Study with new coloured pencils and grey paper - Derwent Lightfast on Strathmore Toned Gray.
I read great things about Derwent Lightfast and as my birthday was coming up, I knew what I wanted. And, Voila! This is my first work using them. They are very different than the Faber-Castell Polychromos I normally use. Lightfast are soft and layer/blend in a completely different way. Due to their softness, they need to be sharpened often and doing fine details is hard as the point breaks easily. It will take some time getting used to them, but I do like them a lot. I think they will work great together with the Polychromos. One brand for details, the other for blocking in and highlights. Time to experiment more!

Hey ! Just discovered your blog, I'm in love with your art 💜
May I ask what you use to line your drawings (looks like coloring pencils ? I'm looking for a waterproof brand), and what pencil do you use for inking ? Thanks a lot !!
hi :) thank you 💖
I use posca pencils to sketch and line before coloring with alcohol markers, they are wax based and hold quite well without smudging. For details, i use either posca pencils (again) or Derwent lightfast pencils (oil based) as they are more tender and pigmented in my opinion, as well as a faber castell fine liner 0.1, and white posca for highlights.
When i ink, i use either a 0.05 Staedtler pigment liner or permanent ink and a very fine nib (i don't remember the brand).
I hope it helps 😊

Hey king, you got any colored pencil recommendations? I picked up a set of Prismacolors a little while back and I've been enjoying them but honestly one of the best ways to get a recommendation is from someone who's got Opinions:tm: about the tactile feel and I am always game for getting someone to go the fuck off about a thing
Stopppp what have I told you guys about asking me about colored pencils, you have to be more specific! Bc I can recommend different brands for different uses! If you're on a budget but still want quality I recommend arteza expert or brutfuner if you can find them. Hell I'd even still recommend Crayola too. If you like the waxy feel of pencils I recommend Derwent coloursoft. If you want color that pops right off the page I recommend posca but they're a little harder to get here bc they're a Japanese brand. If you like the oily feel of pencils I recommend Faber castell or Lyra Rembrandt. Dewernt lightfast is a perfect combination of waxy and oily. If you just want the best pencils in the world then that's caran d'ache luminance. I have 20+ packs of pencils so I have recs for any occasion but I tried to keep my reply simple lol

World Watercolour Month 2022 - Day 16 to 31
Day 16
Derwent Metallic Paint Pans. Ooh. Shiny.
Day 17
Schmincke Aquadrops - Sepia
I forgot just how heavily pigmented liquid watercolour can be. This stuffs a real mover too, especially if you encourage it with a brush even a little.
Day 18
Caran d'Ache Neocolor II water-soluble wax crayons - Lemon Yellow, Lilac
Crayon into wet, dry, dry and manipulated with a wet brush, mixed dry then blended with a wet brush.
Day 19
Marabu Aqua Ink - Pyrrole Re, Sunshine Yellow, Quinacridone Gold
The Sunshine Yellow is definitely the movingest. I have not yet investigated how lightfast these are.
Day 20
Boreal Blue - PB29, Pearlescent - Isaro
Day 21
Desert Green - PR108, PG26 - Schmincke
Day 22
Serpentine Genuine - Daniel Smith
Made from Australian Stichtite, it granulates to a burnt scarlet. You can see the red if you look closely at this. It does some funky things with gauze texture.
Day 23
Payne’s Grey - Winsor Newton
I like this colour so much I bought the big tube.
Day 24
Coliro (top/round) makers of Finetec-branded (bottom/square) paints.
C: Apple Green, Moss Green, Mermaid, Peacock Blue, Blackberry, Red Brown
F: Blue Silver, Mystic Colour, Caribbean Green, High Chroma Blue, Orange Copper, Tangelo
They both use the same round peg on the bottom of the pans, so can both be stored in the proprietary palettes.
Day 25
Haze Indigo - PB29, PG26, PBR33 - Schmincke
Day 26
Haze Brown - PBR7, PBK11 - Schmincke
Day 27
Lilac - Derwent Artbar
A discontinued product. These were a triangle-shaped waxy crayon that was watersoluble.
Day 28
Derivan Liquid Pencil - Comes in two forms: permanent and rewettable.
L to R - Grey 9, Grey 3, Blue, Yellow, Sepia, Red
Day 29
Peacock Blue - Derwent Inktense
Theses come in a block form and a pencil form. They are a solidified ink that is watersoluble, does not reactivate after it dries, and can be used on cloth as well as paper.
Day 30
Media from another mother - my collection of gouache. Should I get more?
Day 31
A very kind soul, knowing my finances are problematic, offered to buy me some paints earlier this year. I declined, because while I would love more art supplies, I sure don’t need them. When I had money, not having a mortgage or children, I buy art supplies.
As many wise souls have said, buying art supplies and using them are two different hobbies.
This is by no means an exhaustive portrait.

Introducing MEAT, The John Bishop Advent Calendar 2023. Day 1.
I further developed my portraiture style during 2023 and with my colouring techniques I discovered that as well as a fascination with teeth I also love sculpting the fat and flesh of the face and showing the effect of meat on bone. I was very proud of my art being called tangible and that they felt they wanted to reach in and touch it. This is my 3rd year of making an Advent Calendar focused on portraits of John Bishop. I used Arteza Everblend alcohol markers, Ohuhu alcohol markers underneath Derwent Lightfast and Faber-Castell Polychromos colouring pencils.

is it worth paying out the ass for colored pencils?
This really depends on what your budget is and what you're planning on doing with them. If you're strictly on a budget then you absolutely don't need expensive pencils. There are MANY budget pencils that still work amazing. If you're a coloring book artist for example or doing something where you don't need too much blending or detail then again you don't expensive stuff. In general I would say there is no need for high end stuff if you're not a professional or aspiring professional. BUT if you happen to have the means and you do buy expensive pencils then generally they will never steer you wrong. Trust me you do get your money's worth in terms of quality. The most expensive pencils I've found are caran d'ache luminance and Derwent lightfast and they both are actually made by God. If you ask me though the type of paper you use is more important than the pencils. You can have the best pencils in the word but if you have shitty paper then the drawing will reflect that
