Ribbons
Ribbons I cut the ribbons from my life to mark the pagesof the loves that made me cry, of the sleeplessnights knowing everyone has gone, from fieldsemptied over many years. I bravely look on. I wonder, will you remember my warm hand onyour hand, cooling as you slept away from me,the ribbon that kept us together now in a boxon my desk. The color of my life without you. I learned how to not grow…

Sinnvolle Maßnahme mit einmal mehr coronaverklebtem Hirn: Einfach den alten Fluss dahinfließen lassen. Und dahinfließen. Macht er sowieso. Und die Handlung ist eh nicht so wichtig. Diesmal wieder in Technicolor.

I read 93 books this year!! Over triple the amount of last year (29), so I’d like to give my ten favourite books I read to close out this year on the very last day!
The Whimbrel House series by Charlie N. Holmberg (only the first two but!) (YES I’m allowed to do series!!)
Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones
The Clockmaker’s Daughter by Kate Morton
Leeward by Katie Daysh (19th century naval queer fiction and is promising to be the start of a series)
The Gower Street Detective series by MRC Kasasian (my absolute favourite of the lot by far) (a tongue-in-cheek 19th century PERSONAL detective and his assistant handling really fucked up gory cases. It’s very funny (seriously!) and the detective is lovably awful and grows through the series)
One Night in Hartswood by Emma Denny (queer story set in the 14th century!)
Queen of Scots: The True Life of Marie de Guise by John Guy (nonfiction)
Edward III: The Perfect King (nonfiction)
Midnight Rising: John Brown and the Raid That Sparked the Civil War by Tony Horwitz (nonfiction)
Trials of the Earth: The True Story of a Pioneer Woman by Mary Mann Hamilton (nonfiction) (bring hankies 😢)

Gower Wassail performed by Steeleye Span
from my Yule playlist
A-wassail, a-wassail throughout all the town Our cup it is white and our ale it is brown Our wassail is made of the good ale and cake Some nutmeg and ginger, the best we could bake
Our wassail is made of the elderberry bough And so my good neighbors we'll drink unto thou Besides all on earth, you'll have apples in store Pray let us come in for it's cold by the door...
We hope that your apple trees prosper and bear So that we may have cider when we call next year And where you have one barrel we hope you'll have ten So that we may have cider when we call again
There's a master and a mistress sitting down by the fire While we poor wassail boys stand here in the mire Come you pretty maid with your silver headed pin Pray open the door and let us come in
It's we poor wassail boys so weary and cold Please drop some small silver into our bowl And if we survive for another new year Perhaps we may call and see who does live here
We know by the moon that we are not too soon And we know by the sky that we are not too high And we know by the stars that we are not too far And we know by the ground that we are within sound

Another bit from my current Dragon Age project featuring Cullen Rutherford and Anyssa McBride (my OC).
A verbal confrontation with a woman from Cullen’s past causes Anyssa to remember things from her life on Earth she would rather forget. Concerned for her, the Commander searches for the historian as both realize somethings need to change or they will never have the future they both want.
(Not edited)
~ ~ ~
“Are you angry with me?” The question came out with her permission, a reflex from Earth she had tried hard to stop. She didn’t want anything from her relationship with Bryan to influence anything she did in Thedas but his ghost still lingered. “I mean—I ran from you—”
A thumb pressed lightly to her lips silenced her. “I am not angry with you and you need not ask such a thing. I believe I know why you did and why you ran but it does not matter. We are here now. Together. And you are not the only one who…is still haunted by parts of their past.”
She watched as he bowed his head. “Cullen, what—Don’t we need to talk about—”
“I cannot,” he said. “Not yet. I will—We will but we need some time. You need rest and I need to—to take care of something.”
McBride felt a bolt of fear strike her at his words, doubts about how he felt about her filling her mind. The Commander moved back, startled by her sudden movement. She cupped his face in both hands as she leaned her forehead against his as he had earlier in the garden. “Please don’t…Don’t leave. Don’t say you don’t want more…Please don’t say this has changed what you want with me. Please?”
Anyssa felt him stiffen under her touch as she realized just how much she wanted his words to Gower to be true. My choice is to have a future…with Nyssa. When he didn’t response she murmured, “I want to have a future with you too.”
She heard his breath hitch as she tilted her head, her nose bumping against his. Her lips grazed his for just a moment until she was gently pushed away just a few inches. Anyssa made a noise of disappointment mixed with confusion as she watched the Commander close his eyes. He swallowed, his Adam’s apple bobbing up and down as he held onto her tightly. Confused and a little hurt as his apparent rejection, she opened her mouth to ask what was wrong when he stopped her.
“I can’t, Nyssa,” he admitted with a voice full of raw emotion. “No matter how much I want what you almost did, I can’t right now. We aren’t thinking straight. There’s been too much—Too much has happened tonight. I hope you can understand that.”
“But I—Isn’t that what you wanted?”
His golden brown eyes opened to meet her confused gaze. “Maker, yes. Of course I want that. I want that and so much more but I—I let her hurt you. I put you in that situation. I made you remember things you didn’t want to. I can’t give you what you need right now. I feel lost and I—”
Finally she understood. He blamed himself for Gower’s actions and for everything that had happened. Did he share some of the blame? Probably. Was he responsible for everything? No. McBride knew she could have done more including not pushing him that morning to meet with the woman in the first place. Quietly, she said as she moved one of her hands to cards her fingers through his curling hair, “I—I understand. I just don’t want to pretend that there isn’t already more between us anymore. I can’t. Not after what happened.”
She felt Cullen take a shaky breath before he said, “Neither do I but I need some time. Just a little bit to process what happened. To make sure I do not make another mistake. I need to know I can give you what you need.”
“What about what you need?” she asked as he gently pushed her back down to the mattress.
He gave her a weak smile. “She’s right in front of me.”
She returned his smile with a tired one of her own, feeling better than she had in hours. As he re-tucked her in, she said, “Don’t leave without telling me.”
“I promise, Nys,” he said as he leaned over and kissed her temple. “I’m right where I want to be.”

There are multiple risk factors for the development of osteoporosis. These include but are not limited to advanced age, cigarette smoking, chronic glucocorticoid therapy, low body weight, previous fractures, history of rheumatoid arthritis, and excessive alcohol intake.
Antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) are associated with adverse effects on bone health. The AEDs most commonly associated with altered bone metabolism are those that induce the cytochrome P450 enzyme system. Specifically, the AED phenytoin has a direct inhibitory effect on intestinal calcium absorption and can stimulate osteoclastic bone resorption.
A score of less than -2.5 on DEXA scanning would indicate osteoporosis, a score of -1.0 to -2.5 would indicate osteopenia, and a score greater than -1.0 indicates normal bone density. Additionally, a fragility fracture (fracture from minor trauma such as a fall from a standing height or less) is diagnostic of osteoporosis without any further workup.
Bottom Line: The risk factors for osteoporosis include advanced age, cigarette smoking, chronic glucocorticoid therapy, physical inactivity, poor intake of calcium and vitamin D, body weight less than 127 lb, previous fractures, anticonvulsant use, hyperthyroidism, celiac disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and excessive alcohol intake.
The characteristic need for the child to use his hands to push himself to an upright position when arising from the floor is the Gower sign. It results from weakness in the proximal lower extremity muscles. Physical examination reveals pseudohypertrophy of the calf, lumbar lordosis, a waddling gait, shortening of the Achilles tendons, hypotonia, and hyporeflexia or areflexia. Patients usually use wheelchairs by age 12 or 13. Additional complications include delayed growth, dilated cardiomyopathy, increased fractures, progressive scoliosis with impaired pulmonary function, cognitive impairment, and eventual respiratory insufficiency.
Bottom Line: Elevated laboratory markers in the setting of Duchenne muscular dystrophy include serum creatine kinase, aspartate aminotransferase, and alanine transaminase.
COMBANK Insight: DMD is a progressive, myopathic disorder inherited in an X-linked, recessive fashion and caused by a defective gene on the X chromosome responsible for dystrophin production. Dystrophin normally serves to stabilize and prevent the breakdown of muscle fibers. Loss of dystrophin thus leads to muscle fiber degeneration, resulting in muscle weakness.
Wilson Disease, also known as hepatolenticular degeneration, is an autosomal recessive defect involving an ATPase, Cu2+ -transporting, β-polypeptide. In this disease state, copper is deposited in tissues of the brain, liver, kidneys, and Descemet membrane of the cornea (known as Kayser-Fleischer rings, which are seen in the exhibit). Parkinsonian-like tremor and dementia may be evident when the nervous system is affected. Renal tubular damage occurs in the kidneys and cirrhosis can develop in the liver. Diagnosis can be made with the observation of decreased serum ceruloplasmin. Treatment includes penicillamine, which creates a soluble complex with the metal that can be excreted through the urine.
Bottom Line: A Kayser-Fleischer ring is a golden brown ring observed in the Descemet layer of the cornea as a result of copper deposition and is seen in Wilson disease. Labs reveal low serum ceruloplasmin and treatment with penicillamine can stop the progression of this degenerative disease state.
The types of cancers that metastasize to the bone most commonly are lung, breast, thyroid, renal, and prostate. Multiple myeloma and lymphoma can both form lytic lesions from their origins within the marrow.
A SPEP and UPEP are sensitive for multiple myeloma and should be obtained along with a measurement of the patient's total protein and globulin levels.
Bottom Line: The initial workup of a new lytic lesion generally involves a CT chest/abdomen/pelvis, SPEP/UPEP, bone scan, basic labs, and mammogram or PSA

FEATURE CAR - NEXT LEVEL - Ziff Hudson's vicious Vette runs 3s in the 1/8th! Ziff Hudson is one of those names that seems to always be the topic of conversation in the world of small-tire drag racing. He’s fast and he wins.  He started racing at the tender age of 17 in his '71 small block nitrous-assisted Nova, dominating local street car classes at several tracks. While life took hold, he took some time off for his two girls and started his towing company at age 21; Ziff never lost the addiction to drag racing. SUPER COUPE - Corey Binkiewicz' first build went way further than he could have ever imagined. After a steep learning curve at young age, hopping up his 1990 Ford Thunderbird Super Coupe came naturally to Corey Binkiewicz, so he ran with it. “My parents always said my first word was ‘car’,” Corey said with a smile, “My dad was always working cars or the house and I was familiar with tools, etc. So, once I was old enough to get in trouble, I was constantly taking things apart to see how they worked or if there was a way to ‘soup’ them up.” ICONIC - This stunning 1985 Chevy C10 has a blown small block to go along with its good looks! Third Gen, Square Body, C-Series, no matter what you want to call them, Chevrolet’s 1973 to 1991 model full size pickups have become iconic and are now one of their most sought after generations of trucks. They are getting snapped up for street machines and street/strip builds alike and this low-slung 1985 C10 of Chad Gower is an example of the latter. It snowballed from his first vehicle that he drove daily through high school and college, into a nasty blown small block that he can take his kids out for ice cream in and then go hurt some feelings at the track. SUPER KID - Drag racers take note, there's a new kid in town, and his name is....Most every story in the world of fast cars and motorsports starts with something like, “I have been into anything with wheels since I was a kid”. For Brodie “Super Kid” Brown, it all started on his 1st birthday when he was given a Pocket bike. While he couldn’t ride it yet, his parents Jackie and Rob would push him around on the front lawn of their property. HIDDEN GEM - Barry Cunningham's 1940 Willys Coupe - HOT ROD DREAM - Barry Cunningham’s 1940 Willys is one sweet ride! Barry chose the cool hot rod rake with the rear sitting just a bit higher than the front. The Willys is just one of those cars that you can get way with darn near anything when it comes to stance. #ziffhudson #C7corvette #Iconic #Supercoupe #Barrycunningham #coreybinkiewicz #brodiebrown #chadgower #nextlevel #hiddengems #rpmmag #rpmmagazine #rpm25yrs Read the full article

Encyclopedia Brown thoughts: book 19
Encyclopedia Brown and the Case of the Two Spies
The Case of the Kidnapped Dog:
NGL, Royal Blackie is actually a pretty cool name.
Nice to see modern technology like laser printers finally coming into play.
"The ransom note doesn't appear to be written by a college graduate." Wow, snobby much, Encyclopedia?
The Case of the Fireflies:
Random fact: I like fireflies because they remind me of the adorable Hotaru Tomoe from Sailor Moon.
Another fly-catching girl? At least the first one didn't have a cutesy alliterative nickname...
On a related note, I would not want to be called Fannie.
What kind of medical research could be done with firefly abdomens?
The Case of the Duck Derby:
Another case where the title has nothing to do with the actual crime... :P
Of course, we're forced to read about the irrelevant duck derby as if anyone cares.
And then it turns into yet another attempt by Bugs to frame Encyclopedia. It's like Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner, except without the funny.
The Case of the Sand Castle:
Sobol really does a good job of making Kevin look like the vandal, so I was actually surprised when it turned out not to be him, especially when he won the competition.
It works especially well because returning antagonist Tessie Bottoms is hot for him.
Tessie has a poodle named Cuddles? Aww, super cute!
The Case of the Stolen Wallet:
Benny Breslin cases are possibly even more boring than Lucy Fibbs cases, and unlike Lucy, Benny is a regular throughout the series. :(
Todd and Garth aren't quick thinkers, which, in Sobol's elitist world, automatically means that they're guilty.
Is this new tent the one that Gower bought him after The Case of the Leaking Tent?
Kind of ironic that Benny is a Detroit Lions fan, since his first case was also the last mention of the Lions gang.
Speaking of that first case, remember when Benny was into architecture? Because Sobol sure doesn't, any more than J.K. Rowling remembered Ron being a chess champion after book 1.
The Case of the Manhole Cover:
Is Lizzie Downing related to Mr. Downing from The Case of the Old Calendars?
Some of the background Wilford cases seem more interesting than the ones that are actually covered.
How would anyone get this solution? The only way I could think of that someone could get it would be by actually making a square manhole cover and attempting to drop it down a manhole, then doing the same with a regular round cover.
The Case of the Two Spies:
Nice touch, bringing back the Martin Inn from The Case of the Bank Robber, and confirming that it really is the crap-hole I assumed it was.
@brownencyclopedia: The reason that there's an FBI tail on Hudson isn't just because he quit his job. Hudson was working at a defense plant, and was likely proxy to confidential information. If I were a defense contractor, I'd want to keep tabs on all current and former employees, and would probably be required by the government to do so anyway.
The Case of the Violinist's Chair:
Xanikis is a really cool last name...
...and Taggart is a really cool name, period.
Finally, a non-teenaged bully with a given age. Specifically, because he's "the sixth-grade bully", he's eleven or twelve.
If Francis Xanathippe is so famous, how come we've never heard of him until now?
Why couldn't Taggart come up with some explanation for the FX on the chair where it wasn't initials?
The Case of the Stolen Coin:
What does this rare-coin club do at meetings when they don't show a favorite coin?
