im kind of over the sex ed casting thing (im not) but im mostly just sad that we had to figure out that chaneil, sami and chris were gone and didn’t get it in an interview or announcement. the three have been a part of the show for years (chaneil and chris from the very beginning) so it just feels a tad disrespectful to not announce it or something? idk

Let me tell you why I don't like Marcus.
I usually always support those amazing, sweet, good hearted second love interests who gets thrown out and broken hearted when the hero/heroine picks the other guy (who sometimes is toxic and not as good as the second guy). For example I was mad at Eric Effiong when he discarded Rahim for Adam in s2 of Sex Education (nvm I fell for adam in s3).
But Marcus reminds me of all the entitled 'Nice guys' I have met in my life. They have no other quality except being 'nice' and by nice I mean not doing anything hurtful as in the bare minimum. Marcus basically did the bare minimum by being nice to Simon and courting him. But that made him feel entitled that he needs to picked over the guy Simon time and time again said he is still hung up on. Marcus thought that since Wilhelm is a prince, he'll never choose Simon. Wilhelm is way out of Simon's league. So even if Simon is heartbroken, he'll eventually come around when he'll realize he doesn’t stand a chance. That's why Marcus promised they'll take it as slow as Simon wants because he thought with time Simon will forget Wilhelm and since Wilhelm will not give Simon the time of the day, it won't be difficult. He didn’t try to listen to Simon. Instead manipulated him saying that Simon isn't like his dad, meaning someone who is toxic and sabotages his relationships.
In fact I don't think Simon even cheated on Marcus. Didn't they say they are taking it slow? They just started going out. They never made it official, Simon didn’t want to, Marcus said it was okay. And after sleeping with Wilhelm the first thing he did is go to Marcus to break it up. So if you weren’t even dating, not sleeping with each other, just hanging out while making it clear you are not ready for anything serious, is it even cheating if you get back together with your ex and tell the other guy almost immediately that it's over? I don't think so.

SEX EDUCATION SPOILERS!!!!!!
rewatching Sex Ed before s4 comes out in september and have finally realized that Eric cheating should not have been that shocking. At the end of s2 he publicly admits his feelings to Adam while still being in an explicit (and i’m assuming exclusive) relationship with Rahim. Sure all they do is hold hands but it makes his actions in Nigeria Much more on brand. It’s a bummer that he sucks like that but a relief that his actions in s3 are in character and not a random writing choice to push the plot

Sex Education Season 4: Thoughts
So, with a little prompting, I am doing this write up. And bow howdy, I don't even know where to begin.
I guess, let's start with the obvious; Sex Education has a Too Many Characters problem. But we knew this- they've had this for many seasons. After Season 3, we said the same thing, with comments like "The Cal/Jackson plotline felt extranneous" because yeah, it did. Confoundingly, though, SE4 maintains a Too Many Characters problem while booting people we've consistently known. This isn't consistent with the past of Sex Education, where people have fluctuated in their roles between major and minor character (see Lily, Ola, Rahim, Adam, Ruby, etc); instead, characters like Lily Rahim and Ola just get completely ousted in favor of more new introductions- like... while I don't find the characters objectionable, I simply have no vested interest in the outcome of Abbi and Roman and O.
As I mentioned previously in another post, a lot of the core dynamics feel totally lost. I think there was something there in the plotline they wanted to explore with Otis and Eric; it's something I don't think I've ever seen portrayed in media, Eric telling Otis that they don't talk about important and obvious differences between them and how stifling that can be for Eric. But it's NOT explored. It's mentioned an episode before the end and resolved with no conclusion and a hug.
The entire first season revolves around the relationship between a mother and son. Other than that one scene where Otis gets his dig in on Jean, where is their relationship?
Even Maeve & Otis, which is the only consistent theme that persists, feels like a shell of itself. It's all sort of cookie-cutter relationship drama, it doesn't feel like it's in any way unique to the foundation and relationship Maeve and Otis have built way back in Season 1.
And I can't say it was all bad- there were things that hit. Aimee's relationship to art and trauma and moving on were great and I thought her relationship with Isaac was adorable. Cal's story was great. Adam and his father rekindling their relationship was wonderful too. But it was these very self-contained side stories that felt like they had pleasing resolutions. Never the main story.
And... what even was the main story? We hopped around so much. There was no throughline. The story of Season 1 is Otis and Maeve run a sex clinic. The story of Season 3 is the Moordale students need to take on the new headmaster's insane regulations. The story of Season 4 is nonexistent. The most coherent storyline I could find was the battle of the sex therapists, and even that felt like it was on the backburner half the time.
All in all, Season 4 felt like a weird, not-great rehashing of everything that had already happened. Maeve's storyline with her mother already had closure, she already said goodbye and realized her only real family left were her friends. And she does it again in Season 4. Adam's father realized the error of his ways and begins to try make amends... in Season 3. And he does it again in Season 4. Ruby, despite being rejected and heartbroken, helps Otis achieve his goals and they leave things on an ambiguous "we're not friends" note... in Season 3. And she does it again in Season 4. Maeve chooses herself and Otis must come to terms with letting go of his first love as she flies off to America... in Season 3. And she does it again in Season 4.
It's all a repeat. Other than a few of the side stories, it's thematic rehashing left and right. I think I wanted closure on the characters I knew and the relationships and instead I got a repeat of themes I had already seen. It was just a letdown.

so, I'm halfway through episode 2 of the latest season of sex education, which means a lot of things might still change. But I had to pause Netflix to come here and scream a little. Because I just love, love love how they portrayed Eric's struggles with babtism and how he didn't actually struggle with God but with Church. Because, dude, I feel that. And also his conversation afterwards with Abbi made me feel really seen. Because I vibed so hard with Eric when he got excited about how queer the new school is - but I also very much resonated with "some people can be a bit weird about the whole religion thing". But it had nuance. His church is kinda homophobic but the pastor is nice and it's still Eric's community. I see that a lot in how a lot of queer Christians, especially Catholics, feel (because Catholics tend to be more conservative in Europe).
It also reminds me of that one scene in season three where Rahim said it's cute how they all take it so seriously and Eric was like: hold up, I also take it seriously. Like I'm gay but this is important to me, too, and it doesn't mean I don't believe in God.
Honestly, this level of nuance to this conversation is super rare and they did it so well, and I'm super excited to see how this goes.

ive yet to watch the final episode of season 4 but my gosh how does no one else find otis a completely unlikable character.
the end of season 3 had him going "i want to help people and be kind". where season 4? where is this character arc you set up? his treatment of Eric when he brought up the issues of their friendship and the immediate dismissal. i recoiled. it reeked of white fragility and selfishness. how we had nothing other than the emotional tension set up in season 3 between Ruby and him as "proof" he wasnt just using her, how instead of a thought provoking and considerate approach to a rival therapist we saw him tantruming (which tbf did get addressed but not enough for him to realise his actions, but just to feel sorry for himself with what he got accused of being), frankly being quite toxic in his approach to Maeves feelings and their connection to then suddenly having a heartfelt goodbye. to so many other things we never see him grow from or confront. i fully understand that yes being a teenager is messy, and yes otis had little help with addressing his issues with feeling over-therapised by Jean, but fuck the foundations of a really good arc was set up upon him at the end of season 3 and what did we get? all the things which make him annoying and unable to grow. also im not criticising flawed or troubled characters because they usually have the best narratives surrounding them, but theres just something profoundly unlikeable with otis that only got worse as the seasons went on. whenever it got brought up, we never actually got a payoff in later episodes, or he was just allowed to move on without any repercussions. this is why i loved characters like Adam (please don't get me started on the loss of his dynamic in season 4 with Rahim it would've been BRILLIANT) and Maeve and Jackson and all the other characters actually confronting their issues. idk where I'm going with this but it just had to be said.

hard agree to all of that. i also didn't really realise that rahim was cheated on, but you're correct. they were literally boyfriends
the rahim one was actually heartbreaking and made that finale so sour for me. i was always team eric over team eric/boyfriend, but that was such a harsh way to do it and made me dislike eric for a bit.
rahim didn't even want to be at the musical - he hates them!! but he went for eric, and not only did eric cheat on him there, he did it in front of the entire school which rahim has to keep returning to - and they even all clapped????? it was just so mean and it was all so they could get a cute moment for the worst ship in the world and i really hate how rahim's part of that was so sidelined. it was such a fucked up way to cheat on someone and eric's age, immaturity and lack of experience is never an excuse for that because you can't think that's an ok thing to do. and it was clearly bad writing because they wanted us to like eric/adam as characters and as a couple lol

Is Adam Groff just an Introvert?
When it comes to film/tv there is a phrase: show, don't tell.
But, when a story is heavily influenced on character rather than being plot driven, dialogue is wildly important. This is the case with Sex Education.
Sex Educations - I'm focusing on season 3 - really wants to tell us that Ada Groff has internalized homophobia and is having a hard time coming to terms with being bisexual and coming it. But... I really feel like that isn't what they showed us. They showed us the poor dude is just a shy introvert (and possibly coded as neurodivergent - that's another post).
Adam and Eric came back to Adam's to find his mom Maureen with a man (who's name I don't recall). Adam introduces Eric as his friend which seems to hurt Eric. OK. so I grew up with a parent who dated and sometimes had flings. I would NEVER come out to some rando my mom was seeing. I probably wouldn't even talk to them... just wave awkwardly and go to my room. In terms of social etiquette it would be SO weird to just come out to said rando. That has nothing to do with how queer or comfortable Adam is. At. All.
When Eric returns home - from his visit to his Aunt's where he cheated on Adam which is never addressed at all in s4 but whatever that actor is charismatic AF so who cares in the character is a little sh*t -.- moving on - he asks Adam to go to a club with him. Adam seems reluctant.
Right... we've seen him crash Aimee's party in s1, sit in a corner at a dance in s2, sit outside a party in s2... this kid is always off to the side or outside... always by himself in the quiet. I don't think a party let alone a loud club is a place Adam would want to go to... period. It (again) has nothing to do with how comfortable he is with his queerness.
BUT everything Adam does that Eric doesn't like must mean that he's still not "out enough" whatever that means.
Really their relationship did not read in terms of behavior as a couple who are splitting because one is totally out and one is still kinda in the closet. It read as an extrovert and an introvert who just aren't meant to be.
Eric in s3 was just so gatekeepy regarding queerness...
*I am about to go off on a unrelated tangent*
But Adam in s4 was just SO DAMN poorly done. His entire storyline is separate except for one ep... which kind of didn't make sense for him to be in because we haven't seen him interact with Aimee since they broke up in s1.
They did the most stereotypical thing and had the bi guy start off with a chick, realize he's also into dudes, then get with another chick. THIS BOY NEEDS A FRIEND! But they wrote off Rahim and Ola... and eh didn't hang out with Ruby who also clearly needed a friend.
And guess we're pretending he didn't have a whole storyline in s3 about trying better in school... and also that awesome English teacher wouldn't notice he probably is dyslexic...
I got off topic. This is just bothering me.
