Things people have said about Zhuge Liang: "The Prime Minister's calculations are divine and incomprehensible." "O Governor, you are the sport of one of Zhuge Liang's wiles." 'Sima Yi felt sad at having been tricked. "Zhuge Liang is a cleverer man than I am," said he with a sigh of resignation.' "Zhuge Liang's vile tricks are innumerable." '"The man appears like a god and disappears like a demon. He is too much for me," sighed Sima Yi.' '"His comings and goings are not human," said Sima Yi sadly.' '"While he lived, I could guess what he would do; dead, I was helpless!" said Sima Yi.' 'The people had a saying that "A dead Zhuge Liang can scare off a live Sima Yi".'

The roiling, restless fog is like chaos before a storm, swirling streaks resembling wintry clouds. Serpents lurking there can spread its pestilence, and evil spirits can havoc wreak, sending pain and woe to the world of men, and the storms of wind and sand that plague the border wastes. Common souls meeting it fall dead. Great men observe it and despair. Are we returning to the primal state that preceded form itself — to undivided Heaven and earth?

for whatever reason i’m losing my mind over the claim that nurhaci aka emperor taizu of qing learned everything he knew about chinese military and political strategies from reading romance of the three kingdoms and water margin. maybe if i spent a little less time kicking my legs in the air while reading those books and a little more time seriously underlining passages in glitter gel pen then i too could found a dynasty

Some classic Asian literature I own:
Monkey: The Journey to the West by Wu Ch'eng-en, translated by Arthur Waley. The Romance of the Three Kingdoms by Luo Guanzhong, translated by Martin Palmer. Rashomon and Seventeen Other Stories by Ryunosuke Akutagawa, translated by Jay Rubin.
Rashomon and Seventeen Other Stories summary:
A collection of exuberant, imaginitive and sometimes wierd short stories by a man who's work continues to influence modern day authors.
Some lovely quotes from Rashomon and Seventeen Other Stories:
“I don't have the strength to keep writing this. To go on living with this feeling is painful beyond description. Isn't there someone kind enough to strangle me in my sleep?” “I have no conscience at all -- least of all an artistic conscience. All I have is nerves.” “Yes -- or rather, it's not so much that I want to die as that I'm tired of living.” “Truly human life is as evanescent as the morning dew or a flash of lightning.” “In a word, tears like this light a modest lamp of human love amid the gathering dusk of human suffering.”
I made another two similar posts, one for Monkey: The Journey to the West and one for The Romance of The Three Kingdoms.
