Virginia State University Will Host A General Election Presidential Debate For The First Time
For the first time in U.S. history, a general election presidential debate will be hosted at a historically Black college or university.
The Commission on Presidential Debates announced Monday that Virginia State University in Petersburg will host the second debate of the 2024 general election cycle Oct. 1.
“We are honored and grateful to have been chosen as a host for a 2024 Presidential Debate,” VSU President Makola M. Abdullah said in a news release. “This is a historic moment for our university and for HBCUs nationwide.”
Additional debates will be hosted at Texas State University — a Hispanic-serving institution — on Sept. 16 and the University of Utah on Oct. 9, the commission said. A vice presidential debate will be held at Lafayette College in Pennsylvania on Sept. 25.
“In 2024, students at our four debate sites will help bring another set of historic conversations to audiences here and abroad. And their campuses will anchor four unique chances to listen and learn,” the commission said in a statement announcing the locations. -(source: nbc news)

Bowie State University is a public HBCU in Prince George's County, north of Bowie. It is part of the University System of Maryland. Founded in 1865, Bowie State is Maryland's oldest HBCU and one of the ten oldest in the country. Bowie State is a member school of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. It was founded on January 9, 1865, by the Baltimore Association for the Moral and Educational Improvement of Colored People as a teaching school. The school first used space at the African Baptist Church at Calvert Street and Sarasota Street. In 1867, a dedicated facility was purchased nearby Sarasota Street and Courtland Street, and the school was formally named the Baltimore Normal School for Colored Teachers. After being reorganized in 1883 as the Baltimore Normal School, it educated African Americans to be teachers for African American students until 1908. The school became a state institution of teaching under the Maryland State Department of Education and was redesignated as a Normal School No. 3. The school was renamed Bowie State University in 1988, as a member of the University System of Maryland. In the subsequent decades, Bowie continued to expand, especially in professional and STEM fields. In 1992, it became the first HBCU to expand overseas, with graduate programs for military personnel stationed abroad. By 2017, the school offered 20+ undergraduate majors and 30+ advanced degrees or certificate programs. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence #hbcu https://www.instagram.com/p/CnMcuVQL83G/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Poly!Bakusquad with a black!Femme majorette dancing reader
Tumblr media
Poly! Bakusquad x Majorette dancer 💥🦈👽⚡️📦
You might be the majorette, but These goofballs are your biggest cheerleaders 📣
You met them studying abroad in Japan one summer and umm...needless to say, it was an interesting summer when you came home with 5 partners
But your fine little brown skinned ass just made that much of an impression on them
Youre hella excited to take them to their first homecoming at an HBCU because it’ll be your first time performing for them
During the week leading up to it though, y’all all enjoy the various house parties, events, and games leading up to the big game
👽 What’s a kick back?
You: it’s like a small get together
📦 So a party?
You: not quite
💥 Oi! I wanna go to the concert
You: 😳 sir, do you know how much those tickets cost?
💥 I ain’t ask all that. I’m payin for all of us anyway
🦈 Can we go to the step show too?
You: Sure!
⚡️ Cool! What’s that?
Your poor tink thinks. You have to educate them through all of this, meanwhile, you still have to find time to rehearse
Luckily Mina is on top of it. She picks up your routine’s fast and dances with you. Meanwhile, the boys are more than happy to help y’all practice
⚡️ Pop harder ladies 👀 🤤
🦈 Dont forget those 8 counts babes 😏
💥 Poke it out a little more for us 😏
👽 Guys if we poke it out any harder, we’re gonna dislocate something
📦 Aye no pain no gain, amors.
Eventually, their nasty asses end up grinding on both of y’all.
The day of the big show, everybody is helping out.
Mina does your makeup, Sero is packing your costumes, Denki is putting snacks in your bag, Bakugo is fixing your weave, and Kirishima is givin you a pep talk
When you finally take the field, your partners take up an entire bench with a giant glittery banner that you didn’t even know they had. It’s literally so big they had to enlist other people on their row to hold it
But lord, nothing compares to when you hit your solo
👽 GET IT BOO! YAAASSSS YOU BETTA BUCK FO YO LIIIIFEEEE
💥 THATS MY MF BABY RIGHT THERE 🤬🤬 LETS FUCKIN GO!!!
⚡️WOOOO Y/N!!!
🦈 HIT THOSE EIGHT COUNTS BABEEE
📦 YOU BETTER CATCH THAT BATON, BABE!!!
They’re an absolute embarrassment, and you wouldn’t have it any other way
Once the game is over, they meet you with a giant blanket, water, and snacks and you guys head out to eat before heading back your student apartment
Back home, your partners completely big you up
🦈 You were amazing y/n
💥 the best god damn dancer out there
Mina removes your makeup and helps you wrap your hair up for bed while the boys rub your sore feet and shoulders
Your partners absolutely love supporting you and watching your shows, and you love their crazy asses right back

Two years ago I was at a crossroads in life. My music career and efforts to mentor youth in the community had reached a dead end. I felt that even though people said otherwise, who would take me serious about studying and dedication to goals when I didn’t finish my own degree? Plus, I had dormant skills that weren’t being honed properly and it was time to humble myself and learn from experts. That’s when I decided to return to school at @morganstateu and I couldn’t of made a better choice. Bear-TV and @weaa889 gave me platforms to do just that and the amazing teachers of @sgjc_msu guided me to this point. I am now on my way to study abroad in Cape Town, South Africa for my final semester as a Morgan student and I cannot wait to tell the final part of this chapter in my Senior Capstone project. Thank you God for not giving up on me...I’ll be back to walk across that stage in May🙏🏾 . . . #personal #testimony #sunzulu #weaa #music #baltimore #msu #morganstateuniversity #hbcu #sgjc #communication #journalism #college #crossroads #story (at WEAA - 88.9 FM: The Voice of the Community) https://www.instagram.com/p/B8lcGowJhyr/?igshid=1rzrg3bf8ia0f

I don’t remember if I ever mentioned that I went to the SWE national conference this year but I did and it was my first time at the conference and I’d like to talk about how amazing it was.
So first of all, I went by myself and arranged my own travel and lodging and everything. My school’s chapter went, but they only take a limited number of students and I didn’t want to miss out if I didn’t get chosen so I decided to go alone. This meant that I didn’t stay in one of the hotels near the convention center, but rather a smaller, cheaper hotel 20 minutes away. I did get a room to myself though, even if it smelled like ass and cigarettes. I registered early and used a coupon I found online, so my conference registration only ended up being like $70, and then I donated like $10 because why not. I tracked flight prices for a while and got a pretty cheap flight to MN.
My main reason for going to the conference was for the career fair. I’d heard a lot of people saying that getting an interview and an offer from their career fair was pretty easy, and as someone who’s set to graduate in May 2019, I NEED A JOB DAMMIT. Besides the career fair, there were a lot of great workshops and panels scheduled that I was excited about. They had panels about working abroad, communication in the workplace as a woman, working in govt, etc. Like every day every hour there was one of these going on. I was overwhelmed.
The conference was amazing. I didn’t get to go to as many of the panels and workshops as I had planned, mainly because I underestimated how exhausted I would be. There are so many networking opportunities, both with recruiters and just other students. I was using this luggage tag maker and next thing I knew, this lady was taking down my info to connect me with her friend who works for a company I had just interviewed for.
The career fair was packed and was honestly super overwhelming, but I was determined. I had three interviews scheduled for the conference before I even got there because recruiters reached out to me because they saw my resume and profile in the SWE career center online. (OMG PLS USE THE CAREER CENTER IT IS HONESTLY THE EASIEST THING EVER AND RECRUITERS STILL EMAIL ME ABOUT POSITIONS). The funny thing about the career fair is that I talked to so many big (and small) companies that I wouldn’t usually have the confidence to talk to in my own school career fair. I don’t have a great GPA and only had one internship, so I’m not very competitive compared to some other students. But at SWE, I just talked to whoever lol. I figured, I spent so much money to get here, so why the hell not??? And that’s how I ended up in line for over an hour to talk to a major aerospace defense company that I just knew would turn me down. I didn’t get asked to come in for an interview with them, but I did go to their networking event and talked to a bunch of recruiters and higher ups. I ultimately did not get an offer from them from this event, but I did get hired from them like THREE WEEKS LATER ON THE SPOT AT A RECRUITING EVENT ON MY CAMPUS. The other students from my school who went all got interviews too, and many of them walked away with job/internship offers. Someone won a free flight with united.
Anyway so beyond the endless job hunting, I also want to say that literally everyone I met at SWE was so nice. AND OMFG THERE WERE OTHER GIRLS IN MECHANICAL AND AEROSPACE ENGINEERING. I WANTED TO JUST HUG THEM ALL I WAS SO HAPPY. And I met some engineering students from Liberia too, so that was exciting and we connected later on LinkedIn.
My only not-so-great note (and it’s not a criticism of SWE or anything, it’s just what it is I guess) was that there were barely any black people there, which honestly shocked me because I go to an HBCU and my whole chapter is black besides like one person so to go there and not see many other black students was a suprise lol. A “funny” thing that happened was when I went to go meet up with the some of the girls from my school (who I didn’t know very well) at one of the luncheons and I couldn’t find them bc I wasn’t sure what they looked like. I found a table with like two black girls sitting by themselves and assumed they went to my school and that’s how I met the students from Liberia and realized the girls from my school were at a completely different luncheon in a different location 🙃
BUT THE CONFERENCE WAS SO GREAT AND IF YOU ARE A WOMAN IN ENGINEERING I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT. GOOGLE HAS TRAVEL GRANTS FOR IT AND IM SURE THERE ARE OTHER SCHOLARSHIPS/GRANTS TOWARDS IT TOO. PLS GO IF YOU ARE ABLE.
feel free to message me if you have any other questions about my experience. i  could literally talk about forever.
