Jess Mariano x Reader
Pairing: Jess Mariano x reader
Warnings: none
Summary: it's cold outside and Jess helps you out
Word count: 1.1k
Tumblr media
You’d been walking around town for a while now, the chilly night air starting to get to you. You rubbed your arms to get some semblance of warmth as you tried to think of what to do. You didn't want to go home, not with your mother bound to be there. After the vicious fight you two had, you had no longing to be anywhere near her, which unfortunately left you with no place to sleep tonight. You knew you should go back, you knew it would be the smart, reasonable thing to do, but you just couldn't bring yourself to do it as you remembered the words your mother had spat at you as she stared at you with revulsion.
Of course you’d had fights with your mother before, but when she wanted she could be particularly cruel, and tonight she had certainly wanted to be cruel. She was pissed at you because you’d failed an important test at school, a failure she said had to do with a certain raven-haired boy currently residing above Luke’s diner. She believed that Jess was a bad influence on you and since you'd refused to stop hanging out with him, your mother sought other ways to convince you he was bad, namely blaming every single failure you had onto him. You were sick of defending him to your mother whenever you made a mistake, and so you had said some things you shouldn’t have, which caused the massive fight to implode, and here you were. Walking around Stars Hollow late on a Tuesday night with nowhere to sleep.
You were about to relent and go home, wondering if you’d be able to sneak into your second story window, when you heard someone call your name.
“Y/n.”
You looked up and found Jess leaning out of his window, staring at you with a slight smirk and smug expression.
“Jess?” you asked in disbelief.
His smirk widened “Y/n. Enjoy your walk?”
Your brows furrowed in confusion. “What?”
“Seen you walking around for a while. Cold night for a stroll, don’t you think?”
You let out a huff, crossing your arms as you stared at the boy you were so reluctantly fond of.
“Shut up,” you muttered, though you made sure you were loud enough for him to hear you.
“I’m guessing that means you don’t want to come in for a hot chocolate.”
Your head perked up as you stared at him. “Are you offering?”
Jess rolled his eyes. “I wouldn’t very well say it if I wasn’t offering, would I?”
You grinned and walked up to the diner, crossing your arms to savour any warmth you might have while you waited for Jess to come downstairs. How slow could he be? Eventually you saw the diner light up and Jess walk towards the door, his stride leisurely despite the fact you were contracting hypothermia right that second.
Jess did open the door though, and as soon as he did you were inside, as far from the door as possible as you felt your whole body shiver in delight at the change of temperature. Maybe you wouldn’t contract hypothermia after all.
Jess snorted at your reaction and started making the hot chocolate while you trailed behind him, unused to being in the diner when everyone else was gone.
“Where’s Luke?” you asked, eyes darting around the place as if Luke would spawn there any moment.
Jess shrugged, his back to you as he stirred the hot chocolates. “Out at something. Can’t quite remember. He’s not gonna be back till later.”
You raised your eyebrows, checking your watch which said 11:45pm. “When exactly is later?”
Jess shrugged again. “I dunno. Later.”
You rolled your eyes but gratefully accepted the warm cup of hot chocolate he placed into your hands. You took a sip, burning your tongue slightly but you didn’t care. It was nice and warm and you were still so cold after spending most of the night outside with the snow in just a flimsy cardigan.
“You look cold,” Jess observed over his hot chocolate.
“You don’t say?”
Jess placed his mug on the counter. “I’m serious. How long were you out there?”
You checked your watch again. “I don’t know. A few hours? I left just after dinner so…”
Jess didn’t need to ask why. You’d complained enough about your mother that Jess knew when you had a fight it tended to be big, and staying outside while it snowed for hours was a pretty clear sign that whatever happened had been big.
Jess sighed. “You’re an idiot, you know that? Come on, I’ve got blankets upstairs.”
Jess took your hand and you complied, though you brought your hot chocolate with you. When you arrived in Luke and Jess’s tiny apartment, Jess led you to his bed where there were clothes, books, and most importantly, blankets scattered across the area.
You carefully placed you cup on a table and found one of Jess’s jumpers to put on, as well as not one, not two, but three blankets that you wrapped tightly around you. Still, you couldn’t stop the chills racking your body from all your time outside. Jess had sat next to you on his bed and was quietly watching you while you froze away, until he let out a frustrated sigh and tugged you towards him.
“What are you doing-“
You didn’t get to finish before Jess ripped you of every layer you had just wrapped yourself in – minus the jumper – and you squawked in outrage. Jess ignored you, rewrapping both of you in the cocoon of blankets and pulling you closer until your head rested against his chest.
“There,” he said. “Body heat.”
You rolled your eyes but nestled further into his embrace, feeling the delicious heat surround you. The two of you stayed there like that, holding on to one another, until you tilted your head to look up at him.
“Thank you,” you said. “For doing this.”
Jess raised an eyebrow. “Doing what, exactly?”
You shrugged. “Letting me stay over, keeping me warm, the hot chocolate.”
Jess looked at you silently before carefully brushing some hair away from your face. His hand stopped on your face, before a slow smile crept across his face.
“You’re all good,” he said quietly, tugging you closer to him.
You placed your head into the crook of his neck so he couldn’t see you smiling, and slowly, as you listened to the steady beat of Jess’s heart and felt some feeling come back to your fingers and toes, you drifted to sleep, wrapped up in Jess’s embrace.

Midnight Rain | J.M.
Tumblr media
📝 Title: Midnight Rain
📚 Requested: Yes/No
✍ Summary: The story of how you fell in love with Jess Mariano and how second chances exist
🎶: Midnight Rain by Taylor Swift
💌: my first Jess Mariano fic, hope you guys like it!
You never knew what love truly felt like until Jess Mariano walked into your life.
It was just another typical day, walking into Luke’s diner for your morning dose of caffeine with Rory while her mother went to get a newspaper.
Then there he was, wearing a metallica t-shirt with red long sleeves, bickering with Luke about his choice of outfit for the day.
“Hello?” Rory waved a hand in front of your face with a teasing smile, “Do you want to sit down or are you just going to stand there?”
Clearing your throat, you gave the mystery boy one more glance before you nodded, “Yeah, of course we’re sitting down.”
While Rory placed the order, you pulled out your current read and started where you had left off.
“Emily Dickinson?” A deep voice said as coffee was poured into your cup, “A remarkable poet and woman, or so I’ve heard.”
Looking up, you see the mysterious boy now standing in front of you, “She is. You’ve read her work?”
The boy shrugged, “A little here and there.”
You nodded to the book in your hands, “You can borrow this one if you want, I’m just rereading it anyway.”
“Really?” He asked, a mischievous smile growing on his lips, “You wouldn’t mind?”
“Would I be offering if I did?” You countered.
“Touche.” He chuckled as you handed him the book, “Thanks.”
“You’re Luke’s nephew right?”
“I’d rather be known as Jess. And from what I can deduct, you’re Rory’s friend?”
“I’d rather be known as Y/N.”
“Done.” Jess walked in pace with you as you were on your way to the bookstore.
“Done with what?” You asked, making him hand you the Emily Dickinson collection of poems you loaned him three days ago.
“The book.” He answered as you took it from him.
“What’s the verdict then?”
“It was okay, also I did write some thoughts in the margins.”
Flipping open the book, you were met with his neat handwriting filling up all the empty spaces, “Wow. I thought you said you haven’t read it much?”
Jess gave a smile, “What is much anyway?”
“Point taken.” You smiled as he pushed open the door for you.
“You seem to be alone today.” Jess noted as he sat in the chair in front of you, “Not here with the rest of your coffee trio?”
You laughed, closing your book to give him your full attention, “Sadly no. Rory is off tolerating Paris since the latter is freaking out over something and Lorelai is attending to something at the inn.”
“Pity.” Jess’ signature mischievous smirk in place, “But on the bright side, I guess I’ll have you all to myself.”
“Oh really?” You giggled.
Before Jess could give his witty remark, Luke could be heard from behind the counter, “Jess, I do not pay you to flirt with the customers!”
“First of all, you don’t pay me at all.” Jess stood up, coffee pot in hand, “Second, I only flirt with this particular customer.”
And before he left your table, he leaned forward and pecked you on the cheek.
You couldn’t control the smile that adorned your lips as the heat crawled its way up to your cheeks.
Oh, but Jess Mariano was far from done, “I’ll pick you up at 8 tomorrow night for our first date?” He calls out as he makes his way to the counter.
Looking over your shoulder, it kept all of your willpower just to stop yourself from laughing at Luke’s rather shocked expression, “Sounds like a perfect plan.”
“Fine, laugh all you want but no one else can change my mind on the fact that Romeo and Juliet is a complete scam.” Jess said, stabbing his chocolate ice cream with the small spoon the dessert came with.
You were quiet for a moment as you took a bite off your mint chocolate ice cream, making it seem like you were thinking about what he said, “I know right! Rory refuses to hear a word I say on the matter but how stupid can Romeo be to see that Juliet was breathing?”
“It was a sleeping potion, it would be impossible for her to not breathe.” Jess interjected.
“Yeah, and people have the audacity to call it the greatest love story of all time when the title clearly belongs to ‘The Notebook’.” You said, taking another spoonful of your ice cream.
“Mhm.” He nodded in agreement, “Alie and Noah beat out Romeo and Juliet anyday.”
“You know, you’re adorable whenever you talk about books.” Your boyfriend added.
You swear that your face is 13 shades of red right now, and not because of the summer heat, “So do you.”
“I’m serious.”
“I am too.”
He rolls his eyes with a chuckle, tucking a stray strand of hair behind your ear, “Everything you do is adorable. From the way you would practically scrutinize every single bad decision in a tv show to the way you like to smell newly-bought books before putting it away.”
“Oh, so now we’re pointing out my awful quirks?” You teased.
“Lorelai’s sarcasm is now starting to rub off of you.” Jess mused, “Can I kiss you?”
“You better. ‘Cause I’ll be so mad if you don’t.”
It was surprising how you didn’t break the door as you ran into the diner.
“Luke, where’s Jess?” You said, hoping that the envelope in your hand wouldn’t be too crumpled with how tight you were holding on to it.
“In the apar-” He didn’t need to finish his statement as you bounded up the stairs faster than anyone has ever done.
“Looks like somebody’s excited.” Lorelai noted with a smile to which Luke just shrugged.
Immediately jumping into his arms once the door opened, it was a surprise how Jess was still able to keep his balance.
“Woah, someone might’ve got a sugar rush today.” Your boyfriend teased as you started to calm down a little.
“My book is getting published!” Finally brandishing the news you wanted to relay, you held out the envelope to him.
“See? I told you, they’d love you!” Jess grinned, taking the letter out and reading it over.
“I mean it’s nothing permanent yet.” You said, smile still intact, “The book still has to go through a round of edits and all, there’s no contract yet but they’re interested!”
In his delight, Jess picked you up and spun you around before pecking a kiss to your lips, “C’mon let’s go out.”
“What for?” You asked, still dizzy yet you weren’t sure if it was from being spun around or being kissed.
“Duh, to celebrate? What else would we go out for?” He then grabbed his coat before pulling you out of the apartment.
“Jess, you know it’s not that easy.” You sighed, tired of having to explain this over and over again.
“You’re the one who’s making it complicated.” He argued.
“Jess, the publication firm specifically told me that if I moved out of Stars Hollow then the deal is over. My book won’t get published.” You said, exasperated, “Hence, I cannot move to Philadelphia with you.”
Jess was getting tired of this discussion too, “Then pull it out! I’m going to be writing my book too, then we can look for a publishing firm together.”
“And put my dream on hold?” You gave a humorless chuckle, “Let me think about it, oh wait, the answer is practically obvious - I won’t.”
“So you’re going to choose your dreams over me?”
“Yes Jess, why on earth would you expect me not to?”
“I don’t know because you love me!”
You scoffed, shaking your head in disbelief, “Just because I love you doesn’t mean I’ll compromise my dreams, my future for you.”
“I would’ve done that for you.” Jess countered.
“Then I’m sorry if I can’t say the same.” You could feel your throat tightening with every passing moment, you knew how this would end - and you hated it.
“If that’s the case, then I’m going to Philadelphia with or without you.” He said, packing up the last of his clothes and stuff.
“And I’m not stopping you.” The tears were now freely dripping down your face, like raindrops on a windowsill.
“Fine.” Jess said, not being able to look at you since he hated seeing you cry then without so much as another word he left your apartment, slamming the door on his way out.
It’s been years since that fateful day. It took you a while to get over it but as Lorelai said, “Trains barely even wait for you at the station, so why would life?”
Part of you didn’t regret staying in Stars Hollow, you already had 3 published books to date and was now working on your 4th one. But a part of you would always ask the “what-if?”
The other night, you saw Jess on the news - proudly promoting the book he had just published. You had forgiven him, after all the time had passed, but you can’t help and wonder about the life you gave away.
“Oh hey, can you go get some coffee to-go? Mom needs me to save her from another one of Ms. Patty’s set-ups.” Rory said, looking up from her pager.
You nodded, “Yeah sure.”
Personally, you could never tire of the ambience that meets you when you walk into Luke’s diner, it’s hardly changed over the years.
“Hello Y/N, let me guess, a cup of coffee?” Luke greeted you with a smile, thankfully still fond of you despite what had happened with his nephew.
“Three to go actually.” You said, returning the smile.
“I see some things never really change.” A familiar voice, one you had thought that you would never hear again, reached your ears.
There he was, standing by the door in all of his glory, as if he never left.
“Jess.” You said in awe, not noticing that Luke had started tending to other customers - giving you and your old flame some privacy.
“Y/N.” He may have been older, but the same boyish, mischievous smile was there.
Even if you had imagined this day before, every word you had rehearsed was reduced to rubble. You tried to think of something to say, but everything you could ever possibly know in the English language is now gone.
“I see you’re now one of Stars Hollow’s pride and joy.” Jess teased, slowly walking towards you.
“Pride and joy may be a little of an overstatement.” You said, “I see life’s been treating you well too. Loved how you foreshadowed the plot twist.”
Jess sat down on the bar stool nearest to you, “All of your books were simply impeccable.”
Then with a smile, he pulled a book out of his bag, “Though, I must say, your second one is my favorite.”
Your heart sank as you braced yourself for the teasing/mocking you get in a few short minutes.
Jess had started to read the synopsis, “He was a montage. A love potion that works in slow motion. He could hardly be described as sunshine but he wanted it comfortable and stayed the same. She was midnight rain, she wanted that pain, would rather chase that fame and all of her changed. Their love was like a postcard of paradise, picture perfect - a guaranteed happy ending. But is anything in life ever guaranteed?”
You sighed, “Jess-”
“It’s about us isn’t it?” He said, not a trace of any childish humor in his tone.
“If you mean that our relationship served as an inspiration, then yes.” You said.
“Hm.” Jess contemplated, tracing the small picture of you on the jacket cover, “But they had a happy ending.”
You shrugged, “A part of me dreamed of getting that ending.”
“And who says that it's too late for us to have that ending?” He asked, pushing himself off the stool and now standing right in front of you.
You tried not to get your hopes up, “Do you think we could make it work? Pick up where we left it off?”
He reached forward to push the hair out of your eyes, “I mean it won’t always be sunshine and rainbows. We’ll have fights and all but I think that I want to be able to have those fights with you and resolve them with you. Remember when we had that discussion about Romeo and Juliet?”
Furrowing your brows, you didn’t have a clue where this was going, “Yeah?”
“Alie and Noah may be able to beat out Romeo and Juliet anyday, but I never thought that their story was the greatest one.” Jess said.
“Then who’s?” Your heart was beating faster with every passing second as you had a hint on what the answer was.
“Ours.”
“But, what about your life in Philadelphia? What about your publishing firm?”
“I can work remotely, then I’ll just go down to Philadelphia if I have to fix something and all. I lost you once, I can’t bear to lose you again.”
Persistent. One of the many things that made you fall in love with Luke’s nephew in the first place.
Without missing a beat, you grabbed him by the collar of his leather jacket and pressed your lips to his.
“I’m guessing that’s a yes then?”
“Obviously.”

𝐆𝐢𝐥𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐆𝐢𝐫𝐥𝐬 𝐅𝐚𝐧𝐟𝐢𝐜
Where Rory Gilmore writes a rather destructive article about Jess Mariano, a famous author.
However, things get out of hand when Jess goes after Rory to get satisfaction. Seeming to be very, very angry.
Tumblr media
☄︎. *. ⋆⋆·˚ ༘ *
It was a pleasant morning for Rory Gilmore. Her e-mail inbox was overflowing with countless messages about her newest article.
Hugging the hot mug of coffee in her hands, Rory smiled, lying face down on the bed. She stared at her laptop screen, reading the super positive feedback she had received from Alexa Moon.
The article had been a success. Writing about Jess Mariano had been the best thing she had ever done. Although he was a well-known author and also a New York Times bestseller, critiquing others' works was Rory's born gift. And she definitely loved it.
Rory was still smiling, surfing excitedly over her email list, when someone knocked on the door. A loud and violent and angry knock, which repeated itself countless times after the previous knock.
Rory found it strange. Who could it be?
Slowly and suspiciously, she got out of bed, left her mug on the bedside table, and walked to the door.
As soon as she opened it, however, Rory's eyes widened, taking a step back.
It was Jess. Jess Mariano. With a unique expression of anger on his face.
She watched, stunned, as he tried to control his own breathing, his lips crisp and his eyes glittering with anger. His chest rose and fell, giving away the fact that he had possibly run that far.
“H-how did you get here?”, Rory asked in desperation. “How do you know where I live? What are you doing here?”
Instead of answering, Jess let out a sarcastic laugh, running a hand through his hair.
“So you know who I am. Of course you do. You know so well that you even wrote an article defaming me, didn't you?”
Even though she knew that the neighbors must have been listening, since he was standing in the middle of the hallway, Rory just bowed her head, slightly embarrassed.
“It wasn't a slur”, she muttered, as if trying to convince herself of the fact.
Jess moved closer, tilting his head to hear better. He looked completely disbelieving.
“Wasn't it? Are you telling me this wasn't a smear?”
He rubbed the page of an article violently across Rory's face. It surprised her. Was he carrying a copy of his article? Maybe he had printed it out himself so that he could have proof of what he was saying, but still...
Rory stammered, unsure of what to say. The truth was that there was really no way to defend herself. She knew what she had done was wrong. She only went down this path because she was desperate, afraid of losing her job. Finally, realizing what she had to do, Rory swallowed and bowed her head again.
“I'm sorry”, she murmured.
Jess Mariano went back to pacing around in front of his apartment door. He seemed to be having trouble calming himself down.
“Unbelievable”, he grumbled. “Unbelievable.”
“Um... you…”, Rory began, looking back uncomfortably before turning back to face him, "would you like to come in? So we can talk about it in here?”
Jess stopped, looking at her seriously. He was still angry. She could tell right away.
When the writer didn't answer, Rory just stepped aside, inviting him in.
“Please”, she said. “I would be happy to explain why I did that.”
Finally, seeing that he didn't have much choice, Jess walked contritely inside, maintaining his rigid posture as he entered. Rory hurried to close the door, turning awkwardly toward his visitor. Not knowing what to do or say, she began running her hands through her jeans, which were already sweaty from the sudden event. She felt guilty. Especially knowing that she had enjoyed writing the article, that she had not regretted publishing it. This was the worst part.
“I... didn't mean to offend you with my publication”, Rory began. “It was just... an article, pointing out where you could improve. You... you can take it in the positive direction, you know”
She was sure that her words sounded totally uncertain and untrustworthy. Feeling exposed and embarrassed, Rory crossed her arms over her chest, as if trying to protect herself.
“Bright side?”, Jess repeated aggressively, turning to her. “Is that what you have to tell me? Take it to the positive side?”
She noticed that he had put his hands on his waist, a gesture men only do when they are really angry.
“Well... yes", Rory said. “I mean, one way or another, I publicized your work. I'm sure my article will make people interested in your book. In the end, everybody wins.”
“It's not a matter of winning or losing”, Jess said snidely, stepping closer to Rory. She took another step back, but that didn't intimidate him. “It's my image. An image that I didn't give you the right to use in an article. Even more so when you disrespect my work!”
“I was just being honest”, Rory said firmly, lifting his chin. “I didn't like your book and I wrote about it. Deal with it.”
Jess stopped walking. He half-lidded his eyes, analyzing her. Then he stepped forward. And another. Rory backed away, until she was forced to stop when her back slammed into the wall. She held her breath. Jess Mariano kept coming closer, stopping only when his face was inches from Rory's. It was then that the anger stopped.
And it was then that the anger seemed to vanish from the writer's countenance. With the rapidity of a particle of light, Jess's gaze descended to her mouth, landing there continuously. Silence invaded the place. All Rory could hear was her own heartbeat, seeming to resound against his ears. His breath beat against her face, causing her mind to clear immediately.
Suddenly, a magnetism seemed to want to join her lips to his. Rory realized that she needed that. She needed to come closer, just a little bit closer.
Taking her completely by surprise and at an astonishing speed, Jess kissed her, devouring her lips aggressively, pulling her to him, holding her in his arms. Rory found himself immediately wanting more. Longing for more. She savored Jess Mariano's soft lips, his tongue roaming her mouth, the way he seemed to desire her. Her skin burned, the energy pulsing through Rory's veins.
The feeling of happiness and desire and lust mingled inside her. So all she did was give herself up to that moment. Nothing else mattered, after all. Least of all the fact that she was just kissing Jess Mariano, the famous author that Rory had criticized.
Life really was a funny thing.

PLEASEE AND I MEAN PLEASEE DO SOME JESS MARIANO X SHY READER!!
𝐔𝐍𝐒𝐏𝐎𝐊𝐄𝐍 𝐖𝐎𝐑𝐃𝐒 !
Tumblr media
pairings! jess mariano x shy fem reader
warnings! bullying… nothing else!!! very simple blurb
a/n! been writing like 400 word blurbs lately and it’s so fun. so simple, i love it. but i promise i won’t be lazy and i’ll start writing longer oneshots i swear 😭 also i didn’t even reread so if it sucks idc
JESS MARIANO had never been one for small talk. He preferred to keep to himself and let his actions speak for themselves. That's why it came as a surprise to everyone in Stars Hollow when he started dating a shy girl who spent way too much time overthinking her choice of words.
She was quiet, reserved, and had a hard time opening up to people. She was often the target of teasing and ridicule from her classmates, who mistook her shyness for weakness. But Jess saw something in her that no one else ever bothered to.
He liked the way she listened to him when he talked, and the way she didn't feel the need to fill the silence with meaningless chatter. They spent most of their time together in comfortable silence, each lost in their own thoughts. Or admiring one another.
One day, while they were walking through town, a group of idiotic jocks started taunting Emily for her quietness. They made fun of her for being too shy to speak up during her presentation the day before. It wasn't hard for Jess to notice the interaction immediately, considering his eyes were always scanning for his girlfriend. But the hurt look in her eye was enough for him to want to pounce.
Without a word, he stepped forward and confronted the bullies. He didn't raise his voice or use any physical force, but his calm and collected demeanor was enough to make them back off. A simple, "Can you guys go back and  get benched by Coach Rivers and stop messing with my girlfriend?" The baseball team didn't even bat an eye before heading off. Not wanting to mess with the guy who'd bashed their friend, Dean's, skull a couple months before.
The couple found comfort in each other's company and learned to appreciate the beauty in silence. Jess began to see the world in a new light. He realized that sometimes, the most powerful messages are the ones left unspoken.

So I've been reading your fics for a while because they're beautiful and we need more Literati fics in this world, and they make me think a lot about parent-child relationships, and even though I'm practicing at commenting on fics, sometimes I don't have time or I forget or I don't have words, so I just wanted you to know that every chapter, every oneshot is a delight and a wonder to read, and I'm so thankful someone in this world loves Richard Siken and Jess Mariano as much as you do.
(my gosh that was a run-on sentence.)
oh my god thank u. SO much wtf wtf i don’t even know what to say?? this made my day you have no idea <3

Fake Dating || Jess Mariano
Tumblr media
My entry for day 5 of our Christmas Calendar. Find all the information here. We’d love for you to join us.
Summary: Reader is invited to her ex boyfriend’s Christmas Party and doesn’t want to show up alone. Playing pretend leads to a confession.
Likes, reblogs, comments are all much appreciated. I am German. Sometimes I get the tense wrong or make mistakes. I am useless when it comes to punctuation. Go easy on me, please.
Tumblr media
There’s something magical about Stars Hollow in the winter. The snow covers the ground and the roofs like a layer of marshmallow fluff and Christmas lights twinkle at you from every corner.
It’s like a scene straight from a Hallmark card brought to life.
Sounds like a little piece of paradise right here on earth, right? Like a dream.
Yeah not when you have to stomp through the snow, hands freezing, toes merely made of ice by this point, hair a mess atop your head, and all that fuels you to continue going is the anxiety coursing through your veins and the promise of warmth and a hot cup of coffee waiting for you at the end of your journey.
When she reaches the sacred halls of Luke’s cafe, a big scowl pulls the corners of (Y/N)’s lips downwards. Coming back home was supposed to be fun. It was supposed to feel the way it did when she was a kid. Safe and comforting and warm. Only everything is different.
A big mug of steaming coffee is set down in front of her before she can even properly sit down on the barstool by the counter. Luke greets her with his signature grunt that might seem grumpy to some but really it’s how he shows his love. Being at the receiving end should make you feel proud.
Okay, maybe not everything has changed. Maybe some things stayed the same. Even if it’s the little ones. Sometimes they mean everything.
“ What’s got you scowling like that ? “ he asks as he rings up the person by the register.
“ Hmm — the heartbreaking realization that we can not stop the passing of time and that with every ticking second the magic of Christmas gets lost a little more as our bitter little hearts grow colder? “
Luke takes a sigh, pinching the bridge of his nose in frustration. “ Look I already have one aggressively sarcastic jokester around right now, I can’t use another one. “
“ What do you mean? “
“ Jess is here. “
It’s like the sun cuts through her cloudy mind for a split second as the words register. There’s something about Jess she can never quite put into words. A silent understanding about the world and everything in it that he shares with her. Back when they were teenagers, angry and lost, the only place they found belonging, found understanding, was in each other.
And while she knows she never held the importance in his life that Rory did, while she was never at the receiving end of his romantic interest, she knows she meant something to him — means something. Sometimes you need to find someone else who’s lived their own tragedies in order to help you overcome yours.
Jess was her best friend and she was his. And while times have changed and distance has kept them apart lately, they both know the other is just a phone call away and a little part of their heart will always belong to each other.
“ Jess is here? “
“ I’m here. “ he announces his presence as he steps out from behind the curtain separating the stairs to the apartment from the cafe.
“ Woah, what’s got you looking all gloomy? “
“ That’s what I asked her but I only got a smartass answer. “ Luke points out before making his round across the room serving refills to eager customers trying to hide from the harsh winter winds raging outside.
“ So ? “
“ So, you didn’t tell me you were gonna be here. “
Jess just shrugs and averts his eyes in the way he always does. The way that makes him look so casually cool and unphased when (Y/N) knows he’s anything but. He has the biggest and softest heart of anyone she knows. It’s just hard sometimes, to let it show when the people who were supposed to love you most left it scarred and broken.
“ Didn’t know I was gonna be here but then Doula called last night and asked if I wanted to spend the week before Christmas with them too instead of just Christmas day and I didn’t have anything else to do anyway so — “
“ And you can’t say no to your sister. “
“ Yeah, that too. But back to you. The last time I saw you this sad was when you made me watch that Mickey Mouse Christmas movie that had you crying for like 3 hours after it ended."
"He sold his harmonica to buy Minnie a present Jess! He gave up his music for her."
"You gonna start crying again? "
"I might. Because it's sad and also just to annoy you."
"Okaaaay. Look just - just tell me what's up and maybe I can be talked into watching another cheesy movie if that would cheer you up a little."
He's sweet and gentle and he cares so much. And while she wishes he'd show this side of him to other people sometimes, to let them see the real him, there's a certain sense of pride that fills (Y/N)'s heart knowing she's one of the few people that part of him is reserved for.
"I don't think that's gonna be enough this time, although I appreciate the offer. I ran into Riley earlier."
" Riley Riley? From High School? "
" The same one. Who broke my heart and started dating one of my friends right after dumping me at the firelight festival. "
There's a dangerous gleam in Jess' eyes. One she's very familiar but hasn't seen in a long time, not since that one night at truncheon when he told her about Rory and Logan and how he felt used. When he called her drunk and sad. When -
"That guy is an asshole, nothing new. But I thought you were over him."
"I am. I totally am. But you know since we're all adults now and civil and we haven't seen each other in a while he thought it would be nice to invite me to this Christmas party they have tonight. "
"They?"
"Him and Lexi. The same girl he dumped me for. They are married now and, by the look of their house, pretty well off too. “
“ Okay, so what did you say? “
(Y/N) takes the last sip of coffee, letting the bitter taste settle on her tongue hoping that maybe it can overshadow the taste of regret and shame and sadness that has been stuck there ever since talking to Riley.
“ Well, what was I supposed to say? No ? “
“ Yes! That’s exactly what you should’ve said. Come on, Goose. Why would you say yes? “
“ I couldn’t say no. That would’ve made it look like I'm still into him or something.”
Jess only regards her with the signature Jess Mariano scowl and judgmental eyes. Not mean or malicious, just maybe a little disappointed.
"Maybe I'll go ahead and ask Lulu if she'll lend me Kirk for the night. Just so I don't have to show up alone, like a loser."
“ You’re not a loser. “
“ You’re my best friend. You’re basically contractually obligated to say that. “
"I don't remember signing - "
"Aah in pretty sure you did " (Y/N) interrupts him before pushing herself off of the barstool. " Alright, I gotta run. Need to figure out what to wear tonight and ugh this completely ruined my whole hair washing schedule. Anyway, I will come around tomorrow and report back about the epic failure of tonight's dinner. "
As she rushes out of the diner, red scarf fluttering behind her like a lick of fire, she yells a happy "thanks for the coffee, Luke" and just as the door is about to close, Jess can make out a faint "Bye Maverick. Love you." And though she said it a thousand times before it never fails to make his heart beat just a tiny bit faster.
"Bye Goose."
Tumblr media
She looks nice. Pretty even. (Y/N) has to admit that much as she regards herself in the mirror adorning the wall of the entryway. It's taken some time to do the hair and makeup but it looks good. Doesn't mean it feels good. Or right.
She wants nothing more than to slump back on her couch, stuff her face with junk food, and put on a Christmas movie. Maybe invite Jess over because… well Jess makes everything better. And it's not that she doesn't like getting dolled up or going out. If it was just any other place and any other person.
A knock on the front door shakes her from her daydream or rather day-nightmare?
There's a lot of faces she would have expected to see on the other side of the door. Stars Hollow is a tiny town with nosy people and friendly neighbors always ready for a quick chat. Not this though. She never would've expected him.
"Jess? What are you doing here? And dressed so fancy."
"It's not fancy," he huffs, a cloud of breath forming in the icy winter air " it's just dark Jeans and a white dress shirt."
If she didn't know him any better she'd describe him as bashful right then. And maybe it was the cold nipping at his cheeks but maybe, just maybe, there's a blush dusting his cheeks.
"Oh wow is that the man version of jeans and a nice top?"
"Huh?"
"Forget it," she waves him off, "what are you doing here?"
"You need a date and I need to get out of the house before Liz ropes me into one of her crystal healing circles. "
Now it's her time to blush.
"You want to be my date?"
He's quiet for a moment, contemplating his words, before nodding his casual, entirely unbothered Jess Mariano nod.
"Sure. I mean you read all those fake dating romance books. I know you do, don't even try to deny it. And I'm a good liar so we are basically made for this."
"Fake dating yeah … yeah that's right."
"So is that a yes? I can't wait to see pretty boy Riley's face when he sees us showing up together. Dude never liked me."
"Are you doing this to help me or to piss off Riley?"
"Little bit of both."
"Alright, I'll accept that. Let's go."
"You look beautiful, by the way."
"Thanks, Maverick."
"You're welcome, Goose."
Tumblr media
"Woah, I mean I knew they were rich but I didn't expect to be invited to a Gatsby party," (Y/N) exclaims, eyes wide with surprise.
There's a lot of people here. Entirely too many for her to feel truly comfortable. Tinsel and ribbon decorate each corner and just by walking up the driveway and entering the entrance hall, she's counted 12 perfectly decorated Christmas trees.
“ Well, let’s hope they don’t have a pool. “ Jess replies as they make their way through the crowd looking for food, or drinks, or both.
“ What’s that? “ Jess asks, lips pulled up in a questioning scowl, eyebrows furrowed in confusion at what he assumes to be the food. There are several big silver plates loaded with all kinds of cheeses and cured meats and other indefinable things.
"Food?"
"You sound convinced."
"Yeah, I guess maybe we should stick to the cheese and champagne for now."
"Very fancy," Jess remarks and raises his glass.
"Very fancy indeed," (Y/N) agrees and clings her glass with his before they both take a sip of the bubbly concoction.
"You know what this reminds me of?" Jess inquires as they weave their way through the crowds. "The dinner at the Independence Inn."
"The Bracebridge Dinner!"
"Yeaaah that one. Wouldn't be surprised if they bring out the horse-drawn carriages at some point later today."
Even to this day, there's still a sense of mischief in Jess' smile. It's not as prominent and pronounced as it used to be but it's still there.
"I remember you forcing me to commit a crime that night."
"What are you talking about?"
"The snowman."
"Oh my god," Jess lets out a mix between a laugh and a scoff. "It was a snowman. I hardly think that's considered a crime."
"It is in Stars Hollow. But hey at least it worked. It earned you brownie points with Rory."
The mood shifts. Not necessarily in a bad way just, something is different. It always is when Rory gets brought up. Sometimes (Y/N) thinks it's because that whole relationship left scars on Jess and sometimes she thinks it's because he still isn't entirely over her. She's not sure which hurts worse.
"Sure."
"What's - what's going on there anyway?"
"With Rory?"
"Yeah. She's back in Stars Hollow. You're visiting a lot. Might be time to rekindle a past love."
At those words Jess downs the rest of his champagne, a bitter look crossing his handsome face. "I think maybe that ship has sailed. Don't think I'm what she needs. And she's not what I need either. Not anymore."
His eyes lock with hers and for a moment she swears there is something there. A static in the air. A sizzling. Goosebumps rising on her skin and heart fluttering inside her chest and then -
"You came!" Riley's voice cuts through the air like the blaring of an emergency siren taking away all of what could be and what might've been and all the magic that came with it.
He still has the same swooping brown locks and those piercing green eyes and even now she can see why she fell in love with him at 17. He's the boy from the romcom, the teen drama heartthrob. He's the High School sweetheart that you marry, have kids with, buy a golden retriever with.
He's the one that leaves you for your friend. That laughs about your passions. That thinks money fixes everything.
Maybe it wasn't all that bad that they didn't work out. Maybe it was for the best.
"... and you brought Jess."
Before she can even react, she feels the weight of Jess' arm settle on her shoulder and pull her closer.
“Good to see you too, Riley. She’s allowed to bring her boyfriend, isn’t she?”
“Sure she is.”
There’s a wave of animosity crashing over them like a tidal wave only (Y/N) can feel none of it. Her heart is too busy beating out of her chest at the sound of Jess calling himself her boyfriend. Sure it’s all pretend. It’s all a lie. It’s all fake.
And yet it still makes her feel a fluttering inside her chest.
“We’ll come on, let’s fill up our drinks and you guys can tell me all about how — this happened. “
Riley leads them to a table and sits down before motioning to the waiter and getting all 3 of them a refill of their champagne flute.
"So, you two, huh?”
“Yup.” Jess responds, his lips popping the ‘p‘. “Us two.”
“How did that come along. I mean not that I’m surprised.”
“What do you mean?” (Y/N) asks, eyebrow raised in question. Sure, there’s always someone who asks about her and Jess and whether or not they are more than friends, but it’s usually people that don’t know them very well. Riley should know better.
“Come ooon. It was just a matter of time with you two. Everyone could see you were into each other. I mean, why do you think Jess hated me so much back in High School. It’s because he was jealous.”
There’s a sense of self-assurance and arrogance in Riley’s voice. Like he’s some cheesy movie villain spewing exposition to our clueless heroes that will change their lives forever. Only that’s not true. This can’t be true. It’s all just pretend and he has no idea what he’s talking about. Right?
“Or maybe I just didn’t like you because you didn’t treat her the way she deserves to be treated.”
“Come oooon, man”
His voice is aggravating, like nails on a chalkboard. Like a blaring fire alarm.
“No, you come on. Remember when she had that poetry reading. The one she’d been working and practicing on for months. The one where she won an award? You weren’t there. I was. Because it was important to her. Because I was proud of her. She’s the most creative, brilliant person I know. So I’ll be there whenever she needs me to be. Because she deserves that.”
It’s like her body moves on autopilot when she leans over and places a soft kiss on his cheek. Really she wants to kiss his lips but maybe that would be overkill. And maybe that’s not how she wants it to be. No like this. In a moment of misplaced emotion. Not again.
“Okay man, I give you that. I should’ve been there. You’re right. Still, I wonder what brought this on now? What made you guys realize?”
“He sends me pictures of every dog that comes into the bookstore because he knows they make me smile.”
“Every time she finds a copy of my book she buys it.”
They speak simultaneously and for a second this room full of people feels like it’s only the two of them. Like time stops and all noise is sucked from the room and all that can be heard is the beating of their hearts.
“Well, that’s cute. Good for you guys. Seems like you’re on the same page. Glad you finally figured it out and hey, it seems like you’re happy.”
“We are,” (Y/N) agrees, locking eyes with Jess.
“Yeah, we are”.
“Aww you guys,” a voice cut through the moment. What is it with these people and their constant interruptions?
Lexi crosses the room and drops down on Riley’s lap, her finger pointing at the ceiling right above Jess and (Y/N).
And sure enough there it is, green and white with a sparkling red bow dangling above their heads like it’s mocking them. Like it says “how far are you willing to take this huh? This play pretend? This lie? Are you willing to break your own heart in order to keep up this charade?”
“You guys,” Lexi nagged, unaware of the tension. Unaware of the fluttering inside (Y/N)’s chest. Unaware of the fact that it’s so much more than a lie. So much more that it will never be. “It’s a mistletoe. You gotta kiss.”
She turns to look at Jess, almost getting lost in his gorgeous brown eyes. She’s wanted this. For so long. Ever since she was a teenager but for just as long, Jess had made it clear that a friend was all she was ever gonna be. So maybe this is her only chance. Maybe this is it.
“Kiss me,” she whispers softly and shrugs her shoulders trying to seem casual. Like this doesn’t break and reassemble her heart all at once.
And he does. He kisses her. Softly touches her lips with his, holds onto the side of her face with a gentle touch. And time stands still and spreads up and nothing makes sense only everything does. He tastes like champagne and nostalgia and love. And it’s so hard to let go and pull away but her heart can’t take much more. It’s about to burst right out of her chest.
Jess softly pulls away before going in for another sweet peck. It’s short. Barely there. It’s a whisper of a kiss. But it’s there and it’s too much.
“I uh — I gotta pee. I’ll be right back”.
Only she doesn’t move towards the bathroom; instead, she finds herself on the patio, looking out towards the trees and hedges covered in thousands and thousands of sparkling fairy lights. This looks like the scene from a movie only the tears of frustration piling at her waterline giving away that this is in fact real life.
The cold winter air whips harshly against her skin and yet it feels less cold than the knowledge that the boy you want, the one you’ve always wanted, will never be yours. He’ll never want you back.
“Please don’t ever leave me alone with Riley, he’s such an — hey are you okay?”
He’s so casual. Why is he so casual? Does this mean nothing? It means nothing. It’s a lie, (Y/N). It’s just a lie!
“I didn’t want it to be like this,” she confesses, as the tears pearl down her cheeks, “ I can’t do this anymore. I can’t do it again. Not after last time.”
“What are you talking about?”
“The kiss, Jess! After that opening night at Truncheon when you kissed me after Rory screwed you over. I promised that the next time I’d kiss you it would mean something. But it doesn’t, not to you. Does it?  It’s just a lie.”
For a moment he just stands there, looks at her with an unreadable expression. There’s just them and the night and the lights and the stars.
And then he smiles. It’s a tiny smile, but it’s a Jess smile so it means everything.
“You think that kiss meant nothing to me? I’ve thought about nothing else but you since that night. I’m sorry I kissed you then but not because of the kiss. I’m sorry about making you feel like I just kissed you because you were there. That’s not it. I only realized that night when you showed up. You always showed up when I needed you. Still do”
“It’s what friends do.”
“No one ever did that for me. Not my friends. For a long time, not even my family. Only you,” he exclaims and nervously combs his fingers through his hair. “Earlier today I sent the guys the first draft of my new book.”
“You’re writing a new book?”
“I’ve thought about nothing but you since that night. So much that I wrote a book about how I felt. I wrote this book for you. It’s yours. I’m yours. And I know this sounds so fucking cheesy, saying this out loud gives me the heebie-jeebies. But I need you to know. None of what I said was fake or pretend. I’m in love with you, Goose. And maybe — maybe  Riley was right. Maybe I’ve always been.”
Snow falls softly around them as some horrible indie rendition of Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas sounds from inside, a few people drunkenly singing along. The wind nips at her nose, her cheeks. Her fingers are numb and her toes are but icicles by now. But it doesn’t matter. None of it does.
All that matters is the way he cradles her face in his hand, the way his heart beats in time with hers, and the way his lips feel as they meet hers in a passionate kiss.
And this one, this one means everything. It’s real and it’s true and it’s perfect.
“I’m in love with you too, Maverick. I’ve always been. But then there was Rory and I thought —“
“I was scared of losing you. Back then I fucked everything up and I couldn’t risk fucking up with you. Rory is always gonna be a part of my past, being with her helped me grow but you — that’s different. I need you. Always did, always will. And now I’m at least a little less fucked up and a little more deserving of you.”
“Oh Jess, you silly boy. You were always enough. “
“You wanna get out of here”
“Fuck yeah, please.”

As the snow falls outside and (Y/N) is cuddled into Jess’ side, a big mug of hot cocoa clasped tightly in her hand, warming her up, she thinks it’s better than any dream.
This is her reality now. No fake story. Not pretending. No dream.
This is her life now and yeah, it feels quite magical.
