Uhhh, hey haz, you prob don’t remember or know me, but I used to have my own spade queen oc with my own ask blog a while back. (I think you actually acknowledged em at some point) (Big dress with the spade mouth if that rings any bells)

I was too shy to interact with ppl all those years ago and I’ve since moved on from posting on tumblr (I don’t think I even have access to my accs), but I felt nostelgia and remembered your blog and came to it to check it out and wanted to say that I always saw you as an inspiration for art and stuff. I love your art and how you make stories with your characters for people to enjoy.

I also totally get how you would’ve felt encountering the queen in chapter 2 btw. As someone with my own headcanons and oc it did give me chills when I saw the official thing. I’d like to say that even though it feels like the character you built up is not as popular now that there’s a confirmed canon, people still love the character you made and your interpretations of em!

I think you could totally make your own thing with your own audience! I hesitate to use the term “AU”, but I as well as others would love to continue following along any stories you make.

(Actually, I sorta assume you already have something like this this in mind which if thats the case cool! or if not thats cool too!)

Regardless, I’m sending this message just to say I think you’re hecking epic, and that the stuff you make is good and has value to ppl.

Maybe you’ll keep queenie’s story ongoing or move onto other things, but I’ll be loving what you make regardless!

I do in fact have plans for an AU, since I can’t bring myself to ignore canon for the sake of something else I’ve already done that contradicts it, so hopefully it’s appealing to the fans of Chapter 2 as well as my veteran followers from Chapter 1 (whoever’s still here, anyways).

It’s not easy leaving behind what I started, but so far I’m enjoying the new things that I have yet to put out, and hopefully, others will too.

The Queen has died unexpectedly so I need a change of quote for Monday. I was planning to use the poem ‘Church Going’ by Philip Larkin for the Ride and Stride weekend, plus to welcome the new evangelicals clergy to our new ‘resource church’.

Ride and Stride have put an announcement on their website re mourning saying that ‘quiet events’ are still allowed to go ahead so the churches will be open.

I have decided to use the last line of the new King Charles’ first address.

‘May “flights of Angels sing thee to thy rest”.’ (King Charles III, 2022).

It has taken me ages to work out the referencing because the original quote is from ‘Hamlet’ but I want to include the ‘May’. The quote also appears in various other contexts.

‘Song for Athene’

‘Alleluia. May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.’ (Thekla in ‘Song for Athene’, 2022).

This wasn’t written for Princess Diana but it became famous for being performed at her funeral. The lyrics were written by orthodox nun Mother Theckla at John Taverner’s request, for the funeral of family friend Athene Hariades. It is often just know as ‘May Flights of Angels Sing Thee to Thy Rest’. I can’t imagine that King Charles was quoting an anthem sung at his ex wife’s funeral. He had to be quoting Shakespeare.

I love this not least because the ‘Q’ line is spoken by Queeny ie Elizabeth I. However the quote is obviously used in terms of a casual ‘Goodnight’ so is not quite appropriate.

this might come out like a vent thing but i have no queer friends to talk to and am too scared to make friends

i (f17) have been thinking that i might be bi for over 2 yrs now and am very very very paranoid about people finding out about it and recently read comp het and a few things related to it and i think i might be a lesbian but this just hit me like a fucking truck and just i CANNOT be a lesbian i can't even say it out loud tho i couldn't do it with bisexuality too but i don't want to be gay i want to be straight and all of this is just crushing me so bad i have my exams amd school work pending, I'm failing my classes, i used to self harm like a year ago and stopped after 3 4 months i think but i am back at it and it's worse this time.....i have no one to talk to coz i am also very shy and even my best friend is being distant or is just saying ok whenever i try to talk to her about this which i understandable as she is straight and doesn't get what I'm feeling like and it's a lot and i know this will sound super dumb but i tried to "become" straight like i unfollowed every queer acc and scraped every rainbow colored thing in my room i started trying to limit myself in any way and make sure i don't act "gay"(dress wise behaviour wise etc) and i cannot do it i just can't happen to change it and it's only been 4-5 days.......i don't want to be gay, if i were straight i would have never self harmed or did as badly i am doing in school rn and like it's my final yr and the marks matter and just i don't know; i don't even know what i expect you to reply to this honestly

You cannot “become” straight. That’s literally why conversion therapy doesn’t work. It’s impossible. Your sexual oriantation isn’t something you have any control over. It’s just what it is. It might change naturally but you cannot ~make it~ change. Because sexual orientation isn’t sticking a bunch of rainbows to your bedroom wall (or scraping them off). It’s whom you are attracted to - that’s not something anyone can control.

And that’s a fact you have to learn to accept because otherwise you won’t ever be able to move past this. You are what you are. Whether that’s bi or gay or some other shade of queer remains to be seen, I guess. But you cannot just force yourself to be straight and trying so will only make your mental health worse because you will keep failing at it. Because it is impossible.

You gotta learn to accept that you are queer. And in order to do so I recommend the exact opposite of what you’ve been doing. Follow more queer accounts. Slab all those rainbows back on! Read up on queer history. Try to talk to people about it - if you can’t do that offline then do it online. Find queer friends on tumblr or join a queer discord server. Show to yourself that you are not alone.

And as for your mental health and self-harm: if you have access to it then pls think about getting professional help from a queer-friendly therapist or some kind of queer counselling. Ask google if there is a queer resource center in your country or your specific area that you can contact to ask for help and guidance. They might be able to refer you to people and resources that can help. Other than that, try to find less dangerous coping mechanisms by looking for alternatives to self-harm.

Just like you cannot will yourself to magically be straight you cannot just make your mental health better over night. It’s gonna take time and energy. It isn’t a cake-walk for some people. And that’s still okay because it’s worth it in the end. Also, keep in mind that you are going through all of this in the middle of a global pandemic - which for me as a 31yo is already mindblowingly tough on my mental health. I can only imagine what it’s like for teenagers to go through this right now on top of the regular teenage struggles AND on top of figuring out one’s queerness. You might think it doesn’t have anything to do with your struggle at school and your queerness but everything’s connected, kiddo. For people who are prone to isolate themselves (which you basically said you are, being shy and all) this pandemic situation can really strengthen that character trait for the worse. So please try to reach out to people. I’m proud you’re already doing so by messaging us. But try to keep doing that. Talk to people as much as you can and don’t shy away from asking for help.

You might currently not like being queer. But you are. And you gotta make your peace with that. So take a deep breathe, accept that your queerness is something you cannot change and then take your baby steps towards being okay with it. And then going from “okay” to actually loving it. it might take a while but it’s worth it. You are worth it!

BTS FREE HUGS PROJECT!!!

Hello all! I hope you're doing well ♥

I'm Ki Cam (@Kipuccino) aka PK21 on twt and Pandakookie21 on Youtube, and I have a BIG request I hope you will hear me out pretty please. ^_^

I live in Atlanta, GA and every year here at the end of September aka this year's BANGTEMBER, there is a HUUUGE convention in my city called, AWA which stands for ANIME WEEKEND(in)ATLANTA.

As I'm sure most of you know, Anime is mainly considered a Japanese thing, but it is also a great place to find lovers of KPOP, KDrama etc.

This event brings in over 10,000 people every year at LEAST and I think it would be a great opportunity to get people to vote and stream for BTS especially with MAMA coming up. So I have a plan to make what is called a BRIBECART Or "Noemul"cart (because the joke is noemul(bribe) sounds kind of like NAE (pi ddam nun) MUL, and of course it's to get help streaming, maintaining social media popularity, and hopefully VOTING for BTS, which of course most of the awards, if they win, will be for WINGS and WINGS YNWA era.

The basic method is, Across 4 days of the event, I will be offering FREE HUGS (maybe in a onesie lol) and when people come over I will tell them they have a chance at a free snack.

I will give away small snacks or candies for free that has BTS info on it with the hug.

If they agree and stream any one BTS song or music video on their mobile device right then in front of me, they can have an additional snack/candy/drink. (Also if they use their device to search BTS, use a hashtag, or rt a specific tweet I give, any combination of these things they can have a second treat as well.)

At Last: Driver-Assist Terms Will Be Common Across All Cars

Here’s a major step forward in helping car buyers understand the meaning of car technology buzzwords, especially the terms for advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). This is a list of 19 terms primarily for single safety features that have described in as many as 40 different ways by various automakers. An industry-affiliated consortium has agreed on terms for 19 ADAS terms such as adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and automatic emergency braking.

Most terms are for single pieces of technology. Nothing stops an automaker from employing a unique, company-specific umbrella term for a collection of multiple technologies, such as Ford Co-Pilot 360 or Nissan Safety Shield, says Jake Fisher, senior director of auto testing at Consumer Reports, one of the groups that got the effort underway. The others are AAA, JD Power & Associates, and the National Safety Council.

Same Feature, Dozens of Different Names

Say you want a car that has a basic safety package of driver assists. How can you compare features when they have different names, and a dealership sales rep might not know, or knows and doesn’t tell you, that dynamic cruise control (more below) is just as good as adaptive cruise control? Now there’s a list of common features. It’s voluntary on the part of automakers. But third parties, including data aggregation companies that provide features information, will start using similar terms.

Here are the common terms that these groups will use going forward:

Nineteen ADAS terms the auto industry should use to describe core safety technology and avoid confusion. Automakers are still free to use their own umbrella names to describe a combination of several systems.

How Bad Is the Confusion?

A year ago an AAA automotive engineering team looked at 34 car brands sold in this US. This is how many different terms were used to describe common driver-assist features.

“We believe a united message [on names] could propel the industry forward,” says Kristen Kolodge, executive director for driver interaction and HMI at JD Power. Power’s involvement is doubly important: It does multiple car surveys that shape buyer attitudes, and a 2019 merger with Autodata Systems and its Chrome-branded solutions provides data on individual cars to automakers and major websites that report and cars and provide buying information. Now there’s a common language to describe what’s on each of the 17 million light vehicles sold in the US each year.

Our Take: Good Start. More Needed.

At Extreme Tech, we’ve described ADAS features using terminology that maps closely to the conclusions of the ADAS-naming consortium; often in reviews, we also cite the automaker’s own term. We’ve always used adaptive cruise control, the same as the consortium recommended. We’ve used blind-spot detection and the consortium’s blind-spot warning is close enough.

There are a couple of issues. The consortium uses two terms, lane-keeping assistance and lane-departure warning, to describe three different situations, from least to most helpful driver assistance:

Lane departure warning. When your crosses over a lane marking (or just before), you’re warned. This term is clear and its functionality maps to what the consortium calls it.

Lane keep (or keeping) assist. We’d say it’s like Pong for cars. When your car reaches the boundary marker for your lane, the steering pushes you back into the lane. Most of the time. Occasionally, the car keeps edging out-of-lane on a sharply curved road.

Lane centering assist. Real simple: The car always centers itself in the lane. (Except on really curvy roads where you shouldn’t be using LCA.) As long as you keep your hands lightly on the wheel — or in some cases, an eye tracker sees that you’re looking at the road — the car stays centered. Add adaptive cruise control and you’ve got SAE Level 2 self-driving, or what the consortium calls active driving assistance.

Similarly, adaptive cruise control covers several differences in functionality. Stop-and-go or full-range ACC takes the car all the way down to 0 mph and then back up to speed. At a light, you may have to press the gas pedal or hit a resume button. That’s the best ACC. Some older cars have ACC that goes down to 20 mph and then cuts out because the radar can’t focus on cars that may be close ahead in dense traffic, and that makes partial ACC unhelpful in stop-and-go traffic. And of the cars that stop and go, including some FCA products, they disengage ACC if the car is stopped for more than three seconds.

Forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking have nuances, too: on the highway versus in-town FCW (and also emergency braking), and detection of cars versus pedestrians, versus detection of pedestrians at night.

Dynamic Cruise Control Isn’t Active Cruise Control

For me, the confusion hit home last year when a neighbor dropped by in a new BMW X5 with a $68,000 list price (and that’s modestly optioned, with only $7,000 worth of extras). Her adaptive cruise control almost ran her into the car in front while on the interstate, she said. I went through the owner’s manual, checked the Monroney (the window sticker listing standard and optional features), and it eventually dawned on me: While some automakers use dynamic cruise control as a synonym for adaptive cruise control, as does Wikipedia, on her Bimmer “dynamic” means conventional cruise control. So no auto-pacing behind the car in front, but the car does slow down going around curves, then speeds up again. So it’s dynamic that way.

What my friend wanted but didn’t get – and this becomes linguistically confusing – is that while our president uses the best words, Germans string together the longest words. If you want ACC on many BMWs, you don’t want BMW Dynamic Cruise Control, nor do you merely want Active Driving Assistant (six ADAS features standard on the X5 but not including ACC). Instead, you want the Driving Assistance Professional Package, which incorporates Active Driving Assistant Pro and Extended Traffic Jam Assistant for Limited Access Highways. DAPP incorporating ADA and ETJA/LAH is a $1,700 bundle of very useful technologies that lets the car change lanes automatically, avoid side collisions, and help you maneuver in low-speed traffic.

But that’s how you get adaptive cruise control in this BMW. And never mind that ACC comes standard – no extra charge – on a $20,555 Toyota Corolla L. Where the feature is called – wait for it – dynamic radar cruise control, except in this case DRCC means ACC, all part of what the company calls Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 (TSS 2.0).

And this is where the consortium-for-simplicity comes in. It wants every automaker to call ACC adaptive cruise control. It doesn’t want to tell BMW it has to make ACC standard (even though BMW really should) and it doesn’t want to stop BMW from saying DAPP, ADA or ETJA/LAH, nor to stop Toyota from using TSS. But it is suggesting Toyota should move on from dynamic radar to active cruise control.

Consumer Reports, the most influential voice when it comes to promoting safety or evaluating reliability, has more tricks up its sleeve. For 2020 and its annual auto issue, it is raising the bar on what a car must do to be eligible for CR‘s Top Pick designation (the best car in each of 10 segments): It must be CR-recommended, and come standard with forward collision warning (FCW), with automatic emergency braking (AEB), and for 2020 it must come with pedestrian detection be standard and tied to AEB. CR’s Fisher also says the features have to be standard across the board for a model. No fair leaving it off the entry trim line that has an attractive price and only amounts to 5 percent of the model’s sales.

CR told automakers in advance about the change in Top Pick criteria for 2020. The upshot, Fisher says: The number of models that now have pedestrian detection, standard, on all trim lines, shot up significantly. Critics have argued the accuracy of pedestrian detection technology is hit or miss – so to speak – and doesn’t always work, especially in dim light. Against that, Fisher says, most advances in car safety protect the occupants, not pedestrians, so CR wants to prod the automakers.

Higher Ground Labs is betting tech can help sway the 2020 elections for Democrats

When Shomik Dutta and Betsy Hoover first met in 2007, he was coordinating fundraising and get-out-the-vote efforts for Barack Obama’s first presidential campaign and she was a deputy field director for the campaign.

Over the next two election cycles the two would become part of an organizing and fundraising team that transformed the business of politics through its use of technology — supposedly laying the groundwork for years of Democratic dominance in organizing, fundraising, polling and grassroots advocacy.

Then came Donald J. Trump and the 2016 election.

For both Dutta and Hoover, the 2016 outcome was a wake-up call against complacency. What had worked for the Democratic party in 2008 and 2012 wasn’t going to be effective in future election cycles, so they created the investment firm Higher Ground Labs to provide financing and a launching pad for new companies serving Democratic campaigns and progressive organizations.

“As the political world shifts from analog to digital, we need a lot more tools to capture that spend,” says Dutta. “Democrats are spending on average 70 cents of every dollar raised on television ads. We are addicted to old ways of campaigning. If we want to activate and engage an enduring majority of voters we have to go where they are (and that’s increasingly online) and we have to adapt to be able to have these conversations wherever they are.”

Social media and the rise of “direct to consumer” politics

While the Obama campaign effectively used the internet as a mobilization tool in its two campaigns, the lessons of social media and mobile technologies that offer a “direct-to-consumer” politics circumventing traditional norms have, in the ensuing years, been harnessed most effectively by conservative organizations, according to some scholars and activists.

“The internet is a tool and in that sense it’s neutral, but just like other communication tools from the past, people with more power, with more resources, with more organization, have been able to take advantage of it,” Jen Schradie, an assistant professor at the Observatoire sociologique du changement at Sciences Po in Paris, told Vox in an interview earlier this month.

Schradie is a scholar whose recent book, “The Revolution That Wasn’t,” contends that the internet’s early application as a progressive organizing tool has been overtaken by more conservative elements. “The idea of neutrality seems more true of the internet because the costs of distributing information are dramatically lower than with something like television or radio or other communication tools,” she said. “However, to make full use of the internet, you still need substantial resources and time and motivation. The people who can afford to do this, who can fund the right digital strategy, create a major imbalance in their favor.”

Schradie contends that a web of privately funded think tanks, media organizations, talk radio and — increasingly — mobile applications have woven a conservative stitch into the fabric of social media. The medium’s own tendency to promote polarizing and fringe viewpoints also served to amplify the views of pundits who were previously believed to be political outliers.

Essentially, these sites have enabled commentators and personalities to create a patchwork of “grassroots” organizations and media operations dedicated to reaching an audience receptive to their particular political message that’s funded by billionaire donors and apolitical corporate ad dollars.

Then there’s the technology companies, like Cambridge Analytica, which improperly used access to Facebook data for targeting purposes — also financed by these same billionaires.

“The last six years have witnessed millions and millions of dollars of private Koch money and Mercer money that have gone to pretty sophisticated data and media efforts to advance the Republican agenda,” says Dutta. “I want to even the scale.”

Dutta is referring to Charles and David Koch and Robert Mercer, the scions and founder (respectively) of two family dynasties worth billions. The Koch brothers support a web of political advocacy groups, while Mercer and his daughter were large backers of Breitbart News and Cambridge Analytica, two organizations that arguably provided much of the policy underpinnings and online political machinery for the Trump presidential campaign.

But there’s also the simple fact that Donald Trump’s digital strategy director, Brad Parscale, was able to effectively and inexpensively leverage the social media tools and data troves amassed by the Republican National Committee that were already available to the candidate who won the Republican primary. In fact, in the wake of Romney’s loss, Republicans spent years building up profiles of 200 million Americans for targeted messaging in the 2016 election.

“Who controls Facebook controls the 2016 election,” Parscale said during a speaking engagement at the Romanian Academy of Sciences, according to a report in Forbes.

Parscale, now the campaign manager for the president’s 2020 reelection campaign recalled, “These guys from Facebook walked into my office and said: ‘we have a beta … it’s a new onboarding tool … you can onboard audiences straight into Facebook and we will match them to their Facebook accounts,’ ” according to Forbes .

During the 2016 campaign, Hillary Clinton’s team made 66,000 visual ads, according to Parscale, while the Trump campaign made 5.9 million ads by leveraging social media networks and the language of memes. And in the run-up to the 2020 election, Parscale intends to go back to the same well. The Trump campaign has already spent more than $5 million on Facebook ads in the current election cycle, according to The New York Times — outspending every single Democratic candidate in the field and roughly all of the Democrats combined.

Reaching higher ground

Dutta and Hoover are working to offset this movement with investments of their own. Back in 2017, the two launched Higher Ground Labs, an early-stage company accelerator and investment firm dedicated to financing technology companies that could support progressive causes.

The firm has $15 million committed from investors, including Reid Hoffman, the co-founder of LinkedIn and a partner at Greylock; Ron Conway, the founder of SV Angel and an early backer of Google, Facebook and Twitter; Chris Sacca, an early investor in Uber; and Elizabeth Cutler, the founder of SoulCycle. Already, Higher Ground has invested in more than 30 companies focused on services like advocacy outreach, polling and campaign organizing — among others.

“It is vitally important that Democrats learn to do their campaigns online,” says Dutta. “The way you recruit volunteers; the way you poll sentiment; the way you target and mobilize voters has to be done with online tools and has to improve in the progressive movement and that’s the job of Higher Ground Labs to fix.”

For-profit companies have a critical role to play in election organizing and mobilization, Dutta says. Thanks to government regulation, only private companies are allowed to trade data across organizations and causes (provided they do it at fair market value). That means advocacy groups, unions and others can tap the information these companies collect — for a fee.

The Democratic Party already has one highly valued private company that it uses for its technology services. Formed from the merger of NGP Software and Voter Activation Network, two companies that got their start in the late 1990s and early 2000s, NGP VAN is the largest software and technology services provider for Democratic campaigns. It’s also a highly valued company, which received roughly $100 million in financing last year from the private equity firm Insight Venture Partners, according to people familiar with the investment. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“Our vision has been to build a platform that would break down the painful data silos that exist in the campaigns and nonprofit space, and to offer truly best-in-class digital, fundraising and organizing features that could serve both the largest and the smallest nonprofits and campaigns, all with one unified CRM,” wrote Stu Trevelyan, the chief executive of NGP VAN + EveryAction, in an August blogpost announcing the investment. “We’re so excited that others, like our new partners at Insight, share that vision, and we can’t wait to continue innovating and growing together in the coming years.”

Can startups lead the way?

Even as private equity dollars boost the firepower of organizations like NGP VAN, venture capitalists are financing several companies from the Higher Ground Labs portfolio.

Civis Analytics, a startup founded by the former chief analytics officer of Barack Obama’s 2012 reelection campaign, raised $22 million from outside investors, and counts Higher Ground Labs among its backers. Qriously, another Higher Ground Labs portfolio company, was acquired by Brandwatch, as was GroundBase, a messaging platform acquired by the nonprofit progressive advocacy organization ACRONYM.

Other companies in the portfolio are also attracting serious attention from investors. Standouts like Civis Analytics and Hustle, which raised $30 million last May, show that investors are buying into the proposition that these companies can build lasting businesses serving Democratic and progressive political campaigns and corporate businesses that would also like to rally employees or personalize a marketing pitch to customers.

These are companies like Change Research, an earlier-stage company that just launched from Higher Ground Labs accelerator last year. That company, founded by Mike Greenfield, a serial Silicon Valley entrepreneur who was the first data scientist working on the problem of fraud detection at PayPal, and Pat Reilly, a communications professional who worked with state and local Democratic politicians, is slashing the cost of political polling.

“I wanted to do something for American democracy to try and improve the state of things,” Greenfield said in an interview last year.

For Greenfield, that meant increasing access to polling information. He cited the test case of a Kansas special election in a district that Donald Trump had won by 27 points. Using his own proprietary polling data, Greenfield predicted that the Democratic challenger, James Thompson, would pose a significant threat to his Republican opponent, Mike Estes.

Estes went on to a 7% victory at the ballot, but Thompson’s campaign did not have access to polling data that could have helped inform his messaging and — potentially — sway the election, said Greenfield.

“Public opinion is used to ween out who can be most successful based on how much money they’re able to raise for a poll,” says Reilly. It’s another way that electoral politics is skewed in favor of the people with disposable income to spend what is a not-insignificant amount of money on campaigns.

Polls alone can cost between $20,000 to $30,000 — and Change Research has been able to cut that by 80% to 90%, according to the company’s founders.

“It’s safe to say that most of the world was stunned by the outcome [of the presidential election] because most polls predicted the opposite,” says Greenfield. “Being a good American and as a parent of a 10-year-old and a 12-year-old, providing forward-thinking candidates and causes with the kind of insight they needed to win up and down the ballot could not only be a good business, but really help us save our democracy.”

Change Research isn’t just polling for politicians. Last year, the company conducted roughly 500 polls for political candidates and advocacy groups.

“The way that I’ve described Change Research to investors is that we want to simultaneously move the world in a better direction and having a positive impact while building a substantial business,” says Greenfield. “We’re only going to work with candidates and causes that we’re aligned with.”

Being exclusively focused on progressive causes isn’t the liability that many in the broader business community would think, says Dutta. Many Democratic organizations won’t work with companies that sell services to both sides of the aisle.

For Higher Ground Labs, a stipulation for receiving their money is a commitment not to work with any Republican candidate. Corporations are okay, but conservative causes and organizations are forbidden.

“We’re in a moment of existential crisis in America and this Republican party is deeply toxic to the health and future of our country,” says Dutta. “The only path out of this mess is to vote Republicans out of office and to do that we need to make it easier for good candidates to run for office and to engage a broader electorate into voting regularly.”
