clever, I'm sure.
By "garden mazes," do they mean hedge mazes or something else?
Awfully convenient that Roberta Garnet happened to be the winner... or did Ms. Wedgwood just pick her because she could easily encode her name? I can't seen her being able to encode, say, Karyn Meyers or Alexander Findlay so easily.
The Case of the Peacock's Egg:
So, is it Wilford who doesn't know that peacocks don't lay eggs, or does he just assume his customers won't? I'm leaning toward the latter.
The Case of the Umpire's Error:
Interesting how both teams have alliterative names. I hope that Idaville is only the "Indians" because Sobol couldn't think of anything else that started with I.
That being said, I'd probably be rooting for the Porpoises, if only because I like dolphins.
On a related note, is there really any difference between a porpoise and a dolphin?
If I were an umpire, I wouldn't want to be polite to a crowd that were being total assbutts to me. But that's probably why I'm not an umpire.
The Case of the Calculating Kid:
It really doesn't seem to me that Encyclopedia and Sally randomly ducked into the convention center, but that they knew that the boat and fishing show had set up there and decided to go there to beat the heat.
"Yacht" is a funny word. Sorry, just had to bring it up.
Shells and More Shells isn't just a "company that sold seashells". For one thing, they aren't a company, but just a booth, and they also sell shell-decorated objects. That being said, the name does sound kind of fakey, so I would be suspicious of them, although not for the reasons that @brownencyclopedia is.
Amazing Grace is kind of a stupid name for a yacht, IMHO. What's worse is that Sobol had come up with at least two cooler yacht names - Coral Reef (The Case of the Pirated Yacht) and Defiance (The Case of the Blond Wig) - before this.
"These are" Mr. and Mrs. Hinton, not "This is," dammit! And Chief Brown is supposed to be smart?
What kind of tricks can you play with a calculator?
Lucky that Kent was able to recognize the face of the Shells and More Shells guy. I probably wouldn't be able to, not would I have had the presence of mind to enter "577345" into my calculator to finger my kidnapper. So I like this kid!
Seriously, though, "Shells and More Shells" sounds only slightly more believable than "Alkali Products Incorporated" from The Great Brain Reforms.
The Case of the Presidential Auction:
I’m sorry, but Gwendolyn doesn’t seem any different from Winslow Brant. Why is it wrong for her to do basically the same thing as him? Is it because Winslow is Encyclopedia’s friend, or because Gwendolyn is a teenager?
It should be Harry S Truman, without the period, because his middle name was just the letter S.
The Case of the Stolen Surfboard:
Final appearance of Benny Breslin, and good riddance.
Is this the same heat wave from The Case of the Calculating Kid?
Todd and Garth Breslin return, with the exact same description as in their first appearance. -_-
Why doesn't the lifeguard get a name if Benny knows him?

Happy Birthday to ME!
This year I’m far from home with no family or friends nearby so... I spent the day alone... Best Birthday I’ve had in years.
None of these pictures are anything groundbreaking... except it’s me behind the camera! And that makes me very happy.
Tumblr media
Went to the Tacoma Defiance Point Zoo.
Here we see the beautiful and majestic tiger, stalking his prey...
Tumblr media
... yes, he ate a lot of grass while I was there. This cat’s definitely getting enough fiber in his diet.
Tumblr media
Most of my aquarium pictures are filled with reflections.
Tumblr media
After the zoo I enjoyed the 5 mile driving path through Defiance Point park.
There were several signs reminding visitors NOT to feed the animals, but apparently these guys can’t read.
Tumblr media
I took generic photographs from clearly marked photograph points, like a typical tourist. Discovered the limits of my camera (I didn’t buy the phone for the camera, I bought it for the phone.)
Tumblr media
Lovely as the view of Puget Sound and Narrows Bridge is, it reminded me that I haven’t seen the actual ocean yet. So, being alone and thus, free, I put some gas in the car and drove three miles to the closest beaches beyond the sound.
Behold! The Pacific Ocean!
Tumblr media
Real waves were cresting out there, the big ones got a couple feet high. I’ve never seen that in person before.
Tumblr media
And when I stuck my feet in the water -not ice cold like I’d expected but lovely summer cool- I turned around and took this shot.
Tumblr media
Old growth forests are so cool.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then I spent the next three hours driving home in the rain as it got dark, listening to an audiobook on surgical history that’s too graphic for any of my friends or family to be interested, but I had a grand old time.
