This fic is so special to me. It has one of my favourite lines from a fic of all time - “you don’t realize what the world is doing to you until long after it’s already done”.

Ever since his publishing company and Eddie's merged, the man has been nothing but a pain in Buck's ass. The way he nitpicks all of Buck's company emails, the way he spends half his day bickering with Buck, the way he makes Buck's stomach flip and the way he's started haunting Buck's dreams... yeah, it's one hundred percent hate. Definitely. Buck's sure of it.

Because what the hell else could it be?

Notes: I really love this one. It kinda has the vibes of “The Proposal”- the plot is very different, but it has that same office rivalry that movie has (tags say it’s inspired by “The Hating Game”, but I haven’t watched it, so It’s probably closer to that, but I’m just comparing what I know lol). Anyway, it features a lot bantering and some massive miscommunication. Not to mention the author does a phenomenal job of depicting the tension between Buck and Eddie then beautifully developing their relationship.

Words Fall Short (Tongue Tied and Lonely)

AKA The Miscommunication Fic

Buddie | 9-1-1 on Fox | 13k words | angst with a happy ending, buck is an unreliable narrator, fridge-related angst, eddie is a little bit oblivious

Buck misoverhears Eddie complaining to Hen at work and presumes the worst. He slowly starts to phase himself out of Eddie's life and Eddie doesn't know why.

Buck doesn’t like to jinx things but even he can admit that it has been a pretty good day. The sun has been shining, the calls have been routine and few and far between, and with the end of their shift closing in, he is lined up to spend the evening with his two favorite Diaz boys for their obligatory Friday movie night. Of course, just as often seems to happen in Buck’s life, just as things are looking up, something comes along to ruin it.

"He's just always there." He hears Eddie complain and Buck's heart immediately stops, as do his feet as he comes to a halt just behind the bunk room door.

"What do you mean?" Hen is there too, with Eddie.

"I dunno, Hen. He's Buck, you know what he's like." Eddie sounds exasperated and Buck is having flashbacks to the grocery store and you're exhausting . "He's always there, cooking us dinner, driving Chris to school, buying our groceries, sleeping on my couch."

Buck instantly wracks his brain, trying to remember the last time he slept at his loft. He knows he was there on Tuesday but that was just to water his plants and pick up an extra work shirt. He still went back to Eddie's that night, made the pasta recipe he found on Facebook, and—slept on Eddie's couch.

God, how has he not noticed? No wonder Eddie is annoyed, Buck hasn't given them a night to themselves in weeks. Eddie probably wants to spend time with his son, relax by himself, hell, do his laundry without Buck chattering away about narwhals the entire time.

Buck's heart feels like a small, fragile thing in his chest, barely beating and cold as ice. He turns on his heel and decides he’ll sleep on the couch in the loft instead. When Eddie asks him later whose vehicle they're driving home in, he apologizes and pretends that he has a meeting with his landlord that he forgot and bows out of movie night. He'll make it up to Chris later, maybe take him to the zoo next week — if Eddie's okay with that. Maybe that's still him being too much .

He ignores the pinched and confused look on Eddie's face at his dismissal and quickly shouts goodbye to the rest of the crew before ducking out to his Jeep and driving back to his loft.

The loft, not home. He hasn't referred to it in his head as home in months. Home is lego-covered floors and three pairs of shoes by the door. Home is Finding Nemo and bedtime stories and beers on the porch under the glow of the inside light. Eddie’s house has been Buck’s home for longer than he realized and now he feels like an intruder. He had carved out a space for himself without a thought about how Eddie would feel about having his home invaded. Well, Buck will not be a stowaway any longer.

The loft is cold and still when he unlocks the door, kicking the pile of junk mail and bills aside with his foot as he enters. After a shower, he finds an old, scratchy sweatshirt and the pair of joggers that shrunk in the wash to be the only 'comfy' clothes left in his drawer.

He traipses into the kitchen to start prepping dinner. He hopes that keeping his hands busy will distract him from the ghost of Taylor that still clings to the walls of his apartment. He doesn’t miss her, not the way he thinks he should. They ended on good terms, good for what it could have been — with his penchant for deflection and her love of sharp words. But he’s spent the last six months trying to move forward, to become comfortable alone in his skin. Learning how to fill his time without putting half his worth into what he can provide for someone else, for a significant other. But now, being back here in his empty loft, it feels like a step backward, like he’s not only been using Eddie’s hospitality but using Eddie as a scapegoat for Buck’s need to feel useful. God dammit .

His fridge is empty. There's a couple of carrots, half a jar of olives, and the leftover naan bread from the takeaways he and Eddie had for lunch the day they were both here because the plumber was at Eddie’s fixing a leak in his ceiling. That was three weeks ago and the naan is moldy. Get it together, Buckley.

Buck leans his elbows against the kitchen counter and presses the heels of his palms into his eyes. He tries to take the deep, even breaths that Doctor Copeland had taught him. He throws the naan in the trash, calls the Chinese place down the street to place an order, and munches on one of the carrots while he waits for the delivery guy to show up.

My notes: oh my. This was absolutely amazing. I adored how good of a friend Chim was and I loved reading more about Chimney and Eddie’s friendship. This fic made me laugh, cry, and cry while laughing. Some moments are absolutely hilarious and got me kicking my feet and giggling on the couch. 10000000% recommend this one. Adorable!

He eases his foot off the pedal and snips the thread, freeing his creation so he can try it on.

Ever since Jee watched Sleeping Beauty and Shrek for the first time she’s become obsessed with all things fantasy. Much to Maddie, Chim and Eddie’s amusement, Buck couldn’t help himself from buying her a sparkly dress (or three), as well as a tiara fit for pint-sized royalty.

Of course, once she had her clothes to play dress up, she needed a fearsome beast to battle. And, well, how was Buck supposed to be an effective dragon without his own wings?

OR There is a Princess, Knight, Dragon, Wizard and Damsel in Distress and there is nothing Uncle Buck won't do for his niece.

Buck, is everything alright?" Bobby asks and straightens himself up on his chair.

"Yeah… I'm— I'm…" Buck staggers on his feet and brings his hand to his head.

He looks like he's gonna pass out.

"You look like you're gonna p—"

"Woah, woah!"

Buck's eyes flutter and his knees buckle as the hand on his head goes limp and falls; but before Buck's weak body can collapse on the ground, Eddie springs to his feet and rushes towards Buck to catch him.

✨Teasy Tidbit Tuesday✨

They walked along the road, keeping to the tree line just in case someone did come along. They didn't talk much, all of them just focusing on putting one foot in front of the other despite their tired and battered bodies.

About an hour into their walk, Buck sidled up next to him, "Hey." He said, in a hoarse whisper.

"Hey." Chim replied, letting his shoulder knock against Buck's gently, "What's up?"

"I just-" Buck sighed, staring at his feet as they walked, "Chris made it back to Eddie, right? I'm not making that up?"

Chim felt pain squeeze his heart for a moment, this kid really just couldn't catch a break, could he?

"Yeah, he's with Eddie, and they're with Athena and Maddie." Chim answered, "We're going to meet up with them as soon as we figure out where we are."

Buck nodded for a second before pausing, and looking up hesitantly at Chim, "You- you found Maddie?"

Notes: A classic bodyguard and protectee romance. It’s something you can sink your teeth into. It also has Eddie being super gentle and caring and I always adore that. Plus, it has the whole firefam (or bandfam in this specific instance) being so supportive and loving. It is pretty Buck centric, so if you love Buck you’ll enjoy this. Eddie Diaz is my number one right now, but I still really enjoyed it. I really like and read a lot of canon divergence, but I like AU’s like this one to give me a much needed switch up every once in a while.
