umm 22 for the voice asks

i got excited & nervous bc ive never done a voice thing before so apologies! also, i didn't check until i started transcribing, but despite what the tracklist says, this is actually "what a difference a day makes" by esther phillips. contrary to the file name, donna summer is NOT in this one.

22: i’ll talk about something that makes me happy

[transcript: hello! so i love music, and, um---i mean, so doesn't everyone, but uh...[laughs] um, even though my favorite songs list wouldn't seem to reflect it, my favorite musical genre is disco. um, overall, disco is my favorite genre, it's just...it's disco, you know, like there's something about it. um, and i also really like, um, getting records. and actually recently my grandfather, um, made the transition to all digital media, um, so he gave me all of these old folk records. i actually got, um, a lead belly, uh, cd, and i was really excited about that because i adore lead belly, um, but we're actually not talking about folk right now, are we? um. [laughs] and there's also this used bookstore right by where i live that sells records as well, and in that used bookstore i, um, got this copy of medea that someone had written in, and i got this, uh, book about women in theatre, and in addition to these things, i also got a, um, record called DISCOMANIA 2 (AS ADVERTISED), and, um, it's over one hour of continuous play (it says all this on the cover, and on the cover there's a kind of rainbow, um, that comes from a star with a 2 next to it, and "DISCOMANIA" in funky writing) and, um, it's got all these wonderful disco hits on it, and, um, i listen to it in my room whenever i'm feeling sad. um, so it's been making the rotations quite a bit lately, um, unfortunately, but fortunately because i like listening to it. um, so i'm gonna play a little for you. this is "love to love you, baby" by donna summer. um, it's the first track of side one.

Four Flies Records put out a best of their 2022 releases compilation in December

2022 has seen us unearth forgotten gems, make rare masterpieces available again, and release new exciting artists! Our opener and closer come from Chiara Civello’s 12” maxi single “Sono Come Sono” – Neapolitan groove meets Brazilian funk in the original, to which Whodamanny’s remix adds irresistible tribal vibes. Next up is Jolly Mare’s fantastic retouch of the infectious Umiliani classic “Discomania”, followed by soulful Salifornia rapper Tonico 70. “Nuvole Che Passano” is a true gem taken from the first ever compilation of library music by Enzo Minuti, aka Ezy Minus, who is also behind the little psych-dub masterpiece “Black Lights”. The selection continues with a trio of giants: Alessandro Alessandroni (from our exclusive box set “Alessandroni Proibito”), Piero Umiliani (from the reissue of “Paesaggi”) and Berto Pisano (from “La Novizia”). Ike’s smooth neo soul leads us to Dedy Dread and Olivia Ruff’s warm groove and to Scerida’s cosmic-exotic dreamland (released on our imprint Edizioni Della Notte), before Moonbrew and Paolo Apollo Negri take us into space and Banda Maje draw us back into the funky sound of Salifornia. It’s day 7 of the #25daysofvinylmas challenge by @XOaudio_: Bad Santa: A Guilty Pleasure Various Artists - Saturday Night Discomania (Columbia Special Products, 1978) I don’t believe in guilty pleasures, but feel this is the kind of record people think of when they use that term. How about just…pleasure? I happen to love disco and would argue that, aside from its conception as an obvious Saturday Night Fever cash-in, this is an important record. Why? Because by featuring original disco hits from 74-77 it gave some further context to the glossy soundtrack collection, which was mostly newer songs. Whatever, it’s just a supremely fun mix, with only one or two duff tracks (Doctor Love by First Choice? Meh). It attracted many heterosexual luminaries as well as such gay and bisexual men as Truman Capote, Roy Cohn, Salvador Dalí, Divine, Bob Fosse, Halston, Mick Jagger, Rick James, Elton John, Calvin Klein, Karl Lagerfeld, Yves Saint-Laurent, Francesco Scavullo, Valentino, and Andy Warhol.Īrtists who made live appearances included frequent patrons Grace Jones and Donna Summer as well as Sylvester, James Brown, Gloria Gaynor, and the Village People. Well-built bartenders and busboys dressed in gym shorts and sneakers added to the sexual energy of the music and crowd. Special effects included fluttering fabric flames, floating aluminum strips, neon wheels, strobe lights, and the legendary animated Man in the Moon with a Cocaine Spoon sculpture. At capacity, the club could accommodate 2,000 patrons with a 5,400 square-foot dance floor and 85-foot high ceilings. The club was known for its velvet rope door policy where Rubell hand selected guests ranging from unknowns to high-profile gay, bisexual, and straight celebrities. Among the design team were many gay men that included architect Scott Bromley and those who later died of AIDS: interior designer Ron Doud, sound designer Richard Long (also for the Paradise Garage), and graphic designer Gil Lesser (known for his award-winning poster for “Equus”). Studio 54 was transformed into a disco in six weeks with a modest investment of $400,000. They were inspired after visiting Le Jardin at 110 West 43rd Street (in the basement of the now-demolished Diplomat Hotel), a gay nightclub that became one of the first to blur the line between gay, bisexual, and straight spaces. Rubell and Schrager wanted to create a new nightclub that replicated the energy of New York’s gay clubs, which were more dance oriented and sexually charged. The two sold the business in 1980 and the club soon reopened operating until 1986, but without the glamour of its heyday.īy 1976, discomania was sweeping the nation with over 8,000 dance clubs throughout the country. Legendary nightclub Studio 54, the brainchild of Brooklyn-born Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager, operated here during its first incarnation from April 1977 to February 1980. It became the Casino de Paris nightclub in 1933, the New Yorker Theater again in 1939 under the Federal Theater Project of the Works Progress Administration, and was a CBS television studio from 1942 to 1972. There was one production here with LGBT associations – Rainbow (1928), with singer/actor Libby Holman. Opened as the Gallo Opera House in 1927, it was foreclosed after the stock market crash in 1929, and became the New Yorker Theater.
