The Rising of the Shield Hero Saison 3 : Date de Sortie, Trailer, tout savoir
youtube

minami shimabara art workshop
Tumblr media
The first weekend of April right before the start of the new school year, I made a trip to Minami Shimabara on the Unzen Peninsula for an art workshop.
The Unzen peninsula is to the southeast of Omura, and consists of the towns of Unzen, Shimabara, Minami Shimabara, and Obama (yes, Obama). You can also find Mt. Unzen, a large active volcano of around 1400m. Unfortunately the volcano was not the target of this trip, but I will come back to explore its steamy goodness one of these days.
Tumblr media
The reason I did find myself in the Unzen Peninsula was actually far more interesting. A friend and fellow ALT in my town is an artist and has some experience in printmaking. There is an incredibly talented printmaking artist by the name of Toshihiko Ikeda who runs printmaking workshops at an art school in Minami Shimabara called Shirakino Art Village. My very talented artist friend happened to meet him at an exhibit, and was invited to his workshop in Minami Shimabara, and he was encouraged to invite friends to join as well. I was incredibly lucky to be one of those friends.
The Shirakino Art Village is located on a hill overlooking the sea, which gave a breathtaking beautiful view from the classrooms. It used to be an elementary school, but the school was closed in 2015, I’m guessing due to low population, but I don’t know for sure. According to the Art Village’s website, Minami Shimabara was the birthplace of copper plate printing in Japan, when it was brought to Nagasaki prefecture by Christian missionaries 400 years ago. Additionally, the famous sculptor Seibo Kitamura, who sculpted the famous Nagasaki Peace Statue, was a graduate from this school as well, which gives it quite a reputation. The first floor of the building features art galleries, including works from artists who submit their work to the school for printmaking competitions. The second floor includes living quarters for housing the artists that take up residence in the Art Village (Minami Shimabara is a very small town with limited lodging). Lastly, the third floor contains a fully equipped printmaking studio.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Plate printmaking, also known as intaglio, is the art of incising an image into a metal plate, applying ink, and pressing into paper under immense pressure. Only my artist friend has done it before, so it was a room of us complete beginners faced with the task of carving an image into a metal plate, dunking it into highly corrosive acid, and rolling it underneath 200 kg of pressure. Super easy right?
We began by each sketching an image onto a piece of paper of what we wanted to turn into a print. This was actually one of the hardest parts, as I am not an artist nor do I have many creative ideas. I decided in the end to draw a picture of my cat Gracie with some decorative flowers surrounding her. I tried my best to draw her by hand, but after several frustrated attempts, I just held the paper over my phone and traced a picture of her instead.
After our sketches were done, we traced the lines of the image through the paper onto a metal plate which had been prepped by our instructor with a black coating on it. The coating helped us better see the lines we were carving rather than carving onto the reflective metal surface.
Tracing the image through the paper left light marks on the black coating without scratching the plate itself. From there we used special tools to follow these lines and scratch the image into the plate.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In between etchings, we had to soak our plates in an acid bath (called biting) in order to make the engravings a bit deeper to hold the ink well. Mr. Ikeda told us to etch what we intended to be the darkest lines first, so that these holes would be deepest after several dips in the acid. I’m not an artist and wasn’t able to conceptualize which parts of my piece should be darker or lighter, so I decided to just trace the entire image on the first dunk. After that I added some smaller lighter details hoping that these would end up being lighter than the original outline and add some contrast.
Since the building was used exclusively as a printmaking school, there was an acid room specifically for biting. There was a tub of corrosive acid, a few sinks, and a much larger tub filled with dirty acid water for rinsing the acid off. Our teacher said that even though the acid was corrosive, it wouldn’t cause much damage to our skin if we only get a drop or two on us. He seemed pretty unconcerned about it and let us dip our plates in the acid unsupervised, though we still had to wear gloves and aprons when entering and using the acid room.
First, we laid the plates down in the tub of acid for about 10 minutes, then we transferred the plates to the larger water tub and wiggled them around in the water to get most of the acid off. Then we gave them an extra rinse in the sink. Usually after this you would apply another slightly acidic solution (I forgot why), but interestingly our teacher uses soy sauce instead of solution because of its slight acidity. He said that when he taught this workshop in the UK he got complaints about the soy sauce smell because it’s something only Japanese intaglio artists do, which I thought was really funny. After adding a bit of soy sauce to the surface of the plate, we again rinsed it under the faucet, dried it with a paper towel, and were good to continue carving again.
Tumblr media
Mr. Ikeda recommended biting about 4 times, so I added small details after each bite and soaked it four times total. After biting, we moved on to the printing process.
Just before applying ink, we had to remove the black coating on the plates. We used a strong solution (I think it was something like machine oil or alcohol) and cloths to wipe off the coating, which revealed a shiny copper plate with our designs etched on the surface.
Tumblr media
I accidentally scratched my plate while doing this because I wasn’t gentle enough, so my first print has an extra line down the middle of Gracie’s face. I asked Mr. Ikeda if he could fix it and he was able to fill in the scratch with his magic artist hands, so the second print I made didn’t have the same line.
After removing the black coating we applied ink to the entire plate with a brush. This allows the ink to seep evenly into all the incisions we made. After this we used mesh cloths to swipe the excess ink off of the plates until only the cracks were filled with ink and there was no ink remaining on the surface of the plate.
Tumblr media
Once the ink was applied, it was time to print. We laid our plates face up on the printing press and placed a piece of thick paper over it. Then we began to pull the press wheel, covering the plates with a cloth to protect the paper from slipping as it moved under the roller. According to Mr. Ikeda, the roller applies about 200 kg (440 lbs) of pressure on the plate, pushing the paper into it and leaving the inked image on the paper. After sending the plates through, we pulled back the cloth and picked up the paper to find a mirror image of the plate printed on the paper.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The paper we used was slightly moist in order to not tear while being sent through the machine, so we taped the paper to wooden boards to allow it to dry over about 2 days. With that, the printing process was done. We could make several copies using the plate, so we reapplied more ink and sent it through the machine again to make more prints. Our teacher taught us how to sign our work and add the printer’s proof (which we add after the paper has dried), and the finished product was done.
My friends also made some sick prints. Here’s some prints made by my friends:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’m incredibly grateful to my friend Sean for inviting me to this workshop, Mr. Ikeda for having us, and our CIR Ema for helping translate for us (though Mr. Ikeda had very good English as well). Here is a link to Toshihiko Ikeda’s Instagram if anyone would like to check out his art. He’s an incredible artist and has been featured in galleries in France.
Minami Shimabara is a very beautiful town and the art studio was so peaceful with its lovely view from the windows. I felt really refreshed after being there and was looking forward to returning again!
