so you know those fake daughter, real daughter cnovels? switched at birth, one poor family, one rich family, blah blah blah, whatever.

i keep vividly remembering this one qt arc where it's exactly this scenario, in which the 'real daughter' wasn't taken back to the wealthy family because the 'fake daughter' made a fuss about it. eventually, the real daughter dies, and everyone blames the fake daughter for it, because if she had not thrown a tantrum, the real daughter would have been taken back earlier and have received medical treatment on time.

but...

it's not her fault? sure, it was kind of selfish for her to, ah, 'prevent the real daughter from returning', sure -- but she didn't scheme? she just got upset? and OF COURSE she got upset? she was a child? a TEENAGER, at most?

she was a kid. she didn't have any authority in the family, nor was she one of those geniuses who actively sabotaged the other party. she just didn't want another person replacing her. if anyone was at fault at all, shouldn't it be the parents?

the parents are adults, even that older brother who blamed her was an adult, and you're blaming her for a decision you made?

novels like this always BLAME one of the kids. it's always 'the fake child' vs 'the real child'. one of them needs to be evil, one of them needs to be pushed out of place. it's unjust for the 'real child' to intrude, because the 'fake child' has been loved for 15 years and how could you love a stranger; it's unjust for the 'fake child' to be there, because they were never supposed to be there to begin with. 'the real child' is boorish, low quality, and of course they are, because they've been raised outside for 15 years; 'the fake child' is boorish, low quality, and of course they are, because all of that low-class mud running in their veins.

and then at least one of them begins the fight for their parents' attention, because they're afraid that if they don't, only one of them will get any attention at all, and the narrative proves them right.

isn't it wrong to blame the children? shouldn't somebody point it it's the family's fault for treating, or being manipulated into treating, one of their children like shit?

i don't think i've really seen a novel that points this out. maybe they exist, but not among the ones i've read. that qt novel i was thinking of treats the 'fake daughter' the most sympathetically I've seen -- she was just a regular girl that felt bad that she was getting less attention from her family and that boy she liked! she would have gotten over it if people were nice to her! -- and even then, her parents don't fucking let her come home because she reminds them too much of the 'real daughter' dying.

isn't there a novel where they get along? or maybe they fight at first and then their parents sit them down and go "hey guys, fucking quit it" and then, i don't know, they all go to therapy together? why does one of them have to be fucking evil?

i mean come on.

Very random but Jake has definitely brought the phrase“do as I say not as I do” with him and I feel like it was received with mixed reviews from the clan

THAT'S A GOOD ONE.

My set director in high school used to say this before doing the worst things you'd ever seen in your entire life, and that's what I picture. Here is an example:

So yeah, no war Jake is taking his sons over to the river and saying "do as I say, not as I do" and belly flopping from so fucking high up. He's taking the clan to the new Hometree and it's perfect except for this one little branch in the way. Jake pauses and stops and turns to the clan and saying "do as I say, not as I do" and then Neytiri says "please no" and then he just fucking JUMPS at it to break it off with his weight.

Here are things my set director (Ben) did that Jake Sully also does (its like my dad but different):

-when the Omaticaya are breaking the RDA technology down from dangerous places in the forest to clear everything out and return the land to it's original state, everyone gets to see Jake at his most feral. He twists his ankle trying to walk half an AMP suit over to Norm like stilts to cheer up some young warriors.

-Instead of letting that stop him, he then has them help him get a Sampson down from a tree. His grand plan is to get in it as a weight and just shake it until it falls, because it's "not that high". He makes Tarsem get in one side as a counter balance and they both shake the thing and then when it does fall Tarsem falls on his ankle and makes it worse. It was entirely Jake's fault. but obviously Tarsem is highly embarrassed.

-The entire clan leave this experience thinking their new Olo'eyktan is literally out of his mind, but also the young warriors did laugh a lot of times.

-One time, Jake, Spider, Neteyam, and Lo'ak are carving in the forest and Jake nicks his thumb. He sends Lo'ak to get him something from Mo'at and as soon as Lo'ak is out of sight he JUMPS UP and writes 'help' in his own blood on a tree and makes Neteyam and Spider hide with him so Lo'ak will think they were taken by a ghost.
