Original post date from Middle East Eye - November 5, 2023
Check this post for the transcript and video of Bisan talking more recently about persons with disabilities in Gaza and their unique struggle to survive the daily airstrikes.
The fact that we have to be constantly pleading peoples right to live is so frustrating and I know it's nothing new but still. We highlight the innocence of children and the vulnerability of children, of the elderly, of persons with disabilities but the truth is they're human and that should be enough. The imperial powers say otherwise and they take it a step further by dehumanising Palestinians at every turn so we have no choice but to highlight all these groups and humanise them as much as we can.
Palestine deserves to be free of the oppressor. Palestinians deserve every right granted to human beings. And you know what's a good first step to ensuring they have these rights? A PERMANENT CEASEFIRE. Free Palestine 🇵🇸

Want to help Minmo grow strong and healthy? Then please consider donating to help out my sweet child! Can't/don't want donate? Then just sharing around is more than enough to help! Full details can be found here as well.

Tldr Minmo’s been to the vet twice, third time will be today. She’ll have an x-ray at the least which is more expensive than the last two visits. Will possibly need further treatment. I am a disabled person living off of disability payments alone which are far below the poverty line, making it hard to get by day to day without any extra expenses.

It's December 3rd. 👨‍🦽 On this day in 1992, the United Nations held its first annual International Day of Persons with Disabilities to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights, and well-being of persons with disabilities. The UN's goal is to increase our awareness of the benefits we all gain by integrating persons with disabilities into our political, social, economic, and cultural lives to make our world more inclusive, accessible, and sustainable.
This day is a call to action to mobilize support at local, regional, and national levels in order to increase disability prevention and rehabilitation funding; to implement or strengthen laws guaranteeing the rights of persons with disabilities to take part fully in the development of their societies, to enjoy living conditions equal to those of other citizens, and to have an equal share in the improved conditions that result from socio-economic development.
Roughly 15 percent of the world's population – more than one billion people – live with a disability of some sort. Let's do what we can to help each and every one of us live our lives to the fullest as Stephen Hawking, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Helen Keller, Frida Kahlo, and Ludwig Van Beethoven did, and as Stevie Wonder, Malala Yousafzai, and Greta Thunberg do now, shall we? ☮️ Peace… Jamiese of Pixoplanet

People living with disabilities have the right to ...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Article 25 – Health
  States Parties recognize that persons with disabilities have the right to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health without discrimination on the basis of disability. States Parties shall take all appropriate measures to ensure access for persons with disabilities to health services that are gender-sensitive, including health-related rehabilitation. In particular, States Parties shall:
a) Provide persons with disabilities with the same range, quality and standard of free or affordable health care and programmes as provided to other persons, including in the area of sexual and reproductive health and population-based public health programmes;
b) Provide those health services needed by persons with disabilities specifically because of their disabilities, including early identification and intervention as appropriate, and services designed to minimize and prevent further disabilities, including among children and older persons;
c) Provide these health services as close as possible to people’s own communities, including in rural areas;
d) Require health professionals to provide care of the same quality to persons with disabilities as to others, including on the basis of free and informed consent by, inter alia, raising awareness of the human rights, dignity, autonomy and needs of persons with disabilities through training and the promulgation of ethical standards for public and private health care;
e) Prohibit discrimination against persons with disabilities in the provision of health insurance, and life insurance where such insurance is permitted by national law, which shall be provided in a fair and reasonable manner;
f) Prevent discriminatory denial of health care or health services or food and fluids on the basis of disability.
The WHO QualityRights tool kit provides countries with practical information and tools for assessing and improving quality and human rights standards in mental health and social care facilities. The tool kit is based on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. It provides practical guidance on:
the human rights and quality standards that should be respected, protected and fulfilled in both inpatient and outpatient mental health and social care facilities;
preparing for and conducting a comprehensive assessment of facilities; and
reporting findings and making appropriate recommendations on the basis of the assessment.
The tool kit is designed for use in low-, middle- and high-income countries. It can be used by many different stakeholders, including dedicated assessment committees, nongovernmental organizations, national human rights institutions, national health or mental health commissions, health service accreditation bodies and national mechanisms established under international treaties to monitor implementation of human rights standards and others with an interest in promoting the rights of people with disabilities.
The WHO QualityRights tool kit is an essential resource, not only for putting an end to past neglect and abuses but also for ensuring high-quality services in the future.

"low support needs disabled people are often not believed to have a disability at all and therefore struggle to get accommodations."
"high support needs disabled people's accommodations are often seen as 'too much' and therefore are not met."
"neurodivergent people's needs are often dismissed because nothing is physically wrong with them."
"physically disabled people people often cannot physically access buildings and people refuse to do anything about it."
"invisibly disabled people are seen as lazy by society."
"visibly disabled people are ostracized from society."
IT'S ALMOST LIKE THERE'S NO SUCH THING AS A SOCIALLY ACCEPTABLE DISABILITY

anyway here's to disabled people who are not healing. disabled people who are not recovering, ever. people with disabilities that only get worse and worse over time. people who cannot access treatment for their disabilities or whose disabilities simply aren't treatable. people who know they'll only get more and more disabled as time goes on. people who know their disability will kill them sooner or later. you are seen, you are important, you are not dead weight, and you deserve support.

Fat people deserve mobility aids, too. No matter if it's connected to their fatness or not, because having a mobility issue that is connected to one's fatness won't change that they're still fat and still have the issue at hand. Fat people don't deserve to "tough it out" because fatness should be this divine punishment doled out to those who "deserve" it. Fat disabled people deserve to have the peace of mind that they can exist in whatever way is most comfortable and accessible to them

so: masking: good, unequivocally. please mask and please educate others on why they should mask to make the world safer for immune compromised people to participate in.
however: masking is not my policy focus and it shouldn't be yours, either. masking is a very good mitigation against droplet-born illnesses and a slightly less effective (but still very good) mitigation against airborne illnesses, but its place in the pyramid of mitigation demands is pretty low, for several reasons:
it's an individual mitigation, not a systemic one. the best mitigations to make public life more accessible affect everyone without distributing the majority of the effort among individuals (who may not be able to comply, may not have access to education on how to comply, or may be actively malicious).
it's a post-hoc mitigation, or to put it another way, it's a band-aid over the underlying problem. even if it was possible to enforce, universal masking still wouldn't address the underlying problem that it is dangerous for sick people and immune compromised people to be in the same public locations to begin with. this is a solvable problem! we have created the societal conditions for this problem!
here are my policy focuses:
upgraded air filtration and ventilation systems for all public buildings. appropriate ventilation should be just as bog-standard as appropriately clean running water. an indoor venue without a ventilation system capable of performing 5 complete air changes per hour should be like encountering a public restroom without any sinks or hand sanitizer stations whatsoever.
enforced paid sick leave for all employees until 3-5 days without symptoms. the vast majority of respiratory and food-borne illnesses circulate through industry sectors where employees come into work while experiencing symptoms. a taco bell worker should never be making food while experiencing strep throat symptoms, even without a strep diagnosis.
enforced virtual schooling options for sick students. the other vast majority of respiratory and food-borne illnesses circulate through schools. the proximity of so many kids and teenagers together indoors (with little to no proper ventilation and high levels of physical activity) means that if even one person comes to school sick, hundreds will be infected in the following few days. those students will most likely infect their parents as well. allowing students to complete all readings and coursework through sites like blackboard or compass while sick will cut down massively on disease transmission.
accessible testing for everyone. not just for COVID; if there's a test for any contagious illness capable of being performed outside of lab conditions, there should be a regulated option for performing that test at home (similar to COVID rapid tests). if a test can only be performed under lab conditions, there should be a government-subsidized program to provide free of charge testing to anyone who needs it, through urgent cares and pharmacies.
the last thing to note is that these things stack; upgraded ventilation systems in all public buildings mean that students and employees get sick less often to begin with, making it less burdensome for students and employees to be absent due to sickness, and making it more likely that sick individuals will choose to stay home themselves (since it's not so costly for them).
masking is great! keep masking! please use masking as a rhetorical "this is what we can do as individuals to make public life safer while we're pushing for drastic policy changes," and don't get complacent in either direction--don't assume that masking is all you need to do or an acceptable forever-solution, and equally, don't fall prey to thinking that pushing for policy change "makes up" for not masking in public. it's not a game with scores and sides; masking is a material thing you can do to help the individual people you interact with one by one, and policy changes are what's going to make the entirety of public life safer for all immune compromised people.

If you have a stockpile you are an addict
Btw you have to refill on the same day you run out of medication
Btw you will have seizures and possibly die if you miss your medication
Btw the pharmacy will not order your medication in advance of the one day you are allowed to call and refill it
But you are an addict who should be criminalized if you have a few days stockpiled so you don’t have a seizure and die.
This is a normal way to treat disabled people who need medication that keeps them from dying.

Building accessible skill training for persons with disabilities
Tumblr media
The term “accessible training” suggests that there is a space set aside for training that isn’t available. That location did exist, but it ought to be long since off the map by now. Everybody must receive training. If not, it leads to imbalances within your organisation, missing opportunities, and inequality. Not only is creating accessible skill training for persons with disability “the right thing to do,” but it’s also “the most mutually beneficial” course of action. However, it doesn’t occur by itself.

boy it would be nice to be able to google something related to personality disorders, psychosis, intellectual disabilities, autism, DID/OSDD, etcetera without finding majority articles that are like “how to deal with a person with X” “how to cope with your child with X” “how to spot someone faking X” “can people with X be cured?”
