The Guan Yu Statue is a large monument to Chinese deified military general Guan Yu located in Jingzhou, China. The statue was designed by Han Meilin, and finished construction in 2016.[1] It stands at 58 metres tall, weighs 1,197 tonnes, and is made of around 4,000 bronze strips.[2] The project began in 2013 when Han Meilin visited Jingzhou for inspiration, and personally oversaw the designing and installing of the statue. [...] Inside the base is a 7,710 square-metre museum and shrine to Guan Yu.

Guan Yu, as portrayed in the 14th century Chinese historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, is the basis for the character Portor / Kan-U in Capcom’s arcade beat-em-up video game Warriors of Fate / Tenchi wo Kurau 2: Sekiheki no Tatakai (”The Devouring of Heaven and Earth II: Battle of Red Cliffs”).

“…And because of this expectation to succeed in traditional Chinese families, this leads to them putting this pressure of expectation onto their children, mostly the first-born, if I’m completely honest. And due to this, this commonly leads to a cycle of trauma that passes down from generation to generation, with this strictness and expectation to succeed a lot of the time turning into downright abuse.

A good example of this whole 'Chinese family cycle of trauma' thing is with Meilin Li's family in Turning Red, with the whole thing about 'hiding the red panda' being a metaphor for this trauma. Granted, there's no abuse, because this is a kids' movie, but my point at least somewhat stands here-

Chinese Zodiac Art Exhibition. Han Meilin ( 韓美林). 2019.

To welcome the Year of the Pig, the Palace Museum in Beijing is holding the Chinese Zodiac Art Exhibition featuring the works of Han Meilin. On display are his paintings, sculptures, calligraphy, pottery, ironwork, wood carving, and folk handicrafts on the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac: rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig. On until February 20, the Palace Museum will also hold cultural events and festivals to complement the exhibit.

A new series of postage stamps to commemorate the Lunar New Year were also designed by Han Meilin for China Post. The concept this year is “home” combined with the characteristics of the pig. The first stamp called, Ample Blessings of the Fattened Pig, shows an energetic pig with a dynamic pose. The second stamp, Gathering of Five Blessings, shows a family of pigs to symbolize love for family.

Han Meilin is Chinese artist born on 1936, in Shandong, China. He is most known for creating the Fuwa dolls for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. Having lived through difficult times during the Cultural Revolution in China,  Han was also named UNESCO Artist for Peace in 2015.
