Happy #WorldSeaTurtleDay!! Each one of these 7 amazing species of sea turtles are at risk for being gone from this planet forever. #Loggerhead, #leatherback and #oliveridley are vulnerable, #hawksbill and #kempsridley are critically endangered and #Green and #flatback are all endangered. All of these sea turtles are facing a variety of causes that is affecting their population numbers. They are: bycatch, climate change, human impacts/consumption, among others. . Bycatch is a result of anything caught in a net or cage besides what is being fished. Say for example, shrimp. Sometimes fisherman use a net and drag it across the sea floor. They catch the shrimp but other species a well including fish, sharks, dolphins and sea turtles. They have nowhere else to go when they get tangled in the nets and usually drown. For crabs, TED cages have been introduced to help the sea turtles escape if they are caught in the TED cage. . Climate change is another factor being the sex of the turtles is determined by the temperature of the sand as their eggs incubate. Warm temps produce females and cold temps produce males. As the temperature warms, nest are starting to produce mainly females which isn’t good for the reproduction of the species as time passes. Only 1 in 1,000 babies make it to adulthood to reproduce. Even the mad run from their nest to the ocean they run the risk of being picked up by a seagull or crab. . Human consumption is also a risk. There are parts of the world that still eat the sea turtle eggs and their shells are used to make everything from eyeglass frames to hair clips-especially the hawksbill turtle. . So what can you do to help these amazing creatures out? First, take your trash with you and don’t leave it on the beach. When trash is left and also when you dig in the sand and leave the hole unfilled, it becomes hard for the sea turtle to nest and also poses a risk for the turtle as well as humans to fall in the unfilled hole and risk injury. So today is world turtle day, and these pics are from the time I was called on by FWC to transport a sick Kemp’s-Ridley sea turtle to the animal hospital. She was collected late at night so - after getting instructions from FWC - we had a little sleepover before we made the 2 hour drive the next morning. This poor gal ended up being treated for red tide. It was amazing being able to help the most endangered species of sea turtle in the whole world, and I wish more people could experience it. If you want to get involved, please do! one time in kindergarten we had a christmas party and we were playing this game where we had to put a paper star on a tree while we were blindfolded. and the principal was in the room for the christmas party, and i put the star on his face by accident ?? and he thought it was funny bUT I WAS REALLY UPSET THAT I DIDNT PUT IT ON THE TREE

Meet the world's most endangered sea turtle: The Kemp's Ridley Sea Turtle Lepidochelys kempii. These turtles are listed as Critically Endangered, mainly because of the harvest of their eggs over the past century. Even though these incredible ocean animals are now protected on the beaches they visit to nest, and fishermen are taking measures to limit the bycatch of these turtles in fishing gears, Kemp's Ridley sea turtles have not yet recovered. Found primarily in the Gulf of Mexico, but also as far north as Nova Scotia, Kemp’s ridleys are among the smallest sea turtles, reaching only about 2 feet in shell length and weighing up to 100 pounds. Their upper shell, or carapace, is a greenish-grey color, and their bellies are off-white to yellowish. They prefer shallow waters, where they dive to the bottom to feed on crabs, which are their favorite food, and other shellfish. They also eat jellyfish, and occasionally munch on seaweed and sargassum. They may live to be 50 years old.
