BHOC: MARVEL TWO-IN-ONE #49
MARVEL TWO-IN-ONE #49 was another junky, lifeless issue of what had become a largely junky, lifeless series. There was improvement just around the corner, though, and while I didn’t know that at the time, my critical standards at the age of twelve were pretty meager. I liked the Thing and the Fantastic Four, and so I bought the book without fail every month, simple as that. And every once in a…

Clobberin’ Time #1 by Steve Skroce. Variant covers by Greg Smallwood and Dan Jurgens. Out in March 2023.
“It's the most clobber-filled title in the Marvel line, brought to you by the talented Steve Skroce, as Ben Grimm teams up with heroes from across the Marvel Universe! It's the Thing's greatest adventure yet, with or without the Fantastic Four. In this issue, the Hulk and Ben are stranded on a distant, ancient, alien world, where the duo must protect an ancient people against legions of Deviant hordes and ultimately face the wrath of a Celestial.”

Marvel Two-in-One #48
Good fun.
"Marvel's newest super-hero sensation battles for his life against a fighting mad Ben Grimm!"
There's lots to enjoy here. The villain has two solid goals, and they both more than justify his actions thus far. The events here are nicely tied back to what's been happening with Jack Hart in other comics. And the Yancy Streeters play a big part in the story, which is refreshing. Re-reading this two-parter was a blast.
On Sale Date: October 31, 1978.

BHOC: MARVEL TWO-IN-ONE #44
I was continuing to buy MARVEL TWO-IN-ONE every month due to my love for the Thing as a character, but there was no way of avoiding the feeling that the series was at something of a nadir. With the departure of writer/editor Marv Wolfman, a rotating team of creators had ben crafting stories that weren’t especially polished, nor of any real consequence. Partly, this was due to the series being…
