I am super excited for the TTYD remake, so much so I looked through the trailer to see if I could find any differences, and there are quite a lot!

11. im honestly surprised they didnt change flurrie's design lol but i did notice they removed her jiggle physics (just like valentina from smb rpg rip) but i did notice her intro scene is zoomed and the petals are animated

12. there is a very smooth music transition between the overworld music and battle music, might just be a trailer thing though

13. Superguard has its own text instead of just saying 'great'

14. i noticed how goombella has new expression before the blooper boss fight, and then i noticed the partners have more expressions and so do the NPCs!

My love for writing does! ❤️ ✏️ As a writer, I have stories to tell and headcanons to share. I wanna make myself happy with them! Also, the works of others motivate me too. Whenever I see a really good fic or writing piece online, I go, "Wow, what this person wrote was SO amazing that I want to write my own amazing thing!"

Not only am I gonna share a snippet, I'm also gonna explain why I'm so proud of it.

Here it is:

... Brown eyes begin to sparkle at that fact. Caleb had no idea! He casts a smile down at his mother’s stomach, giving it a light pat.

“I’m so glad God decided to gift you to us, Philip,” Caleb “speaks” to his little brother.

This is from the short, canon divergent story I wrote titled "A New Addition".

In this scene, a (I'll say 5 since I didn't state his age in the story, but you can tell he's a small child) year old Caleb has just been told by his mother where baby's come from. Heaven! They're gifts from gods (her words).

The reason I'm so proud of this piece is because I love how sweet and sincere I made Little Caleb at the end. He's just so grateful that God gave Philip as a gift to him and his family and he can't wait to see / meet him. 🥹

It shows how Caleb has always loved Philip (even in his unborn baby state).

I think I'm best at making my audience have a good time! My writing, for the most part, is always fun and exciting. You'll never be bored when you read my stuff.

6. What is something in the writeblr community that is most enjoyable?

THE POSITIVITY POSTS THAT PEOPLE MAKE!!! I LOVE REBLOGGING THEM!!! I love how uplifting they are. Whenever I'm feeling down about my work, I go back to read them. They kinda inspire me to maybe make my own writer positivity blog. Maybe one day.😌

dream trip: idk!!!!! i am not really a trip planner unless it is a trip to see people. maybe a road trip all over the us to see all kinds of different places and people. that probably would be the dream actually. 

time: 6:15 p.m. rn 

anything i really want right now: FOR MY FAVORITE OVERALLS TO BE FIXED. FOR A NEW PAIR OF MY FAVORITE OVERALLS. THEY RIPPED IN THE THIGHS BC I AM TOO SEXY JUICY AND I GOT THEM PATCHED AND THEY RIPPED ALONG THE PATCH AND NOW I’M LIKE!!!!!! WHAT AM I GONNA DO. DO I GET THEM PATCHED AGAIN. HOW LONG CAN THIS CYCLE LAST. WHY CAN’T AMERICAN EAGLE OUTFITTERS SELL THESE OVERALLS AGAIN. I WILL BUY 47 PAIRS SO I CAN HAVE THEM UNTIL THE END OF MY DAYS IF ONLY THEY WOULD LET ME.

Hey everyone! Hucker down for a long, winding update where I will probably go on 101 off topic tangents.

Going to try start my update from most recent and go all the way back to my last personal post.

1. I finished my last semester of undergrad! I am happy, but not celebrating or feel that "accomplished." I have a long way to go until I finish my formal education. Additionally, I'm a pretty adamant "forever learning" mentality person. I now have my b.s in exercise science, and excited to work on a few more prerequisites before applying to grad programs.

2. My current goals are getting my CSCS certification and taking my RBT exam. Hoping to find some decent part time jobs in both these fields (behavioral therapy and being a personal trainer!)

3. I have been having some health issues. I have auto-immune issues since I was a child and a lot of hormonal issues. Without getting into what would be a novel of my medical history lol, I've been having extra cycles each month + with accompanying PMS syndrome. It made for some hell of a time for my mental health and my relationship. We have both been in low spots and taking it out on each other. Everytime we would get to the surface and breathe and try to "get back" to our sweet spot, either one of us would get short sighted with each other's feelings--it was like that paper cut or scrape on that highly tensed and mobile part of your body that would just somehow end up rebleeding after you thought it had finally scabbed.

4. The only left thing to tackle at our hobo house is(I'm gonna be calling it the hobo house from now on until.....it's done.) Installing the water heater + a framed cabinet to house the water heater, and patch up some drywall. We can't install baseboards until we tile the house, so we're gonna be taping those up to try to keep our heating bill low. But after that we're moving in. I pray we'll have our first night's sleep there by Dec. 28 lol.

5. I just ordered a baby Christmas tree and like a four foot strand of lights. It's not much, but it's gonna be cute and get the job done. Growing up I've been...on and off: homeless, parentless, struggling etc. So..holidays literally became nonexistant for my small family and I never felt owed but damn do I love holidays. Having this cute little tree guy is more exciting to me than this degree lmao.

6. I have a lot of time off now so I'll probably be posting some more house things, "vision" boards and low grade renderings of what I want the interior to look like. You will probably see a bit more of my own "photography" cringe lol.

but i’m also sad bc i had to throw out my favorite pair of sandals bc i literally wore them to death and had patched them up multiple times. And now my life is hard because which cute dress do I wear to go grocery shopping, just to show off my cute dress and how cute I am in dresses and how cool my tattoos are? I have like 6 cute dresses how am i supposed to choose!!!!!!

85 is like my ideal temperature lol. once i went to florida in june and while my friend was utterly screaming and dying because it was about 93, i was skipping about in my teeny tiny dress and little sandals having the best day of my LIFE!!!

Aw, thank you. I know I am most likely not annoying people with Phangs stuff. I just don't want to drive folks bonkers with it either lol. I am simultaneously my own biggest fan and my worst critic :P

And hair wise I actually booked myself an appointment this week! We'll see if I chicken out or not, but basically I am thinking of doing some sort of messy pixie cut.

I've been keeping my hair in a bob for the last 2 years while it was growing back in, and with some careful styling I was able to hide the patches where it didn't look like my hair would grow back. My hair is still thin in places and likely always will be, but it's no longer patchy and I have lots of new growth all over my scalp! The natural curl texture is also coming back too, so that's fun!

This does however highlight how scraggly my hair is past my ears and it's not a good look. I also developed a separate type of eczema on my scalp in the last year (just to keep things exciting lol), and need to wash my hair every day or my scalp starts to burn and my hair falls out. So y'know, that's a lot of washing, drying and when I don't want to look like I got dragged backward through a hedge, styling that I don't even like the look of when I'm done. And that's just energy I don't plain have.

Sooo... yeah. I am thinking of going full pixie cut so that it's something I can wash and dry in minutes instead of over an hour. And I'm aware it requires a lot of upkeep, but I used to get my hair trimmed every 6 weeks anyway before the pandemic, so that's not an issue for me.

I am however scared because change! Change is scary. But also I think some part of me just associates short hair with when all my hair straight up fell out due to illness, and I'm worried I'll just look sick rather than cute and idk. I am sitting with my emotions on that one.

I keep telling myself if I do it and I hate it, it'll grow out eventually. And in the meantime, there's always wigs lol.

I've been following this account and have been following the development of 'Our Life' for a few months now, and I just wanted to say thank you for all your hard work and dedication you have put into the game. It astonishes me how much choice you have during the sequence of Our Life and am excited to play the full version now, I am downloading it as I write this message. finished my first playthrough just now. it just felt so wholesome ??? 100/10 would do it again. i laughed. i cried. i got angry. i felt second-hand embrassment— i got so into it i was left in literal tears after getting my first ending. the art, the storyline, the music, and COVE HOLDEN– UGH IT WAS LITERAL PERFECTION ❤ THE WAIT WAS WORTH IT. So I was following you guys on itchio for years and uhh did I stay up til 6 am on a school night to finish the game? Yes. Did I sob my eyes out during step 3 as a 20 year old having doubts about life and adulthood? Absolutely. I can't form proper sentences right now due to lack of sleep but just wanted to say thank you for making it. I honestly feel lighter and I feel like it changed my views on future to be more optimistic... I can't wait to replay it! Thanks again!

Hi! I played through 'Our Life' yesterday and  I just wanna say how refreshing it was to be able to have Cove be 'high initiative' and also have so many opportunities to initiate affection from the player character! As a pretty flirtatious/affectionate person myself, I notice that a lot of VNs don't give players that agency, and affection can be kinda 'carrot on a stick' if that makes sense. You guys did an awesome job! I look forward to seeing if there are more of those moments in Step 3 & 4 :)

I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by the option to choose Cove's level of initiative in step 3! As much I love the option to choose I personally enjoy have the romanced character take the lead without my input so when I got to step 3 and had to option to make it so that Cove initiated affection without as much input from me I was really happy! You guys seriously added so much freedom in terms of choices, it's almost baffling that the only thing you have to pay for is optional DLC!

I absolutely loved everything about the game and I really want congratulate the team for making the game such a satisfying experience.

Ok, so I just finished Our Life and, wow. I have never cried at a video game before, ever. Thank you so, so much! Its one of my favorites.

this isn't a question, but i just wanted to say how much i enjoyed our life 🥺 i've been patiently looking forward to the full game for a few months now, and i couldn't be happier with it! i've only played through it once so far but the outcomes of the choices i made were all so soft and wholesome 💗 i can tell that everyone who was involved really worked hard and you all did an incredible job! i can't wait to see what else is in store 👍

Just wanted to say that Our Life really made me feel seen as an 18 year old trans man who's been struggling with change as of late and I can't thank you guys enough for it. I just finished the main story and currently released DLC's and gosh, I can really only say... woah. Just, woah. The messages are somehow exactly what I needed to hear right now, and they brought me a lot of comfort in this really weird and confusing time in my life. good people i have just finished Our Life and let me say, it was beautiful. rarely have such non-fantastical moments (and even some fantastical moments) brought me to tears like this game has, and i don't even have the dlc (yet). i don't know how you did it but it felt like i was playing a slice of life anime. i had waited with baited breath to play this since i played the demo and my expectations were not just met but surpassed. from the bottom of my heart thank you for this game

I found the game by chance and I am so so glad I did. It’s so inclusive and made me feel so incredibly seen. Seeing that my gender identity and sexuality were possible just meant the absolute world to me. I’ve never seen something like this and it just made me so incredibly happy. Hello! I downloaded Our life earlier this week and I'm only now getting the chance to play it (Very busy and stressful week) I'm so excited to play and I wanna say thank you for making this adorable game!

I just finished my first playthrough of Our Life and I can't even express how much I love it. Cove is absolutely precious and has killed me several times, and the art and soundtrack is beautiful. I love all the small different choices. I'm very interested in the Derek and Baxter DLCs and the rest, can't wait!!!!!!

I've been watching "Our Life: Beginnings & Always" development for quite some time, and I gotta say its wild to see it finally release. Its so unique in the way relationships work- even character creation. I've cried multiple times over this game while playing. I can't thank y'all enough for a game with these kind of mechanics, and representation. its rare I get to feel im really playing as myself in games like these. Everyones outdone themselves. this'll certainly be one I keep coming back to.

I've been following the development of Our Life from way back when the first demo dropped and it still blows my mind how many choices and customizations there are (love that update for the MC's bedroom btw!) and the fact that the game remembers them - it really feels like your very own coming of age story! I know this isnt exactly the main focus of the game, but i really love how we can customise the mc personality wise! This is the first time i've played a game like this where the mc actually does and says exactly what I would do and say in certain situations and its such a breath of fresh air!! It's also so cool how the other characters can pick up on it!!

I think you guys might've ruined visual novels for me forever. I'm not sure I'll be able to play another without comparing it to Our Life and I know if I do that I'll be disappointed every time because of how amazing it is. I bought the DLCs before playing the base game it's one of the best impulsive purchases I've ever made

Csn i just say i really appreciate how you handled MC deciding to use they/them at different stages. Mainly because alot of games don't pay much attention to the body the mc was assigned at birth if they player chooses nonbinary like it does with male/female. And it was just nice to be able to play an mc who just thought gender was kinda 'meh' for them but still felt good about the body they were born with (like myself). I guesd it boils down I'm really appreciative of the hard work it must've taken for you to make all those options possible & still have them matter.

I just wanted to thank you all for Our Life. My mental health hasn't been in a good place recently and it has become my favorite form of escapism/way to cheer up. It's idyllic setting and fantastic characters are such a good way to wind down, I love it. Also, I've been dreading 2021 due to classes starting and general stress, but the DLC and your next project have given me something to actually look forward to :). I've gotta say this is one of the most repayable games I've ever played, if not the most. Usually after i do a playthrough or two of a game i have to wait awhile before playing again otherwise it feels stale. But i haven't had that problem with our life because of the sheer ammount of player agency. Everyone who works on tbe game should feel incredibly proud of themselves because you've created something amazing.

Ignore this if you are not looking for further discussion of your ship opinions, lol, but I get excited talking about complicated dynamics.

Given how emotionally intelligent Kaito proved to be during the game, I can't imagine he would let a relationship happen between him and Shuichi and/or Maki. He has to know there is a lot of idealization going on from their end and knows how unhealthy that would be for all involved. Seems to be a big part of the reason he does not respond as stereotypically expected to Maki's love confession right before his execution, regardless of how he legitimately felt.

That being said, I am a sucker for theorizing how characters grow into being compatible with each other. I can see the growth they both go through in Ch 6 contributing to a more equal relationship. They both need independence to be a good partner for anybody imo.

HONESTLY yeah this is really well-worded! idealization is the perfect word to describe exactly why i dont like the ships, thank you HAHA. i feel like kaito is well aware of the effects he had on them, and i honestly didn't see kaimaki as like, a mutual thing when watching because he honestly treats everybody the same and its clear he does that on purpose. i think in a way it's him putting that wall between himself and the hero role he tries to play, and he knows maki fell in love with what he gave her rather than himself and just like you said, he doesn't really reciprocate her confession or anything and that whole conversation was just...really bittersweet

i hate to sound like the "im putting this ship down to support my ship" person bc thats not my intentions at all :sob: but looking at kaito and ouma's relationship entirely non-romantically, ouma was the only one who saw through his bullshit and was (understandably!!!) annoyed by the whole hero charade. he knew that kaito was jeopardizing himself and in turn jeopardizing everybody else and he recognized this on top of the fact that kaito was letting himself die to put on a show for the others before anybody else even caught wind of the fact that kaito was hiding something so it's just like. that is DRASTICALLY different from the rose-colored lens that maki and shuichi viewed kaito through (bc of kaitos lying, but yknow)

and agreed, i do think that a lot of the later chapters is where i love kaito and shuichi's bond and how they can bounce back from a rough patch AND maturely discuss it (especially bc it required kaito to admit his flaws). but i think that's why i prefer platonic saimota and kaimaki because i feel it's much healthier to dissect the flaws in their relationships at that stage, especially because of the nature of their relationships. i hope that made sense HAHA but. overall i do think that the relationships kaito has with those two are so fun and important to dissect and discuss but i just can't bring myself to ship saimota romantically at all

Okay, I'm excited about where I plan to go! And, now that I have a plan I'm going to start assigning names and genders because I am not good at 'they' when there are more than two characters. . .

When they woke, Villain immediately wished they hadn’t. They were in a lurching small space that they could only assume was the trunk of a car. They gritted their teeth and tried to figure out if it would be better to force themselves to go limp or try to tense and fight each bump. The sheer exhaustion of their battered body forced them to choose limpness, their head bouncing up and down with every jolt, their still bound arms and legs flopping in the confined space like fish out of water.

Villain stifled a groan, clenching their teeth as a particularly large pair of bumps knocked their head against the roof of the trunk. Then tensed as the car began progressing along a relatively smooth course. They tried to find a taillight, hoping to break it and get a view of wherever they were, but there was nothing. Now Villain thumped their own head, they must have been put in face first. Facing away from the opening. Assuming they were right about it being a car at all. They hadn’t exactly been shoved in a trunk before.

They tried to roll over, twisting towards the opening. But their side immediately screamed in pain. Whatever meager scabs had started to form over their side ripped. Fresh blood seeping out from under the . . . Villain squinted in the near darkness . . . bandages? Frowning, Villain stared at the white strips that wrapped their waist. They tried to think. They remembered Superhero cutting off their air. They shuddered at the memory, the blackness creeping across their vision.

That wouldn’t have kept them under for long. They must have been drugged after, something to keep them under. So, someone must have provided at least some level of care before they started transport. Villain sighed quietly, probably so I didn’t bleed all over their car.

The car stopped, and briefly, Villain wondered if they had heard the sigh, but there was no way over the sound of the engine. They closed their eyes and went limp again, unsure of the situation. The best they could think to do was to make their captors equally unsure of their consciousness.

A blazing warmth filled the darkness, and Villain realized they had been cold. The bright pink of sunlight through their eyelids was obscured as a figure stepped into it, or something blocked it.

“Are they still out?” the stranger asked. His voice was smooth, betraying no hint of worry.

“They didn’t start banging. That’s all I know.” That was Superhero, Villain had rarely tangled with her, but after their last encounter, they didn’t think they’d ever forget that voice.

There was a sigh, then fingers pressed against Villain’s neck. They tried to breathe slowly, mimic unconsciousness. They didn’t know if it worked. There were no words before several pairs of hands grabbed them and started to lift them out of the small space they had been curled in. For a second, their head started to loll, then a hand shifted to catch it.

Villain tried not to furrow their brow as they were set down on what felt like a bed.

“Now, this is going to be the hard part. Unless Villain decides not to make it hard on us.” The stranger’s voice again, it trailed off as if they were waiting on an answer. The seconds stretched in silence until Villain sighed and opened their eyes to see Superhero and several others in what looked like a mix of scrubs and security gear. The bed looked like a hospital gurney with rails that were likely stronger than they looked, cuffs attached.

The closest person smiled, “there you are. Are you going to make it hard on us? In the best of circumstances, you won’t have much chance to escape and injured as you are; this is hardly the best.”

It was the stranger; he looked as calm as he sounded. Villain eyed him, the mint green clothes, the surprisingly large arms, the small smile. They looked away, instead looking up into the vast blue expanse, “not sure I have much choice.”

“You don’t have a choice as to what happens next,” the stranger said, “but you do get to choose how it happens.”

Villain glanced back at the unexpected answer, not pushy but expectant. Then looked down at the cuffs along the bed rails, the power restraining ropes that prevented them from being confined to the bed instead. They waited in silence, watching Superhero shift in annoyance as the quiet stretched, then finally shrugged. “I’ll make it easy on myself, assuming you’re talking about rope to cuff. No promises after that.”

Surprisingly, the stranger laughed. “Thank you, Villain. For now, that’s all we ask,” they said as they unknotted the rope.

Villain and Superhero froze at the same instant. Apparently, Superhero had also not expected the man to just untie Villain without any additional precautions. He didn’t even cuff Villain immediately after the first knot. Instead, he removed the rope entirely, then raised a single eyebrow as Villain lay in the bed. Villain placed their wrist into the open cuff, unsure how else to react and painfully aware of both the surrounding security and their own injuries.

Superhero spluttered as the stranger continued to secure Villain to the gurney. “What?” they started to ask before trailing into silence.

The stranger rolled their eyes slightly, “It’s amazing, Superhero,” they said, “how cooperative people will be if you ask politely.” They paused for a moment as they were tightening Villain’s ankle cuff. “Well,” they continued, “I suppose we didn’t just ask. Villain is intelligent; they can see their position. Not sure why they would refuse.”

Villain didn’t respond; instead, they stared around what looked like a large courtyard. Nondescript buildings lined the exterior. They couldn’t see any sort of driveway. Frowning slightly, they looked to their other side to see the car they had been brought in. But there was nothing there.

“Holograms, Villain,” the stranger said, “I’m afraid you don’t have clearance to see where we are.”

“Seriously, Jamie?” Superhero broke in, “I don’t think you’re supposed to just tell Villain part of the security system.”

“And you aren’t supposed to use my name, yet here we are.” Jamie’s previously calm voice hardened, and Superhero flinched. “I won’t tell on you if you don’t tell on me,” Jamie said after a second of silence.

Villain glanced between them, but Superhero refused to look at them, and Jamie only smiled before motioning his assistants to start wheeling Villain towards one of the buildings.

“Now,” Jamie said, their voice once again placid, “let’s get you patched up, shall we?”

the robot problem: a critical look at tobecky, 5 years late

hello wordgirl fandom i am back :) and i have a lot of thoughts that i never got around to expressing before i moved on from the show. so be aware that everything i'm saying is based on my experiences during the 2012-2016 era of the fandom & state of tumblr in general, and i am not familiar with more recent fan content.

it's been over five years since the show ended, and @ifbrd​ reminded me (along with some great analysis) that while tobecky was super popular since before the show technically started (thanks to the play date shorts), it's pretty unhealthy in a lot of ways that tend to be excused or flat out ignored in fanworks. i'd like to reflect on that a bit (a lot); specifically, how both the show and the fandom approached this enemies-to-lovers ship, and how easily this ship can slip into uncomfortable territory if we're careless about how we interpret the ship and create fan content of it.

i will admit, i'm mostly writing this as a response to past me and my old creations - though i moved on from the show as a whole years ago, i do like taking the time to reflect on old interests once in a while, and reevaluating my thoughts on them. and this ship is probably the biggest one that still lurks in the corners of my mind once in a while, so let's go.

cherish is the word: a short positive note before a much longer negative one

i wanted to start this essay off with some positivity, because i am going to be very negative after this. tobecky was, in some ways, cute. it's obvious from the very beginning that these two characters are on pretty equal ground, even if one of them isn't aware of it. and that's part of the fun - the irony of how unaware tobey is that his nemesis/crush/person that pretty much always wins against him is someone that he completely dismisses as incompetent. i want to point this out because honestly, in general i don't like enemies-to-lovers because a lot of them use a power imbalance within the dynamic, and i hate power imbalances, especially when it comes to actual life-or-death scenarios (at least, as much as cartoons can do that). in most episodes, becky is never actually forced to go along with his wishes. she's not held in a 'date' against her will, nor is she ever really outwitted by him. i bring this up because there is one huge, uncomfortable exception, which i will get to later.

another big plus to the ship is the fact that they just... get along? even when fighting? of course we get brief moments where they just hang out and talk about paintings or whatever, but i'm talking about how much they get each other, even if they don't realize it. like the word banter, for example. been there since day one. becky loves words, and while most other people in her life don't really care (ranging from 'eh, that's cool i guess' to her brother calling it annoying), tobey gives her a chance to show off and thus treats her as a worthy adversary as herself, not because of her more generic superpowers - something that we've seen in canon that she feels self-conscious about (see: her motivation in patch game). one of the less noticed examples, to me, is "it's your party and i'll cry if I want to", because it's just - okay. they both are excluded from a social event, and while it's obvious that tobey deals with it by destroying the city, it's also pretty obvious that becky also deals with her frustration by fighting in that battle. like, yes, realistically it's just objectively bad that he's destroying buildings. but they're also providing each other with a way to work through their frustrations, first by fighting and then by talking things out, and finally by hanging out together instead of dwelling on being excluded from the party.

so it makes a lot of sense to me that many tobecky fans gravitated towards writing far-in-the-future fic, usually by implying that some growth had taken place before starting to write the ship. (there are, as far as i'm aware, 2... maybe 3 exceptions, that take the time to attempt a real redemption for him, at least when i left the fandom.) because if you take away his worst moments, either by reasoning out that he was 10 years old and a mess, or that he was a cartoon character in a cartoon world where everyone's actions are over-the-top, or by just flat-out pretending that certain episodes never happened, there's some pretty solid ground to start a ship on.

go gadget go: we all do not see it, we simply close our eyes (review of canon)

when the show began, i was the same age as the characters. a lot of other people were, too - at least in my cohort of the fandom. i think it's pretty safe to say that many of us have fond memories of the show's earlier seasons, and held on to that interest as we got older, for whatever reasons. so like, not to be all 'as an OG fan...', but i remember seeing the shorts air for the first time in 2006. i have a diary entry in july of 2009 about how i, a 12yo with no concept of the idea of 'shipping', was disappointed in the new tobey episode because i wanted more tobecky interactions. (that was robo-camping, btw, lol.) and so i remember how exciting their rivalry felt, watching them as someone literally their exact same age, and then watching that again as a nostalgic 17yo, and then uh... growing up, to put it frankly, and realizing just how unhealthy most of their interactions were.

okay what i meant to say was, this section is an overview of the relationship's canon portrayal throughout the years.

first, we have early tobecky: this includes the shorts and the first few seasons. this is their classic relationship: he likes her and takes robots on rampages to get her attention, she majorly disapproves and has fun taking him down. we've all seen the show, you know what i'm talking about. his backhanded ways of trying to find out her identity often feature prominently in the episodes, which - sigh, i've mentioned this whole issue before, but it's kind of a grey area in the whole uncomfortable-factor thing, because while trying to find out her identity is VERY invasive, it's something that like... everyone in the show tries to do, even her canon crush (scoops). on the one hand, it's really not a great look, but on the other hand, this is a cartoon meant to parody a genre in which this trope is extremely common. so i just wanna say that i have Issues and Thoughts on this aspect of their relationship, but there are other things i find more important to discuss here.

second, we have late tobecky: this is seasons 7-8. this is... a very strange and huge shift from the previous dynamic, though it's not necessarily obvious. what i mean by that is that for some reason, the show writers made it so that half of tobey’s rampages have nothing to do with his crush on wordgirl, even though that used to be the sole reason for his villainy. seriously. we have the birthday episode, where he's upset because he feels left out; wg vs tobey vs the dentist, where he's mad that he has a cavity; and trustworthy tobey, where his robot goes on a rampage... after becky accidentally makes it malfunction. the two outliers are ‘guess who’s coming to thanksgiving dinner’ and ‘patch game’, but they still differ from previous seasons because 1) his destruction is isolated to a forest far away from the city, and 2) his motive is still to impress wordgirl, but his methods are relatively tame. also he completely gives up on the secret identity thing??? i may have missed some things but i think he straight up tells her 'yeah there's no way you're wordgirl, lol' and the subject is just dropped for the rest of the show.

i also want to include 'the robot problem' here, because it's one of two season 6 tobey episodes, and follows the 'doesn't destroy buildings to get her attention' pattern: in fact, he teams up with her to try and stop someone else from going on a rampage (even if his reasons are selfish, lol).

and finally. the other season 6 episode. we have go gadget go, the bane of my time spent in the fandom. because GGG is the single episode where tobey truly manages to take away her autonomy, and proceeds to abuse that power for an extended period of time, for his own amusement. it's bad. it's Very Bad. put in the context that it's a white boy doing this to an (ambiguously) brown girl, it's REALLY REALLY BAD. and the more i look back on it, tbh, the more weirded out i am that the show not only made it seem like she wasn't affected at all within the episode, it just... forgot about it (which is not unusual for shows and especially children’s shows, but WG does make some efforts to either retain continuity or create canon reasons for why things are forgotten about). it's the kind of thing that you can't excuse and honestly you can't redeem (like at this point, you gotta ask yourself why you're spending so much effort trying to redeem this guy when becky has several other possible ships that are nowhere near this unhealthy - violet, scoops, honestly even victoria if you want another hero/villain ship, my absolute fave rarepair rose, etc).

so if you want to still ship it you have to just pretend that it never happened. (i remember trying for weeks to write something exploring the aftermath of this episode, to try and make myself feel better about it, but the more i wrote the more i realized just how traumatic this event should've been, so i eventually just dropped it.) and i brought up my own timeline of experiences earlier to point out that this episode aired eight whole years after the show started. which means that when i saw it, even though i was a huge stickler for canon at the time, i'd built up my own idea of the show and characters strongly enough to go 'yeah, no, this episode sucks and i am going to pretend that it doesn't exist'. and i think a lot of other people did too, because i really saw like... no one mention it, ever, except for some rogue fanfics over on ff dot net that already liked dynamics like that.

because here's the thing, and i don't know if people nowadays are aware of it? but i'm 80% sure (cannot find a source, so the other 20% is that it was just a rumor) that the show was originally supposed to end after season 6. and even if it's a rumor, it makes a ton of sense, because we get 1) an 'ending' to tobecky, which is a bad one, 2) a permanent wordgirl identity reveal that significantly changes one of the major dynamics in the show, 3) an episode where TJ gets to work with wordgirl and get a nice potential ending for their sibling dynamic, 4) an episode where we see Two-Brains explore life without his henchmen... the list goes on, and idk how many of these are just major stretches. but the point is. if the show had ended there, that would've been a pretty solid ending for many things, including their relationship: aka, it would prove that it was only ever heading somewhere bad, and when tobey finally has his moment of triumph, he is truly evil about it. and this provides us fans who HATE go gadget go with an easy reason to dismiss it - we can say that it was an attempt to conclude things in a way that wouldn't have happened if the writers had known they'd get more time. but despite that... it is still a canon episode.

it is odd to me how dramatically the dynamic shifts after that, though, because we seriously go from 'worst case ever, tobecky is toxic, your ship is dead' to 'no actually they get along and hang out and get ice cream together and tobey isn't even pressuring her into it, she's happy to go along with it :)' like, immediately. i never knew much about the show writers, so i don't know if the writers changed in between these seasons, but i would absolutely not be surprised if they did.

the earlier episodes are definitely problematic as well (though they pale in comparison to GGG) but i think everyone who ships it is aware considering that tobey is, yknow, a villain. from memory, he destroys buildings to get her attention, lies to her about the level of danger that people are in to trick her into spending more time with him, blackmails her into reading his poetry, and he creates a robot based on her that’s supposed to be devoted to him (but of course, all of these things backfire). not great stuff of course, but like... he’s a villain, that’s the point of his character. and considering that he’s a child these are things that can be redeemed, if done thoughtfully.

anyway, to sum up this section, the show starts off with a pretty standard 'enemies with an unrequited crush' setup, takes a really dark turn for a single episode, and then for the rest of the show takes their dynamic in a direction that makes it much, much easier to ship. as long as you ignore a lot of previous content.

wordbot: where's becky's autonomy in all of this? (misogyny)

we've finally gotten to the fandom. i recognize that a lot of this is going to come across as hypocritical considering how active i used to be re: this ship, but like... i'm a very different person now. anyway. disclaimer i guess - i don't write this to accuse all tobecky shippers of being like this - i know a lot of us aren't/weren't! but boy do i have things to point out, so without further ado:

it is very hard to ship this without allowing some bit of misogyny to slip into it. very, very hard. the entire premise of the ship involves a girl falling in love with a boy that repeatedly pressures her to date him via threats to the safety of herself and people she cares about, which... it's 2020, i shouldn't have to explain why that's terrible & a terrible example to set for children (which is why i am glad they never made it canon, tbh). best-case fan content has tobey stop pressuring her and start working to redeem himself out of an actual change of heart, which leads to becky seeing him in a new light. worst-case fan content treats his incessant pressuring and sometimes outright threats as something romantic - and even worse, romantic to the point where he deserves her attention and love as a reward for not giving up or whatever. i did see this pretty frequently for a while, especially in the earlier 2010s (didn't read much, Not My Thing At All), but i don't feel like going into detail here because of how obviously problematic it is. one medium (but still bad) case is where the fan content makes him start his redemption, but treats her liking him back as a reward for not knocking buildings over anymore. another not great case is where she tries to fix him with her love, which is a very common and very dangerous romantic trope. both are just... so incredibly unfair to her.

in content where she tries to 'fix him'... yeah i feel like it's really obvious how misogynistic that is. girls and women should not feel responsible for the evil actions of men, plain and simple. idk what else to say here i just really hate that trope and hated it back then and it just sucks! so can we not do that anymore, thanks.

in content that treats her like a reward for good behavior, there really isn't much of an explanation for what she sees in him. if she just goes 'oh wow, you're good now, i am going to fall in love with you for it' the whole thing falls flat because it makes NO sense whatsoever. we get to hear so much about tobey and his feelings and why he likes her and how he feels about it, but where is that energy for becky? why does she choose to trust him, to spend time around him, what does she enjoy about his presence? where is her getting over scoops in the process of falling for tobey? where is her telling her friends about this, confiding in them, asking them for advice? where is her choice in the matter?

win a day with wordgirl: do you guys even like becky or do you just like the idea of her (misogyny... 2!)

it was pretty standard for all fandoms the early-mid 2010s, but that's still not a good excuse for why so many tobecky fanfictions centered specifically around tobey's feelings while refusing to give becky the same level of empathy and nuance. it is true that to ship them comfortably you have to redeem him to some degree, which means spending time figuring him out and trying to find ways to pull him to the light without feeling super OOC. but ships take two people??? and there was so much potential for fanfics to explore becky's complex feelings on the matter - because she is! complex! she's heroic and kind but she's petty and has a competitive streak, she easily befriends villains but also doesn't trust them and doesn't believe they can ever really change, she's the savior of an entire planet but has feelings of inadequacy as her civilian identity and struggles with feeling like she can be successful without superpowers, she's great at the straightforward meanings and uses of words and loves reading but struggles to write passages that aren't dry as hell, it can be easily headcannoned that she's neurodivergent (special interests, issues with fitting in with her peers, taking things very literally, etc)... seriously there is SO MUCH to explore about her character, and a lot of it comes into play when you add tobey into the mix (literally ALL of the things i mentioned are explored at some point using tobey as a parallel or foil), but i rarely saw fanfiction that explored her thoughts on things further than 'he's evil but... maybe good?' or 'he's evil but... i kind of like him anyway?'.

if you want her to fall for him while being a villain, explore it!! why does she go against her morals? does she lie to herself about it to feel better? does she feel like she has to 'fix him' as part of her superhero duties to the city, and if so, how does that affect her as she tries and fails to help him? does she fall for him when she believes that he's turning good, only to feel betrayed when he starts acting worse because he feels like he can get away with it? it's such a shame that fanworks spend so little time even considering these questions, and it is absolutely a product of how deeply misogyny is/was baked into how we approach media (especially back then).

tobey goes good: but wait, i thought this show was progressive (a conclusion, i guess)

ifbrd wrote a great meta recently about how the show is a bit misogynist, despite being progressive in several ways. honestly i don't have much to add, but i'd really recommend reading through this; it makes a lot of great observations about the ways that male and female characters are presented differently through the show

i have little to add, so i'd just like to conclude with a reflection on the ship from my current viewpoint. i do think part of the reason so many of us latched onto the ship, despite how obviously problematic it was, is that the show treats a lot of things that would be serious in real life as normal or even comedic - which is fine lol, i'm not going to pretend that it's not a show for little kids, so they have to keep the tone light.

but if we, as teens/adults, decide to engage with this content in a more realistic manner, we have to be prepared to confront how messed up so many of the things going on really are. and if you still want to ship it, there's nothing inherently wrong with that! there's a lot of interesting things to explore in this ship, no matter what stage of enemies-to-friends-to-lovers you write them at, and it can be really helpful to have a space where you can explore a dynamic such as this in fiction. (speaking from experience here tbh, writing some fic for them helped me deal with complicated feelings about some ex-longtime friends.)

so to write this ship at all means that there are canon issues that you need to deal with if you want to have them end up in a healthy relationship in any manner that makes sense (unless you create an AU where none of that is applicable, which, power to you then). and i’m not saying ‘write them with a healthy endgame or you’re Bad’, not at all lol. but at least please, please take a step back once in a while to examine the dynamic that you’re writing, and please be careful about whether you mean to be romanticizing whatever behaviors you end up portraying as good.

You might know Kjalla if...

Merciless Mercenary. Kjalla is a notoriously cutthroat sellsword, unscrupulous - more than willing and able to do any job big or small, just as long as kids aren’t involved. (That’s the one line she doesn’t cross.) From political leaders to petty thieves, she’s taken them all. Her race may paint her as a novelty - it’s not often you see a viera mercenary traipsing around the world, after all - but she’s no laughing matter. If you hire mercenaries, work with them, or are one yourself, there’s a good chance you’ve heard of her, under one of her assorted names - some flattering, some very much not.

Underworld Surgeon. Kjalla has no magical healing talent but she’s a darn good field surgeon, and has a great knowledge of alchemical remedies, salves and drugs. A ‘side-job’ of hers is to sell her services as a mundane healer to shady characters who, for fear of the law, of the attention, or otherwise - avoid visiting a reputable establishment for healing after an incident. Criminals on the run, overdose cases, just someone who wants to stay off the grid - if you’re in need of a quick patching-up and you’d rather keep it discreet, her junk-shop is always open.

Life of the Party. Kjalla is a staple in a few of her favorite seedy dives in cities across the world - and would certainly be recognizable to regulars, given scar-covered, foul-mouthed viera with backwater accents aren’t exactly easy to miss. If you frequent these kinds of establishments, you’ve no doubt heard of, seen, and maybe even gotten into a drunken brawl with her.

Purveyor of Dangerous and Exploding Things. Kjalla loves weapons - all of them, but especially guns, bombs, tasers, flamethrowers, dynamite, and weapons far more bizarre and exotic. If you’re a weapon collector, an arms dealer, or if you’re looking to outfit yourself with something significantly more dangerous, you’ve no doubt run in to back-alley gunrunners and smugglers who’ve mentioned her as a supplier. Conversely, if you’re searching for training in gunsmithing or engineering from a master, she might consider it... you’ll probably wind up dead, though, so maaaybe not a good idea... unless that’s your kink. 

Garlean Killer: There’re few jobs Kjalla loves more than the ones where she gets to pop Garlean heads like grapes. Though one could scarcely call the viera a principled woman whose violence is politically sophisticated, she takes a perverse delight in torturing and killing agents of the empire, even if she’s not getting paid to do it. Naturally her reputation for murdering prominent officers, personnel, facilities, and stealing lots of Garlean technology has made her a notorious outlaw in the empire, and if you’re involved in any of those fields, you’d recognize her scarred visage anywhere. Just be careful - she really does love planting bullets right in those third eyes.
