Happy International Day of People with Disability to my fellow physically disabled, chronically ill, mentally ill, neurodivergent, terminally ill community members, and those allies helping to advocate and raise our voices.
1 in 5 people are disabled, and most are invisible impairments. Be kind, be careful with your words and be accepting. There is a lot of ableism and stigma in society for people who identify as disabled to look or act a certain way, but disability is a spectrum, it's fluid and comes in a variety of severeness.
If you don't feel like you're "disabled enough" to identify as disabled, I hear you, and you belong.

Quick Review: I'll Let Myself In by Hannah Diviney Rating: 5/5
This was an incredible memoir by Hannah, Diviney, a promising young writer, journalist and disability advocate from Australia who clearly, succinctly and cleverly writes about the myriad struggles of growing up as a disabled girl and all the strife that comes with it. Highly recommend to anyone looking to pick something up for International Day of People With Disabilities (Dec 3) this weekend!

Happy International Day of Persons with Disabilities everyone!
Your disability doesn't make you worth less. Needing accommodations doesn't make you attention-seeking or a burden to others. You're allowed to exist just the way you are. Don't let ableists tell you otherwise. Not today, not any other day.

I had a MASSIVE win today. The celebration for International Day of People with Disability I organised went really well - 50 people in the room and 250+ online from 3 organisations in close proximity to mine. The presentation by our guest speaker (who I chose) was really good and engaging and I was on the following panel discussion.
We went 10 mins overtime and still had 150+ people on the line when it finished and I personally received over 20 messages and emails from people saying how good it was and how important and impactful my points were. Also had a bunch of extra people sign up to join the Staff Disability Network and several people approached me at my desk afterwards for a chat.
I'm feeling pjysucally and emotionally exhausted now but this was a really really good day.

"Others with invisible disabilities have told me stories of times they've chosen not to seek help for symptoms like debilitating pain after feeling dismissed the last time they sought support."
"I know from my own experiences, when you're so used to having difficulties convincing those around you you're worthy of support, the validation of feeling genuinely heard — by a doctor, a journalist, or anyone at all — is liberating."

Posted @withrepost • @newdisabledsouth Today we acknowledge #IDPWD with some reminders: •Celebrate disabled lives every day •We don’t exist to inspire you •Collective liberation is the goal •Our ability to produce within an oppressive system does not determine our worth •Nothing about us without us https://www.instagram.com/p/CmJ9HIFplPpfvbGshLezriSFAmAhaSM9jTzPxs0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Posted @withrepost • @tiltingthelens To mark today’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities, at @TiltingTheLens, we share a brief manifesto with some of our key principles featuring eight actionable tips and insights to embed into your day-to-day to help create a more equitable world for everyone. 1. Disability is not a negative word. Disability is central to human existence. We need to culturally reposition #disability from a perspective that is tied to sympathy or charity, to one that embraces #community and alliance based on #pride, creativity, dignity, and justice. 2. With Disabled people, not for Disabled people. Disabled people live in a world not designed for them. We must create solutions by partnering with Disabled people. Ask yourself: “Who is not in the room?” 3. Intersectionality must be a key consideration. The Disabled community is not a monolith. Intentionality and the inclusion of those who are multiply-marginalized must be a key consideration. 4. Accessible design is beautiful design. We believe that innovative, accessible and universal #design solutions can prioritize form & function, and be aesthetically pleasing at the same time. 5. Create solutions for one, extend them to many. Our attempts at inclusion should not be othering by design. 6. #Accessibility must be an explicit invitation, not merely an accommodation that must be reasonable. Because, who decides what’s reasonable? 7. If inclusion is only embedded in the present, change will be a moment – not a movement. The system by which we measure success is not designed for everyone to thrive. In our quest for equity and justice, we must build a pipeline of talent, starting with scholarships and bursaries that give access to #education. 8. Listen, learn and lead. If you are reading or listening to this post, it is most likely that you already have an interest in this work. We need you to engage your colleagues, your families and your friends. Use the privilege and power that is within your grasp to create a more equitable world. Keep asking others: “Is this accessible?” Image descriptions in comments. #IDPWD https://www.instagram.com/p/ClxY1FZuxAs/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Thank you, @adultmusicalive for writing this special #IDPWD article about me and my recent success on @atomicmusicaus 's #Atomic100, where I had 14 songs in their #Top100 Thank you so much for the support. Read the full article at my bio or here: https://adultmusicalive.com/2022/12/03/bette-gets-fourteen-in-the-atomic-100/ [ID: Slide 1: A pink screenshot of Bette's linktree. Icons for different social media pages are presebr and two links, below, reading "Stay up-to-date with Bette" and "Bette gets Fourteen in the Atomic Hundred" which has been circled. Slide 2: a screenshot of the article with a light green article showing the bold yellow "ADULT MUSIC ALIVE" logo with text saying "We love music", a menu button and the heading "Bette Gets Fourteen In The Atomic Hundred". Slide 3: A screenshot from the article, reading "Dec 3 2022 An artist on Atomic would be happy if one of their songs make the Atomic Hundred for this year and Bette Foord had the same thoughts as a lot of great artists had good runs on the atomic chart throughout the year & nothing was certain. Bette got a massive surprise when 14 of her songs were played between 60 & 100th, imagine that 14th of the list all to yourself which may annoy people for having so much but you're here because you put yourself in the running to be there." Slide 4:An image from Atomic of Bette's blue album art for "Sometimes I Hate My Body" on a cheater print background, saying "SONG SPOTLIGHT". Text from the article says "Lastly her latest single, "Sometimes I Hate My Body" was spotlighted by Atomic making more people aware..."] #Atomic #dysauotonomia #AussieMusicScene #Awareness #Article #BetteFoordMusic #AtomicRadio #AussieRadio (at Over The Moon) https://www.instagram.com/p/ClvIAr2SO9g/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
