reader is so fucking messed up 😓 and omg the amount of researching i had to do to find out genshin lore 💀
The archons feared The Moirai. They feared you. Being the only sibling of Phanes— you were incredibly powerful. Phanes, who was the god of time and wind, and also your sibling, had to be in contact with you wherever you went, considering the fact that you were the personification of fate itself.
“I ensure that every being, mortal and divine, lived out their destiny as it was assigned to them by the laws of the universe. ”
Although the current archons have cut ties with Celestia (exp. Raiden), they will always be watched under your prying eyes— who will always expect them to follow their destiny.
“ they dare defy the laws of the universe and my commands? if it’s punishment they desire, then punishment they will receive. ”
Destiny has been written at the beginning of the existence of a soul, and to you, it is their job to fulfill that destiny. You can either guide them to the road of fate or forcefully let them live out their destiny against their will. In your eyes, defying the rules of destiny (which is quite literally impossible), is punishable by death.
Which is exactly why The Moirai is feared.
The people of teyvat have long forgotten you and Phanes, which angers you to the core. how dare they forget their creator? your sibling! utterly ungrateful! “ why have you fallen in love with your creations, oh dearest sibling? what has possessed you? ”
“ I find beauty in my creations. do you not? ” you would sigh and look at Phanes in disbelief. “ I simply don't. even I, the epitome of beauty in this world, do not find beauty in those vile creatures. ” Phanes stared at you with sadness and looked away, “ vile? ” whispered Phanes, making you scoff, rolling your eyes to look at the roaming creatures of teyvat. “ if you're only here to speak about your precious creations, you can leave and let me do my duty as the personification of fate. ”

[ QnA ] Why choose ‘lucifer’ as the demon name for the reader?
Astaroth (also Ashtaroth, Astarot and Asteroth), in demonology, was known to be the Great Duke of Hell in the first hierarchy with Beelzebub and Lucifer; he was part of the evil trinity. Both names are taken except for Lucifer. Reader is a god who rules over teyvat, alongside with Phanes.
[ QnA ] Why choose moirai as the greek god name for the reader?
Even the gods feared the Moirai or Fates, which according to Herodotus a god could not escape. according to Wikipedia (not a reliable source, i know- but bare with me.), Phanes personal information contained parents and siblings. in the siblings area, Moirai is one of Phanes’ sibling, other than Chaos and Horae. it would be much more accurate for the reader to be inspired by Nyx, but I already wrote halfway.
[ QnA ] is this following genshin lore and is it accurately representing the personification of fate (The Moirai) from greek mythology?
Honestly, I tried my best to follow genshin lore. Genshin lore is incredibly confusing and is too much to consume at a short amount of time (especially the Celestia and the Phanes lore of genshin). At last, it might be/is inaccurate. The Moirai, however, is mostly accurate. I took each piece of information I could get my hands on and slapped it into this post. HOWEVERRRRR, I am not confident in the siblings part. I apologize if it’s inaccurate, I am not trying to offend anyone 😓

29-Dutchess Astaroth
Enn:Tasa alora foren Astaroth
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Other Names: Ashtaroth, Ashtarot, Ashtoreth, Astarot
(Astarte is another name, though often thought to be a separate entity, potentially Ishtar.)
The Twenty-ninth Spirit is Duke/Dutchess Astaroth. A spirit of divination/scrying, love, and friendship. He appears in the form of an hurtful angel riding on an Infernal beast like a dragon, and carrying in his right hand a viper. He is ghostly pale in color, something like a corpse with blackened eyes – no pupils. He gives true answers of things past, present, and to come, and can discover all secrets. He will declare wittingly how the spirits fell, if desired, and the reason of his own fall. He can make men wonderfully knowing in all liberal sciences. He rules 40 Legions of spirits.
Astarte
Astarte/Ἀστάρτη, is the Hellenized form of the Ancient Near Eastern goddess ʿAṯtart. ʿAṯtart was the Northwest Semitic equivalent of the East Semitic goddess Ishtar.
In the Baʿal Epic of Ugarit, Ashtart is one of the allies of the eponymous hero. With the help of Anat she stops him from attacking the messengers who deliver the demands of Yam and later assists him in the battle against the sea god, possibly "exhorting him to complete the task" during it. It's a matter of academic debate if they were also viewed as consorts. Their close relation is highlighted by the epithet "face of Baal" or "of the name of Baal."
A different narrative, so-called "Myth of Astarte the huntress" casts Ashtart herself as the protagonist, and seemingly deals both with her role as a goddess of the hunt stalking game in the steppe, and with her possible relationship with Baal.

Sigil:Posted above
Plant:Laurel
Incense:Sandalwood
⬩Green candles or objects
⬩Ask Duke Astaroth what he likes⬩
⬩It is important to learn protections before trying to work with any spirits. You can get tricksters and parasites if you don't.
Cleansings- cleaning your space of negative energies. You can burn herbs or incense for this.
Banishings- forcing negative energies out of your space. The lesser banishing ritual is one of the most commonly used.
Warding- wards keep negative energy out of your space. Amulets, sigils and talismans do this.
Set up a your space and do a cleanse and banishing. Have wards up in your home. Meditation is to calm yourself and get your mind ready. The sigil (symbol) is what you draw on paper. The enn is what you chant or say to call forth the spirit.⬩

Most of them are Satan underling so far zero for Beelzebub💀
Yes! I feel the same way!!!!! I want a devil from Beelzebub's rule!!!
Like base on this Astaroth's wiki
Astaroth (also Ashtaroth, Astarot and Asteroth), in demonology, was known to be the Great Duke of Hell in the first hierarchy with Beelzebub and Lucifer; he was part of the evil trinity.
Was at least excepting him to be under Beelzebub after seeing this.
But somehow both Astaroth and Paimon are not connected to Lucifer and/or Beelzebub which most of pop-culture had them be loyal to either of these two.
Maybe there's a reason like story behind this decision of these placement of demons from lesser key/Ars Goetia

Nice touch having the snake poke his head on Astaroth's left side.

I'm more shock that he is under Satan's rule. Like there's Beelzebub right there. Even if Lucifer wasn't reveal yet (Even though that didn't stop them from revealing Phenix being under Asmodeus)
This have me curious is to way showing more devils under Satan's rule?
Oh nice detail there.
Yeah, I wonder that too. Like among the devils PrettyBusy has revealed to us, only 3 (Barbatos, Phenix, & Bimet) are under other demons, the rest belong to Satan’s yankee gang

True names
Damocles will often claim she has no name due to her complex felling about herself and her existence.
This is mostly true since her name as Theo has been erased from her existence. Names hold a significant amount of power over someone and more so if it's their true name.
She goes by Damocles because that's what she's called upon awakening.
"Shes a Damocles if I've ever seen one"
She was referred to as Damocles due to her being fortunate enough to get chance at a second life but will know always having to watch in fear and anxiety against dangers that might try to overtake her.
Her true name was given to her once she accepts who she is.
Tumblr media
She is named Asta after Astarte (also Athtart or Ashtar ) a Goddess of war, hunting, love and Astaroth (also Ashtaroth, Astarot and Asteroth), in demonology, is one of the Great Dukes of Hell.
If she gives you her name once she knows it then knows it then it its quiet possible she trusts you with her life.

“I need a book, and who better to ask than Hells most famous nerd.” --- Haagenti states his purpose bluntly, and with most of his usual foolishness tempered. Lack of title is not deliberate disrespect, but the Duke has been out of touch for so long he’s mostly impressed he remembers Ashtaroth at all. “I don’t even need the book itself, just the knowledge from it.” Finally recalls the other demons title and bends at the waist in a flourishing parody of a bow. “And I would be deeply indebted to your magnificent self, Your Highness.” Tone is jovial; Hedge has always had a problem with authority, and he struggles to keep it in check now.

fun stuff;;
Tumblr media
spooky stuff: when i started ash i knew nothing about ashtoreth or astaroth as a demon, and a lot of stuff that i’ve always thought of for ash lined up to be true with the stories of ashtoreth and astaroth. anyway, here are some fun tidbits:
things i know:
-prince of thrones -unholy trinity (lucifer, beelzebub, astaroth) -archdemon -tempter of laziness -teacher of liberal studies -knowledge of past, present, and future -knowledge of the fall -part of the first hierarchy -treasurer of hell -most active in august -opposed by st.bartholomew -speaks the truth -ruler of 40 legions -”guidance” for most demons (training) - different names: ashtoreth, astarte, ashtaroth, astarot, asteroth -intellectual manipulator -powerful ally -strategist -while they represent sloth, i read something that placed ash in the fifth circle, but i haven’t been able to find it again
things i’ve found today:
-great duke of the western regions -element of earth (something i’ve connected them too anyway) -color: green (i used to say their eyes were green. i’ve settled on white for lack of soul, but i believe their very essence is green) - “they can represent themselves as a beautiful or ugly prince. though some have seen a beautiful demoness” (i’ve always had ash as having male and female vessels, and when referring to the demon without a vessel, i dominantly use they) -” There are, however, other religions that see Astaroth as a helpful demon that is not necessarily benevolent, but is also not evil. “ (i’ve always played ash this way AND IM V SPOOKED) -eager to speak of intellectual pursuits. any who worshiped them seemed to flourish in intellectual societies -known to provide council, though prefers to provide to humans versus demons (always write ash as being v annoyed with anything to do with hell/demons) -does not want their wisdom to be associated with ill intent

Now Joshua was old and stricken in years; and the Lord said unto him, Thou art old and stricken in years, and there remaineth yet very much land to be possessed. This is the land that yet remaineth: all the borders of the Philistines, and all Geshuri, From Sihor, which is before Egypt, even unto the borders of Ekron northward, which is counted to the Canaanite: five Lords of the Philistines; the Gazites, and the Ashdothites, the Eshkalonites, the Gittites, and the Ekronites; also the Avites: From the south, all the land of the Canaanites, and Mearah that is beside the Sidonians, unto Aphek, to the borders of the Amorites: And the land of the Giblites, and all Lebanon, toward the sunrising, from Baal–gad under mount Hermon unto the entering into Hamath. All the inhabitants of the hill country from Lebanon unto Misrephoth–maim, and all the Sidonians, them will I drive out from before the children of Israel: only divide thou it by lot unto the Israelites for an inheritance, as I have commanded thee. Now therefore divide this land for an inheritance unto the nine tribes, and the half tribe of Manasseh, With whom the Reubenites and the Gadites have received their inheritance, which Moses gave them, beyond Jordan eastward, even as Moses the servant of the Lord gave them; From Aroer, that is upon the bank of the river Arnon, and the city that is in the midst of the river, and all the plain of Medeba unto Dibon; And all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites, which reigned in Heshbon, unto the border of the children of Ammon; And Gilead, and the border of the Geshurites and Maachathites, and all mount Hermon, and all Bashan unto Salecah; All the kingdom of Og in Bashan, which reigned in Ashtaroth and in Edrei, who remained of the remnant of the giants: for these did Moses smite, and cast them out. Nevertheless the children of Israel expelled not the Geshurites, nor the Maachathites: but the Geshurites and the Maachathites dwell among the Israelites until this day. Only unto the tribe of Levi he gave none inheritance; the sacrifices of the Lord God of Israel made by fire are their inheritance, as he said unto them. And Moses gave unto the tribe of the children of Reuben inheritance according to their families. And their coast was from Aroer, that is on the bank of the river Arnon, and the city that is in the midst of the river, and all the plain by Medeba; Heshbon, and all her cities that are in the plain; Dibon, and Bamoth–baal, and Beth–baal–meon, And Jahzah, and Kedemoth, and Mephaath, And Kiriathaim, and Sibmah, and Zereth–shahar in the mount of the valley, And Beth–peor, and Ashdoth–pisgah, and Beth–jeshimoth, And all the cities of the plain, and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, which reigned in Heshbon, whom Moses smote with the princes of Midian, Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, which were dukes of Sihon, dwelling in the country. Balaam also the son of Beor, the soothsayer, did the children of Israel slay with the sword among them that were slain by them. And the border of the children of Reuben was Jordan, and the border thereof. This was the inheritance of the children of Reuben after their families, the cities and the villages thereof. And Moses gave inheritance unto the tribe of Gad, even unto the children of Gad according to their families. And their coast was Jazer, and all the cities of Gilead, and half the land of the children of Ammon, unto Aroer that is before Rabbah; And from Heshbon unto Ramath–mizpeh, and Betonim; and from Mahanaim unto the border of Debir; And in the valley, Beth–haram, and Beth–nimrah, and Succoth, and Zaphon, the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon, Jordan and his border, even unto the edge of the sea of Chinnereth on the other side Jordan eastward. This is the inheritance of the children of Gad after their families, the cities, and their villages. And Moses gave inheritance unto the half tribe of Manasseh: and this was the possession of the half tribe of the children of Manasseh by their families. And their coast was from Mah

Duke Astaroth (Isis, Astarte, Easter, ?Hathor)
Color: Green Incense: Sandalwood Enn: Tasa Alora Foren Astaroth Day: ?Wednesday
“Astaroth is a high Luciferic angel, whom is a very powerful guardian spirit to invoke. Astaroth is uniquely balanced in nature – being a mix of angel and demon..."
"In ancient times Astarte descended from Heaven down to the Underworld to resurrect the dead prince Ba’al at Autumnal Equinox in The Festival of Seven Gates."
“Astaroth is something of a politician among the demons. She counsels both humans and demons alike… She can help one gain a good reputation and can create friendships between her followers and people with power and status in society. She knows all about the past, present, and future and can even help a person discover secrets through the prophetic dreams and visions that she shows to her followers…she can also teach all about the sciences and humanities as well.”
"A Daemoness of Divination. Invoke her for skrying especially. She is also a Daemoness of friendship and love and can help you find these things. "Her knowledge is specified mostly on the Fall of the Angels...Dukante’s Hierarchy as “Family Four: Demoness of Love” (Astarte). Astaroth is also referred to as Astarte, Ashtaroth, Astarot, and Asteroth."

all research for this muse has been conducted on my own, and portrayal will be a mixture of my own headcanons, as well as literary and religious canon.
before the creation of hell, astaroth had been a respectable angel and part of lucifer’s legion. she was close with her other siblings as well, most notably gadiel and michael. she was always praised for her loyalty and her willingness to do what was asked of her, as well as her fierceness in battle and refusal to back down.
as time went on, her loyalty to god shifted, and pledged herself to her commander and brother. she fought by his side when heaven turned against him, and fell with him and the rest of their legion. she was one of the most loyal followers he had, even after he created hell and brought the downfall of humanity to god’s science experiment.
she always felt that his way was the only correct path, and never questioned him, until her angelic light was ripped out by hell and replaced with something dark and heavy. the pain of the transformation did not bother her, but instead the transformation that her brother had endured.
where once was warmth and affection for his followers was replaced with bitterness and rejection. he no longer worried for them, he no longer communed or dined or shared with them his thoughts and struggles. instead, he asked of them impossible and evil tasks, things that she never thought herself capable of. she watched as any who questioned him were struck down, just as god had done in heaven, and decided that she would rather obey than let it all end.
the more she fought in hell’s wars, the less she cared or really remembered what it felt like to be holy and righteous, and gave fully into what she had now become. as a gift for her loyalty, lucifer promoted her to grand duke, and under her she commanded forty legions. in the great wars of hell against the armies of heaven, astaroth served as asmodeus’ right hand, appearing as a foul angel with the infernal dragon.
they had become close, and her loyalty began to shift once more away from her king and to the prince of lust. after lucifer was caged, she became blood sworn to asmodeus, as all of her faith in lucifer had been destroyed when heaven’s host had buried him beyond any hope of escape. with their king locked away, the war came to a screeching halt and slowly, the armies of hell scattered, including almost all of of astaroth’s forty legions.
in more recent times, she is still very loyal to asmodeus, and has been recruiting fresher demons to fight under her. now that lucifer has been freed once more, she is ready to take up arms again against heaven and help her king achieve his goals.
however, until asmodeus gives the command, she will continue about her normal duties, which include teaching calculus at a local university, as well as having a small role in the accounting department of the company run by asmodeus and ba’al.

Who is Astaroth?
Astaroth is often depicted as one of the demons that serves as the ‘Great Duke of Hell’ though there is some debate over if he is a demon or was simply brought into existence as a demon when the modern religions of this world rose to power. It is thought that the origins of Astaroth are rooted in the Babylonian goddess Astarte and that she was transformed into the demon Astaroth as a way of undermining existing beliefs. For this reason, it is essential to know Astarte and other ancient goddesses to fully understand Astaroth.
Because of the debate over the origins of Astaroth, there are several different variations of who he (or she) is in their true form. Most versions of the dominant religions (especially Christianity and Islam) claim that Astaroth has always been a demon. Their explanation for the appearance of the creature in modern day is simply that as a deceiver, Astaroth took the form of the goddess Astarte in order to gain favor among people. He is said to commonly try to win people over through laziness and the manipulation of logic.
There are, however, other religions that see Astaroth as a helpful demon that is not necessarily benevolent, but is also not evil. Additionally, some writings that mention Astaroth seem to portray him as an angel that is ‘opposed to the demon of power’ [Testament of Solomon].
Astaroth According to Modern Religion
What is known of Astaroth according to the major religions is that he is said to be part of the first hierarchy in Hell that is comprised of an evil trinity (Astaroth, Beelzebub, and Lucifer [Satan]). Astaroth is perhaps one of the lesser threats to humanity so far as physical danger is concerned, though it appears that he is fond of manipulation and corruption that is intellectual in nature.
This isn’t to say, however, that Astaroth doesn’t have impressive power in the ranks of Hell. As one of the Grand Dukes of Hell (the evil trinity), Astaroth holds immense power that must be recognized. In addition to his spot in the evil trinity Astaroth is thought to command 40 legions of demons and spirits, suggesting that he is also a respected military strategist. This could play into why Astaroth is seen as such a political ally. Astaroth is also given a spot that reflects his impressive intelligence as the Treasurer of Hell. With these combined titles, it is easy to see why this demon is both greatly feared and respected.
It is said that when Astaroth is summoned, he is willing to share his great knowledge of the past, present, future, and intellectual pursuits. However, when one summons Astaroth, it is important to take precautions. This demon is known for his foul smelling breath that is said to be fatal upon encounters. To protect oneself from Astaroth’s breath, it is said that a charmed ring made of pure silver can be used as protection. This ring must be held underneath the nose of the summoner to ensure that the individual will remain protected for the entire interaction with Astaroth. Failure to do this will result in death.
The Many Sides of Astaroth
If you were, however, able to summon Astaroth, you’d find that the demon is quite forthcoming with information and always answers truthfully. It is said that Astaroth is especially fond of telling people the creation story and the tale regarding the fall of the angels and old world. While this seems to be out of line with the behavior that would be expected from a Grand Duke of Hell, it is possible that this demon has an ulterior motive. Every tale of an encounter with Astaroth is said to have at least one point in time where the Duke is shown be very upset to have become a demon and seems to think that he has been misjudged. He will tell the full truth of the story of his fall, though he will often make it a point to demonstrate why he is being unjustly judged and punished.
There are conflicting views for why Astaroth is known to plead his case so frequently. Those who follow the opinions of the major religions claim that Astaroth uses his knowledge to manipulate the truth of his fall and lead others into temptation and, eventually, eternal damnation. Others are of the belief that Astaroth is a victim and his (or her) image has been misconstrued over time.
To say the least, Astaroth’s view on his appearance as a demon is interesting because it is unclear if he has earned this title because he was once an angel that was cast out of the creator’s favor, or if he is a demon because a religion or culture found it necessary to change his true identity. Either way, the Grand Duke is clear that the punishment he has been given is unjust – though most who believe in Astaroth will attribute this to one of his tricks.
Knowledge of Astaroth
If asked, Astaroth will speak any truth concerning the past, present, or future. He is also quick to help others gain knowledge about anything involving intellectual pursuits and is especially eager to help with questions of science. Those who worshiped him in various ancient cultures were known to flourish and were known for their intellectual societies.
Astaroth is also known to be a great mentor to turn to if in need of assistance – especially if that assistance is needed to make important political or business connections. According to many legends, Astaroth serves as a council to both humans and demons – though he seems to have a preference towards human affairs. This is possibly because Astaroth seems to have a conscience when it comes to giving advice and does not want his wisdom to be associated with evil or ill intent.
Interestingly enough, although Astaroth is considered to be part of the evil trinity, he is only willing to give power to those who seek his help in order to accomplish good deeds. It is said that if anyone attempts to summon him for ill intentions, he will refuse to give them assistance. Additionally, many people claim that Astaroth will only appear to those who see him as the goddess Astarte. Anyone who doesn’t recognize her a goddess and tries to summon Astaroth in demon form is usually ignored, though there are a small amount of success stories.
Physical Appearance
The accounts of Astaroth’s appearance differ depending on which texts you rely on – those of major religion describing Astaroth, or those of early religion describing Astarte.
Texts that describe Astaroth depict him as a wretched angel. ‘The Lesser Key of Solomon’ describes Astaroth as follows:
“The Twenty-ninth Spirit is Astaroth. He is a Mighty, Strong Duke, and appeareth in the form of a hurtful Angel riding on an Infernal Beast like a Dragon, and carrying in his right hand a Viper. Thou must in no wise let him approach too near unto thee, least he do thee damage by his Noisome Breath.”
Other accounts mention Astaroth ay have horned wings and often note the gloomy nature of the being.
The accounts that describe Astarte, however, could not be more different. Astarte was commonly referred to as the ‘Queen of Heaven’ and is often described as having long golden hair, fairly tall, and being surrounded by a mix of white and gold.
The Fall of Astarte and Rise of Astaroth
There is some controversy regarding the fall of Astarte and rise of Astaroth. There are several theories as to who Astaroth may be, but it is difficult to determine which is true.
The ancient Sumerians, Babylonians, and Egyptians all regarded Astarte with the highest regards, though they did recognize her under different names. She was supposedly the goddess of fertility and war, and symbolizes a life of luxury. Many temples and statues were built in her honor and all areas that she guarded over supposedly thrived during her reign.
However, when the major religions came to power (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam), they tarnished Astarte’s name and claimed that she was a deceiver. Over time, they changed her name to Astaroth and said that he was a Grand Duke of Hell that appeared in the form of Astarte (and others) when he was trying to deceive people.
Interestingly enough, there are some parts of Astarte that remain in Christianity according to those who still believe in the goddess. Some claim that ‘The Virgin Mary’ was fictitious, and was created to take the place of Astarte in literature. There is no evidence that this is true, though it does pose an interesting question.
Though there are no definitive answers to the question of which is real – Astarte or Astaroth, many people who try to summon Astaroth report failure unless they call upon ‘him’ by the name Astarte. Those who do this claim to see a female goddess instead of a demon. Others, however, claim that they have seen the demon Astaroth and that he exists as the deceiver that religious texts describe.
Astaroth in Other Cultures
Astarte
Astarte was a Mesopotamian goddess who was known for her connection to fertility, sexuality, and war. She was greatly respected and was one of the main deities that was worshiped during this time.
According to legends, Astarte was worshiped by many cultures under different names and was also the first primordial goddess of Venus.
Inanna
Inanna was a Sumerian goddess who was often referred to as the ‘Queen of Heaven.’ Because Inanna and Astarte are so similar, many theologists believe she is the same goddess as Astarte.
Inanna was known for her many talents, but most notably for her position as the goddess of love, beauty, sex, desire, fertility, and war. Inanna was also known for her deep reverence for justice and was known to hold great political power. This is possibly why Astaroth is credited with being well known for his abilities to make powerful political connections on behalf of man.
Ishtar
May theologists also connect Astarte to Ishtar – the Akkadian goddess. This is possibly because of her high rank in the Akkadian society and the association with fertility and power. There are, however, noticeable differences. Ishtar is known to have associations with the storehouse and was thought to be the goddess of dates, meat, grain, and wool. She was also thought to be the goddess of rain and thunderstorms. It is thought that Ishtar’s connection to storms may have lead to her association (and by default Astaroth’s association) with war.
Isis
Because of Isis’ connections and similarities to Astarte, it is likely that she had a large role in shaping the character of Astaroth. Isis was known for her role with the underworld, her power over other gods, and her bountiful wisdom. Her dedication, kind nature, and depiction in the tale of the revival of Osiris and birth of Horus also help to cement her as the mother of the afterlife. This could have possibly influenced the way that Astaroth is portrayed in Hades. As a trustworthy counselor, Isis’ traits are almost certainly to credit for this characteristic. Both are deities who are powerful and knowledgeable – making them a force to be reckoned with.
Explanation of the Myth
Astaroth is certainly a demon with many interesting qualities and a complicated past, but there are still many questions as to his connections with the ancient goddesses listed above. Because of this, Astaroth’s identity will always be a bit of a mystery.
Regardless of whether Astaroth has always been a demon, was once an angel who became a demon, or was a goddess whose identity was hidden, the fact remains that he holds tremendous power and knowledge. His existence likely speaks to the need to identify a creator that signified good and a source of opposition with the capability to pose a threat to humanity. Such opposition would have been important in instilling the need to live by a certain moral code and establishing rules and regulations in society that lead to stable civilizations.

Joshua 13
Verse 16 is 37 syllables with at least 2 opportunities for a pause. I wonder if the composer thought there was no word in the sentence that merited a rest. Verse 9 contains most of the words of verse 16 and it also has no rest. In fact 9 reasonably long recitatives are expected from the singer. The lack of rest underlines the urgency of the settlement of the land. One cannot rest when trouble and sin remain in the body whether Yahweh himself is the agent of dispossession or the responsible unit of the body. (That is the analogical interpretation of the music.) I inherited a safe herb chopper from a great teacher whom I knew. I always think of him and his wife (Joseph and Betty Richardson) when I am cutting up herbs from the garden. He once said to me, Have you not realized that it is our sheep and our goats that are to be separated in us? That would have been about 15 years ago.
Joseph's rich and extraordinary life's accomplishments included 14 years in India as a Missionary where he revolutionized education in South-East India. This experience developed Joseph's deep love and interest in the people of India that led him to international recognition as a distinguished scholar and teacher at the University of British Columbia in the Department of Religious Studies.
I may be attributing this advice to the wrong source. I heard similar advice prior to 1977 from a Dr. Jacob Varughese whose letter I received after he had died! I seem to have some Indian influence in my earlier life. We knew Jacob and his wife in Toronto in the '70s. Have we settled our promised land? In a word, no. It is full of enemies, most as I have said elsewhere, of our own making. But some are very difficult and are work for the intercessors. And some, like our desire to control the conversation even when we have zero information, need constant work from us. Again in these lists there are gaps in the information. Words to be understood in the gaps are for the reader to figure out.
