You’re a human. You’re a bartender, which is a very normal job for a human to have, and when you walk down the winding streets of Akureyri you can blend seamlessly into any crowd of people which is, without question, only something that a human could do.

The fact that you came here two years ago with nothing but the clothing on your back doesn’t mean anything; you’re hardly northern Iceland’s first wayfaring soul. That you had no money to your name, no friends or family to speak of — that’s a fairly average human thing, too. And that little craving you have, that quiet urge to dig your teeth into any passing stranger’s throat? It's completely, entirely mundane.

Folksaga is inspired by The Edda, Norse mythology, andTwin Peaks, with a bit of tweaking to the myths as needed for the sake of plot. MC backgrounds have been adjusted to fit for all players regardless of gender identity, and creative liberty has been taken with some smaller points for a smoother storytelling experience. All changes will be explained in an FAQ post (too be added in the links below ASAP!)

AS OF AUGUST 21 UPDATE: The current demo consists of the prologue (introductory lore + character creation), + chapter 1, about 70k words total.

I expect it to be somewhere in the range of 600,000 to 700,000 words, but this is subject to change (and likely will due to my propensity for rambling text. oops.).

I’ve written  short and long-form original fiction as well as a lot of fanfic (say hello @ pentaghastly on AO3, and @kendallroynsfw on tumblr!), but this is my first IF! Bugs and coding issues may appear in the demo; please let me know if any issues arise during your playthroughs.

Folksaga is a work in progress. I would love constructive feedback when the demo is posted, as well as any bugs or grammar issues to be brought to my attention if I've missed them :) I would also love patience, because I'm a full time health care worker who gets sleepy lots xoxo

All That Consumes Us review

4.5/5 stars Recommended if you like: ghosts, dark academia, light horror, college settings, mystery, LGBTQ+ characters Big thanks to Netgalley, HarperTeen, and the author for an ARC in exchange for an honest review! This book actually surprised me with the opening, which was different than what I'd expected. That being said, a lot of the other plot points in the book were very predictable and it wasn't hard to figure out what was going to happen/going on as soon as the first threads were laid. I was actually kind of surprised Tara didn't put it together immediately. That being said, Waters does a good job with atmospheric writing and that really came through here. Before we're even inducted into Magni Viri, the world of Corbin College is set with fog and prestige and tradition. Magni Viri adds an additional layer to this, and the Victorian mansion is both elegant and creepy. The natural surroundings come into play somewhat too, with cicadas, bats, forest, and fog all playing at least somewhat of a role in creating the mood and setting. I'm personally a fan of eco-horror and Southern Gothic, so I would've liked a bit more of nature/setting as a character, but the genre of this book is dark academia, so what's here fits the bill. Magni Viri is, as mentioned, steeped in secrecy and tradition. Only people who have been inducted have set foot inside the dormitory and there are whispers around Corbin College that students in Magni Viri perform dark rituals. There's a good balance in Magni Viri of the academically/artistically intense and the supernaturally strange. The students are talented and are dedicated to their fields of study, sometimes to an unhealthy level, which contributes to the vibes of the story. Our main character Tara has the fortune of being inducted into Magni Viri with a concentration in writing. Her dream is to become a writer and so being able to join should be everything she wants, but imposter syndrome and strange goings-on plague her as the semester progresses. It kind of bothered me how insecure Tara was. She applied to a prestigious academic group and wanted it with everything she had....but then she constantly doubts her own worth and questions her place. Like, you either think you're good enough for prestige or you don't, you can't waffle in the middle. Luckily, this is also kind of the advice Tara gets from other people, though she isn't too good at following (or trying to follow) it. Tara seems at least a little more confident by the end of the book, which is good, but it would've been nice to see it a bit earlier. There's a bit of an ensemble cast, but the main people are Penny, Tara's kind-of girlfriend, and Wren, Tara's roommate. Jordan, Neil, and Azar are other members of the freshman Magni Viri class, and senior Quigg comes up a few times we well. Most everyone is immediately inviting to Tara, though Neil is a bit standoffish at first. Wren is a music major in Magni Viri and is a good roommate/friend, but clearly has something else going on. Wren is one of the catalysts for things getting started plot-wise. Penny is in Magni Viri studying bats and she and Tara are almost immediately close. Penny helps Tara to understand that she isn't the only one in their prestigious program to have a disadvantaged background and she acts as somewhat of a stabilizing influence on Tara while also helping to increase her self-confidence. I will say, as annoying as it was, Tara was justified in being angry at people for hiding things from her. Obviously it was a bad situation all around, but I still kind of think they should've tried harder to tell her what was going on. One of the downsides of this book is that all the characters are just sort of there. They each have their own personalities and quirks and what not, but I didn't really feel like we got much past the surface level for any of them. Having read the entire book, I don't really have a ton to say about anyone, which is kind of disappointing for a book with an ensemble cast who all end up caught up in the plot.

Neil Magny stops Mike Malott in the 3rd round after losing the first 2.5 rounds!

A new type of heartbreak for the Canadian fans tonight as their guy was cruising to a win for the first 13 minutes of this fight.

Malott came out early and was showcasing the kicking game. Straight kicks to the knee and body along with round kicks to the calf, thigh and sternum seemed to make Magny really hesitant to try to close range. In fact, Malott seemed to be doing some real damage. The last strike of the 1st was a leg kick to the thigh that really hurt Magny. Magny tried to pick the aggression up in round 2 but we got to see a little bit more of Malott's boxing. When Magny threw caution to the win to flurry, he managed to push Malott back but Malott kind of bounced off the cage and fell into a body lock takedown. Magny got up but was instantly taken down again when he tried to press a clinch takedown of his own and mounted. Malott did some damage (landing a lot of back of the head strikes too) before the round closed out.

It looked like the third was going to be another Malott round as he managed to get Magny down and was working to pass. Magny eventually managed to get up and push Malott into a double leg takedown of his own. Malott chose to try to defend with the guillotine and ended up on bottom after a small slam. Malott then tried to capture a leg as Magny postured up to throw GnP. A terrible idea 3 rounds into a fight you are winning as it just allowed for Magny to get off unanswerable GnP before stepping out to side control and then moving to mount. From there Magny rained down punches for like 30 seconds as Malott floundered about. Then the ref stopped it.

Gut wrenching loss for Malott who has to feel like he handed the fight away with some bad decision making late. He was beating Magny using the two things (leg kicks and top control grappling) that have historically been how he loses fights and then poof - he loses.

Como Mörkbrytare, sim o nome é estranho, como todo nome de livro de fantasia, eu pensei no Ezra Miller. Apesar das últimas polêmicas em relação a ele e o filme do Flash que foi levemente assustador e engraçado por causa dos memes ao redor, acho ele perfeito.

Como a Astrid, não pude deixar de pensar na Charlize Theron. Ela, como outros atores, inspira essa personagem em questão e eu não pude deixar de colocar ela aqui. E depois do papel dela em Mad Max e Atômica, impossível não pensar nela como a Astrid.

Como Eirwen, imaginei a Cate Blanchett, ainda mais depois do papel dela como Galadriel em Senhor dos Anéis. Além de que ela é uma atriz praticamente perfeita pra esse papel em tds os quesitos que eu imagino.

Esse personagem em si, ainda não tem nome. Ele não foi nomeado durante a história, e é claro que em algum momento ele vai ser nomeado, porém eu não sei que nome dar a ele ainda, então, paciência. Mas depois que eu vi o Richard Madden como o príncipe da Cinderela, eu não pude pensar em alguém melhor.

Não achei alguém tão perfeito, então, acabei, no final, por escolher o Fionn Whitehead como Magni, já que ele tem uma carinha de um jovem que se acha demais. Não que ele seja, mas se quiserem pensar em alguém melhor, só me falar, eu aceito.

Talvez...? Bill Skarsgård como Modi. Só pelo fato de ser meio tímido e ele ser tão presunçoso quanto o Magni, mas ele não demonstra, ele tem um sentido mais humilde que o Magni.

Como Frigg, a famosa esposa de Odin, eu pensei na Helen, ainda mais depois de ver ela jovem, eu achei perfeita. Até porque, por Frigg ser uma deusa de grande renome e conhecimento, só de olhar a Helen, fiquei caidinha.

Quando eu vi o Alexander Skarsgård como "Northman", eu sabia que ele seria perfeito como Týr, o deus da guerra na mitologia nórdica. Tanto pela estatura como pela presença física.

Como Baldr, pensei que poderia ser o Armie Hammer. Ele tem aparência distinta e uma capacidade de transmitir uma presença luminosa e calorosa, como o próprio deus Baldr, por isso achei perfeito.

Como o Sven, pensei no Jacob Tremblay. Apesar de que, em aparência, ele não seja tão parecido com o Sven, como eu descrevi, a sua expressão facial é adequada para transmitir a curiosidade, confiança e humildade do personagem Sven.

Como Theo, o irmão da personagem principal, eu pensei no Tom Hardy. Principalmente por causa dessa primeira foto (no qual eu esqueci o nome do filme) dele lutador, o que faz sentido, pq o personagem em si é lutador de boxe e tb o Hardy possui a presença e a intensidade necessárias pra retratar o Theo como um personagem agressivo e protetor.

Agora o Emrys... eu, basicamente, me inspirei no Astarion do Neil Newbon pra fazer o meu personagem. Então, acho q já sabem mais ou menos como ele, a diferença é a história dele q muda, claramente e algumas outras coisas.

Basicamente é isso... são todos os personagens que eu escrevi até agora estão aqui. Quando tiver mais, eu adiciono, oq provavelmente vai ter, é inevitável, assim como o Thanos.

Soso se despedindo aqui e até a próxima postagem, que talvez seja o prefácio, ai vem os capítulos e tudo mais.

Ah, quase esqueci... n decidi ainda se vai ser no começo ou no final, mas td capítulo vai ter um pequeno dicionário, já que algumas palavras da história são em uma língua morta, então, é só pra ajudar vocês.
