Comic Analysis: Toxic and Healthy Relationships, Part 2 - Green Lantern
Hello, faithful readers! Well, it’s certainly been a while since I last made an analytical post. As you may recall, I made a previous analysis delving into Moon Knight’s two most well-known love interests, where I hinted at another post analyzing relationships. Well, after watching two different animated Wonder Woman films with a friend the other day, said friend sent me an article analyzing Wonder Woman, where Green Lantern/Hal Jordan - who also so happens to be my favorite GL - was mentioned in passing.
That reminded me of my desire/need to write a post detailing the toxicity of Hal’s longest running romance (as well as his driest), and the healthiness of, quite possibly, his most overlooked romance. Once more, I do not have a diehard’s knowledge of the OG comics, nor the experience of reading them firsthand. I do, however, have my own opinions and thoughts on what I’ve read/watched/researched. So, please take this post as that: my personal take on Hal Jordan’s romantic life, which you are free to accept or reject.
Now, without further ado, let’s get into the thick of it.
The Toxic Relationship with Carol Ferris
Tumblr media
Carol Ferris, for those not in the know, is the owner of Ferris Aircraft in the DC Universe. Taking over her father’s company, Carol was, arguably, one of the few women to head her own company, even if it was handed down from her beloved father. Because she was in charge of her father’s company, Carol was often curt, to the point, and business-like, rarely being more open than necessary. Despite this, she struck up an odd, rocky relationship with one of her employees - an excellent pilot by the name of Hal Jordan. However, while they were enamored by each other, it was for the wrong reasons.
Now, to understand why this relationship is toxic, I need to explain a bit about Hal and Carol as people. To begin with, Hal is the self-assured pilot; he’s the best of the best, adventurous, daring, and selfless. However, Hal’s most notable trait is his love of flying. The man cannot get enough of it, as his backstory shows in heartbreaking detail how the sky called to him and his father, Martin Jordan. This shared interest brought Hal and Martin together in a way that the rest of their family couldn’t understand, and so when Martin died in a test accident, Hal was left completely alone. Driven by a need to learn who his father had been, Hal desperately grabbed anything relating to the air, causing a severe rift between him, his older brother, and his mother, who was terrified of losing her son as she had his father.
The reason I bring up this part of Hal’s backstory, readers, is because it offers an insight to his personal life and secret wish. For, despite being freed from the chains of the earth, Hal is always looking for someone who he can come back to, who will be a stable and loving tether in an otherwise hectic and pained life. And so Hal, acting on that subconscious need - as well as a childhood crush - pursued Carol. After having such a tumultuous life from at least the age of ten, Hal was searching for a sense of stability. He needs someone who he could rely on and know would be there for him, and he thought Carol could provide that.
Carol, despite her contentment in owning Ferris Aircraft, felt bound by the desk and paperwork she dealt with twenty-four/seven. She longed for a release from the dull, monotonous routine she inherited, although she wouldn’t let it go for love of her father. But seeing Hal Jordan/Green Lantern’s complete and utter freedom attracted Carol more than anything. Carol craved that same liberty of worry and boredom, desiring a life of excitement over remaining trapped inside an office day in and day out. And so, falling for the freedom he offered, Carol chased the dream she wanted to live.
Needless to say, this is not a healthy relationship. It’s more of an infatuation than anything else. There are two additional facets to their romance that makes it unattainable, although I will share some pieces from the original comics before I expand upon that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, it’s not explicitly stated here, but for any big company/celebrity from 1900 on up until at least the 80s, marrying someone of a more blue-collar background was considered...unseemly, shall we say. Marrying, or even dating, someone such as a secretary or employee when you were - oh I don’t know, a billionaire or CEO - was seen as lowering yourself to a standard below what you were raised to/worked to get above. And since Hal was literally Carol’s employee, not only would that have been an affront to possible investors and an insult to her family, but Carol would have also been accused of favoritism, while Hal likely would have suffered extreme ridicule for daring to chase someone of a "higher” walk of life.
In essence, Hal and Carol fell in love not with each other, but with the idea that the other represented.
The Healthy Relationship with Kari Limbo
Tumblr media
Now, Kari is a lesser-known love interest of Hal’s from his infamous run with Green Arrow from the early 70s. A psychic Romani woman, Kari had previously dated Guy Gardner (yes, you read that correctly, but believe it or not, Guy wasn’t always a pill. That came later, and I’d rather not get into the muddiness of that particular sliver of trivia.) After Hal met with Kari to inform her of Guy’s apparent death, the two spent time together before falling in love. Kari loved him so much, in fact, that she accompanied not only Green Lantern on his adventures, but also Green Arrow and Black Canary. Heck, she even got to be on nigh sisterly terms with Black Canary, casually calling the superheroine Dinah when the ladies’ men were away on some mission.
Kari is shown to be a patient and understanding woman. She is supportive of Hal, encourages him in his moments of uncertainty, and remains with him through many stories. Kari never abandons Hal, instead choosing to be present for him and help him through whatever is troubling him. She loves Hal for his sacrificing nature, his strength of character, and his protective concern for her. In a way, I believe Hal gives Kari a sense of belonging; I do not recall if we ever saw people from her past, but Hal allows her to feel at home with him. He provides her with the necessary qualities to begin a shared life with him, something she longs for - just as Hal longs for a woman who he can come back to every day. Hal and Kari have the same goals for eternal love and companionship, and that is why, near the end of the run, Kari proposes marriage to Hal (hot dog, Hal, you were moving too slow for her!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Unfortunately, comic writers feel compelled to keep their heroes single, and so Hal and Kari’s wedding was cut short. It’s truly a shame, as Hal deserves to get married and live a happy life, just as Kari deserves to be a loving wife to him. I dearly wish she and Hal were together in the modern day, as their dynamic borders a fairytale romance in its beauty. They are truly underrated, and I believe they should be married, especially since the writers of today focus on the stale and toxic relationship with Carol.
Well, I believe I’ve said my piece on the matter. I don’t know if there will be a third installment to this series of mine. Perhaps there will be, but it will have to be one riveting romance to catch my attention. Then again, I can feel the gears in my head turning...
Farewell, fellow Lanterns! I hope you enjoyed my article!

HalAlan for the Headcanons meme! SFW 1, 3, and 9
Dating headcanon
I think their relationship starts off as mostly sex at first, so neither of them is really willing to admit that they are dating until they've been fucking for at least a year and a half. Hal probably says it first and Alan is weirdly indignant, some say it's still a mystery as to whether they're dating even now.
Arguments headcanon
Daily. Alan is very... (trying to think of a way to describe Alan's Alanness that doesn't make it sound terrible) particular about the way he likes things to be and Hal enjoys grating at his last nerve. Hal probably attempting to piss him off to get hate sex actually, but this is the SFW section of this meme.
How friends/family of the couple react
Twins aren't interesting lets focus on the Lanterns. Guy spends the next six months attempting to get into Alan's pants as revenge for Kari Limbo, John gives Hal his work number so he can call if Alan ever tries to murder him (very likely), Kyle angsts about being replaced for an entire issue written by Ron Marz which I consider the worst reading experience of my life.
Headcanons meme

i thought rottmnt already had a system for ghosts like for kari and stuff?? does your ghostlee au use a different way ghosts work or is it somthing mystic related?
Yes I did think about that
I was gonna explain it in the fic but I guess I can talk about it now
Spoilers under the cut!
When a witch/mystic user dies there is a rare phenomenon that causes their magic to separate from their soul, but it is a very rare occurrence so there's not alot documented on it.
All souls go to Limbo, though for the Hamato Clan's case they are able to be summoned to the over world.
When Leo died, the rare mystic thing happened to Leo. But instead of his mystic energy just floating around somewhere, it got confused with the whole 'Hamato Clan can turn I to ghosts' thing and caused the mystic energy to turn into his ghost, while the real Leo is trapped in Limbo.
So that's how GhostLee was born! Hope this makes sense

Zero Hour (1994) #1
Decided to read a DC event that happened right around the corner of my own birth, just to read something different I guess. There's a gimmick of the core event issues being counted backwards, so keep in mind this issue has ShOcKiNg ReVeLaTiOnS instead of being a set-up.
Before this issue you're supposed to read Guy Gardner: Warrior #24. I had no idea what was happening like 60% of the time (in terms of lore and background for that book in particular) but I liked the idea of Guy having a fortune teller girlfriend (this was the first time I encountered that character btw) only to find out that the time-space continuum rift chronal blast or whatever goofy name the event uses at the end of that issue meant that she died. I ran towards the wiki to confirm it: Kari Limbo does die in this issue.
...and Zero Hour #1 rubs salt in the wound:
Tumblr media
But let's go for the shocking revelation - that wasn't really that shocking for me because I was spoiled through cultural osmosis beforehand: Hal Jordan is behind the big bad™. I can't take it seriously to be quite honest. This is basically the Naruto finale plot twist decades before it happened.
Tumblr media
This, however, is satisfying. If only it was permanent....
Tumblr media
And finally: wow a comic book event where reality gets rewritten!
Tumblr media
Never seen before!!! If I'm motivated I might leave my thoughts once I read the other filler issues and Zero Hour #0 but I don't promise anything I just really wanted to share my Naruto joke and my grievance over Kari

Kari, what if in another endings episode 3... what if Ex-Aid referenced plant vs. zombies... and people actually threw leaves at the Zombies and it worked and destroyed the zombies...
how many more bugster virus related disappearances would have been returned???
I- I'm not sure? If I remember this correctly, most of the Bugster Virus patients that "disappeared" and are still yet to be cured are kinda in a limbo state within Proto-Gashats associated with the Bugsters created from them. So the dilemma is restoring them from those Proto-Gashats. Even if the zombies were defeated, in theory the only ones who'd be freed were the ones affected by that Gashat...
It's been a while since I watched the Ex-Aid Another Ending trilogy though so I could be wrong.

Chapter 33 - New Development - The Glitch
For a long time, I existed in a state of sensory deprivation. I could not see or hear anything, and only touch and smell remained to me. I had no memory of who I was or what had happened to me. I was barely able to move, but someone was caring for me. My body felt strange and unfamiliar, and for good reason. It was not the body I was born with.
I tried to explore my new form with my hands and feet, but they were not human either. I had no fingers or toes, only claws that drew blood when I pressed them too hard. My skin was covered with scales that felt cold and rough. I wondered if I had died and become some kind of demon. I lay still on the hard ground, hoping for a miracle or an explanation.
One day, someone lifted me up and carried me somewhere. I sensed that it was most likely a dragon, probably like me. It placed me on a soft surface that felt like a pillow. I relaxed and fell asleep again, not knowing how long I would remain in this limbo.
When I woke up, nothing had changed. I was still blind and deaf, trapped in a dragon’s body. It was a terrible feeling, not knowing anything about myself or my surroundings. I tried to speak, but my mouth and tongue were different too. The words came out as garbled noises that I could not hear. I said “What?” “I can’t see.” “Where am I?” But no one answered me, or if they did, I could not hear them.
Days passed by, and I did not need to eat, drink, or do anything else. I just waited, bored and frustrated by my disability, while they occasionally moved me from one place to another. I was completely dependent on whoever was taking care of me. They were gentle and patient with me. Sometimes they tried to make me walk on my four legs, which was difficult and awkward. Once, they threw me into the air, and I felt the wind rushing past me as I fell. Out of fear, I opened my wings and flew blindly until I crashed into someone. They caught me and put me back on the ground, letting me stand on my own.
This routine continued for some time, until one day I noticed a faint sound and a blurry shape in front of me. It was the first sign of improvement in my condition. Gradually, my vision and hearing became clearer, and I could make out the faces and voices of the dragons around me. Also, my memories came back. I tried to speak again, but my words were still distorted by my unfamiliar tongue and vocal cords. I practiced by talking to myself with simple words, but no one helped me learn to speak again. Slowly but surely, I initially regained my senses but not my original identity.
I could hardly recognize myself. I had shapeshifted into a creature I never wanted to be. My memory was unreliable, my senses were heightened, and my identity was shattered. I realized I was surrounded by female dragons who had taken care of me. I begged them for a mirror or anything that could reflect my new form. They obliged and led me to a polished surface. I gasped at what I saw: a young dragon with light blue and matte black scales and strange markings. I was not fully grown, but I was already monstrous. I hated being a dragon. It made me feel savage and unnatural. I was still human in my soul, and I loathed every moment of this cursed existence.
I asked them if I could see Kari or the queen again. They told me they were in the same palace as us and I could visit them anytime, or at least Freya. Kari didn't live in the palace. I asked them to guide me there, afraid of getting lost in the unfamiliar corridors. They agreed and escorted me to a point where they instructed me to go straight, then turn right, then left, where I would find the main room where I had met the queen before. Then they left me, as if they were suddenly nervous to be near me. I thanked them politely, hiding the anger that boiled inside me for all the inexplicable and unjust things that had happened to me.
As I followed their directions, I heard a familiar voice in my head that made me smile. It was Akira, my soothsayer friend. She said hesitantly, “Errrhm...” and paused. I said quickly, “Don’t worry, it’s still me. Raphael.” I made sure no one was around to hear me talking to thin air. She asked incredulously, “Raphael? What happened to you? Are you wearing some kind of dragon costume?” I wished she was right. I said sadly, “No, Akira. I think I’m a dragon now.” She gasped and said excitedly, “Wow, really? I want to see you. But first, listen: we've got your messengers. Cyrus and Sol are on their way to you. They’ll be there soon.” She sounded a bit scared as she said that. While she spoke, I stopped by another mirror in the hallway and showed her my reflection. I looked like a smaller version of Zeno. The fallen Zeno. I said anxiously, “How soon? Will they even recognize me? Do you know how to change me back?” She said curiously, “Why would you want to change back? You look more like us now.” I said desperately, “But I’m not one of you, Akira! Please help me!” She said sadly, “I’m sorry, Raphael. I don’t know what to do.” I felt hopeless. Neither did I. I asked her for some comfort. “Was this supposed to happen? Did you see this in your visions?” She said confidently, “Yes, it was.” I felt angry and asked her, “Why didn’t you warn me? I hate this!” She hesitated and then said softly, “I couldn’t tell you. Forgive me.” I wanted to argue, but I knew she was bound by the rules of the guardians. So I said instead, “It’s okay. Can you do me a favor, though?” She said cautiously, “Maybe. What is it?” I said, “Can you tell Cyrus and Sol about this?” She said quickly, “No, I can’t. This is already too risky for me to talk to you like this. Actually, can you do me a favor? Don’t tell anyone about our vision connection, please.” She sounded sorrowful and scared. I said sympathetically, “Okay, Akira. Don’t worry. Thank you for everything.” She didn’t answer. It was as if she had vanished from my mind. I left the mirror behind and headed for the queen’s room.
Before entering, I peeked through the door and saw her sitting on the throne. I cleared my throat and asked for permission: “May I, Raphael, speak with your majesty, Queen Freya?” She answered with a cold voice, “Of course, Raphael. It’s not like we haven’t seen each other in ages.” I stepped into the room and bowed to her. “Thank you for helping me get through this. I really appreciate it,” I said sincerely. She looked at me with a distant expression. “You’re welcome,” she said flatly.
I gathered my courage and asked, “What happened to me? I still feel strange. And how did you recognize me as Raphael?” She sighed and said, “One question at a time, please. First of all, Kira brought you here while you were dissolving into white smoke. Fortunately for you, we are wind dragons, and we could keep you together until you regained your form.” I nodded and said, “I see. Thank you for the explanation. And for saving me.” She waved her hand and said, “Don’t mention it. Now, to answer your second question: You came back to life in a new form, but I recognized you with my own eyes. You have grown a lot in these few days. You are the first shapeshifter I have ever seen who can actually grow.” I interrupted her by accident and said, “Shapeshifter? Does that mean I can return to my original form?” She shrugged and said, “Maybe, but I don’t know for sure. I’m not a shapeshifter myself, so you’ll have to figure that out on your own. Anyway, thank you for fixing the supply of health crystals and saving Kari’s tail. He told me about that.” I smiled and felt a bit proud of myself. “Oh, right. You’re welcome. I’m glad I could help.”
As I said that, I noticed a picture behind her on the wall. It was a painting of a small dragon that looked like me, but younger and cuter. I didn’t see it the first time I was here, so I asked her curiously, “Excuse me, who is that in the picture behind you?” She chuckled and said, “You’ve changed so much in such a short time. That’s you.” I gasped and said, “Really? How adorable. Why did you paint me?” She said, “I didn’t paint you. Someone else did. I asked them to do it because I had never seen a little shadow dragon like you before. And you were so still and quiet that it was easy to capture your likeness.” I said, “How sweet of you! Now you’ll have a memory of me forever. What an honor.” She looked at me and then at the picture with a wistful expression. “Yes, what an honor,” she said softly. She suddenly sounded like a lover.
I felt uncomfortable and wanted to leave. Maybe I could talk to Kari again. He was more friendly and less intimidating than the queen. I said awkwardly, “Ehm, if you don’t mind, I’m going to see Kari now. And then I suppose I’ll resume my previous task, right?” She nodded and said, “Sure, sure, sure... Just remember that you’re always welcome here if you need anything or want to thank your caretakers again. We'll appreciate it.” I thanked her again and said, “I will, thank you, Queen Freya.” She frowned and said, “Oh, please, just call me Freya, Raphael.” She repeated that with the same weird tone.
I was scared of that tone. What if she really fell in love with me for some unknown reason? I didn’t feel anything for any dragons. And what if I rejected her? Would she punish me for refusing the queen in her own kingdom? These thoughts haunted me as I tried to fly with my new pair of wings. They were still feathery like before, but dark like my body and much larger. Flying was different now that I was heavier and bigger, but their size matched my new condition, and everything was fine.

{C.O.F} ~ GoldVeemon's {GoldVmon} Profile
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Since I didn't have an animated icon for the V-mon recolors, the gold V-mon icon coloring was done by me, {originally also with blue eyes, but DemiGoldV's icon came second and was used much more frequently around the site to indicate eye color was Green} the other blinking one was made by my friend Kari Avalon AND SHOULD NOT BE USED Under ANY Circumstances.) (DO NOT Copy) (DO NOT re-post) {DO NOT Lift+Use this O.C. Concept under ANY Circumstances} (Trust Me, I WILL Know)
GoldV was originally planned to evolve into Goldveedramon, an existing 'Mon, hence the name. The name for Baby stage was more like a place-holder based on 'Chibomon' until I could come up with something better, but it's basically also a gold Chibomon recolor with the same (originally) emerald green eyes. (Story spoiler under 'read more')
At the end of the first arc, GoldV got "killed" {Deleted Permanently} by a certain character, triggering Hikaru's Crest so SilV could evolve, but in reality, GoldV may have gotten caught up in another "situation"...
GoldV was eventually planned to turn up again in a storyline involving my O.C. Shane, but I was never able to reach that part of the story (back then). Maybe GoldV was floating in the same "limbo" as Shane was this WHOLE Time...?? ? ?

GREEN LANTERN CORPS #207 DECEMBER 1986 BY STEVE ENGLEHART, JOE STATON, MARK FARMER, ANTHONY TOLLIN AND BRUCE D. PATTERSON
Tumblr media
Guy Gardner returns to Earth, saying that the old-timer put him in charge. It doesn’t go well.
Tumblr media
SCORE: 7
This is a “Legends” tie-in. There is nothing about “Legends” in this issue, but... Guy Gardner finally comes back to Earth, and since he is going to be part of those “big” titles coming out of Legends, then, I can see why it is related.
Still, if you are not interested in Guy Gardner or the Green Lanterns, you can skip the tie-in.
About the art... Arisia “grew up” all of a sudden, but I can barely tell the difference. My guess is that the main reason she “had to” grow up, was because it looked bad for Hal to be dating her. Even some of the GLC members are concerned by this age difference (and the fact that she was a girl, just a few days ago).
Spoilers after the break...
Tumblr media
So Kari Limbo intervenes for Guy Gardner. I still don’t know what happened to this character and why I don’t remember her ever going back to him. Especially after Guy met Tora.
But perhaps the oddest thing about the issue was Hal’s decision and Appa’s answer, to the idea of letting Guy on Earth... as a Green Lantern. I would have expected them to leave him be, without a ring. I guess it could have brought up more problems.
I am also still not sure how being brain-damaged would change a personality so much. At least, in this way. But some things are intact, like, Guy was never an intellectual. And that didn’t change.
About Hal and Arisia. I am not a fan of this relationship, but it makes a lot of sense. However, it mostly makes sense in this context where more than one Lantern can work on the same sector. Otherwise, Hal’s life is very lonely.
