#OTD in 1919 – Harry Boland and Michael Collins engineer Éamon de Valera’s escape from Lincoln Jail in England. He is dressed as a woman.
The façade of Lincoln Prison is an intimidating welcome for anyone entering the facility. Since its opening in 1872, few have escaped and those who have were often quickly re-apprehended. That is, except for the case of Éamon de Valera, the Irish dissident and future president of Ireland, who managed to escape to freedom in 1919 in a famous incident which briefly brought the Irish revolution to…

idk if my supervisors realise what kind of power struggle they're engaging in when they critique my inclusion of an argument from another author because "[first name] wouldn't have written that" when they in fact did write that

Question: do you follow any other sports in general? What are they?
Hi nonnie! Sports other than hockey, hmmm… honestly not really.
I have a March Madness Bracket rn for College Basketball (currently ranked 14th out of 18 in my group so obvi killing it), but the squeaky shoes have a tendency to hurt my head so I don’t really watch just kind pick teams for the vibes/my siblings/cousins’ colleges.
I’ve been to a bunch of professional baseball games. They’re not bad in person, but on tv I think they’re a bit too slow to enjoy so I don’t really follow it. My extended family and my brothers are actually spilt 50/50 Mets and Yankees so I’ve been to a lot of both.
I like soccer. I actually played as a kid. I also don’t really follow a team but I’ll watch when my brothers put it on. They like Liverpool. Definitely rooted for US men’s and women’s tho.
And I like the Olympics. Pretty much every sport with ice, snow, or water plus gymnastics and I root for the US.
I watch One (1) football game a year and that’s the Iron Bowl where I root for Auburn. War Eagle 🦅
TLDR: pretty much just hockey

@ Gretchen Weiners ask at the end of the day literally every single word was the result of someone pushing some term to the point of it being accepted by the general community. Words don't just appear out of thin air, they always come from someone who uses them so much that the people around think "you know what? I'm going to start using that too" and suddenly we have a new word
well... yes, but that obviously doesn't happen with every new proposal. there are complicated social structures and mechanisms that have to align for a word to gain wide traction. there's a nice overview of this in nevalainen & raumolin-brumberg's chapter "historical sociolinguistics: origins, motivations, and paradigms" from the handbook of historical sociolinguistics (2012, hernández-campoy and conde-silvestre, eds.) where they also cite work by bill labov and leslie milroy.

Constance Markievicz was apprehended in Rathmines. Party Secretary, Darrell Figgis, who was seized at his home a…
