Break-Ups

Minato Namikaze was intrigued as he stood behind his bar cleaning glasses, subtly sneaking glances at the man that was sitting in one of the barstools.

Crystal blue eyes danced over mahogany wood until he got the courage to look up for what must've been the millionth time that night. The man had been sitting at the bar for hours now, lamenting over something with a glass of wine held in one of his dainty-looking hands, charcoal eyes trained on the opaque gold liquid. It was weird for people to order wine- usually, they ordered beer or some mixed drink- but Minato didn't mind. The man wasn't bad to look at, a mysterious scar over his left eye and messy silver hair. He'd been completely silent aside from when he'd given Minato his order.

Minato wasn't sure how old the guy was- old enough for him not to have to be I.D-ed, but not as old as the blonde, who was in his thirties. So, the silver-haired man was well into his adulthood, but not quite middle-aged. Minato would've guessed mid-twenties.

He wasn't usually the type to mind silence. He usually welcomed it, but there was no one in the bar aside from him and the mysterious man he'd never even seen or talked to before, the only noises occupying the room were the occasional swish of the wine that was in the man's glass and the occasional squeak or footstep from Minato walking around behind the bar and cleaning glasses, and it was beginning to drive him a little bit insane.

Plus, the man looked... Troubled. Lonely. For whatever reason, the blonde wanted to talk to him.

"You look like you're going through it," Minato started, and finally, they made eye contact, sky blue burning into granite. "You alright?"

"Break-up."

The answer was short, rough, but the man was looking at him expectantly- as if wanting him to continue or reply somehow, so he did.

"Oh... I understand."

"Do you?" The silver-haired man snapped, averting his gaze.

"I just got out of a long-term relationship a couple months ago," Minato explained and sat down the glass he had been cleaning, as well as the rag he'd been cleaning it with. "It's a long story."

"Can I hear it...?"

Oh.

Minato hadn't even talked about the break up with Kushina to anyone aside from a friend or two, and that was when it had first happened. Thinking about it filled him with a twinge of nervousness, but he tried his best to brush off the feeling in favor of leaning over the bar in front of the man so he could actually talk to him face to face.

"Sure," Minato offered a shrug and started to tell the story. "It wasn't a bad break up, per se. Her and I had been friends since high school, got together a few years back, but the relationship just wasn't progressing. I guess when I was growing up, being anything but straight wasn't acceptable, so I didn't really consider that I could identify as anything else until I did. I didn't realize I was gay until I realized that I couldn't even romantically love the best woman in the world."

"Oh," The dark-eyed man seemed to get what he was saying immediately, perking up. Minato couldn't tell if it was surprise, interest, or both. "That must've been rough. Did she react okay?"

"Yeah, surprisingly. She has a temper, but again, she's my best friend and she's always been pretty understanding of me... I told her as soon as I realized it, she suggested we end things, so we did. Things have been a bit awkward since then."

"I'd imagine."

"I mean, we still hang out all the time, but it's like we'll never get back the bond we had before. It's weird now... I guess time will fix it," Minato paused, and then looked at the man, who had bags under his eyes. His entire demeanor seemed exhausted... He was either overworked or emotionally wrecked and based on the fact that he'd mentioned a break up earlier, Minato assumed that it was possibly both. "Anyways, enough about me- you're looking pretty rough, so what exactly happened to you?"

"Just a bad relationship all around," The man sighed and ran a hand through his silvery locks, seeming frustrated at the mere thought of the relationship he was about to talk about. "Only lasted a few months, but we've known each other for years. It was stupid."

"Love tends to be that way."

"I don't know if I'd call it love," Minato blinked at that, staring up at the man, who set the wine glass down and leaned back in the barstool with crossed arms and a wistful smile. "Just tension."

"I see."

"We met in middle school and always hated each other back then, went to the same high school and college, too. Things boiled over towards the end of our senior year in college because we got paired together for a final project. We asked our professor to change the groups a million times to no avail, so we got stuck working together, and well... Our built-up tension boiled over and turned into something it shouldn't have."

"You hooked up?" The blonde asked though he was sure he already knew the answer to that.

"Yeah, and then it continued on to this weird, unspoken relationship. We acted like we hated each other like always out in public and then like we loved each other in private, both of us refused to put a label on it, and it was just really confusing to always be switching between loving and arguing. It felt like I didn't know what was real and what wasn't."

Oh. Unspoken, toxic friends with benefits gone wrong. It wasn't really uncommon- especially for college students, from Minato's understanding. He remembered hearing about drama like this all the time back when he was still in high school and college, but he'd finished with school completely a good seven or eight years ago.

"So you broke up with him?"

"Oh, no," The man laughed, tone bitter and eyes dark as he continued to explain the rest of the situation. Minato listened, interested in the man's story, and interested in... Other things. "I caught feelings, so it was too hard for me to do it. I asked what we were to get some closure and he got frustrated and broke it off, told me he needed some time to clear his head, but... It's been weeks, and since we finished that project and graduated a while ago, he doesn't have a reason to have to talk to me, so he's been avoiding me like the plague. I've seen him around with other guys, girls, whatever, and... I don't think he's going to clear his head and come talk things out, and I'm not willing to wait, but I think I'm only just now accepting that."

"So now you're here," Minato quirked an eyebrow, watching as the man downed the glass of wine in one swig and pushed it towards Minato along with enough cash to pay for it. The blonde assumed that he didn't want another one and took the money, as well as the glass. "What was the plan? To drink your sorrows away or hook up with someone?"

"Quite frankly, either would've worked, but it looks pretty desolate tonight..." That was true. He and Minato were the only two in there, but then again, it was three in the morning on a Tuesday.

"I wouldn't recommend it anyway," Minato shrugged and walked out from behind the bar, taking the seat next to the man and leaning a little bit close. The man didn't back away, and he wondered if this could possibly go somewhere. "People come in here and do that all the time, and it never ends well. It helps my business and all, but as nice as that is, it's sad to watch. The healthy thing to do would be to simply reflect on it and heal on your own instead of using sex and alcohol as an aid."

"Why do you sound so logical?" The man gave a half-hearted groan and uncrossed his arms.

"I like to think I'm logical sometimes," Minato shrugged, feeling his shoulder briefly brush against the much narrower one, which was bare due to the tank-top the man was wearing. "But I can speak from experience. I guess I had a couple hookups after ending my relationship with Kushina, just to explore a bit, but it didn't feel quite right since I hadn't talked with them much and didn't feel the chemistry there... It was just empty."

"Like this bar right now?" He tilted his head, quirking one of his silver brows upwards.

"Yes, like this bar right now," Minato laughed and looked off to the side, reflecting on just how desolate things really were. There was no music playing anymore, it was almost dark, no one else was there. The sun would probably rise in a couple of hours, and he was sure that he probably wouldn't get any sleep that night due to his work. "Most of the business comes from Kushina and her friends on weeknights like this since people usually don't go and get wasted on Tuesdays, but it seems like she's been avoiding this place- at least when I'm the one tending the bar, but that's pretty rare. So, she's still been coming often according to everyone else who works here, just not when I'm present."

"Awkward... But I was wondering, where is everyone else?" The man questioned, turning around and looking over the expanse of the empty bar with curious eyes. Minato thought he was attractive in that moment, charcoal orbs and inky lashes, kissable lips and a soft yet defined jawline. "There aren't even any other employees around. I wasn't sure you guys were actually open when I first walked in until you called me over here and asked what I wanted."

"It was pretty empty, so I sent everyone home for the night since there was no point in keeping them here without any customers," Minato explained. Most of his waiters and waitresses had other jobs, school, and/or family to focus on, so he wasn't going to make them stay if they didn't want to when the place was empty. "I was actually about to close up shop when you walked in."

"Oh, sorry about that."

"No worries," Minato grinned, and he was unable to miss the bright red that took over the other man's cheeks as a response. He briefly wondered how far he could go with this. "I'm glad you came."

"So... You own the place?"

"Yeah, a family friend owned it for a few decades and decided he was going to sell it," Minato thought back on Jiraiya, who'd decided to give up the bar in favor of retiring and traveling around the world. "I didn't want it to change since I had so many memories here, so I decided to buy it and run it the best I could."

"You like the job, then?"

"I love it... It gives me a break from what I do during the day," The man gave him an intrigued look, so he clarified. "I'm a teacher."

"Wait, really? I just graduated and got a degree so I could do that- I have a job interview in a few days," Oh. Minato felt his face flush. His district was actually looking for new teachers to teach at his school since a few had quit and there was a bit of a shortage... He wondered if this guy was a possible option. "Where do you teach at?"

"Konohagakure High, it's right up the street."

"That's where I'm trying to get a job at," The man stared down into his lap, fully flushed red from his forehead to his collarbones- unfortunately, anything below that was covered by his tank top. "Now I'm embarrassed that I told you so many personal things..."

"Don't be."

"You're..." The man trailed off, like he wanted to say something else, but stopped and collected himself before speaking again. "I don't know your name."

"Minato," The blonde introduced himself. "Can I ask for yours?"

"Kakashi."

Kakashi. It was a name he wanted to say more, and he wanted to hear Kakashi say his name, too. The sudden attraction that he had to this future teacher was odd and sudden, and he wasn't sure what to do about it, but he didn't want it to slip between his fingers, and he got the vibe that Kakashi returned the sentiment.

"Well, Kakashi," Kakashi leaned closer, looking at him rather expectantly, so Minato took a bit of a chance and rested a hand on the silver-haired man's lower thigh. "I'm wondering if you'd indulge me in something."

"Yeah, Minato?"

"Come home with me tonight," He whispered, earning a lopsided smirk from the younger man.

"What happened to that noble perspective of yours on hookups, huh?" Kakashi teased and crossed his arms again. Minato only gave an amused chuckle in response, relieved that the silver-haired man at least seemed a little bit interested.

"I meant hookups with people I have no chemistry with. That isn't the case here for me, but... The ball's in your court, Kakashi."

"Fuck it," With a smirk, Kakashi stood up and grabbed his hand, pulling him along. "Let's go."
